RESUMEN

In this study, non-thermal plasma (NTP) was employed to modify the Cu/TiO2 adsorbent to efficiently purify H2S in low-temperature and micro-oxygen environments. The effects of Cu loading amounts and atmospheres of NTP treatment on the adsorption-oxidation performance of the adsorbents were investigated. The NTP modification successfully boosted the H2S removal capacity to varying degrees, and the optimized adsorbent treated by air plasma (Cu/TiO2-Air) attained the best H2S breakthrough capacity of 113.29 mg H2S/gadsorbent, which was almost 5 times higher than that of the adsorbent without NTP modification. Further studies demonstrated that the superior performance of Cu/TiO2-Air was attributed to increased mesoporous volume, more exposure of active sites (CuO) and functional groups (amino groups and hydroxyl groups), enhanced Ti-O-Cu interaction, and the favorable ratio of active oxygen species. Additionally, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated the main reason for the deactivation was the consumption of the active components (CuO) and the agglomeration of reaction products (CuS and SO42-) occupying the active sites on the surface and the inner pores of the adsorbents.

RESUMEN

In this work, a carbon felt (CF) was utilized to fabricate electrochemical sensors for the simultaneous detection of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+. The working conditions of CF sensors including thermal activation, electrolytes, and enrichment potentials and times were systematically investigated. Under the optimal detection conditions, the resulting sensors showed good linearity in the concentration ranges of 3-10,000, 2-10,000 and 5-10,000 µg/L for the detection of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+, corresponding to the detection limits of 1, 0.5, and 1 µg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the resulting electrochemical sensor demonstrates excellent reproducibility and anti-interference. In addition, the CF electrodes maintain good stability even after 180 days of storage at room temperature. In real water, rice and milk samples, the CF electrodes have been successfully utilized for the detection of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ and the results were in agreement with those obtained from the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

RESUMEN

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted significant attention due to their compositional and structural flexibility. However, it is challenging but meaningful to design and fabricate hierarchical mixed-dimensional LDHs with synergistic effects to increase the electrical conductivity of LDHs and promote the intrinsic activity. Herein, 3D hollow NiCo-LDH nanocages decorated porous biochar (3D NiCo-LDH/PBC) has been synthesized by using ZIF-67 as precursor, which was utilized for constructing electrochemical sensing platform to realize simultaneous determination of Cu2+ and Hg2+. The 3D NiCo-LDH/PBC possessed the characteristics of hollow material and three-dimensional porous material, revealing a larger surface area, more exposed active sites, and faster electron transfer, which is beneficial to enhancing its electrochemical performance. Consequently, the developed sensor displayed good performance for simultaneously detecting Cu2+ and Hg2+ with ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03 µg L-1 and 0.03 µg L-1, respectively. The proposed sensor also demonstrated excellent stability, repeatability and reproducibility. Furthermore, the sensor can be successfully used for the electrochemical analysis of Cu2+ and Hg2+ in lake water sample with satisfactory recovery, which is of great feasibility for practical application.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has demonstrated good outcomes at short-term follow-up, with significant improvements in pain, hip function, and patient-reported outcomes, coupled with a complication rate similar to that of unilateral surgery. PURPOSE: To investigate whether, in patients with bilateral symptomatic FAI, simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery is an efficacious option that produces effective midterm outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A prospective database of patients who underwent primary hip arthroscopic surgery between August 2012 and October 2020 was used to collect clinical data on 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of FAI. Group 2 represented a matched-pair control group of patients selected based on sex and age with signs and symptoms of unilateral FAI and in whom a single side was evaluated and treated. Differences in the International Hip Outcome Tool-12 and Non-Arthritic Hip Score scores were evaluated up to 5 years postoperatively. RESULTS: In total, 171 patients (235 hips) were included, of whom 64 underwent simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery (128 hips) and a control group of 107 patients (107 hips) underwent unilateral hip arthroscopic surgery. No significant differences were observed in International Hip Outcome Tool-12 scores between the 2 groups at 6 weeks, 3 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 5 years postoperatively. No significant differences were observed in Non-Arthritic Hip Score scores between the simultaneous bilateral and control groups at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 5 years postoperatively. Overall, 18% of hips in the simultaneous bilateral group reported lateral femoral cutaneous nerve palsy at 2-week follow-up in comparison to 16% of hips in the control group. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of FAI represents a safe treatment option, producing effective midterm outcomes in appropriately selected patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The burden of osteoarthritis (OA) in multiple joints is high and for patients with bilateral OA of the hip there is no clear recommendation about the indication for simultaneous (one-stage) bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) versus two-staged procedures. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare revision and mortality rates after different strategies of surgical timing in bilateral hip OA from the German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD). METHODS: Since 2012 22,500 patients with bilateral THA (including 767 patients with one-staged bilateral surgery and 11,796 patients with another separate procedures within one year after first THA) are documented in the registry. The patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral THA were matched with a cohort of 767 patients who underwent the second THA between 1 and 90 days postoperatively (short interval) and another cohort of 4,602 patients with THA between 91 and 365 days postoperatively (intermediate interval). Revision for all reasons and mortality rates were recorded. Cox regression was performed to evaluate the influence of different patient characteristics. RESULTS: The cumulative 5-year revision rate for patients with simultaneous bilateral THA was 1.8% (95% CI 0.9-2.6), for patients with two-staged THA 2.3% (95% CI 1.0-3.6) in the short interval and 2.5% (95% CI 2.1-2.9) in the intermediate interval, respectively. In all three groups, patients who underwent THA in a high-volume center (≥ 500 THA per year) had a significant lower risk for revision (HR 0.687; 95% CI 0.501-0.942) compared to surgeries in a low-volume center (< 250 THA per year). There was no significant difference regarding cumulative mortality rates in the three cohorts. Higher age (HR 1.060; 95% CI 1.042-1.078) and severe comorbidities as reflected in the Elixhauser Score (HR 1.046; 95% CI 1.014-1.079) were associated with higher mortality rates after simultaneous THA. CONCLUSION: Simultaneous bilateral THA seems to be a safe procedure for younger patients with limited comorbidities who have bilateral end-stage hip OA, especially if performed in high-volume centers. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

RESUMEN

Multivalvular heart disease (MVHD) is present in one-third of patients with valvular heart disease (VHD). Compared to single VHD patients, these patients have a more significant hemodynamic impact and are often left under medical treatment. Most importantly, when undergoing multiple valve interventions, they show worse rates of heart failure and mortality. The guidelines-supported interventions in patients with MVHD in combined aortic regurgitation and mitral stenosis include percutaneous mitral balloon commissurotomy, open mitral commissurotomy, or surgical mitral valve replacement followed by transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement, trying to minimize the increased mortality risk of double-valve replacement. Simultaneous transcatheter valve replacement (STVR) for native MVHD is still off-label and not yet considered in clinical guidelines since the evidence of its results is limited to a few cases reported worldwide. However, fully percutaneous transfemoral STVR seems promising for MVHD patients thanks to its minimal invasiveness, the continuous improvement of the transcatheter heart valve devices, the likely shorter length of stay and the fastest recovery. To our knowledge, this is the first case ever reported of fully percutaneous STVR for native MVHD in aortic regurgitation and mitral stenosis. Deep understanding of both pathologies and their interactions, not only from a pathological point of view but from the procedural planning and procedural steps point of view is mandatory. Hereby we present the specific STVR procedural planning considerations, a step-by-step guide on how to perform an aortic and mitral STVR and its critical considerations, as well as the procedural and follow-up results.

RESUMEN

A 55-year-old Japanese woman with a history of hypertension and right putaminal hemorrhage developed simultaneous hemorrhages in the left thalamus and putamen and died 24 h later. There were no vascular anomalies in the brain. Synaptophysin immunostaining combined with eosin azure 50 (EA50) staining clearly identified the hematoma and the surrounding brain structures. In the right cerebral hemisphere, a cystic lesion as a sequela of the usual type of hypertensive putaminal hematoma was evident. In the left cerebral hemisphere, two fresh hematomas were evident. One was a thalamic hematoma, which had destroyed the dorsal and medial structures of the thalamus, and the other was an unusual putaminal hematoma, which had destroyed the entire putamen and crossed the internal capsule and caudate nucleus. α-Smooth muscle actin immunostaining combined with EA50 and Victoria bleu staining demonstrated three ruptured arteries associated with fibrin aggregates in the anterior thalamic nucleus and anterior putamen. Some circular structures composed of fibrin, suggesting the presence of ruptured arteries in the neighborhood, were evident in the thalamus and putamen. In the putamen, ruptured arteries and circular structures were present in the lateral to medial areas. Fibrin aggregates in the anterior thalamic nucleus were more numerous than those in the putamen. On the basis of these findings, we concluded that: (i) the artery with numerous fibrin aggregates in the anterior thalamic nucleus had ruptured first, followed by the arteries distributed in other parts of the thalamus and putamen; (ii) the unusual putaminal hematoma was attributable to rupture of the arteries around the center of the putamen, which are not responsible for the usual type of hypertensive putaminal hematoma; and (iii) it is suggested that even if hypertensive hemorrhage occurs simultaneously in the ipsilateral putamen and thalamus, the usual type of hypertensive mixed-type hematoma does not form.

RESUMEN

Fungi capable of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater is rarely found. Here, a novel fungal strain (SNDM1) performing heterotrophic nitrification, aerobic denitrification, and phosphate removal was isolated and identified as Mucor circinelloides. The favorable nutrient removal conditions by the strain using glucose were C/N ratios of 25-30, salinities of 0 %-3 %, and pH of 7.5. Strain SNDM1 achieved ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate removal rates of 5.23, 10.08, 4.88, and 0.97 mg/L/h. Nitrogen balance indicated that gaseous (18.60 %-24.55 %) and intracellular nitrogen (43.76 %-70.63 %) were primary fate of initial nitrogen. Enzyme activity revealed that ammonium removal occurred through heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification. Removed phosphorus was mainly transformed into cell membranes (56 %-64 %) and extracellular polymeric substances (20 %-26 %). Orthophosphate was the major intracellular phosphorus species, while polyphosphate and pyrophosphate existed extracellularly. These findings highlight the potential of this fungal strain for bioremediating polluted wastewater.

RESUMEN

As steel production increases, large volumes of highly toxic and nitrogen-rich coking wastewater (CWW) are produced, prompting the development of a novel oxic-hydrolytic-oxic (OHO) biological treatment combination designed for highly efficient removal of nitrogen-contained contaminants. However, previous studies have not comprehensively explored the CWW biotreatment from the perspective of nitrogen metabolism functional genes and pathways. Based on the investigation of taking the full-scale OHO biotreatment combination as a case, it was found that the O1 and O2 bioreactors remove nitrogen through the ammonia assimilation accounting for 33.87% of the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate, while the H bioreactor removes nitrogen through the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification accounting for 61.11% of the TN removal rate. The major ammonia assimilation taxa include Thauera, Immundisolibacter and Thiobacillus; the major nitrifying taxa include Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas; and the major denitrifying taxa include Thiobacillus, Lautropia and Mesorhizobium. Additionally, the H bioreactor exhibits the potential to be optimized for simultaneous nitrification-denitrification coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox). These understandings will guide the optimization of engineering design and operational practices, contributing to more effective and sustainable wastewater treatment strategies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The posterior maxilla presents challenges for implant insertion because of the poor bone quality as well as the loss of vertical bone height. Indirect transcrestal sinus lift techniques are advised when a few millimeters of additional height are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of antral membrane balloon technique versus Densah burs for transcrestal maxillary sinus lifting with simultaneous implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 22 patients received 32 dental implants for replacement of missed maxillary posterior teeth after crestal maxillary sinus lifting. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1, patients underwent crestal sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement using antral membrane balloon technique. Group 2, patients underwent crestal sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement using Densah burs. Patients were evaluated clinically and radiographically using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) at regular time intervals immediately, 6 months and 12 months after surgery. All clinical and radiographic parameters were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: All dental implants were successful for 12 months of follow up. Regarding implant primary stability, there was a statistical significant difference between the study groups in favor of Densah group (P = 0.004), while there was no significant difference after 6 months (P = 0.07). Radiographically, balloon group showed a statistically significant immediate postoperative vertical bone height (P < 0.0001), and significant reduction in vertical bone height after 6 months (P < 0.0001). Densah group showed significant increase in bone density (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both techniques demonstrated successful clinical and radiographic outcomes for crestal sinus lift. The antral membrane balloon group demonstrated better immediate postoperative vertical bone gain, while Densah burs had higher implant primary stability and bone density. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered in Clinical-Trials.gov PRS ( https://register. CLINICALTRIALS: gov ) under identification number NCT05922592 on 28/06/2023.

RESUMEN

Reactive carbonyl species (RCS), including acrolein (ACR), methylglyoxal (MGO), and glyoxal (GO), are typically generated in food processing and accumulate in the body for ages, triggering various chronic diseases. Here, we investigated the capture capability and reaction pathways of mangiferin one-to-one and one-to-many on RCS in high temperatures using UPLC-MS/MS. We found that mangiferin can capture ACR/MGO/GO to form their adducts, yet, the ability to capture RCS is arranged in different orders, with ACR > MGO > GO for a single RCS and MGO > ACR > GO for multiple RCS. After synthesizing and identifying the structures of the ACR- and MGO-adducts of MGF, our results indicated that MGF-ACR-MGO produced in the multiple-RCS-MGF system was formed by capturing MGO through MGF-ACR rather than through MGF-MGO capturing ACR, which resulting in higher inhibitory activity of MGF against MGO than against ACR. Then, the capture ability and path of MGF on RCS were verified in the coffee-leaves tea and cake.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to summarize the existing evidence about the effectiveness of double defibrillation (DD) in comparison to standard defibrillation for patients with refractory ventricular fibrillation (RVF). DD encompasses double "sequential" external defibrillation (DSeq-D) and double "simultaneous" defibrillation (DSim-D), with the study also shedding light on the respective effects of DSeq-D and DSim-D. METHODS: Investigators systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Central databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies from their inception until June 06, 2024. The rate of survival to hospital discharge was the primary outcome, while the incidence of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of ventricular fibrillation (VF), survival to hospital admission and good neurologic outcome were secondary outcomes. Relative ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for each outcome. Heterogeneity was assessed using I square value. RESULTS: A total of 6 trials, comprising 1360 patients, were included. One was an RCT, and five were observational cohort studies. The RCT showed that, compared to standard defibrillation, DSeq-D was associated with higher incidences of survival to hospital discharge, termination of VF, ROSC and good neurologic outcome. However, the pooled results of cohort studies found no benefit of DD over standard defibrillation in survival to hospital discharge (RR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.46-1.78), nor in secondary outcomes. Furthermore, subgroup analysis suggested DSim-D was linked with lower ROSC rate compared to standard defibrillation (RR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.49-0.86), while there was no significance between DSeq-D and standard defibrillation (RR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.70-1.42). CONCLUSIONS: The benefit of DSeq-D in survival to hospital discharge for RVF patients was found in the RCT, but not in cohort studies. Additionally, DSim-D should be applied with greater caution for RVF patients. Further validation is needed through larger-scale and higher-quality trials. RESUMEN

In this study we employ computational methods to investigate the influence of aeration strategies on simultaneous nitrification-denitrification processes. Specifically, we explore the impact of periodic and intermittent aeration on denitrification rates, which typically lag behind nitrification rates under identical environmental conditions. A two-dimensional deterministic multi-scale model is employed to elucidate the fundamental processes governing the behavior of membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs). We aim to identify key factors that promote denitrification under varying aeration strategies. Our findings indicate that the concentration of oxygen during the off phase and the duration of the off interval play crucial roles in controlling denitrification. Complete discontinuation of oxygen is not advisable, as it inhibits the formation of anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria, thereby impeding denitrification. Extending the length of the off interval, however, enhances denitrification. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the initial inoculation of the substratum (membrane in this study) influences substrate degradation under periodic aeration, with implications for both nitrification and denitrification. Comparison between continuous and periodic/intermittent aeration scenarios reveals that the latter can extend the operational cycle of MABRs. This extension is attributed to relatively low biofilm growth rates associated with non-continuous aeration strategies. Consequently, our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between aeration strategies and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in MABRs. The insights presented herein can contribute significantly to the optimization of MABR performance in wastewater treatment applications.

RESUMEN

Atherosclerosis is a primary global health concern due to its high morbidity and mortality. This disease is characterized by a complex interplay of chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and proteolytic enzymes. Traditional imaging techniques struggle to capture the dynamic biochemical processes within atherosclerotic plaques. Herein, we have developed a novel unimolecular photoacoustic probe (UMAPP) that combines specific recognition sites for neutrophil elastase (NE) and the redox pair O2•‒/GSH into a cohesive molecular platform, allowing in vivo monitoring of oxidative stress and activated neutrophils within plaques. UMAPP features a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core linked to a hydrophilic NE-cleavable tetrapeptide, and dual oxidative stress-responsive catechol moieties, enabling NE-mediated modulation of photoinduced electron transfer, affecting the photoacoustic intensity at 685 nm (PA685), while oxidation and reduction of the catechol groups by O2•‒ and GSH lead to reversible, ratiometric changes in the photoacoustic spectrum. Preliminary applications of UMAPP have successfully differentiated between atherosclerotic and healthy mice, assessed the impact of pneumonia on plaque composition, and validated the probe's efficacy in drug-treatment studies, detecting molecular changes prior to observable histopathological alterations. UMAPP's integrated molecular imaging approach holds significant promise for advancing the diagnosis and management of atherosclerosis by enabling earlier and more precise detection of vulnerable plaques.

RESUMEN

Motivated by the questions of risk assessment in climatology (temperature change in North America) and medicine (impact of statin usage and coronavirus disease 2019 on hospitalized patients), we address the problem of estimating the set in the domain of a function whose image equals a predefined subset of the real line. Existing methods require strict assumptions. We generalize the estimation of such sets to dense and nondense domains with protection against inflated Type I error in exploratory data analysis. This is achieved by proving that confidence sets of multiple upper, lower, or interval sets can be simultaneously constructed with the desired confidence nonasymptotically through inverting simultaneous confidence intervals. Nonparametric bootstrap algorithm and code are provided.

RESUMEN

This study aims to quantify haloperidol and methylparaben in a liquid pharmaceutical formulation (2 mg/ml) using UV spectrometry and the simultaneous equations method. Additionally, we explored the stability of haloperidol under various stress conditions. The UV analysis revealed maximum absorption peaks at 248 nm for haloperidol and 256 nm for methylparaben, using a 1 % (v/v) lactic acid solution as the solvent. Method validation, conducted according to ICH guidelines, affirmed the method's reliability, showing excellent results in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy, and sensitivity. The method allows direct application to finished products, enabling simultaneous quantification without extractions. Its simplicity, speed, and cost-effectiveness make it ideal for routine controls in pharmaceutical industry haloperidol solution analyses. The method extends to monitoring forced degradation, indicating photolytic and hydrolytic degradation under acidic and basic conditions, while affirming thermal and oxidative stability. This proposed UV spectrometric method serves as a compelling alternative to pharmacopeia-recommended techniques, simplifying simultaneous determination of the active ingredient and preservative. This streamlines analysis, reducing time and costs. Additionally, it proves valuable in small industries lacking sophisticated instrumentation, offering insights into active ingredient behavior during forced degradation.

RESUMEN

A dual-template molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was developed for the simultaneous detection of serotonin (5-HT) and glutamate (Glu). First, amino-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (NRGO) was used as the modification material of a GCE to increase its electrical conductivity and specific surface area, using Glu and 5-HT as dual-template molecules and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) with self-polymerization ability as functional monomers. Through self-assembly and electropolymerization, dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers were formed on the electrode. After removing the templates, the specific recognition binding sites were exposed. The amount of NRGO, polymerization parameters, and elution parameters were further optimized to construct a dual-template molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor, which can specifically recognize double-target molecules Glu and 5-HT. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique was used to achieve simultaneous detection of Glu and 5-HT based on their distinct electrochemical activities under specific conditions. The sensor showed a good linear relationship for Glu and 5-HT in the range 1 ~ 100 µM, and the detection limits were 0.067 µM and 0.047 µM (S/N = 3), respectively. The sensor has good reproducibility, repeatability, and selectivity. It was successfully utilized to simultaneously detect Glu and 5-HT in mouse serum, offering a more dependable foundation for objectively diagnosing and early warning of depression. Additionally, the double signal sensing strategy also provides a new approach for the simultaneous detection of both electroactive and non-electroactive substances.

RESUMEN

Membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is challenged by biofilm thickness control and phosphorus removal. Air scouring aided by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to detach outer biofilm in sequencing batch MABR treating low C/N wastewater. Biofilm with 177-285 µm thickness in cycle 5-15 achieved over 85 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removals at loading rate of 13.2 gCOD/m2/d and 2.64 gNH4+-N/m2/d. Biofilm rheology measurements in cycle 10-25 showed yield stress against detachment of 2.8-7.4 Pa, which were equal to CFD calculated shear stresses under air scouring flowrate of 3-9 L/min. Air scouring reduced effluent NH4+-N by 10 % and biofilm thickness by 78 µm. Intermittent aeration (4h off, 19.5h on) and air scouring (3 L/min, 30 s before settling) in one cycle achieved COD removal over 90 %, TIN and PO43--P removals over 80 %, showing great potential for simultaneous carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removals.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and early-stage lung cancer can both be treated under thoracoscopy. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and safety of simultaneous thoracoscopic surgery for atrial fibrillation and early-stage lung cancer. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective study of 865 patients with paroxysmal or non-paroxysmal AF who underwent surgical ablation between October 2014 and December 2021. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they have undergone simultaneous thoracoscopic early-stage lung cancer surgery and resulting in 24 pairs of patients. RESULTS: In total, 48 patients (24 matched pairs) were analyzed. The age was 63.71 ± 8.43 years. Procedure time and postoperative mechanical ventilation time were significantly lower in the group AF than group AFLC (Atrial fibrillation and lung cancer) (140.38 ± 27.53 vs. 230.79 ± 59.06 min, P<0.001; 5 vs 6.5 h, P = 0.002). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of operative bleeding volume (90.00 ± 29.78 vs 85.83 ± 53.56 ml, P = 0.741), total postoperative drainage volume (1020.83 ± 516.5 vs 1406.25 ± 840.33 ml, P = 0.067), ICU (intensive care unit) length of stay (LOS) (43.5 vs 44 h, P = 0.33), hospitalization LOS (9.29 ± 1.92 vs 8.58 ± 1.98 days, P = 0.214) and incidence of freedom from AF or complications. CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous thoracoscopic surgical AF ablation and early-stage lung cancer is safe and feasible. It can be used as an alternative method for coexisting atrial fibrillation and lung cancer with acceptable operative risks.
