Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have increasingly become integral to multi-access edge computing (MEC) due to their flexibility and cost-effectiveness, especially in the B5G and 6G eras. This paper aims to enhance the quality of experience (QoE) in large-scale UAV-MEC networks by minimizing the shrinkage ratio through optimal decision-making in computation mode selection for each user device (UD), UAV flight trajectory, bandwidth allocation, and computing resource allocation at edge servers. However, the interdependencies among UAV trajectory, binary task offloading mode, and computing/network resource allocation across numerous IoT nodes pose significant challenges. To address these challenges, we formulate the shrinkage ratio minimization problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem and propose a two-tier optimization strategy. To reduce the scale of the optimization problem, we first design a low-complexity UAV partition coverage algorithm based on the Welzl method and determine the UAV flight trajectory by solving a traveling salesman problem (TSP). Subsequently, we develop a coordinate descent (CD)-based method and an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based method for network bandwidth and computing resource allocation in the MEC system. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the CD-based method is simple to implement and highly efficient in large-scale UAV-MEC networks, reducing the time complexity by three orders of magnitude compared to convex optimization methods. Meanwhile, the ADMM-based joint optimization method achieves approximately an 8% reduction in shrinkage ratio optimization compared to baseline methods.

The recent advancements of mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have provided resilient and flexible computation services for ground users beyond the coverage of terrestrial service. In this paper, we focus on a UAV-assisted MEC system in which the UAV equipped with MEC servers is used to assist user devices in computing their tasks. To minimize the weighted average energy consumption and delay in the UAV-assisted MEC system, a LQR-Lagrange-based DDPG (LLDDPG) algorithm, which jointly optimizes the user task offloading and the UAV trajectory design, is proposed. To be specific, the LLDDPG algorithm consists of three subproblems. The DDPG algorithm is used to address the issue of UAV desired trajectory planning, and subsequently, the LQR-based algorithm is employed to achieve the real-time tracking control of UAV desired trajectory. Finally, the Lagrange duality method is proposed to solve the optimization problem of computational resource allocation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed LLDDPG algorithm can effectively improve the system resource management and realize the real-time UAV trajectory design.

With the progression of smart vehicles, i.e., connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), and wireless technologies, there has been an increased need for substantial computational operations for tasks such as path planning, scene recognition, and vision-based object detection. Managing these intensive computational applications is concerned with significant energy consumption. Hence, for this article, a low-cost and sustainable solution using computational offloading and efficient resource allocation at edge devices within the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) framework has been utilised. To address the quality of service (QoS) among vehicles, a trade-off between energy consumption and computational time has been taken into consideration while deciding on the offloading process and resource allocation. The offloading process has been assigned at a minimum wireless resource block level to adapt to the beyond 5G (B5G) network. The novel approach of joint optimisation of computational resources and task offloading decisions uses the meta-heuristic particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm and decision analysis (DA) to find the near-optimal solution. Subsequently, a comparison is made with other proposed algorithms, namely CTORA, CODO, and Heuristics, in terms of computational efficiency and latency. The performance analysis reveals that the numerical results outperform existing algorithms, demonstrating an 8% and a 5% increase in energy efficiency.

With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, Terminal Devices (TDs) are more inclined to offload computing tasks to higher-performance computing servers, thereby solving the problems of insufficient computing capacity and rapid battery consumption of TD. The emergence of Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technology provides new opportunities for IoT task offloading. It allows TDs to access computing networks through multiple communication technologies and supports more mobility of terminal devices. Review studies on IoT task offloading and MEC have been extensive, but none of them focus on IoT task offloading in MEC. To fill this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the algorithms and mechanisms of multiple IoT task offloading in the MEC network. For each paper, the main problems solved by the mechanism, technical classification, evaluation methods, and supported parameters are extracted and analyzed. Furthermore, shortcomings of current research and future research trends are discussed. This review will help potential and new researchers quickly understand the panorama of IoT task offloading approaches in MEC and find appropriate research paths.

Delay-sensitive task offloading in a device-to-device assisted mobile edge computing (D2D-MEC) system with energy harvesting devices is a critical challenge due to the dynamic load level at edge nodes and the variability in harvested energy. In this paper, we propose a joint dynamic task offloading and CPU frequency control scheme for delay-sensitive tasks in a D2D-MEC system, taking into account the intricacies of multi-slot tasks, characterized by diverse processing speeds and data transmission rates. Our methodology involves meticulous modeling of task arrival and service processes using queuing systems, coupled with the strategic utilization of D2D communication to alleviate edge server load and prevent network congestion effectively. Central to our solution is the formulation of average task delay optimization as a challenging nonlinear integer programming problem, requiring intelligent decision making regarding task offloading for each generated task at active mobile devices and CPU frequency adjustments at discrete time slots. To navigate the intricate landscape of the extensive discrete action space, we design an efficient multi-agent DRL learning algorithm named MAOC, which is based on MAPPO, to minimize the average task delay by dynamically determining task-offloading decisions and CPU frequencies. MAOC operates within a centralized training with decentralized execution (CTDE) framework, empowering individual mobile devices to make decisions autonomously based on their unique system states. Experimental results demonstrate its swift convergence and operational efficiency, and it outperforms other baseline algorithms.

IoT-based smart transportation monitors vehicles, cargo, and driver statuses for safe movement. Due to the limited computational capabilities of the sensors, the IoT devices require powerful remote servers to execute their tasks, and this phenomenon is called task offloading. Researchers have developed efficient task offloading and scheduling mechanisms for IoT devices to reduce energy consumption and response time. However, most research has not considered fault-tolerance-based job allocation for IoT logistics trucks, task and data-aware scheduling, priority-based task offloading, or multiple-parameter-based fog node selection. To overcome the limitations, we proposed a Multi-Objective Task-Aware Offloading and Scheduling Framework for IoT Logistics (MT-OSF). The proposed model prioritizes the tasks into delay-sensitive and computation-intensive tasks using a priority-based offloader and forwards the two lists to the Task-Aware Scheduler (TAS) for further processing on fog and cloud nodes. The Task-Aware Scheduler (TAS) uses a multi-criterion decision-making process, i.e., the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), to calculate the fog nodes' priority for task allocation and scheduling. The AHP decides the fog nodes' priority based on node energy, bandwidth, RAM, and MIPS power. Similarly, the TAS also calculates the shortest distance between the IoT-enabled vehicle and the fog node to which the IoT tasks are assigned for execution. A task-aware scheduler schedules delay-sensitive tasks on nearby fog nodes while allocating computation-intensive tasks to cloud data centers using the FCFS algorithm. Fault-tolerant manager is used to check task failure; if any task fails, the proposed system re-executes the tasks, and if any fog node fails, the proposed system allocates the tasks to another fog node to reduce the task failure ratio. The proposed model is simulated in iFogSim2 and demonstrates a 7% reduction in response time, 16% reduction in energy consumption, and 22% reduction in task failure ratio in comparison to Ant Colony Optimization and Round Robin.

Recently, the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with edge computing has emerged as a promising paradigm for providing computational support for Internet of Things (IoT) applications in remote, disaster-stricken, and maritime areas. In UAV-aided edge computing, the offloading decision plays a central role in optimizing the overall system performance. However, the trajectory directly affects the offloading decision. In general, IoT devices use ground offload computation-intensive tasks on UAV-aided edge servers. The UAVs plan their trajectories based on the task generation rate. Therefore, researchers are attempting to optimize the offloading decision along with the trajectory, and numerous studies are ongoing to determine the impact of the trajectory on offloading decisions. In this survey, we review existing trajectory-aware offloading decision techniques by focusing on design concepts, operational features, and outstanding characteristics. Moreover, they are compared in terms of design principles and operational characteristics. Open issues and research challenges are discussed, along with future directions.

With the exponential growth of wireless devices and the demand for real-time processing, traditional server architectures face challenges in meeting the ever-increasing computational requirements. This paper proposes a collaborative edge computing framework to offload and process tasks efficiently in such environments. By equipping a moving unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as the mobile edge computing (MEC) server, the proposed architecture aims to release the burden on roadside units (RSUs) servers. Specifically, we propose a two-layer edge intelligence scheme to allocate network computing resources. The first layer intelligently offloads and allocates tasks generated by wireless devices in the vehicular system, and the second layer utilizes the partially observable stochastic game (POSG), solved by duelling deep Q-learning, to allocate the computing resources of each processing node (PN) to different tasks. Meanwhile, we propose a weighted position optimization algorithm for the UAV movement in the system to facilitate task offloading and task processing. Simulation results demonstrate the improved performance by applying the proposed scheme.

Compared to cloud computing, mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising solution for delay-sensitive applications due to its proximity to end users. Because of its ability to offload resource-intensive tasks to nearby edge servers, MEC allows a diverse range of compute- and storage-intensive applications to operate on resource-constrained devices. The optimal utilization of MEC can lead to enhanced responsiveness and quality of service, but it requires careful design from the perspective of user-base station association, virtualized resource provisioning, and task distribution. Also, considering the limited exploration of the federation concept in the existing literature, its impacts on the allocation and management of resources still remain not widely recognized. In this paper, we study the network and MEC resource scheduling problem, where some edge servers are federated, limiting resource expansion within the same federations. The integration of network and MEC is crucial, emphasizing the necessity of a joint approach. In this work, we present NAFEOS, a proposed solution formulated as a two-stage algorithm that can effectively integrate association optimization with vertical and horizontal scaling. The Stage-1 problem optimizes the user-base station association and federation assignment so that the edge servers can be utilized in a balanced manner. The following Stage-2 dynamically schedules both vertical and horizontal scaling so that the fluctuating task-offloading demands from users are fulfilled. The extensive evaluations and comparison results show that the proposed approach can effectively achieve optimal resource utilization.

Real-time computation tasks in vehicular edge computing (VEC) provide convenience for vehicle users. However, the efficiency of task offloading seriously affects the quality of service (QoS). The predictive-mode task offloading is limited by computation resources, storage resources and the timeliness of vehicle trajectory data. Meanwhile, machine learning is difficult to deploy on edge servers. In this paper, we propose a vehicle trajectory prediction method based on the vehicle frequent pattern for task offloading in VEC. First, in the initialization stage, a T-pattern prediction tree (TPPT) is constructed based on the historical vehicle trajectory data. Secondly, when predicting the vehicle trajectory, the vehicle frequent itemset with the largest vehicle trajectory support is found in the vehicle frequent itemset of the TPPT. Finally, in the update stage, the TPPT is updated in real time with the predicted vehicle trajectory results. Meanwhile, based on the proposed prediction method, the strategies of task offloading and optimization algorithm are designed to minimize energy consumption with time constraints. The experiments are carried out on real-vehicle datasets and the Capital Bikeshare datasets. The results show that compared with the baseline T-pattern method, the accuracy of the prediction method is improved by more than 10% and the prediction efficiency is improved by more than 6.5 times. The vehicle trajectory prediction method based on the vehicle frequent pattern has high accuracy and prediction efficiency, which can solve the problem of vehicle trajectory prediction for task offloading.

The IoT has connected a vast number of devices on a massive internet scale. With the rapid increase in devices and data, offloading tasks from IoT devices to remote Cloud data centers becomes unproductive and costly. Optimizing energy consumption in IoT devices while meeting deadlines and data constraints is challenging. Fog Computing aids efficient IoT task processing with proximity to nodes and lower service delay. Cloud task offloading occurs frequently due to Fog Computing's limited resources compared to remote Cloud, necessitating improved techniques for accurate categorization and distribution of IoT device task offloading in a hybrid IoT, Fog, and Cloud paradigm. This article explores relevant offloading strategies in Fog Computing and proposes MCEETO, an intelligent energy-aware allocation strategy, utilizing a multi-classifier-based algorithm for efficient task offloading by selecting optimal Fog Devices (FDs) for module placement. MCEETO decision parameters include task attributes, Fog node characteristics, network latency, and bandwidth. The method is evaluated using the iFogSim simulator and compared with edge-ward and Cloud-only strategies. The proposed solution is more energy-efficient, saving around 11.36% compared to Cloud-only and approximately 9.30% compared to the edge-ward strategy. Additionally, the MCEETO algorithm achieved a 67% and 96% reduction in network usage compared to both strategies.

As an emerging network paradigm, the space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) has garnered attention from academia and industry. That is because SAGIN can implement seamless global coverage and connections among electronic devices in space, air, and ground spaces. Additionally, the shortage of computing and storage resources in mobile devices greatly impacts the quality of experiences for intelligent applications. Hence, we plan to integrate SAGIN as an abundant resource pool into mobile edge computing environments (MECs). To facilitate efficient processing, we need to solve the optimal task offloading decisions. In contrast to existing MEC task offloading solutions, we have to face some new challenges, such as the fluctuation of processing capabilities for edge computing nodes, the uncertainty of transmission latency caused by heterogeneous network protocols, the uncertain amount of uploaded tasks during a period, and so on. In this paper, we first describe the task offloading decision problem in environments characterized by these new challenges. However, we cannot use standard robust optimization and stochastic optimization methods to obtain optimal results under uncertain network environments. In this paper, we propose the 'condition value at risk-aware distributionally robust optimization' algorithm for task offloading, denoted as RADROO, to solve the task offloading decision problem. RADROO combines the distributionally robust optimization and the condition value at risk model to achieve optimal results. We evaluated our approach in simulated SAGIN environments, considering confidence intervals, the number of mobile task offloading instances, and various parameters. We compare our proposed RADROO algorithm with state-of-the-art algorithms, such as the standard robust optimization algorithm, the stochastic optimization algorithm, the DRO algorithm, and the Brute algorithm. The experimental results show that RADROO can achieve a sub-optimal mobile task offloading decision. Overall, RADROO is more robust than others to the new challenges mentioned above in SAGIN.

As a new type of computing paradigm closer to service terminals, mobile edge computing (MEC), can meet the requirements of computing-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. In addition, it can also reduce the burden on mobile terminals by offloading computing. Due to cost issues, results in the deployment density of mobile edge servers (MES) is restricted in real scenario, whereas the suitable MES should be chosen for better performance. Therefore, this article proposes a task offloading strategy under the sparse MES density deployment scenario. Commonly, mobile terminals may reach MES through varied access points (AP) based on multi-hop transmitting mode. The transmission delay and processing delay caused by the selection of AP and MES will affect the performance of MEC. For the purpose of reducing the transmission delay due to system load balancing and superfluous multi-hop, we formulated the multi-objective optimization problem. The optimization goals are the workload balancing of edge servers and the completion delay of all task offloading. We express the formulated system as an undirected and unweighted graph, and we propose a hybrid genetic particle swarm algorithm based on two-dimensional genes (GA-PSO). Simulation results show that the hybrid GA-PSO algorithm does not outperform state-of-the-art GA and NSA algorithms in obtaining all task offloading delays. However, the workload by standard deviation approach is about 90% lower than that of the GA and NSA algorithms, which effectively optimizes the performance of load balancing and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

With the explosive growth of edge computing, huge amounts of data are being generated in billions of edge devices. It is really difficult to balance detection efficiency and detection accuracy at the same time for object detection on multiple edge devices. However, there are few studies to investigate and improve the collaboration between cloud computing and edge computing considering realistic challenges, such as limited computation capacities, network congestion and long latency. To tackle these challenges, we propose a new multi-model license plate detection hybrid methodology with the tradeoff between efficiency and accuracy to process the tasks of license plate detection at the edge nodes and the cloud server. We also design a new probability-based offloading initialization algorithm that not only obtains reasonable initial solutions but also facilitates the accuracy of license plate detection. In addition, we introduce an adaptive offloading framework by gravitational genetic searching algorithm (GGSA), which can comprehensively consider influential factors such as license plate detection time, queuing time, energy consumption, image quality, and accuracy. GGSA is helpful for Quality-of-Service (QoS) enhancement. Extensive experiments show that our proposed GGSA offloading framework exhibits good performance in collaborative edge and cloud computing of license plate detection compared with other methods. It demonstrate that when compared with traditional all tasks are executed on the cloud server (AC), the offloading effect of GGSA can be improved by 50.31%. Besides, the offloading framework has strong portability when making real-time offloading decisions.

Under demanding operational conditions such as traffic surges, coverage issues, and low latency requirements, terrestrial networks may become inadequate to provide the expected service levels to users and applications. Moreover, when natural disasters or physical calamities occur, the existing network infrastructure may collapse, leading to formidable challenges for emergency communications in the area served. In order to provide wireless connectivity as well as facilitate a capacity boost under transient high service load situations, a substitute or auxiliary fast-deployable network is needed. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks are well suited for such needs thanks to their high mobility and flexibility. In this work, we consider an edge network consisting of UAVs equipped with wireless access points. These software-defined network nodes serve a latency-sensitive workload of mobile users in an edge-to-cloud continuum setting. We investigate prioritization-based task offloading to support prioritized services in this on-demand aerial network. To serve this end, we construct an offloading management optimization model to minimize the overall penalty due to priority-weighted delay against task deadlines. Since the defined assignment problem is NP-hard, we also propose three heuristic algorithms as well as a branch and bound style quasi-optimal task offloading algorithm and investigate how the system performs under different operating conditions by conducting simulation-based experiments. Moreover, we made an open-source contribution to Mininet-WiFi to have independent Wi-Fi mediums, which were compulsory for simultaneous packet transfers on different Wi-Fi mediums.

Nowadays, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) devices and their services and applications are gaining popularity and attracting considerable attention in different fields of our daily life. Nevertheless, most of these applications and services require more powerful computational resources and energy, and their limited battery capacity and processing power make it difficult to run them on a single device. Edge-Cloud Computing (ECC) is emerging as a new paradigm to cope with the challenges of these applications, which moves computing resources to the edge of the network and remote cloud, thereby alleviating the overhead through task offloading. Even though ECC offers substantial benefits for these devices, the limited bandwidth condition in the case of simultaneous offloading via the same channel with increasing data transmission of these applications has not been adequately addressed. Moreover, protecting the data through transmission remains a significant concern that still needs to be addressed. Therefore, in this paper, to bypass the limited bandwidth and address the potential security threats challenge, a new compression, security, and energy-aware task offloading framework is proposed for the ECC system environment. Specifically, we first introduce an efficient layer of compression to smartly reduce the transmission data over the channel. In addition, to address the security issue, a new layer of security based on an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) cryptographic technique is presented to protect offloaded and sensitive data from different vulnerabilities. Subsequently, task offloading, data compression, and security are jointly formulated as a mixed integer problem whose objective is to reduce the overall energy of the system under latency constraints. Finally, simulation results reveal that our model is scalable and can cause a significant reduction in energy consumption (i.e., 19%, 18%, 21%, 14.5%, 13.1% and 12%) with respect to other benchmarks (i.e., local, edge, cloud and further benchmark models).

Motivated by the pervasiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the current "smart everything" scenario, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the most recent research at the intersection of both domains, focusing on the design and development of specific mechanisms for enabling a collaborative inference across edge devices towards the in situ execution of highly complex state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs), despite the resource-constrained nature of such infrastructures. In particular, the review discusses the most salient approaches conceived along those lines, elaborating on the specificities of the partitioning schemes and the parallelism paradigms explored, providing an organized and schematic discussion of the underlying workflows and associated communication patterns, as well as the architectural aspects of the DNNs that have driven the design of such techniques, while also highlighting both the primary challenges encountered at the design and operational levels and the specific adjustments or enhancements explored in response to them.

Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is a promising technology for supporting computation-intensive vehicular applications with low latency at the network edges. Vehicles offload their tasks to VEC servers (VECSs) to improve the quality of service (QoS) of the applications. However, the high density of vehicles and VECSs and the mobility of vehicles increase channel interference and deteriorate the channel condition, resulting in increased power consumption and latency. Therefore, we proposed a task offloading method with the power control considering dynamic channel interference and conditions in a vehicular environment. The objective is to maximize the throughput of a VEC system under the power constraints of a vehicle. We leverage deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to achieve superior performance in complex environments and high-dimensional inputs. However, most conventional methods adopted the multi-agent DRL approach that makes decisions using only local information, which can result in poor performance, while single-agent DRL approaches require excessive data exchanges because data needs to be concentrated in an agent. To address these challenges, we adopt a federated deep reinforcement learning (FL) method that combines centralized and distributed approaches to the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) framework. The experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method in terms of the throughput and queueing delay of vehicles in dynamic vehicular networks.

Mobile edge computational power faces the difficulty of balancing the energy consumption of many devices and workloads as science and technology advance. Most related research focuses on exploiting edge server computing performance to reduce mobile device energy consumption and task execution time during task processing. Existing research, however, shows that there is no adequate answer to the energy consumption balances between multi-device and multitasking. The present edge computing system model has been updated to address this energy consumption balance problem. We present a blockchain-based analytical method for the energy utilization balance optimization problem of multi-mobile devices and multitasking and an optimistic scenario on this foundation. An investigation of the corresponding approximation ratio is performed. Compared to the total energy demand optimization method and the random algorithm, many simulation studies have been carried out. Compared to the random process, the testing findings demonstrate that the suggested greedy algorithm can improve average performance by 66.59 percent in terms of energy balance. Furthermore, when the minimum transmission power of the mobile device is between five and six dBm, the greedy algorithm nearly achieves the best solution when compared to the brute force technique under the classical task topology.

Mobile edge computing (MEC), which sinks the functions of cloud servers, has become an emerging paradigm to solve the contradiction between delay-sensitive tasks and resource-constrained terminals. Task offloading assisted by service caching in a collaborative manner can reduce delay and balance the edge load in MEC. Due to the limited storage resources of edge servers, it is a significant issue to develop a dynamical service caching strategy according to the actual variable user demands in task offloading. Therefore, this paper investigates the collaborative task offloading problem assisted by a dynamical caching strategy in MEC. Furthermore, a two-level computing strategy called joint task offloading and service caching (JTOSC) is proposed to solve the optimized problem. The outer layer in JTOSC iteratively updates the service caching decisions based on the Gibbs sampling. The inner layer in JTOSC adopts the fairness-aware allocation algorithm and the offloading revenue preference-based bilateral matching algorithm to get a great computing resource allocation and task offloading scheme. The simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy outperforms the other four comparison strategies in terms of maximum offloading delay, service cache hit rate, and edge load balance.
