RESUMEN

This paper presents an expression to determine the complex wave impedance of a substrate-integrated waveguide for the dominant TE10 propagation mode, notably enhancing the accuracy in modeling the corresponding imaginary part. This was accomplished by systematically identifying the need to consider additional conductor losses caused by the interaction of the propagating fields with the conductor material. In fact, by using the proposed expression, the complex impedance can straightforwardly be determined by combining propagation constant data, and the resistance that represents the loss associated with longitudinal currents occurring at the top and bottom walls, which are influenced by the conductor surface roughness. This allows for completely describing the characteristics of the waveguide when assuming uniform propagation along its length. Furthermore, since the voltage-current, the power-current, and the power-voltage impedances can easily be obtained from the wave impedance, the proposal enables representing the matching characteristics of the waveguide for circuit design purposes. An agreement between simulated and experimental insertion loss is achieved for substrate-integrated waveguides of two different widths when reconstructing the corresponding S-parameters using the determined wave impedance.

CONTEXT: Due to advances in synthesizing lower-dimensional materials, there is the challenge of finding the wave equation that effectively describes quantum particles moving on 1D and 2D domains. Jensen and Koppe and Da Costa independently introduced a confining potential formalism showing that the effective constrained dynamics is subjected to a scalar geometry-induced potential; for the confinement to a curve, the potential depends on the curve's curvature function. METHOD: To characterize the π electrons in polyenes, we follow two approaches. First, we utilize a weakened Coulomb potential associated with a spiral curve. The solution to the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions yields Bessel functions, and the spectrum is obtained analytically. We employ the particle-in-a-box model in the second approach, incorporating effective mass corrections. The π - π ∗ transitions of polyenes were calculated in good experimental agreement with both approaches, although with different wave functions.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) is significantly higher in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) than in the general population. Strategies for the prevention of fatal arrhythmias are often insufficient, highlighting the need for additional non-invasive diagnostic tools. The T-wave heterogeneity (TWH) index measures variations in ventricular repolarization and has emerged as a promising predictor for severe ventricular arrhythmias. Although the EMPA-REG trial reported reduced cardiovascular mortality with empagliflozin, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates the potential of empagliflozin in mitigating cardiac electrical instability in patients with T2DM and coronary heart disease (CHD) by examining changes in TWH. METHODS: Participants were adult outpatients with T2DM and CHD who exhibited TWH > 80 µV at baseline. They received a 25 mg daily dose of empagliflozin and were evaluated clinically including electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements at baseline and after 4 weeks. TWH was computed from leads V4, V5, and V6 using a validated technique. The primary study outcome was a significant (p < 0.05) change in TWH following empagliflozin administration. RESULTS: An initial review of 6,000 medical records pinpointed 800 patients for TWH evaluation. Of these, 412 exhibited TWH above 80 µV, with 97 completing clinical assessments and 90 meeting the criteria for high cardiovascular risk enrollment. Empagliflozin adherence exceeded 80%, resulting in notable reductions in blood pressure without affecting heart rate. Side effects were generally mild, with 13.3% experiencing Level 1 hypoglycemia, alongside infrequent urinary and genital infections. The treatment consistently reduced mean TWH from 116 to 103 µV (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The EMPATHY-HEART trial preliminarily suggests that empagliflozin decreases heterogeneity in ventricular repolarization among patients with T2DM and CHD. This reduction in TWH may provide insight into the mechanism behind the decreased cardiovascular mortality observed in previous trials, potentially offering a therapeutic pathway to mitigate the risk of severe arrhythmias in this population. A solvothermal synthesis of ultrasmall cerium oxide nanoparticles (USCeOxNPs) with an average size of 0.73 ± 0.07 nm using deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a stabilizing medium at a temperature of 90 ºC is reported. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to morphologically characterize the USCeOxNPs. These revealed approximately spherical shapes with emission lines characteristic of cerium. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) was used to determine the crystalline structure of the cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs), revealing the presence of crystalline cubic structures. The USCeOxNPs-DES/CB film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which demonstrated the spherical characteristic of CB with layers slightly covered by DES residues. DES was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), indicating its formation through hydrogen bonds between the precursors. An electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) determination in biological fluids was developed using the USCeOxNPs together with carbon black (CB). An enhanced current response was observed on DA voltammetric determination, and this can be attributed to the USCeOxNPs. This sensor displayed linear responses for DA in the range 5.0 × 10-7 mol L-1 to 3.2 × 10-4 mol L-1, with a limit of detection of 80 nmol L-1. Besides detectability, excellent performances were verified for repeatability and anti-interference. The sensor based on USCeOxNPs synthesized in DES in a simpler and environmentally friendly way was successfully applied to determine DA in biological matrix.

INTRODUCTION: The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a valuable tool for interpreting ventricular repolarization. This article aims to broaden the diagnostic scope beyond the conventional ischemia-centric approach, integrating an understanding of pathophisiological influences on ST-T wave changes. METHODS: A review was conducted on the physiological underpinnings of ventricular repolarization and the pathophisiological processes that can change ECG patterns. The research encompassed primary repolarization abnormalities due to uniform variations in ventricular action potential, secondary changes from electrical or mechanical alterations, and non-ischemic conditions influencing ST-T segments. RESULTS: Primary T waves are characterized by symmetrical waves with broad bases and variable QT intervals, indicative of direct myocardial action potential modifications due to ischemia, electrolyte imbalances, and channelopathies. Secondary T waves are asymmetric and often unassociated with significant QT interval changes, suggesting depolarization alterations or changes in cardiac geometry and contractility. CONCLUSION: We advocate for a unified ECG analysis, recognizing primary and secondary ST-T changes, and their clinical implications. Our proposed analytical framework enhances the clinician's ability to discern a wide array of cardiac conditions, extending diagnostic accuracy beyond myocardial ischemia.

Food additives are chemical compounds intentionally added during foodstuff production to control technological functions, such as pH, viscosity, stability (color, flavor, taste, and odor), homogeneity, and loss of nutritional value. These compounds are fundamental in inhibition the degradation process and prolonging the shelf life of foodstuffs. However, their inadequate employment or overconsumption can adversely affect consumers' health with the development of allergies, hematological, autoimmune, and reproductive disorders, as well as the development of some types of cancer. Thus, the development and application of simple, fast, low-cost, sensitivity, and selectivity analytical methods for identifying and quantifying food additives from various chemical classes and in different foodstuffs are fundamental to quality control and ensuring food safety. This review presents trends in the detection of food additives in foodstuffs using differential pulse voltammetry and square wave voltammetry, the main pulse voltammetric techniques, indicating the advantages, drawbacks, and applicability in food analysis. Are discussed the importance of adequate choices of working electrode materials in the improvements of analytical results, allowing reliable, accurate, and inexpensive voltammetric methods for detecting these compounds in foodstuffs samples.

RESUMEN

Plasmonic nanoantennas have proven to be efficient transducers of electromagnetic to mechanical energy and vice versa. The sudden thermal expansion of these structures after an ultrafast optical pulsed excitation leads to the emission of hypersonic acoustic waves to the supporting substrate, which can be detected by another antenna that acts as a high-sensitivity mechanical probe due to the strong modulation of its optical response. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a nanoscale acoustic lens comprised of 11 gold nanodisks whose collective oscillation at gigahertz frequencies gives rise to an interference pattern that results in a diffraction-limited surface acoustic beam of about 340 nm width, with an amplitude contrast of 60%. Via spatially decoupled pump-probe experiments, we were able to map the radiated acoustic energy in the proximity of the focal area, obtaining a very good agreement with the continuum elastic theory.

We compared cardiovascular parameters obtained with the Mobil-O-Graph and functional capacity assessed by the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) before and after Heart Transplantation (HT) and also compared the cardiovascular parameters and the functional capacity of candidates for HT with a control group. Peripheral and central vascular pressures increased after surgery. Similar results were observed in cardiac output and pulse wave velocity. The significant increase in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) postoperatively was not followed by an increase in the functional capacity. 24 candidates for HT and 24 controls were also compared. Functional capacity was significantly lower in the HT candidates compared to controls. Stroke volume, systolic, diastolic, and pulse pressure measured peripherally and centrally were lower in the HT candidates when compared to controls. Despite the significant increase in peripheral and central blood pressures after surgery, the patients were normotensive. The 143.85% increase in LVEF in the postoperative period was not able to positively affect functional capacity. Furthermore, the lower values of LVEF, systolic volume, central and peripheral arterial pressures in the candidates for HT are consistent with the characteristics signs of advanced heart failure, negatively impacting functional capacity, as observed by the lower DASI score.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether objective sleep parameters are associated with cognitive function (CF) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with chronic insomnia (CI) and whether the severity of these disorders is related to CF. METHOD: Thirty patients with MDD with CI attending a tertiary care institution underwent two consecutive nights of polysomnographic (PSG) recording and a battery of neuropsychological tests, which included episodic memory, sustained attention, working memory, and executive function. The severity of MDD and CI was assessed by clinical scales. We examined the relationship between PSG parameters and CF, as well as whether the severity of the disorders is related to CF. RESULTS: Linear regression analysis revealed that total sleep time (TST) was positively associated with higher learning and recall of episodic memory, as well as better attention. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) showed a positive association with better working memory. Furthermore, wake after sleep onset (WASO) was negatively associated with episodic memory and lower attention. No significant relationships were found between the severity of MDD or CI with CF. CONCLUSION: Both sleep duration and depth are positively associated with several aspects of CF in patients with MDD with CI. Conversely, a lack of sleep maintenance is negatively related to CF in these patients. These findings could help identify modifiable therapeutic targets to reduce CF impairment.

CONTEXT: Push-pull compounds are model systems and have numerous applications. By changing their substituents, properties are modified and new molecules for different applications can be designed. The work investigates the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of push-pull para-nitroaniline (pNA). This molecule has applications in pharmaceuticals, azo dyes, corrosion inhibitors, and optoelectronics. Both electron-donor and electron-withdrawing groups were investigated. Employing machine learning-derived Hammett's constants σm, σm0, σR, and σI, correlations between substituents and electronic properties were obtained. Overall, the σm0 constants presented the best correlation with HOMO and LUMO energies, whereas the σR constants best agreed with the transition energy of the first band and HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Electron-donors, which have lower σR values, redshift the absorption spectrum and reduce the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Conversely, electron-withdrawing groups (higher σR's) blueshift the spectrum and increase the energy gap. The second band maximum energies, studied here for the first time, showed no correlation with σ but tended to increase with σ. A comprehensive charge transfer (CT) analysis of the main transition of all systems was also carried out. We found that donors (lower σ's) slightly enhance the CT character of the unsubstituted pNA, whereas acceptors (higher σ's) decrease it, leading to increased local excitations within the aromatic ring. The overall CT variation is not large, except for pNA-SO2H, which considerably decreases the total CT value. We found that the strong electron donors pNA-OH, pNA-OCH3, and pNA-NH2, which have the smallest HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and lowest σ's, have potential for optoelectronic applications. The results show that none of the studied molecules is fluorescent in the gas phase. However, pNA-NH2 and pNA-COOH in cyclohexane and water reveal fluorescence upon solvation. METHODS: We investigated theoretically employing the second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) ab initio wave function and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) the gas-phase electronic absorption spectra of 15 derivatives of p-nitroaniline (pNA). The investigated substituents include both electron-donor (C6H5, CCH, CH3, NH2, OCH3, and OH,) and electron-withdrawing (Br, CCl3, CF3, Cl, CN, COOH, F, NO2, and SO2H) substituents.

Introduction: Aortic stiffness assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV) is an important predictor to evaluate the risk of hypertensive patients. However, it is underutilized in clinical practice. We aimed to identify the optimal cutoff SAGE score that would indicate a risk PWV ≥ 10 m/s in Brazilian ambulatory hypertensive patients. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study. Patients underwent central blood pressure measurement using a validated oscillometric device from August 2020 to December 2021. A ROC curve was constructed using the Youden statistic to define the best score to identify those at high risk for PWV ≥ 10 m/s. Results: A total of 212 hypertensive individuals were selected. The mean age was 64.0 ± 12.4 years and 57.5% were female. The following comorbidities were present: overweight (47.6%), obesity (34.3%), and diabetes (25.0%). Most of the sample (68.9%) had PWV < 10 m/s. According to Youden's statistic, a cutoff point of 6 provided the optimal combination of sensitivity and specificity for identifying patients with a PWV ≥ 10 m/s. This cutoff achieved sensitivity of 97.0%, and specificity of 82.9%. In clinical practice, however, a cutoff point of 7 (where score values of at least 7 were considered to indicate high risk) had a positive likelihood ratio of 8.2 and a negative likelihood ration of 0.346, making this the ideal choice by accurately excluding patients who are less likely to have PWV ≥ 10 m/s. Conclusion: A SAGE score ≥7 identified Brazilian hypertensive patients with a high risk of PWV ≥ 10 m/s.

The high prevalences of non-communicable chronic diseases have been increasing in the population, including healthcare professionals, therefore, the association between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and arterial stiffness (AS) was evaluated through a cross-sectional study conducted with female community health workers (CHWs) from Vitória, Espírito Santo. LTPA was assessed using the international physical activity questionnaire, and AS was measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV ). Participants were considered active if they engaged in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate LTPA, 150 minutes per week of combined moderate and vigorous LTPA, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous LTPA. Elevated AS was classified using a cut-off point of cfPWV ≥ the 90th percentile, stratified by sex and age group for a healthy population. Statistical tests were performed to compare proportions and means, with a p-value of <0.05 considered significant. A total of 221 CHWs (mean age 47.6 ± 8.6 years) were evaluated. Physical inactivity and elevated AS were observed in approximately 78% and 23% of the participants, respectively. A higher percentage of elevated AS was observed among CHWs who did not meet the LTPA recommendations (22.0%) compared to those who were physically active (6.0%) (p<0.001). Lower mean LTPA (15.6 ± 47.7 minutes per week) was observed among CHWs with elevated AS (p = 0.020). Physical inactivity is associated with elevated arterial stiffness. It is suggested that the promotion of LTPA be encouraged among professionals working on the front line of the Unified Health System, even if they perform work-related physical activities.


As prevalências de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis vêm crescendo na população, incluindo em profissio-nais da saúde, portanto, avaliou-se a ocorrência de rigidez arterial (RA) elevada segundo atividade física no lazer (AFL) através de estudo transversal realizado com agentes comunitárias de saúde (ACS) do sexo feminino de Vitória, Espírito Santo. A AFL foi avaliada pela versão longa do International Physical Ac-tivity Questionnaire e a RA foi mensurada pela Velocidade de Onda de Pulso carotídeo-femoral ( VOPc-f ). As participantes foram consideradas ativas quando praticavam pelo menos 150 minutos/semana de AFL moderada ou 150 minutos/semana da soma da AFL moderada e vigorosa ou 75 minutos/semana de AFL vigorosa. Para a classificação da RA elevada foi utilizado o ponto de corte que considera valor de VOPc-f ≥ ao percentil 90 estratificado por sexo e faixa etária para população saudável. Foram executados testes estatísticos para comparação de proporções e médias. Um valor de p<0,05 foi considerado significativo. Foram avaliadas 221 ACS (média de idade 47,6 ± 8,6 anos). Observou-se inatividade física no lazer e RA elevada em cerca de 78% e 23% das participantes, respectivamente. Foi evidenciado maior percentual de RA elevada entre as ACS que não atingiram a recomendação de AFL (22,0%) em comparação às ativas fisicamente (6,0%) (p<0,001). Menores médias de AFL (15,6 ± 47,7) foram observadas entre as ACS com RA elevada (p = 0,020). Conclui-se que a ocorrência de RA elevada foi maior entre as ACS inativas no lazer. Sugere-se que a promoção de AFL seja estimulada entre os profissionais que trabalham na linha de frente do Sistema Único de Saúde, ainda que realizem atividades físicas relacionadas ao trabalho.

CONTEXT: The outcomes related to cardiovascular risk (CVR) in patients with nonclassical form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH) are unknown, especially those related to therapeutic options, including low doses of glucocorticoids (GCs) or oral contraceptive pills. OBJECTIVES: to analyze CVR by markers of atherosclerosis in females with nonclassical form according to therapeutic options. DESIGN AND SETTING: a cross-sectional study at a tertiary center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-seven females with NCAH (33.4 ± 10 years) were subdivided into: G1 (n = 28) treated with dexamethasone (0.14 ± 0.05 mg/m2/day); G2 (n = 19) with oral contraceptive pills; and G3 (30 matched controls). CVR was analyzed through serum lipids, HOMA-IR, inflammatory cytokines levels and quantitative image evaluations (pulse wave velocity-PWV, endothelial function by flow mediated dilatation-FMD, carotid intima media thickness-CIMT and visceral fat-VAT by abdominal tomography. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in BMI, HOMA-IR, HDL-cholesterol, or triglyceride levels among groups (p > 0.05). Serum interleukin-6 levels ​​were higher in G1 than in G2 (p = 0.048), and interleukin-8 levels were higher in G1 than in G2/3 (p = 0.008). There were no statistically significant differences in VAT, PWV, FMD or CIMT among groups (p > 0.05). In multivariable regression analysis, there was no statistically significant association between glucocorticoid dose and evaluated outcomes. CONCLUSION: Adult females with NCAH did not show increased CVR using methodologies for detection of precocious atherosclerosis. Although patients receiving dexamethasone therapy had increased IL-6 and 8 levels, these data were not associated with radiological markers of atherosclerosis. Our cohort was composed of young adults and should be reevaluated in a long-term follow-up.

Ibogaine is a potent atypical psychedelic that has gained considerable attention due to its antiaddictive and antidepressant properties in preclinical and clinical studies. Previous research from our group showed that ibogaine suppresses sleep and produces an altered wakefulness state, which resembles natural REM sleep. However, after systemic administration, ibogaine is rapidly metabolized to noribogaine, which also shows antiaddictive effects but with a distinct pharmacological profile, making this drug a promising therapeutic candidate. Therefore, we still ignore whether the sleep/wake alterations depend on ibogaine or its principal metabolite noribogaine. To answer this question, we conducted polysomnographic recordings in rats following the administration of pure noribogaine. Our results show that noribogaine promotes wakefulness while reducing slow-wave sleep and blocking REM sleep, similar to our previous results reported for ibogaine administration. Thus, we shed new evidence on the mechanisms by which iboga alkaloids work in the brain.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars attain high resolution without compromising privacy while being unaffected by environmental factors such as rain, dust, and fog. This study explores the challenges of using mmWave radars for the simultaneous detection of people and small animals, a critical concern in applications like indoor wireless energy transfer systems. This work proposes innovative methodologies for enhancing detection accuracy and overcoming the inherent difficulties posed by differences in target size and volume. In particular, we explore two distinct positioning scenarios that involve up to four mmWave radars in an indoor environment to detect and track both humans and small animals. We compare the outcomes achieved through the implementation of three distinct data-fusion methods. It was shown that using a single radar without the application of a tracking algorithm resulted in a sensitivity of 46.1%. However, this sensitivity significantly increased to 97.10% upon utilizing four radars using with the optimal fusion method and tracking. This improvement highlights the effectiveness of employing multiple radars together with data fusion techniques, significantly enhancing sensitivity and reliability in target detection.

Augmentation index and pulse wave velocity are markers of vascular compromise and independent predictors of cardiovascular risk and mortality. While the link between shift work and heightened cardiovascular risk is established, the intricate genesis of early cardiovascular outcomes in shift workers remains incompletely understood. However, there is evidence that sleep duration plays a role in this regard. Here we evaluate the association of total sleep time with pulse wave velocity, augmentation index, and central blood pressure in night shift workers. This study cross-sectionally evaluated the association of total sleep time evaluated by 10-day monitoring actigraphy with augmentation index, pulse wave velocity, and brachial and central blood pressure evaluated by oscillometry in nursing professionals, 63 shift workers (89% women; age = 45.0 ± 10.5 years), and 17 (100% women; age = 41.8 ± 15.6) day workers. There were no differences in the studied variables between shift workers and day workers. Results of correlation analysis demonstrated that pulse wave velocity, central systolic blood pressure, central diastolic blood pressure, brachial systolic blood pressure, and brachial diastolic blood pressure tended to have significant correlation with each other, while these measures did not have a significant relationship with augmentation index in both groups. However, results of adjusted restricted cubic spline analysis showed a U-shaped-curve association between total sleep time and augmentation index (p < 0.001 for trend) with a nadir at 300-360 min of total sleep time in shift workers. The present study showed that total sleep time, assessed by actigraphy, had a U-shaped association with augmentation index in shift workers, which indicated better characteristics of vascular functionality when sleep time was 5-6 h in the workers studied.

Intracranial hypertension (IH) is a life-threating condition especially for the brain injured patient. In such cases, an external ventricular drain (EVD) or an intraparenchymal bolt are the conventional gold standard for intracranial pressure (ICPi) monitoring. However, these techniques have several limitations. Therefore, identifying an ideal screening method for IH is important to avoid the unnecessary placement of ICPi and expedite its introduction in patients who require it. A potential screening tool is the ICP wave morphology (ICPW) which changes according to the intracranial volume-pressure curve. Specifically, the P2/P1 ratio of the ICPW has shown promise as a triage test to indicate normal ICP. In this study, we propose evaluating the noninvasive ICPW (nICPW-B4C sensor) as a screening method for ICPi monitoring in patients with moderate to high probability of IH. This is a retrospective analysis of a prospective, multicenter study that recruited adult patients requiring ICPi monitoring from both Federal University of São Paulo and University of São Paulo Medical School Hospitals. ICPi values and the nICPW parameters were obtained from both the invasive and the noninvasive methods simultaneously 5 min after the closure of the EVD drainage. ICP assessment was performed using a catheter inserted into the ventricle and connected to a pressure transducer and a drainage system. The B4C sensor was positioned on the patient's scalp without the need for trichotomy, surgical incision or trepanation, and the morphology of the ICP waves acquired through a strain sensor that can detect and monitor skull bone deformations caused by changes in ICP. All patients were monitored using this noninvasive system for at least 10 min per session. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to describe discriminatory power of the P2/P1 ratio for IH, with emphasis in the Negative Predictive value (NPV), based on the Youden index, and the negative likelihood ratio [LR-]. Recruitment occurred from August 2017 to March 2020. A total of 69 patients fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria in the two centers and a total of 111 monitorizations were performed. The mean P2/P1 ratio value in the sample was 1.12. The mean P2/P1 value in the no IH population was 1.01 meanwhile in the IH population was 1.32 (p < 0.01). The best Youden index for the mean P2/P1 ratio was with a cut-off value of 1.13 showing a sensitivity of 93%, specificity of 60%, and a NPV of 97%, as well as an AUC of 0.83 to predict IH. With the 1.13 cut-off value for P2/P1 ratio, the LR- for IH was 0.11, corresponding to a strong performance in ruling out the condition (IH), with an approximate 45% reduction in condition probability after a negative test (ICPW). To conclude, the P2/P1 ratio of the noninvasive ICP waveform showed in this study a high Negative Predictive Value and Likelihood Ratio in different acute neurological conditions to rule out IH. As a result, this parameter may be beneficial in situations where invasive methods are not feasible or unavailable and to screen high-risk patients for potential invasive ICP monitoring.Trial registration: At clinicaltrials.gov under numbers NCT05121155 (Registered 16 November 2021-retrospectively registered) and NCT03144219 (Registered 30 September 2022-retrospectively registered).

Significance: Continuous-wave functional near-infrared spectroscopy has proved to be a valuable tool for assessing hemodynamic activity in the human brain in a non-invasively and inexpensive way. However, most of the current processing/analysis methods assume the head is a homogeneous medium, and hence do not appropriately correct for the signal coming from the scalp. This effect can be reduced by considering light propagation in a layered model of the human head, being the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations the gold standard to this end. However, this implies large computation times and demanding hardware capabilities. Aim: In this work, we study the feasibility of replacing the homogeneous model and the MC simulations by means of analytical multilayered models, combining in this way, the speed and simplicity of implementation of the former with the robustness and accuracy of the latter. Approach: Oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin (HbO and HbR, respectively) concentration changes were proposed in two different layers of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based meshed model of the human head, and then these changes were retrieved by means of (i) a typical homogeneous reconstruction and (ii) a theoretical layered reconstruction. Results: Results suggest that the use of analytical models of light propagation in layered models outperforms the results obtained using traditional homogeneous reconstruction algorithms, providing much more accurate results for both, the extra- and the cerebral tissues. We also compare the analytical layered reconstruction with MC-based reconstructions, achieving similar degrees of accuracy, especially in the gray matter layer, but much faster (between 4 and 5 orders of magnitude). Conclusions: We have successfully developed, implemented, and validated a method for retrieving chromophore concentration changes in the human brain, combining the simplicity and speed of the traditional homogeneous reconstruction algorithms with robustness and accuracy much more similar to those provided by MC simulations.

We study the impact of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) on the stability of charge-density wave (CDW) in systems with large electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Here, the EPC is considered in the framework of the Holstein model at the half-filled square lattice. We obtain the phase diagram of the Rashba-Holstein model using the Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, and identify the boundaries of the CDW and Rashba metal phases. We notice that the RSOC disfavors the CDW phase, driving the system to a correlated Rashba metal. Also, we employ a cluster perturbation theory (CPT) approach to investigate the phase diagram beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The quantum correlations captured by CPT indicate that the RSOC is even more detrimental to CDW than previously anticipated. That is, the Rashba metal region is observed to be expanded in comparison to the mean-field case. Additionally, we investigate pairing correlations, and the results further strengthen the identification of critical points.

Multiplexing is a valuable strategy to boost throughput and improve clinical accuracy. Exploiting the vertical, meshed design of reproducible and low-cost ultra-dense electrochemical chips, the unprecedented single-response multiplexing of typical label-free biosensors is reported. Using a cheap, handheld one-channel workstation and a single redox probe, that is, ferro/ferricyanide, the recognition events taking place on two spatially resolved locations of the same working electrode can be tracked along a single voltammetry scan by collecting the electrochemical signatures of the probe in relation to different quasi-reference electrodes, Au (0 V) and Ag/AgCl ink (+0.2 V). This spatial isolation prevents crosstalk between the redox tags and interferences over functionalization and binding steps, representing an advantage over the existing non-spatially resolved single-response multiplex strategies. As proof of concept, peptide-tethered immunosensors are demonstrated to provide the duplex detection of COVID-19 antibodies, thereby doubling the throughput while achieving 100% accuracy in serum samples. The approach is envisioned to enable broad applications in high-throughput and multi-analyte platforms, as it can be tailored to other biosensing devices and formats.
