RESUMEN

Obesity is a major public health problem with a prevalence increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. There is an urgent need for efficient approaches to weight management. Diet induced thermogenesis (DIT) is the process by which the body increases its energy expenditure in response to a meal. It is estimated to account for approximately 10 % of total energy expenditure and is considered a potentially modifiable component of energy expenditure. The palatability of food, meal's composition in macronutrients, the circadian rhythm and sleep, as well as individual's characteristics such as age, the presence of obesity or diabetes mellitus, and the proportion of physical activity are the main factors that affect DIT. However, studies examining DIT are mostly characterized by small sample size and the methodology varies considerably between studies. It seems that even today there is a lot of contradiction between the relative studies. Inspite of that, future research might lead to the modification of DIT in order to achieve some weight loss in obese people.

Current scientific literature is deficient in detailing the optimal timing for conducting bariatric surgery in relation to kidney transplantation. In this study, we performed a retrospective evaluation of kidney transplant recipients with BMI >35 kg/m2. It aimed to provide data on those who received both sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and kidney transplantation (KT) simultaneously, as well as on patients who underwent SG and KT at different times, either before or after. In addition, the acceptance levels of the bariatric surgery among different scenarios were assessed. Our findings demonstrated that combined KT and SG led to successful weight loss, in contrast to undergoing kidney transplant alone, while maintaining comparable rates of graft and patient survival. Weight loss was similar between recipients who had a combined operation and those who underwent SG following the transplant. Additionally, over a median time frame of 1.7 years, patients who underwent SG before KT exhibited a statistically significant reduction in BMI at the time of the transplant. Notably, our study highlights that patients offered the combined procedure were significantly more likely to undergo SG compared to those for whom SG was presented at a different operative time than the transplant.

BACKGROUND: Body weight loss (BWL) after gastrectomy impact on the short- and long-term outcomes. Oral nutritional supplement (ONS) has potential to prevent BWL in patients after gastrectomy. However, there is no consistent evidence supporting the beneficial effects of ONS on BWL, muscle strength and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ONS formulated primarily with carbohydrate and protein on BWL, muscle strength, and HRQoL. METHODS: This will be a multicenter, open-label, parallel, randomized controlled trial in patients with gastric cancer who will undergo gastrectomy. A total of 120 patients who will undergo gastrectomy will be randomly assigned to the ONS group or usual care (control) group in a 1:1 ratio. The stratification factors will be the clinical stage (I or ≥ II) and surgical procedures (total gastrectomy or other procedure). In the ONS group, the patients will receive 400 kcal (400 ml)/day of ONS from postoperative day 5 to 7, and the intervention will continue postoperatively for 8 weeks. The control group patients will be given a regular diet. The primary outcome will be the percentage of BWL (%BWL) from baseline to 8 weeks postoperatively. The secondary outcomes will be muscle strength (handgrip strength), HRQoL (EORTC QLQ-C30, QLQ-OG25, EQ-5D-5L), nutritional status (hemoglobin, lymphocyte count, albumin), and dietary intake. All analyses will be performed on an intention-to-treat basis. DISCUSSION: This study will provide evidence showing whether or not ONS with simple nutritional ingredients can improve patient adherence and HRQoL by reducing BWL after gastrectomy. If supported by the study results, nutritional support with simple nutrients will be recommended to patients after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents an impending global health challenge. Current management strategies often face setbacks, emphasizing the need for preclinical models that faithfully mimic the human disease and its comorbidities. The liver disease progression aggravation diet (LIDPAD), a diet-induced murine model, extensively characterized under thermoneutral conditions and refined diets is introduced to ensure reproducibility and minimize species differences. LIDPAD recapitulates key phenotypic, genetic, and metabolic hallmarks of human MASLD, including multiorgan communications, and disease progression within 4 to 16 weeks. These findings reveal gut-liver dysregulation as an early event and compensatory pancreatic islet hyperplasia, underscoring the gut-pancreas axis in MASLD pathogenesis. A robust computational pipeline is also detailed for transcriptomic-guided disease staging, validated against multiple harmonized human hepatic transcriptomic datasets, thereby enabling comparative studies between human and mouse models. This approach underscores the remarkable similarity of the LIDPAD model to human MASLD. The LIDPAD model fidelity to human MASLD is further confirmed by its responsiveness to dietary interventions, with improvements in metabolic profiles, liver histopathology, hepatic transcriptomes, and gut microbial diversity. These results, alongside the closely aligned changing disease-associated molecular signatures between the human MASLD and LIDPAD model, affirm the model's relevance and potential for driving therapeutic development.

Background and aim: Gut microbiota influences energy homeostasis in part through circulating hormones. Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP)-2 is a biomarker whose increase in systemic circulation is associated with positive effects on body weight and metabolism. In a recent clinical trial, probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus HA-114 supplementation showed positive effects on eating behaviors and insulin resistance in overweight participants undergoing a weight-loss intervention. In this context, this ancillary study aimed at assessing the impact of L. rhamnosus HA-114 supplementation on plasma IGFBP-2 levels in these individuals, and whether this modulation correlated with changes in fat mass, energy metabolism, and eating behaviors. Methods: Fasting plasma IGFBP-2 concentrations were quantified in 100 overweight or obese men and women enrolled in a 12-week diet-based weight reduction program (-500 kcal/day), in combination with probiotic L. rhamnosus HA-114 or placebo supplementation. Baseline and changes in circulating IGFBP-2 concentrations were correlated with anthropometric parameter, glucose and lipid metabolism, cardiorespiratory function and eating behaviors. Results: On average, the intervention reduced BMI by 4.6 % and increased IGFBP-2 by 13 %, regardless of supplementation group. Individuals who presented an increase in IGFBP-2 levels had significantly greater reductions in BMI. Changes in IGFBP-2 levels were correlated with loss in fat mass (r = 0.2, p < 0.001) in the probiotic-supplemented group, but not with other metabolic parameters or eating behaviors. Baseline IGFBP-2 levels were not associated with weight loss or improvements in cardiometabolic parameters. Conclusion: Probiotic supplementation with L. rhamnosus HA-114 did not modulate plasma IGFBP-2 levels. Changes in IGFBP-2 levels were correlated with greater reductions in BMI, but not with other metabolic parameters or eating behaviors, indicating that the benefits of HA-114 on eating behaviors are likely independent of IGFBP-2. Additional changes in microbiota might be required to modulate IGFBP-2 and observe its associations with eating behaviors and cardiometabolic improvements.

Objective: Given that low early (4 weeks) weight loss (WL) predicts longer-term WL, the purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with poor early WL. Methods: 438 adults with overweight/obesity participating in an Internet-delivered behavioral WL program provided weights at baseline and 4 weeks. Participants were stratified by percent WL at 4 weeks: LOW: <2% WL, MEDIUM: 2 to <4% WL, HIGH: ≥4% WL and groups were compared on baseline variables (demographics, physical activity, and psychosocial measures) and 4-week intervention adherence. Results: 37.4%, 40.9%, and 21.7% of participants had LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH early WL respectively. LOW was more likely to be female compared to HIGH and less likely to be non-Hispanic White compared to MEDIUM and HIGH (p's<0.05). After controlling for demographic differences, LOW had lower baseline physical activity compared to HIGH and watched fewer video lessons, self-monitored calorie intake and weight on fewer days, and were less likely to achieve the exercise goal compared to MEDIUM and HIGH (p's<0.05). Conclusion: Findings can inform future adaptive interventions which tailor treatment based upon early WL to improve WL outcomes for more individuals.

Objective: Cross-sectional research has demonstrated that internalized weight stigma (IWS) is associated with less engagement in weight management behaviors, including physical activity. However, limited research has explored longitudinal relationships among IWS, physical activity, and weight loss. This study examined longitudinal associations of changes in IWS, physical activity, and weight and tested whether physical activity mediated the relationship between IWS and weight change. Methods: Individuals with obesity and high IWS (N = 105) participated in a 72-week behavioral weight loss intervention, with or without a weight stigma intervention. Measures of IWS (Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire), physical activity (accelerometry and self-report), and weight were collected at baseline and weeks 20, 46 and 72. Correlations examined relationships among changes in variables from baseline to all timepoints, controlling for treatment condition. Mediation, controlling for treatment condition, tested whether IWS reductions during the first 20 weeks predicted greater weight loss at weeks 46 and 72 via increased physical activity between weeks 20 and 46 or 72. Results: Decreases in IWS at week 20 were associated with greater week-20 weight loss (r = 0.265, p = 0.012). Physical activity was not a significant mediator, but greater reductions in IWS at week 20 predicted greater week-46 weight loss with or without controlling for physical activity (WSSQ: b = 0.30, confidence interval: 0.12, 0.54). Significant associations were not found at week 72. Conclusion: Initial reductions in IWS were associated with greater week-46 weight loss. Further research should investigate whether reducing IWS early in obesity treatment enhances long-term outcomes. Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03704064).

Background Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become a primary option within bariatric surgery (BS), exhibiting favorable outcomes in terms of weight reduction and improvement of associated health conditions. This study was conducted to assess the outcomes of LSG in morbid obesity (MO) in terms of weight reduction and improvement of comorbidities. Materials and methods A prospective follow-up study was conducted from January 2021 to January 2023 at the Department of Surgery, 7 Air Force Hospital, Kanpur. The study was approved by the institutional ethical committee with protocol no. IEC/612/2020, including 25 patients diagnosed with MO (BMI >40kg/m2) who underwent LSG. Patients were followed up at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery to track improvements in comorbidities and weight loss. Pre- and post-operative photos were taken, and any complications during the follow-up period were noted. Results Most participants in the study were middle-aged individuals, and 84% of the cohort had common comorbidities such as hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM). LSG led to significant and sustained weight loss, with patients achieving an average reduction of 31.56 kg by the 12th month following the surgery. Moreover, substantial improvements in comorbidities, particularly HTN (76.9%) and DM (80%), were observed. However, not all comorbidities exhibited similar rates of recovery, highlighting the need for tailored management strategies. Using a correlation test, no significant correlation was found between the percentage over ideal body weight (IBW) and the reduction in excess weight, as indicated by a p-value exceeding 0.05. Conclusion LSG is an effective treatment for severe obesity, delivering significant weight loss and notable improvements in metabolic health and overall quality of life.

The establishment of a Caloric balance has been classically discussed as the means to induce weight loss. Recently, the idea of nutrient balance as opposed to Caloric balance has emerged as a better means to induce weight loss. This investigation compared differences in weight loss between a diet based on a nutrient balanced diet compared to a Caloric balance diet. 53 (27M/26F) active overfat individuals (30.7+/- 7.1 years) were randomly (matched for age, gender, training history) assigned within an 8-week intervention to follow either a self-selected diet (control) or a diet based on following a Caloric balance (%Cal/day) or a nutrient balance (g/kg/day) in conjunction with a periodized exercise regimen to determine effectiveness for each diet to induce weight loss. Nutrient balance group had significantly different changes (p < 0.05) in fat-free mass (2.26 (2.02, 2.49) kg versus 0.42 (-0.40, 1.24) kg) and fat mass (-5.96 (-5.34, -6.58) kg versus -4.08 (-3.92, -5.92) kg) relative to the Caloric balance group and was more effective at meeting nutritional requirements for protein (ES = 0.65 (0.48, 0.85)) and lipids (ES = 0.24 (-0.09, 0.98)) than the Caloric balance group. Nutrient balance was subjectively scored as easier to follow and more likely to be self-selected. Using a nutrient balance diet may be more effective at inducing beneficial body compositional changes and shows being a more self-selected dietary method when compared to a Caloric balance diet. Therefore, it may be a better choice for advice when offering treatments to those who are attempting to lose weight or maintain weight loss.

The bioaccessibility of tannins as antioxidants in meat is essential to maximise their effectiveness in protecting the product. This property determines the amount of tannins available to interact with meat components, inhibiting lipid and protein oxidation and, consequently, prolonging shelf life and preserving the sensory quality of the product. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioaccessibility of condensed tannins (CT) from Acacia mearnsii extract (AME) and their effect on the physico-chemical characteristics of fattened lamb meat. Thirty-six Dorset × Hampshire lambs (3 months old and 20.8 ± 3.3 kg live weight) were used. The lambs were distributed equally (n = 9) into four treatments: T1, T2, T3 and T4, which included a basal diet plus 0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% of CT from AME, respectively. At the end of the fattening period, bioaccessibility was evaluated, the animals were slaughtered and a sample of the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle was collected to assess colour, lipid oxidation, cooking weight loss and shear force on days 1, 4, 7 and 14 of shelf-life, in samples preserved at -20 °C. In addition, the long chain fatty acid profile was analysed. A completely randomised design was used, and the means were compared with Tukey's test (P < 0.05). The mean lightness (L*), yellowness (b*) and hue (H*) values were higher for T3 and T4. The addition of CT did not affect (P > 0.05) redness (a*), cooking weight loss (CWL) or shear force (SF). T4 decreased (P < 0.05) stearic acid and increased cis-9 trans-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Bioaccessibility was higher in the supplemented groups (T1 < T2, T3 and T4). In conclusion, supplementing CT from AME in the diet of lambs did not reduce lipid oxidation, but T3 or T4 improved some aspects of meat colour and CLA deposition.

Obesity in the United States has risen to 42 percent of its adult population and is similarly problematic in many other countries. Although the U.S. government has provided education on healthy eating and the need to exercise regularly, behavioral obesity treatments have largely failed to sustain reductions in weight. Self-regulation, and the incorporation of exercise for its psychological impacts on eating, has sometimes been targeted. While there has been sporadic investigation into the carry-over of exercise-related self-regulation to eating-related self-regulation, the present aim is to further inquiry in that area to inform future treatment content for improved effects. Women enrolled in community-based obesity treatments with either a self-regulation (n = 106) or education (n = 54) focus were assessed on changes in exercise- and eating-related self-regulation, negative mood, completed exercise, and weight. Improvements were significantly greater in the self-regulation-focused group. After controlling for initial change in eating-related self-regulation, change in that measure from Month 3 to 6 was significantly predicted by change in exercise-related self-regulation during the initial 3 treatment months. This suggested a carry-over effect. A stronger predictive relationship was associated with the self-regulation-focused treatment. In further analyses, paths from changes in exercise→negative mood→self-regulation of both exercise and eating were significant. Increase in eating-related self-regulation was significantly associated with weight loss over 6, 12, and 24 months. The self-regulation-focused group had stronger relationships, again. Findings suggested utility in targeting exercise-related self-regulation to impact later change in eating-related self-regulation, and the use of exercise-associated mood improvement to bolster participants' self-regulation capabilities.

BACKGROUND: There is little information about the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and nutritional status and weight loss after bariatric surgery. This study investigated the interactive effect of eight obesity-related SNPs and nutritional status on weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). METHOD: This is a case-control study. After 1-year follow-up, the patients who underwent RYGB were dividing into two groups. The case group consisted of patients who lost more than 50% of their excess body weight (EBW%) 1 year after the surgery. The control group included patients who lost < 50% of EBW at same time frame. Then, the relationship between eight SNPs related to UCP2, FTO, LEPR, GHRL, and NPY genes with weight loss were checked. RESULTS: In this study, 160 patients were recruited. The median of age for case and control group were 43 and 42 respectively. The presence of mutant variant NPYrs16147 had a significant relationship in terms of weight loss between the two groups (P > 0.05). In dominant model, two SNPs, UCP2 rs659366 and UCP2 rs660339, showed protective effect of the vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the presence mutant variant of NPYrs16147 is directly related to the incidence of weight loss greater than 50% of EBW. However, it is apparent individual behavioral, dietary, and other factors may have more influence on weight loss among patients underwent RYGB.

Obesity is an emerging worldwide health care issue. It has a direct and indirect bearing on health-related outcomes. Rates of overweight and obesity have grown manifold in the past few decades globally. Once considered a problem of the affluent societies only, obesity is now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries also. Single anastomosis gastric bypass (SAGB) is one of the combined bariatric procedures adopted for weight loss in patients failing maximal medical therapy. Internal hernia (IH) after SAGB is a less recognized clinical entity. We hereby report our experience with four such cases under light of current available literature. Bariatric procedures are associated with some short- and long-term limitations. IHs are among one of the dreaded complications associated with some bariatric procedures with rates reaching up to 16% after classic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The incidence of IH post-SAGB is comparatively rare and is very less frequently reported. Symptoms of IH post-SAGB are quite nonspecific and depend on the time and extent of herniation. The symptoms can vary from benign intermittent colicky pain to severe intra-abdominal pain presenting as a surgical emergency. Routine physical examination and biochemical investigations are nonspecific and unreliable in evaluating those patients. Computed tomography (CT) with intravenous and oral contrast is the most common imaging modality used for preoperative evaluation of those symptoms. The CT findings can be unremarkable in patients having intermittent symptoms/herniation. Diagnostic laparoscopy is the cornerstone for diagnosis and management of patients having high suspicion of IH.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a predictive model for monitoring chronological weight loss during the early postoperative period following bariatric surgery in Korean patients with morbid obesity. Materials and Methods: The baseline characteristics and postoperative weight loss outcomes were collected for up to 24 months after surgery in patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The factors influencing weight loss outcomes were analyzed, and longitudinal percentile charts were plotted using quantile regression models adjusted for the identified independent factors. Results: The analysis included 491 and 274 patients who underwent SG and RYGB, respectively, of whom 225 (29.4%) were men. A positive association was found between the maximum percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) and female sex, body mass index (BMI) ≥40, and age <40 years. Among patients who reached nadir BMI or had at least 12 months of follow-up data (n=304), 7.6% exhibited inadequate weight loss (TWL <20%). The predictors of insufficient weight loss were older age (>40 years), male sex, and psychological problems. Centile charts were generated for the entire cohort, incorporating age, sex, and the type of procedure as covariates. Conclusion: The percentile charts proposed in the present study can assist surgeons and healthcare providers in gauging patients' progress toward their weight loss goals and determining the timing of adjunctive intervention in poor responders during early postoperative follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Obesity may increase surgical complexity in patients undergoing abdominal surgery by limiting visualization and increasing the risk of peri-operative complications. A preoperative reduction in weight and liver volume may improve surgical outcomes. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of a low-calorie diet (LCD) versus a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) in reducing weight and liver volume prior to laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using the following inclusion criteria: obese patients undergoing preoperative weight loss using a VLCD or LCD, evaluation of liver volume reduction, and the use of an imaging modality before and after the diet. RESULTS: A total of 814 patients from 21 different studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, with 544 female patients (66.8%) and a mean age range between 24 and 54 years old. There was a total mean weight loss of 6.42% and mean liver volume reduction of 16.7%. Meta-analysis demonstrated that a preoperative diet (LCD or VLCD) significantly reduced weight [SMD = - 0.68; 95% CI (- 0.93, - 0.42), I2 = 82%, p ≤ 0.01] and liver volume [SMD = - 2.03; 95% CI (- 4.00, - 0.06), I2 = 94%, p ≤ 0.01]. When assessed individually, a VLCD led to significant weight reduction [SMD = - 0.79; CI (- 1.24; - 0.34), p ≤ 0.01, I2 = 90%], as did an LCD [SMD = - 0.60; CI (- 0.90; - 0.29), p ≤ 0.01, I2 = 68%). Similarly, there was a significant reduction in liver volume following a VLCD [SMD = - 1.40; CI (- 2.77, - 0.03), p ≤ 0.01, I2 = 96%], and an LCD [SMD = - 2.66; CI (- 6.13, 0.81), p ≤ 0.01, I2 = 93%]. However, there was no significant difference between the two regimens. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative restrictive calorie diets are effective in reducing weight and liver volume prior to laparoscopic surgery. Whilst a VLCD was better than an LCD at reducing both weight and liver volume, the difference was not significant.

Obesity, primarily characterized by excessive fat accumulation, is a multifactorial chronic disease with an increasing global prevalence. Despite the well-documented epidemiology and significant advances in understanding its pathophysiology and clinical implications, the impact of sex is typically overlooked in obesity research. Worldwide, women have a higher likelihood to become obese compared to men. Although women are offered weight loss interventions more often and at earlier stages than men, they are more vulnerable to psychopathology. Men, on the other hand, are less likely to pursue weight loss intervention and are more susceptible to the metabolic implications of obesity. In this narrative review, we comprehensively explored sex- and gender-specific differences in the development of obesity, focusing on a variety of biological variables, such as body composition, fat distribution and energy partitioning, the impact of sex steroid hormones and gut microbiota diversity, chromosomal and genetic variables, and behavioural and sociocultural variables influencing obesity development in men and women. Sex differences in obesity-related comorbidities and varying effectiveness of different weight loss interventions are also extensively discussed.

AIMS: While the benefit of weight loss in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is recognized, its association with CVD mortality remains controversial. This study investigates the association between weight loss and the incidence of CVD outcomes. METHODS: This was a 7.2-year retrospective cohort study of 1,020,533 adults aged 40-80 years who underwent at least two general health checkups within a 2-year interval in Korea. Weight was measured by trained examiners at certified hospitals. We used Cox proportional hazards models to examine the association between weight loss and the incidence of CVD outcomes. RESULTS: Weight loss of more than 3 % was associated with an increased risk of combined CVD events (hazard ratio [HR] for moderate weight loss: 1.24, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-1.28; HR for severe weight loss: 1.45, 95 % CI: 1.33-1.57). Weight loss was significantly associated with an increased risk of both nonfatal CVD events and CVD mortality, but regular exercise mitigated the adverse effects on CVD mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Weight loss of more than 3% is associated with an increased risk of a combined CVD events, consistent across most risk factors. However, regular exercise may reduce the adverse effects on CVD mortality, suggesting a potential protective role of physical activity.

This meta-analysis aimed to summarise clinical evidence regarding the effect of supplementation with cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) on different cardiometabolic outcomes. An extensive literature survey was carried out until 10 April 2024. A total of 415 participants from six eligible studies were included. The overall results from the random-effects model indicated that cornelian cherry supplementation significantly reduced body weight (standardised mean difference [SMD] = -0.27, confidence interval [CI]: -0.52, -0.02, p = 0.03), body mass index (SMD = -0.42, CI: -0.73, -0.12, p = 0.007), fasting blood glucose (SMD = -0.46, CI: -0.74, -0.18, p = 0.001), glycated haemoglobin (SMD = -0.70, CI: -1.19, -0.22, p = 0.005), and HOMA-IR (SMD = -0.89, CI: -1.62, -0.16, p = 0.02), while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly increased (SMD = 0.38, CI: 0.10, 0.65, p = 0.007). A sensitivity analysis showed that cornelian cherry supplementation significantly reduced total plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and insulin levels. Cornelian cherry supplementation did not significantly affect waist circumference and liver parameters among the participants. Considering these findings, this meta-analysis indicates that supplementation with cornelian cherry may impact diverse cardiometabolic risk factors among individuals considered to be at a high risk.

The rising obesity epidemic requires effective and sustainable weight loss intervention strategies that take into account both of individual preferences and environmental impact. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative digital biohacking approach for dietary modifications in promoting sustainable weight loss and reducing carbon footprint impact. A pilot study was conducted involving four participants who monitored their weight, diet, and activities over the course of a year. Data on food consumption, carbon footprint impact, calorie intake, macronutrient composition, weight, and energy expenditure were collected. A digital replica of the metabolism based on nutritional information, the Personalized Metabolic Avatar (PMA), was used to simulate weight changes, plan, and execute the digital biohacking approach to dietary interventions. The dietary modifications suggested by the digital biohacking approach resulted in an average daily calorie reduction of 236.78 kcal (14.24%) and a 15.12% reduction in carbon footprint impact (-736.48 gCO2eq) per participant. Digital biohacking simulations using PMA showed significant differences in weight change compared to actual recorded data, indicating effective weight reduction with the digital biohacking diet. Additionally, linear regression analysis on real data revealed a significant correlation between adherence to the suggested diet and weight loss. In conclusion, the digital biohacking recommendations provide a personalized and sustainable approach to weight loss, simultaneously reducing calorie intake and minimizing the carbon footprint impact. This approach shows promise in combating obesity while considering both individual preferences and environmental sustainability.

Plant-based diets (PBDs) are gaining attention as a sustainable and health-conscious alternative for managing various chronic conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In the absence of pharmacological treatments, exploring the potential of lifestyle modifications to improve biochemical and pathological outcomes becomes crucial. The adoption of PBDs has demonstrated beneficial effects such as weight control, increased metabolic health and improved coexisting diseases. Nonetheless, challenges persist, including adherence difficulties, ensuring nutritional adequacy, and addressing potential deficiencies. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the impact of PBDs on MASLD, emphasizing the need for tailored dietary interventions with professional support to optimize their effectiveness in preventing and treating metabolic diseases.
