INTRODUCTION: With increasing morbidity and risk of death, obesity has become a serious health problem largely attributable to difficulties in finding proper treatments for related diseases. Many studies show how detecting abnormal eating behaviors could be useful in developing effective clinical treatments. This study aims at validating the Greek version of the Eating Behaviors Assessment for Obesity (EBA-O). METHOD: After a double English/Greek forward/backward translation of the EBA-O, 294 participants completed the Greek version (GR-EBA-O), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, the Binge Eating Scale, and the Yale Food Addiction Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and construct validity were calculated, and Two-way MANOVA was computed with the factors of GR-EBA-O controlling for sex and BMI categories. RESULTS: CFA confirmed the second-order five factors (i.e., food addiction, night eating, binge eating, sweet eating, and prandial hyperphagia) structure of the original EBA-O with excellent fit indices. GR-EBA-O factors were highly correlated. The GR-EBA-O subscales were also significantly correlated with the remaining measures, demonstrating good concurrent validity. CONCLUSION: The Greek version of the EBA-O has demonstrated sound psychometric properties and appears a reliable and user-friendly tool to identify pathological eating behaviors in obesity. The Highly Processed Food Withdrawal Scale (ProWS) is a 29-item measure that operationalizes physical and psychological indicators of withdrawal symptoms associated with cutting down on the consumption of ultra-processed foods. The current study developed a briefer 7-item version of the ProWS (modified ProWS; mProWS) using the participant sample from the ProWS validation paper (n = 231). Then, in an independent sample recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk, 244 participants (55.3% females) completed the mProWS, the ProWS, and measures of eating-related constructs in order to evaluate the psychometric properties of the mProWS, relative to the ProWS. The mProWS and the ProWS performed similarly on indexes of reliability, convergent validity with addictive-like eating behavior (e.g., Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 symptom count), discriminant validity with distinct measures (e.g., cognitive desire to restrict food consumption), and incremental validity evidenced by associations with weight cycling above and beyond body mass index (BMI) and YFAS 2.0 symptoms. The mProWS may be an appropriate choice for studies with higher participant burden (e.g., ecological momentary assessment) to assess withdrawal symptoms in real-time when they occur in response to cutting down on ultra-processed foods.

PURPOSE: Although a number of investigations have been carried out on the marketing outcomes of parasocial relationships (PSR) with food influencers on social media, little attention has been paid to the potential contribution of these one-sided emotional bonds to followers' eating attitudes and habits. Drawing on the Parasocial Theory, the role of parasocial attachment with food influencers was investigated in predicting eating disorders, food addiction, and grazing. To increase the accuracy of PSR measurement, a brief self-report scale was developed to gauge social media users' feelings of mutual awareness, attention, and adjustment with their favorite food influencer at a distance through social media. METHODS: Participants were a convenience sample of 405 Iranian social media users (231women; Mage = 28.16, SDage = 9.40), who followed a favorite food influencer on social media. RESULTS: The 8-item Parasocial Relationship with Favorite Food Influencer Scale (PSRFFIS) revealed a unidimensional structure with excellent content and construct validity and internal consistency. Regarding gender differences, men showed stronger parasocial attachment to their favorite food influencers. Adjusting age, gender, and subjective social status as control variables, PSR with favorite food influencers partially contributed to the explanation of eating disorder symptom severity, food addiction, and grazing. CONCLUSION: These findings show that PSR with favorite food influencers appears to be associated with followers' craving for food, which, in turn, may contribute to maladaptive eating habits. This highlights media-related factors, such as PSR with food influencers, as potential drivers of dysfunctional eating habits in the digital age, particularly in countries like Iran where disordered eating is prevalent. This study evaluates how food addiction is related to chronotype, social jetlag, and psychological pain. Of the participants (n = 1,035 university students), 16.6% had a morning chronotype, 25.1% had an evening chronotype, and 25.1% were clinically addicted to eating. The mean sleep durations for participants were 7.41 ± 2.18 h and 8.95 ± 3.0 h on weekdays and weekends, respectively. The mean misalignment time for social jetlag was 1.45 ± 1.5 h. Food addiction, psychological pain, and social jetlag levels were high among participants with the evening chronotype. The risk factors for food addiction included being female, having an evening chronotype, and having high body mass index levels and psychological pain. The total indirect effect of psychological pain and social jetlag on the relationship between chronotype and food addiction was 20.6%. However, the social jetlag effect is relatively minor compared to psychological pain. The significant conclusions of this study are as follows. Clinical food addiction is prevalent among students, and a strong direct correlation between chronotype and food addiction was observed. The study emphasizes the importance of being aware of chronotype and mental status in establishing a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Introduction: The study of food addiction (FA) has become relevant due to its high prevalence, the negative impact on quality of life, and its association with neuropsychological and psychiatric symptoms. Several studies have provided scientific support for these associations, however, the results are contradictory. Additionally, studies have unsuccessfully elucidated the true nature of the failures in executive functioning in people with FA symptomatology, particularly when it comes to executive deficits. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to establish whether the presence of executive dysfunction, depressive symptoms and binge eating problems, as well as high reward sensitivity entails a greater severity in FA traits and high body mass index (BMI) in a sample of Mexican adults. Methods: The sample consisted of Mexican men and women between 21-59 years (n = 36); who completed self-report questionnaires and performance tests to measure the study variables. Additionally, BMI was estimated with self-reported height and weight. Results: Our results showed that a high number of FA symptoms were associated with higher executive dysfunction scores, greater reward sensitivity, and more severe depressive and binge eating problems. Furthermore, factors that are more strongly associated with higher scores of FA include severe executive deficits, greater activation of the punishment avoidance system, and persistence in the search for reward when the depressive symptoms increased. The factors that best explained changes in the estimated BMI of women were a decreased crystallized intellectual capacity and the inability to control food intake as the number of FA symptoms increased. Discussion: In summary, the cognitive functioning profile characterized by general failure of the executive functioning, as well as a greater activation of the Punishment Avoidance System and persistence in the search for reward, were associated with greater severity of FA symptoms, especially when the depressive symptomatology was severe. In parallel, the psychopathology in participants associated with FA confirms the contribution of anxious and depressive symptomatology and borderline personality traits which could facilitate the expression of clinically relevant FA symptoms in women. Finally, we found that decreased crystallized intellectual capacity and inability to control food intake were linked to higher BMI when the number of FA symptoms increased.

The relationship between the consumption of hyper-palatable ultra-processed foods and the process of addiction gains notoriety due to its relationship with obesity. Food addiction is a complex phenomenon intrinsically related to the individual's behavioral, emotional, and subjective aspects. Therefore, using classical approaches to sensory science may be insufficient to understand better the individual's sensory experience with hyper-palatable foods. In this context, sensory and consumer science techniques with holistic approaches have been aimed at accessing more subjective consumer perceptions. This study used the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS 2.0) to investigate the prevalence of food addiction and the Structured Projective Mapping (S-MP) and Sorting techniques to verify how individuals with and without food addiction perceive and understand different types of food. The prevalence of food addiction was 21.77% (n = 59 out of 271) and was associated with a higher BMI but not with sociodemographic aspects. Projective Mapping (RV = 0.937) and Sorting (RV = 0.934) indicated that perception in relation to attributes such as health and pleasure was similar for all investigated foods in individuals with or without food addiction. The presence of addictive eating behavior does not seem to be related to the way individuals perceive foods from different categories, for example, minimally or highly processed and hyper-palatable foods.

University students are a vulnerable population to the development of disordered eating, such as food addiction (FA) and grazing. FA is an emerging concept characterized by an intense desire to eat hyper-palatable foods. Grazing is characterized by the repetitive and unplanned ingestion of food throughout a period of time. Both FA and grazing have been associated with increased scores of negative urgency (NU) and difficulties in emotion regulation (ER). This study aims to evaluate the frequency of FA and grazing in a university population and to test the direct, total, and indirect effects-via FA-of ER and NU on repetitive eating and compulsive grazing. A total of 338 participants responded to a set of psychological measures assessing these variables. Thirty-six (10.7%) participants met the criteria for FA diagnosis and 184 (54.4%) presented grazing. Confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable fit indexes for the model tested (χ2(1695) = 3167.575; p < 0.001; CFI = 0.955; NFI = 0.908; TLI = 0.953; SRMR = 0.085; RMSEA = 0.051; CI 90% (0.048; 0.053); P[RMSEA ≤ 0.05] = 0.318) and suggested that FA partially mediated the effect of difficulties in ER and NU on grazing, specifically on compulsive grazing. The results indicate that individuals with difficulties in ER and impulse control under negative emotions are more likely to engage in grazing if food addiction scores are higher. These results highlight the importance of assessing these variables, particularly in at-risk populations such as university students.

OBJECTIVE: Relationships exist between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress, yet previous research is primarily cross-sectional with adults from Western contexts. We examined the prospective relationships between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: Over three time points (Time 1, baseline; Time 2, 6-months; Time 3, 12-months) spanning 1 year, we examined cross-sectional and bi-directional relationships between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress in Chinese adolescents (N = 589; aged 14-18 years at baseline). Pearson correlations and cross-lagged models examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress. RESULTS: Cross-sectional correlations suggested positive relationships between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress at each time point. Regarding bi-directional relationships, higher psychological distress was associated with both higher weight bias internalization and higher food addiction symptoms at the following time points. However, food addiction symptoms and weight bias internalization were not prospectively associated. Time 2 psychological distress did not significantly mediate the relationship between Time 1 weight bias internalization and Time 3 food addiction symptoms. DISCUSSION: Findings suggest no direct longitudinal link between food addiction symptoms and weight bias internalization and vice versa. However, findings do suggest that psychological distress is temporally associated with higher food addiction symptoms and weight bias internalization in Chinese adolescents. Targeting psychological distress may prove useful in treatments of food addiction symptoms and weight bias internalization in Chinese adolescents. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: Positive associations exist between food addiction symptoms, weight bias internalization, and psychological distress, but findings are largely cross-sectional and bound to adult populations from Western contexts. Using a longitudinal design in Chinese adolescents, findings suggested that baseline psychological distress was associated with higher food addiction symptoms and higher weight bias internalization at follow-up time points. Treatments targeting psychological distress may be helpful in reducing food addiction symptoms and weight bias internalization in Chinese adolescents.

Food addiction (FA) has been associated with binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity at varying levels of severity and treatment outcomes. Despite much debate and scientific interest in FA, the mechanisms that underlie its co-occurrence with both conditions are not yet well understood. In order to understand this relationship, this study explores FA in a clinical sample of individuals with BED and obesity using network analysis (NA). A total of 303 patients (151 with BED and 152 with obesity) completed a battery of tests that investigated eating psychopathology, eating behaviours, emotional dysregulation, depression and FA. Two different NAs were conducted to investigate the interaction between these variables and FA. The BED and obesity groups were comparable in age (38 ± 14 vs. 42 ± 13 years), body mass index (38.8 ± 8.5 vs 42.4 ± 7.8), sex and demographics. According to the expected influence values, binge eating severity and depression were identified as the central nodes in both networks. In the BED group, binge eating severity was the central node and showed strong connections to both FA and grazing. In contrast, in the obesity group, depression was the central node, but its connections were weak, with only marginal associations to FA. These results suggest that FA represents an important and distinct construct of the two populations. In patients with BED, FA is intimately connected to other loss-of-control-related eating behaviours, such as binge eating and grazing. Conversely, in those with obesity, depression explains the relationship of FA with pathological eating behaviours. The presence of FA seems to be a distinguishing characteristic in the psychopathology of patients suffering from obesity with and without BED, and this could have implications for the prevention, treatment and management of these disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research shows highly palatable foods can elicit addictive eating behaviours or 'food addiction'. Early adolescence is theorised to be a vulnerable period for the onset of addictive eating behaviours, yet minimal research has examined this. This study explored the prevalence and correlates of addictive eating behaviours in a large early adolescent sample. METHODS: 6640 Australian adolescents (Mage = 12.7 ± 0.5, 49%F) completed an online survey. Addictive eating was measured with the Child Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS-C). Negative-binomial generalised linear models examined associations between addictive eating symptoms and high psychological distress, energy drink consumption, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption, alcohol use, and cigarette use. RESULTS: Mean YFAS-C symptom criteria count was 1.36 ± 1.47 (of 7). 18.3% of participants met 3+ symptoms, 7.5% endorsed impairment and 5.3% met the diagnostic threshold for food addiction. All examined behavioural and mental health variables were significantly associated with addictive eating symptoms. Effects were largest for high psychological distress and cigarette use; with those exhibiting high psychological distress meeting 0.65 more criteria (95%CI = 0.58-0.72, p < 0.001) and those who smoked a cigarette meeting 0.51 more criteria (95%CI = 0.26-0.76, p < 0.001). High psychological distress and consumption of SSB and energy drinks remained significant when modelling all predictors together. CONCLUSION: In this large adolescent study, addictive eating symptoms were common. Further research should establish directionality and causal mechanisms behind the association between mental ill-health, alcohol and tobacco use, and addictive eating behaviours. Cross-disciplinary prevention initiatives that address shared underlying risk factors for addictive eating and mental ill-health may offer efficient yet substantial public health benefits.

Eating disorders are considered one of the psychiatric disorders with a higher risk of death. Food addiction, related to some food addictive-like behaviours, is often in comorbidity with eating disorders and is associated with worse psychopathology. The present study aims to outline the food addiction profile, investigated using the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0), in 122 adolescents (median age: 15.6 years) suffering from eating disorders and to investigate its association with psychopathology. Patients filled out the Youth Self Report, the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children 2, The Children Depression Inventory 2, and the Eating Disorder Inventory 3 (EDI-3). Pearson's chi-square test and multiple correspondence analysis were used to identify profiles. The mean symptom count was 2.8 ± 2.7. The "withdrawal" symptom was the most frequent (51%) and the most associated with clinical scores. The diagnosis of bulimia nervosa and the EDI-3 bulimia scale resulted to be the only variables to be associated with positive YFAS 2.0 symptoms. Conversely, anorexia nervosa, restrictive and atypical, was not associated with YFAS 2.0 symptoms. In conclusion, outlining the food addiction profile of eating disorders may give information about a patient's phenotype and could help to identify specific treatment models.

Food addiction is associated with both physical and mental health conditions, such as obesity and depression, and is considered a public health problem. Based on life history (LH) theory, this study aimed to test the association between unpredictable childhood environment and food addiction in adulthood and to examine LH strategies and attitudes toward self as psychological mediators of this association. A random sample of 1010 adults, aged from 18 to 88 years (44.8% male; Mage = 38.52, SDage = 14.53), voluntarily participated in an anonymous telephone survey conducted in Macao, China. The results of a path analysis showed the significant and positive direct effect of childhood unpredictability on food addiction and its negative association with slow LH strategy, which in turn was negatively correlated with food addiction. In addition, slow LH strategy and self-judgment, rather than self-kindness, acted as serial mediators in the association between childhood unpredictability and food addiction. These findings support the applicability of LH theory to understanding food addiction, as well as pointing to the potential risk effect of self-judgment for food addiction in adulthood. Self-judgment reduction may be a potential supplementary approach for future food addiction intervention.

Nascent and rapidly growing research into defining the concept of "food addiction" (FA) in relation to obesity is currently underway. Food addiction is present in a subset of patients who are overweight or have obesity, and its presence is associated with other psychosocial disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, impulse control disorders, and lower quality of life. Food addiction is associated with higher intake of and preference for highly processed foods that have addictive-like properties such as cravings, reward sensitivity, and impaired control. Food addiction is associated with less weight loss in patients with obesity utilizing diet and lifestyle-related interventions. In clinical practice, identifying the subset of patients with obesity with FA-related psychosocial constraints and continued emphasis on avoiding highly processed foods may improve obesity and weight management outcomes. Food addiction is thought to be an addictive-like phenotype.Food addiction is noted to have significant overlap with substance use disorder (SUD) and other eating disorders, but is currently not classified a diagnosis by DSM-IV and DSM-V criteria.Food addiction has similarities to SUD, such as cravings, reduced control over intake, increased impulsivity and altered reward-sensitivity.The Yale Food Addiction Scale, which is a clinical scale modeled by the DSM-IV and DSM-V criteria for SUD, has been used to quantify and study FA.

PURPOSE: Childhood trauma is associated with increased risk of obesity during adulthood, which may be associated with the development of food addiction. This study examined whether food addiction mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and obesity in young adults. METHODS: A sample of 512 young adults, aged 18 to 30 years, living with overweight and obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 25 kg/m2), from the United Kingdom participated in the study. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Yale Food Addiction Scale, and provided their current height and weight to compute their Body Mass Index (BMI). RESULTS: Using the PROCESS macro, a mediation analysis found that food addiction accounted for 45% of variance in the relationship between childhood trauma and BMI. Post hoc analyses were conducted to examine the mediating effect of food addiction across each of the five subscales of the CTQ (emotional/physical/sexual abuse and emotional/physical neglect). Food addiction accounted for 32% to 51% of the variance in the relationship between each CTQ subscale and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that experiences of childhood trauma are associated with the development of overweight and obesity during early adulthood and up to half of this relationship can be attributed to food addiction, which is likely used as a maladaptive coping mechanism in response to trauma. Young adults living with overweight and obesity who report experiences of childhood trauma may benefit from the support of clinical and counselling psychologists to improve their understanding of the underlying psychosocial factors that influence their eating behaviours. Recent evidence indicated that lifestyle modifications, especially mindful eating, might be effective interventions for treating food addiction (FA). Mindful eating practices have been considered to regulate emotional eating, which is one predictor of FA along with automatic eating behaviors, including emotional, impulsive, and habitual eating. Thus, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the effect of mindful eating on FA of university students. The research team collected the data with 2133 undergraduate students. The Mindful Eating Questionnaire examined the mindfulness status of the students, and the FA diagnosed by using the YALE Food Addiction Scale. 56.9% of participants were women, with a mean age of 21.5 ± 2.2 and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 22.5 ± 3.8 kg/m2. Although no significant differences were observed regarding sex (p > .05), the FA prevalence among men (16.1%) was higher than women. The overall prevalence of FA was 15.3%, which was 1.5 units higher among those with BMI ≥25 kg/m2. Also, FA diagnosis was significantly more prevalent among smokers and ex-smokers (p < .01). In addition, participants diagnosed with FA had a significantly lower mean mindful eating score (p < .001). Furthermore, those with lower mindfulness levels had a 4.96 higher risk of being food addicted (p < .000). Those with FA diagnosis had significantly lower scores regarding subscales of "disinhibition," "emotional eating," "control of eating," "mindfulness," and "interference" (p < .001). Consequently, it should be highlighted that determining the level of individuals' mindful eating may have remarkable and cumulative impacts on both obesity and FA in the long term. Thus, increasing mindful eating may be suggested as an essential strategy to control FA among young individuals.

Addiction in adolescence is increasing and has a significant impact on physical and mental health. Notably, addictions can be comorbid and affect each other. Despite the recent growing interest in food addiction (FA) and problematic smartphone use (PSU), few studies have investigated their association in adolescents. We investigated the relationship between FA and PSU in adolescents and the effects of eating behaviors. A total of 209 adolescents (44.5% male; mean age = 12.86 ± 0.7 years) participated in the current school-based community study. We found a positive correlation between the dimensional Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children 2.0 (dYFAS-C2.0) and the Smartphone Overdependence Scale after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. The high-risk PSU group accounted for 17.2% of participants. Furthermore, this group showed 2.3 times higher dYFAS-C2.0 scores than the general group. Emotional overeating and satiety responsiveness were correlated with PSU. A comprehensive evaluation of addiction symptoms is needed for proper intervention, especially in adolescents with symptoms of abnormal eating behaviors.

BACKGROUND: The Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) operationalizes food addiction (FA) by applying the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM 5) criteria for substance use disorder (SUD) to the overconsumption of highly processed foods. The YFAS 2.0 has been quantitatively validated across numerous populations, but has never undergone qualitative analysis. AIMS: Using qualitative methods we aimed to determine if the interpretation YFAS 2.0 is aligned with the DSM 5 conceptualization of SUD, to determine if any items are perceived as irrelevant to the lived-experience of FA, and to determine if there are constructs central to the lived-experience of FA that are not captured by the scale. METHODS: We interviewed 16 participants who met criteria for FA on the modified YFAS 2.0 using semi-structured interviews to understand each participants' interpretation of items on the scale and their perceptions of how the scale matched their lived-experience of FA. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to code responses and identify themes. RESULTS: Most interpretations aligned with the DSM 5 conceptualization of SUDs. Withdrawal and tolerance-related items were subject to some misinterpretations. Participants viewed problem-focused symptoms (e.g., interpersonal problems) as the least relevant to their lived-experience. Novel themes not included on the YFAS 2.0 (e.g., emotional eating) emerged. SUMMARY: Our study supports the validity of the YFAS 2.0 by showing consistency with the DSM 5 conceptualization of SUDs and consistency with the lived-experience of individuals who endorse FA. Future research should explore the novel themes that emerged in this study.

BACKGROUND: A first approach of a phenotypic characterization of food addiction (FA) found three clusters (dysfunctional, moderate and functional). Based on this previous classification, the aim of the present study is to explore treatment responses in the sample diagnosed with Eating Disorder(ED) of different FA profiles. METHODS: The sample was composed of 157 ED patients with FA positive, 90 with bulimia nervosa (BN), 36 with binge eating disorder (BED), and 31 with other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED). Different clinical variables and outcome indicators were evaluated. RESULTS: The clinical profile of the clusters present similar characteristics with the prior study, having the dysfunctional cluster the highest ED symptom levels, the worse psychopathology global state, and dysfunctional personality traits, while the functional one the lowest ED severity level, best psychological state, and more functional personality traits. The dysfunctional cluster was the one with lowest rates of full remission, the moderate one the higher rates of dropouts, and the functional one the highest of full remission. CONCLUSIONS: The results concerning treatment outcome were concordant with the severity of the FA clusters, being that the dysfunctional and moderate ones had worst treatment responses than the functional one.

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a high-risk period for development of addictive behavior. This may also apply to addiction-like eating of highly processed foods-commonly referred to as "food addiction". Adolescents with mental disorder may be at particularly elevated risk of developing food addiction as addiction often accompanies mental disorder. However, there are only few studies in adolescents investigating this potential comorbidity. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to examine the food addiction symptom load, as measured by the dimensional Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children-version 2.0 (dYFAS-C 2.0), among adolescents with a clinically verified mental disorder. METHOD: A total of 3529 adolescents aged 13-17 were drawn from the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register, stratified on six major diagnostic categories of mental disorders; psychotic disorders, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and attention deficit disorders. Via their parents, these adolescents were invited to participate in a web-based survey. Data on health and socioeconomic factors from the Danish registers were linked to both respondents and non-respondents, allowing for thorough attrition analysis and estimation of weighted dYFAS-C 2.0 scores. RESULTS: A total of 423 adolescents participated in the survey (response rate 12.0%). The mean weighted dYFAS-C 2.0 total score was 13.9 (95% CI 12.6; 14.9) for the entire sample and varied substantially across the diagnostic categories being highest for those with psychotic disorder, mean 18.4 (95% CI 14.6; 14.9), and affective disorders, mean 19.4. (95% CI 16.3; 22.5). Furthermore, the dYFAS-C 2.0 total score was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.33, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Food addiction symptomatology seems to be prevalent among adolescents with mental disorder, particularly affective and psychotic disorders. As obesity is a tremendous problem in individuals with mental disorder further investigation of food addiction in young people with mental disorder is called for. This could potentially aid in the identification of potential transdiagnostic targets for prevention and treatment of obesity in this group. BACKGROUND: Food addiction (FA) is a construct that has gained interest in recent years but its relevance in Mexican population is still unexplored. AIMS: The present study has the aims of explore FA in a community of Mexican population, as well as identifying the risk patterns associated with it, in relation to the different etiological factors that have been described such as impulsivity, emotional regulation and eating styles. Furthermore, to identify a predictive model of FA severity. METHODS: The sample consisted of 160 female and male university students of Pachuca city in México, who volunteered to participate in the study. Assessment included multidimensional measures for FA, eating disorder severity, eating disorder styles, emotional regulation and impulsivity. RESULTS: A screening of FA-probable was registered for 13.8% of the sample, while 8.1% met criteria for FA-present. The FA-present group differed from FA-absent in the impulsivity levels and in emotional eating style. Patients with FA-present differed from FA-probable in the impulsivity levels. Differences between FA-probable versus FA-absent were found in the restrained eating style. Path analysis evidenced that FA severity was directly associated with older age, worse eating style profile and higher impulsivity levels, and indirectly related with the ED symptom levels. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that it is possible to establish a specific predictive model of the development of FA and its severity in Mexican population to implement adequate prevention and treatment strategies. EVIDENCE LEVEL: Level III: evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies.
