RESUMEN

Human dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (hDHODH) is an attractive tumor target essential to de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis. Novel potent hDHODH inhibitors with low toxicity are urgently needed. Herein, we demonstrate the isolation of 25 ascochlorin (ASC) derivatives, including 13 new ones, from the coral-derived fungus Acremonium sclerotigenum, and several of them showed pronounced inhibitions against hDHODH and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines, MDA-MB-231/-468. Interestingly, we found that hDHODH is required for proliferation and survival of TNBC cells, and several ASCs significantly inhibited TNBC cell growth and induced their apoptosis via hDHODH inhibition. Furthermore, the novel and potent hDHODH inhibitors (1 and 21) efficiently suppressed tumor growth in patient-derived TNBC xenograft models without obvious body weight loss or overt toxicity in mice. Collectively, our findings offered a novel lead scaffold as the hDHODH inhibitor for further development of potent anticancer agents and a potential therapeutic strategy for TNBC.

Croton ferrugineus Kunth is an endemic species of Ecuador used in traditional medicine both for wound healing and as an antiseptic. In this study, fresh Croton ferrugineus leaves were collected and subjected to hydrodistillation for extraction of the essential oil. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined by gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector and gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer using a non-polar and a polar chromatographic column. The antibacterial activity was assayed against three Gram-positive bacteria, one Gram-negative bacterium and one dermatophyte fungus. The radical scavenging properties of the essential oil was evaluated by means of DPPH and ABTS assays. The chemical analysis allowed us to identify thirty-five compounds representing more than 99.95% of the total composition. Aliphatic sesquiterpene hydrocarbon trans-caryophyllene was the main constituent with 20.47 ± 1.25%. Other main compounds were myrcene (11.47 ± 1.56%), ß-phellandrene (10.55 ± 0.02%), germacrene D (7.60 ± 0.60%), and α-humulene (5.49 ± 0.38%). The essential oil from Croton ferrugineus presented moderate activity against Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) with an MIC of 1000 µg/mL, a scavenging capacity SC50 of 901 ± 20 µg/mL with the ABTS method, and very strong antiglucosidase activity with an IC50 of 146 ± 20 µg/mL.

Sargahydroquinoic acid (SHQA) is a major plastoquinone in Sargassum macrocarpum and has shown the capacity to prevent inflammation and oxidative stress. However, the protective mechanisms were unclear. The molecular mechanisms of SHQA on ameliorating inflammation and oxidative stress have been investigated, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. SHQA was isolated and purified from S. macrocarpum and the anti-inflammatory mechanisms were explored using LPS-stimulated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. SHQA did not change the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) but inhibited the activity of COX-2. As a result, SHQA significantly diminished the secretions of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and multiple pro-inflammatory cytokines. LPS-induced activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) was inhibited by SHQA by preventing the degradation of inhibitor κB-α (IκBα). NF-κB activation was also downregulated by the inhibition of Akt phosphorylation in LPS-stimulated cells. Furthermore, SHQA induced the expression of heme oxygenase 1 via Nrf2 activation. These results indicated that SHQA inhibited LPS-induced expressions of inflammatory mediators via suppressing the Akt-mediated NF-κB pathway as well as upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Our findings suggest that SHQA might be a potential therapeutic agent in various inflammatory diseases.

Inspired by the proposed inner-sphere mechanism of the tungstoenzyme acetylene hydratase, we have designed tungsten acetylene complexes and investigated their reactivity. Here, we report the first intermolecular nucleophilic attack on a tungsten-bound acetylene (C2H2) in bioinspired complexes employing 6-methylpyridine-2-thiolate ligands. By using PMe3 as a nucleophile, we isolated cationic carbyne and alkenyl complexes.

The marine-derived fungus Stilbella fimetaria is a chemically talented fungus producing several classes of bioactive metabolites, including meroterpenoids of the ascochlorin family. The targeted dereplication of fungal extracts by UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS revealed the presence of several new along with multiple known ascochlorin analogues (19-22). Their structures and relative configuration were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR. Further targeted dereplication based on a novel 1,4-benzoquinone sesquiterpene derivative, fimetarin A (22), resulted in the identification of three additional fimetarin analogues, fimetarins B-D (23-25), with their tentative structures proposed from detailed MS/HRMS analysis. In total, four new and eight known ascochlorin/fimetarin analogues were tested for their antimicrobial activity, identifying the analogues with a 5-chloroorcylaldehyde moiety to be more active than the benzoquinone analogue. Additionally, the presence of two conjugated double bonds at C-2'/C-3' and C-4'/C-5' were found to be essential for the observed antifungal activity, whereas the single, untailored bonds at C-4'/C-5' and C-8'/C-9' were suggested to be necessary for the observed antibacterial activity.

Using antibiotics as feed additives have been successively banned worldwide from 1986; therefore, it is an urgent task to finding safe and effective alternatives. As natural products of plant origin, essential oils (EOs) are an outstanding option due to their reported bioactivity. In this research, ten EOs of Labiatae species were extracted by steam distillation and its chemical constituents were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 123 chemical compounds, including alkenes, phenols, aldehydes and ketones, were identified. The results of antioxidant activity carried out through DPPH free radical scavenging (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), showing that EOs of Ocimum basilicum Linn. (ObEO), Thymus mongolicus Ronn. (TmEO), Origanum vulgare Linn. (OvEO) and Mosla chinensis Maxim. (McEO) have strong antioxidant activities. Their 50%-inhibitory concentration (IC50) value was <1.00, 1.42, 1.47 and 1.92 µg/mL, respectively; and their FRAP value was 1536.67 ± 24.22, 271.84 ± 4.93, 633.71 ± 13.14 and 480.66 ± 29.90, respectively. The results of filter paper diffusion showing that McEO, OvEO and TmEO inhibition zone diameter (IZD) are all over 30 mm. The results of two-fold dilution method showed that McEO, OvEO and TmEO have strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and their minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) value was 1 µL/mL, 2 µL/mL, and 2 µL/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the results in this work demonstrate the possibility for development and application of EOs as potential feed additives.

On-line coupled high performance liquid chromatography-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (HPLC-GC-FID) used for determining mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) in foods, particularly in certain oils and fats, may be disturbed by interfering olefins present as natural food components or resulting from raffination of the oils and fats. While some interference can be coped with by disregarding their peaks, others overload GC to the extent of obscuring the MOAH or form humps which need to be distinguished from the hump formed by the MOAH. In the latter cases, it is necessary to remove these interferences prior to HPLC-GC analysis. So far, epoxidation of the olefins to increase their retention time beyond that of the MOAH in HPLC is the best method available, though imperfect by causing some loss of MOAH and sometimes incomplete removal of the interference. Two methods are re-evaluated; preference is given to a slightly modified version of that proposed by Nestola and Schmidt. The performances are comparable: the losses of MOAH are similar and with both methods not all interfering olefins may be removed from refined edible oils. However, the Nestola/Schmidt method has practical advantages, the main ones being that no cooling is necessary and no solvent needs to be evaporated, which facilitates automation. Potential residual interferences must be recognized and subtracted, which can be by the characteristics of the hump they form in HPLC-GC-FID, by GCxGC-FID or by GCxGC-MS using characteristic mass fragments.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a highly disabling condition and has been linked to increased inflammatory mediators. Hydroalcoholic extract from barks of Rapanea ferruginea (HEBRF) and the majoritary compounds-myrsinoic acid A (MAA) and B (MAB)-have been studied due to their anti-inflammatory potential, but there is no evidence about its antidepressant-like effects. This research investigated the HEBRF, MAA, and MAB antidepressant-like effect, besides the involvement of the monoaminergic system and MAO-A activity in the HEBRF antidepressant-like effect. HEBRF (50-300 mg/kg, p.o.), MAA (5-30 mg/kg, p.o.) or MAB (3-60 mg/kg, p.o.) were administrated to mice, and behavioral parameters were assessed using the tail suspension test (TST), splash test (ST) and open field test (OFT). The involvement of monoaminergic system in the HEBRF antidepressant-like effect was established through the pretreatment of mice with antagonists. The influence triggered by HEBRF in the monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) activity was evaluated in the hippocampus (HIP) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) of mice. HEBRF (100-300 mg/kg) promoted antidepressant-like effect in the TST and augmented the total time of grooming in the ST, without compromising the locomotor activity. Pretreatment of mice with serotoninergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic antagonists, reversed the HEBRF antidepressant-like effect. Besides, HEBRF inhibited the MAO-A activity in the HIP and PFC. Moreover, MAA (5 mg/kg) and MAB (3 mg/kg) also promoted antidepressant-like and anti-anhedonic effects in mice. Data showed that monoaminergic system is involved in the HEBRF antidepressant-like effect, besides MAA and MAB possibly could be responsible for these pharmacological effects.

Terpenoids play vital roles in tea aroma quality and plants defense performance determination, whereas the scenarios of genes to metabolites of terpenes pathway remain uninvestigated in tea plants. Here, we report the use of an integrated approach combining metabolites, target gene transcripts and function analyses to reveal a gene-to-terpene network in tea plants. Forty-one terpenes including 26 monoterpenes, 14 sesquiterpenes and one triterpene were detected and 82 terpenes related genes were identified from five tissues of tea plants. Pearson correlation analysis resulted in genes to metabolites network. One terpene synthases whose expression positively correlated with farnesene were selected and its function was confirmed involved in the biosynthesis of α-farnesene, ß-ocimene and ß-farnesene, a very important and conserved alarm pheromone in response to aphids by both in vitro enzymatic assay in planta function analysis. In summary, we provided the first reliable gene-to-terpene network for novel genes discovery.

In this work, the suitability of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the multi-class determination of different families of neutral per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), such as fluorotelomer olefins (FTOs), alcohols (FTOHs) and fluorooctanesulfonamides (FOSAs) and sulfonamido-ethanols (FOSEs), was investigated and compared. Regarding GC-MS, the use of a semi-polar GC column (DB-624, 6%-cyanopropilphenyl 94%-dimethyl polysiloxane) allowed the adequate separation of all the compounds while chemical ionisation (CI) of positive ions as ionisation technique provided the best responses. Concerning UHPLC-MS/MS, atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) and photoionisation (APPI) sources allowed the ionisation of all studied neutral PFASs, including FTOs for the first time. High vaporizer temperatures (450 °C) and acetonitrile/water mobile phase mixtures were required to favour the ionisation of FTOs, with adequate ionisation for FTOHs, FOSAs and FOSEs. The chromatographic separation, performed on a totally porous column (Luna C18), allowed the successful separation of the four families of neutral PFASs. After comparing the performance of the studied methods, the highest detectability was achieved using UHPLC-APCI-MS/MS and it was chosen in combination with a solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure for the analysis of neutral PFASs in water samples. The whole method provided low limits of detection (0.003-6 µg L-1), good precision (RSD < 9%) and trueness (relative error < 10%). The methodology was applied to the analysis of river water samples and the presence of some neutral PFASs were detected (8:2 FTO) and quantified (4:2 FTOH and N-EtFOSA) at low concentration levels (ng L-1).

A previous study showed that the meroterpenoid-rich fraction of an ethanolic extract of Sargassum serratifolium (MES) stimulated adipose tissue browning and inhibited diet-induced obesity and metabolic syndrome. Sargaquinoic acid (SQA) is a major component in MES. We investigated the effects of SQA on the differentiation of preadipocytes to the beige adipocytes. SQA was treated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes differentiated under a special condition that has been reported to induce the browning of adipocytes. SQA at 10 µM reduced lipid accumulation by approximately 23%. SQA at 2.5 - 10 µM induced the differentiation of white adipocytes to beige adipocytes partially by increasing the mitochondrial density and the expression of beige/brown adipocyte markers. In addition, SQA activated lipid catabolic pathways, evidenced by the increased expression levels of perilipin, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1, and acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 1. As a partial mechanism, biochemical and in silico analyses indicate that SQA activated AMP-activated protein kinase signaling in adipocytes.

Separation of hydrocarbon mixtures into single components is a very important industrial process because all represent very important energy resources/raw chemicals in the petrochemical industry. The well-established industrial separation technology highly relies on the energy-intensive cryogenic distillation processes. The discovery of new materials capable of separating hydrocarbon mixtures by adsorbent-based separation technologies has the potential to provide more energy-efficient industrial processes with remarkable energy savings. Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers, represent a new class of porous materials that offer tremendous promise for hydrocarbon separations because of their easy tunability, designability, and functionality. A number of MOFs have been designed and synthesized to show excellent separation performance on various hydrocarbon separations. Here, we summarize and highlight some recent significant advances in the development of microporous MOFs for hydrocarbon separation applications.

Most C4 hydrocarbons are obtained as byproducts of ethylene production or oil refining, and complex and energy-intensive separation schemes are required for their isolation. Substantial industrial and academic effort has been expended to develop more cost-effective adsorbent- or membrane-based approaches to purify commodity chemicals such as 1,3-butadiene, isobutene, and 1-butene, but the very similar physical properties of these C4 hydrocarbons make this a challenging task. Here, we examine the adsorption behavior of 1-butene, cis-2-butene, and trans-2-butene in the metal-organic frameworks M2(dobdc) (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and M2(m-dobdc) (m-dobdc4- = 4,6-dioxidobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate), which all contain a high density of coordinatively unsaturated M2+ sites. We find that both Co2(m-dobdc) and Ni2(m-dobdc) are able to separate 1-butene from the 2-butene isomers, a critical industrial process that relies largely on energetically demanding cryogenic distillation. The origin of 1-butene selectivity is traced to the high charge density retained by the M2+ metal centers exposed within the M2(m-dobdc) structures, which results in a reversal of the cis-2-butene selectivity typically observed at framework open metal sites. Selectivity for 1-butene adsorption under multicomponent conditions is demonstrated for Ni2(m-dobdc) in both the gaseous and the liquid phases via breakthrough and batch adsorption experiments.

In this study, a novel thermo stable biosurfactants, 1-Pentanonacontene (C95H190) a fatty alkene and 3-Hydroxy-16-methylheptadecanoic acid (C18H36O3) were isolated from a marine isolate SGD-AC-13. Biosurfactants were produced using 1% yeast extract in tap water as production medium at 24 h in flask and 12 h in bioreactor. Using 16S rRNA gene sequence (1515 bp) and BCL card (bioMérieux VITEK®), strain was identified as Bacillus sp. Crude biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of distilled water to 31.32 ±â€¯0.93 mN/m with CMC value of 0.3 mg/ml. Cell free supernatant showed excellent emulsification and oil displacement activity with stability up to 160 °C, pH 6-12 and 50 g/L NaCl conc. Biosurfactants were characterized using FTIR, TLC, HPLC LC-MS and NMR spectroscopy. Cell free supernatant reduced the contact angle of distilled water droplet from 117° to 52.28° and of 2% pesticide from 78.77° to 73.42° while 750 µg/ml of crude biosurfactant reduced from 66.06° to 56.33° for 2% pesticide and recovered 35% ULO and 12% HWCO from the contaminated sand. To our best of knowledge, this is the first report of thermo stable fatty alkene as a biosurfactant and is structurally different from previously reported, with having potential application in agriculture, oil recovery and bioremediation.

Natural products have moved into the spotlight as possible sources for new drugs in the treatment of helminth infections including schistosomiasis. Surprisingly, insect-derived compounds have largely been neglected so far in the search for novel anthelminthics, despite the generally recognized high potential of insect biotechnology for drug discovery. This motivated us to assess the antischistosomal capacity of harmonine, an antimicrobial alkaloid from the harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis that raised high interest in insect biotechnology in recent years. We observed remarkably pleiotropic effects of harmonine on physiological, cellular, and molecular processes in adult male and female Schistosoma mansoni at concentrations as low as 5 µM in vitro. This included tegumental damage, gut dilatation, dysplasia of gonads, a complete stop of egg production at 10 µM, and increased production of abnormally shaped eggs at 5 µM. Motility was reduced with an EC50 of 8.8 µM and lethal effects occurred at 10-20 µM within 3 days of culture. Enzyme inhibition assays revealed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as one potential target of harmonine. To assess possible effects on stem cells, which represent attractive anthelminthic targets, we developed a novel in silico 3D reconstruction of gonads based on confocal laser scanning microscopy of worms after EdU incorporation to allow for quantification of proliferating stem cells per organ. Harmonine significantly reduced the number of proliferating stem cells in testes, ovaries, and also the number of proliferating parenchymal neoblasts. This was further supported by a downregulated expression of the stem cell markers nanos-1 and nanos-2 in harmonine-treated worms revealed by quantitative real-time PCR. Our data demonstrate a multifaceted antischistosomal activity of the lady beetle-derived compound harmonine, and suggest AChE and stem cell genes as possible targets. Harmonine is the first animal-derived alkaloid detected to have antischistosomal capacity. This study highlights the potential of exploiting insects as a source for the discovery of anthelminthics.

Amblyomma sculptum is a tick affecting animal and human health across Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil. Donkeys, Equus asinus, are known to be resistant to A. sculptum, suggesting that they can produce non-host tick semiochemicals (allomones), as already demonstrated for some other vertebrate host/pest interactions, whereas horses, Equus caballus, are considered as susceptible hosts. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that donkeys produce natural repellents against A. sculptum, by collecting sebum from donkeys and horses, collecting the odour from sebum extracts, and identifying donkey-specific volatile compounds by gas chromatography (GC) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). From the complex collected blends, five main compounds were identified in both species. Hexanal, heptanal and (E)-2-decenal were found predominantly in donkey extracts, whilst ethyl octanoate and ethyl decanoate were found predominantly in horse extracts. One compound, (E)-2-octenal, was detected exclusively in donkey extracts. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays 36 different A. sculptum nymphs were tested for each extract, compound and concentration. The dry sebum extracts and the compounds identified in both species induced neither attraction nor repellency. Only (E)-2-octenal, the donkey-specific compound, displayed repellency, with more nymphs preferring the arm containing the solvent control when the compound was presented in the test arm across four concentrations tested (p < 0.05, Chi-square test). A combination of a tick attractant (ammonia) and (E)-2-octenal at 0.25 M also resulted in preference for the control arm (p < 0.05, Chi-square test). The use of semiochemicals (allomones) identified from less-preferred hosts in tick management has been successful for repelling brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato from dog hosts. These results indicate that (E)-2-octenal could be used similarly to interfere in tick host location and be developed for use in reducing A. sculptum numbers on animal and human hosts.

Radix Salviae Miltiorrhiae (also known as DanShen (DS) in China), a popular herbal drug in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation and treating blood stasis, has been reported to possess potential anti-tumor effects. The aim of the study was to develop an effective and practical method for screening and identifying bioactive compounds from Radix Salviae Miltiorrhiae. In this work, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and fibroblast growth factor receptors 4 (FGFR4) dual-mixed/cell membrane chromatography (CMC) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ion trap-time of flight-multistage mass spectrum (HPLC-ESI-IT-TOF-MSn) was established and successfully used to identify the active components from Radix Salviae Miltiorrhiae. Salvianolic acid C (SAC), tanshinone I (Tan-I), tanshinone IIA (Tan-IIA), and cryptotanshinone (C-Tan) were identified as bioactive components with EGFR and FGFR4 activities. MTT and kinase assay were performed to investigate inhibitory effects of these compounds against EGFR and FGFR4 cells growth in vitro. Both cell viability and kinase activity showed that cryptotanshinone acting on EGFR receptor and tanshinone IIA acting on FGFR4 receptor. In conclusion, the EGFR & FGFR4 dual-mixed/CMC can simultaneously screen the bioactive components from TCMs that act on both EGFR and FGFR4 receptors, which significantly improve the efficiency of specific bioactive components identification from a complex system.

Fusarium solani H915 is a fungus derived from mangrove sediments. From its ethyl acetate extract, a new alkenoic acid, fusaridioic acid A (1), three new bis-alkenoic acid esters, namely, fusariumester A1 (2), A2 (3) and B (4), together with three known compounds (5⁻7), were isolated. The structures of the new compounds were comprehensively characterized by high resolution electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS), 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Additionally, the antifungal activities against tea pathogenic fungi Pestalotiopsis theae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were studied. The new compound, 4, containing a ß-lactone ring, exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against P. theae, with an MIC of 50 µg/disc. Hymeglusin (6), a typical ß-lactone antibiotic and a terpenoid alkaloid, equisetin (7), exhibited potent inhibitory activities against both fungal species. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their effects on zebrafish embryo development. Equisetin clearly imparted toxic effect on zebrafish even at low concentrations. However, none of the alkenoic acid derivatives exhibited significant toxicity to zebrafish eggs, embryos, or larvae. Thus, the ß-lactone containing alkenoic acid derivatives from F. solani H915 are low in toxicity and are potent antifungal agents against tea pathogenic fungi.

Δ5-Olefinic acids have been characterized in gymnosperm plants and have been reported to have several biological health benefits. Δ5-Olefinic acids from pine nut oil were effectively concentrated by repeated lipase-catalyzed esterification. The pine nut oil contained three major Δ5-olefinic acids, namely taxoleic acid (C18:2 Δ5,9), pinolenic acid (C18:3 Δ5,9,12), and sciadonic acid (C20:3 Δ5,11,14). The fatty acids present in pine nut oil were selectively esterified with ethanol using Lipozyme RM IM from Rhizomucor miehei as a biocatalyst. The Δ5-olefinic acids were concentrated in the unesterified fatty acid fraction. The optimum molar ratio of the substrates (fatty acid:ethanol), temperature, the enzyme loading, and the reaction time were 1:7, 25°C, 5% of total substrate weight, and 6 h, respectively. There was no significant effect in the concentration of Δ5-olefinic acids when water was added in the reaction mixture. The same protocol and optimum conditions were employed for two times repeated lipase-catalyzed esterifications. In first lipase-catalyzed esterification, the Δ5-olefinic acids content in the pine nut oil increased from 17 mol% to 51 mol% with a yield of 40 mol%. In a second lipase-catalyzed esterification, with the Δ5-olefinic acids-concentrated fatty acids obtained from the first reaction as the substrate, the Δ5-olefinic acids content increased to 86 mol% with a yield of 15 mol%. Finally, a maximum Δ5-olefinic acids content of ca. 96 mol% with a yield of 6 mol% was obtained via a third lipase-catalyzed esterification.

Coriander foliage is a distinctive spice employed on a daily basis in curry and other Indian traditional food preparations mainly for the unique flavour attributes and health benefits. Radical scavenging activity has been demonstrated previously for coriander foliage. However, specific molecules responsible were not identified. A new molecule was isolated via chromatographic technique, and its structure was established by employing multinuclei and multidimensional NMR and HRMS techniques. The identified molecule Heneicos-1-ene was also screened for radical scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity, wherein it displayed radical scavenging activity of 89.6 ± 0.62% at 200 ppm, and also exhibited substantial antimicrobial activity against E. coli and Salmonella typhi.
