We used solid phase indirect hemadsorption assay (SPIHA) to detect specific IgM antibodies in specimens from cerebrospinal fluid, pleural fluid and ascitic fluid in patients with tuberculosis and compared with the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA). The result showed that detection of tuberculous specific IgM antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid by SPIHA is important for diagnosing the tuberculous meningitis.

We present the clinical case of a 17-year-old male who developed an ascitic syndrome 11 years after the establishment of a ventricular-peritoneal shunt as the consequence of a malformation hydrocephalus. We discuss the pathogenic mechanism and present histopathological evidence that justifies the accumulation of spinal fluid in the peritoneal cavity. We insist on the convenience of keeping in mind this clinical situation in order to avoid unnecessary complementary exams and we analyze the most adequate therapeutic schedule.

An unusual case of ascites secondary to a ventriculoperitoneal shunt is presented. The ascites did not redevelop following diversion of the distal catheter into the right atrium, and no adequate explantation was found as to why the cerebrospinal fluid was not absorbed by the peritoneum.
