Many persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are suspected endocrine disruptors and it is important to investigate their effects at low concentrations relevant to human exposure. Here, the OECD test guideline #456 steroidogenesis assay was downscaled to a 96-well microplate format to screen 24 POPs for their effects on viability, and testosterone and estradiol synthesis using the human adrenocortical cell line H295R. The compounds (six polyfluoroalkyl substances, five organochlorine pesticides, ten polychlorinated biphenyls and three polybrominated diphenyl ethers) were tested at human-relevant levels (1 nM to 10 µM). Increased estradiol synthesis, above the OECD guideline threshold of 1.5-fold solvent control, was shown after exposure to 10 µM PCB-156 (153%) and PCB-180 (196%). Interestingly, the base hormone synthesis varied depending on the cell batch. An alternative data analysis using a linear mixed-effects model that include multiple independent experiments and considers batch-dependent variation was therefore applied. This approach revealed small but statistically significant effects on estradiol or testosterone synthesis for 17 compounds. Increased testosterone levels were demonstrated even at 1 nM for PCB-74 (18%), PCB-99 (29%), PCB-118 (16%), PCB-138 (19%), PCB-180 (22%), and PBDE-153 (21%). The MTT assay revealed significant effects on cell viability after exposure to 1 nM of perfluoroundecanoic acid (12%), 3 nM PBDE-153 (9%), and 10 µM of PCB-156 (6%). This shows that some POPs can interfere with endocrine signaling at concentrations found in human blood, highlighting the need for further investigation into the toxicological mechanisms of POPs and their mixtures at low concentrations relevant to human exposure.

Harbors on all coasts regularly silt up, receiving sedimentary inputs that progressively reduce the water depths available for navigation. Consequently, they are routinely dredged to guarantee the depths necessary for navigation. Sediments act as a reservoir for anthropogenic contaminants such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that enter the aquatic system associated with particles or in solution. The objective of this study is to assess the state of pollution by POPs and heavy metals such as copper and zinc, used in large quantities in antifouling paints, in the sediments of the port of Oran. These were characterized by different methods: size, XRD, calcination, FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, and AAS, in order to determine their main characteristics and heavy metals and POPs content. The particle size is determined by laser particle size distribution. Thus, sediments from Oran port are composed of means and end sands, silt, and clay. The XRD analysis shows that the sediments consist mainly of silicates and calcite. The organic matter was determined by ignition loss at 450 and 550 °C; it is about 7%. Analysis by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, and GC-MS of POPs excerpts shows that the sediments are highly polluted by aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (3372 mg/kg). Finally, metals were determined by AAS method. The results show significant pollution of Zn (313.5 mg/kg) and moderate pollution by Cu (75.6 mg/kg).

Short-, medium-, and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (CPs) (SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs) and dechloranes are chemicals of emerging concern; however, little is known of their bioaccumulative potential compared to legacy contaminants in marine mammals. Here, we analyzed SCCPs, MCCPs, LCCPs, 7 dechloranes, 4 emerging brominated flame retardants, and 64 legacy contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in the blubber of 46 individual marine mammals, representing 10 species, from Norway. Dietary niche was modeled based on stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon in the skin/muscle to assess the contaminant accumulation in relation to diet. SCCPs and dechlorane-602 were strongly positively correlated with legacy contaminants and highest in killer (Orcinus orca) and sperm (Physeter macrocephalus) whales (median SCCPs: 160 ng/g lw; 230 ng/g lw and median dechlorane-602: 3.8 ng/g lw; 2.0 ng/g lw, respectively). In contrast, MCCPs and LCCPs were only weakly correlated to recalcitrant legacy contaminants and were highest in common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; median MCCPs: 480 ng/g lw and LCCPs: 240 ng/g lw). The total contaminant load in all species was dominated by PCBs and legacy chlorinated pesticides (63-98%), and MCCPs dominated the total CP load (42-68%, except 11% in the long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas). Surprisingly, we found no relation between contaminant concentrations and dietary niche, suggesting that other large species differences may be masking effects of diet such as lifespan or biotransformation and elimination capacities. CP and dechlorane concentrations were higher than in other marine mammals from the (sub)Arctic, and they were present in a killer whale neonate, indicating bioaccumulative properties and a potential for maternal transfer in these predominantly unregulated chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and disruptions in the gastrointestinal microbiota have been positively correlated with a predisposition to factors such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes; however, it is unclear how the microbiome contributes to this relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between early life exposure to a potent aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonist and persistent disruptions in the microbiota, leading to impaired metabolic homeostasis later in life. METHODS: This study used metagenomics, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)- and mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics, and biochemical assays to analyze the gut microbiome composition and function, as well as the physiological and metabolic effects of early life exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF) in conventional, germ-free (GF), and Ahr-null mice. The impact of TCDF on Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) in vitro was assessed using optical density (OD 600), flow cytometry, transcriptomics, and MS-based metabolomics. RESULTS: TCDF-exposed mice exhibited lower abundances of A. muciniphila, lower levels of cecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and indole-3-lactic acid (ILA), as well as lower levels of the gut hormones glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY), findings suggestive of disruption in the gut microbiome community structure and function. Importantly, microbial and metabolic phenotypes associated with early life POP exposure were transferable to GF recipients in the absence of POP carry-over. In addition, AHR-independent interactions between POPs and the microbiota were observed, and they were significantly associated with growth, physiology, gene expression, and metabolic activity outcomes of A. muciniphila, supporting suppressed activity along the ILA pathway. CONCLUSIONS: These data obtained in a mouse model point to the complex effects of POPs on the host and microbiota, providing strong evidence that early life, short-term, and self-limiting POP exposure can adversely impact the microbiome, with effects persisting into later life with associated health implications. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP13356.

Plastics are invading nearly all ecosystems on earth, acting as emerging repositories for toxic organic pollutants and thereby imposing substantial threats to ecological integrity. The colonization of plastics by microorganisms, forming the plastisphere, has garnered attention due to its potential influence on biogeochemical cycles. However, the capability of plastisphere microorganisms to attenuate organohalide pollutants remains to be evaluated. This study revealed that the plastisphere, collected from coastal ecosystems, harbors unique microbiomes, while the natural accumulation of organohalide pollutants on plastics may favor the proliferation of organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). Laboratory tests further elucidated the high potential of plastisphere microbiota to reductively dehalogenate a variety of organohalide pollutants. Notably, over 70% tested plastisphere completely debrominated tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to nonhalogenated products, whereas polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were converted to lower congeners under anaerobic conditions. Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas, and novel Dehalococcoidia populations might contribute to the observed dehalogenation based on their growth during incubation and positive correlations with the quantity of halogens removed. Intriguingly, large fractions of these OHRB populations were identified in a lack of the currently known TBBPA/PBDEs/PCBs reductive dehalogenase (RDase) genes, suggesting the presence of novel RDase genes. Microbial community analyses identified organohalides as a crucial factor in determining the composition, diversity, interaction, and assembly of microbes derived from the plastisphere. Collectively, this study underscores the overlooked roles of the plastisphere in the natural attenuation of persistent organohalide pollutants and sheds light on the unignorable impacts of organohalide compounds on the microbial ecology of the plastisphere.

Introduction: Obesity is a pathological state that involves the dysregulation of different metabolic pathways and adipose tissue cells, constituting a risk factor for the development of other diseases. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment. The study of the behavior of pollutants in situations of extreme weight loss can provide biomonitoring information and tools to manage diseases of environmental etiology. Aim: To determine the prevalence of serum persistent and non-persistent pollutants in obese patients subjected to bariatric surgery and analyze the impact of sociodemographic variables on these changes. Methods: GC-MS/MS and UHPLC-MS/MS were utilized to determine the detection rates and concentrations of 353 compounds, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and rodenticide, in serum samples of 59 obese patients before and after undergoing bariatric surgery. Results: Detection rates of p,p'-DDE, HCB, ß-HCH, naphthalene, phenanthrene and PCB congeners 138, 153 and 180 significantly increased due to surgery-induced weight loss. Serum levels of p,p'-DDE, PCB-138, PCB-153 and PCB-180 also increased after surgery. Correlations between naphthalene levels, weight loss, variation of total lipids and time after surgery were found. Additionally, correlations were observed between concentrations of PCB-138 and weight loss, and between phenanthrene levels and reduction of total lipids. No statistically significant differences were observed for other groups of contaminants, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals included in the quantification methods. Conclusions: Increment of POPs was observed after bariatric surgery. Serum concentrations of POPs after surgery were influenced by adiposity-related variables. Although biomonitoring studies show a decreasing tendency of exposure, rapid weight loss leads to an increase of circulating POPs. Further research on the interplay between adipose tissue, POPs and peripheral organs is required.

Persistent organic pollutants may negatively impact cognition; however, associations between persistent organic pollutants and changes in cognition among United States Hispanic/Latino adults have not been investigated. Herein, we examined the associations between 33 persistent organic pollutants and cognitive changes among 1837 Hispanic/Latino adults. At baseline (2008-2011; Visit 1), participants provided biospecimens in which we measured levels of 5 persistent pesticides or pesticide metabolites, 4 polybrominated diphenyl ethers and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl, and 24 polychlorinated biphenyls. At Visit 1 and again at Visit 2 (2015-2018), a battery of neurocognitive tests was administered which included the Brief-Spanish English Verbal Learning Test, Word Fluency Test, and Digit Symbol Substitution Test. To estimate the adjusted associations between changes in cognition and each POP, we used linear regression for survey data. Each doubling in plasma levels of polychlorinated biphenyls 146, 178, 194, 199/206, and 209 was associated with steeper declines in global cognition (ßs range:-0.053 to -0.061) with stronger associations for the Brief-Spanish English Verbal Learning Test. Persistent organic pollutants, in particular polychlorinated biphenyls, were associated with declines in cognition over 7 years and may be a concern for Hispanic/Latino adults.

Studies on the occurrence of POPs and other persistent compounds in pristine areas are extremely valuable, as they offer insights on the long-range transportation of POPs and the occurrence of natural compound producers' areas. In this regard, this study aimed to report data of both anthropogenic (polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and natural (methoxylated PBDEs, MeO-BDEs) compounds in tissues of the black triggerfish, Melichthys niger (Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae), specimens (n = 30) sampled in 2018 during a scientific expedition conducted at Trindade Island. The study assessed persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Caretta caretta turtles along Turkish coasts, analyzing bioaccumulation in accessible organs and discerning sex-related differences. Ten adult turtles (5 males, 5 females) from Mugla province were sampled post-mortem. Various tissues were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. DDT distribution showed no sex-based difference, with concentrations highest in fat tissue followed by liver, kidney, muscle, spleen, and heart. Male PCB concentrations ranked highest in fat, followed by kidney, liver, spleen, muscle, and heart, while females showed a similar trend. PAH concentrations were highest in fat for both sexes, followed by various organs. Limited PBDE concentrations hindered comprehensive evaluation. Overall, C. caretta act as effective bioindicators for monitoring environmental pollution, with certain POPs exhibiting sex and organ-based variations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Many synthetic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are ubiquitous in the environment and highly detected among pregnant people. These chemicals may disrupt maternal and/or fetal sex steroid hormones, which are critical to pregnancy maintenance and fetal development. Here, we review the epidemiological literature examining prenatal exposure to common synthetic EDCs in relation to maternal and fetal sex steroid hormones. RECENT FINDINGS: We performed a literature search using PubMed, SCOPUS, and Embase, ultimately identifying 29 articles for full review. Phenols, parabens, and persistent organic pollutants generally showed inverse associations with androgens, estrogens, and progesterone. Phthalates and per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances tended to be inversely associated with progesterone, while evidence regarding androgens and estrogens was mixed. Inconsistent, but noteworthy, differences by fetal sex and timing of exposure/outcome were observed. Overall, the literature suggests EDCs may disrupt maternal and fetal sex steroid activity, though findings are mixed. Given the pervasive, high-volume production of these synthetic chemicals and the critical functions sex steroid hormones play during gestation, additional research is warranted.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence suggests neurotoxicity of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during sensitive periods of development. We present an overview of pediatric population neuroimaging studies that examined brain influences of EDC exposure during prenatal period and childhood. RECENT FINDINGS: We found 46 studies that used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine brain influences of EDCs. These studies showed associations of prenatal exposure to phthalates, organophosphate pesticides (OPs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons and persistent organic pollutants with global and regional brain structural alterations. Few studies suggested alteration in functional MRI associated with prenatal OP exposure. However, studies on other groups of EDCs, such as bisphenols, and those that examined childhood exposure were less conclusive. These findings underscore the potential profound and lasting effects of prenatal EDC exposure on brain development, emphasizing the need for better regulation and strategies to reduce exposure and mitigate impacts. More studies are needed to examine the influence of postnatal exposure to EDC on brain imaging.

Comprehensive studies simultaneously investigating the occurrence of chemicals of concern are limited. In this study, sediments and bivalves were collected from 24 locations along the Korean coast to evaluate the relative distribution, contamination characteristics, and ecological risks of legacy/emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Our findings reveal that the concentrations of these contaminants were comparable to or lower than historical levels in the same Korean coast and other Asian countries. Notably, PAHs exhibited the highest distribution in sediments (84 %), whereas short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were dominant in bivalves (91 %). This study highlighted significant correlations in the sediment levels of each legacy pollutants, suggesting similar sources and geochemical behaviors. However, SCCPs displayed unique contamination patterns. Ecologically, PAHs and SCCPs presented low risks in sediments compared to Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines, however 100 % and 33 % of bivalves, respectively, exceeded US EPA/Canadian Fish Tissue Guidelines.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) have the characteristics of resistance to environmental degradation, bioaccumulation and long-distance migration potential. Maternal exposure to POPs during pregnancy can enter the fetal blood circulation through the placental barrier, and have a potential impact on the functional development of the nervous system of the offspring. This in turn leads to the occurrence and development of neurological defects and diseases in adulthood. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the effects of exposure to three major POPs (organochlorine compounds, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) during pregnancy on the functional development of the nervous system (social emotions, cognition, language, exercise, and adaptability) in children, and to provide reference for subsequent studies.

OBJECTIVE: Strong experimental evidence exists that several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have neurobehavioral toxicity. However, evidence of associations between prenatal exposure and child's cognitive development is inconsistent. Moreover, toxicants are generally analyzed one by one without considering aggregate effects. We examined here the impact of a prenatal exposure to a mixture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on intellectual abilities in preschool children, and compared their effects to those described in the literature. METHODS: Sixty-two children were included in a longitudinal cohort. Four organochlorine pesticides, four polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and seven perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were measured in cord blood. Intellectual abilities were assessed at 6 years of age using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence 4th ed. (WPPSI-IV). We examined the associations between a mixture of POPs and cognitive performances using principal components approach (PCA) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression taking sex difference into account. RESULTS: No negative correlation was found when analyses were performed on boys and girls together. In sex-stratified analyses, lower scores in full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and fluid reasoning index (FRI) were observed in boys most exposed to a mixture of POPs. Increase of the WQS index was also associated with lower verbal comprehension index (VCI) scores in girls only. No other negative correlation was found using both WQS and PCA models. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests deleterious associations between antenatal exposure to a mixture of POPs and sex-specific cognitive level, clarifying some trends described in the literature.

The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (RS-MPA) hosts endemic species that have to cope with multiple threats, including chemical contamination. Adèlie penguin is considered a good sentinel species for monitoring pollutants. Here, 23 unhatched eggs, collected from three colonies along the Ross Sea coasts, were analysed to provide updated results on legacy pollutants and establish a baseline for newer ones. Average sum of polychlorinated biphenyls (∑PCBs) at the three colonies ranged 20.9-24.3 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and included PCBs IUPAC nos. 28, 118, 153, 138, 180. PCBs were dominated by hexachlorinated congeners as previously reported. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) ranged between 134 and 166 and 181-228 ng/g lw, respectively. Overall, ∑PCBs was exceeded by pesticides, contrary to previous studies from the Ross Sea. Sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (∑PBDEs) ranged between 0.90 and 1.18 ng/g lw and consisted of BDE-47 (that prevailed as expected, representing 60-80 % of the ∑PBDEs) and BDE-85. Sum of perfluoroalkyl substances (∑PFAS) ranged from 1.04 to 1.53 ng/g wet weight and comprised five long-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA); perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) was also detected. The PFAS profile was dominated by PFCAs as already observed in Arctic seabirds. Mercury ranged from 0.07 to 0.15 mg/kg dry weight similarly to previous studies. Legacy pollutants confirmed their ongoing presence in Antarctic biota and their levels seemed mostly in line with the past, but with minor variations in some cases, likely due to continued input or release from past reservoirs. PFAS were reported for the first time in penguins from the Ross Sea, highlighting their ubiquity. Although further studies would be useful to increase the sample size and accordingly improve our knowledge on spatial and temporal trends, this study provides interesting data for future monitoring programs within the RS-MPA that will be crucial to test its effectiveness against human impacts.

BACKGROUND: Controversy surrounds the impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on fetal development. This study aimed to investigate levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in umbilical cord blood from Sanliurfa mothers in Turkey, exploring associations with gestational age and birth weight. METHODS: Participants included voluntary mothers pregnant with a single fetus, providing details on maternal factors. Cord blood samples were collected immediately after delivery. Samples were extracted with a modified QuEChERS method, and OCPs (17 pesticides) and PCBs (11 congeners) compound levels were analyzed with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry. Detection frequencies and levels of POPs by single pollutant type and pollutant groups were calculated and compared according to gestational duration and birth weight. We used partial least squares discriminant analysis to identify the key chemicals and distinguish their respective statuses. RESULTS: Among 120 infants, 35 were preterm but appropriate for gestational age, 35 were term but small for gestational age (SGA), and 50 were term and appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Beta HCH, Oxy-Chlordan, and PCB 28, were not detected in cord blood samples. Half of the samples contained at least 4 types of OCPs, with a median OCP level of 38.44 ng/g. Among the DDT, 2,4'-DDE was found at the highest concentration in cord plasma samples. The PCB congeners with a frequency exceeding 50% were ranked in the following order: 151, 149, 138, 146. The median level of ∑PCBs was 5.93 ng/g. Male infants born at term with SGA status exhibited lower levels of ∑DDTs, ∑OCPs compared to male infants born preterm or at term with AGA status. Di-ortho-substituted PCBs and hexachlorinated PCBs were higher in male infants born at term with SGA status than male infants born preterm with AGA status. CONCLUSION: Overall, exposure to DDT and PCBs demonstrates varying effects depending on gestational duration and birth weight, with exposure levels also differing by gender. This underscores the necessity for studies across diverse populations that investigate the combined effects of multiple pollutant exposures on gestational age, birth weight, and gender simultaneously.

Feathers are regarded as important nondestructive biomonitoring tools for bird pollutants. However, external contamination of feathers by different pollutants in different bird species remains unclear. In the present study, the feathers of 16 bird species, including terrestrial, freshwater, and marine birds, were analyzed for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Bird feathers from an abandoned e-waste recycling site had higher POP concentrations and were more correlated with the POP muscle concentrations than those from the less polluted areas. The significant and positive POP correlations between the feathers and muscles of different species indicate that feathers are a good indicator of inter-species and spatial pollution. For individual species, the most hydrophobic POPs in feathers, such as hepta- to deca-polybrominated diphenyl ethers, had higher proportions than in muscles and worse correlations with muscle POPs compared with other POPs. Results of the chemical mass balance (CMB) model revealed that the gaseous phase, internal pollution, and atmospheric particle phase were the main contributors to low-, medium-, and high-hydrophobicity POPs in feathers, respectively. Overall, this study provides a preliminary but meaningful framework for distinguishing between internal and external contamination in feathers and gives information concerning the fitness of feathers as POP indicators with specific physicochemical properties.

Bioretention systems prove effective in purifying common persistent organic pollutants (POPs) found in urban rainfall runoff. However, the response process of the microecosystem in the media becomes unclear when POPs accumulate in bioretention systems. In this study, we constructed bioretention systems and conducted simulated rainfall tests to elucidate the evolution of micro-ecosystems within the media under typical POPs pollution. The results showed all POPs in runoff were effectively removed by surface adsorption in different media, with load reduction rates of >85 % for PCBs and OCPs and > 80 % for PAHs. Bioretention soil media (BSM) + water treatment residuals (WTR) media exhibited greater stability in response to POPs contamination compared to BSM and pure soil (PS) media. POPs contamination significantly impacted the microecology of the media, reducing the number of microbial species by >52.6 % and reducing diversity by >27.6 % at the peak of their accumulation. Enzyme activities were significantly inhibited, with reductions ranging from 44.42 % to 60.33 %. Meanwhile, in terms of ecological functions, the metabolism of exogenous carbon sources significantly increased (p < 0.05), while nitrogen and sulfur cycling processes were suppressed. Microbial diversity and enzyme activities showed some recovery during the dissipation of POPs but did not reach the level observed before the experiment. Dominant bacterial species and abundance changed significantly during the experiment. Proteobacteria were suppressed, but remained the dominant phylum (all relative abundances >41 %). Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria adapted well to the contamination. Pseudomonas, a typical POPs-degrading bacterium, displayed a positive correlation between its relative abundance and POPs levels (mean > 10 %). Additionally, POPs and media properties, including TN and pH, are crucial factors that collectively shape the microbial community. This study provides new insights into the impacts of POPs contamination on the microbial community of the media, which can improve media design and operation efficiency.

In this study, we examined the persistent pollutant contents [harmful elements (HEs), cadmium (Cd, 0.1 mg/kg) âˆ¼ barium (Ba, 881.1 mg/kg)] and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs; Acenaphthylene (Acy), Acenaphthene (Ace), Fluorene (Flu), Benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) (0 mg/kg) âˆ¼ BaP (10.2 mg/kg)] in bus stop dust (BSD) from Qingyang, Northwest China. The Nemerow composite pollution index of the eight types of PAHs and ∑16PAHs indicated severe pollution. The carcinogenic risk of the persistent pollutant in BSD to adults was 1.6 times greater than the acceptable upper limit for the human body, while the noncarcinogenic risk was small to five daily bus passenger groups. Clustering and principal component analysis showed that 12 kinds of HEs were mainly derived from coal and fuel combustion and 16 kinds of PAHs were mainly derived from biomass combustion, organic matter decomposition, and chemical applications.
