RESUMEN

The application of the compact disk (CD) method for radon measurements at mines, caves and other workplaces needs testing under highly variable exposure conditions. We present the results from a blind comparison of CDs exposed in the Laboratory of Natural Radiation (Saelices el Chico, Spain). During the exposure the temperature varied from 6.5 to 24.9 °C (average 12.6 °C) and the 222Rn activity concentrations varied from <10 Bq m-3 to 147 kBq m-3. Good correspondence was observed between the integrated 222Rn activity concentration determined by the reference instruments in the laboratory (122,500 ± 6100 kBq h m-3) and that assessed by analysis of the CDs at a depth 80 µm beneath the front surface (118,000 ± 12,000 kBq h m-3) and at a depth of 120 µm (106,000 ± 12,000 kBq h m-3). The theoretical modeling of the CD response under variable temperature and radon concentration suggested that the small bias is probably due to the time variation of the calibration factor because of the time variations of the temperature.

RESUMEN

When trauma patients are transferred from outside hospitals, the receiving clinicians often consult their local radiologists for definitive interpretations of outside examinations (IOE). Such requests introduce a host of logistical, medicolegal, and financial concerns related to quality control and resource utilization. We surveyed 701 members of the American Society of Emergency Radiology to elucidate these concerns. We found that the majority of emergency departments still rely on compact disks for conveyance of outside images; hard film and network transfers were minor mechanisms for most respondents. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents indicated that radiologist reports accompany fewer than 25 % of all transferred imaging studies; of the reports that do arrive, most are unverified preliminary reads. There is considerable variability in billing practices and reimbursement patterns for radiologic second opinions; 68 % of the respondents do not know how often their IOEs are reimbursed. Suboptimal communication between community hospitals and referral centers may result in duplicated efforts and inconsistent quality of medical imaging studies. Further investigation into the role of radiology trainees in the handling of outside studies is also highly recommended.

RESUMEN

A mixed methods research design was used to investigate the effects of a music therapy CD (MTCD) creation intervention on pediatric oncology patients' distress and coping during their first radiation therapy treatment. The music therapy method involved children creating a music CD using interactive computer-based music software, which was "remixed" by the music therapist-researcher to extend the musical material. Eleven pediatric radiation therapy outpatients aged 6 to 13 years were randomly assigned to either an experimental group, in which they could create a music CD prior to their initial treatment to listen to during radiation therapy, or to a standard care group. Quantitative and qualitative analyses generated multiple perceptions from the pediatric patients, parents, radiation therapy staff, and music therapist-researcher. Ratings of distress during initial radiation therapy treatment were low for all children. The comparison between the two groups found that 67% of the children in the standard care group used social withdrawal as a coping strategy, compared to 0% of the children in the music therapy group; this trend approached significance (p = 0.076). MTCD creation was a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate intervention for pediatric patients, which offered a positive experience and aided their use of effective coping strategies to meet the demands of their initial radiation therapy treatment.

RESUMEN

The Theory of Planned Behavior was chosen as the framework, assuming that college students are rational decision makers seeking to maximize economic gains in purchasing compact discs. A questionnaire was given to 450 students from four college campuses in the Kaohsiung area of Taiwan. Analyses showed that the more positively rated the Behavioral Intention toward purchasing pirated music compact discs, the more likely the college students were to purchase them. Conversely, when Subjective Norms and Perceived Behavioral Control were higher, college students were less likely to make a purchase. Therefore, buying pirated compact discs was consistent with the premises for Attitude, Subjective Norms, and Behavioral Control.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To identify regional, organizational, and personal characteristics that predict awareness and adoption of a dietary curriculum training and CD among educators. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of educators (n=675) representing 48 states report program awareness and factors that influenced adoption. RESULTS: Among those surveyed, 354 educators were aware (52%) of the CD and 192 educators adopted it (54%). Adopters were nearly 8 times more likely to identify training time and nearly 7 times more likely to identify CD training method as influencing adoption. CONCLUSION: Although regional and organizational characteristics are predictors of awareness, these variables were less likely to predict adoption of such programs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: For more than 35 years, cine film has been used as the standard recording medium for coronary angiography. At present, the DICOM and the CD-R format have been established as the standard media for the transport of cardiac angiographic images in place of cine angiographic film. The aim of the study was to compare the media production costs between two cardiac catheterization laboratories, with and without cine film. METHODS: We collected data from two different laboratories in the same geographic area which perform about 1000 procedures/year, using a similar digital x-ray imaging system. In one lab, images are recorded on 35-mm film at 25 frames/sec. In the other one, the image support is based on a CD-R. For each laboratory we considered both direct patient and variable equipment costs. Direct patient costs in the film-lab include: cine film, processing chemicals, processing labor, chemical disposal, maintenance; in the digital lab: CD-R costs and masterization time. Equipment costs in the film-lab include: cine camera, cine film processor and cine projector; in the filmless lab a DICOM formatter and a review workstation. The equipment amortization costs are considered over a three-year period. RESULTS: Total direct patient costs are 90,000 lira for the film and 14,000 lira for the CD-R. Equipment costs are 193,000,000 lira in the film-lab and 150,000,000 lira in the filmless one. Overall cost per patient is 154,300 lira for the cine film and 64,000 lira for the CD-R. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the media costs per patient for a digital DICOM CD-R format system are substantially less than for 35-mm film, permitting savings of more than 90,000,000 Italian lira per year in a mid-volume cardiac catheterization laboratory.
