RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been an increased awareness of the role of the labial and lingual frenulae on a neonate's ability to latch and breastfeed efficiently. This critical review explores the (i) oral physiology of a baby nursing (ii) factors that can decrease a baby's ability to nurse efficiently, the problems these cause and their management and the (iii) relation between poor nursing efficacy and the risk of early childhood caries (ECC) Study design: An expansive search of the literature was performed using four electronic databases. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Most studies assessing the role of labial and lingual frenulae on breastfeeding were of a low quality. The relation between ECC and poor nursing efficacy was found to be largely speculative. Hence, the results of these studies should be interpreted with caution. Despite the limited quality and external validity of the current evidence, in cases where breastfeeding difficulties are identified, surgical management of labial or lingual frenulae may provide some subjective improvements in breastfeeding outcome.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the tongue rotation exercise training on the oral functions using the measurement of maximum tongue pressure (MTP) and labial closure strength (LCS) in normal adults. In experiment 1, the differences in MTP and LCS at the measurement point for both groups with and without tongue rotation exercise training were examined. We instructed subjects to perform the tongue rotation exercise for 2 months. We measured MTP and LCS at the point before training and at the points of 1 and 2 months after the beginning of training. In experiment 2, the changes of MTP and LCS based on the sex differences and the measurement points in training were examined. We instructed subjects to perform the tongue rotation exercise for 3 months, and measured MTP and LCS at the point before training and at the points of 2 weeks and 1, 2 and 3 months after the beginning of training. The results of experiment 1 showed MTP and LCS increased with the progress of continuous training. The results of experiment 2 showed MTP and LCS were always higher in men than in women and increased significantly at 2 weeks of training in both sexes (P < 0.01). These results might be suggested that the tongue rotation exercise training was effective for the recovery of the activity of the stomatognathic system.

1. The pretreatment relationship between a clinically "abnormal"-appearing maxillary midline frenum and a midline diastema showed a strong, but not absolute, correlation. A certain percentage of patients demonstrated (1) a diastema but not an "abnormal" frenum or (2) no diastema but an "abnormal" frenum. 2. Diastema cases in which there were "abnormal" pretreatment frenums demonstrated a decidedly stronger potential for relapse after orthodontic closure. The exceptions to the rule were explained by the clinician's inability to differentiate between "normal" and "abnormal" frenums and by the periodontium's apparent (if not consistent) ability to recognize the frenal and interdental tissues following orthodontic tooth movement. 3. A three-stage surgical procedure was shown to be very effective in alleviating the relapse phenomenon following orthodontic treatment of diastemas. The surgical procedures were successful in avoiding many of the hazards to the periodontium associated with previous techniques.

RESUMEN

Usually when reference is made to the Orbicularis oris muscle of the upper lip only the horizontal bands of muscle are mentioned. This muscle also comprises oblique fibres (Orbicularis externus) that are of very great importance in lip movements. The balance of the lip derives from the activity of the two types of muscle fibers. The lip can thus perform, at the same time, a movement of compression of the underlying structures and projection movements whereby these structures are freed. These different modes of action are well demonstrated by selective electromyography. There is also, in the middle of the upper lip, a medial cellulo-fibrous septum forming a prolongation of the septum and penetrating into the median interincisive suture and ending at the frenulum of the upper lip. This medial septum seems to play a very important physiological role in the growth of the premaxilla.

RESUMEN

The fluorescein angiographs of the attached gingiva of 10 out of 12 subjects showed distinct areas of ischaemia which were clinically not discernible when standardized tensions of 100 g or 200 g tensions were exerted on the mandibular frenum. The fluorescein angiographs were reproducible in 3 out of 4 cases and the ischaemic areas reached the adjacent gingival margins in 5 cases. Possible hypoxic damage of the periodontium by tension of frenum is discussed.

RESUMEN

Oppositely sexed pairs of gorillas exhibit some behavior indicative of higher cognitive functioning, such as individual partner preferences and varied copulatory positions, but also mate in a cyclic manner closely related to the degree of female genital swelling. The latter finding is contrary to predictions based on their advanced position in phylogeny.
