RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Developing nursing leadership has become a key policy priority to achieve universal health coverage. This study aims to explore the current status, developing trends and research frontiers in the field of nursing leadership. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: In total, 1,137 articles and reviews on nursing leadership from 1985 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Trends of publications, journals, countries/regions, institutions, documents and keywords were visualized and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and CiteSpace software. FINDINGS: Nursing leadership research showed an overall increase in number despite slight fluctuations in annual publications. The USA was the leading country in nursing leadership research, and the University of Alberta was the most productive institution. The Journal of Nursing Management was the most widely published journal that focused on nursing leadership, followed by the Journal of Nursing Administration. Keyword analysis showed that the main research hotspots of nursing leadership are improvement, practice and impact of nursing leadership. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This article summarizes the current state and frontiers of nursing leadership for researchers, managers and policy makers, as well as follow-up, development and implementation of nursing leadership. More research is needed that focuses on the improvement, practice and impact of nursing leadership, which are cyclical, complementary and mutually reinforcing. Longitudinal and intervention studies of nursing leadership, especially on patient prognosis, are also particularly needed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project was to describe nurse scientists' roles, functions, and work experiences in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). BACKGROUND: Nurse scientists play a critical role in shaping the culture of clinical inquiry and closing the gap between knowledge and practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was used to collect information on sociodemographics, workload, research, clinical practice, education, and time/effort. Data were examined using descriptive statistics and χ2 analyses. RESULTS: One hundred forty-four nurse scientists completed the survey. These nurse scientists serve dynamic and critical roles in conducting research, implementing evidence-based practice, and reforming policy. Research effort was limited due to workload and infrastructure constraints. Better research infrastructure was associated with higher research productivity and funding. CONCLUSIONS: This survey highlights the needs and challenges nurse scientists experience in conducting research and advancing VHA's mission. Given the national shortage of PhD-prepared nurses, long-term strategies are needed to attract, hire, and retain nurse scientists in healthcare systems.

RESUMEN

The objective of the study was to identify the main challenges in conducting research with immigrants and refugees and to provide seven methodological and pragmatic strategies. The analyses presented, based on the Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality, are extracted from insights of the authors' experiences as researchers and the literature. The main challenges are related to cultural, moral, political, and educational differences between researcher and researched; identification of the universe and sampling; access to informants through the barrier of distrust; and communication and language difficulties. Strategies to make research more successful involve: developing a thorough research protocol; creatively recruiting participants; developing strategies to facilitate communication; having a sensitive look; offering a structure of reciprocity; increasing trust, and triangulating research. The main methodological and pragmatic issues in studies with immigrants and refugees were explored, providing valuable guidance for future projects. However, in different migration situations, researchers must be aware of the possibility of other challenges arising during the investigative process.

Aim: The aim of this study is to examinate the research activity of nurses in primary health care and to know his dissemination. Method: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out between May 27 and June 29, 2022, in a Health Management Area Through a self-administrated questionnaire. A total of 242 nurses answered the questionnaire. A total of 5,2% have a Master ́s degree and none have a PhD. Some 8,3% have collaborated in a funded research project, with 0,4% subscribing to PAIDI groups. Participation is mostly collaborative with only 1 case as PI in funded projects. Contribution to congresses or other dissemination activities is 18.7% for oral communications and 16,5% for written communications. Results: Regarding the publication of results, 16,5% have published at least 1 scientific article, 1,3% in impact journals (none in Q1 or Q2). The subject matter of the publications is very diverse. Collaboration in research with other disciplines was 10,4%, and in research studies carried out with other institutions or health services are 11,3%. Conclusion: It is concluded that the research activity carried out in primary care is of low level and quality. There is dispersion both in the subject matter and in the nursing profiles that carry out research activity, which implies the lack of a consolidated network in research in care that supports care practice based on scientific evidence. RESUMEN

AIM: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) nursing has become more prominent with the increase in chronic HIV infections. This study examined articles related to HIV nursing to determine how the profession has developed and its future direction. DESIGN: A bibliometric analysis was conducted. METHODS: HIV nursing-related articles published in the Web of Science core collection between 1999 and 2022 were searched. VOSviewer was used to identify the contributions of countries, institutions and authors in HIV-related care. Collaborative maps, hot topics and keywords trends were analysed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. RESULTS: A total of 1513 publications were extracted. An increase in articles published between 1999 and 2012 was observed. After 2012, the increase in the number of publications was relatively stable. Since 2016, a downward trend in the number of publications has occurred. The USA, South Africa and the UK were the leading contributors to publications related to HIV nursing. The focus of the HIV nursing research has gradually shifted from "HIV infection", "risk factors", and "transmission routes" to "social support", "depression", and "public health". The result shows that increased collaboration among countries/regions can improve the development of HIV nursing and effectively reduce the global HIV infection rate. The mental health of patients has become a research centre in the field of HIV nursing. This study provides direction in clinical practice and future research areas in this field.

RESUMEN

Background: Millions of injuries and deaths occur yearly from preventable errors, despite interventions applied at the point of care. Although evidence suggests that system-level factors are responsible for hospital system health and patient safety, research has largely not accounted for hospital complexity. Prior to the authors' research regarding the communication of system-level events that influence hospital system health and patient safety, no nursing-specific communication theories that accounted for hospital complexity were identified. However, theory-guided research holds the potential to boost scientific knowledge through the provision of a robust foundational understanding of phenomena. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to discuss the concept derivation used to create a middle-range theory for the guidance of research involving system-level communication in complex healthcare environments as it relates to hospital system health and patient safety. Methods: Concept derivation as described by Walker and Avant (2018) was conducted using parent concepts from the Effective Nurse-to-Nurse Communication Framework, Symbolic Interactionism, Information Theory, Gerbner's Communication Model, and Complexity Theory. Results: Authentication of the derived Effective System-to-System Communication Theory (ESSCT) was confirmed through identification of coherent relationships between the concepts and conceptual statements, alignment with the nursing metaparadigm, and peer review by a subject matter expert from the nursing discipline. Additionally, research revealed an overall congruency between the research findings and the ESSCT's theoretical statements. Implications: The current healthcare climate necessitates that research involving communication be optimized by a germane theoretical underpinning that accounts for hospital complexity. The authors contend that the use of the derived theory may assist such endeavors.

RESUMEN

The American Nurses Association Enterprise (ANA Enterprise) Research Advisory Council plays a vital role in bringing nursing voices together and shaping the dynamic landscape of nursing research. Historically, its priorities have revolved around 4 pivotal research priorities: advancing research capacity, promoting interprofessional collaboration, enhancing data structures and governance, and propelling practice-based nursing research. In a remarkable transition, the 2024 Research Priorities of the ANA Enterprise Research Advisory Council align with the vision and strategic goals of the ANA Enterprise. The Council now places emphasis on the intersection of the research priorities with 5 key areas crucial for "elevating the profession of nursing globally": workforce development; advancing nurse well-being practices; deepening understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; expanding scope of practice; and measuring the value of nursing. This approach provides clear guidance for nursing research efforts, demonstrating a dedicated effort to harmonize the diverse voices within the nursing community. The objective is to shape a future where nursing research not only serves to inform practice but also enhances the overall value and impact of the nursing profession globally.
