RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To introduce and explore the current status and prospects of traditional Tibetan medicine (TTM) in China. METHODS: Government websites, national statistics, and authoritative papers from journal and government daily were fully searched. Further data were gathered by related experts. RESULTS: With the implementation of policies on growing TTM, there have been improvements in TTM's health care, scientific research, education, and pharmacy industry. TTM hospitals contribute to the health service system in Tibet Autonomous Region and other four Tibetan regions; TTM education has been incorporated into national education system in China; the number of scientific researches on TTM funded by the government is increasing year by year; Tibetan medicines become available to more people with the development of TTM pharmacy industry. CONCLUSION: TTM is well preserved and developed in China, and more efforts should be taken to promote its spread and development.

RESUMEN

This paper is intended to serve as a traditional Tibetan medical response to advancements in basic longevity research, with particular attention to current models of caloric restriction. This is a complicated task, as Tibetan medicine traditionally approaches dietary modification from a radically different perspective, and relies upon a complex model of health and balance in the treatment and prevention of disease. This paper offers a brief overview of the traditional Tibetan medicine (TTM) model and suggests potential areas for collaborative research on dietary modification.

RESUMEN

This paper addresses the development of scholastic medical traditions in Tibet through an extension of lists of physicians. I consider the debates that such lists and their accompanying narratives engender for Tibetan historians and reflect on the contributions they make to the identity of the medical tradition. By examining the structure and content of classificatory methods in medical histories, I argue that temporally organized lists document the place of medicine across time, geographically organized lists document the reach of medical knowledge across space, and thematically organized lists document the intertwining of medical knowledge and skill with other aspects of intellectual and civil life. In making these lists, medical historians paint a portrait of the Tibetan medical tradition that evokes connections to Buddhism and the strength and cosmopolitanism of the imperial period. Medical histories thus emphasize a picture of Tibet in the broader context of Asia- a Tibet whose empire lives on culturally or intellectually, if not militarily.

RESUMEN

Being one of the great medicine systems of the world, Tibetan Medicine developed in the 8th century AD and spread throughout central Asia over the intervening centuries. The first European contact with Tibetan remedies started around 1850 in Russia. By and by, they made their way as far a Switzerland where, in the meantime, they have been produced for more than 30 years and licensed by the health authorities. During the last years, comprehensive clinical and experimental research material has been generated on several formulas, especially on Padma 28 and Padma Lax. At the same time, a genuine European pool of experience was gained. Tibetan remedies are multicomponent mixtures. Special requirements on quality assessment, efficacy and safety arise on the path to a modern Tibetan multicompound. The production of such elaborately formulated com-positions has to take into account modern demands of GMPas well as traditional sources. In recent years, a rising popularity of Asian medicine can be observed. This need of patients, physicians and therapists also demands answers from the regulatory part. Aspects such as the justification of the composition (rationale of combination) and certain quality standards have to be newly defined by the authorities in this context. Only with adapted regulatory frameworks Tibetan medicines can find their place in Europe and, together with other medical traditions and biomedical research, integratively enrich the arsenal of intervention and prevention of Western industrial societies.
