RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To study the effect of quality control circle activity on improving nursing quality of patients with periodontitis. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with periodontitis admitted to our hospital from January 2016 to December 2017 were selected and divided into experimental group and control group according to the principle of random control, with 60 patients in each group. Patients in both groups received supragingival scaling, subgingival scaling and related symptomatic treatment, patients in the experimental group conducted nursing under the guidance of quality control circle, while patients in the control group received routine nursing. Satisfaction degree, therapeutic effect and gingival index, probe depth, gingival sulcus bleeding index, plaque index and periodontal attachment levels were recorded and compared between the two groups using SPSS 19.0 software package. RESULTS: After quality control circle to guide nursing, the patients' satisfaction (P=0.003) and the total effective rate of treatment was significantly higher than the control group(P=0.002), the incidence of oral health problems in the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group(P=0.037), PD, GI, SBI, PLI and AL levels in the experimental group were significantly lower than the control group(P=0.000). In addition to the tangible achievements, intangible results, such as quality control circles harmonious degree of nursing, sense of responsibility, communication, and problem solving ability, cohesion and quality control methods are improved distinctly in the experimental group. CONCLUSIONS: Quality control circle activity can improve nursing quality of patients with periodontitis.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To analyze the perioperative nursing characteristics about severe periodontitis patients with immediate zygomatic implantation, and to summarize the clinical nursing experience. METHODS: Preoperatively, all patients received psychological counseling, oral hygiene instruction, and periodontal care with necessary means after physical examination. Cooperative procedures were preformed between nurses and surgeon during operation. After operation, nursing interventions were given including wound care, pain control, ice compression, appropriate diet and close follow-up. RESULTS: All patients were successfully operated without serious complications. Favorable implant primary stability was achieved in each patient. No patient developed wound dehiscence, one patient had wound pain and one patient had minor facial swelling. Temporary restoration was conducted to restore occlusal relationship and masticatory function within 48 hours. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive nursing intervention during perioperative period is necessary and deserves to be applied for patients with severe periodontitis who are treated with immediate zygomatic implant surgery.

RESUMEN

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop and test the dental hygiene registration, a dental hygiene assessment scale for nurses working in institutions. BACKGROUND: Removal of dental plaque is a key factor in preventing oral health-related diseases. A simple, but reliable dental hygiene assessment scale that enables nurses to monitor residents' dental hygiene on a daily basis, will improve monitoring oral hygiene status and quality of dental health care. DESIGN: Descriptive study on the development and evaluation of a dental hygiene registration instrument. METHODS: The dental hygiene registration was developed and tested over several stages during the period of 2011-2014. Dental hygiene registration consists of a five-point plaque score scale. The score indicates whether measures are needed. A reference group comprising both medical and dental personnel designed dental hygiene registration. Dental plaque was used as a measure of dental hygiene. A pictorial series of teeth with varying amounts of plaque was used to achieve intra-examiner agreement. Dental hygiene registration assessments were scored 50 times to assess interexaminer reliability between one dental hygienist and one clinical nurse. Dental hygiene registration was validated against the plaque index score of the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index. The Regional Ethics Committee approved the study (2011/915). RESULTS: Estimates for intra-examiner agreement on plaque score were good for the dental hygienist (κ = 0·7) and very good for the clinical nurse (κ = 0·8). Estimates for interexaminer reliability for dental hygiene registration between the dental hygienist and the clinical nurse were moderate (κ = 0·4). dental hygiene registration corresponded significantly with Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (Spearman's correlation coefficient = 0·8, p < 0·001) indicating good validity. CONCLUSION: The developed dental hygiene registration appears to be reliable and valid. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Dental hygiene registration may contribute to the provision of daily oral care. Dental hygiene registration enables nurses to evaluate their own effort when assisting in dental hygiene and to register whether further effort is needed.

RESUMEN

AIM: To compare prevalence of caries and periodontal disease amongst patients on renal dialysis with healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted amongst 30 cases and 30 controls. Patients who were diagnosed with renal disease were included as cases and systemically healthy individuals as controls. Patients' perceptions of oral health were recorded using structured questionnaires. The WHO proforma (1997) was used to record the periodontal condition, caries status and the treatment need of each group. RESULTS: The number of people affected by periodontal disease (bleeding and calculus) was significantly higher amongst people with renal disease compared with controls (p < 0.05) and also mean caries prevalence amongst the cases was significantly higher compared with controls (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence for greater periodontal disease amongst patients with renal disease as compared with healthy individuals.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to determine whether periodontitis in pregnant women could be a risk factor for pre term low birth weight. The oral hygiene status, periodontal status and periodontal treatment needs of mothers who birthed infants with normal birth weight and normal gestation period (group A) and mothers who birthed pre term low birth weight infants (group B) were assessed and compared. The clinical parameters used were Oral Hygiene Index--simplified (OHI-S), gingival bleeding index (GBI), probing pocket depth and Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). This article presents the study and its findings and draws conclusions as to the relationship between poor periodontal condition and pre term low birth weight.
