RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Many studies identified that the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (PNLR) was associated with patient prognosis in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). We hypothesized that PNLR could be prognostic in patients with histological variants of NMIBC (VH-NMIBC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with VH-NMIBC admitted at our center between January 2009 and May 2019. The best cut-off value of NLR was measured by the receiver operating characteristic curve and Youden index. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression models were employed to evaluate the association between PNLR and disease prognosis, including recurrence-free survival (RFS), progression-free survival (PFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: A total of 243 patients with VH-NMIBC were enrolled in our study. According to the Kaplan-Meier method results, patients with PNLR ≥2.2 were associated with poor RFS (p<0.001), PFS (p<0.001), CSS (p<0.001), and OS (p<0.001). Multivariable analyses indicated that PNLR ≥ 2.2 was an independent prognostic factor of RFS (hazard ratio [HR], 2.11; 95% confidence interval [CI, 1.57-1.83; p<0.001), PFS (HR, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.70-3.21; p<0.001), CCS (HR, 2.87; 95% CI, 1.96-4.18; p< 0.001), and OS (HR, 2.83; 95% CI, 1.96-4.07; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study identified that PNLR ≥2.2 was usually associated with a poor prognosis for patients with VH-NMIBC.

(1) Background: Although a meta-analysis reported that the sensitivity of CD3+ TCRγδ+ cells for coeliac disease diagnosis was >93%, a recent study has suggested that sensitivity decreased to 65% in elderly patients. (2) Aim: To evaluate whether the sensitivity of intraepithelial lymphocyte cytometric patterns for coeliac disease diagnosis changes with advanced age. (3) Methods: We performed a multicentre study including 127 coeliac disease patients ≥ 50 years: 87 with baseline cytometry (45 aged 50-59 years; 23 aged 60-69 years; 19 aged ≥ 70 years), 16 also with a follow-up cytometry (on a gluten-free diet); and 40 with only follow-up cytometry. (4) Results: In Marsh 3 patients, a sensitivity of 94.7%, 88.9% and 86.7% was observed for each age group using a cut-off value of TCRγδ+ >10% (p = 0.27); and a sensitivity of 84.2%, 83.4% and 53.3% for a cut-off value >14% (p = 0.02; 50-69 vs. ≥70 years), with difference between applying a cut-off of 10% or 14% (p = 0.008). The TCRγδ+ count in the ≥70 years group was lower than in the other groups (p = 0.014). (5) Conclusion: In coeliac patients ≥ 70 years, the TCRγδ+ count decreases and the cut-off point of >10% is more accurate than >14%.

BACKGROUND: Neutral-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and many diseases, but there are few data about the reference interval (RI) of NLR, LMR, and PLR. METHODS: The neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, and platelet count of 404,272 Chinese healthy adults (>18 years old) were measured by Sysmex XE-2100 automatic hematology analyzer, and NLR, LMR, and PLR were calculated. According to CLSI C28-A3, the nonparametric 95% percentile interval is defined as the reference interval. RESULTS: The results of Mann-Whitney U test showed that NLR (p < .001) in male was significantly higher than that in female; LMR (p < .001) and PLR (p < .001) in male were significantly lower than that in female. Kruskal-Wallis H test showed that there were significant differences in NLR, LMR, and PLR among different genders and age groups (p < .001). The linear graph showed that the reference upper limit of NLR and PLR increased with age and the reference upper limit of LMR decreases with age in male population. In female population, the reference upper limit of NLR in 50-59 group, LMR in >80 group, and PLR in 70-79 group appeared a trough; the reference upper limit of NLR in >80 group, LMR in 50-59 group, and PLR in 40-49 group appeared peak. CONCLUSION: The establishment of RI for NLR, LMR, and PLR in Chinese healthy adults according to gender and age will promote the standardization of clinical application.

ABSTRACT: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was reported as an independent prognostic factor in many studies, but its cutoff point was not yet concluded. We set forth to prove and validate cutoff point of NLR as a poor prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in nonmetastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients.Retrospective cohort of nonmetastatic NPC adult patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy with curative aim at Siriraj hospital during 2007 to 2014 was enrolled. NLR was defined as absolute neutrophil count divided by absolute lymphocyte count. OS was the primary outcome. We explored our cutoff value by maximum concordance index (C-index) method, and we validated our cutoff and previously reported cutoff values by categorizing patients as NLR ≤ 3 or >3. Internal validation was done by bootstrapping method.Four hundred sixty-three patients were included. The median follow-up time was 70.8 months. By the end of June 2019, 211 patients had died. In univariable analysis of OS by Cox model, an NLR value of 3 showed the highest C-index (0.548) with an HR of 1.43 (95% CI: 1.08-1.89). After adjustment for body mass index, overall staging, age, gender, and histology in multivariable analysis, an NLR >3 was still an independent prognostic factor of poor OS (HR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.01-1.79). After internal validation, the resampling method shows no overfitting condition and corrected C-index was 0.547 for univariable analysis.A cutoff point of NLR of 3 from routine blood test was found to be an independent poor prognostic factor among patients with nonmetastatic NPC. This prognostic factor could be included in clinical prediction model of NPC and this further prediction model would select high risk patients for intensive treatment.

ABSTRACT: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been rapidly spreading on a global scale and poses a great threat to human health. However, efficient indicators for disease severity have not been fully investigated. Here, we aim to investigate whether dynamic changes of lymphocyte counts can predict the deterioration of patients with COVID-19.We collected data from 2923 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. Patients were then screened, and we focused on 145 severe cases and 60 critical cases (29 recovered cases, 31 deaths). The length of hospitalization was divided into five time points, namely admission, 25%, 50%, 75% and discharge or death, according to the principle of interquartile distance. A series of laboratory findings and clinical data were collected and analyzed during hospitalization. The results showed that there were differences in levels of leukocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes at almost every time point in the severe cases and 60 critical cases (29 recovered cases, 31 deaths). Further analysis showed that 70.2% of the COVID-19 cases had low circulating lymphocyte count, of which 64.1% were severe cases and 85.0% were critical cases (75.9% recovered cases and 93.5% died). Moreover, the lymphocyte count in dead cases was significantly lower than that of critical cases who recovered, at almost every time point in the critical groups. We also divided critical patients into group A (<1.1 × 109/L) and group B (>1.1 × 109/L) according to number of lymphocytes. Through survival analysis, we found that there was no significant difference in survival between group A and group B at admission (P = .3065). However, the survival rate according to lymphocyte levels in group A was significantly lower than that of group B at 25% hospital stay (on average day 6.5), 50% and 75% time points (P < .001).Lymphocyte counts that remain lower after the first week following symptom onset are highly predictive of in-hospital death of adults with COVID-19. This predictor may help clinicians identify patients with a poor prognosis and may be useful for guiding clinical decision-making at an early stage.

BACKGROUND: PCM is a neglected systemic mycosis endemic in Brazil. The middle-west region of Brazil has shown the highest number of PCM by Paracoccidioides lutzii (P lutzii) cases. Differentiating cases of severe PCM from non-severe ones should be a concern at the bedside. Diagnosis of severe PCM by P lutzii is based on the subjectivity of clinical manifestations, which can result in a delay in starting its treatment and, consequently evolution to severe sequelae. There is not laboratory biomarker available to support the early diagnosis of severe PCM that is feasible for all the realities that coexist in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of laboratory biomarkers as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the diagnosis of severe PCM. PATIENTS/METHODS: ESR, CRP and NLR were analysed for 44 patients with PCM by P lutzii and a Receiver Operation Characteristic (ROC) curve were generated to identify the NLR cut-off point and point out the presence of severe PCM. RESULTS: Sixteen (36.4%) had severe PCM and 28 (63.6%) had non-severe PCM. The mean NLR was higher and statistically significant among patients with severe PCM than among those with non-severe PCM. The area under the ROC curve was 0.859 for the diagnosis of severe PCM. The cut-off point for NLR for the diagnosis of severe PCM was 3.318 (sensitivity of 100%, specificity of 77%). CONCLUSIONS: According to results, it is plausible to conclude that NLR represents a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of severe PCM.

BACKGROUND: To explore the relationship between peripheral lymphocyte counts (PLCs) and the mortality risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as well as the potential of PLC for predicting COVID-19 hospitalized patients death. METHODS: Baseline characteristics, laboratory tests, imaging examinations, and outcomes of 134 consecutive COVID-19 hospitalized patients were collected from a tertiary hospital in Wuhan city from January 25 to February 24, 2020. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the PLC at admission and mortality risk in COVID-19 patients and to establish a model for predicting death in COVID-19 hospitalized patients based on PLC. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found a non-linear relationship and threshold saturation effect between PLC and mortality risk in COVID-19 patients (infection point of PLC: 0.95 × 109/L). Multiple regression analysis showed that when PLCs of COVID-19 patients were lower than 0.95 × 109/L, the patients had a significantly higher mortality risk as compared to COVID-19 patient with PLCs > 0.95 × 109/L (OR 7.27; 95% CI 1.10-48.25). The predictive power of PLC for death in COVID-19 patients (presented as area under the curve) was 0.78. The decision curve analysis showed that PLC had clinical utility for the prediction of death in COVID-19 inpatients. CONCLUSIONS: PLC had a non-linear relationship with mortality risk in COVID-19 inpatients. Reduced PLCs (< 0.95 × 109/L) were associated with an increased mortality risk in COVID-19 inpatients. PLCs also had a potential predictive value for the death of COVID-19 inpatients.

ABSTRACT: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) becomes a global pandemic in 2020. Early identification of severe ill patients is a top priority for clinicians. We aimed to describe clinical features and risk factors of severe-critically ill patients with COVID-19 in Jiangsu Province.This multi-centered retrospective study collected the information of 631 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized at 28 authorized hospitals in Jiangsu province from January 23, 2019 to March 13, 2020.A total of 583 adult patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled for final analysis, including 84 severe-critically ill patients and 499 mild-moderate patients. Median age of the severe-critically ill patients was 57.0 years old (interquartile range, 49.0-65.8), and 50 (59.5%) were males. Multisystemic laboratory abnormalities were observed on admission for severe-critically ill patients. These patients showed more noticeable radiologic abnormalities and more coexisting health issues as compared to the mild-moderate patients. Most of the severe-critically ill COVID-19 patients became deteriorated in 2 weeks after diagnosis. Age, D-dimer, and lymphocytes were independently associated with the progression of severe-critically illness.Older age, higher D-dimer levels and less lymphocyte counts on admission are potential risk factors for COVID-19 patients to develop into severe and critically illness.

The lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been reported to be useful for predicting the prognosis of various malignancies, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, little is known about the role of LMR and PLR in the prognosis of DLBCL patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We retrospectively evaluated the prognostic value of the LMR and PLR in patients with newly diagnosed AIDS-related diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (AR-DLBCL) who were treated with CHOP-like chemotherapy at a single institution. In 33 AR-DLBCL patients, the median follow-up period was 32 months (range: 7-85 months), with an estimated 2-year overall survival (OS) rate of 79.9%. The univariate analysis confirmed the LMR ≤ 2.74 (p = .015), PLR ≥ 337.7 (p = .019), and moderate anemia (p = .045) were associated with inferior survival. The independent significant association between low LMR and poor OS in the multivariate analysis was identified (HR: 0.033, 95% CI: 0.001-0.853, p = .040). However, PLR (p = .459) and moderate anemia (p = .102) did not retain an independent significance in the multivariate analysis. Moreover, compared with the high-LMR group, patients with low-LMR more frequently had B symptoms (p = .010) and lower CD4+T cell count (p < .001). The pretreatment LMR may be an effective prognostic factor for predicting OS in patients with AR-DLBCL.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective review evaluated the causes of severe eosinophilia (≥5000 eosinophils/L). Higher eosinophilia levels are more likely to cause tissue damage and may reflect disease severity. METHODS: We reviewed 193 cases of patients seen at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, between January 2015 to May 2020 who had a peak absolute eosinophil count of at least 5000/µL. RESULTS: Thirty-nine percent of cases were attributable to a hematologic or oncologic cause. These cases had the highest mean peak absolute eosinophil count at 11,698/µL. Twenty percent of cases were secondary to drug reactions, of which 90% took place in an inpatient setting. Three percent of cases were from helminthic infection, the majority of which were in returning travelers. CONCLUSIONS: In our region of study, hematologic and oncologic cases are important causes of severe eosinophilia, drug reactions are a common etiology in the inpatient setting, and infections are a rare cause.

INTRODUCTION: Covid-19 pneumonia CT extent correlates well with outcome including mortality. However, CT is not widely available in many countries. This study aimed to explore the relationship between Covid-19 pneumonia CT extent and blood tests variations. The objective was to determine for the biological variables correlating with disease severity the cut-off values showing the best performance to predict the parenchymal extent of the pneumonia. METHODS: Bivariate correlations were calculated between biological variables and grade of disease extent on CT. Receiving Operating Characteristic curve analysis determined the best cutoffs for the strongest correlated biological variables. The performance of these variables to predict mild (<10%) or severe pneumonia (>50% of parenchyma involved) was evaluated. RESULTS: Correlations between biological variables and disease extent was evaluated in 168 patients included in this study. LDH, lymphocyte count and CRP showed the strongest correlations (with 0.67, -0.41 and 0.52 correlation coefficient, respectively). Patients were split into a training and a validation cohort according to their centers. If one variable was above/below the following cut-offs, LDH>380, CRP>80 or lymphocyte count <0.8G/L, severe pneumonia extent on CT was detected with 100% sensitivity. Values above/below all three thresholds were denoted in 73% of patients with severe pneumonia extent. The combination of LDH<220 and CRP<22 was associated with mild pneumonia extent (<10%) with specificity of 100%. DISCUSSION: LDH showed the strongest correlation with the extent of Covid-19 pneumonia on CT. Combined with CRP±lymphocyte count, it helps predicting parenchymal extent of the pneumonia when CT scan is not available.

Real-time polymerase chain reaction-based (RT-PCR) analyses do not achieve sufficient sensitivity in the diagnosis of the disease. METHODS: The data from 2217 patients diagnosed as COVID-19 between March 2020 and June 2020 and hospitalized or discharged with home isolation were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, comorbidities, PCR results, initial computed tomography (CT), laboratory values, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)/Lymphocyte ratio, initial treatments and last status were recorded. The diagnostic sensitivity of LDH/Lymphocyte ratio, which is the main purpose of the study, was analyzed statistically. RESULTS: In order to test the effectiveness of LDH/Lymphocyte ratio for COVID-19 for diagnostic purposes, CT results were considered as gold standard. The area under the curve (AUC) was found to be 0.706 (p < 0.001; cut-off > 0.06) (Sensitivity: 76.4, specificity: 59.60). For the evaluation of LDH/Lymphocyte ratio in terms of survival, AUC was found to be 0.749 (p < 0.001; cut-off > 0.21) (Sensitivity: 70.59, specificity: 73.88). CONCLUSION: Studies based on radiological findings have demonstrated that CT involvement has higher sensitivity. LDH/Lymphocyte ratio was analyzed in terms of diagnosis and mortality with using specific CT involvement as gold standard method which was found to be a more sensitive due to PCR false negativity; 0.06 and 0.21 were obtained as cut off values for diagnosis and mortality.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the superiority of C-reactive protein (CRP) lymphocyte ratio (CLR) in acute appendicitis (AA) and perforated appendicitis (PA) compared to routine laboratory parameters in patients where radiological tests were insufficient to clarify the diagnosis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional and retrospective study, the patients were divided into two groups as PA and AA. Age, sex, length of hospital stay, leukocytes, neutrophil, lymphocyte, CRP, and CLR were recorded at the time of diagnosis. Regression analyses were performed for the parameters, which were found to be statistically significant in univariate analysis. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-one patients were included in this study (111 patients in the AA group, and 20 patients in the PA group). Age (p=0.03), gender (p<0.001), length of hospital stay (p<0.001), CRP (p<0.001), NLR (p=0.004) and CLR (p<0.001) were significantly different between both groups. However, only CLR was found as a significant risk factor in PA cases (p=0.016). The ROC analysis showed the highest AUC value in CLR (0.83). The cut-off value for predicting PA was found 0.45. CONCLUSION: This study provided that the CLR is an important parameter for the differentiation of AA and PA patients. Besides, it is a valuable predictor in the preoperative risk classification of these patients.

This single-center, retrospective study aimed to explore the immune characteristics of COVID-19 and biomarkers to predict the severity of this disease. Patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 (n = 215) treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from January 24 to March 12, 2020, were included in the study and classified into severe and non-severe groups. Peripheral immunocyte count and cytokine statuses were compared. The correlation between immune status, cytokine levels, and disease severity was analyzed. Leukocyte numbers were normal in both groups; however, they were relatively high (7.19 × 109/L) in patients of the severe group. Leukocyte distributions differed between the two groups; the severe group had a higher percentage of neutrophils and lower percentage of lymphocytes compared with the non-severe group, and absolute lymphocyte numbers were below normal in both groups, and particularly deficient in patients in the severe group. Lymphocyte counts have negative correlation with duration of hospital period whereas neutrophil count has no significant correlation with it. Of tested cytokines, IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the severe group (P = 0.0418). Low level of lymphocyte predicts severity of COVID-19. IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the severe group, especially in some extremely severe patients. But we did not detect the significant correlation between severity of COVID-19 with IL-6 level which may be due to limited case numbers. Our observations encourage future research to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms and to improve treatment outcome of COVID-19.

PURPOSE: We examined risk factors that may have contributed to Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation among patients who underwent lung transplantation (LTx). METHODS: We reviewed medical records of patients who underwent LTx at a tertiary healthcare hospital in South Korea between January 2013 and May 2017. We excluded patients who died within the first year after LTx and those lost to follow-up. CMV reactivation was defined as the detection of CMV titers above 3000 copies/ml regardless of specific symptoms after prophylaxis cessation. RESULTS: Of 89 patients included, 39 (43.8%) developed CMV reactivation. Of those 39 patients, 16 (41.0%) experienced additional CMV reactivation. Multivariate analysis identified lymphocyte counts below 1.0 × 103/µl (hazard ratio [HR] 49.33, p < 0.001) and use of steroids at more than twice the standard dose (HR 8.07, p < 0.001) as risk factors for CMV reactivation. The multivariate model also identified chronic kidney disease (CKD; HR 5.19, p = 0.016) and pneumonia (HR 17.22, p = 0.013) as risk factors for repetitive CMV reactivation. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that lymphopenia and high doses of steroids may be important risk factors for CMV reactivation in LTx patients. Our results also suggest that repetitive CMV reactivation may be associated with CKD and pneumonia.

Objectives: It is important to select proper quality specifications for laboratories and external quality assessment (EQA) providers for their quality control and assessment. The aim of this study is to produce new total error (TE) specifications for lymphocyte subset enumeration by analyzing the allowable TE using EQAS data and comparing them with that based on reliable biological variation (BV). Methods: A total of 54,400 results from 1,716 laboratories were collected from China National EQAS for lymphocyte subset enumeration during the period 2017-2019. The EQA data were grouped according to lower limits of reference intervals for establishing concentration-dependent specifications. The TE value that 80% of laboratories can achieve were considered as TE specifications based on state of the art. The BV studies compliant with Biological Variation Data Critical Appraisal Checklist (BIVAC) were used to calculate the three levels of TE specifications. Then these TE specifications were compared for determining the recommended TE specifications. Results: Four parameters whose quality specifications could achieve the optimum criteria were as follows: the percentages of CD3+, CD3+CD4+ (high concentration) and CD3-CD16/56+ cells, and the absolute count of CD3-CD16/56+ cells. Only the TE specifications of CD3-CD19+ cells could achieve the minimum criteria. The TE specifications of remaining parameters should reach the desirable criteria. Conclusions: New TE specifications were established by combining the EQA data and reliable BV data, which could help laboratories to apply proper criteria for continuous improvement of quality control, and EQA providers to use robust acceptance limits for better evaluation of EQAS results.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze clinical characteristics and outcome of COVID-19 patients with underlying rheumatic diseases (RD) on immunosuppressive agents. METHOD: A case series of COVID-19 patients with RD on disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) were studied by a retrospective chart review. A literature search identified 9 similar studies of single cases and case series, which were also included. RESULTS: There were 4 COVID-19 inpatients with RD from our hospital, and the mean age was 57 ± 21 years. Two patients had a mild infection, and 2 developed severe COVID-19 related respiratory complications, including 1 patient on secukinumab requiring mechanical ventilation and 1 patient on rituximab developing viral pneumonia requiring supplemental oxygenation. All 4 patients had elevated acute phase reactants, 2 patients had mild COVID-19 with lymphopenia, and 2 patients had severe COVID-19 with normal lymphocyte counts, and high levels of IL-6. None of the patients exhibited an exacerbation of their underlying RD. In the literature, there were 9 studies of COVID-19 involving 197 cases of various inflammatory RD. Most patients were on DMARDs or biologics, of which TNFα inhibitors were most frequently used. Two tocilizumab users had a mild infection. Two patients were on rituximab with 1 severe COVID-19 requiring mechanical ventilation. Six patients were on secukinumab with 1 hospitalization. Of the total 201 cases, 12 died, with an estimated mortality of 5.9% CONCLUSION: Patients with RD are susceptible to COVID-19. Various DMARDs or biologics may affect the viral disease course differently. Patients on hydroxychloroquine, TNFα antagonists or tocilizumab may have a mild viral illness. Rituximab or secukinumab could worsen the viral disease. Further study is warranted.

Objectives. To evaluate the strategy of checking vaccine titers after completion of chemotherapy. Study Design. Retrospective review of pediatric oncology patients who completed chemotherapy. Demographics, post-chemotherapy titers, and absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) were analyzed. Results. Ninety patients met inclusion criteria, and 87% of patients had at least one titer checked. Comparing patients <7 years and those ≥7 years at diagnosis, there was no difference in incidence of negative titers except mumps; those <7 years old were more likely to have negative titers (58% vs 20%, P = .003). Comparing those <13 years old to ≥13 years old, there was no difference in negative titers except mumps (45% vs 19%, P = .02) and tetanus (44% vs 0%, P = .002). No patient maintained all protective titers after completion of chemotherapy. Time to ALC recovery was not predictive of positive titers. Conclusion. Checking titers after chemotherapy is not recommended. Providers should assume loss of immunity.

Objectives. To identify risk factors associated with the prognosis of pertussis-like coughing. Methods. A retrospective study on children hospitalized with pertussis-like coughing from 2018 to 2019. We collected all the case data from medical records including age, gender, vaccination, clinical symptoms, complication, pathogens, white blood cell (WBC) count, lymphocyte ratio, application of macrolide antibiotics, usage of sulfamethoxazole, and usage of inhaled glucocorticoids. Logistic regression was used in this study. Results. A total of 213 hospitalized children with pertussis-like coughing were included in this study. About 70 children were cured within 2 weeks. One120 children were cured from 2 weeks to 3 months, including cases of initial attack and relapse. Symptoms lasting longer than 3 months accounts for 10.8%. Bordetella pertussis, WBC count >20 × 109/L and lymphocyte ratio >60% were associated with poor prognosis (P < .05). Conclusions. Bordetella pertussis, WBC count, and lymphocyte ratio are independent risk factors for poor prognosis.
