Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT), which have been proven to be effective, are tools which are simple to use and implement. In Sainte Anne hospital, consultations with a nurse specialised in CBT were first set up in 2011.The nurse specialised in CBT sees the patients on a one-to-one basis and often plays, within the multidisciplinary team, the role of care coordinator.

RESUMEN

Scheduled for publication in May 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), will guide clinical diagnoses, treatment plans, medication choices and protocols, insurance reimbursements, and research agendas throughout the United States. It will also serve as a reference manual for clinicians around the world. This primary diagnostic source used by psychiatric and mental health providers is undergoing significant change in organization and content relative to the previous edition. This article provides a general overview of what to expect in the DSM-5, highlighting major aspects of the revision. Included is a list of the proposed diagnostic categories and an overview of some of the debate and discussion accompanying the changes. Implications for psychiatric nurses and psychiatric nursing are presented.

RESUMEN

OVERVIEW: The suicide rate among children and adolescents has increased worldwide over the past few decades, and many who attempt suicide are first seen at EDs. At Childrens Hospital Boston (CHB), an algorithm-the Risk of Suicidality Clinical Practice Algorithm-has been developed to ensure evidence-based care supported by best practice guidelines. The authors of this article provide an overview of pediatric suicide and suicide attempts; describe screening, assessment, and interventions used at CHB; and discuss the nursing implications. An illustrative case study is also provided. KEYWORDS: algorithm, Asperger's syndrome, attempted suicide, bullying, emergency, emergency department, patient safety, pediatrics, pediatric suicide, suicide, suicide screening, triage.

Since Asperger Syndrome was described for the first time in the mid twentieth century as a pathology, a big progress has been done in the field of health. In recent years the demand from patients and their families to psychiatric services and more specifically to nurses working in mental health area has constantly increase. The aim of this paper is to release a care proposal specifically developed for mental health nurses. This care proposal was carried out using North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) taxonomy, Nursing Outcomes Classification(NOC) and Nursing interventions Classification (NIC). This is intended to provide full care for people affected by the syndrome and their families (AU)

RESUMEN

The purpose of this article is to describe the role nurse practitioners can play in the diagnosis, early intervention, and coordination of care for children with Asperger's Syndrome and their families. The article outlines strategies for how nurse practitioners in both school and primary care settings can use the Individualized Educational Plan as a mechanism where they may join an interdisciplinary team of professionals and parents. Nurse practitioners can assist parents, children, and school personnel in planning, intervening, and coordinating services for these families and their children, who are at risk for academic failure and social isolation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether grounded theory can be applied as a cross-disciplinary evaluative framework for assessing health information, especially within domain-specific peer-to-peer networks. METHODS: Using a grounded-theory approach, we seek to identify recurring themes of peer-based interaction, without the ongoing management of clinical experts, as a way to determine stakeholder concerns and interests in a domain of frequent clinical uncertainty and treatment, Asperger's syndrome. RESULTS: We find that users of web-based information in such areas often report reliance on information for medical decision making and disease management, at times to the point where interaction becomes a form of 'cybertherapy.' Further, such groups often evolve into disease-specific, 'virtual support groups', even where discussions highlight a lack of consensus regarding the role, function and quality of information within this unique domain. CONCLUSION: A grounded theory approach can successfully be applied in a domain-specific setting to identify themes in unstructured peer-to-peer discussion of ill-defined diseases and treatments.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To review Asperger syndrome characteristics, assessment tools, interventions, outcomes, and the role of the nurse practitioner in diagnosing and caring for children with Asperger syndrome. DATA SOURCES: Review of published literature on and diagnostic criteria of the condition. CONCLUSIONS: Asperger syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder or an autism spectrum disorder that is thought to have an incidence higher than that of autism. Asperger syndrome is different from autism, with a lack of delayed language as the most distinct difference between Asperger syndrome and autism. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Because of the importance of early diagnosis of Asperger syndrome for outcome improvement, screening at all well-child visits from infancy on is of utmost importance to primary care pediatric nurse practitioners. With early diagnosis, timely intervention is possible, which is proven to show improvement in outcomes.

RESUMEN

TOPIC: Pervasive developmental disorders, a group of conditions marked by impaired social reciprocity, communication deficits, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. PURPOSE: Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are in a unique position to assess these children, make appropriate diagnoses, and refer parents for further consultation and intervention. SOURCES: Current literature, formal training on diagnostic instruments, and clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS: Diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorders requires knowledge of normal growth and development and other childhood psychiatric disorders. The role of the APN includes counseling parents regarding their child's legal right to intervention and guiding parents to make empirically based choices for intervention.
