RESUMEN

Clinical supervision is a strategy supporting nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals in the provision of quality healthcare. Clinical supervision involves regular, protected time for reflection. Adequately prepared supervisors are essential, however there is limited knowledge about education/training programs and even less about those that are not discipline-specific. This paper 1) describes an eight-day foundational program, Clinical Supervision for Role Development Training as situated within the Spurr Supervisor Training Model and, 2) presents the results from routinely collected evaluation data. Simple descriptive analysis and latent content analysis were used to analyse data from 226 participants who filled out a self-administered questionnaire. Participants reported increased knowledge (87.5%), skills (87%) and confidence to apply the techniques learnt (85.5%); 95% found practice sessions to be useful, and expectations of the training had been met. Qualitative data supported the positive quantitative results. The program was positively assessed by participants, irrespective of professional discipline. The pragmatic nature of the training and the safe learning environment was considered important to the development of skills and confidence as a supervisor. A more robust evaluation process and prospective, longitudinal research is needed to better understand the expectations and learning experience of participants, and implementation in the healthcare environment.

RESUMEN

The 2018 International Nursing Administration Research Conference, Grassroots to Global, was held in Atlanta, Georgia, with attendees from 38 US states, Canada, and China. Presenters discussed the need for nurse leaders to be prepared to partner with those inside and outside of healthcare to create innovative, interprofessional care delivery models; advocate for advancements in technology to address healthcare access shortages; and lead new areas of research that can drive policy change to support nurse leaders in long-term care and the essential role of the nurse manager in creating optimal practice environments for quality outcomes. This article will report on these important insights.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to report the experience of developing workshops as an intervention strategy in an action research, aiming to review the work of supervision in hospital nursing. METHOD: to report of the experience of planning, developing and evaluating workshops with a psychosocial approach. Three workshops were held, in a reserved place, with the participation of 21 supervisors of a public university hospital. Each workshop was organized with heating, day work, closure with syntheses and consensus. RESULTS: the work provided the exchange of experiences, reflections and proposals for difficulties identified in the work process that distract supervisors from the management of assistance such as communication failure, reworking and lack of definition of assignments in the team. CONCLUSION: the dynamics of the workshops favored supervisors to propose solutions to the difficulties of their practice in a more democratic and participative way, through dialogical interactions, sharing of the feelings pertinent to the work context and establishing consensus for the completion of the task.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to approach the basic conceptions of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology and its articulation with the subfield of nursing by focusing on managerial aspects. METHOD: reflections are based on the concepts of field, habitus, capital and symbolic power applied to the subfield of nursing by favoring the understanding of organizational dynamics and its agents. RESULT: health institutions are living structures in the adverse social world where nursing agents' interests express their way of thinking and acting according to the place they occupy in the organization. These spaces of fight and symbolic violence tend to inculcate ideologies that meet these agents' interests. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The proposition theory is fruitful to reflect the practice of management by unveiling the relationships and role that organizations establish about their agents. She warns about the possibility of seeing changes in the subfield of nursing.

AIM: To examine whether the impact of mistreatment by patients on nurses' burnout can be exacerbated or attenuated depending on emotion-regulation strategies, and to explore the moderating role of supervisor support in the relationship between mistreatment and deep acting. BACKGROUND: Aggression from patients is known to contribute significantly to nurse burnout. To date, the moderating role of emotion regulation strategies in the mistreatment-outcomes relationship has seldom been considered. METHODS: The sample consisted of 105 nurses who were working while studying for their Master's degree. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. The research hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analyses. RESULTS: Mistreatment and surface acting significantly contributed to nurse burnout. Deep acting had a buffering effect on the relationship between mistreatment and depersonalisation. The results also indicate that supervisor support was negatively associated with surface acting and may increase deep acting in response to mistreatment. CONCLUSION: The use of an effective strategy for regulating emotions and supervisor support can protect nurses from the depletion of emotional resources. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: By introducing emotion-regulation skills training and by encouraging the availability of support from supervisors, health-care organisations can help nurses better cope with emotionally charged interactions.

RESUMEN

AIMS: This article aims to contribute to the growing field of spirituality and nursing management by analysing bibliographic data on peer-reviewed research in the field. BACKGROUND: Articles on spirituality and nursing management often claim that these fields have grown over the past two decades. This article gathers empirical evidence to test these claims. EVALUATION: Bibliometric data on peer-reviewed research articles on nursing, nursing management, spirituality and religion in the Social Sciences Citation Index were analysed to ascertain general trends in publication and citation. KEY ISSUES: The data support claims that research activity and interest in both spirituality and religion in the field of nursing have grown steeply over recent years, and continue to accelerate. CONCLUSIONS: The research identified spirituality as a beneficial variable in management, training and/or care scenarios. Critical studies of nursing management spiritual initiatives could add considerably to the growing body of research and theory in this field. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: It is essential that nurse managers be equipped to foster not only a broader understanding of the variety of faith traditions found in a multi-cultural society, but also to develop an understanding of the ways in which individuals engage in spiritual practice outside traditional religious settings.

RESUMEN

Care coordination is an integral piece for the success of health care reform. Nurses are positioned to be able to bring a strong perspective for assisting individual's health needs across the continuum from illness to wellness. Currently, nurses are not consistently being fully prepared to provide care coordination. In order for clinical nurses in acute care, clinics, and across the care continuum to be able to perform this integral and emerging role, nurse leaders will need to restructure, engage with these nursing roles, and plan to provide resources for a new educational curriculum for their continuing professional development.

This paper aims to understand how supervisor-nurses of a big private hospital in Belo Horizonte build their professional identity. In order to do that, a descriptive analytical case study was carried out in which nine supervisor nurses were included. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and the analysis by means of the content analysis technique. The analysis focused on: the supervisor nurses’ perception concerning the new management procedure used at the hospital; supervisor-nurses’ routine at work; nursing education and professional practice; qualifications of an ideal nurse for the management position; and supervisor-nurses’ carrier expectations. The results showed that the new management strategy used by the hospital was considered a significant space for the supervisor-nurses’ identity reconfiguration, especially because it demonstrates a disharmony between academic instruction and daily practice at work (AU)

RESUMEN

Over the years, the LSA role and function have developed and strengthened significantly and it is crucial that this development continues in the new NHS. The biennial LSAMO UK conference which is entitled Future proofing supervision will launch the strategic plan for 2012-2015. It is essential that LSAMOs and supervisors of midwives (SoMs) look to the future to continue to maintain safety and protect the public, but within a modernised forward thinking framework. The forum will work collaboratively to encourage a greater consistency in the provision of supervision to ensure the standards set by the NMC for the LSAs and the supervision of midwives are met. Protecting the public and supporting safe midwifery practice will continue to be the driving principles behind the LSAMO UK forum's work plan. The specific challenges to LSAMOs will be to continue providing leadership and support and be pivotal in addressing the future significant challenges faced by the NHS throughout the UK.

RESUMEN

Every nurse has the opportunity to make a positive impact on the profession through day-to-day advocacy for nurses and the nursing profession. In this article the author defines advocacy; describes advocacy skills every nurse can employ to advocate for a safe and healthy work environment; and explains how nurses can advocate for nursing as part of their daily activity whether they are point-of-care nurses, nurse managers, or nurse educators. The advocacy practices discussed are applicable whether advocating on one's own behalf, for colleagues at the unit level, or for issues at the organizational or system level.

RESUMEN

AIM: This article presents a report of a concept analysis of managerial coaching. BACKGROUND: Managerial coaching has been identified as a means for managers to give support to staff nurses, however, no clear delineation of what behaviours and attributes constitute managerial coaching or differentiate it from other career development relationships is provided in the current nursing literature. DATA SOURCES: The CINAHL, ProQuest, Business Source Complete and PscyhIFNO databases were searched for articles published between 1980-2009 using the keywords coaching, managerial coaching, nurse manager support, nursing leadership, self-efficacy, work environment and empowerment. REVIEW METHODS: A hybrid approach was used, incorporating both Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis and King's conceptual system and Theory of Goal Attainment to explore the meaning of managerial coaching. Inclusive years of search ranged from 1980-2009. FINDINGS: Managerial coaching is a specific dyadic relationship between the nurse manager and staff nurse intended to improve skills and knowledge as they relate to expected job performance. Antecedents and consequences are categorized at the individual and organizational level. Defining attributes, empirical referents and a model case are presented. CONCLUSION: The theoretical definition for this concept helps to differentiate it from other types of career development relationships and will give a basis for nurse managers to understand what skills and attributes are necessary to establish an effective managerial coaching relationship with staff nurses. Conceptualization will also assist in developing empirical studies examining managerial coaching behaviours in the work environment.
