The scarcity and increase in the price of animal feeds have attracted the attention of nutritionists to address this issue. The inclusion of plant extracts and enzymes to protein-reduced diet could be a feasible strategy to reducing the feed cost. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of Yucca schidigera extract and multi-carbohydrase in low crude protein (CP) diets of broiler on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass metrics, and noxious gas levels in the excreta. A total of 480, 1-d-old ROSS 308 were randomly allocated into 4 dietary treatments, six replication, and 20 birds/cage. Phase 1, T1(CP 21%, ME 2,969 kcal/kg); T2 (CP 19%, ME 2,863 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca); T3 (CP 17%, ME 2,865 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca); T4 (CP 17%, ME 2,861 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca + 0.1% multi-carbohydrase). Phase 2, T1 (CP 19%, ME 3,086 kcal/kg); T2 (CP 17%, ME 2,977 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca); T3 (CP 15%, ME 2,978 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca); T4 (CP 15%, ME 2,978 kcal/kg + 0.02% Yucca + 0.1% 0.1% multi-carbohydrase). Although the addition of YS and multi-carbohydrase to the low CP diets on the growth performance did not improve, it revealed the positive result on the nutrient digestibility, carcass parameters, and noxious gas emission. Overall, broilers supplemented with YS 0.02% and multi-carbohydrase (0.1%) demonstrated the best production performances compared to the other treatment groups. Thus, a combination of YS and multi-carbohydrase could be added to the diets with low CP to boost broiler production performance.(AU)

Introduction: Bacterial agents and oxidative reactions are involved in health and food preservation issues, and Yucca baccata (Y. baccata) can be a source of compounds with practical applications in both areas, but its investigation remains limited. Materials and Methods: Butanolic (YBE) and aqueous (YAE) extracts were obtained from the stem of Y. baccata. The total saponin, phenolic, and flavonoid contents were analyzed in the YBE and YAE. The antioxidant capacity of the extracts was determined by the DPPH, TEAC, FRAP, and ORAC assays. Seven Gram-positive and five Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria strains were used to determine the MIC and MBC. Results: Saponin contents were 30% and 1.81% (w/w) in the YBE and YAE, respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts were 29.5 µg GAEmg-1 (2.95%) and 5.58 µg GAEmg-1 (0.56%) in the YBE and 69.92 µg QEmg-1 (7.0%) and 1.65 µg QEmg-1 (0.165%) in the YAE. The antioxidant capacity values of YBE were 29.18 µg TEmg-1, 121.8 µg TEmg-1, 33.41 µg TEmg-1, and 156.84 µg TEmg-1 by the DPPH, TEAC, FRAP, and ORAC assays, respectively. YAE had lower antioxidant values than YBE (P < 0.05). Values of 80 mgmL-1 and 100 mgmL-1 were estimated for MIC and MBC of YBE against the Gram-positive bacteria. Values of 100 mgmL-1 and 120 mgmL-1 for MIC and MBC of YBE were estimated against the Gram-negative bacteria. No MIC and MBC were obtained for YAE. Conclusion: YBE exhibited higher antioxidant activity than YAE. Apparently, antibacterial properties of the YBE tended to be higher than those of the YAE.

Endemic species distributed in fragmented habitats are highly vulnerable to extinction because they may have low genetic diversity. However, some life-history traits can mitigate the effect of genetic drift on populations. We analysed the level and distribution of genetic variation and ancestral population size of Yucca capensis, a long-lived endemic plant of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Its populations are scattered across a habitat that is suffering accelerated transformation. We used six nuclear microsatellites to genotype 224 individuals from 17 locations across the entire species' geographic range. We estimated polymorphisms, heterozygosity and genetic structure. We also evaluated the ancestral and recent effective size and time since the population started to change. We found high heterozygosity, high polymorphism and low differentiation among locations, suggesting a panmictic population across the range. We also detected a large ancestral effective population size, which suffered a strong reduction in the Mid-Holocene. Despite changes in environmental conditions caused by habitat modification, the high diversity and low differentiation in Y. capensis may result from its large ancestral effective size and life-history traits, such as plant longevity, clonal growth and mating system, which reduce the rate of loss of genetic variation. However, the dependence on a specialist pollinator that displays short flight range can reduce gene flow among the plant populations and could, shortly, lead them into an extinction vortex.

Auxin is involved in almost every aspect of plant growth and development, from embryogenesis to senescence. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is the main known natural auxin that is synthesized by enzymes tryptophan aminotransferase of arabidopsis (TAA) and YUCCA (YUC) of the flavin-containing monooxygenases family (FMO) from one of the tryptophan-dependent pathways. Genome-wide identification and comprehensive analysis of the YUC-protein family have been conducted in Coffea canephora in the present study. A total of 10 members CcYUC gene family were identified in C. canephora. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the CcYUC protein family is evolutionarily conserved, and they consist of four groups. In contrast, bioinformatic analysis predicted a hydrophobic transmembrane helix (TMH) for one CcYUC (YUC10) member only. Isoelectric point (pI), molecular mass (Ms), signal peptide, subcellular localization, and phosphorylation sites were predicted for CcYUC proteins. YUC enzymes require the prosthetic group flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and the cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) for their enzymatic activity. Therefore, we include the molecular docking for CcYUC2-FAD-NADPH-IPyA and yucasin, which is a specific inhibitor for YUC activity. The docking results showed FAD and NADPH binding at the big and small domain sites, respectively, in CcYUC2. IPyA binds very close to FAD along the big domain, and yucasin competes for the same site as IPA, blocking IAA production. Furthermore, in silico point mutations affect the stability of the CcYUC2-4 proteins.

The aim of this study was to determine whether curcumin and yucca extract addition in broiler feed improves growth, health, and meat quality, and to measure coccidiostatic and antimicrobial activity so as to enable replacement of conventional performance enhancers. We used 240 birds in four treatments: CN, basal feed with antibiotics and coccidiostatic drugs; CU, feed with 100 mg/kg of curcumin; YE, feed with 250 mg/kg of yucca extract; and CU + YE, feed with the combination of 100 mg curcumin/kg and 250 mg yucca extract/kg. A significant reduction in oocysts was observed in birds supplemented with combined additives (CU + YE) at days 37 compared to other treatments and at 42 days in relation to the CU treatment. At 42 days, the total bacterial counts for the CN and CU treatments were lower than the others. Birds fed the additive had lower numbers of leukocytes, lymphocytes, and heterophils than did those in the CN treatment. The highest levels of antioxidants in meat were observed in the treatments with the additives, together with lower levels of lipid peroxidation compared to the CN. The lowest protein oxidation was observed in the CU + YE treatment in relation to the other treatments. Lower total levels of saturated fatty acids (SFA) were observed in the CU treatment than in the CN. There were lower levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in the meat of birds in the YE treatment in relation to the others. Higher levels of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were observed in birds that consumed curcumin, individually and in combination with yucca extract. Taken together, the data suggest that curcumin and yucca extract are additives that can potentially replace conventional growth promoters; they improved bird health. Changes in the fatty acid profile of meat (increase in the percentage of omegas) are beneficial to the health of the consumer.

Esta investigación de campo se enfocó en hacer un estudio sobre la alimentación de las personas celiacas en El Salvador asociadas en ACELYSES. Se propuso un recetario de alimentos libres de gluten como fuente de carbohidratos complejos, a base de yuca, camote y otros vegetales inocuos para contribuir en la dieta de personas con intolerancia al gluten (celíacos). Para la elaboración de las 27 recetas fue necesario dar prioridad a la inocuidad y control de la contaminación cruzada, es decir, que los alimentos no hayan sido contaminados con gluten en ningún proceso. Otro aspecto importante fue analizar la trazabilidad de las materias primas que se deben utilizar para preparar los alimentos, así como los utensilios con los que se preparan, a fin de evitar riesgos a las personas con esta patología. Se realizaron pruebas sensoriales y hedónicas a través de focus group para obtener la opinión de aceptación de las recetas propuestas; igualmente, se elaboró una tabla con el contenido nutricional de cada receta, lo cual permitirá al usuario informarse del consumo de grasas, carbohidratos y otros minerales en beneficio de su salud.


This field research was focused on conducting a study of the diet of people with celiac disease in El Salvador associated with ACELYSES. A recipe book for gluten-free foods was proposed as a source of complex carbohydrates, based on yucca, sweet potato and other harmless vegetables to contribute to the diet of people with gluten intolerance (celiacs). For the preparation of the 27 recipes, it was necessary to give priority to safety and control of cross contamination, that means that the food had not been contaminated with gluten in any process. Another important aspect was to analyze the traceability of the raw materials that should be used to prepare food, as well as the utensils with which they are prepared, in order to avoid risks to people with this pathology. Sensory and hedonic tests were carried out through focus groups to obtain the opinion of acceptance of the proposed recipes; Likewise, a table was prepared with the nutritional content of each recipe, which can allow the user to find out about the consumption of other fats, carbohydrates and minerals for the benefit of their health.

Climatic fluctuations during the Pleistocene influenced the geographical distribution of plant species across the southern region of California. Following an integrative approach, we combined genetic data analysis with Environmental Niche Models (ENMs) to assess the historical range expansion of Yucca schidigera, a long-lived desert perennial native of the Baja California Peninsula. We genotyped 240 individuals with seven nuclear microsatellite to investigate genetic diversity distribution across 13 populations. Indeed, we used Environmental Niche Models to examine the changes on the distribution of suitable climatic conditions for this species during the LIG (~120 ka), LGM (~22 ka) and Mid Holocene (~6 ka). We detected high genetic diversity across Y. schidigera populations (AR = 9.94 ± 0.38 SE; Hexp = 0.791 ± 0.011 SE) with genetic variation decreasing significantly with latitude (allelic richness: R 2 = 0.38, P = 0.023; expected heterocigosity: R2 = 0.32, P = 0.042). We observed low, but significant genetic differentiation (FST = 0.0678; P < 0.001) which was consistent with the parapatric distribution of the three genetic groupings detected by the Bayesian clustering algorithm. The ENMs suggest that suitable habitat for this species increased since the LGM. Our results support a range expansion of Y. schidigera across northwestern Baja California during the late Quaternary. Genetic data suggest that colonization of the current distribution followed a southward directionality as suitable climatic conditions became widely available in this region. High genetic variation across our sample suggests large historic effective population sizes for this section of the geographical range.

Yucca schidigera is mainly distributed in southwestern US and the northern desert of Mexico. Its extract is widely used as a food additive for its antimicrobial activity. However, this antimicrobial activity is subject to significant variability across production lots. Yucca extracts are natural products and their composition is affected by their cultivation area and weather. Manufacturer deal with natural products such as food additives pay particularly close attention to quality control. In the present study, NMR metabolomics methods were used to screen the antimicrobial activity of yucca extracts. Yucca extracts were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) and categorized on a score plot of their 1H NMR spectral data according to their antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was also used to classify yucca extracts based on their antimicrobial activity. Classification using PCA and HCA was dependent upon saponin content, particularly that of schidigera-saponin A1 and D1, which was further confirmed by HPLC analysis of the yucca extracts. We demonstrated that NMR-based metabolomics is a potentially useful tool to use in combination with conventional quality control methods for yucca extracts used as food additives. We envisage this method as tool for initially screening the extracts prior to carrying out the officially recommended quality control tests.

Yuccas are plants adapted to arid and semiarid regions and have been used as source of food and raw materials and for ornamental purposes. Lately, the interest in this genus has grown due to the presence of potential useful compounds such as saponins and polyphenolics. However, they present very low reproductive rates and virtually all the plants used are wild individuals; as consequence, their natural populations have been depleted. We present an efficient method to establish in vitro cultures of Yucca species starting with seeds and then obtaining shoots from the seedling meristems using cytokinins and auxins. These shoots can be rooted and transferred to soil or can be used as explants for another multiplication cycle. Hence, it is necessary to acquire seeds just once to establish a large-scale micropropagation protocol.

The spherical agglomeration technique (SAT) has emerged as an innovative alternative for the removal of heavy metals from water at optimum levels of surfactant addition. This technique has achieved high removal efficiencies. In the present study, Yucca decipiens extracts were applied as the biosurfactant for the removal of heavy metals from groundwater of a mining community using SAT. Aqueous models were generated to explain the removal of copper and lead in solutions. It was possible to remove 99.96% and 99.62% respectively. The highest concentrations of copper and lead 209.5 and 2 mg L-1, respectively, were observed at a waterhole in the mining community. This sample was used to test the efficiency of SAT, using optimal conditions of the models. It was possible to remove 99.22% of copper and 91.50% of lead present in the groundwater. High concentrations of sodium and calcium were found. To reduce the residual sodium concentration, the pH was decreased from 11 to 9.5. 99.84% of copper and only 93.49% of lead were removed; the remaining concentrations did not exceed the limit of Mexican regulations (NOM-001-SEMARNAT-1996, 1996). It was demonstrated that the Yucca extracts are effective or the treatment of water with high concentrations of heavy metals under the conditions of SAT.

RESUMEN

A new plasmodiocarpic and sporocarpic species of myxomycete in the genus Physarum is described and illustrated. This new species appeared on decayed leaves and remains of succulent plants (Agave, Opuntia, Yucca) growing in arid zones. It differs from all other species in the genus in having polyhedral spores linked in chains like a string of beads, a unique feature within all known myxomycetes. Apart from detailed morphological data, partial sequences of both the small-subunit ribosomal RNA and elongation factor 1-alpha genes, generated from four isolates collected in two distant regions, i.e., Mexico and Canary Islands, are also provided in this study. Combined evidence supports the identity of the specimens under study as a new species.

Crassulacean acid metabolism plants have some morphological features, such as succulent and reduced leaves, thick cuticles, and sunken stomata that help them prevent excessive water loss and irradiation. As molecular constituents of these morphological adaptations to xeric environments, succulent plants produce a set of specific compounds such as complex polysaccharides, pigments, waxes, and terpenoids, to name a few, in addition to uncharacterized proteases. Since all these compounds interfere with the analysis of proteins by electrophoretic techniques, preparation of high quality samples from these sources represents a real challenge. The absence of adequate protocols for protein extraction has restrained the study of this class of plants at the molecular level. Here, we present a rapid and reliable protocol that could be accomplished in 1 h and applied to a broad range of plants with reproducible results. We were able to obtain well-resolved SDS/PAGE protein patterns in extracts from different members of the subfamilies Agavoideae (Agave, Yucca, Manfreda, and Furcraea), Nolinoideae (Dasylirion and Beucarnea), and the Cactaceae family. This method is based on the differential solubility of contaminants and proteins in the presence of acetone and pH-altered solutions. We speculate about the role of saponins and high molecular weight carbohydrates to produce electrophoretic-compatible samples. A modification of the basic protocol allowed the analysis of samples by bidimensional electrophoresis (2DE) for proteomic analysis. Furostanol glycoside 26-O-ß-glucosidase (an enzyme involved in steroid saponin synthesis) was successfully identified by mass spectrometry analysis and de novo sequencing of a 2DE spot from an Agave attenuata sample.

This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract and zeolite (Clinoptilolite) added to the diets for dogs and its effect on apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of diet components (dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, acid hydrolyzed fat, and energy) and urinary pH. Twenty-one adult Beagles, males and females, body weight mean of 12.5±1.5kg and four and a half years old, distributed in a completely randomized design with seven replicates per treatment within three experimental treatments: control (no addition of Yucca schidigera and zeolite), Yucca schidigera (375ppm) and zeolite (1%), administered in the encapsulated form of the supplement. The ADC of diet components and urinary pH were not affected by the inclusion of additives (P>0.05), except the ADC acid hydrolyzed fat showed reduction with Yucca schidigera supplementation compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). The addition of 375ppm of Yucca schidigera extract reduced the digestibility of dietary fat by dogs and both Yucca schidigera extract and zeolite did not affect the urinary pH of dogs.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inclusão do extrato de Yucca schidigera e da zeólita (Clinoptilolita) nas dietas para cães e seus efeitos sobre os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente (CDA) dos componentes da dieta (matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo em hidrólise ácida e energia) e no pH urinário. Foram utilizados 21 cães Beagles, machos e fêmeas, com peso médio de 12,5±1,5kg e quatro anos e meio de idade, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com sete repetições para cada um dos três tratamentos experimentais: controle (sem adição de Yucca schidigera e zeólita), Yucca schidigera (375ppm) e zeólita (1%), administrados na forma de suplemento encapsulado. Os CDA dos componentes da dieta e o pH urinário não foram afetados pela inclusão dos aditivos (P>0,05), exceto o CDA do extrato etéreo em hidrólise ácida, que reduziu com a suplementação de Yucca schidigera em comparação aos demais tratamentos (P<0,05). A adição de 375ppm de extrato de Yucca schidigera reduziu a digestibilidade da gordura dietética pelos cães e tanto a adição de Yucca schidigera como a de zeólita não alteraram o pH urinário.(AU)

This study evaluated the effects of inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) in two diets with different levels of crude protein (CP) for dogs on facal odour, nutrient digestibility, ammonia concentration in feces and hematological and serum biochemical profiles. Twenty adults Beagles were used, distributed in a randomized block design in a 2 × 4 factorial design (two diets, 25% and 34% CP, and four YSE levels: 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg) with five replicates, obtained during two experimental periods. The fecal odour reduced (P < 0.05) when 500 mg/kg of YSE was used in diets with higher CP. The inclusion of YSE reduced (P < 0.05) fecal ammonia, and the inclusion of 250 and 500 mg/kg YSE reduced intestinal gas. The inclusion of 750 mg/kg YSE increased the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and tended to increase the serum cholesterol concentration, regardless of the protein level of the diets. There was no effect on the digestibility of nutrients, fecal consistency, nitrogen balance and thickness of the intestinal wall. The inclusion of 500 mg/kg YSE is effective in reducing fecal odour in dogs receiving diets with 34% of CP. Regardless of the protein content, YSE reduces fecal ammonia, but may cause adverse effects if included at higher doses.

Human giardiosis is a public health problem in Mexico, where the national prevalence was estimated to be up to 68%. Misuse of antiprotozoal drugs may result in low effectiveness and undesirable side effects. Research on natural products is a good strategy for discovering more effective antiparasitic compounds. This study evaluated the antigiardial activity of extracts of Yucca baccata, which is native to northwestern Mexico. Forty-two gerbils (females) were weighed and orally inoculated with 5 × 10(6) Giardia trophozoites. Two gerbils were selected at random to confirm infection. Forty living gerbils were randomly allocated into 5 treatment groups (8 per group). Gerbils were randomly assigned to be treated with 24.4 mg/mL, 12.2 mg/mL, and 6.1 mg/mL of extracts, metronidazole (2 mg/mL) or PBS, which were intragastrically administered once per day for 3 days. Nine gerbils died during the study course. On day 10 postinfection, gerbils were euthanized and trophozoites were quantified. Yucca extracts reduced, albeit not significantly, the trophozoite counts in the duodenum segment. Only the high-extract concentration significantly reduced the trophozoite counts in the proximal segment and it was similar to that of metronidazole. Extracts of Y. baccata may represent an effective and natural therapeutic alternative for human giardiosis.

La investigación realizada evalúa el efecto del medio fermentativo y la concentración de azúcares iniciales sobre la producción de etanol en sistemas batch, cuando se emplean sacarificados de harina de yuca (Manihot esculenta), como fuente de carbono. El diseño experimental ejecutado fue de tipo bifactorial de efectos fijos y analiza la productividad de bioetanol en cuatro medios fermentativos diferentes, dos de los cuales se suplementaron con sacarificados de harina de yuca variedad Copiblanca. Las concentraciones de azúcares iniciales evaluadas en estos sustratos fueron de 250, 300 y 350 g/L. Estos tratamientos fermentativos fueron inoculados con una variedad etanologénica comercial de S. cerevisiae a una concentración de 0.05% (p/v). Las condiciones de proceso incluyeron un volumen final de 150 mL, una incubación a 35°C por 48 horas, agitación constante de 150 rpm y pH entre 4.0 y 4.5. Los sacarificados provenientes de esta variedad de yuca usados como fuente de carbono, mostraron ser excelentes sustratos para la obtención de etanol. Se evidenciaron aumentos de más del 500% en términos de productividad volumétrica con respecto al control experimental y se alcanzaron concentraciones finales de etanol del 14.7%v/v, asociadas a rendimientos producto/sustrato de 0,48 g/g y productividades de 2,4 g/L/h. Estos parámetros cinéticos fueron logrados con el medio fermentativo más simple evaluado, medio compuesto por los sacarificados como fuente de carbono y como única fuente nutricional, bajo concentraciones de azúcares iniciales de 250g/L; lo que demuestra la aptitud de estos sustratos para efectos de producción etanólica.


This research exposes the fermentative medium and initial sugar concentration effect on ethanol production in batch systems, when used glucose syrups derivatives of cassava (Manihot esculenta), as a carbon source. The experimental design was factorial and analyzes the productivity of bioethanol in four different fermentation media, two of which were supplemented with cassava flour sugared. The initial sugar concentrations tested on these substrates were 250, 300 and 350 g / L. These fermentative treatments were inoculated with a commercial ethanolic variety of S. cerevisiae at a concentration of 0.05% (w / v). The process conditions included a final volume of 150 mL, incubation at 35 ° C for 48 hours , constant stirring at 150 rpm and pH between 4.0 and 4.5. The saccharified from this cassava variety showed be excellent substrate for the bioethanol production, achieving increases of 550% in terms of volumetric productivity over the control experiment, the above, allowed us to achieve final concentrations of ethanol of 14.7% v / v, yields product / substrate of 0.5 g / g, and productivities of 2.4 g / L / h. Most interesting is that these kinetic parameters were achieved with the simplest fermentation medium evaluated, the mean was compound of saccharified as a carbon source and as a sole source of nutrition, and its initial concentration of sugars was 250g / L; the above shows the ability of these substrates for ethanol production purposes.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of adding Yucca schidigera and zeolite (Clinoptilolite) to feed (super premium and standard) for adult dogs on the apparent indigestibility coefficient of minerals. In the first assessment, 21 dogs were used, with average weight of 12.5kg±1.46 in seven treatments in two periods (super premium diet referred to as control and control with the addition of 125, 250, 375ppm Yucca schidigera and 0.5%, 0.75% and 1.0% zeolite). The second assessment was conducted with standard feed, using 21 experimental plots distributed in three treatments (standard diet referred to as control and control with the addition of 375ppm of Yucca schidigera and 1.0% zeolite). The additives did not affect the acceptability of feed and fecal characteristics in both assessments (P>0.05). With the exception of calcium, no minerals were affected by the inclusion of additives (P>0.05) in the experiment with super premium feed. In the assessment with standard feed, calcium as phosphorus and magnesium presented decreased excretion (P<0.05) with the inclusion of additives. It is possible to conclude that the inclusion of additives in the tested concentrations may interfere with the excretion of some minerals in the diet.(AU)


Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da inclusão de Yucca schidigera e zeólita (Clinoptilolita) em alimentos (super premium e standard) para cães adultos sobre o coeficiente de indigestibilidade aparente de minerais. No primeiro ensaio, foram utilizados 21 cães, com peso médio de 12,5kg±1,46, distribuídos em sete tratamentos em dois períodos (dieta super premium denominada controle e controle com adição de 125, 250, 375ppm de Yucca schidigera e 0,5%, 0,75% e 1,0% de zeólita). O segundo foi realizado com um alimento standard, utilizando-se 21 parcelas experimentais distribuídas em três tratamentos (dieta standard denominada controle e controle com adição de 375ppm de Yucca schidigera e 1,0% de zeólita). Os aditivos não afetaram a aceitabilidade do alimento e as características fecais nos dois ensaios (P>0,05). Com exceção do cálcio, nenhum mineral sofreu interferência da inclusão dos aditivos (P>0,05) no experimento com alimento super premium. No ensaio com alimento standard, tanto cálcio quanto fósforo e magnésio apresentaram redução na excreção (P<0,05) com a inclusão dos aditivos. La yuca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) es un cultivo de alta importancia en países tropicales. La transformación genética de yuca ha sido posible desde hace 15 años mediante la producción que callo embriogénico friable (CEF) a partir de embriones somáticos. En el presente trabajo se evalúan la inducción de embriones somáticos usando tres diferentes auxinas sintéticas y la producción de CEF a partir de éstos en los cultivares de yuca SG107-35 y BRA685. Estos cultivares son resistentes a la bacteriosis vascular de yuca cuyo agente causal es Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis, una de las principales limitantes del cultivo. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que en ambos cultivares la hormona Picloram a una concentración de 12 mg/l fue más eficiente que 2,4-D y Dicamba para producir embriones somáticos. Adicionalmente se consiguió la producción de CEF y la regeneración de plantas mediante embriogénesis somática en el cultivar BRA685. Los resultados del presente trabajo son importantes para evaluar la transformabilidad de distintos cultivares de yuca. Actualmente este número es bastante reducido principalmente porque la producción de CEF es fuertemente influenciada por el genotipo. Por tal razón solo se transforma de manera rutinaria y eficiente en el cultivar 60444. La posibilidad de transformación de distintos cultivares de yuca permitirá explotar la enorme variabilidad del cultivo, invitándonos a aumentar los esfuerzos para mejorar y universalizar los protocolos de transformación de yuca.


The cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) crop has a very important role as a food, feed and a raw material in developing countries; therefore it is a priority to develop technologies oriented to the solution of problems and agronomic improvement of the crop. The genetic transformation of cassava was developed 15 years ago by producing friable embryogenic callus (FEC) from somatic embryos as target tissue for transformation. In the present work we evaluated the induction of somatic embryos by using three different synthetic auxins and the production of FEC from both SG107-35 and BRA685 cassava cultivars; both are resistant to cassava bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis, the most important bacterial disease affecting the crop. Our results showed that in both cultivars gave rise to somatic embryos in media containing Picloram at a concentration of 12 mg/l being more efficient than using 2,4-D or Dicamba. Additionally the cultivar BRA685 produced regenerative FEC giving rise to plants through somatic embryogenesis. However compared to the model cultivar 60444, FEC production was greatly lower. This work shows new efforts to increase the number of transformable cultivars of cassava and take advantage of the enormous genetic variability of the crop.

Pregelatinized starch is widely used as a pharmaceutical aid, especially as a filler-binder. It is known that the tableting performance of excipients could be affected by their source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the powder and tableting properties of pregelatinized starches obtained from yucca, corn and rice and compare those properties with those of Starch 1500. This material had the lowest particle size, and porosity and largest density and best flow. However, yucca starch and corn starch showed an irregular granule morphology, better compactibility and compressibility than Starch 1500. Their onset of plastic deformation and their strain rate sensitivity was comparable to that of Starch 1500. These two materials showed compact disintegration slower that Starch 1500. Conversely, rice starch showed a high elasticity, and friability, low compactibility, which are undesirable for direct compression. This study demonstrated the potential use of pregelatinized starches, especially those obtained from yucca and corn as direct compression filler-binders.
