RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy of six intraoral scanners in two different partially edentulous maxillary models and to evaluate the effect of scanning sequence on accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary Kennedy Class I and Class IV situations were used as reference models. The reference datasets were obtained by scanning the models using a highly accurate industrial scanner (ATOS Core 80, GOM). The following six intraoral scanners were evaluated: Trios 3 (3Shape), iTero Element 2 (Align Technology), Emerald (Planmeca), CEREC Omnicam (Dentsply Sirona), CEREC Primescan (Dentsply Sirona), and Virtuo Vivo (Dental Wings). A total of 120 scans from both models were obtained using the six intraoral scanners and divided into two groups based on scanning sequence. Accuracy was evaluated by deviation analysis using 3D image processing software (Geomagic Studio 12, 3D Systems). Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed (P ≤ .05) for statistical analysis. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the accuracy of digital impressions among intraoral scanners and scanning sequences. The trueness of the Trios scanner and the precision of the Trios, Primescan, and iTero scanners were significantly higher than for the other scanners. The Emerald had the lowest accuracy among the six intraoral scanners tested. Accuracy was affected by scanning sequence when using the Virtuo Vivo, Emerald, Primescan, and iTero. CONCLUSION: In Kennedy Class I and Class IV partially edentulous cases, it is useful to consider that the intraoral scanner used may affect the accuracy of the digital impression.

RESUMEN

Excessively worn dentition is a clinical condition that mainly impacts the esthetic appearance of patients. In many cases, this may even extend to affect their psychologic condition and social interaction, and consequently reduce their quality of life. The treatment steps of such cases involve comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis, a rigid rehabilitation plan, and a careful and well-structured treatment execution. To facilitate long-term success, patient compliance and a strict recall program should be implemented. The case report presented in this article provides a step-by-step description of the treatment of an excessively worn dentition with the aid of the digital workflow.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of the nutritional status of older individuals have used measures such as plasma vitamin and mineral levels, which can be difficult to interpret. The relationship between nutrition and dentition has been limited to studying exposures such as the number of posterior occluding pairs of teeth, edentulousness, and the number of natural teeth. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between dentition status and nutritional status in a national survey of older New Zealanders living in aged residential care facilities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Secondary analysis of clinical oral status and nutrition data collected in 2012 in New Zealand's Older People's Oral Health Survey. The validated Mini Nutritional Assessment short format was used to categorize participants as "normal nutritional status," "at risk of malnutrition" or "malnourished." RESULTS: Just under half of older New Zealanders living in aged residential care facilities were classified as either at risk of malnutrition or malnourished (with about one in sixteen in the latter category). The prevalence of malnutrition was higher among those in hospital-level and psychogeriatric-level care, as well as in those of high socioeconomic status. Individuals who were at risk of malnutrition had the most untreated dental caries and untreated coronal caries. Relative to their counterparts in nursing-home-level care, dentate individuals in hospital-level care were 2.4 times-and those in psychogeriatric-level care were 2.8 times-as likely to be malnourished or at risk of it. CONCLUSIONS: Just under half of the New Zealanders living in aged residential care were at risk of malnutrition or were malnourished. Greater experience of untreated dental caries was associated with a higher rate of being malnourished or at risk of it. Poorer cognitive function and greater dependency were important risk indicators for malnutrition.

RESUMEN

Összefoglaló. Az Axenfeld-Rieger-szindróma ritka betegség. A közlemény bemutatja a klinikai megjelenési formáit, a diagnosztikus és terápiás lehetoségeket. A szemgolyó elülso szegmentumát érinto fejlodési rendellenességek vizsgálata a hagyományos biomikroszkópos vizsgálat mellett digitális kamerával is történhet, mely a csarnokzugi képleteket nagy nagyításban, éles képet mutatva tudja megjeleníteni. A szemnyomást a gyermek kooperációjának függvényében többféle módon mérhetjük. Orv Hetil. 2021; 162(5): 192-199. Summary. Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome is a rare disease. Our paper presents its clinical manifestations, diagnostic and therapeutic options. Due to maxillary hypoplasia and dental developmental anomalies, bidirectional panoramic radiography is required. Multi-stage dental conservative and restorative treatment can provide better results. In addition to traditional biomicroscopic examination, developmental abnormalities affecting the anterior segment of the eye can also be examined with a digital camera, which can display the angle of the anterior chamber at high magnification, with a sharp image. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy are also suitable for the examination and display of developmental abnormalities and drainage shunt tubes. Intraocular pressure can be measured in several ways depending on the child's cooperation. Due to the irregular shape of the pupil, often with only a slit aperture, and an increase in intraocular pressure, ophthalmic intervention may be required. The pupilloplasty is important preventing amblyopia prevention and early glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, shunt implantation) helps to preserve visual function. Eye surgeries need to be performed under anaesthesia, sometimes at few months of age. Both diagnosis and treatment require a multidisciplinary approach. The joint work of a paediatrician, geneticist, cardiologist, dental-oral surgeon and paediatric ophthalmologist may provide a satisfactory result. Orv Hetil. 2021; 162(5): 192-199.

Purpose: The aim of the present study is to assess the relation between vertical malocclusions with palatal index and palatal height. Materials and Methods: Transversal study. The sample consisted in 134 stone models within mixed dentition, 81 females and 53 males, they were convenience selected and obtained from the pediatric and orthodontic dentistry medical center at the National School for Superior Studies Unit León since 2014 to 2018. The stone models were divided into three categories according to their kind of occlusion: open bite (37), deep bite (32) and normal bite (65). Palatal width and height were measure by using a digital caliper. Subsequently the palatal index was obtained and it was related with the parameters exposed by Korkhaus using the Spearman statistical test. Results: The Spearman statistical test indicated there is no a clearly relationship between palatal index values exposed by Korkhaus with the presence of vertical malocclusions and in the same way there is no a relationship between palatal height and vertical malocclusions. Conclusions: The result obtained by using the palatal index was no able to indicate an agreement with Korkhaus parameters. Probably this disagreement was due to the constant changes that occur during the period of the mixed dentition.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim: The purpose of the research was to increase the efficiency of treatment at patients with dentition defects and functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: We examined 140 patients aged from 25 to 65 years with functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint, analysed there diagnostic models in the articulator and 3D scanner, used radiographic methods of examination and condylography. RESULTS: Results: The results of the conducted studies showed that in the 1st group, the biomechanical parameters of temporomandibular joint movements before treatment were significantly lower: 6,4 ± 0,2 mm and 6,8 ± 0,2 mm for right and left temporomandibular joint during protrusion movements; 7,8 ± 0,1 mm and 7,9 ± 0,2 mm during vertical movements; 6,7 ± 0,1 mm and 6,5 ± 0,2 mm during transversal movements. After 12 month of complex and prosthetic treatment with a help of non-removable dentures the magnitude of movements remains at the achieved level at all excursions. As a result, proposed by us comprehensive treatment of functional disorders of the temporomandibular joint is carried out in stages. The proposed design of an individual tire makes it possible to gradually increase the bite height and perfectly forms the occlusal ratio. After 6 and 12 months of the proposed treatment, we have found that the indicators of vertical and protrusion movements of articular heads at patients of 2nd group were significantly better than before treatment. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The proposed design of an individual tire makes it possible to gradually increase the bite height and perfectly forms the occlusal ratio.

RESUMEN

From a sample of 108 periodontally healthy volunteers with different combinations of morphometric data related to maxillary central anterior teeth and the surrounding soft tissues, this article aims to categorize gingival phenotypes according to tooth and gingival parameters, as well as assess the relationships between tooth shape and gingival characteristics, such as the papillary height (PH) and faciolingual thickness (FLT) of the papilla base. The periodontal phenotypes of 108 volunteers were confirmed using the periodontal probe transmission method for Kan classification. The FLT, PH, and the crown width to crown length (CW/CL) ratio for maxillary anterior teeth were measured. K-clustering was used to classify the anterior tooth shape into three groups: triangular, square, and compound. The mean CW/CL ratio for the maxillary anterior tooth position of the thick phenotype was greater than that of the thin phenotype. The PH and FLT for the maxillary anterior interdental papillae were greater for the thin phenotype group than for the thick phenotype group. A negative correlation was observed between the CW/CL ratio and both PH and FLT (P < .05 for both). However, a significant positive correlation was observed between FLT and PH. CW/CL ratio, FLT, and PH were all associated with the gingival phenotype with significant statistical correlations (P < .05 for all). Triangular teeth were correlated with scallop-shaped gingiva in the faciolingual area, while square teeth were associated with a flat gingiva.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This sub-analysis of our multicenter trial was to assess the long-term periodontal health (PH) of teeth, esthetically reshaped by means of direct composite buildups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 198 patients who received 667 direct composite buildups on 585 treated teeth (TT) between 01/2001 and 12/2013 were included. PH was assessed for each TT and for an untreated control tooth (CT) by recording the pocket probing depths (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), and Turesky's modification of the Quigley Hein plaque index (PI). Statistical analysis was performed using the two-sample Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. Regression models were performed to check for associations between PH and patients' age, gender, age of the buildups, enlargement range, jaw, and tooth type. The level of significance was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: PI scores were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in TT (1.60 ± 0.81) than in CT (1.41 ± 0.81). Differences between TT and CT regarding PPD (TT: 2.14 ± 0.56/CT: 2.18 ± 0.56), CAL (TT: 2.34 ± 1.05/CT: 2.33 ± 0.92), and SBI (TT: 0.41 ± 0.60/CT: 0.41 ± 0.65) were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The enlargement range of the TT and the tooth type were not associated with PH. Male patients had significantly higher PPDs, CAL, and SBI values than did female patients. CAL and SBI values increased over time for both the TT and CT. CAL, SBI, and PI values were significantly higher in the mandible and the PPD values in the maxilla. CONCLUSION: Direct composite buildups made for reshaping, change of color or position of teeth did not impair PH in the long term.

RESUMEN

The upper and lower tooth-bearing jaws of the filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) were scanned using a micro-CT system in order to address the existing gaps between the traditional pictures of the morphology and histology. 2D tomograms, reconstructed 3D models and virtual dissection were employed to examine and evaluate the in situ geometry of tooth implantation and the mode of tooth attachment both separately and collectively. No distinct sockets comparable to those in mammals were evident, but shallow depressions were observed in the premaxillary and the dentary. The opening of the tooth pulp cavity was not simply oriented towards the apparent tooth base in a direction opposite to the tooth apex. The opening was distorted basoposteriorly or basoanteriorly depending on the position of the tooth, and the edge of the pulp cavity opening was barely ankylosed; i.e. the sites of pleurodont ankylosis along the basoposterior or basoanterior edge of the opening appeared to closely match the contour of the shallow depression in the bone. These 3D findings appear to be very informative when considering the phylogeny of tooth attachment, suggesting that micro-CT would be a useful modality concurrent with or in advance of histological investigations.

RESUMEN

Aim: To determine the relationship between Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) with Dentition Status and Treatment need among 12 year old school children of Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad. Patients and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out among 990 private school children aged 12 years old in Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad city. OHRQoL was assessed by 16-item Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14), and Oral hygiene was evaluated using Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), and Dentition status and Treatment need. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Study population proportions and mean scores were compared using Chi-square test, Student t- test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Spearman's analysis was done to determine correlation between CPQ11-14and its domain scores with OHI-S and Dentition status and Treatment Need based on gender. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In the present study, all domains of CPQ11-14i.e., Oral Symptoms (OS) (3.27 ± 2.5; P = 0.0001), Functional Limitation (FL) (1.48 ± 2.1; P = 0.02), Emotional Wellbeing (EW) (1.83 ± 2.5; P = 0.02) and Social Wellbeing (SW) (1.25 ± 2.02; P = 0.0002) showed significant gender difference, with males having higher mean score compared to females. The majority of the study population was caries free 789 (79.7%). In addition, the dental caries experience among males and females was around 20% (p = 0.92). When total mean DMFT and DT scores were compared based on gender, no statistically significant difference was noted though females showed higher mean score. Conclusion: The study results indicate that, there is a correlation between oral hygiene status and dentition status with quality of life.

RESUMEN

The dentitions of extant fishes and land vertebrates vary in both pattern and type of tooth replacement. It has been argued that the common ancestral condition likely resembles the nonmarginal, radially arranged tooth files of arthrodires, an early group of armoured fishes. We used synchrotron microtomography to describe the fossil dentitions of so-called acanthothoracids, the most phylogenetically basal jawed vertebrates with teeth, belonging to the genera Radotina, Kosoraspis, and Tlamaspis (from the Early Devonian of the Czech Republic). Their dentitions differ fundamentally from those of arthrodires; they are marginal, carried by a cheekbone or a series of short dermal bones along the jaw edges, and teeth are added lingually as is the case in many chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fishes) and osteichthyans (bony fishes and tetrapods). We propose these characteristics as ancestral for all jawed vertebrates.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical effects of oral implant restoration in patients with dentition defects and the its impact on tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) levels in gingival crevicular fluid. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with dentition defects from May 2017 to August 1919 in People's Hospital of Shanghai Pudong District were enrolled and randomly divided into control group (n=42) and experimental group (n=42). Patients in the control group were repaired by routine methods, while those in the experimental group were treated with oral implant restoration. The effect of restoration was evaluated 6 months after treatment. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6 in the gingival crevicular fluid and dental function were compared between the 2 groups. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 software package. RESULTS: The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in the experimental group and the control group after treatment were significantly higher than those before treatment (P<0.05). The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group 6 months after treatment (P<0.05). The scores of dental function in the experimental group and the control group were significantly higher than those before treatment (P<0.05). The scores of retention, speech, chewing and aesthetics of the experimental group 6 months after treatment were significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05). The incidence of infection, pricking, post and core loosing and teeth missing in the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In the treatment of patients with dentition defects, implant restoration has little effect on the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in gingival crevicular fluid, which is helpful to improve dental function and reduce the incidence of postoperative complications. Therefore, it is worthwhile to be popularized in clinical application.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To research and develop a novel virtual articulator system (the PN-300) based on computer binocular vision, raster scanning, and simulation technology and to conduct a preliminary evaluation of its accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two digital cameras were used to build the trajectory-tracking part of the virtual articulator system, and cameras combined with a projection module were used to form the scanning part of the system. The most prominent feature of the PN-300 is its ability to simultaneously obtain the 3D data of the subject's teeth and the movement trajectory of the mandible relative to the maxilla. The PN-300 recorded the linear, circular, and rectangular quadrilateral movements of a high-accuracy 3D electronic translation stage. The accuracy of measurement of the inclination of incisal guidance derived from the PN-300 based on the PROTAR evo7 articulator was also estimated. RESULTS: The measurement error was below 100 µm for the linear and circular movements, and the angle error was within 0.2 degrees for the rectangular quadrilateral movements. The error of inclination of protrusive incisal guidance was 1.51 ± 0.68 degrees, and for incisal guidance was 0.82 ± 0.55 degrees. Trajectories and incisal 3D data obtained by the PN-300 were combined with data from plaster models and CBCT to simulate mandibular movement and to calculate the trajectories of the condyle. CONCLUSION: The PN-300 achieved a good accuracy for recording mandibular movement and can be expected to calculate the movement of the condyle.

RESUMEN

This article addresses facts and fallacies about managing worn teeth and challenges some traditional concepts and beliefs about occlusion. Whilst it is accepted that many of the historic occlusal concepts were well intended, closer examination reveals that many were unnecessarily destructive of sound tooth tissues and did not deliver all of their purported benefits. Those fallacies make them less appropriate in the litigious environment of contemporary dental practice. This paper discusses the disadvantages of 'subtractive' dental procedures for the management of tooth wear, and highlights the benefits of proven minimally destructive 'additive' techniques.
