RESUMEN

Objective: The study's purpose has been to analyze the visibility of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto [University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing], attached to the Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto [Ribeirão Preto Medical School], at the moment of its legal creation, in four local newspapers. Method: This is a historical perspective research, in which the Micro History and the notions of Pierre Bourdieu's journalistic field were taken as guidelines. Results: It was found 14 newspaper articles on the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing and/or nursing/nurse. Conclusion: There was visibility of the institution in the newspapers, at the moment of its legal creation, although it was not the center topic of any news. The institution's importance is presented in an ambivalent way; the one that adds scientific capital or that one which is under the medicine's guidance. This may be related to the fact that its first director and creator was still not present in the city at the time of the study

RESUMEN

During World War Two, a group of Dutch nurses chose to join the Nederlandse Ambulance ('Easternfront Ambulance'), a controversial though currently relatively unknown field hospital for the eastern front. In doing so, they supported the German war effort. This case study elaborates on the motives of these women to make a choice that was ultimately determined as 'wrong', by emphasising their unique gender role of nurse in the public sphere. By providing an insight into a relatively small group of 'wrong' women, this article aims to act as a call for further research into the gender context of limitations and opportunities of Dutch women during the German occupation. These nurses appear to have had various intentional and unintentional motives for enlisting. Nearly all of them later claimed they had pursued a 'calling'. They had all been Nazi or Nationalist Socialist Movement in the Netherlands sympathisers and they had all enjoyed material benefits due to their position with the field hospital. In a few cases, it seems they had longed for interaction with soldiers, or men in general, and sometimes they had simply craved for an adventurous life far from home.

RESUMEN

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the famous "lady with the lamp," is indeed the world's most well-known nurse. In our times, now for nearly six decades, the same environmental and social issues that were of concern to Nightingale are understood as key factors in achieving global development and global health. In Nightingale's footsteps, Nurse Coach leaders and all nurses are 21st century Nightingales who are coaching, informing, and educating for healthy people to be living on a healthy planet.

RESUMEN

: By the 1920s, Lillian Wald's model of care, with nurses working side by side with social workers at the intersection of medicine and society, had become an important component of the U.S. health care system. Over subsequent decades, however, a confluence of historic forces resulted in its marginalization. Today, people are recognizing that medical cures alone, although important, will not reduce the epidemic of diseases of despair or the growing challenges involved in achieving health equity. Wald's approach, extended to a broader range of settings in which nurses work today, could be the missing ingredient. To provide background for the National Academy of Medicine Committee on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030, as it develops its follow-up to the Institute of Medicine's 2010 Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation commissioned a report on nursing's historic role in advancing health. This article summarizes that report, which can be found in its entirety at www.rwjf.org/content/dam/farm/reports/reports/2019/rwjf452706.

In October 1859 Spain enters into war with Morocco and mobilizes all the troops of the Army, leaving many military installations without personnel. Therefore, the O'Donnell government creates the Workers' Corps, formed by a replacement troop, which will be responsible for auxiliary duties and sanitary functions in military hospitals. Objectives: To make known the work done by the nurses of the company of workers of the Military Administration according to the Instruction that regulate this trade. Show the categories of hospital nurses and define their administrative tasks and care for the sick. Material and Methods: Historical study conducted from the analysis of the "Instruction for military administration workers as nurses in military hospitals", document regulated the work of the different offices that were in a military hospital, focusing on the functions of the senior nurse, servant nurse and ward warden. Results: The Instruction was divided into fifteen chapters, and in each one of them the norms of performance of the different existing trades in a military hospital were established. In chapters I, II and III, referring to nursing trades, their functions of supervision and management as well as care of the sick are established. Conclusions: This is a regulation of the work of nurses, who exercised the tasks assignable to the current Chiefs of Nursing and Supervisors, with considerable training for the time in administrative tasks and with adequate qualities for the care of the sick and injured

RESUMEN

: Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. This December 1951 article is a patient's account of her struggle to learn how to care for her colostomy. Despite a three-and-a-half-week hospital stay, she received no practical guidance in colostomy care. "My doctor assured me that all I would need to do after I got home would be to get up a half hour earlier to irrigate the colostomy," she writes. "The nurses were kind, cheerful, and patient, but they seldom referred to my colostomy." It took two years "of trial and error, of fear and anxiety" for the patient to figure out how to manage her colostomy. This woman's experience highlighted the need for expert guidance for people with ostomies. Unfortunately, it was 1958 before the first known ostomy specialist began work. The American Association of Enterostomal Therapists, the precursor of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society, was formed in 1968.This article reminds us, once again, of the importance of patient education and support after life-changing surgery. For nurses who are not ostomy specialists, "Stoma and Peristomal Skin Care: A Clinical Review" in this issue offers an update on stoma care.

AJN noted her passing in the September 1910 issue and covered her August 20 funeral in the October issue. That account, "Final Services for Florence Nightingale," describes the flowers and wreaths that accumulated at both the church and the Nightingale tomb. A special note was made of the wreath from Stella Forster, a seven-year-old girl, who sent along this message: "Please may my wreath be put with the other flowers. I picked the heather and made it myself, because I love her so."It had been Nightingale's wish to have a simple burial. Nevertheless, as her small procession passed Buckingham Palace and Wellington Barracks, "the guards turned out and the sentries presented arms." Nightingale might have been surprised to learn that in the United States, beginning in 1954, her birthday would be celebrated as the centerpiece of Nurses Week each year.
