RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Use of EMDR in work with addicts is described mainly through case studies, and Hase, Schallmayer and Sack (2008) examined experimentally effect of EMDR in the treatment of alcohol addicts and found a significant decrease of cravings for addicts who had , next to the standard treatment, also EMDR therapy, compared to a group that had only standard treatment. To examine efficiency of EMDR therapy in the treatment of opiates addicts. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In research is applied group experimental scheme with a control group and measurement before and after treatment and six months after treatment. The control group had standard treatment, and the experimental group had a standard treatment plus EMDR treatment, ie, four sessions of EMDR treatment. The session lasts 60 minutes. In the research following instruments were applied: Pompidou, DUDIT-E, LDQ, OCDS, DASS 21 Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. In the processing of preliminary results, descriptive statistics is used. RESULTS: The research began on September 8, 2017. Until October 2018, 24 participants were included. Results of measurements for 20 participants were presented (10 from the control and 10 from the experimental group). In abstract is used CravEx Michal Hase protocol. The results indicate a higher number of visits to the therapeutic community in the experimental group, increase of self-esteem in both groups but a larger range in the experimental group, a higher self-evaluation of addiction in an experimental group, decrease in PAS attractiveness for both groups but slightly better results in the experimental group, especially in the self-assessment of the negative effects of PAS, as well as a larger increase in the motivational index of the experimental group at another measurement. CONCLUSION: Preliminary results indicate the effects of EMDR use, but since measures of descriptive statistics were used and as a small sample, there should be caution with the results.

RESUMEN

The year 2019 saw nursing science become an official discipline in France, following the academization process initiated in 2009. Although nurses did not wait for this breakthrough to embark on doctoral-level courses, the absence of a dedicated academic nursing pathway has meant that it has not been possible to gain an overall picture of the theses written by nurses in French universities. The aim of this contribution is to compile an inventory of these theses by identifying the disciplinary fields in which the nurses defended them, as well as the preferred methodological approaches adopted. Following a computerized search using various databases, 132 theses were identified spanning a forty-year period, with a significant increase over the last ten years. Eighty-four percent of these doctoral theses were defended in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences, with a very large proportion in education sciences. Qualitative methods were preferred, with investigations that used interviews. The number of theses in the biological and health sciences has seen a recent increase. This inventory provides a benchmark for the doctoral output of nurses at a pivotal point in their professional history.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The validity of the methods used to locate theses published in scientific journals is uncertain. Objective: To compare the effectiveness and efficiency of different methods (including our proposal) to locate theses published in indexed scientific journals. Material and Methods: A descriptive observational study was made. Five methods ("A", "B", "C", "D", "E") used to locate published theses were identified and our proposal was developed (method "F"). The six methods and their strategies were tested using five theses that have already been published. Effectiveness was evaluated through the analysis of the relationship between (published theses / total of theses), efficiency (published theses / [number of tests] x [total of theses]) and relative position of the search (order in which the thesis was located / total results from the search). Results: The most effective and efficient methods were: "F" (1 and 0.5) and "D" (1 and 0.5), followed by the "B" method (0.8 and 0.2). The methods with the lowest effectiveness and efficiency were: methods "A" (0.6 and 0.15), "C" (0.6 and 0.12) and "E" (0.2 and 0.01). In addition, the relative position for each strategy of the "F" method was lower than the strategies of the "D" method. Conclusions: The majority of search methods were less frequent and less efficient, being our proposal one of the most specific methods to locate theses published in scientific journals(AU)

RESUMEN

The research requirement for South African specialist registration offers opportunities and challenges. For some clinicians it may spark a lifelong interest in clinical investigation, while for many others it may provide a potential publication opportunity. Integrating the specific requirements of an MMed mini-dissertation with those of standard medical publications can be difficult for first-time authors and their supervisors; published guidance caters to full-length laboratory Master's or doctoral research. We suggest that research is more likely to be publishable if it is locally relevant, has a clear clinical message and is coherently presented.

RESUMEN

Maximising research productivity is a major focus for universities world-wide. Graduate research programs are an important driver of research outputs. Choosing students with the greatest likelihood of success is considered a key part of improving research outcomes. There has been little empirical investigation of what factors drive the outcomes from a student's PhD and whether ranking procedures are effective in student selection. Here we show that, the research environment had a decisive influence: students who conducted research in one of the University's priority research areas and who had experienced, research-intensive, supervisors had significantly better outcomes from their PhD in terms of number of manuscripts published, citations, average impact factor of journals published in, and reduced attrition rates. In contrast, students' previous academic outcomes and research training was unrelated to outcomes. Furthermore, students who received a scholarship to support their studies generated significantly more publications in higher impact journals, their work was cited more often and they were less likely to withdraw from their PhD. The findings suggest that experienced supervisors researching in a priority research area facilitate PhD student productivity. The findings question the utility of assigning PhD scholarships solely on the basis of student academic merit, once minimum entry requirements are met. Given that citations, publication numbers and publications in higher ranked journals drive university rankings, and that publications from PhD student contribute approximately one-third of all research outputs from universities, strengthening research infrastructure and supervision teams may be more important considerations for maximising the contribution of PhD students to a university's international standing.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The recent amendment to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) Form 57 MED allows specialist registration on publication of the compulsory MMed research assignment in an accredited journal. No data exist on the conversion rate of MMed dissertations to publication. OBJECTIVES: To establish conversion rates of MMed dissertations to accredited publications. Associated variables arising from the publishing exercise were also investigated. METHODS: A total of 309 MMed dissertations, submitted between 1996 and 2017, were downloaded from the public domain. Each dissertation was recorded as to format, submission year, awarding university and clinical discipline. Electronic searches determined publication outcomes. Journal title, accreditation status, year of publication, registrar position on author ranking and publication type were extracted for each output. Descriptive analysis was undertaken and, where appropriate, Fisher's exact test at p>0.05 was used to establish statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 116 dissertations were published at an overall conversion rate of 37.5%, culminating in 136 outputs. Publication-ready dissertations had a significantly higher conversion rate (60.3%) than monographs (30.5%) (p>0.0001). All but 6 of the 80 publishing journals were accredited. SAMJ was the journal of choice for 13% of papers. The registrar was the first author in the majority of publications. In the case of monographs, 66% were published after dissertation submission compared with 50% of publication-ready formats. CONCLUSIONS: Conversion of the South African MMed dissertation into a journal-accredited scientific article was achieved in 60.3% of publication-ready-format submissions, suggesting that the HPCSA amendment facilitating specialist registration is attainable. Retrospective reviews of dissertations provide valuable insights to improve understanding of the contentious issue of the registrar research requirement that permits specialist registration.

Nowadays, there are, surprisingly, many opportunities for research in the field of radiology, and these are accessible at any level. Thanks to radiological information systems and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), a huge number of images and cases are available. Nevertheless, the daily workload and the lack of resources sometimes limit the advance of radiologic research. One of the routes of access is doctoral programs. The Bologna process has resulted in significant changes in the organization and in the prerequisites for doctoral theses. The new situation can be confusing for those who are further removed from the university. Given that many radiologists undertake their doctoral theses once their careers are well established, unfamiliarity with the new system can represent an added difficulty. This article aims to review the basic regulations that govern doctoral programs nowadays and to provide some useful advice for potential doctoral students

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to discuss the paths taken by Brazilian Nursing in the development of terminological subsets of the International Classification for Nursing Practice. METHOD: documentary research, carried out in master's dissertations and doctoral theses, which developed terminological subsets, available at the Bank of Doctoral Theses and Master's Dissertations of the Under-graduation Personnel Improvement Coordination. The variables were analyzed were institution, year; academic level, type of health service, methodological approach, clientele, theoretical reference, validation of terms, cross mapping, modeling of new concepts, validation of statements, method used for elaboration, term collection, finalization and dissemination. RESULTS: 124 doctoral theses and master's dissertations were found, 91 were excluded and 33 were included, 23 (69.70%) of which were master's dissertations, with the highest production in 2014 (n=10; 30.30%), with emphasis on the Northeast (36.36%); the 'Primary Care' scenario, with six studies (18.18%); and the predominant clientele was cancer patients. As for the methodological characteristics, in 96% of the studies, the quantitative approach was used; in 2%, a qualitative approach; and 2% associated the quantitative and qualitative approaches. As for the type of study, 60% were methodological and 24% descriptive-exploratory, with the Horta model being the most used (36%). CONCLUSION: the paths are successful, yet still permeated by weaknesses in the validations and potentialities to standardize the language.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nurse researchers need skills to secure external funding; therefore, we created a grant writing workshop for PhD students focused on the F31 Individual Fellowship and R36 Dissertation Grant. PURPOSE: Describe a nursing PhD program federal grant writing workshop and present participant impressions and outcomes. METHODS: We designed a three half-day workshop covering essential aspects of grant writing combined with mentor participation and follow-up. We assessed participant satisfaction in evaluations, subsequent grant submissions, project implementation, and time from PhD program entry to completion. FINDINGS: Evaluations were overwhelmingly positive. Seventeen of 29 (58.6%) participants submitted 21 applications; five (23.8%) were funded. The majority (75.0%) conducted the proposed dissertation project regardless of funding. Writing and submitting a grant did not increase time to program completion. DISCUSSION: The workshop efficiently supports PhD students' dissertation research. Timing and mentor participation are key for success. We recommend schools of nursing implement PhD program grant writing workshops.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the data gathering technological tools used in nursing theses on violence from the view of "technological toolboxes". METHOD: It is a descriptive and documental study, with a qualitative approach, based on Thesis available in the last ten volumes of the Catalogue of Theses and Dissertations of the Center of Nursing Studies and Research (CEPEn). Documents presenting technological tools during the data gathering of its studies were selected, and then classified using "technological toolboxes" according to Merhy. RESULTS: 30 theses were selected, data gathering tools were classified in "technological toolboxes" as lightweight, light-hard, and hard technologies, with uniformity in most researches (23; 76.6%). CONCLUSION: Given it is a multifaced phenomenon, violence demands a deeper view, using the most diverse tools for its proper understanding and classification.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Accelerated growth in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs has mandated the need for innovative strategies for doctoral students to defend their final scholarly work while protecting the integrity and rigor of the experience. METHOD: A poster defense strategy was implemented and evaluated via a faculty focus group and a Likert-scale survey. Sessions highlighting eight projects each were scheduled at 75-minute intervals allowing for both informal poster viewing and formal audience questioning facilitated by a moderator. Evaluation of the event trended positive, with focus group members celebrating the energy around each session, noting the significant increase in audience size compared to past podium defenses. CONCLUSION: Evaluators who attended previous DNP project defenses all indicated that the large venue poster session approach was just as or more effective than previous methods. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The biography of Colonel Hermann Schwyter, equine surgeon of the Swiss Army from 1928 to 1937, and the history of training of farriers in Switzerland since the 18th century are presented. Hermann Schwyters dissertation examined the changes of equine hoof confirmation as a result of standing and gait in approximately 2,000 horses and numerous anatomical specimens. He defines the foot placement, describes possible variations, their causes and effects. Significant is also his study of the compression pathology in horses and mules. His recommendations are still valid today. The present article refers to his authored textbook "The Swiss military farrier" and to his established journal, which is bearing the same title.

Two hundred thirty-two responses were obtained, mostly from pharmacists and medical doctors working in the healthcare sector of activity. The average rating was very high, both in terms of the perceived usefulness of the monographs (8.92 out of 10), as well as the suitability of these to their professional needs (8.28). The monograph sections that arouse most interest are the clinical aspects and the pharmacological actions and, to a lesser extent, those of definition and constituents and bibliographic references. Respondents believe that the extent of the monographs is appropriate. ESCOP monographs are considered an excellent tool for prescribing, dispensing and recommending phytotherapy, as well as for education, being used, in addition, as a referential information source by companies in the sector
