RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Both late-life depression and childhood maltreatment have become major global public health issues, given their prevalence and social-economic and health consequences. However, previous studies have solely focused on the relationship of childhood maltreatment to average levels of depressive symptoms. The current study addresses this gap of knowledge by simultaneously examining the impacts of childhood intra- and extra-familial maltreatment on age trajectories of depressive symptoms in later life in the Chinese context. METHODS: Hierarchical linear models were applied to data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018, N = 12,669 individuals aged 45 to 80, comprising N = 43,348 person-years). Depressive symptoms were measured by the CES-D-10 scale. Childhood intra-familial maltreatments were measured by physical abuse and emotional neglect, while extra-familial maltreatment was measured by peer bullying. All analyses were conducted separately by gender in Stata 16. RESULTS: Childhood extrafamilial peer bullying (ß = 1.628, p < 0.001), and intrafamilial physical abuse (ß = 0.746, p < 0.001) and emotional neglect (ß = 0.880, p < 0.001) were associated with higher later-life depressive symptoms levels in the whole sample. Peer bullying differences in depressive symptoms widened with age for both men and women. Physical abuse differences in depressive symptoms remained stable over the life course among men but increased among women. Emotional neglect differences in depressive symptoms decreased with age among men, while it increased first and then decreased among women. CONCLUSIONS: Findings in this study suggest that childhood maltreatment is not only associated with later-life poorer mental health but contributes to increasing inequalities in mental health as people age, especially among peer-bullying victims and women.

RESUMEN

Sympatric distribution and temporal overlap of cryptic zooplankton species pose a challenge to the framework of the niche differentiation theory and the mechanisms allowing competitor coexistence. We applied the methods of phylogenetic analysis, DNA taxonomy, and statistical analysis to study the temporal distribution patterns of the cryptic B. calyciflorus species, an excellent model, in three lakes, and to explore the putative mechanisms for their seasonal succession and temporal overlap. The results showed that in the warm-temperate Lake Yunlong, B. fernandoi and B. calyciflorus s.s. underwent a seasonal succession, which was largely attributed to their differential adaptation to water temperature. In the subtropical Lake Jinghu, B. fernandoi, B. calyciflorus s.s., and B. dorcas exhibited both seasonal succession and temporal overlap. Seasonal successions were largely attributed to their differential adaptation to temperature, and temporal overlap resulted from their differential responses to algal food concentration. In the tropical Lake Jinniu, B. calyciflorus s.s. persisted throughout the year and overlapped with B. dorcas for 5 months. The temporal overlap resulted from their differential responses to copepod predation. These results indicated that the temporal distribution pattern of the cryptic B. calyciforus species and the mechanism that allows competitor coexistence vary with different climate zones.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the impact of caregiving on older people's life satisfaction, focusing on the role of caring for grandchildren. The study considers individual characteristics (aging attitudes) and situational factors (intergenerational support) and aims to identify the mediating roles of aging attitudes and intergenerational support in the relationship between caregiving and life satisfaction. METHOD: The study analyzed data from the 2014 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), focusing on 5363 grandparents who reported providing care for their grandchildren in the 12 months before the survey. Life satisfaction was subjectively measured. The data was analyzed using multiple linear regression, propensity score matching, and mediation analysis. RESULT: The study found that grandparents who cared for their grandchildren have higher levels of life satisfaction. Self-aging attitudes, general aging attitudes, intergenerational economic support, intergenerational instrumental support, and intergenerational emotional support fully mediated the relationship between grandchild care and life satisfaction. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that caring for grandchildren is a vital activity for older people that helps them develop positive aging attitudes and strengthens intergenerational support, thereby improving their quality of life. Hence, the government, society, families, and communities should provide more social support to older adults caring for grandchildren. This would not only benefit the health of the older people themselves but also promote intergenerational harmony and family development.

RESUMEN

Terpyridine (TPY) platinum(II) chloride with a triphenylamine (TPA) group was successfully synthesized. The strong intramolecular Donor(TPA)-Acceptor(TPY) interaction induced the low-energy absorption band, mixing the spin-allowed singlet dπ(Pt)→π*(TPY) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) with the chloride ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and chloride ligand-to-ligand (TPY) charge transfer (LLCT) transitions, to bathochromically shift to λmax = 449 nm with significant enhancement and broadening effects. Using the cyclic voltammetry method, its oxidative electropolymerization (EP) films on working Pt disk and ITO electrodes were produced with tunable thickness and diffusion controlled redox behavior, which were characterized by the SEM, EDS, FT-IR, and AC impedance methods. Upon applying +1.4 V voltage, the sandwich-type electrochromic device (ECD) with ca. 290 nm thickness of the EP film exhibits a distinct color transformation from red (CIE coordinates: L = 50.75, a = 18.58, b = 5.69) to dark blue (CIE coordinates: L = 45.65, a = -1.35, b = -12.49). Good electrochromic (EC) parameters, such as a large optical contrast (ΔT%) of 78%, quick coloration and bleaching response times of 2.9 s and 1.1 s, high coloration and bleaching efficiencies of 278.0 and 390.5 C-1·cm2, and good cycling stability (maintains 70% of the initial ΔT% value after 3200 voltage switching cycles), were obtained.

RESUMEN

The effects of pre-treatments on the drying characteristics, water state, thermal properties, and bulk shrinkage of potato slices during microwave vacuum drying (MVD) were investigated. The pre-treatment included ultrasound in distilled water (USOD-0%), and ultrasound-assisted osmotic dehydration in a 60% sucrose solution (USOD-60%). Results showed that the drying time of potato slices was reduced and the drying rate was increased when USOD-0% was used as a pretreatment, whereas USOD-60% had a negative effect on the drying rate of the samples. The Weibull model was effective in predicting the water changes in potato slices during the drying process. NMR analysis revealed that the relative content of immovable water (M22) increased initially, then decreased for drying, while the transverse relaxation time (T2) and the relative content of free water (M23) decreased consistently. The DSC results indicated that the glass transition temperature (Tg) had an inverse relationship with the water content of the samples, yet had virtually no influence on the volume shrinkage. The sample volumes decreased linearly with the decrease in water content during the initial drying stages. USOD pre-treatment lessened the volume shrinkage of MVD potato slices. Static gravimetry was used to determine the moisture sorption isotherms of MVD potato slices at 30 °C within the aw range of 0.113-0.923. The GAB model accurately fitted the experimental sorption data, which showed sigmoid shape curves for the MVD samples. When aw values exceeded 0.7, the USOD-60% treatment significantly reduce the water sorption capacity of MVD potato slices, while USOD-0% treatment was observed to increase the hygroscopic properties of MVD samples. Compared with the control, USOD-0% pretreatment significantly increased the monolayer water content (X0), sorption surface area (S0), the thickness of sorbed water multilayer (tm), and density of sorbed water (Ds) values of MVD potato slices, while USOD-60% decreased these values.

RESUMEN

Micellar-nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems possessing characteristics such as an excellent circulation stability, inhibited premature release and on-demand site-specific release are urgently needed for enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, a novel kind of shell-sheddable core-crosslinked polymeric micelles with pH and oxidation dual-triggered on-demand drug release behavior was facilely constructed. The multifunctional micelles were self-assembled from a carefully designed amphiphilic triblock PEGylated polyurethane (PEG-acetal-PUBr-acetal-PEG) employing an acid-labile acetal linker at the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface and pendant reactive bromo-containing polyurethane (PU) as the hydrophobic block, followed by a post-crosslinking via oxidation-cleavable diselenide linkages. These well-defined micelles exhibited an enhanced structural stability against dilution, achieved through the incorporation of diselenide crosslinkers. As expected, they were found to possess dual pH- and oxidation-responsive dissociation behaviors when exposure to acid pH (~5.0) and 50 mM H2O2 conditions, as evidenced using dynamic light-scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses. An in vitro drug release investigation showed that the drug indomethacin (IND) could be efficiently encapsulated in the micelles, which demonstrated an inhibited premature release compared to the non-crosslinked ones. It is noteworthy that the resulting micelles could efficiently release entrapped drugs at a fast rate in response to either pH or oxidation stimuli. Moreover, the release could be significantly accelerated in the presence of both acid pH and oxidation conditions, relative to a single stimulus, owing to the synergetic degradation of micelles through pH-induced dePEGylation and oxidation-triggered decrosslinking processes. The proposed shell-sheddable core-crosslinked micelles with a pH and oxidation dual-response could be potential candidates as drug carriers for on-demand drug delivery.

RESUMEN

Internet use has been suggested to have a crucial effect on older adults' quality of life; however, few studies have investigated the underlying mechanisms in the relationship between internet use and life satisfaction among older adults. Employing multiple linear regression models and mediation analysis with 2019 Chinese Social Survey (CSS) data, this study analyzed the associations between the internet use and life satisfaction of Chinese older adults. Additionally, it explored the mediating role of social interaction, including online and offline social interactions. The results showed that internet use was positively associated with older adults' life satisfaction, and offline social interaction significantly mediated internet use. Our findings indicate that internet use could improve older adults' quality of life by promoting offline social interaction. Therefore, the government, communities, and families should create conditions for older adults to integrate into online society and participate in offline social interaction.

RESUMEN

A large body of literature has examined the relationship between social isolation and mental health in older adults. However, only a few studies have examined the mediating effects of aging attitudes on this relationship. This study investigated the impact of objective isolation (family isolation, friend isolation, and community isolation), and subjective social isolation (perceived isolation) on the mental health of Chinese older adults, and the mediating effect of aging attitudes. Mental health was assessed through depressive symptoms, using the Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The research sample comprising 7,024 elderly adults (60 years old), was obtained from the nationally representative 2014 Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey. The regression analysis indicated that objective social isolation and subjective social isolation are independently related to mental health among older adults. Furthermore, in the mediation analysis, aging attitude was found to play a significant mediating role between social isolation and mental health. Our study concludes that though, objective and subjective social isolation are issues affecting mental health in older people, however, aging attitude also needs to be factored in that relationship as we have shown that there is a significant mediating effect.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a global issue among the elderly. The number of older people committing suicide is proliferating, and the elderly suicide rate is the highest among all age groups in China. A better understanding of the possible protective factors against suicidal ideation is necessary to facilitate prevention and intervention efforts. The objectives of the present study are threefold. First, this study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the three-dimensional inventory of character strengths (TICS) with a sample of older adults. Second, this study intends to investigate correlations among suicide ideation, wellbeing, and character strengths. Third, the study seeks to explore the possible protective roles of the three character strengths and wellbeing in explaining suicidal ideation among older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study comprising 308 older adults aged at least 50 years old from nursing homes was conducted. Four questionnaires, namely, the TICS, the Geriatric Suicide Ideation Scale-10 items, the Brief Inventory of Thriving, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale, were used. Exploratory structural equation modeling, intraclass correlation coefficients, partial correlations, and sets of hierarchical regressions were adopted to estimate and report the results. RESULTS: TICS could be used to assess the character strengths (i.e., caring, inquisitiveness, and self-control) among older adults with an acceptable goodness-of-fit (chi square = 157.30, df = 63, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.90, RMSEA = 0.07, 90% CI = [0.06, 0.08]). Wellbeing and character strengths exhibited a negative association with suicidal ideation among older adults. Moreover, character strengths showed an independently cross-sectional relationship with suicidal ideation, explaining 65.1% of the variance of suicidal ideation after controlling for the wellbeing and demographics. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that character strengths were associated with low levels of suicidal ideation. Therefore, the protective factors against suicidal ideation among older adults should be given additional attention.

RESUMEN

In this work, we have developed a novel series of multi-target-directed ligands to address low levels of acetylcholine (ACh), oxidative stress, metal ion dysregulation, and the misfolded proteins. Novel apigenin-donepezil derivatives, naringenin-donepezil derivatives, genistein-donepezil derivatives and chalcone-donepezil derivatives have been synthesized, in vitro results showed that TM-4 was a reversible and potent huAChE (IC50 = 0.36 µM) and huBChE (IC50 = 15.3 µM) inhibitor, and showed potent antioxidant activity (ORAC = 1.2 eq). TM-4 could significantly inhibit self-induced Aß1-42 aggregation (IC50 = 3.7 µM). TM-4 was also an ideal neuroprotectant, potential metal chelation agent, and it could inhibit and disaggregate huAChE-induced and Cu2+-induced Aß aggregation. Moreover, TM-4 could activate UPS degradation pathway in HT22 cells and induce autophagy on U87 cells to clear abnormal proteins associated with AD. More importantly, TM-4 could cross BBB in vitro assay. In addition, in vivo assay revealed that TM-4 exhibited remarkable dyskinesia recovery rate and response efficiency on AlCl3-induced zebrafish AD model, and TM-4 indicated surprising protective effect on Aß1-40-induced vascular injury. TM-4 presented precognitive effect on scopolamine-induced memory impairment. And the regulation of multi-targets for TM-4 were further conformed through transcriptome sequencing. More interesting, the blood, urine and feces metabolism in rat and rat/human liver microsome metabolism towards TM-4 were also investigated. Overall, TM-4 is a promising multi-function candidate for the development of drugs to Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMEN

Here we reported novel apigenin-rivastigmine hybrids were rationally designed and synthesized by the multi-target-directed ligands (MTDLs) strategy, their activity in vitro results revealed that compound 3d showed significant antioxidant potency (ORAC = 1.3 eq), and it was a reversible huAChE (IC50 = 6.8 µM) and huBChE (IC50 = 16.1 µM) inhibitor. 3d also served as a selective metal chelator, and it significantly inhibited and disaggregated self-mediated and Cu2+-mediated Aß1-42 aggregation, and also inhibited hAChE-mediated induced Aß1-40 aggregation. Compound 3d exhibited remarkable neuroprotective effect and hepatoprotective activity. In addition, compound 3d presented favourable blood-brain barrier penetration in vitro and drug-like property. Further, the in vivo assay displayed that 3d indicated remarkable dyskinesia recovery rate and response efficiency on AD zebrafish, and exhibited surprising protective effect on Aß1-40-mediated zebrafish vascular injury. More importantly, 3d did not indicate obvious acute toxicity at dose up to 2000 mg/kg, and could improve scopolamine-induced memory impairment. Subsequently, the regulation of multi-targets for 3d were further confirmed through transcriptome sequencing of brain hippocampi, which also offered novel potential targets and opened a new way to treat Alzheimer's disease. More interestingly, the metabolism of 3din vitro indicated that 4 metabolites in rat liver microsome metabolism, 2 metabolites in human liver microsome metabolism, and 4 metabolites in intestinal flora metabolism, which offered supports for the preclinical study of 3d. Overall, this study exhibited that compound 3d was a promising advanced compound targeted multiple factors associated with AD.

RESUMEN

A series of novel chalcone-O-alkylamine derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated as multifunctional anti-Alzheimer's disease agents. Based on the experimental results, compound 23c exhibited good inhibitory potency on both acetylcholinesterase (IC50 = 1.3 ±â€¯0.01 µM) and butyrylcholinesterase (IC50 = 1.2 ±â€¯0.09 µM). Besides, 23c exhibited selective MAO-B inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 0.57 ±â€¯0.01 µM. Compound 23c was also a potential antioxidant and neuroprotectant. In addition, compound 23c could inhibit self-induced Aß1-42 aggregation. Moreover, compound 23c was a selective metal chelator, and could inhibit and disaggregate Cu2+-induced Aß1-42 aggregation, which was supported by the further transmission electron microscopy images. Furthermore, 23c could cross the blood-brain barrier in vitro, and improved scopolamine-induced memory impairment in vivo assay. Molecular modeling studies showed that 23c could bind to the active site of AChE, BuChE, Aß1-42 and MAO-B. Taken together, these results suggested that compound 23c might be a potential multifunctional agent for the treatment of AD.

RESUMEN

Despite the flourishing of positive education, understanding of whether different character strengths have different predictive effects on academic achievement/well-being and the mechanisms of actions between character strengths are limited. Specifically, this study adopted strength use as a mediator to understand how character strength (assessed by caring, inquisitiveness, and self-control) is associated with students' end-of-year academic achievements and eudaimonic well-being. Survey data from 349 adolescents from three different schools showed that three factors of character strengths have positive correlations with academic achievements and eudaimonic well-being. Regression models indicated that inquisitiveness and self-control predicted academic achievements, while caring, inquisitiveness, and self-control predicted eudaimonic well-being, with the foremost as the strongest predictor. Mediation analyses indicated that (1) strengths use fully mediated the relationship between inquisitiveness, self-control, and academic achievements/eudaimonic well-being, while (2) caring had a direct effect on eudaimonic well-being. These findings provided possible explanations on how character strengths could affect students' academic achievements or eudaimonic well-being and theoretical and empirical evidence for practices that aim to enhance students' academic achievements and positive developments via interventions based on character strengths.

RESUMEN

A range of low band gap donor-acceptor conjugated polymers (P1-P3) with backbones composed of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) units were designed and synthesized using the Stille coupling reaction. The optical, electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the resultant polymers were thoroughly characterized. These polymers showed exceptional solubility in common organic solvents and displayed thermal stability at a high temperature. The optical and electrochemical measurements revealed slight variations in the maximum absorptions and oxidation peaks depending on the intrinsic D-A ratio in each polymer, and narrow band gaps lower than 1.60 eV were found for these polymers. Upon oxidation, the polymer films exhibit distinct color changes (pale violet-red to dark gray for P1, rosy brown to silver for P2, atrovirens to light grey for P3) in the VIS and NIR regions. Moreover, the electrochromic switching studies indicated that these polymers have favorable switching properties, such as rapid response speed and high optical contrast and coloration efficiency, and are outstanding candidates for electrochromic applications.

RESUMEN

A novel pH and oxidation dual-responsive and injectable supramolecular hydrogel was developed, which was formed from multi-block copolymer poly(ether urethane) (PEU) and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) inclusion complexes (ICs). The PEU copolymer was synthesized through a simple one-pot condensation polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol), di(1-hydroxyethylene) diselenide, dimethylolpropionic acid and 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate. In aqueous solution, the amphiphilic PEU copolymers could self-assemble into nanoparticles with dual pH and oxidation sensitivities, which can efficiently load and controllably release a hydrophobic drug indomethacin (IND). Then a dual-drug loaded supramolecular hydrogel was obtained by addition of α-CD and hydrophilic model drug (rhodamine B, RB) into the resulting IND-loaded PEU nanoparticle solution. The rheology studies showed that the supramolecular hydrogels with good injectability underwent a pH-induced reversible sol-gel transition and an oxidation-triggered degradation behavior. The in vitro drug release results demonstrated that the hydrogels showed dual drug release behavior and the release rates could be significantly accelerated by addition of an oxidizing agent (H2O2) or increasing the environmental pH. Therefore, this injectable and dual stimuli-responsive supramolecular hydrogel based codelivery systems could potentially be a promising candidate for controlled drug delivery systems.

RESUMEN

Here, we report the preparation and self-assembly of amphiphilic polyurethane phosphate ester (PUP) polymers with phospholipid-like structures. The polymers, designed to have a hydrophilic phosphate head and two amphiphilic PPG-IPDI-MPEG (PU) tails were synthesized via coupling and phosphorylation reactions in sequence. These amphiphilic polymers could self-assemble into various interesting nanostructures in aqueous solution, such as spherical, worm-like micelles, vesicles, and large compound vesicles, depending on the hydrophobic chain length of PU tails and the initial polymer concentrations. It was found that the morphology transition is not only caused by the unique molecular structure of amphiphilic polyurethanes, but also influenced by the additional hydrophilic phosphate groups incorporated, which disturb the force balance governing the aggregation structures. This research supplies a new clue for the fabrication of well-defined nanostructures.

RESUMEN

Power ultrasound, which can enhance nucleation rate and crystal growth rate, can also affect the physico-chemical properties of immersion frozen products. In this study, the influence of slow freezing (SF), immersion freezing (IF) and ultrasound-assisted freezing (UAF) on physico-chemical properties and volatile compounds of red radish was investigated. Results showed that ultrasound application significantly improved the freezing rate; the freezing time of ultrasound application at 0.26 W/cm(2) was shorten by 14% and 90%, compared to IF and SF, respectively. UAF products showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in drip loss and phytonutrients (anthocyanins, vitamin C and phenolics) loss. Compared to SF products, IF and UAF products showed better textural preservation and higher calcium content. The radish tissues exhibited better cellular structures under ultrasonic power intensities of 0.17 and 0.26 W/cm(2) with less cell separation and disruption. RESUMEN

Ultrasonic processing is a novel and promising technology in food industry. The propagation of ultrasound in a medium generates various physical and chemical effects and these effects have been harnessed to improve the efficiency of various food processing operations. Ultrasound has also been used in food quality control as diagnostic technology. This article provides an overview of recent developments related to the application of ultrasound in low temperature and closely related processes such as freezing, thawing, freeze concentration and freeze drying. The applications of high intensity ultrasound to improve the efficiency of freezing process, to control the size and size distribution of ice crystals and to improve the quality of frozen foods have been discussed in considerable detail. The use of low intensity ultrasound in monitoring the ice content and to monitor the progress of freezing process has also been highlighted.

RESUMEN

A novel rod-containing block copolymer is constructed by supramacromolecular self-assembly of α-cyclodextrin and a triblock copolymer with methoxy polyethylene glycol as the flanking chains and the midterm block alternately connected by 2,2-dimethylolbutyric acid and isophorone diisocyanate. The assembled rod-containing block copolymer shows an exciting phenomenon of concentration- and pH-dependent morphological switching of well-defined nanostructures. In the solutions at pH 9.2, spherical micelles, rod-like micelles, and hydrogel are observed successively with an increase of the concentration. Notably, the rod-like micelles are composed of spherical segments due to the combination of the crystalline cores of the spherical micelles. In addition, 1D nanostructures with different curvatures from linear rod-like micelles (pH 9.2) to ring-shaped micelles (pH 7.5) can be obtained by controlling the pH values of the assembled systems.
