RESUMEN

RATIONALE: Timely treatment and recovery of cardiac arrest in out-of-hospital settings present significant challenges. This report describes a novel method of integrating advanced monitoring techniques such as radial artery cannulation in the treatment of an 85-year-old male patient who suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient, an 85-year-old man, experienced sudden cardiac arrest at home around 4:10 pm on November 22, 2023, characterized by immediate loss of consciousness and absence of pulse, and no response when called by name, necessitating urgent medical intervention. DIAGNOSES: The patient was diagnosed with OHCA by the emergency doctor, which was further confirmed by the absence of spontaneous circulation and respiratory failure. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), ventilator-assisted ventilation, internal jugular venous catheterization, medical treatment, mechanical CPR, and supplemented by radial artery cannulation for invasive blood pressure monitoring. This technique was pivotal for real-time hemodynamic assessment. OUTCOMES: The invasive monitoring facilitated the early detection of the return of spontaneous circulation, allowing for the timely cessation of mechanical CPR. Subsequent treatment in the intensive care unit was optimized based on continuous arterial pressure readings, enhancing the stabilization of the patient's condition. LESSONS: This case underscores the significant role of radial artery cannulation for invasive blood pressure monitoring in improving clinical outcomes for patients experiencing OHCA. Integrating radial artery cannulation with other advanced monitoring techniques aids in the early detection of the return of spontaneous circulation and optimizes subsequent intensive care treatment.

Liver oncogenesis is accompanied by discernible protein changes in the bloodstream. By employing plasma proteomic profiling, we can delve into the molecular mechanisms of liver cancer and pinpoint potential biomarkers. In this nested case-control study, we applied liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for proteome profiling in baseline plasma samples. Differential protein expression was determined and was subjected to functional enrichment, network, and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. We identified 193 proteins with notable differential levels between the groups. Of these proteins, MR analysis offered a compelling negative association between apolipoprotein B (APOB) and liver cancer. This association was further corroborated in the UK Biobank cohort: genetically predicted APOB levels were associated with a 31% (95% CI 19-42%) decreased risk of liver cancer; and phenotypic analysis indicated an 11% (95% CI 8-14%) decreased liver cancer risk for every 0.1 g/L increase of circulating APOB levels. Multivariable MR analysis suggested that the hepatic fat content might fully mediate the APOB-liver cancer connection. In summary, we identified some plasma proteins, particularly APOB, as potential biomarkers of liver cancer. Our findings underscore the intricate link between lipid metabolism and liver cancer, offering hints for targeted prophylactic strategies and early detection.

Background: Refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (refractory GERD) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by unresponsiveness or poor efficacy to proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). This chronic disorder substantially weakens patients' mental wellbeing and quality of life, increasing the financial burden on society. Multiple articles have been reported in this area. However, literature involving scientometric analysis of refractory GERD is absent. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the evolution of research themes and the main hotspots of refractory GERD through bibliometric methods. Methods: All documents related to refractory GERD based on the WOS Core Collection from January 2000 to November 2023 were selected for analysis. Citespace V 6.1 R6, VOSviewer V 1.6.20, and Scimago Graphica V 1.0.38 were used to perform bibliometric analysis. Results: We collected a total of 241 research articles from 36 countries and 322 institutions, contributed by over 1,000 authors. Over the last 20 years, the number of articles in this field has increased year by year, and since 2011, the number of publications has increased dramatically, with 85.89% of the papers. These countries are led by the United States and Japan. GUT had the highest number of citations and DIGESTION had the highest number of publications. Research on standardized diagnosis and management, mechanisms, novel monitoring methods, and innovative drugs and procedures for refractory GERD are the main topics and hotspots in this field. This study also found that neuroimmune interaction is closely related to refractory GERD, which may be a new direction for future mechanism research. Conclusion: Our study is the first bibliometric analysis of the global literature on refractory GERD. This research provides valuable insights for researchers, enabling them to quickly understand the research frontier and hot topics of this field.

To determine age-related alterations in vortex veins in healthy subjects. A total of 228 healthy subjects (aged 4 to 86 years) were recruited and divided into four groups (G1, <21 years; G2, 21-40 years; G3, 41-60 years; and G4, 61-86 years). The clinical characteristics of the participants were recorded, and parameters including the number of vortex vein roots (NVVR), the central vortex vein diameter (CVVD), the mean root area of the vortex vein (MRAVV), and the weighted mean of the thickest branch diameter (WMTBD) were obtained by marking the vortex veins on indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). The NVVR in the age group over 60 years old was significantly lower than that in other age groups (P < 0.05). The CVVD, MRAVV, and WMTBD of all age groups increased with increasing age (P < 0.05). The NVVR was unevenly distributed among the quadrants (P < 0.001). The proportions of type four vortex veins (complete systems including ampulla) and anastomotic branches of the vortex veins were significantly increased in elderly participants over 50 years of age (P < 0.05). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was significantly correlated with age, NVVR, CVVD and MRAVV (P < 0.05). This is the first study to reveal age-related alterations in vortex veins on ICGA in a healthy population. Aging may lead to partial vortex occlusion and residual vortex dilation. As age increases, anastomotic branches increasingly appear between the originally independent vortex veins. Translational relevance: Aging may lead to partial vortex occlusion and residual vortex dilation.

In pulse power systems, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) encounter significant challenges due to the heightened loading electric field (E), which can lead to fatigue damage and ultrasonic concussion caused by electrostrictive strain. To address these issues, an innovative strategy focused on achieving an ultra-weak polarization-strain coupling effect is proposed, which effectively reduces strain in MLCCs. Remarkably, an ultra-low electrostrictive coefficient (Q33) of 0.012 m4 C-2 is achieved in the composition 0.55(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-0.45Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3, resulting in a significantly reduced strain of 0.118% at 330 kV cm-1. At the atomic scale, the local structural heterogeneity leads to an expanded and loose lattice structure, providing ample space for large ionic displacement polarization instead of lattice stretching when subjected to the applied E. This unique behavior not only promotes energy storage performance (ESP) but also accounts for the observed ultra-low Q33 and strain. Consequently, the MLCC device exhibits an impressive energy storage density of 14.6 J cm-3 and an ultrahigh efficiency of 93% at 720 kV cm-1. Furthermore, the superior ESP of the MLCC demonstrates excellent fatigue resistance and temperature stability, making it a promising solution for practical applications. Overall, this pivotal strategy offers a cost-effective solution for state-of-the-art MLCCs with ultra-low strain-vibration in pulse power systems.

BACKGROUND: Preschoolers become anxious when they are about to undergo anesthesia and surgery, warranting the development of more appropriate and effective interventions. AIM: To explore the effect of static cartoons combined with dynamic virtual environments on preoperative anxiety and anesthesia induction compliance in preschool-aged children undergoing surgery. METHODS: One hundred and sixteen preschool-aged children were selected and assigned to the drug (n = 37), intervention (n = 40), and control (n = 39) groups. All the children received routine preoperative checkups and nursing before being transferred to the preoperative preparation room on the day of the operation. The drug group received 0.5 mg/kg midazolam and the intervention group treatment consisting of static cartoons combined with dynamic virtual environments. The control group received no intervention. The modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale was used to evaluate the children's anxiety level on the day before surgery (T0), before leaving the preoperative preparation room (T1), when entering the operating room (T2), and at anesthesia induction (T3). Compliance during anesthesia induction (T3) was evaluated using the Induction Compliance Checklist (ICC). Changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and respiratory rate (RR) were also recorded at each time point. RESULTS: The anxiety scores of the three groups increased variously at T1 and T2. At T3, both the drug and intervention groups had similar anxiety scores, both of which were lower than those in the control group. At T1 and T2, MAP, HR, and RR of the three groups increased. The drug and control groups had significantly higher MAP and RR than the intervention group at T2. At T3, the MAP, HR, and RR of the drug group decreased and were significantly lower than those in the control group but were comparable to those in the intervention group. Both the drug and intervention groups had similar ICC scores and duration of anesthesia induction (T3), both of which were higher than those of the control group. CONCLUSION: Combining static cartoons with dynamic virtual environments as effective as medication, specifically midazolam, in reducing preoperative anxiety and fear in preschool-aged children. This approach also improve their compliance during anesthesia induction and helped maintain their stable vital signs.

The Yellow River Delta played a vital role in the development of the Neolithic civilization of China. However, the population history of this region from the Neolithic transitions to the present remains poorly understood due to the lack of ancient human genomes. This especially holds for key Neolithic transitions and tumultuous turnovers of dynastic history. Here, we report genome-wide data from 69 individuals dating to 5,410-1,345 years before present (BP) at 0.008 to 2.49× coverages, along with 325 present-day individuals collected from 16 cities across Shandong. During the Middle to Late Dawenkou period, we observed a significant influx of ancestry from Neolithic Yellow River farmers in central China and some southern Chinese ancestry that mixed with local hunter-gatherers in Shandong. The genetic heritage of the Shandong Longshan people was found to be most closely linked to the Dawenkou culture. During the Shang to Zhou Dynasties, there was evidence of genetic admixture of local Longshan populations with migrants from the Central Plain. After the Qin to Han Dynasties, the genetic composition of the region began to resemble that of modern Shandong populations. Our genetic findings suggest that the middle Yellow River Basin farmers played a role in shaping the genetic affinity of neighboring populations in northern China during the Middle to Late Neolithic period. Additionally, our findings indicate that the genetic diversity in the Shandong region during the Zhou Dynasty may be linked with their complex ethnicities.

BACKGROUND: Transcription factors (TFs) of plant-specific SHORT INTERNODES (SHI) family play a significant role in regulating development and metabolism in plants. In Artemisia annua, various TFs from different families have been discovered to regulate the accumulation of artemisinin. However, specific members of the SHI family in A. annua (AaSHIs) have not been identified to regulate the biosynthesis of artemisinin. RESULTS: We found five AaSHI genes (AaSHI1 to AaSHI5) in the A. annua genome. The expression levels of AaSHI1, AaSHI2, AaSHI3 and AaSHI4 genes were higher in trichomes and young leaves, also induced by light and decreased when the plants were subjected to dark treatment. The expression pattern of these four AaSHI genes was consistent with the expression pattern of four structural genes of artemisinin biosynthesis and their specific regulatory factors. Dual-luciferase reporter assays, yeast one-hybrid assays, and transient transformation in A. annua provided the evidence that AaSHI1 could directly bind to the promoters of structural genes AaADS and AaCYP71AV1, and positively regulate their expressions. This study has presented candidate genes, with AaSHI1 in particular, that can be considered for the metabolic engineering of artemisinin biosynthesis in A. annua. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, a genome-wide analysis of the AaSHI TF family of A. annua was conducted. Five AaSHIs were identified in A. annua genome. Among the identified AaSHIs, AaSHI1 was found to be localized to the nucleus and activate the expression of structural genes of artemisinin biosynthesis including AaADS and AaCYP71AV1. These results indicated that AaSHI1 had positive roles in modulating artemisinin biosynthesis, providing candidate genes for obtaining high-quality new A. annua germplasms.

Centrosomes rely upon proteins within the pericentriolar material to nucleate and organize microtubules. Several mRNAs also reside at centrosomes, although less is known about how and why they accumulate there. We previously showed that local Centrocortin ( Cen ) mRNA supports centrosome separation, microtubule organization, and viability in Drosophila embryos. Here, using Cen mRNA as a model, we examine mechanisms of centrosomal mRNA localization. We find that while the Cen N'-terminus is sufficient for protein enrichment at centrosomes, multiple domains cooperate to concentrate Cen mRNA at this location. We further identify an N'-terminal motif within Cen that is conserved among dynein cargo adaptor proteins and test its contribution to RNA localization. Our results support a model whereby Cen protein enables the accumulation of its own mRNA to centrosomes through a mechanism requiring active translation, microtubules, and the dynein motor complex. Taken together, our data uncover the basis of translation-dependent localization of a centrosomal RNA required for mitotic integrity. Summary: Enrichment of Centrocortin ( Cen ) mRNA at centrosomes is required for mitotic fidelity. This study describes a mechanism underlying co-translational Cen mRNA targeting involving microtubules, the dynein motor, and a highly conserved dynein binding motif within the Cen coding sequence.

China's Northern and Southern Dynasties period (3rd-6th centuries AD) marked a significant era of ethnic integration in northern China. However, previous ancient DNA studies have primarily focused on northern ethnic groups, with limited research on the genetic formation of the hereditary elite family, especially considering their abundant archaeological record and clear material identity. In this study, we obtained the ancient genome of a hereditary elite family, Gao Bin (, 503-572 AD), at 0.6473-fold coverage with 475132 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the 1240k panel. His mitochondrial haplogroup belonged to Z4 and Y-haplogroup to O1a1a2b-F2444*. The genetic profile of Gao Bin was most similar to that of the northern Han Chinese. He could be modelled as deriving all his ancestry from Late Neolithic to Iron Age Yellow River farmers without influence from Northeast Asia, Korea, or the Mongolian Plateau. Our study sheds light on the genetic formation of hereditary elite families in the context of the Southern and Northern Dynasties ethnic integration.

Shandong province, located in the Lower Yellow River, is one of the birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization. However, the comprehensive genetic histories of this region have remained largely unknown until now due to a lack of ancient human genomes. Here, we present 21 ancient genomes from Shandong dating from the Warring States period to the Jin-Yuan Dynasties. Unlike the early Neolithic samples from Shandong, the historical samples are most closely related to post-Late Neolithic populations of the Middle Yellow River Basin, suggesting a population turnover in Shandong from the Neolithic Age to the Historical era. In addition, we detect a close genetic affinity between the historical samples in Shandong and present-day Han Chinese, showing long-term genetic stability in Han Chinese at least since the Warring States period.

This study investigated the effects of modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction on the expression of proteins related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT) in a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction( UUO) and in a rat renal tubular epithelial cell(NRK-52E) model of fibrosis induced by transforming growth factor ß1(TGF-ß1). It aims to decipher the molecular mechanism by which modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction alleviates renal interstitial fibrosis. C57/BL mice were subjected to UUO.After the surgery, the mice were treated with 0. 5-fold and 2-fold concentrations of modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction and fosinopril sodium(positive control) for 7 days. The interstitial collagen deposition in the kidney was assessed by Masson staining. Western blot and RT-qPCR were employed to determine the expression levels of TGF-ß1, phosphorylated Smad2/3(p-Smad2/3), Smad2/3, Snail,epithelial cadherin(E-cadherin), alpha smooth muscle actin(α-SMA), and vimentin. The NRK-52E cell model induced by TGF-ß1was treated with the serum samples collected from SD rats treated with different concentrations of modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction.The CCK-8 assay was employed to examine the effects of the serum samples on NRK-52E cell proliferation. The cell morphology in different groups was observed under a microscope. Furthermore, the modeled cells were treated with the serum containing 1-fold decoction. Western blot and RT-qPCR were then employed to measure the expression levels of p-Smad2/3, Smad2/3, Snail,E-cadherin, α-SMA, and vimentin in the cells. Under the same conditions, sh RNA was used to silence the Snail gene, and measurements were repeated before and after treatment with the serum containing 1-fold decoction. The results indicated that modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction alleviated the fibrotic injury in the mouse model of UUO and the fibrosis in the NRK-52E cell model. The treatment with the decoction down-regulated the protein and m RNA levels of EMT-related indicators including p-Smad2/3, α-SMA,Snail, and vimentin, while it up-regulated the expression of E-cadherin. After sh RNA silencing of the Snail gene, the protein and m RNA levels of E-cadherin, α-SMA, and vimentin showed no significant differences before and after treatment with the serum containing the decoction. The results suggest that modified Fangji Huangqi Decoction may alleviate renal interstitial fibrosis by inhibiting the TGF-ß1/Smad/Snail signaling pathway and regulating the EMT process.

Psoriasis is a common inflammatory systemic disease characterized by pro-inflammatory macrophages activation (M1 macrophage) infiltrated in the dermal layer. How M1 macrophage contributes to psoriasis remains unknown. In this study, we found that adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) agonist CGS 21680 HCl alleviated the imiquimod (IMQ) and mouse IL-23 Protein (rmIL-23)-induced psoriasis inflammation through reducing infiltration of M1. Conversely, Adora2a deletion in mice exacerbated psoriasis-like phenotype. Mechanistically, A2AR activation inhibited M1 macrophage activation via the NF-κB-KRT16 pathway to reduce the secretion of CXCL10/11 and inhibit Th1/17 differentiation. Notably, the KRT16 expression was first found in M1 macrophage in our study, not only in keratinocytes (KCs). CXCL10/11 are first identified as primarily derived from macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) rather than KCs in psoriasis using single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq). In total, the study emphasizes the importance of M1 as an innate immune cell in pathogenesis of psoriasis.

The diverse roles of the dynein motor in shaping microtubule networks and cargo transport complicate in vivo analysis of its functions significantly. To address this issue, we have generated a series of missense mutations in Drosophila Dynein heavy chain. We show that mutations associated with human neurological disease cause a range of defects, including impaired cargo trafficking in neurons. We also describe a novel microtubule-binding domain mutation that specifically blocks the metaphase-anaphase transition during mitosis in the embryo. This effect is independent from dynein's canonical role in silencing the spindle assembly checkpoint. Optical trapping of purified dynein complexes reveals that this mutation only compromises motor performance under load, a finding rationalized by the results of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. We propose that dynein has a novel function in anaphase progression that depends on it operating in a specific load regime. More broadly, our work illustrates how in vivo functions of motors can be dissected by manipulating their mechanical properties.

This study investigated the etiology, clinical features, and prognosis of patients diagnosed with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (BSSNHL). The clinical data of 100 patients with bilateral sudden hearing loss as a chief complaint treated at Xiangya Second Hospital of Central South University between January 2010 and August 2022, including clinical characteristics, audiometric data, and prognosis, were retrospectively analyzed. These 100 cases accounted for 8.09% (100/1235) of all patients admitted for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) during the same period. Of these, 71 were simultaneous cases and 29 were sequential cases of BSSNHL. Among the 200 ears analyzed in this study, 13, 36, 57, and 94 had mild, moderate, severe, and profound sensorineural hearing loss, respectively. The overall effective rate after comprehensive treatment was 32%, with significant differences in efficacy and prognosis among different degrees of hearing loss (p < 0.05). Comorbidities of hypertension (24 cases), diabetes (14 cases), and coronary heart disease (9 cases) significantly impacted therapeutic efficacy and prognosis in patients with BSSNHL (p < 0.05). Compared to unilateral SSNHL, BSSNHL exhibits distinctive characteristics.

Facial morphology, a complex trait influenced by genetics, holds great significance in evolutionary research. However, due to limited fossil evidence, the facial characteristics of Neanderthals and Denisovans have remained largely unknown. In this study, we conducted a large-scale multi-ethnic meta-analysis of the genome-wide association study (GWAS), including 9674 East Asians and 10,115 Europeans, quantitatively assessing 78 facial traits using 3D facial images. We identified 71 genomic loci associated with facial features, including 21 novel loci. We developed a facial polygenic score (FPS) that enables the prediction of facial features based on genetic information. Interestingly, the distribution of FPSs among populations from diverse continental groups exhibited relevant correlations with observed facial features. Furthermore, we applied the FPS to predict the facial traits of seven Neanderthals and one Denisovan using ancient DNA and aligned predictions with the fossil records. Our results suggested that Neanderthals and Denisovans likely shared similar facial features, such as a wider but shorter nose and a wider endocanthion distance. The decreased mouth width was characterized specifically in Denisovans. The integration of genomic data and facial trait analysis provides valuable insights into the evolutionary history and adaptive changes in human facial morphology.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most common internal modifications in eukaryotic RNA. The presence of m6A on transcripts can affect a series of fundamental cellular processes, including mRNA splicing, nuclear transportation, stability, and translation. The m6A modification is introduced by m6A methyltransferases (writers), removed by demethylases (erasers), and recognized by m6A-binding proteins (readers). Current research has demonstrated that m6A methylation is involved in the regulation of malignant phenotypes in tumors by controlling the expression of cancer-related genes. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a diverse group of RNA molecules that do not encode proteins and are widely present in the human genome. This group includes microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and PIWI interaction RNAs (piRNAs). They function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors through various mechanisms, regulating the initiation and progression of cancer. Previous studies on m6A primarily focused on coding RNAs, but recent discoveries have revealed the significant regulatory role of m6A in ncRNAs. Simultaneously, ncRNAs also exert their influence by modulating the stability, splicing, translation, and other biological processes of m6A-related enzymes. The interplay between m6A and ncRNAs collectively contributes to the occurrence and progression of malignant tumors in humans. This review provides an overview of the interactions between m6A regulatory factors and ncRNAs and their impact on tumors.

Beauveria bassiana, the causative agent of arthropod, proliferates in the host hemolymph (liquid environment) and shits to saprotrophic growth on the host cadaver (aerial surface). In this study, we used transcriptomic analysis to compare the gene expression modes between these two growth phases. Of 10,366 total predicted genes in B. bassiana, 10,026 and 9985 genes were expressed in aerial (AM) and submerged (SM) mycelia, respectively, with 9853 genes overlapped. Comparative analysis between two transcriptomes indicated that there were 1041 up-regulated genes in AM library when compared with SM library, and 1995 genes were down-regulated, in particular, there were 7085 genes without significant change in expression between two transcriptomes. Furthermore, of 25 amidase genes (AMD), BbAMD5 has high expression level in both transcriptomes, and its protein product was associated with cell wall in aerial and submerged mycelia. Disruption of BbAMD5 significantly reduced mycelial hydrophobicity, hydrophobin translocation, and conidiation on aerial plate. Functional analysis also indicated that BbAmd5 was involved in B. bassiana blastospore formation in broth, but dispensable for fungal virulence. This study revealed the high similarity in global expression mode between mycelia grown under two cultivation conditions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In virtual surgery, the resolution of bleeding surface has a significant impact on the realism. The computational complexity of internal particles reduces real-time performance, which has no obvious contribution to the visual effect of simulation. This paper focuses on the study of bleeding simulation in virtual surgery to improve the visual realism while meeting real-time performance and physical properties. An innovative adaptive-particle-based algorithm is proposed, which combines the repulsive force and the biomechanical properties, to achieve both realistic and computational efficiency in bleeding simulation. METHODS: This paper integrates three modules based on Lagrangian particle method to achieve high fidelity real-time bleeding simulation in virtual surgery. Stepless adaptive particle algorithm is proposed to change the mass (radius) based on the proportion of particle positions between the bleeding surface and the soft tissue, which improves the resolution of bleeding surface and reduces the computational complexity of internal particles. The particle repulsion is introduced to avoid volume distortion caused by permeation of adaptive particles during collision, meeting the requirement of mass conservation. The biomechanics of bleeding particles are explored through the improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) algorithm solving the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equation to improve the realism of physical properties. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Compared to traditional simulation, the method proposed in this paper performs smoother bleeding surface, especially when topological changes occur during suction operation. Through particle tracking curves, it is possible to visually read the stepless variations of particle radius with position in different regions. Bleeding simulation is suitable for the bleeding effect of various types of wounds, which is well applied in virtual surgical scenes.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can induce erythema and tanning responses with strong diversity within and between populations, but there were no precise method for evaluating the variation in these responses. In this study, we assessed the time course of ultraviolet (UV)-induced responses based on the erythema index (EI) and melanin index (MI) over 14 consecutive days in a pilot cohort study (N = 31). From safety evaluations, we found that no skin blisters occurred at a UV dosage of 45 mJ/cm2, but there were significant skin reactions. Regardless of UV dosage, the measurements and variances of EI peaked on day 1 after UV irradiation, and those of MI peaked on day 7. Dose-response curves, including erythema dose-response (EDR) and melanin dose-response (MDR), could measure UV-induced phenotypes sensitively but more laboriously. As an alternative, we directly represented the UV-induced erythema and tanning responses using the erythema increment (ΔE) and melanin increment (ΔM). We found that ΔE and ΔM at 45 mJ/cm2 significantly correlated with erythema dose-response (EDR) (R 2 > 0.9) and melanin dose-response (MDR) (R 2 > 0.9), respectively. Therefore, ΔE and ΔM on day 1 and day 7 after UV irradiation at a dosage of 45 mJ/cm2 might be ideal alternative measures for assessing individual erythema and tanning responses. Then, a second cohort (N = 664) was recruited to validate the UV-induced phenotypes, and, as expected, the results of the two cohorts were in agreement. Therefore, we developed a simplified and precise method to quantify the UV-induced erythema response and tanning ability for the Han Chinese population.
