RESUMEN

The study aimed to mine and characterize novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from the Shanxi aged vinegar microbiome. Utilizing machine learning techniques, AlphaFold2 structure prediction and molecular dynamics simulations, six novel AMPs were innovatively mined from 98,539 peptides based on metagenomic data, of which one peptide secreted by Lactobacillus (named La-AMP) was experimentally validated to have remarkable bactericidal effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) with high stability and no hemolytic activity. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that La-AMP caused irreversible damage to cell membranes of S. aureus and E. coli, a finding further confirmed by calcein-AM/propidium iodide staining. Additionally, La-AMP induced nucleic acid leakage and reactive oxygen species accumulation in bacterial cells. It was found to bind to DNA gyrase through salt bridges, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions, ultimately inducing apoptosis. Thus, La-AMP exhibited encouraging promise as a valuable bioactive component for the development of natural preservatives.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic mycotoxins. The use of probiotics is an effective approach to reduce aflatoxins content in foods. To find efficient bacterial species that can eliminate or detoxify AFB1, a bacterial strain S51 capable of degrading AFB1 was isolated from chicken intestine and soil samples by using a culture medium containing coumarin as the sole carbon source. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this isolate (strain S51) was identified as Bacillus licheniformis strain QT338. Further characterization of strain S51 showed that it could degrade AFB1 by 61.3% after incubation at 30°C for 72 h. Additional studies demonstrated that S51 promoted good growth performance of the treated chickens, showed no hemolytic activity, carried few drug resistance genes, and exhibited a certain level of tolerance to acid and bile salts. Furthermore, to verify whether strain S51 exerts a protective effect on AFB1-induced liver injury in chickens and to elucidate the underlying mechanism, a chicken toxicity model was induced with AFB1 (100 µg/kg BW) and treated with S51(1×109CFU/mL) for 12 d. The results showed that S51 decreased the level of alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and total bilirubin (P < 0.05); increased glutathione activity and total antioxidant capacityin the liver induced by AFB1, and decreased malondialdehyde production (P < 0.05). S51 also up-regulated the mRNA expression level of the antioxidant proteins HO-1 and Nrf2 and down-regulated the expression of the oxidation-related factor Keap1 in the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway (P <0.05). S51 inhibited hepatocyte apoptosis induced by AFB1 and decreased the mRNA expression levels of the apoptosis-related genes Bax, caspase-3, caspase-9, and Cyt-C (P < 0.05). These results indicate that S51 regulates apoptosis and alleviates AFB1-induced oxidative stress in chicken liver by controlling the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway.

Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator is commonly used for hematoma evacuation in minimally invasive surgery following intracerebral hemorrhage. However, during minimally invasive surgery, recombinant tissue plasminogen activator may come into contact with brain tissue. Therefore, a thorough assessment of its safety is required. In this study, we established a mouse model of intracerebral hemorrhage induced by type VII collagenase. We observed that the administration of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator without hematoma aspiration significantly improved the neurological function of mice with intracerebral hemorrhage, reduced pathological damage, and lowered the levels of apoptosis and autophagy in the tissue surrounding the hematoma. In an in vitro model of intracerebral hemorrhage using primary cortical neurons induced by hemin, the administration of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator suppressed neuronal apoptosis, autophagy, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that recombinant tissue plasminogen activator upregulated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway in neurons. Moreover, the phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002 abrogated the neuroprotective effects of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator in inhibiting excessive apoptosis, autophagy, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Furthermore, to specify the domain of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator responsible for its neuroprotective effects, various inhibitors were used to target distinct domains. It has been revealed that the epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor AG-1478 reversed the effect of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway. These findings suggest that recombinant tissue plasminogen activator exerts a direct neuroprotective effect on neurons following intracerebral hemorrhage, possibly through activation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway.

Microorganisms consume and transform dissolved organic matter (DOM) into various forms. However, it remains unclear whether the ecological patterns and drivers of DOM chemodiversity are analogous to those of microbial communities. Here, a large-scale investigation is conducted along the Chinese coasts to resolve the intrinsic linkages among the complex intertidal DOM pools, microbial communities and environmental heterogeneity. The abundance of DOM molecular formulae best fits log-normal distribution and follows Taylor's Law. Distance-decay relationships are observed for labile molecular formulae, while latitudinal diversity gradients are noted for recalcitrant molecular formulae. Latitudinal patterns are also observed for DOM molecular features. Negative cohesion, bacterial diversity, and molecular traits are the main drivers of DOM chemodiversity. Stochasticity analyses demonstrate that determinism dominantly shapes the DOM compositional variations. This study unveils the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the intertidal DOM chemodiversity and microbial communities from ecological perspectives, deepening our understanding of microbially driven chemical ecology.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ), leading to negative consequences like premature mortality. Gut dysbiosis, which refers to an imbalance of the microbiota, and chronic inflammation are associated with both SZ and MetS. However, the relationship between gut dysbiosis, host immunological dysfunction, and SZ comorbid with MetS (SZ-MetS) remains unclear. This study aims to explore alterations in gut microbiota and their correlation with immune dysfunction in SZ-MetS, offering new insights into its pathogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: We enrolled 114 Chinese patients with SZ-MetS and 111 age-matched healthy controls from Zhejiang, China, to investigate fecal microbiota using Illumina MiSeq sequencing targeting 16 S rRNA gene V3-V4 hypervariable regions. Host immune responses were assessed using the Bio-Plex Pro Human Cytokine 27-Plex Assay to examine cytokine profiles. In SZ-MetS, we observed decreased bacterial α-diversity and significant differences in ß-diversity. LEfSe analysis identified enriched acetate-producing genera (Megamonas and Lactobacillus), and decreased butyrate-producing bacteria (Subdoligranulum, and Faecalibacterium) in SZ-MetS. These altered genera correlated with body mass index, the severity of symptoms (as measured by the Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms and Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms), and triglyceride levels. Altered bacterial metabolic pathways related to lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, lipid metabolism, and various amino acid metabolism were also found. Additionally, SZ-MetS exhibited immunological dysfunction with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, which correlated with the differential genera. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that gut microbiota dysbiosis and immune dysfunction play a vital role in SZ-MetS development, highlighting potential therapeutic approaches targeting the gut microbiota. While these therapies show promise, further mechanistic studies are needed to fully understand their efficacy and safety before clinical implementation.

Three luminescent copper(I) halides featuring distinct polyhedra were obtained via solvent volatilization, in which consecutive phase transformations of copper(I)-iodide units were triggered by methanol, along with visual luminescence switches, enabling applicability in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Such a multiple structural regulation in metal halides provides versatile design principles for photoluminescence tuning.

Capsaicin (CAP) exerts significant anti-tumor effects on a variety of tumors, with low intrinsic toxicity. Cisplatin (DDP) is currently the first-line drug for the treatment of oral cancer; however, its clinical efficacy is impeded by chemoresistance and negligible side effects. Whether the combined use of CAP and DDP has a synergistic antitumor effect on tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) cells and its underlying mechanisms remains unclear. The present study revealed that CAP reduced the activity of TSCC cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. We also observed changes in the mitochondrial functional structure of TSCC cells, along with the induction of mitochondrial apoptosis. Moreover, when CAP was combined with DDP, a synergistic cytotoxic effect on TSCC cells was observed, which had a significant impact on inducing apoptosis, inhibiting proliferation, and disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential in TSCC cells compared to the single-drug treatment and control groups. These effects are associated with TRPV1, a high-affinity CAP receptor. The combined use of CAP and DDP can activate the TRPV1 receptor, resulting in intracellular Ca2+ overload and activation of the calpain pathway, ultimately leading to mitochondrial apoptosis. This potential mechanism was validated in TSCC xenograft models. In conclusion, our findings clearly demonstrate that CAP exerts synergistic pro-apoptotic effects with DDP in TSCC through the calpain pathway mediated by TRPV1. Thus, CAP can be considered an effective adjuvant drug for DDP in the treatment of TSCC.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents and is associated with a range of detrimental consequences. Family, teachers, and friends are essential sources of social support for adolescents. Increased social support from these sources may reduce NSSI behaviors among adolescents. However, it is uncertain if each source of social support retains its significance when their influences are evaluated simultaneously, and how each source influences the others to impact NSSI behaviors. To address this gap, this research investigated the direct and indirect effects of each source of social support on adolescent NSSI using cross-lagged panel model (CLPM), as well as whether these relationships varied by sex. A total of 3098 Chinese adolescents with a range of 10 to 15 years old (Mage = 13.27, SD = 0.73, 42.4% girls) completed assessments on three waves across approximately two years. The results indicated that teacher support compared to family and friend support showed the strongest association with NSSI behaviors and mediated the relationship between family support and NSSI. These findings highlight teacher support as a hub in the role of social support on NSSI and emphasize the importance of the connections between teacher and family support.

Field-effect transistors (FETs) based on two-dimensional materials (2DMs) with atomically thin channels have emerged as a promising platform for beyond-silicon electronics. However, low carrier mobility in 2DM transistors driven by phonon scattering remains a critical challenge. To address this issue, we propose the controlled introduction of localized tensile strain as an effective means to inhibit electron-phonon scattering in 2DM. Strain is achieved by conformally adhering the 2DM via van der Waals forces to a dielectric layer previously nanoengineered with a gray-tone topography. Our results show that monolayer MoS2 FETs under tensile strain achieve an 8-fold increase in on-state current, reaching mobilities of 185 cm²/Vs at room temperature, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The present work on nanotopographic grayscale surface engineering and the use of high-quality dielectric materials has the potential to find application in the nanofabrication of photonic and nanoelectronic devices.

Bisphenol P (BPP) has been detected in human biological samples; however studies on its nephrotoxicity are scarce. Given the susceptibility of kidneys to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, there is an urgent need to investigate the renal toxicity of BPP. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of BPPs on the kidneys of C57BL/6 mice and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of renal damage using a combination of mouse renal transcriptomic data and human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). Mice were exposed to BPP (0, 0.3, 30, 3000 µg/kg bw/d) via gavage for 5 weeks. Renal injury was assessed based on changes in body and kidney weights, serum renal function indices, and histopathological examination. Transcriptomic analysis identified differentially expressed genes and pathways, whereas cellular assays were used to measure cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, and the expression of key genes and proteins. The results show that BPP exposure induces renal injury, as evidenced by increased body weight, abnormal renal function indices, and renal tissue damage. Transcriptomic analysis revealed alterations in genes and pathways related to oxidative stress, p53 signaling, autophagy, and apoptosis. Cellular experiments confirmed that BPP induces oxidative stress and apoptosis. Furthermore, BPP exposure significantly inhibits autophagy, potentially exacerbating apoptosis and contributing to kidney injury. Treatment with a ROS inhibitor (N-Acetylcysteine, NAC) mitigated BPP-induced autophagy inhibition and apoptosis, implicating oxidative stress as a key factor. BPP exposure may lead to renal injury through excessive ROS accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, autophagy inhibition, and increased apoptosis. The effects of NAC highlight the role of oxidative stress in BPP-induced nephrotoxicity. These findings enhance our understanding of BPP-induced nephrotoxicity and underscore the need to control BPP exposure to prevent renal disease. This study emphasized the importance of evaluating the safety of new Bisphenol A analogs, including BPP, in environmental toxicology.

It is still a challenge to construct single-atom level reduction and oxidation sites in single-component photocatalyst by manipulating coordination configuration for photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, the atomically dispersed asymmetric configuration of six-coordinated Co-S2O4 (two exposed S atoms, two OH groups, and two Co─O─Zn bonds) suspending on ZnIn2S4 nanosheets verified by combining experimental analysis with theoretical calculation, is applied into photocatalytic water splitting. The Co-S2O4 site immobilized by Vs acts as oxidation sites to guide electrons transferring to neighboring independent S atom, achieving efficient separation of reduction and oxidation sites. It is worth mentioning that stabilized Co-S2O4 configuration show dynamic structure evolution to highly active Co-S1O4 configuration (one exposed S atom, one OH group, and three Co─O─Zn bonds) in reaction, which lowers energy barrier of transition state for H2O activization. Ultimately, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for water splitting (H2: 80.13 µmol g-1 h-1, O2: 37.81 µmol g-1 h-1) and outstanding stability than that of multicomponent photocatalysts due to dynamic and reversible evolution between stable Co-S2O4 configuration and active Co-S1O4 configuration. This work demonstrates new cognitions on immobilized strategy through vacancy inducing, manipulating coordination configuration, and dynamic evolution mechanism of single-atom level catalytic site in photocatalytic water splitting.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in early adolescence has been amply documented. However, there has been little research on the progression of NSSI over time. Most studies have focused on the risk factors for NSSI, with less attention devoted to understanding the role of protective factors. This paper aimed to expand existing knowledge about the development of NSSI, with an emphasis on the impacts of protective factors such as social support and socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: A total of 436 adolescents completed self-report surveys that addressed social support including friend, family, and teacher support, objective and subjective SES, and NSSI at three different points in time for 2 years. RESULTS: Latent growth curve analyses revealed that NSSI increased across early adolescence to mid-adolescence. Support from friends and family negatively predicted adolescents' initial NSSI level. Furthermore, subjective SES negatively predicted the rate of NSSI. CONCLUSIONS: These findings contribute to an understanding of the influences of both social support and SES on NSSI over time. NSSI interventions and education should include considerations of both the value of support from friends and family as well as subjective SES.

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis employing non-precious metal electrocatalysts is a promising strategy for achieving sustainable hydrogen production. However, it still suffers from many challenges, including sluggish alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, insufficient activity and limited lifetime of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for ampere-level-current-density alkaline HER. Here, we report an efficient alkaline HER strategy at industrial-level current density wherein a flexible WS2 superstructure is designed to serve as the cathode catalyst for AEM water electrolysis. The superstructure features bond-free van der Waals interaction among the low Young's modulus nanosheets to ensure excellent mechanical flexibility, as well as a stepped edge defect structure of nanosheets to realize high catalytic activity and a favorable reaction interface micro-environment. The unique flexible WS2 superstructure can effectively withstand the impact of high-density gas-liquid exchanges and facilitate mass transfer, endowing excellent long-term durability under industrial-scale current density. An AEM electrolyser containing this catalyst at the cathode exhibits a cell voltage of 1.70 V to deliver a constant catalytic current density of 1 A cm-2 over 1000 h with a negligible decay rate of 9.67 µV h-1.

BACKGROUND: There are a growing number of studies on the effect of acupuncture on glial cells in the central nervous system; however, there are few related bibliometric analyses in this area. Therefore, the purpose of this bibliometric study was to visualize the literature on acupuncture-regulated glial cells. METHODS: On November 23, 2022, regular and review articles on acupuncture and glial cell-related research were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The R package "bibliometrix" was used to summarize the main findings, count the occurrences of the top keywords, visualize the international collaboration network, and generate a 3-field plot. The VOSviewer software was used to conduct both co-authorship and co-occurrence analyses. CiteSpace was used to identify the best references and keywords with the highest citation rates. RESULTS: Overall, 348 publications on acupuncture and glial cells were included. The publications were primarily from China, Korea, and the United States of America. The majority of publications were found in relevant journals. Apart from "acupuncture" and "glial cells," the most frequently used keywords were "neuroinflammation," "hyperalgesia," and "pain." CONCLUSION: This bibliometric study mapped a fundamental knowledge structure comprising countries, institutions, authors, journals, and articles in the research fields of acupuncture and glial cells over the last 3 decades. These results provide a comprehensive perspective on the wider landscape of this research area.

A cellulose-based carbon aerogel (CTN) loaded with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was prepared using sol-gel, freeze-drying, and high-temperature carbonization methods. The formation of the sol-gel was carried out through a one-pot method using refining papermaking pulp, tetrabutyl titanate, and urea as raw materials and hectorite as a cross-linking and reinforcing agent. Due to the cross-linking ability of hectorite, the carbonized aerogel maintained a porous structure and had a large specific surface area with low density (0.0209 g/cm3). The analysis of XRD, XPS, and Raman spectra revealed that the titanium dioxide (TiO2) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were uniformly distributed in the CTN, while TEM and SEM observations demonstrated the uniformly distributed three-dimensional porous structure of CTN. The photocatalytic activity of the CTN was determined according to its ability to degrade rhodamine B. The removal rate reached 89% under visible light after 120 min. In addition, the CTN was still stable after five reuse cycles. The proposed catalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light conditions.

Basic standard samples are integral for ensuring consistency and quality control of tea. Understanding the real reasons behind the hierarchical system of Shuixian tea grades in the Chinese national standard is crucial to the scientific development of tea standardization. In this investigation, different grade samples of Shuixian tea strictly conformed to the Chinese national standard, serving as the research objects. Sensory evaluation, SEM and HS-SPME-GC-MS were employed to comprehensively analyze the aroma characteristics. The odor profiles of special grade samples predominantly featured floral and fruity aromas, which attributed to compounds such as geraniol, indole, phenylethyl alcohol. Additionally, hexanal, (E)-3-hexen-1-ol and other compounds contributed to fruity and sweet aroma in first grade. Notably, the predominant roasted and sweet aromas of second grade were attributed to compounds including pyridine, 2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine. This study lays a solid foundation for the scientific development of Chinese national standards and international standard system.

To explore the differential cohort situation between preschool development of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and naturally conceived infants. From April 2014 to June 2022, 60 preschool IVFs were selected as the research subjects for follow-up at the pediatric health clinic of hospital's prevention and health department. They were set as the experimental group (Group S), and 60 naturally conceived infants of the same age were selected as the control group (Group Z). Data from both groups were collected through telephone follow-up and other methods. No significant difference showed between the 2 groups in age specific height, age specific weight, Gesell developmental score, Denver developmental screening test screening results, intellectual development index, and motor development index (P > .05). The influence of birth environment factors such as family background and maternal education level on children's height and weight was not significant (P > .05), while maternal education level had a significant impact on children's intellectual development index (P < .05). No significant difference showed in the development of preschool children in IVF compared to naturally conceived children, and the level of parental education has a significant impact on children's mental and motor development.

This study aims to develop an effective bivalent subunit vaccine that is promising to prevent both porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). The receptor-binding domains (RBDs) of PDCoV and PEDV were fused and cloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pCDNA3.1(+). The fusion protein PDCoV-RBD-PEDV-RBD (pdRBD-peRBD) was expressed by the ExpiCHOTM expression system and purified. Mice were immunized with the fusion protein at three different doses (10, 20, and 30 µg). The humoral immune response and cellular immune response induced by the fusion protein were evaluated by ELISA and flow cytometry. The neutralization titers of the serum of immunized mice against PDCoV and PEDV were determined by the microneutralization test. The results showed that high levels of IgG antibodies were induced in the three different dose groups after booster immunization, and there was no significant difference in the antibody level between different dose groups, indicating that the immunization dose of 10 µg could achieve the fine immune effect. The results of flow cytometry showed that the immunization groups demonstrated increased proportion of CD3+CD4+ T cells and decreased proportion of CD3+CD8+ T cells, which was consistent with the expectation about the humoral immune response induced by the subunit vaccine. At the same time, the levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, and interferon (IFN)-γ in the serum were determined. The results showed that the fusion protein induced both humoral immune effect and cellular immune response. The results of the neutralization test showed that the antibody induced by 10 µg fusion protein neutralized both PDCoV and PEDV in vitro, with the titers of 1:179.25 and 1:141.21, respectively. The above results suggested that the pdRBD-peRBD could induce a high level of humoral immune response at a dose of 10 µg, and the induced antibody could neutralize both PDCoV and PEDV. Therefore, the fusion protein pdRBD-peRBD is expected to be an effective subunit vaccine that can simultaneously prevent PDCoV and PEDV.

Background: When resuscitating patients with septic shock, cerebrovascular reactivity parameters are calculated by monitoring regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) using near-infrared spectroscopy to determine the optimal blood pressure. Here, we aimed to analyze the impact of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure management on the incidence of delirium and the prognosis of patients with septic shock. Methods: This prospective randomized controlled clinical study was conducted in the Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, China. Fifty-one patients with septic shock (December 2020-May 2022) were enrolled and randomly allocated to the experimental (n=26) or control group (n=25). Using the ICM+ software, we monitored the dynamic changes in rSO2 and mean arterial pressure (MAP) and calculated the cerebrovascular reactivity parameter tissue oxygen reactivity index to determine the optimal blood pressure to maintain normal cerebral autoregulation function during resuscitation in the experimental group. The control group was treated according to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines. Differences in the incidence of delirium and 28-day mortality between the two groups were compared, and the risk factors were analyzed. Results: The 51 patients, including 39 male and 12 female, had a mean age of (57.0±14.9) years. The incidence of delirium was 40.1% (23/51), and the 28-day mortality rate was 29.4% (15/51). The mean MAP during the first 24 h of intensive care unit (ICU) admission was higher ([84.5±12.2] mmHg vs. [77.4±11.8] mmHg, P=0.040), and the incidence of delirium was lower (30.8% vs. 60.0%, P=0.036) in the experimental group than in the control group. The use of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure (odds ratio [OR]=0.090, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.009 to 0.923, P=0.043) and length of ICU stay (OR=1.473, 95% CI: 1.093 to 1.985, P=0.011) were risk factors for delirium during septic shock. Vasoactive drug dose (OR=8.445, 95% CI: 1.26 to 56.576, P=0.028) and partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) (OR=0.958, 95% CI: 0.921 to 0.996, P=0.032) were the risk factors for 28-day mortality. Conclusions: The use of cerebral autoregulation-directed optimal blood pressure management during shock resuscitation reduces the incidence of delirium in patients with septic shock. BACKGROUND: Childbirth pain is a physiological phenomenon during the delivery process, the intense pain of childbirth could bring harmful effects to pregnant women and their babies. Assessment of childbirth pain is the first step in childbirth pain intervention. Some pain assessment scales have shortcomings such as interfering in the birthing process and affecting pain perception during delivery, while the Rating Scale of Pain Expression during Childbirth (ESVADOPA) could be used as an auxiliary scale to compensate for these shortcomings. The purpose of this study was to introduce the ESVADOPA and adapt it among Chinese pregnant women to check on the psychometric properties of the translated version of ESVADOPA. METHODS: A new translation model based on Brislin's classical back translation model was used to translate and cross-cultural adapt the ESVADOPA. During June 2021 and June 2022, pregnant women at Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University were invited. In the stage of translation and cross-culturally adaptation, 18 midwives and 30 pregnant women were invited to participate in the first round of pre-experiment. And in the second round of pre-experiment, 15 midwives and 20 pregnant women were invited to participate. The Chinese version of ESVADOPA was tested on a group of pregnant women (N = 487). Construct validity was evaluated by exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and criterion-related validity. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach's α coefficient, McDonald Omega, Spearman-Brown split-half reliability and Guttman split-half reliability. RESULTS: The item statistical analysis and construct validity resulted in six items and one factor that explained 61.064% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the data fit the one-factor structure. Criterion-related validity indicated that the scale is significantly and positively correlated with the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Cronbach's α coefficient, McDonald Omega, Spearman-Brown split-half reliability, and Guttman split-half reliability of the Chinese version of ESVADOPA were 0.868, 0.896, 0.845, 0.842, respectively. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the ESVADOPA with good reliability and validity data could be used to assess the pain rating of pregnant women during childbirth without interfering in the birthing process.
