RESUMEN

Reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) is commonly employed for soil remediation in greenhouse cultivation. However, its influence on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil remains uncertain. This study investigated the dynamic changes in soil communities, potential bacterial pathogens, and ARG profiles under various organic material treatments during RSD, including distillers' grains, potato peel, peanut vine, and peanut vine combined with charcoal. Results revealed that applying diverse organic materials in RSD significantly altered bacterial community composition and diminished the relative abundance of potential bacterial pathogens (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of high-risk ARGs decreased by 10.7%-30.6% after RSD treatments, the main decreased ARG subtypes were AAC(3)_Via, dfrA1, ErmB, lnuB, aadA. Actinobacteria was the primary host of ARGs and was suppressed by RSD. Soil physicochemical properties, such as total nitrogen, soil pH, total carbon, were crucial factors affecting ARG profiles. Our findings demonstrated that RSD treatment inhibited pathogenic bacteria and could be an option for reducing high-risk ARG proliferation in soil.

Alzheimer's disease is the most frequent form of dementia characterized by the deposition of amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau. Targeting amyloid-beta plaques has been a primary direction for developing Alzheimer's disease treatments in the last decades. However, existing drugs targeting amyloid-beta plaques have not fully yielded the expected results in the clinic, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. Increasing evidence unravels that astrocyte morphology and function alter in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients, with dysregulated astrocytic purinergic receptors, particularly the P2Y1 receptor, all of which constitute the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. These receptors are not only crucial for maintaining normal astrocyte function but are also highly implicated in neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease. This review delves into recent insights into the association between P2Y1 receptor and Alzheimer's disease to underscore the potential neuroprotective role of P2Y1 receptor in Alzheimer's disease by mitigating neuroinflammation, thus offering promising avenues for developing drugs for Alzheimer's disease and potentially contributing to the development of more effective treatments.

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a major environmental risk, and green plants can mitigate air pollution by regulating their enzymatic activity, osmoregulatory substances, photosynthetic pigments, and other biochemical characteristics. The present investigation aims to evaluate the mitigation potential of five common evergreen tree species (Photinia serrulata, Ligustrum lucidum, Eriobotrya japonica, Euonymus japonicus, Pittosporum tobira) against air pollution and to assess the effect of dust retention on plant physiological functions exposed to three different pollution levels (road, campus, and park). The results found that the amount of dust retained per unit leaf area of the plants was proportional to the mass concentration of atmospheric particulate matter in the environment, and that dust accumulation was higher on the road and campus than in the park. There were significant differences in dust retention among the five tree species, with the highest leaf dust accumulation observed for E. japonica (5.45 g·m-2), and the lowest for P. tobira (1.53 g·m-2). In addition, the increase in PM adsorption by different plants was uneven with increasing pollution levels, with significant decreases in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic and transpiration rate. From a physiological perspective, P. tobira exhibited greater potential to respond to PM pollution. Biochemical indicators suggested that PM pollution caused changes in plant protective enzyme activities, with a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities, as well as promoting membrane lipid peroxidation, and appropriate stress also enables plants to counteract oxidative damage. In particular, PM exposure also induced stomatal constriction. Overall, PM retention was significantly associated with physiological and photosynthetic traits. In conclusion, our study contributes to the understanding of the effects of PM on plant physiology. Furthermore, it also provides insights into the selection of plants that are tolerant to PM pollution.

Flurbiprofen axetil is commonly utilized in clinical practice as one of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is included in multimodal analgesia regimens postbreast cancer surgery. Numerous NSAIDs have been studied for their potential to both promote and inhibit cancer. Given the variability in their effects on tumors, further investigation into the specific role of flurbiprofen axetil is warranted. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of flurbiprofen axetil on basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) metastasis and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved. The BLBC metastasis mouse model was established by caudal vein injection of tumor cells. The lung metastasis of breast cancer in mice and the effect of flurbiprofen axetil were assessed by in vivo bioluminescence imaging, hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry. In vitro, the results of flurbiprofen axetil on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells and BT-549 human breast cancer cells were assessed by colony formation assay and transwell assay. The effects of flurbiprofen axetil on several tumor metastasis-related signaling pathway proteins were examined by western blot, and the reversal extent of the flurbiprofen axetil effect by Ro 67-7476 (ERK phosphorylation agonist) was detected by transwell assay. The results showed that flurbiprofen axetil significantly inhibited BLBC lung metastasis in mice. Flurbiprofen axetil similarly inhibited breast cancer cell migration and invasion in vitro but did not affect their proliferation. Mechanistic investigations have revealed that flurbiprofen axetil exerts a noteworthy inhibitory influence on the MEK/ERK pathway while exhibiting no significant alteration in the expression of other pathway proteins intricately associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In conclusion, the inhibitory effect of flurbiprofen axetil on BLBC metastasis is characterized by its selectivity in targeting the MEK/ERK signaling pathway rather than exerting a broad impact on the global signaling pathway.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP) spintronics has become a promising research field, as it provides a new precisely manipulable degree of freedom. Recently, by utilizing the spin Seebeck effect and inverse spin-Hall effect measurements, we have discovered substantial magnon injection and transport in Pt/OIHP/Y3Fe5O12 nonlocalized structure. In theory, hyperfine interaction (HFI) is considered to have an important role in the magnon transport of OIHP, but there is no clear experimental evidence reported so far. We report increased spin Seebeck coefficient and lengthened magnon diffusion length in deuterated- (D-) OIHP films that have weaker HFI strength compared with protonated- (H-) OIHP. Consequently, D-MAPbBr3 film, as a non-ferromagnetic spacer, achieves long magnon diffusion length at room temperature (close to 120.3 nm). Our finding provides valuable insights into understanding magnon transport in OIHP films and paves the way for the use of OIHPs in multifunctional applications.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the short-term effects and safety of adjunct Suxiao Jiuxin Pills (SJPs) on conventional therapy in chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) patients who are intolerant to the adverse effects of long-acting nitrates. METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 174 CCS participants from eight clinical study centers in China were included in the modified intention-to-treat analyses. Participants with CCS and intolerance to the adverse effects of long-acting nitrates were recruited and randomized to either the SJPs or the placebo group for a duration of 4 weeks. RESULTS: Compared to the placebo group, the SJPs group showed a significant improvement in the efficacy rate after 4 weeks (OR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.32 to 4.47, P = 0.004). Besides, individuals without a history of alcohol consumption showed a greater improvement in the SAQ summary score compared to those with a history of alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION: Adjunctive SJPs enhance the effectiveness of short-term conventional anti-angina treatment for patients with CCS who experience intolerance to long-acting nitrates, without significant adverse effects during application. A facile catalyst-free sulfonylation of phenoxazine with sulfonyl hydrazides was efficiently developed in H2O/HFIP without any catalyst. This metal- and catalyst-free protocol is suitable for aromatic and aliphatic reagents to afford the corresponding sulfones in moderate to high yields. A gram-scale experiment was performed to assess the practicability of the method.

Constructing stable, portable sensors and revealing their mechanisms is challenging. Ion metal-organic frameworks (IMOFs) are poised to serve as highly effective electrochemical sensors for detecting organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), leveraging their unique charge properties. In this work, an amino-modified IMOF was constructed and combined with near-field communication (NFC) technology to develop a portable, touchless, and battery-free electrochemical biosensor NH2-IMOF@CS@AChE. -NH2 in NH2-IMOF gives the framework a higher electropositivity compared to IMOF, enhancing the electrostatic attraction with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which is beneficial for immobilizing AChE. Furthermore, the uncoordinated O atoms and the (CH3)2NH2+ groups in NH2-IMOF help to form stronger bonds with AChE through hydrogen bonds. The results showed a wide linear response range of 1 × 10-15 to 1 × 10-9 M and a low detection limit of 1.24 × 10-13 M for glyphosate (Gly) in the practical detection of OPs. Additionally, electrochemical biosensor arrays were constructed to effectively identify and distinguish multiple OPs on the basis of their unique differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) electrochemical signals. This work provides a simple and effective solution for on-site OP analysis and can be widely applied in food safety and water quality monitoring.

As a subcategory of pyroelectric materials, hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics possess substantial pyroelectric properties and exceptional light absorption characteristics, demonstrating significant potential in the photo-pyroelectric (PPE) detection field. Despite the significant advantages of hybrid perovskite ferroelectric materials for PPE detection, both the lead issue and the weak stability from van der Waals interactions in monoamines have hindered their further application. Here, 1D lead-free ferroelectric (BDA)SbBr5 (1, where BDA is 1,4-butanediammonium) is fabricated to achieve PPE detection. Compound 1 exhibits significant symmetry breaking attributed to the order-disorder transition of organic cations and octahedral distortions. Specifically, compound 1 enables broad-spectrum PPE detection from UV to near-infrared (377-980 nm) and further realizes switchable pyroelectric current after polarization. More importantly, the stability of the pyroelectric current is preserved without degradation over three months, attributed to the hydrogen bonding interactions of butanediamide. Further theoretical calculations of compound 1 reveal a more negative energy of formation than its monoamine homologs (BA)2SbBr5 (where BA is n-butylammonium), which is evidence of its stability. These findings highlight 1 as a promising candidate for high-stability and environmentally friendly PPE wide-spectrum detection, representing a noteworthy advancement in the ferroelectric field.

Background: It is estimated that ∼60% of people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are undetected or undiagnosed, with higher rates of underdiagnosis in low-to middle-income areas with limited medical resources. To promote health equity, we have developed a web-based tool that utilizes easy-to-collect clinical data to enhance AD detection rate in primary care settings. Methods: This study was leveraged on the data collected from participants of the Australian Imaging, Biomarker & Lifestyle (AIBL) study and the Religious Orders Study and Memory and Aging Project (ROSMAP). The study included three phases: (1) constructing and evaluating a model on retrospective cohort data (1407 AIBL participants), (2) performing simulated trials to assess model accuracy (30 AIBL participants) and missing data tolerability (30 AIBL participants), and (3) external evaluation using a non-Australian dataset (500 ROSMAP participants). The auto-score machine learning algorithm was employed to develop the Florey Dementia Risk Score (FDRS). All the simulated trials and evaluation were performed using a web-based FDRS tool. Findings: FDRS achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of approximately 0.82 [95% CI, 0.75-0.88], with a sensitivity of 0.74 [0.60-0.86] and a specificity of 0.73 [0.70-0.79]. The accuracy of the simulated pilot trial for 30 AIBL participants with complete record was 87% (26/30 correct), while it only slightly decreased (80.0-83.3%, depending on imputation methods) for another 30 AIBL participants with one or two missing data. FDRS achieved an AUC of 0.82 [0.77-0.86] of 500 ROSMAP participants. Interpretation: The FDRS tool offers a potential low-cost solution to AD screening in primary care. The present study warrants future trials of FDRS for optimization and to confirm its generalizability across a more diverse population, especially people in low-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to explore the effects of the combination of noise reduction earplugs with white noise and rational emotional therapy on the emotional states of inpatients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: The study selected 152 CRC patients who received inpatient treatment in our hospital from January 2020 to January 2022 as the research objects. According to different nursing intervention modes, these patients were divided into the observation group (OG, n = 73, conventional nursing + noise reduction earplugs with white noise + rational emotional therapy) and the control group (CG, n = 79, conventional nursing) to compare the emotional status, sleep quality, and other indicators between the two groups. RESULTS: After 2 and 6 weeks of intervention, the severity of illness and global impression in the OG were notably lower than those in the CG. The OG had remarkably higher efficacy indexes than the CG (p < 0.05). The OG had overtly lower Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale (MADRS) scores and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores than the CG (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The combination of noise reduction earplugs with white noise and rational emotional therapy can improve the emotion and sleep states of patients, with certain positive effects, which can be used as a potential nursing plan for CRC patients.

Plant extracts, derived from various natural sources, encompass primary and secondary metabolites, which include plant polysaccharides, polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenes, and volatile oils. These compounds exhibit a range of biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial functions. Currently, polyphenols and other bioactive compounds are being incorporated into the diets of farm animals, fish, and pets to promote health benefits. Despite this, the application and potential of plant extracts in canine and feline nutrition have not been comprehensively explored. Many aspects of the mechanisms underlying the action of these plant metabolites remain to be analyzed and elucidated. Furthermore, leveraging natural plant extracts for the treatment of clinical conditions in dogs and cats is a crucial component of clinical nutrition. Consequently, this review aims to highlight the impact of plant extracts on overall health, gastrointestinal health, immune health, cardiovascular health, redox balance, and pathology in dogs and cats.

Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, and represent an increasing threat for human and animal health. Considering the complex natural environments of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, we expect the diverse tick species in this region. Here, we conduct a field survey on parasitic and host-seeking ticks. A total of 10,419 ticks were collected, which belonged to nine species of four genera. There were significant differences in terms of vegetation index, altitude, and seven climatic factors among the four tick genera -Hyalomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Ixodes, except between Haemaphysalis and Ixodes, where no significant differences were observed in these factors. The ecological niche modelling revealed that the suitable habitats for Hyalomma asiaticum was in the northwest Ningxia, with annual ground surface temperature as the most important factor. The suitable area for Dermacentor nuttalli was in the southwest and eastern regions of Ningxia with elevation as the highest contribution. D. silvarum was best suited to the southern Ningxia also with elevation as the most important factor. The four tick species including Haemaphysalis longicornis, Hae. qinghaiensis, Hae. japonica, and Ixodes persulcatus were best suited to the southernmost Ningxia with annual precipitation as the main factors for Hae. longicornis and elevation for the other three ticks. The results of predicted potential distribution of different tick species provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the region. Furthermore, the subsequent impacts of the Greening Program to regain forests and grasslands from former agricultural lands in Ningxia on tick population dynamics deserve further investigation.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of body condition score (BCS) of cull cows on carcass characteristics, carcass-cutting yields, profitability, and tenderness development for the longissimus lumborum and psoas major muscles. During a 5-wk period (May-June 2023), 10 boner cull cows (BCS 4 to 6) and 10 leaner cull cows (BCS 1 to 3) were purchased at a commercial auction market. Live conformation, carcass characteristics, weights of fabricated cuts, tenderness, pH decline, and temperature decline were recorded following slaughter. Carcasses were fabricated into the following cuts: knuckle, inside round, outside round, eye of round, strip loin, top sirloin, bottom sirloin flap, tenderloin, flank, ribeye roll, chuck tender, and brisket, whereas lean was separated into lean and fat components. Beef processor returns for boner cows were calculated as the sum of USDA Carlot Report values for the subprimal cuts, trim, bone, and drop value subtracted by actual live costs at the auction market whereas beef processor returns for leaner cows were calculated as the sum of USDA Carlot Report values for the trim, bone, and drop value subtracted by actual live costs at the auction market. Carcass and merchandizing value parameters were analyzed using a completely randomized design with a fixed effect of classification (leaner or boner) and a random effect of slaughter day. Live weight was used as a covariant for all carcass and merchandizing value parameters due to the pronounced effect of live weight for most parameters. Temperature decline, pH decline, shear force, and cooking loss parameters were analyzed using a completely randomized design with a fixed effect of classification (leaner or boner) and a random effect of slaughter day. Boner cows were found to be heavier for both live and carcass weights when compared with leaner cows. In addition, backfat thickness was 0.39 cm greater (P = 0.03), and ribeye area was 9.17 cm2 (P = 0.05) greater for boner cows compared with leaner cows. This resulted in boner cows yielding larger subprimal cuts and a greater amount of lean trim, which in turn generated more beef processor revenue. However, specific consideration should be provided for profitability as the ability to market subprimal cuts is highly dependent on muscle size, fat deposition, meat quality, and market prices for both boner and leaner cows.

Plant derived polysaccharides can enhance immune function in the human body, effectively prevent diseases, and reduce the probability of bacterial infections. Ginkgo crude polysaccharide (GCP) was obtained from Ginkgo biloba by ultrasonic-assisted hot water extraction. Our data showed that the best extraction conditions of GCP were as follows: extraction temperature 80 °C, ultrasonic time 35 min, extraction time 3 h, and solid‒liquid ratio 1:30. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) data showed that this polysaccharide might be an acidic polysaccharide with a carboxylic acid ring structure. Further studies implied that GCP was mainly composed of glucose, galacturonic acid, rhamnose, galactose and arabinose, accounting for 39.45 %, 25.01 %, 15.40 %, 11.94 % and 4.25 %, respectively. 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/mL GCP reduced the release of inflammatory factors in RAW264.7 cells via inhibition of the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B (NF-κB) signalling pathway. GCP was separated into five components with different molecular weights by an ultrafiltration membrane. Our data showed that GPa with a molecular weight ≥100 kDa was the main component of GCP. 1 mg/mL GPa, GPb, GPc and GPd had anti-inflammatory activities, and 1 mg/mL GPa had the best anti-inflammatory activities. Our results preliminarily reveal the elements and biological activity of GCP, which will provide a reference for the development of Ginkgo biloba.

The on-demand gene regulation is crucial for extensively exploring specific gene functions and developing personalized gene therapeutics, which shows great promise in precision medicines. Although some nucleic acid-based gene regulatory tools (antisense oligonucleotides and small interfering RNAs) are devised for achieving on-demand activation, the introduction of chemical modifications may cause undesired side effects, thereby impairing the gene regulatory efficacy. Herein, a methyl-engineered DNAzyme (MeDz) is developed for the visualization of endogenous alkyltransferase (AGT) and the simultaneous self-sufficiently on-demand gene regulation. The catalytic activity of DNAzyme can be efficiently blocked by O6-methylguanine (O6MeG) modification and specifically restored via the AGT-mediated DNA-repairing pathway. This simply designed MeDz is demonstrated to reveal AGT of varying expression levels in different cells, opening the possibility to explore the AGT-related biological processes. Moreover, the AGT-guided MeDz exhibits cell-selective regulation on the human early growth response-1 (EGR-1) gene, with efficient gene repression in breast cancer cells and low effectiveness in normal cells. The proposed MeDz offers an attractive strategy for on-demand gene regulation, displaying great potential in biomedical applications.

Background: Generative Large language models (LLMs) represent a significant advancement in natural language processing, achieving state-of-the-art performance across various tasks. However, their application in clinical settings using real electronic health records (EHRs) is still rare and presents numerous challenges. Objective: This study aims to systematically review the use of generative LLMs, and the effectiveness of relevant techniques in patient care-related topics involving EHRs, summarize the challenges faced, and suggest future directions. Methods: A Boolean search for peer-reviewed articles was conducted on May 19th, 2024 using PubMed and Web of Science to include research articles published since 2023, which was one month after the release of ChatGPT. The search results were deduplicated. Multiple reviewers, including biomedical informaticians, computer scientists, and a physician, screened the publications for eligibility and conducted data extraction. Only studies utilizing generative LLMs to analyze real EHR data were included. We summarized the use of prompt engineering, fine-tuning, multimodal EHR data, and evaluation matrices. Additionally, we identified current challenges in applying LLMs in clinical settings as reported by the included studies and proposed future directions. Results: The initial search identified 6,328 unique studies, with 76 studies included after eligibility screening. Of these, 67 studies (88.2%) employed zero-shot prompting, five of them reported 100% accuracy on five specific clinical tasks. Nine studies used advanced prompting strategies; four tested these strategies experimentally, finding that prompt engineering improved performance, with one study noting a non-linear relationship between the number of examples in a prompt and performance improvement. Eight studies explored fine-tuning generative LLMs, all reported performance improvements on specific tasks, but three of them noted potential performance degradation after fine-tuning on certain tasks. Only two studies utilized multimodal data, which improved LLM-based decision-making and enabled accurate rare disease diagnosis and prognosis. The studies employed 55 different evaluation metrics for 22 purposes, such as correctness, completeness, and conciseness. Two studies investigated LLM bias, with one detecting no bias and the other finding that male patients received more appropriate clinical decision-making suggestions. Six studies identified hallucinations, such as fabricating patient names in structured thyroid ultrasound reports. Additional challenges included but were not limited to the impersonal tone of LLM consultations, which made patients uncomfortable, and the difficulty patients had in understanding LLM responses. Conclusion: Our review indicates that few studies have employed advanced computational techniques to enhance LLM performance. The diverse evaluation metrics used highlight the need for standardization. LLMs currently cannot replace physicians due to challenges such as bias, hallucinations, and impersonal responses.

To address the issue of high-dose treatment agents in magnetic hyperthermia-mediated multi-model tumor therapy, a unique iron-based theranostic nanoenzyme with excellent magnetothermal and catalytic properties was constructed. By using a high-temperature arc method, the iron carbon nanoparticles (MF1-3) with a particle size between 13.7 and 27.6 nm and shell thickness between 1 and 5 nm were prepared. After screening, we selected MF3 as the magnetic core due to its high Ms. value and excellent thermal properties. Under the magneto-photo dual thermal conditions, MF3 exhibited a remarkable specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4917 W/g, which was 20 times more than that of iron oxide. Notably, MF3 also exhibited best peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic in pH 5.0 and maintained stable catalytic performance at 45 °C. Considering the "starvation" strategy of cutting off the energy supply to tumor cells and killing them, the glucose oxidase (GOX) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) was further grafted onto MF3, forming the MF3/GOX/COS. This multifunctional therapeutic nanoenzyme not only exhibited significant peroxidase-like activity, but also had glucose decomposition and glutathione (GSH) consumption capabilities. The thermal effect significantly promoted the uptake of MF3/GOX/COS by 4T1 cells, and the IC50 value of MF3/GOX/COS reached low to 3.75 µg/mL. In vivo anti-tumor experiment, compared with single treatment methods, the combined therapy of MF3/GOX/COS mediated magneto-photo thermotherapy (M-PTT) and starvation therapy (ST) exhibited higher tumor inhibition rate of 82.1 % by increased cell apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. Overall, MF3/GOX/COS therapeutic nanoenzyme combined the advantages of nano-catalysis, M-PTT and ST, providing a solution for achieving sustained, stable, and effective tumor inhibition rates at lower dose levels.

Ferroptosis is an appealing cancer therapy strategy based on the H2O2-involved Fenton reaction to produce toxic •OH for lipid peroxidation. However, intracellular H2O2 is easily consumed and results in a deficient Fenton reaction. This obstacle can be overcome by traditional chemotherapeutic drugs for H2O2 supplements. Moreover, a recent work illustrated that dihydroartemisinin (DHA) could promote ferroptosis against tumoral cells, particularly in the presence of ferrous compounds. To achieve combined chemotherapy and ferroptosis, a nanocarrier (TKNPDHA-Fc) was constructed by using thioketal (TK)-bridged paclitaxel prodrug (PEG-TK-PTX) and ferrocene (Fc)-conjugated PEG-Fc, where DHA was encapsulated by a hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. Upon cellular uptake, TKNPDHA-Fc could facilitate PTX release through TK breakage under an excess H2O2 microenvironment. Owing to the loss of the hydrophobic PTX component, TKNPDHA-Fc underwent a rapid dissociation for improving DHA to act as a ferroptotic inducer along with Fe supplied from Fc. Moreover, both the chemotherapy-induced reactive oxygen species and the •OH produced from reinforced ferroptosis further stimulated the TK cleavage. The "self-catalytic" loop of TKNPDHA-Fc remarkably improved the antitumor performance in vivo via combined mechanisms, and its tumor inhibition rate reached 78.3%. This work highlights the contribution of ROS-responsive and self-catalytic nanoplatforms for enhancing the potential of combined chemotherapy and ferroptosis for cancer therapy in the future.

BACKGROUND: Liver cancer (LC) screening, such as AFP test and abdominal ultrasound, is an effective way to prevent LC, one of the most common cancers worldwide. Despite the proven screening benefits, screening participation among high-risk populations for LC remains low. This suggests that targeted, systematic, and effective interventions should be provided to improve knowledge and awareness related to LC screening, enhance screening intentions, and thereby promote screening behaviors. Telephone is people's main medium of daily communication and mHealth-based programs offer a potential and effective solution for promoting health behaviors. The purpose of this study is to develop and implement a mHealth (WeChat app) based intervention guided by Fogg's Behavior Model (FBM) to augment the knowledge of LC prevention among people at risk of LC and enhance their motivation for screening, and to validate its effectiveness in improving LC screening. METHODS: We propose a two-arm, single-blind randomized controlled trial with 82 at-risk individuals of LC, delivering a 6-month mHealth-based intervention program with optional health counseling. Recruitment will be through tertiary hospitals and community organizations in 4 districts in Heng Yang. In total, 82 individuals at high risk for HCC will be randomized 1:1 to intervention or control (usual care) groups. The intervention group will receive intervention, whose contents are based on the FBM model, via multiple forms of media including PowerPoint presentation, multimedia video, health information booklet and screening message, which is delivered in the WeChat Applet. Control dyads will be provided with usual health education. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline and post-intervention. DISCUSSION: The findings of this study will provide evidence of the benefits of utilizing mHealth-based approaches in intervention development to enhance the effectiveness of screening adherence for high-risk people of LC. Further, the findings would provide reference to the potential incorporation of the targeted intervention in local community organizations.
