RESUMEN

Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes respiratory tract infections, affecting both children and adults, with varying degrees of severity ranging from mild to life-threatening. In recent years, a new class of regulatory RNAs called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been discovered to play crucial roles in regulating gene expression in the host. Research on lncRNAs has greatly expanded our understanding of cellular functions involving RNAs, and it has significantly increased the range of functions of lncRNAs. In lung cancer, transcripts associated with lncRNAs have been identified as regulators of airway and lung inflammation in a process involving protein complexes. An excessive immune response and antibacterial immunity are closely linked to the pathogenesis of M. pneumoniae. The relationship between lncRNAs and M. pneumoniae infection largely involves lncRNAs that participate in antibacterial immunity. This comprehensive review aimed to examine the dysregulation of lncRNAs during M. pneumoniae infection, highlighting the latest advancements in our understanding of the biological functions and molecular mechanisms of lncRNAs in the context of M. pneumoniae infection and indicating avenues for investigating lncRNAs-related therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND: In patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy caused by ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, high cord signal (HCS) is frequently observed. However, limited research has investigated the variations in HCS improvement resulting from different surgical approaches. This study aims to explore the potential relationship between the choice of surgical approach and the postoperative improvement of intramedullary high signal in ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) patients. METHODS: We extensively reviewed the patients' medical records, based on which demographic information such as gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) were recorded, and assessed the severity of the patients' neurological status preoperatively and postoperatively by using the Japanese Orthopedic Association score (JOAs), focusing on consecutive preoperative and postoperative Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2WI measurements, to study the statistical correlation between the improvement of HCS and the choice of surgical approach. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in demographic, imaging parameters, and clinical symptoms between patients undergoing anterior and posterior surgery (p > 0.05, Table 1). However, both improvement in JOAs (Recovery2) and improvement in HCS (CR2) were significantly better in the anterior surgery group two years after surgery (p < 0.05, Table 1). Multifactorial logistic regression analysis revealed that posterior surgery and higher preoperative signal change ratio (SCR) were identified as risk factors for poor HCS improvement at the two-year postoperative period (p < 0.05, Table 2). SVA = sagittal vertical axis. mK-line INT = modified K-line interval CONCLUSIONS: For patients with OPLL-induced cervical spondylotic myelopathy and intramedullary high signal, anterior removal of the ossified posterior longitudinal ligament and direct decompression offer a greater potential for regression of intramedullary high signal. At the same time, this anterior surgical strategy improves clinical neurologic function better than indirect decompression in the posterior approach.

Developing antibiotic-free treatment strategies to cope with the crisis on drug-resistant bacteria, are urgently needed. Antibiotics-independent physical approaches, especially the non-invasive phototherapies, worked through the assistance of photosensitizer (PS), have geared intensive attention and interests. Here, composite porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer/graphene oxide, denoted as GO-TAPP, combining the advantages of each component perfectly, was developed as broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. GO-TAPP, prepared via the self-oxidation coupling of tetraethynyl porphyrin on the surface of graphene oxide, could exert synergistic photothermal (PTT, ascribed to the graphene) and photodynamic (PDT, derived from the Porphyrin polymer) antimicrobial effectiveness. Both the in vivo and in vitro experiments have confirmed GO-TAPP are extremely potent against the Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) pathogens, which presents a remarkably enhanced sterilizing effect in comparison with its counterparts (the bare GO, and TAPP). Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of GO-TAPP could significantly accelerate the healing of open wound infected by bacterial. Altogether, this work proposed a new approach for the rational preparation of highly biocompatible graphene-based composite materials as antibiotic-free agents with synergistic antibacterial effect to combat bacterial infections.

BACKGROUND: Migrant and left-behind families are vulnerable in health services utilization, but little is known about their disparities in immunization of non-National Immunization Program (NIP) vaccines. This study aims to evaluate the immunization coverage, knowledge, satisfaction, and associated factors of non-NIP vaccines among local and migrant families in the urban areas and non-left-behind and left-behind families in the rural areas of China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in urban areas of Zhejiang and rural areas of Henan in China. A total of 1648 caregivers of children aged 1-6 years were interviewed face-to-face by a pre-designed online questionnaire, and their families were grouped into four types: local urban, migrant, non-left-behind, and left-behind. Non-NIP vaccines included Hemophilus influenza b (Hib) vaccine, varicella vaccine, rotavirus vaccine, enterovirus 71 vaccine (EV71) and 13-valent pneumonia vaccine (PCV13). Log-binomial regression models were used to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the difference on immunization coverage of children, and knowledge and satisfaction of caregivers among families. The network models were conducted to explore the interplay of immunization coverage, knowledge, and satisfaction. Logistic regression models with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were used to estimate the associated factors of non-NIP vaccination. RESULTS: The immunization coverage of all non-NIP vaccines and knowledge of all items of local urban families was the highest, followed by migrant, non-left-behind and left-behind families. Compared with local urban children, the PRs (95% CIs) for getting all vaccinated were 0.65 (0.52-0.81), 0.29 (0.22-0.37) and 0.14 (0.09-0.21) among migrant children, non-left-behind children and left-behind children, respectively. The coverage-knowledge-satisfaction network model showed the core node was the satisfaction of vaccination schedule. Non-NIP vaccination was associated with characteristics of both children and caregivers, including age of children (> 2 years-OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.07-2.68 for local urban children; 2.67, 1.39-5.13 for migrant children; 3.09, 1.23-7.76 for non-left-behind children); and below caregivers' characteristics: family role (parents: 0.37, 0.14-0.99 for non-left-behind children), age (≤ 35 years: 7.27, 1.39-37.94 for non-left-behind children), sex (female: 0.49, 0.30-0.81 for local urban children; 0.31, 0.15-0.62 for non-left-behind children), physical health (more than average: 1.58, 1.07-2.35 for local urban children) and non-NIP vaccines knowledge (good: 0.45, 0.30-0.68 for local urban children; 7.54, 2.64-21.50 for left-behind children). CONCLUSIONS: There were immunization disparities in non-NIP vaccines among migrant and left-behind families compared with their local counterparts. Non-NIP vaccination promotion strategies, including education on caregivers, and optimization of the immunization information system, should be delivered particularly among left-behind and migrant families.

Kidney beans (KBs), as a traditional edible legume, are an important food crop of high nutritional and economic value worldwide. KBs contain a full range of amino acids and a high proportion of essential amino acids, and are rich in carbohydrates as well as vitamins and minerals. However, KBs contain a variety of non-nutritional factors that impede the digestion and absorption of nutrients, disrupt normal metabolism and produce allergic reactions, which severely limit the exploitation of KBs and related products. Suppressing or removing the activity of non-nutritional factors through different processing methods can effectively improve the application value of KBs and expand the market prospect of their products. The aim of this review was to systematically summarize the main types of non-nutritional factors in KBs and their mechanisms of action, and to elucidate the effects of different food processing techniques on non-nutritional factors. The databases utilized for the research included Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus. We considered all original indexed studies written in English and published between 2012 and 2023. We also look forward to the future research direction of producing KB products with low non-nutritional factors, which will provide theoretical basis and foundation for the development of safer and healthier KB products.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different polysaccharides on the binding behavior and functional properties of soybean protein isolate (SPI)-quercetin (Que) complex. The binding behavior was assessed using multi-spectral technique with the Stern-Volmer equation, which confirmed the presence of static fluorescence quenching in Que and SPI. The addition of sodium alginate (SA) resulted in a reduction of the binding affinity between SPI and Que, while dextran (DX) exhibited some promoting effect. A slight blue shift was observed in amide I and amide II bands, indicating the presence of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Circular dichroism spectra revealed the ordered structures transformed into a more disordered state when polysaccharides were added, leading to an increase in random coils (SA: 18.5 %, DX: 15.4 %). Docking and dynamic simulations demonstrated that SA displayed greater stability within the hydrophobic compartments of SPI than DX, increased rigidity and stability of the SPI structure in SPI-Que-SA complexes. Electrostatic forces played a significant role between SPI and SA, while van der Waals forces were the main driving forces in SPI-DX complexes. Overall, the introduction of SA led to a looser and stable structure of SPI-Que complexes, resulting in an improvement of their emulsifying, foaming, and antioxidant properties.

What is already known about this topic?: Maintaining a healthy diet and appropriate weight during pregnancy is crucial for both the expectant mother and the fetus. Unhealthy eating behaviors (UEBs) such as eating out frequently are becoming increasingly prevalent across the globe. However, there is a dearth of research investigating the relationship between UEBs and gestational weight gain (GWG) specifically in the context of Chinese women. What is added by this report?: The study revealed that a majority of pregnant women reported experiencing one or more UEBs such as eating fast, eating three meals irregularly, eating away from home, and skipping breakfast. A positive association was also observed between the number of UEBs and elevated odds of experiencing excessive GWG. What are the implications for public health practice?: The uptake of emerging UEBs is prevalent among pregnant women in China. It is recommended that healthy eating behavior become the focal point of gestational weight management in clinical practice. Moreover, preconception care should take into account customized health education and promotion programs.

BACKGROUND: Segmental fusion operations assume paramount significance for individuals afflicted by full layers of annulus tears as they avert the perils of rapid disc degeneration and segmental instability. Structures with high signal intensity in the T2-weighted MRI can predict potential damage to the injured segment. Since local structures are shortly related biomechanically, this may be an effective predictor for annulus tears. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 57 patients afflicted by cervical injuries and subjected to single-segment ACDF has been performed in this study. The surgeon performed intraoperative exploration to assess the integration status of the annulus. The signal intensity of the prevertebral space, nucleus, and injured vertebral bodies were judged in the T2-weighted imaging data. Regression analyses identified independent predictors for annulus tears, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was computed to evaluate the predictive performance of potential independent predictors. RESULTS: The occurrence of nucleus high intensity was significantly higher among individuals with annulus tears, and the nucleus high intensity was deemed an independent predictor for determining the presence of intraoperative visible annulus tears in patients with cervical injuries. AUC for nucleus high intensity was calculated as 0.717, with a corresponding p-value less than 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: In the realm of diagnosing annulus tears in injured cervical patients, nucleus high intensity in the T2-weighted MRI emerges as a promising predictive factor. Notably, this applies specifically to patients devoid of fracture and visible annulus tears in their MRI scans. Such positive outcomes should be regarded as prospective indications for ACDF.

The optimization of trichromatic white light emitting diodes (LEDs) spectrum for application scenes related to the age of lighting users is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the spectral transmissivity of human eyes at different ages, the visual and non-visual responses of human eyes to different wavelengths of light, we have built the blue light hazards (BLH) and circadian action factor (CAF) related to the age of the lighting user. The BLH and CAF are used to evaluate the spectral combinations of high color rendering index (CRI) white LEDs obtained from different radiation flux ratios of red, green, and blue monochrome spectrum. The best spectra of white LEDs for lighting users at different ages in work and leisure scenes are achieved due to the optimization criterion of BLH proposed by us. This research provides a solution for intelligent health lighting design applicable to light users of different ages and application scenes.

Recently, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has shown great potential in advanced manufacturing. However, the rapid melting and re-solidification of the molten pool in LPBF leads to the distortion of parts, especially thin-walled parts. The traditional geometric compensation method, which is used to overcome this problem, is simply based on mapping compensation, with the general effect of distortion reduction. In this study, we used a genetic algorithm (GA) and backpropagation (BP) network to optimize the geometric compensation of Ti6Al4V thin-walled parts fabricated by LPBF. The GA-BP network method can generate free-form thin-walled structures with enhanced geometric freedom for compensation. For the GA-BP network training, an arc thin-walled structure was designed and printed by LBPF and measured via optical scanning measurements. The final distortion of the compensated arc thin-walled part based on GA-BP was reduced by 87.9% compared with PSO-BP and mapping method. The effectiveness of this GA-BP compensation method is further evaluated in an application case using new data points, and the result shows that the final distortion of the oral maxillary stent was reduced by 71%. In summary, the GA-BP-based geometric compensation proposed in this study can better reduce the distortion of thin-walled parts with higher time and cost efficiencies.

A magnetic chitosan/TiO2 composite material (MCT) was developed. MCT was successfully synthesized by a one-pot method using chitosan, TiO2, and Fe3O4. The absorption equilibrium time of MCT was 40 min in absorbing vanadium(v), the optimal adsorption pH was 4, and the maximum adsorption capacity of vanadium(v) was 117.1 mg g-1. The spent MCT was applied to photocatalytic reactions for reutilization. The decolorization rates for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) by new and spent MCT were 86.4% and 94.3%, respectively. The new and spent MCT exhibited absorption bands at 397 and 455 nm, respectively, which showed that the spent MCT was red-shifted to the cyan light region. These results indicated that the forbidden band widths of the new and spent MCT were about 3.12 and 2.72 eV, respectively. The mechanism of the degradation reaction showed that the hydroxyl radicals as oxidants in the spent MCT mediated the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. In addition, the superoxide anion radical formation of hydroxyl radicals was the main reaction, and the hole generation of hydroxyl radicals was the subordinate reaction. The N-de-ethylated intermediates and organic acids were monitored by MS and HPLC.

This paper investigates the impact of land use/cover type changes in the Haideigou open-pit coal mine on the evolution of the landscape patterns and ecological and environmental quality in the mine area, based on medium- and high-resolution remote sensing images in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 using ArcGIS 10.5, Fragstats 4.2, and the Google Earth Engine platform. The results show that: (1) From 2006 to 2021, the area of cropland and waste dumps in the Heidaigou mining area changed significantly, the land use shifted in a single direction, and the overall land use change was unbalanced. (2) Through the analysis of landscape indicators, it was shown that the diversity of the landscape patches in the study area increased, connectivity decreased, and the patches became more fragmented. (3) Based on the changes in the mean value of the RSEI over the past 15 years, the ecological environment quality of the mining area deteriorated first and then improved. The quality of the ecological environment in the mining area was significantly affected by human activities. This study provides an important basis for achieving the sustainability and stability of ecological environmental development in mining areas.

Hematoma is a life-threatening complication of anterior surgery in cervical spondylosis patients. Herein, we report a cervical spondylosis patient complicated with Huntington's disease, who developed unexpected neck hematoma after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgical treatment. During the debridement, we found no noticeable vessel lesions and concluded that the occurrence of postoperative hematoma might be due to the drainage displacement caused by excessive uncontrolled movements of the neck after the operation. The patient recovered well, and further literature review suggests that chorea secondary to Huntington's disease likely increases mechanical stress on the cervical spine, indicating an internal relationship between degenerative cervical spondylosis and Huntington's disease. Cervical spondylotic patients complicated with Huntington's disease can be treated with surgical intervention but need to be immobilized and under close observation.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of a new haplo-paraspinal-muscle-preserving (HMP) laminoplasty technique in the treatment of cervical myelopathy. METHODS: The medical records of 68 patients diagnosed with multisegmental cervical myelopathy were retrospectively reviewed. Of these, 22 patients who underwent HMP laminoplasty were defined as the muscle-preserved group (MP), and 46 patients who underwent traditional open-door laminoplasty were enrolled and defined as the traditional open-door laminoplasty group (LP). Patient demographic data and surgical parameters like clinical and radiological parameters, operation duration, blood loss, and spinal canal expansion distance were compared. RESULTS: Average surgical time and blood loss were significantly reduced in the MP group when compared with the LP group (P < 0.05). Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in neurological function and spinal canal expansion (P > 0.05). However, the visual analog scale score in the MP group was significantly lower compared with the LP group at the 6-month follow-up (P < 0.05), but no differences were found at the 1-year follow-up. The loss of lordosis was more prominent in the LP group when compared with the MP group at 1-year follow-up (P < 0.05). Lower events of persistent axial pain were found in the MP group but with no statistical significance. More hinge side laminae fractures could be found in the MP group, but more hinge side displacements were found in the LP group. CONCLUSIONS: The HMP laminoplasty technique is relatively safe, effective, easier to perform, and better for lordosis maintenance and complication control compared with the traditional open-door technique. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although traditional open-door laminoplasty is an efficient approach in treating multisegmental cervical myelopathy, the complications could significantly affect the clinical outcome. Our new HMP laminoplasty technique has a lower complication rate and a better lordosis maintenance ability; therefore, it could be a better choice in treating multisegmental cervical myelopathy.

This study focused on the non-covalent interaction between soybean protein isolate (SPI) and ß-carotene (BC). The conformational changes of SPI with ß-carotene in varying proportions (BC/SPI: 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%) were investigated by multi-spectroscopy and molecular docking. Results showed that the quenching mode is static quenching and binding affinity increased with temperature. The stoichiometry was 1:1, indicating there was only one binding site in SPI. The binding was based on entropy and primarily driven by hydrophobic interactions and its binding constant was in the order of 104 L⋅mol-1. The addition of the ß-carotene affected the secondary structure of SPI resulting in an increase in α-Helix and a decrease in random coil and ß-turn content, indicating protein aggregated and hydrophobic interactions occurred. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) verified that no new larger molecular weight substance was formed and no covalent interaction existed. Molecular docking corroborated that electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions were both involved in the formation of complexes, where hydrophobic interaction was the dominant one. Moreover, ß-carotene improved 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, foaming capacity, and emulsifying stability of SPI. These findings provide useful information about the interaction mechanism of SPI and ß-carotene, which contributes to the further development and application of SPI products rich in ß-carotene in the food industry.

Objective: Motility compensation increases the risk of adjacent segment diseases (ASDs). Previous studies have demonstrated that patients with ASD have a poor bone mineral density (BMD), and changes in BMD affect the biomechanical environment of bones and tissues, possibly leading to an increase in ASD incidence. However, whether poor BMD increases the risk of ASD by aggravating the motility compensation of the adjacent segment remains unclear. The present study aimed to clarify this relationship in oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) models with different BMDs and additional fixation methods. Methods: Stand-alone (S-A) OLIF and OLIF fixed with bilateral pedicle screws (BPS) were simulated in the L4-L5 segment of our well-validated lumbosacral model. Range of motions (ROMs) and stiffness in the surgical segment and at the cranial and caudal sides' adjacent segments were computed under flexion, extension, and unilateral bending and axial rotation loading conditions. Results: Under most loading conditions, the motility compensation of both cranial and caudal segments adjacent to the OLIF segment steeply aggravated with BMD reduction in S-A and BPS OLIF models. More severe motility compensation of the adjacent segment was observed in BPS models than in S-A models. Correspondingly, the surgical segment's stiffness of S-A models was apparently lower than that of BPS models (S-A models showed higher ROMs and lower stiffness in the surgical segment). Conclusion: Poor BMD aggravates the motility compensation of adjacent segments after both S-A OLIF and OLIF with BPS fixation. This variation may cause a higher risk of ASD in OLIF patients with poor BMD. S-A OLIF cannot provide instant postoperative stability; therefore, the daily motions of patients with S-A OLIF should be restricted before ideal interbody fusion to avoid surgical segment complications.

The conformational changes and functional properties of SPI induced by quercetin was investigated via fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and molecular docking. A decrease in the fluorescence intensity and a blue shift in the maximum wavelength were observed due to the binding process with fluorescent residues. The analysis of Stern-Volmer equation showed that the fluorescence quenching induced by quercetin took the form of static quenching, and the binding stoichiometry between SPI and quercetin was 1:1. The values of ΔH and ΔS were both positive illustrating that hydrophobic interaction was the primary binding force between quercetin and SPI. Results of FTIR and CD indicated that the binding with quercetin changed the secondary structure of SPI, resulting in a partially unfolded and more flexible structure. SDS-PAGE confirmed there was no covalent interaction between the two constituents. Molecular docking demonstrated that there were stable configurations and high matching degrees in both 11S and 7S proteins with quercetin via hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. Meanwhile, modification by quercetin enhanced the foaming and emulsifying capacities of SPI. These findings might provide theory reference for elucidation the mechanism of polyphenols-proteins interaction and development of related food additive products in future.

The control of cargo phase-transfer is of interest for many applications in science and technology. Herein, we report a simple, versatile and robust method to block the phase-transfer of cargo colloids by interfacial self-assembled amphiphilic polymer molecules. After simply increasing the concentration of amphiphilic polymers, the orientation of interfacial polymer molecules changed from flat to upright, forming a thick three-dimensional polymer layer at the oil-water interface. Even under fierce external force, this thick interfacial layer robustly prevented the phase-transfer of cargo colloids, resulting in an ultrahigh encapsulation efficiency (up to 97.1 %) for proteins and peptides. One single injection of high insulin-loaded microcomposites (58.3 wt%) kept the blood glucose level within the normoglycemic state for 10 days in type 1 diabetic rats. The mass of administrated amphiphilic polymers was 1889 times smaller than that of microcomposites prepared with non-amphiphilic ones.

The crosslinking and drying method of microcapsules prepared by complex coacervation has been investigated in order to achieve a better control of the oxidative stability of the final powder product. Methyl oleate was microencapsulated with gelatin and gum arabic as wall materials. For improving the oxidative stability of microcapsules, the crosslinking and drying method was optimized in order to obtain a product with a stable and dense wall layer structure. The wall layer crosslinked by transglutaminase was found to be more thermostable than other food-grade crosslinking agents. Combined uses of different crosslinking agents had been carried out for microcapsules obtained by freeze drying, and the product crosslinked in turn by transglutaminase and tannic acid exhibited the relatively best oxidative stability measured by oxidation induction time. However, a new method of organic solvent replacement drying was found to be more suitable for drying microcapsules, since this method could achieve better oxidative stability than freeze or spray drying even by using transglutaminase or tannic acid alone as the crosslinking agent. The SEM graphs showed that this new drying method could avoid ice crystal formation and reduce the external force during the drying process, thus effectively reducing the occurrence of micro-holes in the wall layer and inhibiting the adhesion between the microcapsules. From the analysis of the secondary structure measurement, this new drying method could convert irregular structures into α-helical structures, hence enhancing the compactness of the wall layer structure. The organic solvent replacement drying method is an economical and environmental method with promising application prospects.

This paper developed a universal detection method by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to detect three typical clenbuterols, CLB, SAL, and RAC, and to investigate the metabolism of ß-agonists in vivo. The parent ions and daughter ions of the three ß-receptor agonist standards and the residues in the muscle, liver, and blood samples of rats were obtained by Total Ions Scan mode. The metabolites produced in different tissues at a specific time were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed, and the corresponding metabolic pathways were inferred. The results showed that the three ß-receptor agonists mainly existed in the form of prototype drugs in rats, with a small amount of clenbuterol methyl compound and albuterol methyl compound. There were significant differences in residual metabolism between different tissues of the same species. In addition, different ß-receptor agonists have different absorption and utilization rates in rats.
