AIM: To assess the implant stability and amount of marginal bone loss in immediate implant placement (IIP) in mandibular molars by using pre-extractive interradicular implant bed preparation vs conventional post-extractive interradicular implant bed preparation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on fourteen patients who had an immediate dental implant at the mandibular molar area by two different techniques. All patients were divided randomly into two equal groups: Group I (control) was treated with conventional post-extractive interradicular implant bed preparation, and group II (test) was treated by pre-extractive interradicular implant bed preparation All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon. All patients were followed up clinically at immediate post-surgery (T0), 7 days (T1), 3 weeks (T2), 90 days (T3), and 3 months after loading (T6) for healing and to evaluate the marginal bone loss radiographically at T0, T3 and T6. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed using the SPSS version (SPSS, IBM Inc., Chicago, IL), and p ≤ 0.05 was considered an indicator of statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 7 female and 7 male patients with a mean age of 32.07 ± 5.87 years. Radiographically, there is no significant statistical difference in comparing between two groups for the marginal bone loss. However, there was a highly significant statistical difference (p < 0.001) in each group between different interval periods (T0, T3, T6) with mean start 5.27 ± 0.53, and 5.19 ± 0.72 at (T0) reaching 7.60 ± 0.89 and 7.09 ± 0.96 at (T3) and slightly decrease of 7.52 ± 0.79 and 7.02 ± 0.79 in (T6) with radiographic evaluation, and it represented clinically in each group with mean 3.57 ± 0.313 and 4.0 ± 0.58 at (T0) increase to 6.55 ± 0.395 and 6.52 ± 0.45 at (T6) for both group respectively. There is no statistically significant difference in soft tissue healing with an average mean of 4.57 ± 0.24 and 3.57 ± 0.509 (p = 0.001) when comparing between both groups respectively. CONCLUSION: Both techniques seem useful for dental implant placement in badly decayed mandibular molars. However, pre-extracted interradicular implant bed preparation for IIP might offer advantages in terms of primary implant stability and bone preservation. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Both techniques are alternative methods for the treatment of badly decayed mandibular molars by immediate dental implant except for minor complications that do not interfere with dental implant placement. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of different cortical bone thickness and jaw bone density at implant sites on intraoperative pain during implant surgery. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-seven patients(263 implant sites) who underwent implant placement surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from August 2021 to August 2022 were selected to investigate the effects of different cortical bone thickness and jaw bone density HU values at implant sites on the anesthetic effect under local infiltration anesthesia with epinephrine in articaine. SPSS 26.0 software package was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The mean cortical bone thickness at the painful sites[(3.90±1.36) mm] was significantly greater than that at the non-painful sites [(2.24±0.66) mm], and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). The differences in cortical bone thickness in the mandibular anterior, premolar, and molar regions were statistically significant in the comparison of pain and non-pain sites. The mean HU value of bone density was (764.46±239.75) for the painful sites and (612.23±235.31) for the non-painful sites, with significant difference(P<0.05). The difference was not significant(P>0.05) when comparing the HU values of painful sites with non-painful sites in the mandibular anterior teeth and anterior molar region, while the difference was significant(P<0.05) when comparing the HU values of painful sites with non-painful sites in the mandibular molar region. CONCLUSIONS: Sites with large cortical bone thickness have a greater effect on blocking infiltrative anesthetic penetration and are more prone to intraoperative pain during implantation. In the mandibular anterior and premolar regions, the HU value of the implant sites had less effect on infiltrative anesthetic penetration, and the effect was greater in the mandibular molar region, and the implant sites with high HU values in the mandibular molar region were more likely to have intraoperative pain. When the cortical bone thickness in the planned implant site is greater than 3.9 mm and the mean bone density in the mandibular molar region is greater than 665 HU. If there is sufficient safe distance for hole operation, it is recommended to apply mandibular nerve block anesthesia combined with articaine infiltration anesthesia to avoid intraoperative pain and bad surgical experience for the patients.

RESUMEN

Zooarchaeologists investigate past interactions between animals, humans, and their environments by analyzing the remains of archaeological fauna. Age-at-death distributions are fundamental to faunal analysis and are often estimated by comparing exposed dentine patterns to standardized tooth wear stages that have been associated with relative age classes. We present Bubona, an international dataset of dental wear patterns and associated broad age classes in archaeological cattle mandibles. Our open-access dataset of 1460 data entries from nine counties is being used to create tooth-type specific reference tables of probable age class attribution for cattle mandibles lacking complete dentition. Bubona is a valuable resource for the innovation of new systems of age estimation for cattle and it is the creators hope that researchers will continue to both help expand the dataset by contributing their own data, as well as utilize the data to refine and innovate age-at-death estimation methods.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular advancement surgery corrects bone bases while establishing patients' functional and aesthetic rehabilitation. However, little is known about the results of this procedure in the structures that make up the stomatognathic system, as the condyles. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the structural and positional changes of mandibular condyles in ortho-surgical patients who underwent mandibular advancement surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective investigation was conducted with cone-beam computed tomography images. Using Dolphin Imaging® software, seven ortho-surgical patients with Angle Class II malocclusion and mandibular deficiency were evaluated. The images assessed were obtained at pre-surgical phase and after, at least, 1 year of the procedure. To study the structural and positional changes of condyles, linear and angular measurements were obtained, and the right and left sides of patients were compared. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed and, in order to verify possible significant differences, normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) were applied, followed by a paired t-test to define significance. RESULTS: For all measures evaluated in this study, no statistically significant differences were found. CONCLUSION: The ortho-surgical procedure performed did not change the structure and position of the condyles of patients who underwent surgical mandibular advancement. Right and left mandibular condyles behaved similarly, suggesting stability and condylar adaptation after surgery.

Background: The stage of tooth formation is one of the most reliable indicators for predicting a patient's developmental age by radiographs. This study compared the accuracy of three distinct dental age estimation methods (Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems) in children aged 3-17 in the northern Iranian population. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined panoramic radiographs of 434 children aged 3-17 from Mazandaran Province, Iran, who had teeth 31-37 present on the left mandible. This study employed the Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems methods to estimate the dental age of the sample and compare it with the chronological age. The data were analyzed using SPSS v16. A paired t-test was used to compare chronological and dental ages. The Pearson correlation was used to correlate the chronological and dental ages. The errors of different methods were compared using the Wilcoxon test. P values < 0.05 were considered significant for all tests except Wilcoxon. For Wilcoxon, a P value < 0.017 was considered significant. Results: The three methods presented differing mean estimated ages. The Demirjian method delivered the highest mean, and all three methods differed significantly when compared in pairs. The results showed that the Demirjian method overestimated chronological age by 0.25 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.09 years (P = 0.28) in boys. The Willems method underestimated chronological age by 0.05 years (P = 0.47) in girls and 0.12 years (P = 0.13) in boys. The Nolla method underestimated chronological age by 0.41 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.40 years (P < 0.001) in boys. The accuracy of each method varied with the patient's age. Conclusion: According to the findings, the Willems method outperformed the Demirjian method, and the Demirjian method exceeded the Nolla method for estimating dental age in Iranian children aged 3-17. Overall, the Demirjian method overestimated the age of the study population, whereas the other two underestimated it.

Objective: To investigate the presence of a distinct stem cell populations different from mesenchymal stem cells in the mandibular periosteum of both human and non-human primates (macaca mulatta), to explore its properties during intramembranous osteogenesis and to establish standard protocols for the isolation, culturing and expanding of mandibular periosteal stem cells (PSC) distinguished from other PSCs in other anatomical regions. Methods: Periosteum was harvested from the bone surface during flap bone removal in patients aged 18-24 years undergoing third molar extraction and from the buccal side of the mandibular premolar region of 6-year-old macaca mulatta respectively, and then subjected to single-cell sequencing using the Illumina platform Novaseq 6000 sequencer. Cross-species single-cell transcriptome sequencing results were compared using homologous gene matching. PSC were isolated from primary tissues using two digestion methods with body temperature and low temperature, and their surface markers (CD200, CD31, CD45 and CD90) were identified by cell flow cytometry. The ability of cell proliferation and three-lineage differentiation of PSC expanded to the third generation in vitro in different species were evaluated. Finally, the similarities and differences in osteogenic properties of PSC and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) were compared. Results: The single-cell sequencing results indicated that 18 clusters of cell populations were identified after homologous gene matching for dimensionality reduction, and manual cellular annotation was conducted for each cluster based on cell marker databases. The comparison of different digestion protocols proved that the low-temperature overnight digestion protocol can stably isolate PSC from the human and m. mulatta mandibular periosteum and the cells exhibited a fibroblast-like morphology. This research confirmed that PSC of human and m. mulatta had similar proliferation capabilities through the cell counting kit-8 assay. Flow cytometry analysis was then used to identify the cells isolated from the periosteum expressed CD200(+), CD31(-), CD45(-), CD90(-). Then, human and m. mulatta PSC were induced into osteogenesis, adipogenesis, and chondrogenesis to demonstrate their corresponding multi-lineage differentiation capabilities. Finally, comparison with BMSC further clarified the oesteogenesis characteristics of PSC. The above experiments proved that the cells isolated from the periosteum were peiosteal cells with characteristics of stem cells evidenced by their cell morphology, proliferation ability, surface markers, and differentiation ability, and that this group of PSC possessed characteristics different from traditional mesenchymal stem cells. Conclusions: In this study, normal mandibular PSC from humans and m. mulatta were stably isolated and identified for the first time, providing a cellular foundation for investigating the mechanism of mandibular intramembranous osteogenesis, exploring ideal non-human primate models and establishing innovative strategies for clinically mandibular injury repair.

A woman in her 30s presented with a 12-month history of reduced mouth opening and swelling on the right side of her mandible. The swelling was non-tender and firm on palpation. The swelling began to increase in size after the extraction of her carious wisdom tooth. Histopathological and serological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of IgG4-related disease, manifested as a mass in the mandible. The patient was prescribed oral corticosteroids at a tapering dosage over 8 weeks. After 3 months, there was an improvement in the patient's mouth opening and a reduction in the size of the swelling. The patient remains in follow-up care. Including IgG4-related disease in the list of potential diagnoses for oral soft tissue masses is crucial, given their positive response to medical treatment, highlighting the significance of an accurate diagnosis to prevent unnecessary surgery, with oral lesions potentially serving as early indicators before multiorgan complications arise.

Background: This study aimed to compare the perceived masticatory ability (PrMA) in completely edentulous patients (EDPs) with thermoplastic conventional complete dentures (CDs) versus single implant-retained mandibular overdentures. Methods: The current study was conducted in the outpatient Prosthodontic Clinic, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. PrMA was evaluated in 45 completely edentulous patients (46% males, mean age 50.4 ± 4.7 years). Each patient received a thermoplastic PMMA complete denture (Polyan IC TM Bredent GmbH & Co.KG, Germany). The PrMA was evaluated at one-month and six-month intervals of denture use. An immediate loading single implant was placed into the mid-symphyseal for each patient, and the denture was adjusted. Subsequently, the PrMA was reevaluated after one month and six months. The data were collected and statistically analyzed using the SPSS@V25 to assess the changes in PrMA. Results: The PrMA demonstrated improvement after six months of thermoplastic conventional denture use. However, this improvement was not statistically significant (p = 0.405). In addition, the PrMA showed a substantial increase following a single implant placement at one and six months (p < 0.001) of the overdenture use compared to the conventional denture. The PrMA insignificantly improved (p = 0.397) after six months of the single implant retained overdenture use. Discussion: The study's findings indicate that using immediate loading single implant-retained mandibular overdentures significantly improved PrMA in completely edentulous patients.

Background: Tooth gemination is a single enlarged or joined tooth with a normal tooth count when the anomalous tooth is counted as one. Mandibular second premolars show an elevated variability of crown morphology. Only nine cases of isolated second premolar macrodontia have been reported in the literature. Case Description: This case report presents the clinical and radiographic findings and conservative treatment of an atypical and rare case of localized bilateral molarization of mandibular second premolars. Conclusion: Dental professionals should acquire deeper knowledge about anomalies and plan treatment carefully to avoid unexpected complications during dental procedures caused by morphological ignorance.

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM) of the jaw can be effectively reduced in volume through decompression, which promotes bone regeneration and restores jaw symmetry. This study quantitatively evaluated changes in mandible volume and symmetry following decompression of mandibular UAM. This study included 17 patients who underwent surgical decompression followed by second-stage curettage for mandibular UAM. Preoperative and postoperative three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images were collected. Bone volume and the area of cortical perforation were measured to assess bone growth during decompression. Mandibular volumetric symmetry was analyzed by calculating the volumetric ratio of the two sides of the mandible. Twelve pairs of landmarks were identified on the surface of the lesion regions, and their coordinates were used to calculate the mean asymmetry index (AI) of the mandible. Paired t-tests and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis, with p < 0.05 considered indicative of statistical significance. The mean duration of decompression was 9.41 ± 3.28 months. The mean bone volume increased by 8.07 ± 2.41%, and cortical perforation recovery was 71.97 ± 14.99%. The volumetric symmetry of the mandible improved significantly (p < 0.05), and a statistically significant decrease in AI was observed (p < 0.05). In conclusion, UAM decompression enhances bone growth and symmetry recovery of the mandible. The present evaluation technique is clinically useful for quantitatively assessing mandibular asymmetry.

RESUMEN

A 61-year-old edentulous patient presented with dental problems. Examination revealed a very narrow alveolar process in the symphysis area of the chin, with moderate vertical resorption. The decision was made for bone augmentation by means of harvesting an autologous bone graft from the alveolar process. This method can be carried out in an outpatient or day surgery unit and is much more cost effective and less invasive than harvesting an autologous bone graft from the hip area.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mandibular growth and/or projection following maxillary incisor proclination, overbite correction, and maxillary dentoalveolar expansion without the use of any class II mechanics, in growing class II division 2 patients treated with clear aligners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Before and after treatment cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) generated lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms of thirty-two patients with skeletal class II division 2, 16 in the treatment group and 16 in the untreated group, were reviewed to evaluate treatment-related changes. Upper incisors were proclined and protruded, as well as upper arch expansion and overbite correction were performed as part of their regular treatment. Cephalometric analysis was performed to evaluate skeletal and dental changes. Unpaired statistical t-tests were performed to determine if significant skeletal class II correction was achieved in the treatment group. RESULTS: In the treatment group, after treatment, the upper incisors became more proclined and protruded, and the inter-molar width increased while the overbite was reduced compared to the control group. An increase in skeletal mandibular growth and forward projection was also observed, thus contributing to an improvement of the sagittal skeletal relationship as evidenced by ANB and Wits values compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: A combination of upper incisor proclination, correction of deep overbite, and maxillary dentoalveolar expansion using clear aligners appears to contribute to an improvement of the skeletal class II relationship in growing patients with class II division 2. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study shows that unlocking the mandible by correcting a deep overbite, proclining upper incisors, and expanding the upper arch in growing class II division 2 patients can improve skeletal class II using clear aligners. PURPOSE: To study the effect of magnetic therapy on the formation of distraction regenerate of the lower jaw in patients with lower micrognathia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 159 patients with inferior micrognathia of congenital and acquired etiology. The patients were divided into 2 groups. The main group consisted of 112 patients who received magnetic therapy: 55 patients with congenital micrognathia and 57 patients with acquired micrognathia. The control group included 47 patients who did not undergo magnetic therapy: 20 patients with congenital micrognathia and 27 patients with acquired micrognathia. Magnetic therapy was performed daily starting from day 1 or 2 after surgery. Ultrasound monitoring began on the 7th day of distraction and was carried out every 3-4 days, which made it possible to assess the dynamics of the formation of the distraction regenerate. RESULTS: Ultrasound examination on the 7th day of distraction revealed that in the main group the number of distraction regenerates of the normotrophic type was 36.5%, hypotrophic type 18%, hypertrophic type 54.5%. In the control group, the corresponding rates were 53%, 31% and 22%. CONCLUSION: Magnetic therapy induces osteogenesis and accelerates the maturation of the distraction regenerate. This makes it possible to accelerate the pace of distraction without reducing the quality of the regenerate.

THE AIM THE STUDY: To analyze the density of the mandible in cancer patients during treatment with zoledronic acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 45 patients with cancer aged 26-81 years (average age 55±12.88 years), of whom 14 patients had bone metastases (n=14) and took 4 mg of zolendronic acid once every 28 days. The patients underwent standard PET-CT examinations in the «whole body¼ mode, and the density of the mandible was examined on CT. Radiation therapy was performed by intracavitary administration of strontium 89 chloride; remote radiation therapy with cisplatin radiomodification. In the presence of bone metastases, patients received complex supportive therapy with zolendronic acid. The effect of zolendronic acid on the density of the mandible in the frontal and lateral sections was studied by multidimensional dispersion analysis. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences (p=0.002) were revealed for density indicators according to CT scans of the mandible in the frontal region against the background of zolendronic acid therapy. We attribute the absence of statistically significant differences for the density of the mandible in the lateral sections (p=0.101 and p=0.082) against the background of zolendronic acid therapy to a measurement bias. We attribute the absence of statistically significant differences in density indices against the background of hormonal, radiation, targeted and chemotherapy to the design of the study. CONCLUSION: Density measurement based on CT examination data can be recommended for use as an additional tool in assessing the effect of zolendronic acid on the density of the mandible. However, the method of measuring the density of the mandible in the lateral sections requires improvement to prevent measurement bias.

PURPOSE: To compare the peri-implant bone loss of mandibular complete-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses (FPSs) supported by three and four implants and to correlate with the size of the horizontal and vertical distal cantilever at prosthesis placement (T1) and after 1 year (T2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 72 external hexagon (EH) type implants were placed in 20 participants. Of these, 24 supported an FPS with three implants (G3I) and 48 with four implants (G4I). The mandibular implants were named 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to their location in the arch, in a clockwise direction. Digital periapical radiographs were taken at times T1 and T2 for analysis and measurement of peri-implant bone loss. The horizontal and vertical distal cantilevers were measured with a digital caliper and correlated with peri-implant bone loss. RESULTS: The survival rate of implants in G3I was 91.66%, and in G4I it was 97.91%. The mean bone loss in G3I was 0.88 ± 0.89 mm, and in G4I it was 0.58 ± 0.78 mm (P = .225). There was no correlation between distal horizontal cantilevers and bone loss in the studied groups, with G3I being -0.25 (P = .197) and G4I -0.22 (P = .129). Larger vertical cantilevers of implants 1 (P = .018), 3 (P =.015), and 4 (P = .045) correlated with greater bone loss in G4I. CONCLUSIONS: The number of implants in an FPS did not influence peri-implant bone loss after 1 year of follow-up. Larger vertical cantilevers influenced greater bone loss in complete-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses supported by four implants.

RESUMEN

Dental fusion is defined as an abnormality in tooth shape caused by developmental tooth disturbances that produce an intimate union of dental tissues. This case report discusses treatment of a mandibular impacted "double" third molar in a 21-year-old patient that could have been related to either gemination or tooth fusion. Radiological examination allowed for careful analysis of the tooth's shape and root development, relation to the inferior alveolar nerve, and 3-dimensional position. After evaluation of therapeutic options and risks, and with the patient's consent, the authors opted to extract the tooth in question. Such favorable conditions as the incomplete development of the roots and the relatively young age of the patient, combined with the use of an antibiotic and antiseptic prophylaxis as well as a standard surgical approach, enabled a successful result to be achieved with no related complications.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing evidence indicates that the thickness of periodontal soft tissues plays an important role in various clinical scenarios, thus pointing to the need of further clinical research in this area. Aim of the present study was to assess gingival thickness at the mandibular incisors by translucency judgement with two different probes and to validate if these methods are comparable and applicable as diagnostic tools. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 participants were included; gingival tissue thickness was measured by judging probe translucency at both central mandibular incisors, mid-facially on the buccal aspect of each tooth using a standard periodontal probe and a set of color-coded probe, each with a different color at the tip, i.e. Colorvue Biotype Probe (CBP). Frequencies and relative frequencies were calculated for probe visibility. Agreement between the standard periodontal probe and the CBP was evaluated via the kappa statistic. RESULTS: When the periodontal probe was visible, the frequency of CBP being visible was very high. Kappa statistic for the agreement between the standard periodontal probe and the CBP was 0.198 (71.5% agreement; p-value < 0.001) for tooth 41 and 0.311 (74.0% agreement; p-value < 0.001) for tooth 31, indicating a positive association of the two methods. CONCLUSIONS: An agreement that reached 74% was estimated between the standard periodontal probe and the color-coded probe at central mandibular incisors.  CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the context of the present study, the two methods of evaluating gingival thickness seem to produce comparable measurements with a substantial agreement. However, in the 1/4 of the cases, the visibility of the color-coded probe could not assist in the categorization of the gingival phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Sex determination from the bones is of great importance for forensic medicine and anthropology. The mandible is highly valued because it is the strongest, largest and most dimorphic bone in the skull. AIM: Our aim in this study is gender estimation with morphometric measurements taken from mandibular lingula, an important structure on the mandible, by using machine learning algorithms and artificial neural networks. METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography images of the mandibular lingula were obtained by retrospective scanning from the Picture Archiving Communication Systems of the Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Inönü University. Images scanned in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format were transferred to RadiAnt DICOM Viewer (Version: 2020.2). The images were converted to 3-D format by using the 3D Volume Rendering console of the program. Eight anthropometric parameters were measured bilaterally from these 3-D images based on the mandibular lingula. RESULTS: The results of the machine learning algorithms analyzed showed that the highest accuracy was 0.88 with Random Forest and Gaussian Naive Bayes algorithm. Accuracy rates of other parameters ranged between 0.78 and 0.88. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of the study, it is thought that mandibular lingula-centered morphometric measurements can be used for gender determination as well as bones such as the pelvis and skull as they were found to be highly accurate. This study also provides information on the anatomical position of the lingula according to gender in Turkish society. The results can be important for oral-dental surgeons, anthropologists, and forensic experts.

PURPOSE: To assess the presence of mandibular canal bifurcation (BMC) and classify these variations by correlating findings with sex, age and facial skeletal pattern, measurements were made, including height, width, and distance from bifurcation to anatomical cortical bones. METHODS: BMC was identified in cone beam CT exams of 301 patients and classified according to its origin, location, direction, configuration and ending. The height and width of the MC before and after the bifurcation; height and width of the BMC; and distance from BMC to alveolar (C1), buccal (C2), lingual (C3) and basal (C4) bone cortices were measured. All data were correlated with sex, age, and facial skeletal pattern (class I, II, III). The significance level was 5%. RESULTS: 67 BMC (22.26%) were identified in 55 patients (18.28%). Bifurcations were more prevalent in females (p = 0.57), aged 18-39 years (p = 0.40), class I (p = 0.77). Single bifurcations, located in the posterior region of the mandible, originating in the MC, with a superior direction and ending in the retromolar foramen were more prevalent (p > 0.05). Mean cortical measurements were higher in male individuals, with significant differences only at C1 (p = 0.03). The mean height and width of BMC were 2.24 (± 0.62) and 1.75 (± 0.45) mm. There was no association between BMC classification and the variables studied (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Approximately 1/5 of the population studied had BMC. There were no associations of BMC presence or characteristics with sex, age, and facial skeletal pattern. The distance from bifurcation to alveolar (superior) cortical bone is greater in male individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This ex-vivo study aimed to assess the influence of tube current (mA) and metal artifact reduction (MAR) on the diagnosis of early external cervical resorption (EECR) in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the presence of an adjacent dental implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three single-rooted teeth were sectioned longitudinally and EECR was induced using a spherical drill and 5% nitric acid in 10 teeth. Each tooth was positioned in the socket of the lower right canine of a dry human mandible and CBCT scans were acquired using 90 kVp, voxel of 0.085 mm, field of view of 5 x 5 cm, and varying tube current (4, 8 or 12 mA), MAR (enabled or disabled) and implant conditions (with a zirconia implant in the socket of the lower right first premolar or without). Five oral radiologists evaluated the presence of EECR in a 5-point scale and the diagnostic values (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve - AUC, sensitivity, and specificity) were compared using multi-way Analysis of Variance (α = 0.05). Kappa test assessed intra-/inter-evaluator agreement. RESULTS: The tube current only influenced the AUC values in the presence of the implant and when MAR disabled; in this case, 8 mA showed lower values (p<0.007). MAR did not influence the diagnostic values (p>0.05). In general, the presence of an implant reduced the AUC values (p<0.0001); sensitivity values with 8 mA and MAR disabled, and specificity values with 4 mA and MAR enabled and 8 mA regardless MAR were also decreased (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Variations in tube current and MAR were unable to improve EECR detection, which was impaired by the presence of an adjacent implant. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Increasing tube current or activating MAR tool does not improve EECR diagnosis, which is hampered by the artifacts generated by dental implants.
