RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of ozone therapy in oral ulcers healing when compared to placebo or active treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The search was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Lilacs databases. Clinical trials involving human participants were included. The Risk Ratio (RR) and the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95%CI (confidence interval) were calculated. The ROBINS-I (risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions) and RoB2 (risk of bias tool for randomized trials) assessment tool was used to detect bias. RESULTS: After the selection process, 12 studies were included. The meta-analysis showed that ozone therapy helps to reduce the size of the traumatic and autoimmune ulcers (RR=-0.44; 95% CI -0.71,-0.17; I2=0%) in comparison to placebo. Regarding pain reduction, ozone was superior to placebo (RR = 1.29, 95% CI -1.6 to -0.95); I2=0%), and equivalent to topical corticosteroid and laser photobiomodulation (RR = 0.26, 95% CI -0.27,0.78, p = 0.34). CONCLUSION: Ozone therapy is an alternative for accelerating healing and reducing pain for both traumatic and autoimmune ulcers. However, the quality of evidence is limited. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral ulcerations are usually painful and impact quality of life requiring different approaches to boost wound healing and reduce symptoms. For this purpose, ozone therapy is a promising strategy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of Phyllanthus emblica extract in alleviating halitosis and reducing the inflammatory response to halitosis-related bacteria. METHODOLOGY: This investigation, using Phyllanthus emblica fruit extract (PE), involved four aspects. First, we evaluated the effect on growth and aggregation of halitosis-related bacteria, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Solobacterium moorei, using a microdilution assay and scanning electron microscopy. Second, volatile sulfur compound (VSC) levels were measured on individuals with halitosis in randomized short-term (26 participants) and double-blind randomized long-term trials (18 participants in each group) after rinsing with PE for 3, 6, and 12 h, and 28 days. Third, we analyzed pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in TR146 cells using quantitative real-time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Lastly, we assessed pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 mRNA expression via the same experimental methods in a three-dimensional oral mucosal epithelial model (3D OMEM). RESULTS: PE extract dose-dependently inhibited the growth of F. nucleatum (50% inhibition concentration [IC50]=0.079%), P. gingivalis (IC50=0.65%), and S. moorei (IC50=0.07%) and effectively prevented bacterial aggregation. Furthermore, VSC contents decreased significantly at 3, 6, and 12 h after rinsing with 5% PE compared with those in the control. Long-term use of mouthwash containing 5% PE for 28 days led to a significant decrease in VSC contents. PE attenuated the F. nucleatum- or P. gingivalis-stimulated mRNA expression and protein release of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in TR146 cells. It also suppressed IL-8 and prostaglandin E2 secretion and TLR2 mRNA expression in F. nucleatum-induced OMEMs. CONCLUSION: Our findings support the use of PE in oral care products to alleviate halitosis and it may reduce inflammation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the DNA methylation profile in genes encoding catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD3) enzymes, which are involved in oxidative stress mechanisms, and in genes encoding pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the oral mucosa of oncopediatric patients treated with methotrexate (MTX®). This was a cross-sectional observational study and the population comprised healthy dental patients (n = 21) and those with hematological malignancies (n = 64) aged between 5 and 19 years. Oral conditions were evaluated using the Oral Assessment Guide and participants were divided into 4 groups: 1- healthy individuals; 2- oncopediatric patients without mucositis; 3- oncopediatric patients with mucositis; 4- oncopediatric patients who had recovered from mucositis. Methylation of DNA from oral mucosal cells was evaluated using the Methylation-Specific PCR technique (MSP). For CAT, the partially methylated profile was the most frequent and for SOD3 and IL6, the hypermethylated profile was the most frequent, with no differences between groups. For TNF-α, the hypomethylated profile was more frequent in the group of patients who had recovered from mucositis. It was concluded that the methylation profiles of CAT, SOD3, and IL6 are common profiles for oral cells of children and adolescents and have no association with oral mucositis or exposure to chemotherapy with MTX®. Hypomethylation of TNF-α is associated with oral mucosal recovery in oncopediatric patients who developed oral mucositis during chemotherapy.

Aun cuando las autoridades del Sector Salud en México no se han declarado respecto al uso medicinal de la marihuana, con el objetivo de conocer el estado actual internacional sobre sus riesgos y usos terapéuticos, investigamos los avances reportados en la actualidad, así como las comunidades que han despenalizado su uso. Se presenta su origen como elemento terapéutico, pueblos involucrados, diversas denominaciones, historicidad, las diversas preparaciones, farmacodinamia, sus efectos nocivos a la salud en general y particularmente en boca, sus posibles usos en odontología tomando en cuenta sus propiedades terapéuticas. ampliamente reseñadas en relación a otros lugares del organismo. Finalmente, la propuesta de investigación en odontología con especial énfasis en aquellas especialidades donde la inflamación y el dolor agudo estén presentes de manera significativa (AU)


Although health authorities in Mexico have not officially declared their stance on the medicinal use of marijuana, our research aims to explore the current international status regarding its risks and therapeutic uses. We have investigated the latest reported advancements and examined communities that have decriminalized its usage. This presentation encompasses its therapeutic origin, involved communities, various designations, historical context, diverse preparations, pharmacodynamics, its adverse effects on overall health and particularly oral health, as well as its potential applications in dentistry, considering its widely documented therapeutic properties in comparison to other areas of the body. Finally, our research proposal in dentistry places special emphasis on specialties where inflammation and acute pain are significantly present (AU)

Objective: This scoping review aimed to map the adverse reactions in the oral mucosa and face caused by the use of natural products. Methodology: This review was performed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, with a protocol registered in the Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/R57D8). The search was carried out systematically using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, LILACS, and LIVIVO databases, as well as gray literature through Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Reports of clinical cases on the adverse effects of natural products on the oral mucosa or perioral region of the face resulted from inappropriate use or self-medication were included. Data from the included studies were described in a narrative form. Results: Seven hundred and six studies were identified, and after removing duplicates and applying the eligibility criteria, 28 studies were included. The year of publication ranged from 1976 to 2022. The studies were conducted in 19 countries. Fifty patients were mentioned in the included studies and 34 were female (68%). The natural products most related to adverse reactions were propolis (n = 17), with manifestations such as perioral eczema, edema, erosions, erythema, allergic contact dermatitis, and garlic (n = 9), with manifestations such as chemical burn, burning sensation, vesicles and blisters, crusts, and ulcerations. Conclusion: Propolis and garlic were the natural products with the most reported adverse effects on the oral mucosa and perioral region.

This study aimed to evaluate all studies which used the micronucleus assay using oral cells in the attempt to understand whether such technique is efficient in evaluating genotoxicity in gas station attendants. Full manuscripts from 16 studies were carefully selected by the authors. Our results demonstrate that continuous exposure to derivatives of petroleum may lead to genotoxic effects since all studies demonstrated positive findings (16 out of 16) and 11 of them had a strong or moderate final rating. In summary, our results reveal that gas station attendants are occupationally exposed to genotoxic agents and that the micronucleus assay in oral mucosa is indeed an effective method to evaluate genotoxicity in this specific case. Such findings are very important for protecting these professionals who are continuously exposed to chemicals for long periods.

AIM: The aim of this review was to evaluate the scientific literature regarding the cytogenetic damage in oral exfoliated cells of adult patients submitted to panoramic X-ray. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An extensive search of the literature was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases for all studies published until April 2021 using combinations of the following keywords: "panoramic X-ray," "DNA damage," "genetic damage", "genotoxicity", "mutagenicity", cytotoxicity", "buccal cells", "oral mucosa", "tongue", "gingiva", "micronucleus assay", according to the PRISMA guidelines. All clinical studies in English language were included in the study. A total of 10 studies were identified. RESULTS: As expected, the results regarding the cytogenetic damage induced by panoramic X-ray are conflicting. Some authors have demonstrated that panoramic X-ray induces mutagenesis in oral cells, whereas others did not. After reviewing the 10 studies, two were classified as strong, four were considered moderate, and four were considered weak, according to the quality assessment components of the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP). Meta-analysis data revealed a negative response related to mutagenicity in oral cells by panoramic X-ray. CONCLUSION: Taken together, this review failed to demonstrate the association between micronucleus frequency and panoramic X-ray.

The oral administration of isoniazid (INH) may lead to discontinuation of tuberculosis treatment due to drug-related hepatotoxicity events, and thus, the transbuccal delivery of this drug was investigated, for the first time, as an alternative administration route. Ex vivo permeability assays were performed in Franz-type diffusion chambers, applying INH alone and in combination with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium taurocholate (ST). After confirming the formation of micelle structures by dynamic light scattering analysis, UV-visible spectroscopy and zeta potential analyses were used to investigate drug-micelle interactions. In zeta potential analyses, no electrostatical interactions were identified for both surfactants in saliva buffer pH 6.8. Spectrophotometric analyses, in turn, indicated chemical interactions between INH and SDS in both pH values (2.0 and 6.8) whereas no interaction between the drug and ST was observed. Despite the interaction between SDS and drug, this surfactant increased the buccal transport rate of INH by approximately 11 times when compared with the control. In contrast, ST did not increase the drug permeability. The INH retention in SDS-treated mucosa was significantly higher when compared with the control and an effect on intercellular lipids was suggested. In vivo studies are needed to confirm the high INH absorption found here. Grapical abstract.

PURPOSE: Beta-adrenergic signaling can influence cancer progression and the use of beta blockers as adjuvant drugs in oncologic patients has been suggested. However, the involvement of beta-adrenergic blockers in tumorigenesis is poorly understood. This study investigated the action of beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol on tumor onset using a preclinical model of chemically induced oral cancer. METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were subjected to daily subcutaneous injection of beta-blocker propranolol (10 mg/kg; SubQ), while another 32 rats received only a PBS injection (sham group). One week after starting propranolol treatment, all rats were submitted to chemical induction of oral carcinogenesis with 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO). After 16 weeks, they were assessed for occurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), in addition to measurement of tumor volume and thickness, and tissue levels of cytokines IL-6, TNF-alpha and IL-10 in the tumor microenvironment. RESULTS: Propranolol treatment reduced the occurrence of OSCC by 31%, 95% CI ( - 127, 216). Beta-adrenergic blocker significantly decreased thickness of OSCC when compared with PBS. Rats treated with propranolol exhibited a lower tumor volume when compared with control rats, but this result did not reach statistical significance. Tumors from propranolol-treated rats exhibited reduced concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α. There was no difference in the IL-10 levels between tumors from propranolol- and sham-treated rats. CONCLUSION: Beta-adrenergic signaling may be one of the mechanisms associated with chemically induced oral carcinogenesis.

Topical anesthetics are widely applied in order to relieve the discomfort and anxiety caused by needle insertion and other painful superficial interventions at the oral cavity. So far, there are no commercially available effective topical anesthetic formulations for that purpose, and the most of developments are related to hydrophilic and low mucoadhesive forms. Therefore, we have prepared different hybrid nanofilms composed of biopolymer matrices (chitosan, pectin, and chitosan-pectin) blended with nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) loading the eutectic mixture of 5% lidocaine-prilocaine (LDC-PLC), in order to fulfill this gap in the market. These dual systems were processed as hybrid nanofilms by the solvent/casting method, and its mucoadhesive, structural and mechanical properties were detailed. The most appropriate hybrid nanofilm combined the advantages of both pectin (PCT) and NLC components. The resultant material presented sustained LDC-PLC release profile for more than 8 h; permeation across porcine buccal mucosa almost twice higher than control and non-cytotoxicity against 3T3 and HACAT cell lines. Then, the in vivo efficacy of PCT/NLC formulation was compared to biopolymer film and commercial drug, exhibiting the longest-lasting anesthetic effect (> 7 h), assessed by tail flick test in mice. These pectin-based hybrid nanofilms open perspectives for clinical trials and applications beyond Dentistry.

BACKGROUND: IgE-mediated food allergy remains a significant and growing worldwide problem. Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) shows an excellent safety profile for food allergy, but the clinical efficacy needs to be improved. This study assessed the effects of the Toll-like receptor 4 agonist outer membrane protein (Omp) 16 from Brucella abortus combined with cow´s milk proteins (CMP) through the sublingual route to modulate cow's milk allergy in an experimental model. METHODS: Mice sensitized with cholera toxin and CMP were orally challenged with the allergen to elicit hypersensitivity reactions. Then, mice were treated with a very low amount of CMP along with Omp16 as a mucosal adjuvant, and finally, animals were re-exposed to CMP. Systemic and mucosal immune parameters were assessed in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: We found that the sublingual administration of Omp16 + CMP induced a buccal Th1 immune response that modulated the intestinal allergic response with the suppression of symptoms, reduction of IgE and IL-5, and up-regulation of IgG2a and IFN-γ. The adoptive transfer of submandibular IFN-γ-producing α4ß7+ CD4+ and CD8+ cells conferred protection against allergic sensitization. The use of Omp16 + CMP promoted enhanced protection compared to CMP alone. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, Omp16 represents a promising mucosal adjuvant that can be used to improve the clinical and immune efficacy of SLIT for food allergy.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate cytotoxic, mutagenic and genotoxic effects on buccal mucosa and peripheral blood cells from marijuana and tobacco smokers. METHODS: For this purpose, a total of 45 volunteers were distributed into four groups: CTRL group (control): individuals who did not smoke marijuana or tobacco (n = 11); Group M: Marijuana smokers (n = 13); Group T: Tobacco smokers (n = 13); Group M + T: Smokers of both marijuana and tobacco (n = 08). RESULTS: Smokers of both marijuana and tobacco led an increase of micronucleated cells on buccal mucosa when compared to control group. The occurrence of karyolysis showed significant changes in this group as well. The comet assay data revealed genetic damage in peripheral blood cells for all groups of smokers. CONCLUSION: In summary, our results showed that marijuana and /or tobacco are able to induce genetic damage and cytotoxicity in oral and peripheral blood cells.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of systemic administration of the immunosuppressant dexamethasone (DM) while inducing hamster buccal pouch DMBA carcinogenesis. Materials and Methods. Two different experiments were performed. In the first experiment, hamsters' right buccal pouches in group A (n = 10) were painted three times per week with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) 0.5%, while pouches of animals in group B (n = 10) were painted three times per week with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) 0.5%, while pouches of animals in group B (. RESULTS: The time of macroscopic neoplasm development was reduced when DM-DMBA coexposition was employed, finding tumors after 10-12 weeks of exposition. In addition, the frequency of histopathological lesions was higher. CONCLUSION: Immunomodulatory action of dexamethasone may reduce the time of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) induction and may increase the incidence of neoplasms developed.

Canine oral mucosal melanomas (OMM) are the most common oral malignancy in dogs and few treatments are available. Thus, new treatment modalities are needed for this disease. Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) toxin has been reengineered to target tumor cells that express urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and metalloproteinases (MMP-2), and has shown antineoplastic effects both, in vitro and in vivo. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a reengineered anthrax toxin on canine OMM. Five dogs bearing OMM without lung metastasis were included in the clinical study. Tumor tissue was analyzed by immunohistochemistry for expression of uPA, uPA receptor, MMP-2, MT1-MMP and TIMP-2. Animals received either three or six intratumoral injections of the reengineered anthrax toxin prior to surgical tumor excision. OMM samples from the five dogs were positive for all antibodies. After intratumoral treatment, all dogs showed stable disease according to the canine Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (cRECIST), and tumors had decreased bleeding. Histopathology has shown necrosis of tumor cells and blood vessel walls after treatment. No significant systemic side effects were noted. In conclusion, the reengineered anthrax toxin exerted inhibitory effects when administered intratumorally, and systemic administration of this toxin is a promising therapy for canine OMM.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Maras powder (a type of smokeless tobacco obtained from Nicotiana rustica Linn and mixed with the ashes of wood, especially from oak, walnut or grapevine) on the microRNA (miRNA) deregulation of oral mucosa, and it compares these effects with those of smoking. METHODOLOGY: Oral mucosal samples were collected from 74 patients, consisting of 16 nonusers, 26 smokers, and 32 Maras powder users. Genes associated with oral cancer were selected and 90 microRNAs targeting these genes were identified. MicroRNA were isolated and purified using the microRNA isolation kit. MicroRNA were expressed using Fluidigm RT-PCR. RESULTS: A positive correlation between the duration of Maras powder use with miR-31 expression levels, and a negative correlation between the Maras powder chewing time and miR-372 expression levels was found. In addition, there is a negative correlation between the amount of Maras powder consumed and expression levels of miR-375, miR-378a, miR-145, and miR-10b; moreover, another negative correlation is observed between the number of cigarettes consumed and the expression levels of miR-23a, miR-23b, miR-203a, miR-200b, and miR-375. However, miR-200b and miR-92a levels were downregulated significantly more in Maras powder users when compared with smokers and nonusers (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results show both chewing Maras powder and smoking have an effect on deregulation of miR-200b and miR-92a expressions. This leads to the belief that assessing the expression of these two miRNAs is a promising noninvasive method of analysis, especially in mutagen exposures. Finally, large-scale and high-throughput studies may help to identify an extensive miRNA expression profile associated with tobacco use and improve the understanding of oral malignancies.

We report on the advance of freeze-dried mucoadhesive orodispersible tablets (ODTs) loaded with prilocaine (PRC) and lidocaine (LDC) hydrochlorides, aiming to promote noninvasive buccal anesthesia. The influences of combining biocompatible polymers (pullulan and HPMC K100 LV) and a blend of surfactants (oleic acid, polysorbate 80 and propylene glycol) acting as chemical enhancers on the permeation of such drugs through the esophageal porcine epithelium and in vitro mucoadhesion were investigated. The ODTs were also characterized in terms of average weight, thickness, pH, drug content, in vitro release, thermal behavior and scanning electronic microscopy. A dissolution test showed fast drug release within one hour. The drug release data for all ODTs fitted first order. No significant influence of the type of mucoadhesive polymer on release was observed, while the drug release from ODTs decreased in the presence of chemical enhancers. For the ODT containing pullulan the drug release mechanism was anomalous transport, whist for all others it was case-II transport. A remarkable synergic effect between pullulan and chemical enhancers on the permeation flux, lag time, and permeability coefficient of both drugs, but mainly for PRC was observed. Pullulan together with permeation enhancers also substantially improved the work of mucoadhesion as compared to HPMC. In contrast, HPMC improved drug retention in the epithelium. The novel drug delivery platform achieved by combining a freeze-drying technique, mucoadhesive biocompatible polymers, and chemical permeation enhancers displayed an effective strategy for the transbuccal delivery of PRC and LDC that can be used to improve needle-free buccal anesthesia.

Films of gellan gum:pectin blends were prepared by solvent casting method. Gellan gum:pectin mass ratios were varied (4:1; 1:1; 1:4) at different concentrations (3% or 4%) and glycerol was used as plasticizer (1 or 2%). The films were thin (18-30 µm), translucent, flexible, and homogeneous. The surface pH was suitable for buccal application. All films reached high mechanical resistance and the mucoadhesive ability of them was evidenced. High ratio of gellan gum improved the mechanical resistance and the mucoadhesion of the films as well as the control of drug release rates. The films did not disintegrate in simulate saliva up to 24 h and curcumin release could be sustained up to 12 h. The set of data evidence that the films designed in this work represent a potential platform for buccal drug delivery.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of genetic lesions in pharmacists and nurses who prepare and/or handle antineoplastic agents and to evaluate whether there are traces of contaminants in the urine of these professionals. METHODS: A total of 59 professionals participated in the study, of which 10 were non-exposed professionals (controls), 25 were pharmacists, and 24 were nurses. KEY FINDINGS: There was a significant increase in genetic damage in lymphocytes and cells of the oral mucosa in both pharmacists and nurses. The levels of cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide were also increased in the urine samples from those individuals. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the growing need for genetic biomonitoring and biomonitoring of trace antineoplastic agents in the urine of health professionals who prepare and/or handle antineoplastic agents.

Introduction: The oral mucositis (OM) represents a frequent inflammatory condition in cancer patients, and poor oral hygiene has been related as a predisposing factor for its onset. Chamomile tea has been studied as an adjunctive therapy in the management of OM due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of chamomile tea associated with a rigorous oral hygiene in the OM prevention. Method: Randomized pilot clinical study, with 35 patients assigned to two groups. The case-group underwent oral hygiene control associated with the use of chamomile tea before starting the first cycle of chemotherapy, while the control group, there were no previous guidelines and prescriptions. Data about sociodemographic characteristics, the type of neoplasm and the chemotherapy scheme proposed were collected. The variables OM, salivary flow and pain associated to the oral cavity were evaluated, and statistical analysis was performed with significance level p <0.05. Results: It was observed that the majority of the patients had a mean age of 50 years, breast (57%) was the most prevalent tumor site and cyclophosphamide (52%), the most frequently used drug In this sample, no statistically significant result was observed in the two groups for OM, salivary flow and pain variables (p> 0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that the use of chamomile tea and the accuracy of oral hygiene were not sufficient to prevent OM.


Introdução: A mucosite oral (MO) representa uma condição inflamatória frequente em pacientes oncológicos e uma higiene oral insatisfatória tem sido relacionada como fator predisponente para o seu surgimento. O chá de camomila vem sendo estudado como terapia adjuvante no manejo da MO em razão das suas propriedades analgésicas e anti-inflamatórias. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do chá de camomila associada a uma rigorosa higiene oral na prevenção de MO. Método: Trata-se de um estudo-piloto clínico randomizado, no qual 35 pacientes foram alocados em dois grupos. O grupo-caso foi submetido ao controle de higiene oral associado ao uso do chá de camomila antes de iniciar o primeiro ciclo de quimioterapia; no grupo-controle, não houve orientações e prescrições prévias. Foram coletados dados referentes às características sociodemográficas, à neoplasia em questão e ao tipo de tratamento quimioterápico proposto. Foram avaliadas as variáveis MO, fluxo salivar e dor associada à cavidade oral, e realizada análise estatística com nível de significância p<0,05. Resultados: Observou-se que a maioria dos pacientes apresentava-se na quinta década de vida, a localização do tumor mais prevalente foi a mama (57%) e a droga mais utilizada por esses pacientes foi a ciclosfamida (52%). Nesta amostra, não foi observado resultado estatisticamente significativo entre os grupos, no que diz respeito às variáveis MO, fluxo salivar e dor (p>0,05). Conclusão: Os dados sugerem que o uso do chá de camomila e o rigor na higiene oral não foram suficientes para a prevenção da MO.


Introducción: La mucositis oral (MO) representa una afección inflamatoria frecuente en pacientes con cáncer, y la mala higiene bucal se ha relacionado como un factor predisponente para su aparición. El té de manzanilla se ha estudiado como una terapia adyuvante en el tratamiento de la OM debido a sus propiedades analgésicas y antiinflamatorias. Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia del té de manzannilla asociado con una hygiene oral rigurosa en la prevención de la MO. Método: Fue un estudio clínico piloto aleatorizado, en el que treinta y cinco pacientes fueron asignados en dos grupos. El grupo de casos se sometió a un control de higiene oral asociado con el uso de té de manzanilla antes de comenzar el primer ciclo de quimioterapia, mientras que en el grupo de control, no había pautas ni recetas previas. Se recopilaron datos sobre las características sociodemográficas, el tipo de neoplasia y el esquema de quimioterapia propuesto. Se evaluaron las variables MO, flujo salival y dolor asociado a la cavidad oral, y se realizó un análisis estadístico con nivel de significancia p<0,05. Resultados: Se observó que la mayoría de los pacientes tenían una edad media de 50 años, el sitio del tumor más prevalente era la mama (57%) y el fármaco utilizado con mayor frecuencia era la ciclofamida (52%). En esta muestra, no se observaron resultados estadísticamente significativos entre los grupos con respecto a las variables MO, flujo salival y dolor (p>0,05). Conclusión: Estos datos sugieren que el uso de té de manzanilla y la precisión de la higiene oral no fueron suficientes para prevenir la MO.
