ABSTRACT

Dental general anaesthesia provides a comfortable treatment modality for children with early childhood caries and children's dental anxiety, but US Food and Drug Administration safety warnings have raised concerns about the neurotoxicity of general anaesthetic drugs. Currently, anaesthetic drugs have been found to impair neurocognitive function in animals, with possible mechanisms including cell damage, cell loss and impaired neuronal network function. The outcomes of clinical studies on the neurocognitive effects of surgical general anaesthesia in children have been inconsistent. However, studies focusing on dental general anaesthesia in children suggest that it does not affect neurocognitive function. In general, a growing number of studies suggest that dental general anaesthesia does not affect neurocognitive development in children. Moreover, dental general anesthesia should be used as normal when other behavioural management is unavailable.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic serous cystic neoplasm (SCN) is a benign cystic neoplasm that is likely to be surgically resected due to preoperative misdiagnosis or tentative diagnosis even using endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). We aimed to analyze EUS findings of SCN associated with misdiagnosis. METHODS: Between January 2012 and September 2023, histologically confirmed pancreatic SCN were included and EUS features were reviewed. RESULTS: Overall, 294 patients with 300 surgically resected SCNs were included. The median age of the patients was 51 years and 75.9% were females. The lesions were predominantly located in the body/neck/tail of the pancreas (63.0%). The overall preoperative diagnostic rate of SCN was 36.3%, with the most common misdiagnosis being intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) (31.3%), while 16.3% remained undefined. The preoperative diagnostic rate of SCN varied across different endosonographic morphologies, with oligocystic, macrocystic, microcystic, and solid patterns yielding rates of 12.8%, 37.9%, 76.5%, and 19.2%, respectively. Notably, the presence of central scar and vascularity improved the diagnostic accuracy and correctly identified 41.4% and 52.3% of the lesions. While mucus or pancreatic duct (PD) communication significantly increased the likelihood of misdiagnosis, particularly as IPMN. Multivariate analysis revealed a morphological pattern, mucin-producing signs, wall thickening, vascularity, and PD communication were independent factors related to preoperative misdiagnosis, with an overall accuracy of 82.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative diagnosis of SCN remains challenging. The microcystic pattern emerged as a reliable feature, while mucin-producing signs, including mural nodules, mucus, and PD communication, pose diagnostic pitfalls despite the presence of typical central scar or vascularity commonly in SCN.

ABSTRACT

Background: Tumor deposits (TD) was a significant risk factor impacting the prognosis of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer (GC), yet it was not currently incorporated into TNM staging systems. The objective of this research was to develop a predictive model for assessing the prognosis of patients with TD-positive GC. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on the data of 4,972 patients treated for GC with D2 radical gastrectomy at Wannan Medical College's Yijishan Hospital between January 2012 and December 2021. The patients were categorized based on the number of TD (L1: 1, L2: 2-3, L3: ≥4) and the anatomical location of TD (Q1: single area, Q2: multiple areas). In a 3:1 ratio, patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups: training or validation. Results: The study included a total of 575 patients who were divided into the training group (n = 432) and validation group (n = 143). Survival analysis showed that the number and anatomical location of TD had a significant impact on the prognosis of patients with TD-positive GC. Univariate analysis of the training group data revealed that tumor size, T-stage, N-stage, histological grade, number and distribution of TD, neural invasion, and postoperative chemotherapy were associated with prognosis. Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified poor histological grade, T4 stage, N3 stage, number of TD, neural invasion, and postoperative chemotherapy as independent prognostic factors for GC patients with TD. A nomogram was developed using these variables, demonstrating well predictive ability for 1, 3, and 5-year overall survival (OS) in the validation set. The DCA curve shows that the constructed model shows a large positive net gain compared to the eighth edition Tumour, Node, Metastasis (TNM) staging system. Conclusion: The prognostic model developed for patients with TD-positive GC has a higher clinical utility compared to the eighth edition of TNM staging.

ABSTRACT

Hypertensive renal damage (HRD) is a major cause of end-stage renal disease. Among the causes of end-stage renal disease, HRD accounts for nearly 34% of the total number of cases. Antihypertensive treatment is primarily drug-based, but therapeutic efficacy is less effective and can have serious side effects. Chinese medicine (CM) has significant advantages in the treatment of HRD. CM is rich in various active ingredients and has the property of targeting multiple targets and channels. Therefore, the regulatory network of CM on disease is complex. A large number of CM have been employed to treat HRD, either as single applications or as part of compound formulations. The key possible mechanisms of CM for HRD include regulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, rescue of endothelial function, regulation of vasoactive substance secretion and obesity-related factors, etc. This review summarized and discussed the recent advance in the basic research mechanisms of CM interventions for HRD and pointed out the challenges and future prospects.

ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disease associated with high androgen and infertility. The gut microbiota plays an important role in metabolic diseases including obesity, hyperglycemia, and fatty liver. Although the gut microbiota has been associated with PCOS, little is known about the gut microbial structure and function in individuals with PCOS from Northeast China. In this study, 17 PCOS individuals and 17 age-matched healthy individuals were recruited for community structure and function analysis of the gut microbiota. The results showed that PCOS individuals have reduced diversity and richness of the gut microbiota compared with healthy individuals. Beta diversity analysis showed that the community structure of the gut microbiota of individuals with PCOS was significantly separated from healthy individuals. At the phylum level, PCOS individuals have reduced Firmicutes and Bacteroidota and increased Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria compared with healthy individuals. At the family and genus levels, the composition of the gut microbiota between PCOS patients and healthy individuals was also significantly different. In addition, PICRUSt2 showed that individuals with PCOS have different microbial functions in the gut compared with healthy individuals. We finally confirmed that Bifidobacterium was enriched in the fecal samples of PCOS patients, while other 11 genera including Bacteroides, UCG_002, Eubacterium__coprostanoligenes_group_unclassified, Dialister, Firmicutes_unclassified, Ruminococcus, Alistipes, Christensenellaceae_R_7_group, Clostridia_UCG_014_unclassified, Roseburia, and Lachnospiraceae_unclassified were depleted compared with healthy individuals. These results indicate that individuals with PCOS have altered community structure and functions of the gut microbiota, which suggests that targeting the gut microbiota might be a potential strategy for PCOS intervention. IMPORTANCE: Gut microbiota plays a critical role in the development of PCOS. There is a complex and close interaction between PCOS and gut microbiota. The relationship between the pathogenesis and pathophysiological processes of PCOS and the structure and function of the gut microbiota needs further investigation.

Accumulating evidence suggests that Necrostatin-1 plays a crucial role in numerous neurological disorders. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the potential functions of Necrostatin-1 in various neurological disorders, offering valuable insights for future research.

ABSTRACT

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging as anthropogenic vectors to form plastisphere, facilitating microbiome colonization and pathogenic dissemination, thus contributing to environmental and health crises across various ecosystems. However, a knowledge gap persists regarding MPs risks and their driving factors in certain unique and vulnerable ecosystems, such as Karst travertine lakes, some of which are renowned World Natural Heritage Sites under ever-increasing tourism pressure. We hypothesized that tourism activities serve as the most important factor of MPs pollution, whereas intrinsic features, including travertine deposition can exacerbate potential environmental risks. Thus, metagenomic approaches were employed to investigate the geographical distribution of the microbiome, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factor genes (VFGs), and their combined environmental risks in Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, two famous tourism destinations in Southwest China. The plastisphere risks were higher in Huanglong, contradicting our hypothesis that Jiuzhaigou would face more crucial antibiotic risks due to its higher tourist activities. Specifically, the levels of Lipopolysaccharide Lewis and fosD increased by sevenfold and 20-fold, respectively, from upstream to downstream in Huanglong, whereas in Jiuzhaigou, no significant accrual was observed. Structural equation modeling results showed that travertine deposition was the primary contributor to MPs risks in alpine karstic lakes. Our findings suggest that tourism has low impact on MPs risks, possibly because of proper management, and that travertine deposition might act as an MPs hotspot, emphasizing the importance of considering the unique aspects of travertine lakes in mitigating MPs pollution and promoting the sustainable development of World Natural Heritage Sites.

BACKGROUND: In Asia, the demand for cosmetic facial treatments has surged due to technological advancements, increased social acceptability, and affordability. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) fillers, known for their biocompatibility and biodegradability, have emerged as a popular choice for facial contouring, yet studies specifically addressing their use in Asian populations are scarce. METHODS: This retrospective study examined 30 Chinese patients who underwent facial contouring with PLLA fillers, focusing on product composition, injection techniques, and safety measures. A comprehensive clinical evaluation was performed, including the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and Global Impression of Change Scale (GICS) for effectiveness and patient satisfaction, respectively. RESULTS: No significant difference in GAIS scores was observed between injectors and blinded evaluators over a 12-month period, indicating consistent effectiveness. Patient satisfaction remained high, with GICS scores reflecting positive outcomes. The safety profile was favorable, with no serious adverse events reported. The study highlighted the importance of anatomical knowledge to avoid complications, particularly in areas prone to blindness. CONCLUSIONS: PLLA fillers offer a safe, effective option for facial contour correction in the Asian population, achieving high patient satisfaction and maintaining results over time. The study underscores the need for tailored approaches in cosmetic procedures for Asians, considering their unique facial structures and aesthetic goals. Further research with larger, multicenter cohorts is recommended to validate these findings and explore long-term effects. ABSTRACT

Oxeiptosis is a novel cell death pathway that was introduced in 2018. As a form of regulated cell death, it operates independently of caspases and is induced by ROS. Distinguished from other cell death pathways such as apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis, oxeiptosis features unique damage causes pivotal genes, and signaling pathways (KEAP1/PGAM5/AIFM1). Emerging studies indicate that oxeiptosis plays a significant role in the progression of various diseases and its regulation could serve as a promising therapeutic target. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying oxeiptosis remain to be fully elucidated. In this mini-review, we systematically summarize the latest developments in oxeiptosis-related diseases while detailing the molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks of oxeiptosis. These insights offer a foundation for a deeper understanding of oxeiptosis.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is the usual modality for diagnosing stroke, but conventional CT angiography reconstructions have limitations. METHODS: A phantom with tubes of known diameters and wall thickness was scanned for wall detectability, wall thickness, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) on conventional and spectral black-blood (SBB) images. The clinical study included 34 stroke patients. Diagnostic certainty and conspicuity of normal/abnormal intracranial vessels using SBB were compared to conventional. Sensitivity/specificity/accuracy of SBB and conventional were compared for plaque detectability. CNR of the wall/lumen and quantitative comparison of remodeling index, plaque burden, and eccentricity were obtained for SBB imaging and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (hrMRI). RESULTS: The phantom study showed improved detectability of tube walls using SBB (108/108, 100% versus conventional 81/108, 75%, p < 0.001). CNRs were 75.9 ± 62.6 (mean ± standard deviation) for wall/lumen and 22.0 ± 17.1 for wall/water using SBB and 26.4 ± 15.3 and 101.6 ± 62.5 using conventional. Clinical study demonstrated (i) improved certainty and conspicuity of the vessels using SBB versus conventional (certainty, median score 3 versus 0; conspicuity, median score 3 versus 1 (p < 0.001)), (ii) improved sensitivity/specificity/accuracy of plaque (≥ 1.0 mm) detectability (0.944/0.981/0.962 versus 0.239/0.743/0.495) (p < 0.001), (iii) higher wall/lumen CNR of SBB of (78.3 ± 50.4/79.3 ± 96.7) versus hrMRI (18.9 ± 8.4/24.1 ± 14.1) (p < 0.001), and (iv) excellent reproducibility of remodeling index, plaque burden, and eccentricity using SBB versus hrMRI (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.85-0.94). CONCLUSIONS: SBB can enhance the detectability of intracranial plaques with an accuracy similar to that of hrMRI. RELEVANCE STATEMENT: This new spectral black-blood technique for the detection and characterization of intracranial vessel atherosclerotic disease could be a time-saving and cost-effective diagnostic step for clinical stroke patients. It may also facilitate prevention strategies for atherosclerosis. KEY POINTS: • Blooming artifacts can blur vessel wall morphology on conventional CT angiography. • Spectral black-blood (SBB) images are generated from material decomposition from spectral CT. • SBB images reduce blooming artifacts and noise and accurately detect small plaques.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) after one-lung ventilation (OLV) significantly impact patient prognosis and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of an optimal inspiratory flow rate on PPCs in thoracic surgery patients. METHODS: One hundred eight elective thoracic surgery patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups in this consort study (control group: n = 53 with a fixed inspiratory expiratory ratio of 1:2; and experimental group [flow rate optimization group]: n = 55). Measurements of Ppeak, Pplat, PETCO2, lung dynamic compliance (Cdyn), respiratory rate, and oxygen concentration were obtained at the following specific time points: immediately after intubation (T0); immediately after starting OLV (T1); 30 min after OLV (T2); and 10 min after 2-lung ventilation (T4). The PaO2:FiO2 ratio was measured using blood gas analysis 30 min after initiating one-lung breathing (T2) and immediately when OLV ended (T3). The lung ultrasound score (LUS) was assessed following anesthesia and resuscitation (T5). The occurrence of atelectasis was documented immediately after the surgery. PPCs occurrences were noted 3 days after surgery. RESULTS: The treatment group had a significantly lower total prevalence of PPCs compared to the control group (3.64% vs. 16.98%; P = 0.022). There were no notable variations in peak airway pressure, airway plateau pressure, dynamic lung compliance, PETCO2, respiratory rate, and oxygen concentration between the two groups during intubation (T0). Dynamic lung compliance and the oxygenation index were significantly increased at T1, T2, and T4 (P < 0.05), whereas the CRP level and number of inflammatory cells decreased dramatically (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Optimizing inspiratory flow rate and utilizing pressure control ventilation -volume guaranteed (PCV-VG) mode can decrease PPCs and enhance lung dynamic compliance in OLV patients.

The white adipose tissue-specific aptamer Adipo8 can specificity bindwith mature adipocytes or tissues and inhibit adipogenesis.In this research, we exploredthe effect of Adipo8 intervention on the transcriptome in the process of adipogenesis using mRNA-level sequencing,analyzed the mechanism ofAdipo8 ininhibiting adipogenesis. The results showed that Adipo8 can inhibit lipid formation and downregulate PPARγ and C/EBPα in differentiated 3 T3-L1 cells. Transcriptome mRNA sequencing of 3 T3-L1 cells after Adipo8 interventionrevealed that Adipo8 might inhibit the biological function of adipogenesis by downregulating Acsl1 and Plin1 to inhibit fatty acid metabolism and PPAR signaling pathways.After that, using Spacer18 to connect the optimized and truncated Adipo8, we constructed a bivalent aptamer Adipo8cBand compared the affinity, biological effects, and biological stability between the aptamers in differentiated and mature 3 T3-L1 cells. At the cellular level,the affinity, biological effects, and serum stability of Adipo8cB were verified to be superior to those of Adipo8in 3 T3-L1 cells.We then investigated the biological properties of Adipo8cB as a lipid-inhibiting drug invivo, using C57BL/6J mice with diet-induced obesity. The body weight, blood sugar, lipid levels, liver function, glucose tolerance, and other related indicators in each group of mice were observed and compared after intervention with the bivalent aptamers Adipo8cB and Adipo8. Both Adipo8cB and Adipo8 effectively prevented weight gain caused by fat accumulation in micewith diet induced obesity, while also reducing blood lipid levels, improving glucose tolerance, and protecting against liver steatosis, moreover, Adipo8cB has a better effect than Adipo8.

ABSTRACT

Multifunctional fibers represent a cornerstone of human civilization, playing a pivotal role in numerous aspects of societal development. Natural biomaterials, in contrast to synthetic alternatives, offer environmental sustainability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Among these biomaterials, natural silk is favored in biomedical applications and smart fiber technology due to its accessibility, superior mechanical properties, diverse functional groups, controllable structure, and exceptional biocompatibility. This review delves into the intricate structure and properties of natural silk fibers and their extensive applications in biomedicine and smart fiber technology. It highlights the critical significance of silk fibers in the development of multifunctional materials, emphasizing their mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. A detailed analysis of the hierarchical structure of silk fibers elucidates how these structural features contribute to their unique properties. The review also encompasses the biomedical applications of silk fibers, including surgical sutures, tissue engineering, and drug delivery systems, along with recent advancements in smart fiber applications such as sensing, optical technologies, and energy storage. The enhancement of functional properties of silk fibers through chemical or physical modifications is discussed, suggesting broader high-end applications. Additionally, the review addresses current challenges and future directions in the application of silk fibers in biomedicine and smart fiber technologies, underscoring silk's potential in driving contemporary technological innovations. The versatility and sustainability of silk fibers position them as pivotal elements in contemporary materials science and technology, fostering the development of next-generation smart materials.

ABSTRACT

This study established an ultra-performance liquid chromatography(UPLC) fingerprint of abandoned stems and leaves of Artemisia selengensis and quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker(QAMS) for five phenolic acid components. Waters Acquity UPLC BEH C_(18) chromatography column(2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 µm) was used. The gradient elution was carried out with the mobile phase composed of 0.1% phosphoric acid water and acetonitrile at a flow rate of 0.3 mL·min~(-1) and a column temperature at 30 ℃. The detection wavelength was 330 nm, and the injection volume was 2 µL. Similarity evaluation and cluster analysis were conducted on the fingerprint data, and 15 common components in 13 batches of abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis were identified. The relative correction factors of ferulic acid, isochlorogenic acid A, isochlorogenic acid B, and isochlorogenic acid C were calculated using chlorogenic acid as the internal reference. The QAMS for determining five components in the abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis was established. At the same time, the content of these five components was determined using the external standard method(ESM), and the results showed that there were no significant differences in their content determined by the QAMS and the ESM. The results indicated that the content of phenolic acid components in the abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis from different varieties and different origins had obvious differences. In addition, the content of phenolic acid components in the abandoned stems and leaves of lignified A. selengensis was significantly higher than that of non-lignified A. selengensis. In summary, QAMS established in this study can be quickly, accurately, and economically used to determine the content of five phenolic acid components in abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis, laying a foundation for the resource development and utilization of abandoned stems and leaves of A. selengensis.

Premenstrual syndrome(PMS) lacks a highly consistent and feasible animal model that aligns with diagnostic and therapeutic standards in both traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and western medicine, resulting in a lack of reliable experimental carriers for studying its pathogenesis and pharmacological effects. This study aims to systematically analyze the biological implications of PMS from the perspective of the "disease-syndrome-symptom" correlation and establish preparation and evaluation methods for an improved animal model of this disease. Firstly, clinical symptom gene sets related to the Qi stagnation syndromes due to liver depression and blood stasis in PMS in both modern medicine and TCM diagnostic standards were collected through GeneCards, DisGeNET, Mala-Cards, and the System of Foundational Diagnostic Association(SoFDA) database, as well as published literature. Based on the interaction information between genes, a "disease-syndrome-symptom" correlation network of PMS was established. Based on data mining results, an improved rat model of PMS was prepared by combining chronic restraint stress with the classical progesterone-withdrawal mo-del to simulate emotional depression caused by external environmental stimuli during the clinical onset process, inducing pathological damage from both physiological and emotional dimensions. The evaluation of the improved model before and after modification included open field experiment scores, organ indices, ovarian pathological changes, serum levels of estradiol(E_2), follicle-stimulating hormone/luteinizing hormone(FSH/LH), 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT), dopamine(DA), norepinephrine(NE), as well as coagulation parameters and hemorheology indexes. By calculating the degree, betweenness, and closeness centrality of nodes in the "disease-syndrome-symptom" correlation network, 163 core genes with topological importance were identified. Further biological function mining results indicated that core genes in PMS mainly participated in the regulation of the "nervous-endocrine-immune" system and pathways related to circulatory disorders. Mapping analysis of clinical phenotype symptom gene sets suggested significant correlations between core genes in PMS and depressive symptoms and pain symptoms caused by blood stasis. Compared with the simple progesterone withdrawal model, rats subjected to combined injections and restraint stress showed more significant abnormalities in open field experiment scores, ovarian tissue pathology, serum neurotransmitter levels of 5-HT and DA, as well as serum hormone levels of E_2 and FSH/LH. The modified modeling conditions exacerbated the pathological changes in blood rheology, coagulation function, and red blood cell morphology in model rats, confirming that the improved rat model could characterize the "nervous-endocrine-immune" system disorder and circulatory system disorders in the occurrence and progression of PMS, consistent with the clinical diagnostic and therapeutic standards of both TCM and western medicine. The establishment of the improved rat model of PMS can provide a reliable experimental carrier for elucidating the pathogenesis of PMS and discovering and evaluating therapeutic drugs. It also provides references for objectively reflecting the clinical characteristics of PMS in TCM and western medicine and precision treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to further guide the diagnosis and treatment programs for clinical facial contouring with injectable fillers by studying the facial contour parameters and proportion preferences consistent with Asian aesthetics. METHODS: A total of 89 subjects (42 males and 47 females aged 20-60 years) who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. The subjects were grouped by age, sex, and external contour attractiveness score, and the external contour aesthetic parameters and proportions of the subjects in different groups were measured and analysed. RESULTS: The upper facial breadth and lower facial breadth decreased with age, with significant differences between the 50-60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.01). The nasomental angle showed a decreasing trend with age, with significant differences between the 40-49-year age group and the 20-29-year and 30-39-year age groups (P < 0.05). Males and females were significantly different in calva height, total head height, lower facial height, and calva height to total head height ratio (P < 0.05). With increasing age, the external contour attractiveness scores of males and females both showed decreasing trends, with significant differences between the 50-60-year age group and other age groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The calva height and the cranioauricular angle have a significant impact on external contour attractiveness. In general, temporal depression, cheek sagging, lateral cheek depression, and an ill-defined mandibular border will occur due to ageing, collagen loss, ligament laxity and sagging, and soft tissue atrophy and sagging, reducing the attractiveness of the external contour. ABSTRACT

Currently, there is evidence to suggest the benefits of drinking fermented tea for people with osteoporosis, and based on this, many studies have been conducted on the dosage, exact ingredients, mechanisms, and industrial applications of fermented tea for protecting against osteoporosis. A summary and analysis of studies on the regulation of bone mass by oolong tea, black tea, and their active ingredients (including 39 known catechin compounds) was conducted. It was found that the regulation of bone mass by fermented tea is backed by evidence from epidemiology, animal experiments, and cell experiments. The main active components of fermented tea are tea polyphenols, tea pigments, and trace amino acids. The specific mechanisms involved include regulating bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell osteogenesis, inhibiting osteoclast activity, promoting calcium and phosphorus absorption, reducing inflammation levels, regulating gut microbiota, regulating endocrine function, and inhibiting oxidative stress. In terms of its application, extraction, precipitation, biosynthesis and membrane separation method are mainly used to separate the active ingredients of anti osteoporosis from fermented tea. In conclusion, fermented tea has sufficient theoretical and practical support for regulating bone mass and preventing osteoporosis, and is suitable for development as a health supplement. At the same time, a large amount of epidemiological evidence is needed to prove the specific dosage of tea consumption.

Purpose: With the development of information technology and various social media, recommendation algorithms have increasingly more influence on users' social media usage. To date, there has been limited research focused on analyzing the impact of recommendation algorithms on social media use and their corresponding role in the development of problematic behaviors. The present study analyzes the impact of recommendation algorithms on college students' information sharing and internalizing, externalizing problem behaviors to address the aforementioned shortcomings. Methods: An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 34,752 college students in China. A latent profile analysis was conducted to explore the various behavioral patterns of Chinese college students' information sharing across the three social media platforms identified for this study. The Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars (BCH) method Regression Mixture Modeling was then used to analyze the differences in internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors among the different subgroups of Chinese college students. Results: The level of information sharing by college students across different social media platforms could be divided into "WeChat Moments low-frequency information sharing", "middle-frequency comprehensive information sharing", "TikTok high-frequency information sharing", and "Sina Weibo high-frequency information sharing". Significant differences were observed regarding internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors among college students in different information-sharing subgroups. Conclusion: This study identified four subgroups with different information-sharing characteristics using latent profile analysis. Among them, college students who are in subgroup of social media information sharing influenced by recommendation algorithms exhibit higher frequency of information sharing and higher level of internalizing and externalizing problematic behaviors. These results expand our understanding of college students' social media usage and problem behaviors from a technological perspective. In future, the negative impacts of recommendation algorithms on college students can be reduced by improving their awareness of these algorithms and optimizing the algorithms themselves.

ABSTRACT

Aphrocallistes vastus lectin (AVL) is a Ca2+ dependent C-type lectin produced by sponges. Previous studies have demonstrated that oncolytic vaccinia virus harboring AVL (oncoVV-AVL) effectively triggers cell death in various tumors. However, the effects of oncoVV-AVL on human ovarian cancer (OV) remain unknown. This study aims to investigate the mechanism-of-action of oncoVV-AVL in human OV cell lines and in tumor-bearing nude mice. We found that oncoVV-AVL could directly induce apoptosis and autophagy in ovarian cancer cells. Additionally, our results showed that oncoVV-AVL increased the serum levels of mouse IFN-γ (mIFN-γ), leading to the activation of M1-polarized macrophages. Conversely, NADPH, a reducing agent by providing reducing equivalents, reduced the production of mIFN-γ, and suppressed M1-polarization of macrophage. Based on these findings, we propose that oncoVV-AVL not only contributes to direct cytolysis, but also enhances host immune response by promoting ROS levels.

BACKGROUND: Definitive chemoradiotherapy is recommended as the primary treatment for cervical esophageal carcinoma (CEC). However, local control rates remain unsatisfactory for some patients. Therefore, in this study, we introduced a new treatment paradigm for individuals with CEC, customizing the choice between subsequent local treatments based on their response to induction chemotherapy and immunotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Induction treatment comprised two to four cycles of chemotherapy combined with programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors. Patients achieving complete response (CR) or near CR after induction treatment underwent definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT), while those not achieving CR or near CR underwent surgical resection. RESULTS: Among the 40 eligible patients, 14 (35.0%) achieved a CR or near CR after induction treatment. Of the ten patients achieving a CR or near CR, one developed an esophageal fistula after dCRT (10.0%). Among the eight non-CR or non-near CR patients receiving chemoradiotherapy, six developed esophageal fistula (75.0%). Among the 26 patients who did not achieve CR or near CR after induction treatment, the 1-year cancer specific survival (CSS) rates were 93.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.815-1%] for the 18 patients in the surgery group, and 71.4% (95% CI 0.447-1%) for the 8 patients in the chemoradiotherapy group (p = 0.027). The overall laryngeal preservation rate was 85.0% (34/40), with a functional laryngeal preservation rate of 77.5% (31/40). CONCLUSION: The approach consisting of combined immunotherapy and chemotherapy successfully identified patients who were responding well to induction treatment and who were sensitive to radiotherapy, for chemoradiotherapy; thus, improving laryngeal preservation rates. In addition, it also identified patients with poor responses to induction treatment and radiotherapy, for timely surgery; hence, reducing radiotherapy complications and enhancing survival.
