ABSTRACT

Serous effusion cytology is a pivotal diagnostic and staging tool in clinical pathology, valued for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Staining techniques such as Giemsa and Papanicolaou are foundational, yet the search for rapid and efficient alternatives continues. Our study assesses the efficacy of an in-house-developed BlueStain, a toluidine blue variant, within the International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS), aiming to optimize diagnostic clarity and resource use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This section provides details on the cohort of 237 patients with serous effusions, the ethical approval process, sample collection, and staining procedures with BlueStain, Papanicolaou, and Giemsa. It also describes the microscopic evaluation criteria, scoring system, and statistical methods used to compare the stains. RESULTS: BlueStain demonstrated notable performance, particularly in identifying malignant cells, presenting a competitive alternative to the Papanicolaou stain, which, despite higher quality indices in other categories, requires more resources and time. The study revealed that BlueStain might offer a valuable balance between quality and efficiency, especially in cases where rapid diagnostic turnaround is essential. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that BlueStain is a viable staining method in the context of serous effusions, capable of providing detailed cytomorphological analysis. While traditional stains hold their place for their established diagnostic clarity, BlueStain offers a rapid and resource-optimized alternative. The absence of definitive diagnostic criteria in the atypical category and the inherent sample heterogeneity underscores the necessity for adaptable staining methods like BlueStain. The study highlights the potential trade-offs between detail and practicality in staining techniques, advocating for further research into innovative methods that do not compromise diagnostic precision for cost and time efficiency.

ABSTRACT

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are high-incidence, non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). The success of immune-targeted therapies in advanced NMSCs led us to anticipate that NMSCs harbored significant populations of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes with potential anti-tumor activity. The main aim of this study was to characterize T cells infiltrating NMSCs. Flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry were used to assess, respectively, the proportions and densities of T cell subpopulations in BCCs (n = 118), SCCs (n = 33), and normal skin (NS, n = 30). CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cell subsets, namely, Th1, Th2, Th17, Th9, and regulatory T cells (Tregs), CD8+ and CD4+ memory T cells, and γδ T cells were compared between NMSCs and NS samples. Remarkably, both BCCs and SCCs featured a significantly higher Th1/Th2 ratio (~four-fold) and an enrichment for Th17 cells. NMSCs also showed a significant enrichment for IFN-γ-producing CD8+T cells, and a depletion of γδ T cells. Using immunohistochemistry, NMSCs featured denser T cell infiltrates (CD4+, CD8+, and Tregs) than NS. Overall, these data favor a Th1-predominant response in BCCs and SCCs, providing support for immune-based treatments in NMSCs. Th17-mediated inflammation may play a role in the progression of NMSCs and thus become a potential therapeutic target in NMSCs.

ABSTRACT

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an increasingly meaningful method for the early detection of various types of cancers, including lung cancer, through non-invasive methods. Traditional cancer detection techniques such as biopsies, imaging, and blood tests, though effective, often involve invasive procedures or are costly, time consuming, and painful. Recent advancements in technology have led to the exploration of VOC detection as a promising non-invasive and comfortable alternative. VOCs are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at room temperature, making them readily detectable in breath, urine, and skin. The present study leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to enhance classification accuracy and efficiency in detecting lung cancer through VOC analysis collected from exhaled breath air. Unlike other studies that primarily focus on identifying specific compounds, this study takes an agnostic approach, maximizing detection efficiency over the identification of specific compounds focusing on the overall compositional profiles and their differences across groups of patients. The results reported hereby uphold the potential of AI-driven techniques in revolutionizing early cancer detection methodologies towards their implementation in a clinical setting.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The Brazilian Classification of Physical Therapy Diagnosis, developed by the Federal Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (COFFITO), has the constitutional objectives of standardizing ethical, scientific and social aspects of the Physical Therapy profession. OBJECTIVE: To describe the work process, rationale and proposal for standardization of a physical therapy diagnosis classification system in Brazil. METHODS: A working group was created to propose a standardized classification for the description and codification of physical therapy diagnoses. Some terminologies common to the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) were used to make the nomenclature of diagnoses compatible with the outcomes inherent in the field of physical therapy. RESULTS: The Brazilian Classification of Physical Therapy Diagnosis project culminated in a physical therapy diagnosis model consisting of terms grouped by organic systems and identifying codes. In addition, an application was developed to allow professionals to use the standardized diagnostic classification in an online system. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic classification system is expected to advance the Physical Therapy profession allowing the identification of structural and/or functional alterations in a simplified and standardised manner. From a physical therapy perspective, this classification may help to consolidate the autonomy of the Brazilian physical therapists by establishing a clearer pathway between the diagnosis and interventions.

ABSTRACT

The role of inflammation in cancer is a topic that has been investigated for many years. As established, inflammation emerges as a defining characteristic of cancer, presenting itself as a compelling target for therapeutic interventions in the realm of oncology. Controlling the tumor microenvironment (TME) has gained paramount significance, modifying not only the effectiveness of immunotherapy but also modulating the outcomes and prognoses of standard chemotherapy and other anticancer treatments. Immunotherapy has surfaced as a central focus within the domain of tumor treatments, using immune checkpoint inhibitors as cancer therapy. Immune checkpoints and their influence on the tumor microenvironment dynamic are presently under investigation, aiming to ascertain their viability as therapeutic interventions across several cancer types. Cancer presents a significant challenge in humans and cats, where female breast cancer ranks as the most prevalent malignancy and feline mammary carcinoma stands as the third most frequent. This review seeks to summarize the data about the immune checkpoints cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4), lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3), programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1), V-domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA), and T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain 3 (TIM-3) respective ongoing investigations as prospective targets for therapy for human breast cancer, while also outlining findings from studies reported on feline mammary carcinoma (FMC), strengthening the rationale for employing FMC as a representative model in the exploration of human breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the toxicity and endocrine disrupting potential of a complex mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the estrogen pathway using hepatocytes of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, the hepatocytes were exposed to various concentrations of the PAH mixture, and multiple endpoints were evaluated to assess their effects on cell viability, gene expression, oxidative stress markers, and efflux activity. The results revealed that the PAH mixture had limited effects on hepatocyte metabolism and cell adhesion, as indicated by the non-significant changes observed in MTT metabolism, neutral red retention, and crystal violet staining. However, significant alterations were observed in the expression of genes related to the estrogen pathway. Specifically, vitellogenin (vtg) exhibited a substantial increase of approximately 120% compared to the control group. Similarly, estrogen receptor 2 (esr2) showed a significant upregulation of approximately 90%. In contrast, no significant differences were observed in the expression of estrogen receptor 1 (esr1) and the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (gper1). Furthermore, the PAH mixture elicited complex responses in oxidative stress markers. While reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) levels remained unchanged, the activity of catalase (Cat) was significantly reduced, whereas superoxide dismutase (Sod) activity, glutathione S-transferase (Gst) activity, and non-protein thiols levels were significantly elevated. In addition, the PAH mixture significantly influenced efflux activity, as evidenced by the increased efflux of rhodamine and calcein, indicating alterations in multixenobiotic resistance (MXR)-associated proteins. Overall, these findings, associated with bioinformatic analysis, highlight the potential of the PAH mixture to modulate the estrogen pathway and induce oxidative stress in O. niloticus hepatocytes. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these effects is crucial for assessing the ecological risks of PAH exposure and developing appropriate strategies to mitigate their adverse impacts on aquatic organisms.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of micropollutants on fish health from Segredo hydroelectric reservoir (HRS) along the Iguaçu River, Southern Brazil, contaminated by urban, industrial, and agricultural activities. This is the first comprehensive study assessment in the river after the severe drought in the 2020s in three fish species from different trophic levels Astyanax spp. (water column depth/omnivorous), Hypostomus commersoni (demersal/herbivorous), and Pimelodus maculatus (demersal/omnivorous). Animals, water, and sediment samples were collected from three distinct sites within the reservoir: Floresta (upstream), Iratim (middle), and Station (downstream). The chemical analysis revealed elevated concentrations of metals (Al, Cu, Fe) and the metalloid As in water, or Cu, Zn, and As in sediment, surpassing Brazilian regulatory limits, while the organic pollutants as DDT, PAHs, PCBs, and PBDEs were found under the Brazilian regulatory limits. The metal bioaccumulation was higher in gills with no significant differences among sites. The species Astyanax spp. and H. commersoni displayed variations in hepatosomatic index (HSI) and P. maculatus in the condition factor index (K) between sites, while adverse effects due to micropollutants bioaccumulation were observed by biochemical, genotoxic, and histopathological biomarkers. The principal component analysis and integrated biomarker response highlighted the upstream site Floresta as particularly inhospitable for biota, with distinctions based on trophic level. Consequently, this multifaceted approach, encompassing both fish biomarkers and chemical analyses, furnishes valuable insights into the potential toxic repercussions of micropollutant exposure. These findings offer crucial data for guiding management and conservation endeavors in the Iguaçu River.

This study investigates the dynamics of a modified Colpitts oscillator, exhibiting complex periodic and chaotic behaviors. Our research explores the dynamics and synchronization of coupled chaotic Colpitts oscillators, crucial for understanding their potential applications and behaviors. The main discovery is the emergence of a phase in which the systems achieve either complete synchronization or desynchronization. This behavior depends on the values of the coupling parameter. The subsequent challenge involves understanding how the coupling parameter influences the emergence of this synchronization phenomenon.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus causes diabetic keratopathy (DK). This and other ocular surface disorders are underdiagnosed and problematic for affected patients as well as recipients of diabetic donor corneas. Thus, it is important to find noninvasive means to facilitate determination of the potentially vision-threatening DK. It has been reported that diabetic corneas uptake significantly less oxygen (O2) than healthy controls. However, an integral assessment of the ocular surface is missing. Methods: Using an optic-fiber O2 micro-sensor (optrode) we demonstrated recently that the healthy ocular surface displays a unique spatiotemporal map of O2 consumption. We hypothesize that diabetes impairs the spatiotemporal profile of O2 uptake at the ocular surface. Results: Using streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice, we found diminished O2 uptake and loss of the unique pattern across the ocular surface. A diabetic cornea consumes significantly less O2 at the bulbar conjunctiva and limbus, but not the central and peripheral cornea, compared to controls. Further, we show that, contrary to the healthy cornea, the diabetic cornea does not increase the O2 consumption at the limbus in the evening as the normal control. Conclusions: Altogether, our measurements reveal a previously unknown impairment in O2 uptake at the diabetic cornea, making it a potential tool to diagnose ocular surface abnormalities and suggesting a new etiology mechanism.

ABSTRACT

Ventral incisional hernias are common indications for elective repair and frequently complicated by recurrence. Surgical meshes, which may be synthetic, bio-synthetic, or biological, decrease recurrence and, resultingly, their use has become standard. While most patients are greatly benefited, mesh represents a permanently implanted foreign body. Mesh may be implanted within the intra-peritoneal, preperitoneal, retrorectus, inlay, or onlay anatomic positions. Meshes may be associated with complications that may be early or late and range from minor to severe. Long-term complications with intra-peritoneal synthetic mesh (IPSM) in apposition to the viscera are particularly at risk for adhesions and potential enteric fistula formation. The overall rate of such complications is difficult to appreciate due to poor long-term follow-up data, although it behooves surgeons to understand these risks as they are the ones who implant these devices. All surgeons need to be aware that meshes are commercial devices that are delivered into their operating room without scientific evidence of efficacy or even safety due to the unique regulatory practices that distinguish medical devices from medications. Thus, surgeons must continue to advocate for more stringent oversight and improved scientific evaluation to serve our patients properly and protect the patient-surgeon relationship as the only rationale long-term strategy to avoid ongoing complications.

Composites of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the shape of braids, in combination with crystals of hydroxyapatite (HAp), were analyzed to perceive the influence of this bioceramic on both the quasi-static and viscoelastic behavior under tensile loading. Analyses involving energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed us to conclude that the production of a homogeneous layer of HAp on the braiding surface and the calcium/phosphate atomic ratio were comparable to those of natural bone. The maximum degradation temperature established by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a modest decrease with the addition of HAp. By adding HAp to PVA braids, an increase in the glass transition temperature (Tg) is noticed, as demonstrated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The PVA/HAp composite braids' peaks were validated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to be in good agreement with common PVA and HAp patterns. PVA/HAp braids, a solution often used in the textile industry, showed superior overall mechanical characteristics in monotonic tensile tests. Creep and relaxation testing showed that adding HAp to the eight and six-braided yarn architectures was beneficial. By exhibiting good mechanical performance and most likely increased biological qualities that accompany conventional care for bone applications in the fracture healing field, particularly multifragmentary ones, these arrangements can be applied as a fibrous fixation system.

Bioaccumulation studies in fish mark the initial phase of assessing the risk of chemical exposure to biota and human populations. The Iguaçu River boasting a diverse endemic ichthyofauna, is grappling with the repercussions of human activities. This study delved into the bioaccumulation of micropollutants, the early-warning effects on Rhamdia quelen and Oreochomis niloticus in the Segredo Reservoir (HRS) and the potential risk of human exposure. Two groups of caged fish in three sites of the reservoir were exposed during the autumn-winter and spring-summer, while a third group (O. niloticus) underwent a twelve-month exposure, and inorganic and organic chemicals analysis in water, sediment, and biota. Additionally, metallothionein expression and genotoxicity were employed as biomarkers. PAHs, PCBs, Al, Cu, Fe, and As in water and DDTs, Cu, Zn, and As in sediment surpassed the thresholds set by Brazilian regulations, where DDT exhibited bioaccumulation in muscle, alongside metals in liver, kidney, gills, and muscle tissues. R. quelen showed metallothionein expression whereas DNA damage and NMA frequencies were elevated in target organs and in brain and erythrocytes of O. niloticus during summer. In this species the DNA damage in liver was remarkable after twelve months. Target Hazard Quotients and Cancer Risk values shedding light on the vulnerability of both children and adults. The reservoir's conditions led to heightened sensitivity to micropollutants for R. quelen species. The data presented herein provides decision-makers with pertinent insights to facilitate effective management and conservation initiatives within the Iguaçu Basin.

ABSTRACT

The direct methods for diagnosis of bovine brucellosis have several limitations, therefore serological tests are the basis for the diagnosis of the disease. However, a meta-analysis estimating the diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and diagnostic specificity (DSp) on the main tests used in bovine brucellosis control programs worldwide has not been performed. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the DSe, DSp and thereby accuracy of serological tests individually used in the diagnosis of bovine brucellosis. The databases CABI, Cochrane Library, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science were used to select articles. The search resulted in 5308 studies, of which 71 were selected for systematic review using quality assessment tools and 65 studies were included in the meta-analysis. For the meta-analysis, 178 assays and 11 different serological tests were considered. To estimate DSe and DSp of the tests, studies were divided according to animal selection for the studies: (1) studies that carried out a random or consecutive selection of participants (noncasecontrol studies) and (2) all studies, including casecontrol studies. Considering only the non-case-control studies to estimate the DSe, the tests that exhibited the best and worst performance were the iELISA test (indirect enzyme immunoassay - bacterial suspension as antigen - BS) (96.5%, 95% CI: 94.1-97.9%) and 2ME (2- mercaptoethanol test) (85.0%, 95% CI: 79.6-89.1%), respectively; while for DSp, the FPA (fluorescence polarization assay) (99, 7%, 95% CI: 99.5-99.8%) and PCFIA tests (protein concentration fluorescence immunoassay) (78.5%, 95% CI: 70.0-85.1%) showed better and worse performance, respectively. Overall, our results showed an overestimation in the DSe and DSp of the eleven serological tests assessed when casecontrol studies were included in the meta-analysis, which is a concern considering its impacts on the time and costs associated with populational diagnosis of the diseases, since several of these tests are routinely used in the control and eradication programs of bovine brucellosis worldwide. Furthermore, the tests that exhibited the best DSe and DSp, iELISA (BS) and FPA, respectively, are relatively easy to perform and interpret and the test which showed the best overall accuracy was FPA.

ABSTRACT

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease caused by a double-stranded DNA virus (ASFV). Despite significant advances made over the last decade, issues such as residual virulence and absence of differentiating infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) capacity remain an obstacle in the development of live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) against ASFV. It is, therefore, necessary to identify novel strategies to improve vaccine safety, by rational mutagenesis of virulence associated genes and generation of DIVA markers. ASFV encodes a HU (histone-like protein from E. coli strain U93) homolog protein, pA104R, which is involved in viral genome assembly and host immune recognition. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that pA104R is highly conserved among ASFV isolates, suggesting that it can be a good target for vaccine design. Thus, we selectively mutated the ß-strand DNA binding region (BDR) of pA104R to attenuate its enzymatic activity, and identified and mutated several B-cell epitopes present in pA104R to generate a negative marker. Residues K64, K66, and R69 in the BDR were identified as relevant for pA104R activity, with double mutation of the first two showing additive attenuation. pA104R-reactive IgM and IgG epitopes were also identified in the bottom of the BDR, with selective mutagenesis drastically reducing antibody recognition and, when combined with mutations in the arm of the BDR, leading to a further reduction of DNA-binding activity. Interestingly, the immunodominant pA104R-reactive IgG epitope was mainly recognized by IgG1 suggesting that pA104R induces a dominant Th2 response. In sum, the rational mutagenesis can reduce pA104R-DNA binding activity and immune reactivity, providing a rationale for the development of an ASFV pA104R-based DIVA vaccine.

ABSTRACT

The dynamics of competing opinions in social network plays an important role in society, with many applications in diverse social contexts such as consensus, election, morality, and so on. Here, we study a model of interacting agents connected in networks in order to analyze their decision stochastic process. We consider a first-neighbor interaction between agents in a one-dimensional network with the shape of ring topology. Moreover, some agents are also connected to a hub, or master node, who has preferential choice or bias. Such connections are quenched. As the main results, we observed a continuous nonequilibrium phase transition to an absorbing state as a function of control parameters. By using the finite-size scaling method we analyzed the static and dynamic critical exponents to show that this model probably cannot match any universality class already known.

Inflammation is a natural protective reaction of the body against endogenous and exogenous damage, such as tissue injuries, trauma, and infections. Thus, when the response is adequate, inflammation becomes a defense mechanism to repair damaged tissue, whereas when the response is inadequate and persistent, the increase in inflammatory cells, cytosines, and chymosins impair tissue regeneration and promote a response harmful to the organism. One example is chronic tissue inflammation, in which a simple lesion can progress to ulcers and even necrosis. In this situation, the anti-inflammatory medications available in therapy are not always effective. For this reason, the search for new treatments, developed from medicinal plants, has increased. In this direction, the plants Agave sisalana (sisal) and Punica granatum (pomegranate) are rich in saponins, which are secondary metabolites known for their therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory effects. Although Brazil is the world's leading sisal producer, approximately 95% of the leaves are discarded after fiber extraction. Similarly, pomegranate peel waste is abundant in Brazil. To address the need for safe and effective anti-inflammatory treatments, this study aimed to create a topical mucoadhesive gel containing a combination of sisal (RS) and pomegranate residue (PR) extracts. In vitro experiments examined isolated and combined extracts, as well as the resulting formulation, focusing on (1) a phytochemical analysis (total saponin content); (2) cytotoxicity (MTT assay); and (3) a pharmacological assessment of anti-inflammatory activity (phagocytosis, macrophage spreading, and membrane stability). The results revealed saponin concentrations in grams per 100 g of dry extract as follows: SR-29.91 ± 0.33, PR-15.83 ± 0.93, association (A)-22.99 ± 0.01, base gel (G1)-0.00 ± 0.00, and association gel (G2)-0.52 ± 0.05. In MTT tests for isolated extracts, cytotoxicity values (µg/mL) were 3757.00 for SR and 2064.91 for PR. Conversely, A and G2 exhibited no cytotoxicity, with increased cell viability over time. All three anti-inflammatory tests confirmed the presence of this activity in SR, PR, and A. Notably, G2 demonstrated an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to dexamethasone. In conclusion, the gel containing SR and PR (i.e., A) holds promise as a novel herbal anti-inflammatory treatment. Its development could yield economic, social, and environmental benefits by utilizing discarded materials in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Dynamics of bidirectionally coupled swarmalators subject to attractive and repulsive couplings is analyzed. The probability of two elements in different layers being connected strongly depends on a defined vision range r_{c} which appears to lead both layers in different patterns while varying its values. Particularly, the interlayer static sync π has been found and its stability is proven. First-order transitions are observed when the repulsive coupling strength σ_{r} is very small for a fixed r_{c} and, moreover, in the absence of the repulsive coupling, they also appear for sufficiently large values of r_{c}. For σ_{r}=0 and for sufficiently small values of r_{c}, both layers achieve a second-order transition in a surprising two steps that are characterized by the drop of the energy of the internal phases while increasing the value of the interlayer attractive coupling σ_{a} and later a smooth jump, up to high energy value where synchronization is achieved. During these transitions, the internal phases present rotating waves with counterclockwise and later clockwise directions until synchronization, as σ_{a} increases. These results are supported by simulations and animations added as supplemental materials.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on microbial diversity in indoor environments of ships, as well as the role of the microbiome and its ecological interconnections. In this study, we investigated the microbiome and virome present on the internal surfaces of a polar ship in different stages (beginning, during, and at the end) of the Brazilian Antarctic expedition in order to evaluate abundance of microorganisms in different periods. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: We used shotgun metagenomic analysis on pooled samples from sampling surfaces in the ship's interior to track the microbial diversity. FINDINGS: Considering the total fraction of the microbiome, the relative abundance of bacteria, eukaryotes, viruses, and archaea was 83.7%, 16.2%, 0.04%, and 0.002%, respectively. Proteobacteria was the most abundant bacterial phyla, followed by Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Concerning the virome, the greatest richness of viral species was identified during the middle of the trip, including ten viral families after de novo assembly: Autographiviridae, Chrysoviridae, Genomoviridae, Herelleviridae, Myoviridae, Partitiviridae, Podoviridae, Potyviridae, Siphoviridae, and Virgaviridae. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: This study contributed to the knowledge of microbial diversity in naval transportation facilities, and variations in the abundance of microorganisms probably occurred due to factors such as the number of passengers and activities on the ship.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the microbiological contamination of the marine area of a metropolitan region, where a marine outfall is used as a sanitary solution for domestic sewage. For human mastadenovirus (HAdV) quantification 134 water samples were concentrated by skimmed milk flocculation method and analyzed with qPCR and PMAxx-qPCR, being the latter to assess the capsid integrity viral. HAdV with intact capsids were detected in 10 % (16/102) of samples classified as suitable for bathing using at least one fecal bacterial indicator. Spatial analysis of the results showed that the drainage channels of the basin that flow into the sea are the main sources of microbiological contamination in the foreshore zone, where intact HAdV reached a concentration of up to 3 log genomic copies/L. HAdV serotypes A12, D, F40 and F41 were characterized. Our results suggest the use of intact HAdV as a complementary parameter to assess the quality of recreational waters.

ABSTRACT

Bovine brucellosis, mainly caused by Brucella abortus, is a worldwide distribution anthropozoonosis that causes great economic losses. In 2001, Brazil launched the National Program for the Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT). Contemporaneously, a great effort to characterize the epidemiology of the disease in Brazilian states was started. In the state of Rondônia, a first epidemiological study was carried out in 2004, revealing a prevalence of 35.2% of infected herds and 6.22% of seropositive females. In 2014, after a successful heifer vaccination program with strain 19 (S19), a second study detected a reduction in the prevalence of infected herds to 12.3% and of seropositive females to 1.9%. The present study aimed to quantify and compare the costs and benefits related to the control of bovine brucellosis in the state through an accounting analysis. Vaccinating heifers and performing serological tests to move animals were computed as private costs. The expenditures of the state official veterinary service for brucellosis control were considered public cost. The considered benefits of lowering prevalence were decreased cow replacement, decreased abortions, decreased perinatal and cow mortality, and increased milk production. Considering private and public costs, the net present value (NPV) was estimated at US$ 18.3 million, the internal rate of return (IRR) was calculated at 23%, and the benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was 1.7. When considering only the private costs, the NPV was US$34.9 million, the IRR was 49%, and the BCR was 3.0, meaning that the bovine producer had a return of 3 for each unit of currency invested. The results showed that the bovine brucellosis control measures implemented in the state of Rondônia, which had as its main strategy the vaccination of heifers with S19, produced highly advantageous economic results. The state should continue with its vaccination program, stimulating the use of the RB51 vaccine in addition to S19, to achieve further reductions in prevalence at low cost.
