ABSTRACT

Twice-a-day (TAD) milking during the whole lactation is practiced in about 55% of New Zealand herds and once-a-day (OAD) milking during the whole lactation in about 10% of herds. The remainder of farmers use a mixture of TAD and OAD. Results from long-term comparisons show that over a full-lactation cows milked OAD, on average, had lower yields of milk (27%), fat (23%), and protein (24%) and higher percentages of fat and protein than cows milked TAD, but cows milked OAD for the entire lactation had better reproductive performance. Herds of cows milked OAD have higher mean 3-wk submission rate, 6-wk in-calf rate, and conception to the first service, and lower not-in-calf rate than the herds of cows milked TAD for the entire lactation. Farmers that have adopted OAD milking have culled cows that are unsuitable for OAD, and used sires selected on a OAD selection index to produce cow replacements that are more suitable for OAD milking. This OAD index includes the same traits that are included in the New Zealand national selection index with different relative economic weights on these traits plus including udder support, front teat placement, milking speed, and body capacity. A pasture-based milk production system based on OAD can be an alternative for many dairy farmers to maintain or increase farm profitability, with the additional benefits of better cow fertility and flexibility of using labor.

ABSTRACT

Swedish Red and White × Holstein (S×H) cows were compared with pure Holstein (HOL) cows for fertility and survival traits in 2 commercial dairy farms in central-southern Córdoba province, Argentina, over 6 years (2008-2013). The following traits were evaluated: first service conception rate (FSCR), overall conception rate (CR), number of services per conception (SC), days open (DO), mortality rate, culling rate, survival to subsequent calvings, and length of productive life (LPL). The data set consisted of 506 lactations from 240 S×H crossbred cows and 1,331 lactations from 576 HOL cows. The FSCR and CR were analyzed using logistic regression, DO and LPL were analyzed using a Cox's proportional hazards regression model, and differences of proportions were calculated for mortality rate, culling rate, and survival to subsequent calvings. The S×H cows were superior to HOL cows in overall lactations for all the fertility traits (+10.5% FSCR, +7.7% CR, -0.5 SC, and 35 fewer DO). During the first lactation, S×H cows were superior to HOL cows for all fertility traits (+12.8% FSCR, +8.0% CR, -0.4 SC, and 34 fewer DO). In the second lactation, S×H cows exhibited lower SC (-0.5) and 21 fewer DO than HOL cows. In the third or greater lactations, S×H cows showed higher FSCR (+11.0%) and CR (+12.2%), lower SC (-0.8), and 44 fewer DO than pure HOL cows. In addition, S×H cows had a lower mortality rate (-4.7%) and a lower culling rate (-13.7%) than HOL cows. Due to the higher fertility and lower mortality and culling rates, the S×H cows had higher survival to the second (+9.2%), third (+16.9%), and fourth (+18.7%) calvings than HOL cows. Because of these results, S×H cows had longer LPL (+10.3 mo) than HOL cows. These results indicate that S×H cows had higher fertility and survival than HOL cows on commercial dairy farms in Argentina.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic and phenotypic correlations and heritabilities for milk production and fertility traits in spring-calved once-daily (OAD) milking cows for the whole season in New Zealand and compare those estimates with twice-daily (TAD) milking cows. Data used in the study consisted of 69,252 first parity cows from the calving seasons 2015-2016 to 2017-2018 in 113 OAD and 531 TAD milking herds. Heritability estimates for production and fertility traits were obtained through single-trait animal models, and estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations were obtained through bivariate animal models. Heritability estimates of production traits varied from 0.26 to 0.61 in OAD and from 0.13 to 0.63 in TAD. Heritability estimates for fertility traits were low in both OAD and TAD milking cow populations, and estimates were consistent (OAD: 0.01 to 0.10 and TAD: 0.01 to 0.08) across milking regimens. Estimates of phenotypic and genetic correlations among production traits were consistent across populations. In both populations, phenotypic correlations between milk production and fertility traits were close to zero, and most of the genetic correlations were antagonistic. In OAD milking cows, genetic correlations of milk and lactose yields with the start of mating to conception, 6-wk in-calf, not-in-calf, and 6-wk calving rate were close to zero. Interval from first service to conception was negatively genetically correlated with milk and lactose yields in OAD milking cows. Protein percentage was positively genetically correlated with 3-wk and 6-wk submission, 3-wk in-calf, 6-wk in-calf, first service to conception, 3-wk calving, and 6-wk calving rate in the TAD milking cow population, but these correlations were low in the OAD milking cow population. Further studies are needed to understand the relationship of protein percentage and fertility traits in the OAD milking system. The phenotypic correlations between fertility traits were similar in OAD and TAD milking populations. Genetic correlations between fertility traits were strong (≥0.70) in cows milked TAD, but genetic correlations varied from weak to strong in cows milked OAD. Further research is required to evaluate the interaction between genotype by milking regimen for fertility traits in terms of sire selection in the OAD milking cow population.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss effects for milk production and fertility traits of Holstein Friesian (F), Jersey (J), and crossbred Holstein Friesian and Jersey (F × J) cows milked once daily (OAD) or twice daily (TAD) in New Zealand. Data on 278,776 lactations from 30,217 OAD and 170,680 TAD milking cows across 644 spring-calving herds were available. Genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss estimates were obtained from univariate animal models. Heritability and repeatability estimates for milk production, milk composition, and fertility traits were consistent across the milking frequencies. Heritability estimates for yields of milk, fat, protein, and lactose varied between 0.21 and 0.29 in OAD and TAD. Heritability estimates for fertility traits ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 in both populations, and estimates were slightly greater in TAD than OAD milking cows. In both milking populations, individual breed effects for yields were in favor of F cows; however, maternal breed effects for yields were in favor of J dams. Jersey cows were more fertile than the F cows in both milking populations, but maternal breed effects for fertility traits were in favor of F dams. Individual heterosis effects were favorable for all traits and were consistent across milking regimens. Crossbred F × J cows had significantly shorter intervals from start of mating to first service and from start of mating to conception, and a higher proportion of 3-wk submission, 3-wk in calf, and 3-wk calving relative to the average of purebred F and J cows. Recombination loss effects were not always unfavorable for production and fertility traits, but most estimates were small with larger standard errors. Favorable maternal heterosis effects were associated with production traits in both milking systems, but maternal heterosis effects were less likely to influence reproductive performance.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance of New Zealand dairy cows with different milking regimens. A total of 2,562 herds calving in 2017 met the criteria for inclusion in this study. The herds were classified into 5 different milking regimens: 260 herds with cows milked once daily (OAD) during the entire lactation, 1,206 herds with cows milked twice daily (TAD) during the entire lactation, 94 herds that were switched to OAD milking from TAD milking during the mating period (OAD-M), 700 herds that were switched to OAD milking from TAD milking after peak lactation (OAD-P), and 302 herds that switched to OAD milking from TAD milking at end of the lactation (OAD-E). Time from the start of mating to first service (SMFS), start of mating to conception (SMCO) and first service to conception (FSCO) were analyzed using survival analysis. Time from SMFS, SMCO and FSCO was significantly shorter in cows milked OAD compared with cows milked TAD. Also, cows milked OAD had fewer services per conception and higher mean 3-wk submission (SR21), in calf by 3 wk (PR21), in calf by 6 wk (PR42), conception to the first service (PRFS), 3-wk calving (CR21) and 6-wk calving (CR42), and lower not in calf (NIC) than herds with TAD, OAD-M, OAD-P, OAD-E milking cows. Fertility performance differed with parity; first-parity cows had lower SR21, 6-wk submission (SR42), PR21, PR42, PRFS, CR21, and CR42 values, and higher NIC values than second-parity cows. Third parity cows had the highest values for SR42, PR21, PR42, PRFS, CR21, and CR42, and lowest value for NIC compared with cows of other parities. Significant but minor interactions between milking regimen and parity existed for SMFS, SMCO, FSCO, SR21, SR42, PR21, PR42, PRFS, NIC, and CR21.

ABSTRACT

Keeping replacement heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows mated by artificial insemination enhances rates of genetic gain. Previous research has shown that heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows were lighter at birth and grew at a slower rate to first calving compared with heifers born to multiparous dams. Furthermore, heifers that were heavier before first calving produced more milk than did lighter heifers. This study aimed to determine whether there were body weight, milk production, or reproductive disadvantages for heifers born from primiparous compared with multiparous dams. Data comprised body weight records from 189,936 New Zealand dairy heifers. Dams were allocated to 4 groups according to their age: 2 yr old (n = 13,717), 3 yr old (n = 39,258), 4 to 8 yr old (n = 120,859), and 9 yr or older (n = 16,102). Heifers that were the progeny of 2-yr-old dams were lighter from 3 to 21 mo of age than heifers that were the progeny of 3-yr-old and 4- to 8-yr-old dams. The progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams produced similar milk solids yields (± standard error of the mean) during their first lactation (304.9 ± 1.6 and 304.1 ± 1.5 kg, respectively), but more than that of 4- to 8-yr-old dams (302.4 ± 1.5). Furthermore, the progeny of 2-yr-old dams had similar stayabilities to first, second, and third calving to that of the progeny of 4- to 8-yr-old and ≥9-yr-old dams. Reproductive performance, as measured by calving and recalving rates was similar in first-calving heifers of all age-of-dam classes. Additionally, second and third calving rates were similar for the progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams. Interestingly, the progeny of dams ≥9 yr old had the lowest milk solids production in first (297.8 ± 1.6 kg), second (341.6 ± 1.8 kg), and third lactations (393.2 ± 2.4 kg). Based on the results of this study, keeping replacements from dams aged 9 yr and over could not be recommended. Furthermore, heifers born to 2-yr-old dams were lighter but produced more milk than heifers from older dams, in addition to having superior genetic merit.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that toltrazuril administered at 4 weeks post-turnout reduces the infection intensity of Theileria orientalis Ikeda type in dairy calves and so prevents serious clinical disease in these animals at 2-3 months of age. Two groups of 40 dairy calves on two separate dairy farms in the Waikato were followed for 16 weeks post-turnout onto pasture. On each farm, 20 calves were randomly selected and orally treated with toltrazuril (15 mg/kg) at 4 weeks post-turnout, whilst the remaining 20 calves were left untreated. All 40 calves were blood sampled and weighed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16 weeks post-turnout i.e. 6 samplings per calf. A random subset of 10 calves from each treatment group on each farm were faecal sampled at each visit. The blood samples were used to estimate the T. orientalis Ikeda type infection intensity and haematocrit for each calf and the faecal samples were used to estimate the number of coccidia oocysts per gram of faeces. Three linear mixed effects models, to evaluate the effect of toltrazuril treatment on infection intensity, haematocrit (HCT) and weight respectively were fitted to the data. No calves on either farm developed clinical theileriosis or coccidiosis and the three mixed effects linear models, controlling for the effect of farm and days from turnout, showed that there was no effect of treatment on infection intensity (p = 0.81), on HCT (p = 0.99) and on weight gain (p = 0.79). In conclusion, this study showed no evidence supporting the use of toltrazuril to control T. orientalis Ikeda type infection levels and prevent disease.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To examine the relationship between liveweight (LWT) at 12 months as a proportion of LWT at 21 months of age (LWT(12/21)%) and first lactation and cumulative 3-year milk production in dairy heifers in New Zealand. Methods: Liveweight and milk production records were obtained for dairy heifers born from June to December (spring-calving season) between 2006-2007 and 2013-2014 dairy seasons; production records included first lactation (n = 140,113) and cumulative 3-year (n = 67,833) milksolids and energy-corrected milk (ECM) yields. Heifers were classified into five breed groups; Holstein-Friesian, Holstein-Friesian crossbred, Jersey, Jersey crossbred and Holstein-Friesian-Jersey crossbred. Within each breed group heifers were categorised into quintiles based on 21-month LWT. The LWT(12/21)% was calculated for each animal. Relationships between LWT(12/21)% and milk production within each breed group and LWT category were estimated using linear mixed effects models including the linear and quadratic effects of LWT(12/21)%. Results: The relationship between LWT(12/21)% and milk production was predominantly curvilinear, with lower milk production at lesser LWT(12/21)% compared with greater LWT(12/21)%. For all breed groups and most LWT categories, heifers that were 55 or 65% LWT(12/21)% produced greater ECM and milksolids yields compared with heifers that were 45% LWT(12/21)%. Holstein-Friesian, Holstein-Friesian crossbred and Holstein-Friesian-Jersey crossbred heifers that were 65% LWT(12/21)% produced greater cumulative 3-year ECM and milksolids yields compared with heifers of the same breed group that were 45% LWT(12/21)% Conclusions and clinical relevance: Heifers that were a greater proportion of their 21-month LWT at 12 months of age produced more first lactation and cumulative 3-year milk yields than heifers that were a lesser proportion of their 21-month LWT at 12 months of age. These results indicate that increased growth in early life of New Zealand dairy heifers is beneficial to future milk production.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationships between body weight (BW) and stayability, and BW and calving pattern, of 189,936 New Zealand dairy heifers. Heifers were classified into 5 breed groups: Holstein-Friesian (F), Holstein-Friesian crossbred (FX), Jersey (J), Jersey crossbred (JX), and Holstein-Friesian × Jersey crossbred (FJ). Body weight was predicted using Legendre polynomials at 6, 12, and 15 mo of age, and we analyzed their relationships with stayability, calving rate, and re-calving rate over the first 3 calvings. Approximately 92% of heifers calved for the first time at age 2 yr, 76% a second time at 3 yr, and 61% a third time at 4 yr. Heifers that were heavier were more likely to remain in the herd for first, second, and third calving compared with heifers that were lighter. Furthermore, we found positive curvilinear relationships between pre-breeding BW and reproductive performance of dairy heifers. Heifers that were heavier at 6, 12, and 15 mo were more likely to calve early for first calving compared with heifers that were lighter, regardless of breed group. In addition, we found a large range in BW where the probability of calving or re-calving early was high. For example, FJ heifers that were between 255 and 396 kg at 15 mo of age had 21-d calving and re-calving rates above 75 and 70%, respectively. For second and third lactations, however, heifer pre-breeding BW showed only small effects on the 21-d calving and re-calving rates. For heifers that were at the heaviest end of the BW range in the current study, slight declines in stayability and reproductive performance occurred, compared with heifers in the mid-range of BW. Consequently, for heifers that were above average in BW, the benefit of increasing BW before first breeding would be small and might even result in slight declines in stayability and reproductive performance. For heifers that were below average in BW, considerable beneficial effects on stayability and reproductive performance are predicted as a result of improving rearing practices to produce heavier heifers throughout the pre-breeding rearing phase.

OBJECTIVE: An experiment was designed to determine if behaviour traits expressed by twinand triplet-bearing lambs and their dams at 3 to 18 hours of age (after the immediate ewelamb bonding had occurred) were associated with lamb survival to weaning. METHODS: The behaviour of twin and triplet lambs and their dams was assessed in the paddock at 3 to 18 hours after birth. Observations were made of the number of high- and low-pitched bleats, time to stand, make contact with dam, suck from dam and follow dam were recorded for each lamb. The maternal behaviour score of each dam was assessed. A random sub-sample of lambs were assessed during a maternal-recognition test at 12 or 24 hours of age. Traits included time spent standing, sitting, walking, time taken to reach the ewes and time spent with the ewes as well as the number of high- and low-pitched bleats emitted by the lamb. RESULTS: In the paddock, for each additional second required for twin-born lambs to follow their dam, lambs were 1.004 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.000 to 1.008) times more likely to survive to weaning (p<0.05). The opposite relationship, however, was seen in triplet lambs. For each additional second required for triplet-born lambs to follow their dam, lambs were 0.996 (95% CI 0.993 to 0.999) times as likely to survive to weaning (p<0.05). During the maternal recognition test, twin-born lambs were 0.989 (95% CI 0.979 to 1.000) times as likely to survive to weaning for every additional second they took to reach the contact zone (p<0.05). Similarly, triplet-born lambs were 0.994 (95% CI 0.989 to 0.999) as likely to survive for every additional second they took to reach their dam (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: All ewe behaviours and the majority of lamb paddock and test behaviours were not associated with the survival of twin- or triplet-born lambs and, therefore, are of little use as indicators of lamb survival to weaning.

ABSTRACT

There is an epidemic in New Zealand of infectious bovine anaemia associated with Theileria orientalis Ikeda type, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite. To establish whether T. orientalis Ikeda type infection adversely affects fertility of bulls used for natural mating, a randomised controlled experimental study was conducted. Ten of 17 2-year-old Friesian bulls that had not been previously infected with T. orientalis were infected with T. orientalis Ikeda type and then evaluations occurred during a 20-week period. There were semen and libido evaluations every 2 weeks, starting 4 weeks before the date of infection. In addition, there were blood collections, for haematocrit and infection intensity evaluations, rectal temperatures recorded, and bulls weighed three times weekly for 13 weeks after infection and then once weekly until completion of the study. Physical activity meters were also attached from Days 9-60 and 65-124 post-infection. The ten bulls were successfully infected with T. orientalis Ikeda type and this resulted in a decrease in HCT to about 0.25 by 70 days post-infection. There were no effects of infection on semen quality; however, during the acute phase of infection, when the infection intensity was rapidly increasing, the infected bulls took a longer time period for repeated mounting of females, and were less dominant in the herd social heiracrchy. In conclusion, although the transitory effects on libido could reduce conception rates, the overall effects of T. orientalis Ikeda type infection on bull fertility will probably be little.

Greater rates of genetic gain can be achieved by selecting animals born to younger parents. However, little is known about the lifetime performance of dual purpose ewes (Ovis aries) that are born to primiparous ewe lambs (8 to 9 months old at breeding). This experiment investigated the effect of being born from either a ewe lamb or mixed age dam as either a single or twin on the lifetime performance of ewe progeny. Lifetime performance was measured in terms of the life time live weights of the ewes, the weight and number of lambs born and weaned, the efficiency of production (kilograms of lamb weaned / predicted pasture intake (kgDM) of the ewes), and ewe survival. The study followed the lifetime production of 17 single and 41 twin female lambs born to mature ewes (M1 and M2, respectively), and 28 single and 29 twin lambs born to ewe lambs (L1 and L2, respectively). Over their lifetime L2 ewes were lighter (P<0.05) but had similar body condition scores to the other three ewe groups. There was no difference in average progeny weaning weight or total progeny litter weaning weights between groups. The M1 ewes had the greatest longevity (P<0.05) of the four groups. Even though L2 ewes were lighter than the other three groups, this was insufficient to increase their lifetime efficiency of production (kg lamb weaned/predicted pasture consumption), relative to the other groups. These results suggest farmers could select replacements born to ewe lambs without sacrificing animal production.

This study investigated the relationships between body weight (BW) and milk production of 140,113 New Zealand dairy heifers. Heifers were classified into 5 breed groups: Holstein-Friesian, Holstein-Friesian crossbred, Jersey, Jersey crossbred, and Holstein-Friesian-Jersey crossbred. Body weights were assessed at intervals of 3 mo from 3 to 21 mo of age and their relationships with first-lactation and accumulated milk production over the first 3 lactations (3-parity) were analyzed. We found positive curvilinear relationships between BW and milk production. The response to an increase in BW was greater for lighter heifers compared with heavier heifers, indicating possible benefits of preferentially feeding lighter heifers to attain heavier BW. Within the age range and BW range studied, an increase in BW was always associated with an increase in first-lactation energy-corrected milk (ECM) and milk solids (milk fat plus milk protein) yield for breed groups other than Holstein-Friesian. For Holstein-Friesian heifers, there was a positive relationship between BW and ECM and milk solids yields for all ages except for 3 mo of age, when no relationship existed. These results show the potential to increase first-lactation milk production of New Zealand dairy heifers by increasing heifer BW. Likewise, for 3-parity accumulated yields, the BW at which maximum ECM and milk solids yields occurred were at the heavier end of the BW range studied. The costs of rearing a heifer are incurred regardless of how long she remains in the herd. Potential bias exists from considering only cows that survived to lactate each year if particular cows had better survival than others. Therefore, the data in the current study for 3-parity production includes all heifers that were old enough to have completed 3 lactations, regardless of whether they did or not. Including the heifers that did not complete all 3 lactations describes the effect that BW of replacement heifers has on accumulated milk yields without discriminating whether the increased milk yield came from greater survival or from greater production per surviving cow. Further research on the relationships between BW and survival of heifers is required to confirm whether the heavier heifers survived longer than the lighter heifers, but could explain why the relationship between BW and 3-parity milk yields was more curvilinear than the relationship between BW and first-lactation milk production. Holstein-Friesian heifers that were 450 kg in BW at 21 mo of age were estimated to produce 168 and 509 kg more ECM than 425-kg Holstein-Friesian heifers in first-lactation and 3-parity accumulated yields, respectively. A further increase in BW at 21 mo of age, from 450 to 475 kg, was estimated to result in 157 and 409 kg more ECM in first-lactation and 3-parity accumulated yields, respectively. Consequently, for heifers that were average and below average in BW, considerable milk production benefits would occur over the first 3 lactations by improving rearing practices to result in heavier heifers throughout the precalving phase.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The principle aim of this study was to examine the association between infection with Theileria orientalis Ikeda type and growth rates of suckled beef calves on four beef farms. In addition, associations between calf sex, sampling time, and individual farm and T. orientalis Ikeda type infection intensity and haematocrit (HCT) were investigated. METHODS: The study was a prospective longitudinal study in which 240 calves from four purposively selected beef farms in the North Island of New Zealand were blood sampled and weighed in late spring, mid-summer and early autumn. Two farms were from high-risk (A and B) and two from low-risk (C and D) tick areas. Blood samples were analysed to determine HCT, and the number of T. orientalis Ikeda type organisms/µL of blood (infection intensity) using a quantitative PCR assay. A calf was defined as infected if >415 organisms/µL were detected in a blood sample. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between infection intensity, mean daily liveweight gain (MDG), HCT, calf sex and time of sampling on the four farms. RESULTS: On Farms A and B nearly all calves were infected at each sampling time, on Farm C <30% were infected at any sampling and on Farm D infection prevalence increased from 32 to 79% between late spring and early autumn. On Farms C and D, from mid-summer to early autumn, mean MDG was 0.127 (95% CI=0.072-0.183) kg/day less for infected than uninfected calves (p<0.001). On all farms MDG was negatively associated with infection intensity for mid-summer and early autumn sampling times (p=0.037). The relationship between time of sampling and infection intensity varied between farms (p<0.001), and between male and female calves (p=0.018). Females had a higher infection intensity than males at the mid-summer and early autumn samplings. The association between HCT and infection intensity varied with sampling time and farm (p=0.018). There was a strong negative association between infection intensity and HCT at the late spring sampling, but in mid-summer there was no association, and in early autumn only a weak association. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study has shown that beef farmers in the North Island of New Zealand should be concerned about the welfare effects and economic impacts of T. orientalis Ikeda type infection in suckled beef calves.

ABSTRACT

Since 2012, New Zealand has suffered from an epidemic of infectious bovine anaemia associated with T. orientalis (Ikeda), an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite of cattle. Despite widespread agreement that T. orientalis (Ikeda) infection has impacted beef and dairy farming in New Zealand there is very little quantitative data to support this conclusion. A randomised controlled experimental study of the effect of T. orientalis (Ikeda) infection on the live weight, haematocrit (HCT), temperature and activity of 2-year-old Friesian bulls was conducted at a Massey University Research farm, Palmerston North. Ten out of seventeen 2-year-old Friesian bulls were injected intravenously with 30 mL whole blood from 2 clinical cases of Theileria-associated bovine anaemia and then followed over a period of 20 weeks. The bulls were blood sampled, had rectal temperature recorded and weighed 3 times weekly for 13 weeks and then once weekly thereafter until the end of the trial. Infection intensity was monitored using qPCR. All 10 inoculated bulls were successfully infected with T. orientalis (Ikeda). The results showed that the live weight response to infection was varied and the bulls could be divided into two groups based on this response. Four infected bulls showed a significant weight reduction of 41.5 kg (p < 0.0001), a financial loss of around NZ$112 per bull, compared with the other 6 bulls in the infected group, which were not different to the 7 uninfected controls. The live weight of the 4 poor growing bulls was significantly lower than the other 6 infected bulls from Day 71 post infection (p < 0.05). All ten infected bulls showed a similar decrease in HCT, with the lowest HCT reached around Day 60 to 80 post-infection, however the four infected bulls that grew poorly did have a significantly elevated HCT for the first 1 to 3 weeks post infection (p < 0.05). The 4 infected bulls which grew poorly also had a significantly higher infection intensity than the other infected bulls from Day 27 to Day 60 post-infection (p < 0.05). There was no pyrexia recorded in the infected group or control groups, instead there was a tendency for the infected group to have a lower rectal temperature from Day 5 to 70 post infection. The infected bulls walked on average 239 steps per day less than the control bulls, although this difference was not significant (p = 0.35). Overall the study clearly showed, by controlling infection date and infectious dose, that a proportion of cattle infected with T. orientalis (Ikeda) have significantly decreased live weight gains.

ABSTRACT

The present study evaluated the effect of controlled ryegrass-white clover herbage availability from day 128 until day 142 of pregnancy in comparison to unrestricted availability, on the performance of twin-bearing ewes of varying body condition score (BCS; 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0) and their lambs. It was hypothesised that under conditions of controlled herbage availability, the performance of lambs born to ewes with a greater BCS would be greater than those born to ewes with a lower BCS. During the period that the nutritional regimens were imposed, the pre- and post-grazing herbage masses of the Control regimen (1,070±69 and 801±30 kg dry matter [DM]/ha) were lower than the ad libitum regimen (1,784±69 and 1,333±33 kg DM/ha; p<0.05). The average herbage masses during lactation were 1,410±31 kg DM/ha. Nutritional regimen had no effect on ewe live weight, BCS and back fat depth or on lamb live weight, indices of colostrum uptake, maximal heat production, total litter weight weaned or survival to weaning (p>0.05). The difference in ewe BCSs and back fats observed among body condition groups was maintained throughout pregnancy (p<0.05). At weaning, ewes from the BCS2.0 group had lower BCS and live weight (2.4±0.2, 74.3±2.6 kg) than both the BCS2.5 (2.6±0.2, 78.6±2.4 kg) and BCS3.0 ewes (2.7±0.2, 79.0±2.6 kg; p<0.05), which did not differ (p>0.05). Ewe BCS group had no effect on lamb live weight at birth or weaning or on maximal heat production (p>0.05). Serum gamma glutamyl transferase concentrations of lambs born to BCS3.0 ewes were higher within 36 hours of birth than lambs born to BCS2.0 ewes and BCS2.5 ewes (51.8±1.9 vs 46.5±1.9 and 45.6±1.9 IU/mL, respectively [p<0.05]). There was, however, no effect of ewe body condition on lamb plasma glucose concentration (p>0.05). Lamb survival was the only lamb parameter that showed an interaction between ewe nutritional regimen and ewe BCS whereby survival of lambs born to BCS2.5 and BCS3.0 ewes differed but only within the Control nutritional regimen ewes (p<0.05). These results indicate farmers can provide twin-bearing ewes with pre- and post-grazing ryegrass-white clover herbage covers of approximately 1,100 and 800 kg DM/ha in late pregnancy, provided that herbage covers are 1400 in lactation, without affecting lamb performance to weaning. The present results also indicate that under these grazing conditions, there is little difference in ewe performance within the BCS range of 2.0 to 3.0 and therefore they do not need to be managed separately.

AIM: To determine flystrike incidence, and estimate genetic parameters and potential indicator traits to reduce breech strike susceptibility in Romney sheep in New Zealand. METHODS: Seventeen Romney-based flocks, on 11 farms from throughout New Zealand, were enrolled in a case-control study in 2009/10 and 2010/11. Farmers observed lambs with flystrike and recorded dag score, breech bareness score and flystrike location for each lamb. Flystrike location was classed as breech, body, belly, shoulders, head or feet. Paternity of lambs was determined from tissue samples collected from lambs and all potential sires on farms. Control lambs without flystrike were selected by matching birth year, flock and sex. Due to the majority of strike occurring in the breech, genetic parameters for breech strike were explored. Dag score and breech bareness were investigated as indirect indicators of breech strike. Heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated for breech strike, dag score and breech bareness using an animal model. RESULTS: For the 2009/10 season, 484 cases of flystrike were recorded with mean incidence rate per farm of 1.76 (min 0.47, max 2.95)%. For the 2010/11 season, 352 cases were recorded with a mean incidence rate per farm of 2.54 (min 0.43, max 8.18)%. Over both years 694/792 (88%) cases of flystrike occurred on the breech. Heritability on the observed scale for breech strike was 0.32 (SE 0.10). Heritabilities for dag score and breech bareness were 0.23 (SE 0.09) and 0.35 (SE 0.11), respectively. Breech strike had a high positive genetic correlation with dag score (0.71) and a low negative genetic correlation with breech bareness (-0.17). Breech strike had a high phenotypic correlation with dag score (0.62) and negative phenotypic correlation with breech bareness (-0.06). CONCLUSIONS: The high genetic and phenotypic correlations between breech strike and dag score makes dag score a viable option for indirect selection for breech strike resistance in Romney sheep in New Zealand. The heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations require validation in other dual-purpose breeds, before breeding values for breech strike can be implemented, for use throughout the New Zealand sheep industry.

Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for dagginess, breech, wool, and fiber traits from approximately 29,500 progeny born in 2009 and 2010 in New Zealand dual-purpose ram breeding sheep flocks. Dagginess is adherence of fecal matter to the wool, and this study investigates the genetic and phenotypic correlations between dagginess and breech and wool traits. Estimates for heritability were moderate (0.21 to 0.44) for the following traits: dag score at 3 and 8 mo (DAG3, DAG8), breech bareness, wool length, wool bulk (BULK), mean fiber diameter, mean fiber diameter SD, mean fiber diameter CV, curvature (CURV), weaning weight at 3 mo, and autumn BW. Heritability estimates for fleece weight at 12 mo and proportion of medullated fibers were high (0.49 and 0.53, respectively). Dag score at 3 mo and DAG8 had low genetic and phenotypic correlations with all traits. Breech bareness had positive genetic and phenotypic correlations with CURV and BULK and mostly negative genetic correlations with all other wool traits. In summary the quantity and attributes of wool were not primary causative factors in fecal accumulation, leaving fecal consistency and composition as the major factors.

Simple liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was applied to non-targeted metabolic analyses to discover new metabolic markers in animal plasma. Principle component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) were used to analyse LC-MS multivariate data. PCA clearly generated two separate clusters for artificially induced diabetic mice and healthy control mice. PLS-DA of time-course changes in plasma metabolites of chicks after feeding generated three clusters (pre- and immediately after feeding, 0.5-3 h after feeding and 4 h after feeding). Two separate clusters were also generated for plasma metabolites of pregnant Angus heifers with differing live-weight change profiles (gaining or losing). The accompanying PLS-DA loading plot detailed the metabolites that contribute the most to the cluster separation. In each case, the same highly hydrophilic metabolite was strongly correlated to the group separation. The metabolite was identified as betaine by LC-MS/MS. This result indicates that betaine and its metabolic precursor, choline, may be useful biomarkers to evaluate the nutritional and metabolic status of animals.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To examine via a survey the management at calving of primiparous, 2-year-old beef heifers on selected beef cattle farms in New Zealand and to investigate the causes and outcomes of assisted calving of these heifers. METHODS: An initial survey of beef cattle farmers identified that many beef breeding heifers were assisted at parturition in 2006. The outcome of assistance at parturition in the industry was not examined in that survey. A two-part questionnaire was sent to 204 respondents to the previous survey who had indicated a willingness to participate and had bred 15-month-old heifers in 2006. These respondents are unlikely to be a representative sample of all beef cattle farmers in New Zealand. A total of 127 responses were received to Part A, which encompassed mating and calving management and results and 107 responses were received to Part B, which addressed survival of calves and management of the replacement heifers. RESULTS: A total of 6726 heifers were joined with bulls in the respondents' herds in 2006. The percentage of calves born to primiparous, 2-year-old heifers present at marking was 83 (95% CI = 80-86)% of heifers joined with a bull. Overall assistance percentage was 9.7 (95% CI = 7.6-11.9)%, and 30 (95% CI = 25-35)% of 376 calves assisted at birth for which fate was reported were stillborn. The predominant cause of assisted calving was feto-maternal disproportion, and 11 (95% CI = 7-16)% of assisted heifers had died by 4 weeks postpartum. The most common time to first graze heifers with the mature cow herd was between first calving and second mating. Eighty-five (95% CI = 58-100)% of heifers that calved at 2 years of age in 2006 calved again in 2007 and this was not affected by stage of integration into the mixed-aged cow herd. Failure to conceive at second mating was the predominant reason for heifer attrition: 3.8 (95% CI = 0-16)% were culled after being diagnosed non-pregnant and a further 2.3 (95% CI = 0-18)% were carried over as empty 3-year-old heifers. CONCLUSIONS: The 85% retention of heifers as second-calving, 3-year-olds indicated that heifers were achieving adequate rebreeding rates after first calving. The survival of heifers and calves in the neonatal period could be increased by reducing the need for or improving the outcomes of assistance at parturition.
