ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Although studies have shown that Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) are common and continue to be a main source of disability and work time loss, there are few reports on elbow WMSDs. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and associated factors of elbow WMSDs. METHODS: The valid questionnaires of 57501 workers from 15 different industries nationwide were collected and the Chi-square test and logistic-regression-analysis were applied to reveal the prevalence and risk factors of elbow. RESULTS: The findings indicated that prevalence of elbow WMSDs among workers was 7.3%. The prevalence of elbow WMSDs in toy manufacturing was 21.3%, which significantly higher than that in other industries (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that aged 40 and above, married, very poor health, left-handed, lifting weights (more than 20 kg each time) , work requiring upper limb or hand force, work in an uncomfortable position, repetitive operations within one minute, using vibrating tools, work involves cold, cool winds or temperature changes, work being completed in the same workshop, work being done outdoors, frequent deal with customers , two shifts, often work overtime, staff shortage, often work for colleagues were the risk factors of elbow WMSDs.The higer education level and monthly income, and enough rest time were the protective factors of elbow WMSDs. CONCLUSION: The toy manufacturing is a high-risk industry for elbow WMSDs. The publicity and education of ergonomics knowledge should be strengthened, and the workers' ergonomics awareness should be improved to reduce the impact of WMSDs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To systematically investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with a focus on the role of BMI in this relationship. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Medline, CINAHL Complete, Chinese Periodical Full-text Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China Wanfang Database for rele-vant observational studies published up to August 2023. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The pooled effect size was calculated using a random-effects model. Sub-group and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS: The study included 54,058 participants from 10 studies. Pregnant women with a higher DII, indicating a pro-inflammatory diet, had a significantly increased risk of GDM compared to those with a lower DII, indicating an anti-inflammatory diet (pooled OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36; I²=70%, p <0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed a stronger association in normal weight stratification (OR: 1.25, 95%CI: 1.04-1.51), case-control studies (OR: 1.45, 95%CI: 1.03-2.05), Asia (OR: 1.26, 95%CI: 1.10-1.43), Europe (OR: 1.27, 95%CI: 1.09-1.48), 3-day dietary record as a dietary assessment tool (OR: 1.30, 95%CI: 1.16-1.46), physical activity adjustment (OR: 1.28, 95%CI: 1.13-1.46), and energy intake adjustment (OR: 1.33, 95%CI: 1.19-1.48). Meta-regression analysis confirmed that geographical region significantly influenced heterogeneity between studies (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: An elevated DII is independently linked to a higher risk of GDM, especially in women of normal weight.

ABSTRACT

Influenza remains a global public health threat, and the development of new antivirals is crucial to combat emerging drug-resistant influenza strains. In this study, we report the synthesis and evaluation of a sialyl lactosyl (TS)-bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate as a potential multivalent inhibitor of the influenza virus. The key trisaccharide component, TS, was efficiently prepared via a chemoenzymatic approach, followed by conjugation to dibenzocyclooctyne-modified BSA via a strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. Biophysical and biochemical assays, including surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry, hemagglutination inhibition, and neuraminidase inhibition, demonstrated the strong binding affinity of TS-BSA to the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins of the influenza virus as well as intact virion particles. Notably, TS-BSA exhibited potent inhibitory activity against viral entry and release, preventing cytopathic effects in cell culture. This multivalent presentation strategy highlights the potential of glycocluster-based antivirals for combating influenza and other drug-resistant viral strains.

ABSTRACT

Influenza viruses contribute significantly to the global health burden, necessitating the development of strategies against transmission as well as effective antiviral treatments. The present study reports a biomimetic strategy inspired by the natural antiviral properties of mucins. A bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate decorated with the multivalent neuraminidase inhibitor Zanamivir (ZA-BSA) was synthesized using copper-free click chemistry. This synthetic pseudo-mucin exhibited potent neuraminidase inhibitory activity against several influenza strains. Virus capture and growth inhibition assays demonstrated its effective absorption of virion particles and ability to prevent viral infection in nanomolar concentrations. Investigation of the underlying antiviral mechanism of ZA-BSA revealed a dual mode of action, involving disruption of the initial stages of host-cell binding and fusion by inducing viral aggregation, followed by blocking the release of newly assembled virions by targeting neuraminidase activity. Notably, the conjugate also exhibited potent inhibitory activity against Oseltamivir-resistant neuraminidase variant comparable to the monomeric Zanamivir. These findings highlight the application of multivalent drug presentation on protein scaffold to mimic mucin adsorption of viruses, together with counteracting drug resistance. This innovative approach has potential for the creation of antiviral agents against influenza and other viral infections.

ABSTRACT

With the advancement of retinal imaging, hyperreflective foci (HRF) on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images have gained significant attention as potential biological biomarkers for retinal neuroinflammation. However, these biomarkers, represented by HRF, present pose challenges in terms of localization, quantification, and require substantial time and resources. In recent years, the progress and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) have provided powerful tools for the analysis of biological markers. AI technology enables use machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) and other technologies to precise characterization of changes in biological biomarkers during disease progression and facilitates quantitative assessments. Based on ophthalmic images, AI has significant implications for early screening, diagnostic grading, treatment efficacy evaluation, treatment recommendations, and prognosis development in common ophthalmic diseases. Moreover, it will help reduce the reliance of the healthcare system on human labor, which has the potential to simplify and expedite clinical trials, enhance the reliability and professionalism of disease management, and improve the prediction of adverse events. This article offers a comprehensive review of the application of AI in combination with HRF on OCT images in ophthalmic diseases including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and other retinal diseases and presents prospects for their utilization.

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease based on the degeneration and loss of articular cartilage. Inflammation and aging play an important role in the destruction of the extracellular matrix, in which microRNA (miRNA) is a key point, such as miRNA-34a-5p. Upregulation of miRNA-34a-5p was previously reported in a rat OA model, and its inhibition significantly suppressed interleukin (IL)-1ß-induced apoptosis in rat chondrocytes. However, Oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) can exacerbate the progression of miRNA regulated OA by mediating inflammatory processes. Thus, oxidative stress effects induced via tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) in human chondrocytes were assessed in the current research by evaluating mitochondrial ROS production, mitochondrial cyclooxygenase (COX) activity, and cell apoptosis. We also analyzed the activities of antioxidant enzymes including glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Additionally, inflammatory factors, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-24, which contribute to OA development, were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results of this study indicated that miR-34a-5p/silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1)/p53 axis was involved in the ROS-induced injury of human chondrocytes. Moreover, dual-luciferase assay revealed that SIRT1 expression was directly regulated by miR-34a-5p, indicating the presence of a positive feedback loop in the miR-34a-5p/SIRT1/p53 axis that plays an important role in cell survival. However, ROS disrupted the miR-34a-5p/SIRT1/p53 axis, leading to the development of OA, and articular injection of SIRT1 agonist, SRT1720, in a rat model of OA effectively ameliorated OA progression in a dose-dependent manner. Our study confirms that miRNA-34a-5p could participate in oxidative stress responses caused by ROS and further regulate the inflammatory process via the SIRT1/p53 signaling axis, ultimately affecting the onset of OA, thus providing a new treatment strategy for clinical treatment of OA.

ABSTRACT

Background: With the increase of pancreatic tumor patients in recent years, there is an urgent need to find a way to treat pancreatic tumors. Surgery is one of the best methods for the treatment of pancreatic tumors, the success of which depends on the evaluation of peripancreatic vessels before surgery. Computed tomography (CT), as a non-invasive, fast, and economical auxiliary examination method, is undoubtedly one of the best means of clinical auxiliary examination. In this study, we investigated the impact of single-energy spectral CT imaging on the image quality of peripancreatic blood vessels and the clinical value of low-keV imaging in enhancing the image quality of peripancreatic arteriovenous vessels. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 103 patients who underwent abdominal vascular-enhanced CT examinations at the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University between December 2022 and May 2023 and who were all scanned with the dual-energy feature on the United Imaging ATLAS scanner. The images were reconstructed at 70 keV, mixed energy, and optimized single energy in the post-processing station of United Imaging Healthcare Technology Co., Ltd. The CT value and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), gastroduodenal artery (GDA), inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA), and superior mesenteric vein (SMV) were compared across energy levels, and then the image quality was subjectively evaluated. One-way analysis of variance and rank-sum tests were utilized for the statistical analysis. Results: The CT values of SMA, GDA, IPDA, and SMV in the optimal single energy group were 358.37±70.24, 323.36±88.23, 300.76±76.27, and 257.74±20.56 Hounsfield unit (HU), respectively, which were superior to those in the mixed energy (241.66±47.69, 235.17±53.71, 207.36±45.17, and 187.39±23.21 HU) and 70 keV groups (260.89±54.27, 252.41±58.87, 223.17±43.65, and 203.18±18.17 HU) (P<0.05). The diagnostic efficacy was greater in the optimal single energy group than in the other 2 groups (4.63±0.50, 3.91±0.57, and 4.23±0.83) (P<0.05). Conclusions: The optimal single energy for showing peripancreatic blood vessels is 62±7 keV when utilizing single-energy spectral CT imaging.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to explore the value of clinical features, CT imaging signs, and radiomics features in differentiating between adults and children with Mycoplasma pneumonia and seeking quantitative radiomic representations of CT imaging signs. Materials and methods: In a retrospective analysis of 981 cases of mycoplasmal pneumonia patients from November 2021 to December 2023, 590 internal data (adults:450, children: 140) randomly divided into a training set and a validation set with an 8:2 ratio and 391 external test data (adults:121; children:270) were included. Using univariate analysis, CT imaging signs and clinical features with significant differences (p < 0.05) were selected. After segmenting the lesion area on the CT image as the region of interest, 1,904 radiomic features were extracted. Then, Pearson correlation analysis (PCC) and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were used to select the radiomic features. Based on the selected features, multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to establish the clinical model, CT image model, radiomic model, and combined model. The predictive performance of each model was evaluated using ROC curves, AUC, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and precision. The AUC between each model was compared using the Delong test. Importantly, the radiomics features and quantitative and qualitative CT image features were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and analysis of variance, respectively. Results: For the individual model, the radiomics model, which was built using 45 selected features, achieved the highest AUCs in the training set, validation set, and external test set, which were 0.995 (0.992, 0.998), 0.952 (0.921, 0.978), and 0.969 (0.953, 0.982), respectively. In all models, the combined model achieved the highest AUCs, which were 0.996 (0.993, 0.998), 0.972 (0.942, 0.995), and 0.986 (0.976, 0.993) in the training set, validation set, and test set, respectively. In addition, we selected 11 radiomics features and CT image features with a correlation coefficient r greater than 0.35. Conclusion: The combined model has good diagnostic performance for differentiating between adults and children with mycoplasmal pneumonia, and different CT imaging signs are quantitatively represented by radiomics.

BACKGROUND: Several immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been linked to the occurrence of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKHD)-like uveitis. Among the ICIs, there has been no report of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) caused by a new programmed death protein-1(PD-1) monoclonal antibody (Toripalimab). CASE PRESENTATION: This paper presents a case of VKHD-like uveitis that arose following Toripalimab therapy for urothelial cancer of the bladder, and the patient experienced symptoms 10 days after the final dosage of 20 months of medication treatment. This patient with bladder uroepithelial carcinoma had severe binocular acute panuveitis with exudative retinal detachment after receiving Toripalimab therapy. Binocular VKHD-like uveitis was suggested as a diagnosis. Both eyes recovered after discontinuing immune checkpoint inhibitors and local and systemic corticosteroid treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This report suggests that VKHD-like uveitis can also occur in patients receiving novel PD-1 antibodies and the importance of paying attention to eye complications in patients receiving treatment over a long period.

ABSTRACT

Multi-component droplets from daily activities and production processes severely degrade indoor air quality. Their health hazards and removal efficiency depend on size and composition, significantly affected by evaporation and growth. The phase transition process is complex, involving a broad spectrum of droplet sizes with diverse heat and mass transfer characteristics. Components within the droplets experience simultaneous phase transitions at differing rates and mass transfer directions. This study aims to refine the existing evaporation model of single-component droplets in continuous flows by theoretically integrating the effects of varying droplet sizes and multiple components. A multi-component droplet evaporation/growth model that spans the entire range of droplet sizes has been developed, and predictions have been made based on this model. Utilizing MATLAB, this model accurately predicts the indoor dynamics of multi-component droplets, with deviations under 16 % from experiments. It improves accuracy by over 25 % across droplet sizes via dimensionless transfer coefficients and boosts precision by over 24 % for multi-component droplets with zero-diffusion transport. The radius of the droplet after phase change can reach 8.42 × 10-6 m and remains suspended in the air for an extended period. This study establishes a solid theoretical foundation for accurately predicting the indoor distribution of multi-component droplets.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is one of the top three malignancies with the highest incidence and mortality. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to identify the effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on postoperative patients with stage II-III CRC and explore the core herb combination and its mechanism. METHODS: An observational cohort study was conducted on patients diagnosed with stage II-III CRC from January 2016 to January 2021. The primary outcome was disease-free survival, which was compared between the patients who received TCM or not, and the secondary outcome was the hazard ratio. The relevance principle was used to obtain the candidate herb combinations, and the core combination was evaluated through an assessment of efficacy and representativeness. Then, biological processes and signaling pathways associated with CRC were obtained by Gene Ontology function, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes pathway, and Wikipathway. Furthermore, hub genes were screened by the Kaplan-Meier estimator, and molecular docking was employed to predict the binding sites of key ingredients to hub genes. The correlation analysis was employed for the correlations between the hub genes and tumor-infiltrating immune cells and hypoxiarelated genes. Ultimately, a quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to verify the regulation of hub genes by their major ingredients. RESULTS: A total of 707 patients were included. TCM could decrease the metastatic recurrence associated with stage II-III CRC (HR: 0.61, log-rank P < 0.05). Among those patients in the TCM group, the core combination was Baizhu → Yinchen, Chenpi, and Fuling (C combination), and its antitumor mechanism was most likely related to the regulation of BCL2L1, XIAP, and TOP1 by its key ingredients, quercetin and tangeretin. The expression of these genes was significantly correlated with both tumor-infiltrating immune cells and hypoxia- related genes. In addition, quercetin and tangeretin down-regulated the mRNA levels of BCL2L1, XIAP, and TOP1, thereby inhibiting the growth of HCT116 cells. CONCLUSION: Overall, a combination of four herbs, Baizhu → Yinchen, Chenpi, and Fuling, could reduce metastatic recurrence in postoperative patients with stage II-III CRC. The mechanism may be related to the regulation of BCL2L1, XIAP, and TOP1 by its key ingredients quercetin and tangeretin.

Background: Shift work can disrupt sleep quality and gut health. Nurses and midwives constitute approximately half of the global healthcare shift-working workforce. Our previous study revealed that most midwives were experiencing suboptimal health conditions, characterized by poor sleep quality and a high prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases. The gut-brain axis theory highlights the potential interplay between sleep quality and gut health. However, limited research focuses on this relationship among midwives. Methods: A cross-sectional survey included 2041 midwives from 87 Chinese hospitals between March and October 2023. Participants completed standardized questionnaires assessing sleep quality, gut health, depression, anxiety, and work stress. Binary logistic regression analyzed factors associated with poor sleep, and multiple linear regression examined the influence of sleep quality on gut health. Results: Over 60% of midwives reported poor sleep, with many experiencing gastrointestinal disorders. We observed a bidirectional relationship between sleep quality and gut health among midwives. After multivariable adjustments, midwives with higher gut health scores were more likely to experience poor sleep quality (odds ratio = 1.042, 95% confidence interval = 1.03-1.054). Conversely, midwives with higher sleep quality scores were also more likely to have poor gut health (ß = 0.222, 95% confidence interval = 0.529-0.797). These associations remained robust across sensitivity analyses. Furthermore, depression, anxiety, and work stress significantly affected both sleep quality and gut health among midwives. Conclusion: This study enhances our understanding of the intricate relationship between sleep quality and gut health among midwives. Poor gut health was associated with a higher risk of poor sleep, and vice versa. To improve the overall wellbeing of midwives, the findings emphasize the importance of addressing poor sleep quality and promoting gut health through maintaining a healthy diet, lifestyle, and good mental health. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings and clarify the underlying mechanisms.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged as an alternative treatment for patients with pure severe aortic regurgitation (PSAR) who are contraindicated for surgery or have a high surgical risk. However, the therapeutic efficacy and safety of TAVR in low Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score risk patients remain to be clarified. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of TAVR treatment in different STS-risk patients and to compare the adverse events between the groups. In this study, patients with PSAR who underwent TAVR at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, China, during the inclusion period were included and categorized into 3 groups based on STS scores. The baseline data, imaging results, and follow-up data of the patients were documented. Therefore, of 75 TAVR patients, 38 (50.7%) were categorized as low risk (STS <4), and 37 (49.3%) patients were categorized as intermediate and high risk (STS ≥4). Compared with patients at intermediate and high risk, those in the low-risk group were younger, had a lower body mass index, had a lower prevalence of hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and previous percutaneous coronary intervention, and had better cardiac function (p all <0.05). In the hospital and at the 1-month follow-up, the degree of aortic regurgitation and cardiac function were significantly improved. No significant difference was found between the 2 groups in the hospital or during the 30-day follow-up. In conclusion, TAVR for PSAR in low-STS-risk patients is safe and efficient during 30 days of follow-up compared with intermediate- and high-STS-risk groups. TAVR for PSAR should not be limited to inoperable or STS-defined high-risk patients. Long-term follow-up is needed for further investigation.

ABSTRACT

Low-temperature processed electron transport layer (ETL) of TiO2 that is widely used in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has inherent low carrier mobility, resulting in insufficient photogenerated electron transport and thus recombination loss at buried interface. Herein, we demonstrate an effective strategy of laser embedding of p-n homojunctions in the TiO2 ETL to accelerate electron transport in PSCs, through localized build-in electric fields that enables boosted electron mobility by two orders of magnitude. Such embedding is found significantly helpful for not only the enhanced crystallization quality of TiO2 ETL, but the fabrication of perovskite films with larger-grain and the less-trap-states. The embedded p-n homojunction enables also the modulation of interfacial energy level between perovskite layers and ETLs, favoring for the reduced voltage deficit of PSCs. Benefiting from these merits, the formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) PSCs employing such ETLs deliver a champion efficiency of 25.50%, along with much-improved device stability under harsh conditions, i.e., maintain over 95% of their initial efficiency after operation at maximum power point under continuous heat and illumination for 500 h, as well as mixed-cation PSCs with a champion efficiency of 22.02% and over 3000 h of ambient storage under humidity stability of 40%. Present study offers new possibilities of regulating charge transport layers via p-n homojunction embedding for high performance optoelectronics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is high and there is currently no easy way to detect early HHD. Explore the application of radiomics using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) non-enhanced cine sequences in diagnosing HHD and latent cardiac changes caused by hypertension. METHODS: 132 patients who underwent CMR scanning were divided into groups: HHD (42), hypertension with normal cardiac structure and function (HWN) group (46), and normal control (NOR) group (44). Myocardial regions of the end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic (ES) phases of the CMR short-axis cine sequence images were segmented into regions of interest (ROI). Three feature subsets (ED, ES, and ED combined with ES) were established after radiomic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator feature selection. Nine radiomic models were built using random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and naive Bayes. Model performance was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curves, and metrics like accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), precision, recall, and specificity. RESULTS: The feature subsets included first-order, shape, and texture features. SVM of ED combined with ES achieved the highest accuracy (0.833), with a macro-average AUC of 0.941. AUCs for HHD, HWN, and NOR identification were 0.967, 0.876, and 0.963, respectively. Precisions were 0.972, 0.740, and 0.826; recalls were 0.833, 0.804, and 0.863, respectively; and specificities were 0.989, 0.863, and 0.909, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomics technology using CMR non-enhanced cine sequences can detect early cardiac changes due to hypertension. It holds promise for future use in screening for latent cardiac damage in early HHD.

ABSTRACT

Accurate diagnosis and effective antiviral treatments are urgently needed for the prevention and control of flu caused by influenza viruses. In this study, a novel oleanic acid (OA) functionalized gold nanorod OA-AuNP was prepared through a convenient ligand-exchange reaction. As hemagglutinin (HA) on the viral surface binds strongly to the multiple OA molecules on the surface of the nanoparticle, the prepared OA-AuNP was found to exhibit potent antiviral activity against a wide range of influenza A virus strains. Furthermore, the change in color resulting from the specific binding between HA and OA and the resultant aggregation of the OA-AuNP can be visually observed or measured by UV-vis spectra with a detection limit of 2 and 0.18 hemagglutination units (HAU), respectively, which is comparable to the commercially available influenza colloid gold rapid diagnostic kits. These findings demonstrate the potential of the OA-AuNP for the development of novel multivalent antiviral conjugates and the diagnosis of influenza virus.

ABSTRACT

The limited recapitulation of critical cancer features in 2D cultures causes poor translatability of preclinical results from in vitro assays to in vivo tumor models. This contributes to slow drug development with a low success rate. 3D cultures better recapitulate the tumor microenvironment, enabling more accurate predictions when screening drug candidates and improving the development of chemotherapeutics. Platinum (Pt) (IV) compounds are promising prodrugs designed to reduce the severe systemic toxicity of widely used Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Pt(II) drugs such as cisplatin. Here, this work presents spatiotemporal evaluations in 3D colorectal cancer (CRC) spheroids of mitochondria-targeting Pt(IV) complexes. CRC spheroids provide a greater pathophysiological recapitulation of in vivo tumors than 2D cultures by a marked upregulation of the ABCG2 chemoresistance marker expression. Furthermore, new 3D-staining protocols are introduced to evaluate the real-time decrease in mitochondria membrane potential (ΔΨ) in CRC spheroids, and a Pt-sensing dye to quantify the Pt mitochondrial accumulation. Finally, this work demonstrates a correlation between in vitro results and the efficacy of the compounds in vivo. Overall, the CRC spheroids represent a fast and cost-effective model to assess the behavior of Pt compounds in vitro and predict their translational potential in CRC treatment.

ABSTRACT

The pursuit of multifunctional electrocatalysts holds significant importance due to their comprehension of material chemistry. Amorphous materials are particularly appealing, yet they pose challenges in terms of rational design due to their structural disorder and thermal instability. Herein, we propose a strategy that entails the tandem (low-temperature/250-350 °C) pyrolysis of molecular clusters, enabling preservation of the local short-range structures of the precursor Schiff base nickel (Ni3[2(C21H24N3Ni1.5O6)]). The temperature-dependent residuals demonstrate exceptional activity and stability for at least three distinct electrocatalytic processes, including the oxygen evolution reaction (η10 = 197 mV), urea oxidation reaction (η10 = 1.339 V), and methanol oxidation reaction (1358 mA cm-2 at 0.56 V). Three distinct nickel atom motifs are discovered for three efficient electrocatalytic reactions (Ni1 and Ni1' are preferred for UOR/MOR, while Ni2 is preferred for OER). Our discoveries pave the way for the potential development of multifunctional electrocatalysts through disordered engineering in molecular clusters under tandem pyrolysis.

BACKGROUND: Vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) represent a recently discovered vascular pattern associated with novel metastasis mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, it seems that no one have focused on predicting VETC status in small HCC (sHCC). This study aimed to develop a new nomogram for predicting VETC positivity using preoperative clinical data and image features in sHCC (≤ 3 cm) patients. AIM: To construct a nomogram that combines preoperative clinical parameters and image features to predict patterns of VETC and evaluate the prognosis of sHCC patients. METHODS: A total of 309 patients with sHCC, who underwent segmental resection and had their VETC status confirmed, were included in the study. These patients were recruited from three different hospitals: Hospital 1 contributed 177 patients for the training set, Hospital 2 provided 78 patients for the test set, and Hospital 3 provided 54 patients for the validation set. Independent predictors of VETC were identified through univariate and multivariate logistic analyses. These independent predictors were then used to construct a VETC prediction model for sHCC. The model's performance was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve, and clinical decision curve. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to confirm whether the predicted VETC status by the model is associated with early recurrence, just as it is with the actual VETC status and early recurrence. RESULTS: Alpha-fetoprotein_lg10, carbohydrate antigen 199, irregular shape, non-smooth margin, and arterial peritumoral enhancement were identified as independent predictors of VETC. The model incorporating these predictors demonstrated strong predictive performance. The AUC was 0.811 for the training set, 0.800 for the test set, and 0.791 for the validation set. The calibration curve indicated that the predicted probability was consistent with the actual VETC status in all three sets. Furthermore, the decision curve analysis demonstrated the clinical benefits of our model for patients with sHCC. Finally, early recurrence was more likely to occur in the VETC-positive group compared to the VETC-negative group, regardless of whether considering the actual or predicted VETC status. CONCLUSION: Our novel prediction model demonstrates strong performance in predicting VETC positivity in sHCC (≤ 3 cm) patients, and it holds potential for predicting early recurrence. This model equips clinicians with valuable information to make informed clinical treatment decisions.
