ABSTRACT

Background and aims: This study investigated the biochemical components present in the leaves of Cissus assamica. The primary aim was to analyze these components using advanced techniques and assess their potential therapeutic applications. Methodology: Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and Mass Spectral analysis were employed to identify and characterize the compounds in Cissus assamica leaves. The mass spectra of each compound were compared with data from the Wiley and NIST libraries to determine their names, molecular masses, and chemical structures. FT-IR analysis identified characteristic functional groups by their specific frequencies. Results and discussion: FT-IR spectroscopic analysis revealed significant molecular vibrations at frequencies of 3265.63, 2853.81, 1638.60, 1469.21, and 1384.95 cm⁻¹, indicating the presence of specific functional groups. The GC-MS analysis identified distinct compounds, such as "aR-Turmerone," "Curlone," "7,8-Epoxylanostan-11-ol, 3-acetoxy-," "13-Docosenamide, (Z)-," "Phenol, 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-," "9,19-Cyclolanostan-3-ol, 24,24-epoxymethano-, acetate," and "Quinoline-5,8-dione-6-ol, 7-[[(4-cyclohexylbutyl)amino]methyl]-." These compounds exhibited potential therapeutic applications. Their cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antidiarrheal, anti-hyperglycemic, and pain-relieving properties were evaluated by comparing them with reference ligands targeting specific receptors, including dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), kappa opioid receptor (KOR), glucose transporter 3 (GLUT 3), and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that Cissus assamica leaves contain bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic benefits for treating infections, diarrhea, hyperglycemia, and pain. However, further research is needed to conduct comprehensive phytochemical screening and establish the precise mechanisms of action for the crude extract or the plant-derived compounds.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and young adults are of major concern to parents. However, the prevalence and associated factors related to these issues in Bangladeshi adolescents and young adults remain unclear to the best of our knowledge. The aim of this study is to assess PSU and ADHD in the context of adolescent and young adult age groups in Bangladesh. METHODS: The present study collected data from diverse geographical locations in Bangladesh via face-to-face surveys using stratified random sampling methods. We considered age, sex, and geographic location stratification criteria. A total of 578 respondents participated in the survey initially. From this, we discarded 36 responses after screening because the information provided was insufficient or incomplete response. In the end, 542 replies were incorporated into the final analysis. PSU and ADHD depend on several factors, including the individual's demographic background. RESULTS: The prevalence of PSU and ADHD symptoms in adolescents and young adults in Bangladesh is 61.44% and 37.45%, respectively based on our findings. The symptoms of PSU are correlated with age, education level, family type (nuclear/joint), sleeping pattern, physical exercise, and residence area. ADHD symptoms are correlated with age, education level, living with family, smoking habit, physical disability, sleeping pattern, physical exercise, residence area, and PSU. Also, we observed that ADHD and PSU symptoms are positively correlated with each other. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of young adults and adolescents reported PSU and ADHD symptoms. The present findings have practical implications in clinical psychology, psychotherapy, and related policy considerations. We propose to develop an inclusive interventional strategy and community-based programs to address PSU and ADHD-related issues.

ABSTRACT

Expelling antibiotic molecules out of the cell wall through multiple efflux pumps is one of the potential mechanisms of developing resistance against a wide number of antibiotics in Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the antibiotic susceptibility profile and the prevalence of different efflux pump genes i.e., norA, norB, norC, mepA, sepA, mdeA, qacA/B, and smr in the clinical isolates of S. aureus. Sixty clinical isolates were collected from a tertiary level hospital in Bangladesh. The disc diffusion method using ten antibiotics of different classes was used to discern the susceptibility profile. polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed to observe the resistance patterns and to detect the presence of plasmid and chromosomal encoded genes. Among the clinical isolates, 60% (36 out of 60) of the samples were Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), whereas 55% (33 out of 60) of the bacterial samples were found to be multi-drug resistant. The bacteria showed higher resistance to vancomycin (73.33%), followed by ciprofloxacin (60%), cefixime (53.33%), azithromycin (43.33%), and amoxicillin (31.67%). The prevalence of the chromosomally-encoded efflux genes norA (91.67%), norB (90%), norC (93.33%), mepA (93.33%), sepA (98.33%), and mdeA (93.33%) were extremely high with a minor portion of them carrying the plasmid-encoded genes qacA/B (20%) and smr (8.33%). Several genetic combinations of efflux pump genes were revealed, among which norA + norB + norC + mepA + sepA + mdeA was the most widely distributed combination among MRSA and MSSA bacteria that conferred resistance against ciprofloxacin and probably vancomycin. Based on the present study, it is evident that the presence of multiple efflux genes potentiated the drug extrusion activity and may play a pivotal role in the development of multidrug resistance in S. aureus.
