ABSTRACT

Background: The utilization of in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) has witnessed a significant increase in recent years. However, the comparative perinatal and neonatal outcomes compared to natural pregnancies are unclear. This study aims to compare the outcomes of pregnancies from IVF and ICSI with natural pregnancies. Methods: This retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study was conducted at the First People's Hospital of Shangqiu and The First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, involving 5,628 patients from February 2019 to December 2022. It compared pregnancies achieved through IVF/ICSI with those conceived naturally. The primary outcomes assessed were perinatal complications and neonatal health parameters. Propensity score matching and multivariate logistic regression analysis were employed to adjust for potential confounders and identify independent associations. Results: After propensity score matching, the IVF/ICSI group demonstrated significantly higher rates of placental adherence (12.1% vs. 7.4%, p < 0.001) and postpartum hemorrhage (11.1% vs. 7.6%, p = 0.002) compared to the NP group. Neonates in the IVF/ICSI group had a lower gestational age (38.21 ± 2.12 weeks vs. 38.63 ± 2.29 weeks, p < 0.001), reduced birth weight (3159.42 ± 722.75 g vs. 3211.31 ± 624.42 g, p = 0.032), and an increased preterm delivery rate (11.2% vs. 8.9%, p = 0.017). Multivariate analysis further confirmed these findings, highlighting the independent associations between IVF/ICSI and these adverse outcomes. Conclusion: This study suggests a potential correlation between the use of IVF/ICSI and unfavorable perinatal and neonatal outcomes. These findings underscore the critical need for ongoing monitoring and research efforts to enhance the safety and effectiveness of these reproductive technologies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A cross-sectional population-based survey in the Beichen district of Tianjin was conducted to estimate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) among the population over 50 years old with Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) II and Chinese expert consensus (CEC) criteria. METHODS: A total of 5791 subjects over 50 years old were enrolled. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, lipid layer thickness (LLT), partial blink ratio (PBR), fluorescein tear film breakup time (FBUT), Schirmer I test (SIT), fluorescein staining, meibomian gland dropout, meibomian gland expression scores (MES) and quantity scores (MQS) was assessed. Additionally, basic information, weight, disease history, living habits, anxiety, and depression condition were collected. RESULTS: According to the CEC, the prevalence of DED was 39.0%, whereas 44.0% based on DEWS II. The prevalence of DED increased with age and was substantially greater among women (41.1%, 95% CI, 39.5-42.6%) than males (35.1%, 95% CI, 33.1 -37.2%) (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the severity of DED was more severe in women (p = 0.006). The associated risk factors were age, female, depression, smoking, insomnia, and glaucoma. On the other hand, 53.6% of these populations were diagnosed as asymptomatic DED, and the morbidity was higher in males (p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of DED in China was relatively high, which was associated with aging, female(sex), depression, smoking and sleep problems. Hence, it is crucial for clinicians and caregivers to be aware of the existence of asymptomatic DED within the susceptible population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Essential oils extracted from cinnamon bark and oregano are rich in cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol and show potential for promoting animal performance. However, their impact on rumen biohydrogenation and the fatty acid composition of meat has not been reported. The hypothesis of this study was that a blend of essential oils rich in cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol would inhibit rumen biohydrogenation and promote the accumulation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in lamb meat. The present study evaluated the effect of a blend essential oil (EO) rich in cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol on the nutrient digestibility, rumen biohydrogenation, growth performance, and fatty acid profile of the longissimus lumborum of lambs. RESULTS: Sixty male lambs with an average age of 84 ± 0.98 days and initial body mass of 25.4 ± 0.29 kg (mean ± standard deviation) were assigned randomly to four diets, and supplemented with 0 (EO0), 30 (EO30), 60 (EO60), and 120 (EO120) mg kg-1 dry matter of EO for 60 days. Although dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility all showed a linear decrease (P ≤ 0.02) with increasing quantities of EO, final body mass and average daily gain increased linearly (P = 0.04), and average daily weight gain (ADG)/dry matter intake (DMI) tended to increase linearly (P = 0.07). Increasing EO supplementation resulted in a linear decrease in total volatile fatty acid concentration, acetate molar percentage, and acetate-to-propionate ratio (P ≤ 0.03), with the EO120 treatment being lower than the other EO treatments (P ≤ 0.05). Seven lambs from the EO120 treatment and seven lambs from the EO0 treatment were randomly slaughtered. It was observed that the proportions of C18:2n6c and PUFA in longissimus lumborum were higher in the EO120 treatment than the EO0 treatment (P ≤ 0.05). The relative abundance of Firmicutes in the rumen was decreased by the EO120 treatment in comparison with the EO0 treatment (P ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, the predicted relative abundances of genes encoding for conjugated linoleic acid reductase tended to decrease with the EO120 treatment (P = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that supplementation of the EO blend rich in cinnamaldehyde and carvacrol can enhance lamb growth performance and promote the deposition of desirable PUFAs in meat. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of multi-petawatt laser facilities is expected to push forward the maximum energy gain that can be achieved in a single stage of a laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) to tens of giga-electron volts, which begs the question-is it likely to impact particle physics by providing a truly compact particle collider? Colliders have very stringent requirements on beam energy, acceleration efficiency, and beam quality. In this article, we propose an LWFA scheme that can for the first time simultaneously achieve hitherto unrealized acceleration efficiency from the laser to the electron beam of >20% and a sub-1% energy spread using a stepwise plasma structure and a nonlinearly chirped laser pulse. Three-dimensional high-fidelity simulations show that the nonlinear chirp can effectively mitigate the laser waveform distortion and lengthen the acceleration distance. This, combined with an interstage rephasing process in the stepwise plasma, can triple the beam energy gain compared to that in a uniform plasma for a fixed laser energy, thereby dramatically increasing the efficiency. A dynamic beam loading effect can almost perfectly cancel the energy chirp that arises during the acceleration, leading to the sub-percent energy spread. This scheme is highly scalable and can be applied to petawatt LWFA scenarios. Scaling laws are obtained, which suggest that electron beams with parameters relevant for a Higgs factory could be reached with the proposed high-efficiency, low-energy-spread scheme.

ABSTRACT

Chronic neutrophil leukemia (CNL) is a rare and life-threatening disease. Cases of CNL combined with lymphoma are rare. Here, we report a case of CNL with T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (T-ALL/LBL) in a 28-year-old male. After a regimen of ruxolitinib, VICLP (Vincristine, Idarubicin, Cyclophosphamide, Prednisone, Peg-asparaginase) regimen, high-dose cytarabine, and methotrexate regimens, the patient's bone marrow condition partially resolved. However, when the disease relapsed four months later, despite attempts with selinexor, venetoclax, and CAG(aclarubicin hydrochloride, Algocytidine, Granulocyte Stimulating Factor) chemotherapy, the leukocytes and peripheral blood primitive cells reduced, but the bone marrow did not achieve remission. This pathogenesis may be related to microenvironmental immune escape under prolonged inflammatory stimulation and gene disruption affecting protein function due to colony-stimulating factor 3 receptor gene (CSF3R) mutations. For this type of disease, early intervention may delay disease progression.

ABSTRACT

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is commonly used to dissolve water-insoluble drugs due to its dipolar and aprotic properties. It also serves as a vehicle in many pharmacological studies. However, it has been reported that DMSO can induce seizures in human patients, lower seizure threshold in vivo, and modulate ion receptors activities in vitro. Therefore, we investigated here the effect of 0.03 % and 0.06 % DMSO, which are 10-50 times lower than what usually employed in previous studies, in the 4-aminopyridine (4AP) model of epileptiform synchronization in male mouse brain slices. We found that 0.03 % and 0.06 % DMSO increase 4AP-induced ictal discharge rate, while 0.06 % DMSO decreases ictal discharge duration. Our results suggest that the effects of DMSO on neuronal excitability deserve further analysis and that investigators need to be aware of its confounding effect as a solvent, even at very low concentrations.

ABSTRACT

Pearl and nacre powders have been valuable traditional Chinese medicines with whitening properties for thousands of years. We utilized a high-temperature and high-pressure method along with compound enzyme digestion to prepare the enzymatic hydrolysates of nacre powder of Pinctada martensii (NP-PMH). The peptides were identified using LC-MS/MS and screened through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. The interactions between peptides and tyrosinase were elucidated through enzyme kinetics, circular dichroism spectropolarimetry, and isothermal titration calorimetry. Additionally, their inhibitory effects on B16F10 cells were explored. The results showed that a tyrosinase-inhibitory peptide (Ala-His-Tyr-Tyr-Asp, AHYYD) was identified, which inhibited tyrosinase with an IC50 value of 2.012 ± 0.088 mM. The results of the in vitro interactions showed that AHYYD exhibited a mixed-type inhibition of tyrosinase and also led to a more compact enzyme structure. The binding reactions of AHYYD with tyrosinase were spontaneous, leading to the formation of a new set of binding sites on the tyrosinase. The B16F10 cell-whitening assay revealed that AHYYD could reduce the melanin content of the cells by directly inhibiting the activity of intracellular tyrosinase. Additionally, it indirectly affects melanin production by acting as an antioxidant. These results suggest that AHYYD could be widely used as a tyrosinase inhibitor in whitening foods and pharmaceuticals.

ABSTRACT

Bacterial infections have emerged as a significant contributor to global mortality and morbidity rates. Herein, we introduce a dual fluorescence "turn-on" supramolecular sensor array composed of three assembled complexes (C1-C3), formed from three positively charged fluorophores (A1-A3) and one cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). The ability of this three-element array to simultaneously recognize 10 bacterial species within just 30 s was remarkable, boasting an impressive 100% accuracy. Additionally, the array excelled at distinguishing among various bacterial mixtures and enabled the quantitative detection of common bacterial strains. Notably, it has been skillfully applied to differentiate 10 bacterial samples in urine, achieving excellent differentiation and showcasing promising potential for medical diagnostic applications.

ABSTRACT

Tomato disease image recognition plays a crucial role in agricultural production. Today, while machine vision methods based on deep learning have achieved some success in disease recognition, they still face several challenges. These include issues such as imbalanced datasets, unclear disease features, small inter-class differences, and large intra-class variations. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a method for classifying and recognizing tomato leaf diseases based on machine vision. First, to enhance the disease feature details in images, a piecewise linear transformation method is used for image enhancement, and oversampling is employed to expand the dataset, compensating for the imbalanced dataset. Next, this paper introduces a convolutional block with a dual attention mechanism called DAC Block, which is used to construct a lightweight model named LDAMNet. The DAC Block innovatively uses Hybrid Channel Attention (HCA) and Coordinate Attention (CSA) to process channel information and spatial information of input images respectively, enhancing the model's feature extraction capabilities. Additionally, this paper proposes a Robust Cross-Entropy (RCE) loss function that is robust to noisy labels, aimed at reducing the impact of noisy labels on the LDAMNet model during training. Experimental results show that this method achieves an average recognition accuracy of 98.71% on the tomato disease dataset, effectively retaining disease information in images and capturing disease areas. Furthermore, the method also demonstrates strong recognition capabilities on rice crop disease datasets, indicating good generalization performance and the ability to function effectively in disease recognition across different crops. The research findings of this paper provide new ideas and methods for the field of crop disease recognition. However, future research needs to further optimize the model's structure and computational efficiency, and validate its application effects in more practical scenarios.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Investigate the clinical characteristics of splenomegaly secondary to acute pancreatitis (SSAP) and construct a nomogram prediction model based on Lasso-Logistic regression. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted to analyze the laboratory parameters and computed tomography (CT) imaging of acute pancreatitis (AP) patients recruited at Xuanwu Hospital from December 2014 to December 2021. Lasso regression was used to identify risk factors, and a novel nomogram was developed. The performance of the nomogram in discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness was evaluated through internal validation. RESULTS: The prevalence of SSAP was 9.2% (88/950), with the first detection occurring 65(30, 125) days after AP onset. Compared with the control group, the SSAP group exhibited a higher frequency of persistent respiratory failure, persistent renal failure, infected pancreatic necrosis, and severe AP, along with an increased need for surgery and longer hospital stay (P < 0.05 for all). There were 185 and 79 patients in the training and internal validation cohorts, respectively. Variables screened by Lasso regression, including platelet count, white blood cell (WBC) count, local complications, and modified CT severity index (mCTSI), were incorporated into the Logistic model. Multivariate analysis showed that WBC count ≦9.71 × 109/L, platelet count ≦140 × 109/L, mCTSI ≧8, and the presence of local complications were independently associated with the occurrence of SSAP. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.790. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed that the model had good fitness (P = 0.954). Additionally, the nomogram performed well in the internal validation cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: SSAP is relatively common, and patients with this condition often have a worse clinical prognosis. Patients with low WBC and platelet counts, high mCTSI, and local complications in the early stages of the illness are at a higher risk for SSAP. A simple nomogram tool can be helpful for early prediction of SSAP.

ABSTRACT

Coal mines are significant anthropogenic sources of methane emissions, detectable and traceable from high spatial resolution satellites. Nevertheless, estimating local or regional-scale coal mine methane emission intensities based on high-resolution satellite observations remains challenging. In this study, we devise a novel interpolation algorithm based on high-resolution satellite observations (including Gaofen5-01A/02, Ziyuan-1 02D, PRISMA, GHGSat-C1 to C5, EnMAP, and EMIT) and conduct assessments of annual mean coal mine methane emissions in Shanxi Province, China, one of the world's largest coal-producing regions, spanning the period 2019 to 2023 across various scales: point-source, local, and regional. We use high-resolution satellite observations to perform interpolation-based estimations of methane emissions from three typical coal-mining areas. This approach, known as IPLTSO (Interpolation based on Satellite Observations), provides spatially explicit maps of methane emission intensities in these areas, thereby providing a novel local-scale coal mine methane emission inventory derived from high-resolution top-down observations. For regional-scale estimation and mapping, we utilize high-resolution satellite data to complement and substitute facility-level emission inventories for interpolation (IPLTSO+GCMT, Interpolation based on Satellite Observations and Global Coal Mine Tracker). We evaluate our IPLTSO and IPLTSO+GCMT estimation with emission inventories, top-down methane emission estimates from TROPOMI observations, and TROPOMI's methane concentration enhancements. The results suggest a notable right-skewed distribution of methane emission flux rates from coal mine point sources. Our IPLTSO+GCMT estimates the annual average coal mine methane emission in Shanxi Province from 2019 to 2023 at 8.9 ± 0.5 Tg/yr, marginally surpassing top-down inversion results from TROPOMI (8.5 ± 0.6 Tg/yr in 2019 and 8.6 ± 0.6 Tg/yr in 2020). Furthermore, the spatial patterns of methane emission intensity delineated by IPLTSO+GCMT and IPLTSO closely mirror those observed in TROPOMI's methane enhancements. Our comparative assessment underscores the superior performance and substantial potential of the developed interpolation algorithm based on high-resolution satellite observations for multi-scale estimation of coal mine methane emissions.

ABSTRACT

Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) is widely used in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to prevent graft failure and severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). We developed a rATG-targeted dosing strategy based on the optimal areas under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of active rATG. This study compared the outcomes of the optimal AUC arm with nonoptimal AUC arm to assess the effect of the rATG-targeted dosing strategy. Eighty patients (median age: 32 years) with hematological malignancies who received their first haplo-PBSCT were enrolled successively. With rATG-targeted dosing, the AUC values of 60 patients (75%, optimal AUC arm) fell within the optimal range (100-148.5 UE/mL/day) and 20 fell beyond this range (nonoptimal AUC arm). In the historical control group of 102 haplo-PBSCT patients who received a fixed dose of rATG (10 mg/kg), less patients fell within the optimal range (57.8%, P = .016). Looking at the nonoptimal AUC arms in both groups, lower cumulative incidence of CMV was noted in the targeted dosing group compared with the historical control group(50.0%, 95% CI, 30.8%-72.9% versus 81.4%, 95% CI, 68.6%-91.3%; P = .004). The cumulative incidences of EBV, relapse, overall survival and disease-free survival tended to be superior in the nonoptimal AUC arm in the targeted dosing group compared with the historical control. In the targeted dosing group, the cumulative incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation on day +180 tended to be lower in the optimal AUC arm (30.0%, 95% CI, 20.1%-43.3%) compared with the nonoptimal AUC arm (50.0%, 95% CI, 30.8%-72.9%, P = .199) without statistical difference. There were no significant differences of acute or chronic GVHD, relapse, nonrelapse mortality, overall survival, disease-free survival or lymphocyte reconstitution between the two arms. In conclusion, the rATG-targeted dosing strategy made the exposure of active rATG in more patients with the optimal AUC range. Even patients who fell beyond this range would still benefit from the strategy.

ABSTRACT

There are only a few examples being reported for the simultaneous control of central chirality and axial chirality because it is more challenging. Herein, we report an iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydroarylation of unactivated alkenes with heterobiaryls to simultaneously construct axial and central chirality. The reaction showed a broad substrate scope and delivered the products with satisfactory results. The results of the control experiments demonstrated that the FerroLANE ligand promotes the reaction to proceed along a specific modified Chalk-Harrod mechanism.

Objectives: While electrical stimulation has been demonstrated to improve medical research council (MRC) scores in critically ill patients, its effectiveness remains a subject of debate. This meta-analysis aimed to discuss recent insights into the effectiveness of electrical stimulation in improving muscle strength and its effects on different clinical outcomes in critically ill adults. Methods: A comprehensive search of major electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase, was conducted from inception to June 15, 2024, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of electrical stimulation in critically ill patients. The analysis focused on comparing electrical stimulation to standard care, sham interventions, or placebo. Outcomes of interest included MRC scores, duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), mortality rate, and intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital length of stay (LOS). Results: A total of 23 RCTs, including 1798 patients, met the inclusion criteria. The findings demonstrated a significant benefit of electrical stimulation over usual care in enhancing global muscle strength, as measured by MRC scores (MD =3.62, 95% CI 0.94 to 6.30, p = 0.0008, I2 = 87%). While subgroup analysis of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) demonstrated no significant effect on ICU LOS, sensitivity analysis indicated a potential reduction in ICU LOS for both EMS (MD = -11.0, 95% CI -21.12 to -0.88, p = 0.03) and electrical stimulation overall (MD = -1.02, 95% CI -1.96 to -0.08, p = 0.03) compared to the control group. In addition, sensitivity analysis suggested that both electrical stimulation (MD = -2.38, 95% CI -3.81 to -0.94, p = 0.001) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) specifically (MD = -2.36, 95% CI -3.85 to -0.88, p = 0.002) may contribute to a decrease in hospital LOS. No statistically significant differences were observed in mortality or duration of MV. Conclusion: Electrical stimulation appears to be an effective intervention for improving MRC scores in critically ill patients. However, further research is warranted to explain the potential effects of electrical stimulation on hospital LOS and ICU LOS. ABSTRACT

Sulfite oxidation is critical for the stable operation of desulfurization process and the treatment & recovery of desulfurization by-products. The Fe and Co oxides modified super hydrophobic layer was prepared on tubular ceramic membranes using hydrothermal synthesis and surface modifications to realize the combination of the membrane catalysis and membrane aeration. These two oxides were approximately two-layer distributed on the membrane surface, among which the Fe2O3 located in the bottom layer and the Co3O4 located in the upper layer. The catalytic rate of the bifunctional membrane was about 5.8 times than that of the original ceramic membrane, which was decreased with the increasing of Fe/Co ratio and declined after an initial rise with the increase of urea and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The conjoint effect of Fe and Co could improve the catalytic performance and reduce the dissolution loss of catalyzer. The oxidation rate tended to be constant after a 15 % decrease in 7 times experiments.

ABSTRACT

Background: Gross motor coordination (GMC) plays a crucial factor in children's motor development and daily activities. It encompasses various sub-capacities, such as spatial orientation, rhythm, and motor reaction, collectively referred to as basic coordination capacities (BCC). However, children who are overweight and obese (OW/OB) often display poorer GMC. This study aims to examine the impact of gender and weight status (BMI categories) on children's GMC and BCC. It also seeks to investigate the impact of BCC and BMI on GMC. Method: The study involved 266 participants, 135 in the NW group (boys: n = 75; girls: n = 60) and 131 in the OW/OB group (boys: n = 68; girls: n = 63). An NW status is defined by a BMI z-score between ≥-2SD to ≤1SD, while an OW/OB status corresponds to a BMI z-score > 1SD. Physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children, developed by the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. We used six field tests to evaluate BCC, including single leg standing test (static balance), YBT (dynamic balance), rhythmic sprint test (rhythm), reaction time test (motor reaction), target standing broad test (kinesthetic differentiation), and numbered medicine ball running test (spatial orientation). GMC was evaluated with Kiphard-Schilling's Body Coordination Test (KTK). Result: The motor quotient (MQ) was primarily affected by weight status (F = 516.599, p < 0.001; gender: F = 6.694, p = 0.01), with no significant interaction effect (F = 0.062, p = 0.803). In BCC, gender had a significant main effect on rhythm capacity (F = 29.611, p < 0.001) and static balance (F = 11.257, p = 0.001) but did not significant influence other sub-capacities (p > 0.05). Weight status impacted dynamic balance (F = 11.164, p = 0.001). The interaction of gender and weight status significantly impacted motor reaction (F = 1.471, p = 0.024) and kinesthetic differentiation (F = 5.454, p = 0.02), but did not affect other sub-capacities (p > 0.05). The physical activity was not significant affected by gender (F = 0.099, p = 0.753), weight status (F = 0.171, p = 0.679) and the interactions of two variables (F = 0.06, p = 0.806). In the regression analysis, except motor reaction (p > 0.05), other BCC sub-capacities influenced GMC to varying extents (ß = -0.103-0.189, p < 0.05). Nonetheless, only two types of balance significantly mediated the relationship between BMI and GMC (BMI→MQ: ß = -0.543, p < 0.001; BMI→YBT: ß = -0.315, p < 0.001; BMI→SLS: ß = -0.282, p < 0.001; SLS→MQ: ß = 0.189, p < 0.001; YBT→MQ: ß = 0.182, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Compared to gender, the main effect of weight status on most GMC and BCC's sub-capacities was more pronounced. OW/OB children exhibited poorer GMC, which is related to their reduced static and dynamic balance due to excess weight. Kinesthetic differentiation, spatial orientation, and rhythm capacity are not significantly associated with BMI, but these sub-capacities positively influence gross motor coordination (GMC), except for hand-eye motor reaction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exogenous inhibition of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) was believed to alleviate acute pancreatitis (AP). This study aimed to comprehensively explore the key biological behavior of NETs including timing and pathogenesis in AP by integrating of single cell RNA sequencing(scRNA-seq) and bulk RNA-seq. METHODS: Differentially expressed NETs-related genes and the hub genes of NETs were screened by bulk RNA-seq. ScRNA-seq was used to identify the cell types in pancreas of AP mice and to depict the transcriptomic maps in neutrophils. The mouse AP models were build to verify the timing of initiation of NETs and underlying pathogenesis of damage on pancreas acinar cells. RESULTS: Tlr4 and Ccl3 were screened for hub genes by bulk RNA-seq. The trajectory analysis of neutrophils showed that high expression of Ccl3, Cybb and Padi4 can be observed in the middle stage during AP. Macrophages might be essential in the biological behavior of neutrophils and NETs. Through animal models, we presented that extensive NETs structures were formed at mid-stage of inflammation, accompanied by more serious pancreas and lung damage. NETs might promote necroptosis and macrophage infiltration in AP, and the damage on pancreatic injury could be regulated by Tlr4 pathway. Ccl3 was considered to recruit neutrophils and promote NETs formation. CONCLUSION: The findings explored the underlying timing and pathogenesis of NETs in AP for the first time, which provided gene targets for further studies.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the effects of the addition of biochar prepared at 700 °C with different dosages on the anaerobic digestion of food waste. The biochar addition at a concentration of 10.0 g/L increased the cumulative methane yield by 128%, and daily methane production was also significantly promoted. The addition of biochar derived from poplar sawdust significantly increased the relative abundance of dominant bacteria for anaerobic digestion by 85.54-2530% and promoted the degradation of refractory organic matter and the transfer of materials between the hydrolysis and acid production stages. Further analysis has demonstrated that Bathyarchaeia and hydrogenotrophic methanogens were enriched by the biochar addition. Meanwhile, the relative abundances of functional genes, including C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism, and pyruvate metabolism, were increased by 11.38-26.27%. The relative abundances of genes related to major amino acid metabolism, including histidine metabolism, lysine biosynthesis, and phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, were increased by 11.96-15.71%. Furthermore, the relative abundances of genes involved in major replication and repair were increased by 14.76-22.76%, and the major folding, sorting, degradation, and translation were increased by 14.47-19.95%, respectively. The relative abundances of genes related to major membrane transport and cell motility were increased by 10.02 and 83.09%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Pharmaceuticals, which are closely linked to human activities, have attracted global attention. This study investigated the occurrence characteristics of 20 pharmaceuticals in surface water of the Yangtze Estuary and adjacent sea. A total of 14 targeted pharmaceuticals were detected in both spring and summer sampling campaigns. The mean concentrations of sulfonamides and non-sulfonamides were 36.60 ± 19.43 ng·L-1 and 50.02 ± 41.07 ng·L-1, respectively. As for non-antibiotics, their concentrations were in the range of 24.34 ± 916.8 ng·L-1 with caffeine accounting for 6.17 ~ 86.70% (average percentage of 42.22%). Meanwhile, spatial distribution patterns showed similarities between antibiotics and non-antibiotics, with high levels occurring near the upper estuary, aquaculture areas, wastewater treatment plants, and the maximum turbidity zone. This phenomenon could be related to the sources of pharmaceuticals and the physicochemical properties of water bodies. Obviously, the first three areas are highly impacted by human activities or serve as important sources of terrestrial contaminants entering the East China Sea. The last area retains high amounts of suspended particles which may exert strong trapping effects on hydrophobic chemicals. Principal component analysis revealed the presence of three potential sources for pharmaceuticals in the Yangtze Estuary, with a relatively high percentage originating from incompletely treated municipal sewage. As for the temporal trend, pharmaceutical contamination was found to be higher in spring compared to summer, potentially due to variations in pharmaceutical consumption patterns, local rainfalls, and water temperatures. These findings provide fundamental data support for implementing appropriate local management strategies for pharmaceutical usages.

ABSTRACT

A nonparametric point-by-point (NPP) method is presented for high-accuracy measurement of the time-dependent frequency (laser frequency) in tunable laser absorption spectroscopy, crucial for ensuring ultimate measurement accuracy. In wavelength modulation spectroscopy in particular, the parametric methods in current use for time-dependent frequency measurement are insufficiently accurate and are difficult to apply to complex modulation scenarios. Based on a multi-scale viewpoint, point-by-point measurement of the frequency is realized by linear superposition of the frequency information mapped from the interferometric signal on a unit scale and on a local scale. Validation experiments indicate that the measurement accuracy of the proposed NPP method is three times that of the existing parametric methods, while effectively immunizing against non-ideal tuning effects. Additionally, the NPP method is suitable for use with arbitrarily complex modulations such as square wave modulation, for which parametric methods are inapplicable.
