BACKGROUND: To date, the clinical evidence regarding the effectiveness of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in restricting alveolar bone height and width change after extraction at periodontally compromised molar extraction sockets still remains controversial. This retrospective cohort study aims to evaluate the effect of ARP in molars extracted for periodontal reasons. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from patient electronic records from January 2019 to December 2023. Patients with Stage III/IV periodontitis who underwent extraction of molars for periodontal reasons were screened for eligibility. The outcomes included the horizontal and vertical dimensions of alveolar bone. The need for additional augmentation procedure during implantation was also evaluated. A linear regression model was used to adjust for known confounders. RESULTS: A total of 80 sockets were included in this study, of which 27 sockets received ARP therapy after extraction while 53 sockets experienced natural healing (NH). ARP resulted in significantly less bone height change in the periodontally compromised molar sites compared to the NH group (p < 0.001). In sockets displaying a height disparity of >2 mm between the buccal and palatal/lingual walls, the ARP group exhibited advantageous outcomes in terms of ridge width change, surpassing the NH group (p = 0.004). Moreover, the percentage for additional augmentation was significantly reduced in the ARP compared to the NH group (p = 0.006). Age, sex, smoking, jaw, location, and buccal wall thickness did not show any significant effect on bone height change. CONCLUSION: ARP had benefits on limiting ridge resorption subsequent to molar extraction for periodontal reasons.

Oxidative cross-coupling is a powerful strategy to form C-heteroatom bonds. However, oxidative cross-coupling for constructing C-S bond is still a challenge due to sulfur overoxidation and poisoning transition-metal catalysts. Now, electrochemical redox relay using sulfur radicals formed in situ from inorganic sulfur source offers a solution to this problem. Herein, electrochemical redox relay-induced C-S radical cross-coupling of quinoxalinones and ammonium thiocyanate with bromine anion as mediator is presented. The electrochemical redox relay comprised initially the formation of sulfur radical via indirect electrochemical oxidation, simultaneous electrochemical reduction of the imine bond, electro-oxidation-triggered radical coupling involving dearomatization-rearomatization, and the reformation of the imine bond through anodic oxidation. Applying this strategy, various quinoxalinones bearing multifarious electron-deficient/-rich substituents at different positions were well compatible with moderate to excellent yields and good steric hindrance compatibility under constant current conditions in an undivided cell without transition-metal catalysts and additional redox reagents. Synthetic applications of this methodology were demonstrated through gram-scale preparation and follow-up transformation. Notably, such a unique strategy may offer new opportunities for the development of new quinoxalinone-core leads.

Postexercise reduction in blood pressure, termed postexercise hypotension (PEH), is relevant for both acute and chronic health reasons and potentially for peripheral cardiovascular adaptations. We investigated the interactive effects of exercise intensity and recovery postures (seated, supine, and standing) on PEH. Thirteen normotensive men underwent a V̇o2max test on a cycle ergometer and five exhaustive constant load trials to determine critical power (CP) and the gas exchange threshold (GET). Subsequently, work-matched exercise trials were performed at two discrete exercise intensities (10% > CP and 10% < GET), with 1 h of recovery in each of the three postures. For both exercise intensities, standing posture resulted in a more substantial PEH (all P < 0.01). For both standing and seated recovery postures, the higher exercise intensity led to larger reductions in systolic [standing: -33 (11) vs. -21 (8) mmHg; seated: -34 (32) vs. -17 (37) mmHg, P < 0.01], diastolic [standing: -18 (7) vs. -8 (5) mmHg; seated: -10 (10) vs. -1 (4) mmHg, P < 0.01], and mean arterial pressures [-13 (8) vs. -2 (4) mmHg, P < 0.01], whereas in the supine recovery posture, the reduction in diastolic [-9 (9) vs. -4 (3) mmHg, P = 0.08) and mean arterial pressures [-7 (5) vs. -3 (4) mmHg, P = 0.06] was not consistently affected by prior exercise intensity. PEH is more pronounced during recovery from exercise performed above CP versus below GET. However, the effect of exercise intensity on PEH is largely abolished when recovery is performed in the supine posture.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The magnitude of postexercise hypotension is greater following the intensity above the critical power in a standing position.

BACKGROUND: We report on the case of a 21-year-old female who could not walk due to a huge Bartholin's cyst occupying the right vulvar region. The patient was treated by marsupialization of the Bartholin's cyst and postoperative antibiotic therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 21-year-old female without a medical history of sexually transmitted diseases presented to our outpatient clinic with complaints of a painful vulvar lump and a green-yellowish discharge for 4 d. A large Bartholin's cyst, 10 cm in diameter, was suspected over the right side of the vulva. She was advised to be admitted to the ward for intravenous antibiotic treatment and to perform marsupialization several days later. However, the patient requested immediate surgery because of time limitations. The patient underwent marsupialization under local anesthesia. The procedure was well-tolerated. After making the incision, a significant amount of malodorous pus (approximately 30 mL) was removed from the abscess. The patient was followed up for 1 wk postoperatively. The Bartholin's cyst regressed, and the surgical wound healed well. CONCLUSION: Our case shows that an initial marsupialization followed by oral antibiotic therapy can be an appropriate treatment option for a large Bartholin's cyst. However, depending on the patient's condition, a suitable treatment, either cystectomy or marsupialization, can be considered.

The effect of different exercise intensities on the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension has not been rigorously clarified with respect to the metabolic thresholds that partition discrete exercise intensity domains (i.e., critical power and the gas exchange threshold (GET)). We hypothesized that the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension would be greater following isocaloric exercise performed above versus below critical power. Twelve non-hypertensive men completed a ramp incremental exercise test to determine maximal oxygen uptake and the GET, followed by five exhaustive constant load trials to determine critical power and W' (work available above critical power). Subsequently, criterion trials were performed at four discrete intensities matched for total work performed (i.e., isocaloric) to determine the impact of exercise intensity on post-exercise hypotension: 10% above critical power (10% > CP), 10% below critical power (10% < CP), 10% above GET (10% > GET) and 10% below GET (10% < GET). The post-exercise decrease (i.e., the minimum post-exercise values) in mean arterial (10% > CP: -12.7 ± 8.3 vs. 10% < CP: v3.5 ± 2.9 mmHg), diastolic (10% > CP: -9.6 ± 9.8 vs. 10% < CP: -1.4 ± 5.0 mmHg) and systolic (10% > CP: -23.8 ± 7.0 vs. 10% < CP: -9.9 ± 4.3 mmHg) blood pressures were greater following exercise performed 10% > CP compared to all other trials (all P < 0.01). No effects of exercise intensity on the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension were observed during exercise performed below critical power (all P > 0.05). Critical power represents a threshold above which the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension is greatly augmented. NEW FINDINGS: What is the central questions of this study? What is the influence of exercise intensity on the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension with respect to metabolic thresholds? What is the main finding and its importance? The magnitude of post-exercise hypotension is greatly increased following exercise performed above critical power. However, below critical power, there was no clear effect of exercise intensity on the magnitude of post-exercise hypotension.

The C2 sulfonylation of quinoxalinones via a metal-free oxidative S-O cross-coupling strategy for synthesizing 2-sulfonyloxylated quinoxalines is established. It effectively solved the long-standing problems in the C2 transformation of quinoxalinones via a metal-free oxidative O-S coupling strategy. Compared with the traditional C2 transformed quinoxalinones-C2 chlorination method, this protocol is mild, facile, and environmentally friendly and exhibits good atomic economy and excellent functional group tolerance. Moreover, the utility of this methodology and the sulfonyloxyl handles was demonstrated through the synthesis of 2-substituted quinoxaline-based bioactive molecules.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effects of tea polyphenols (TP) on inflammation of orbital fibroblasts in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) and to provide new ideas for GO treatment. METHODS: Primary orbital fibroblasts were extracted from orbital adipose/connective tissues of patients with and without GO. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the expression of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1ß, and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 in non-GO and GO orbital fibroblasts. The CCK-8 assay was used to determine the appropriate concentration of TP for subsequent experiments. RT-qPCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed to investigate the effects of TP on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of inflammatory cytokines. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) expression was measured using Western blotting analysis. NOD-like receptor 3 (NLRP3) expression was detected using both Western blotting analysis and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS: The mRNA levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, and MCP-1 in GO orbital fibroblasts were significantly higher than those in non-GO cells. TP treatment significantly inhibited LPS-induced production of inflammatory factors, including IL-6, IL-1ß, and MCP-1. TP also inhibited the expression levels of NF-κB and NLRP3. Inflammation in the GO orbital fibroblasts was higher than that in non-GO cells. TP inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines in GO orbital fibroblasts in vitro through the NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that TP may have a potential role in GO treatment.

BACKGROUND: In the postpandemic era, wearing protective masks in public places will still be an important means of blocking popular viruses in the future. The purpose of this study was to explore whether sports performance was affected by mask wearing and exercise duration during 15-min treadmill running at a speed of 75% maximal aerobic speed. METHODS: Thirty-six males were randomly divided into mask and nonmask groups. The kinematic and kinetic data were obtained at four time points (RN0-1 min, RN5-6 min, RN9-10 min, and RN14-15 min) during running. Two-way mixed ANOVA was applied to examine the effects between groups and times with Bonferroni post hoc comparison and independent samples t-test. RESULTS: The results showed that there was no difference between mask and nonmask group during running (p > 0.05). As running time increased, hip joint ROM, hip joint flexion/extension max, and ankle joint plantarflexion max angles increased; knee joint flexion min and ankle joint dorsiflexion max angles decreased; average peak vertical ground reaction forces (PVGRF) increased after 9 min-running (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Wearing a medical protective mask does not affect the joint angle and touchdown PVGRF of lower extremities during treadmill running while affected by running time and changed after 9 min-treadmill running. Future studies will examine the effects of wearing masks during the pandemic on muscle activation and blood biochemical values during exercise. Toxocariasis, mainly caused by Toxocara canis, and to a lesser extent, Toxocara cati, is a neglected parasitic zoonosis. The mechanisms that underlie the changes in lipid metabolism of T. canis infection in Beagle dogs' lungs remain unclear. Lipidomics is a rapidly emerging approach that enables the global profiling of lipid composition by mass spectrometry. In this study, we performed a non-targeted lipidomic analysis of the lungs of Beagle dogs infected with the roundworm T. canis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). A total of 1197 lipid species were identified, of which 63, 88, and 157 lipid species were significantly altered at 24 h post-infection (hpi), 96 hpi, and 36 days post-infection (dpi), respectively. This global lipidomic profiling identified infection-specific lipid signatures for lung toxocariasis, and represented a comprehensive comparison between the lipid composition of dogs' lungs in the presence and absence of T. canis infection. The potential roles of the identified lipid species in the pathogenesis of T. canis are discussed, which has important implications for better understanding the interaction mechanism between T. canis and the host lung.

Toxocara canis is an unnoticed zoonotic helminth that causes severe disease in animals and humans. The spleen has a wide range of immunological functions in protecting the host against infection by many pathogens, but the function of the spleen in T. canis infection is still to be clarified, especially for the role of spleen microRNAs (miRNAs). In this study, deep sequencing of spleen RNA samples of 18 Beagle puppies was conducted to uncover the miRNAs expression profiling at 24 h post-infection (hpi), 96 hpi, and 36 days post infection (dpi). A total of 20, 34, and 19 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) were identified at 24 hpi, 96 hpi, and 36 dpi, respectively. These DEmiRNAs (e.g., cfa-miR-206, cfa-miR-331, and cfa-miR-339) could play critical roles in Beagle puppies against T. canis infection, such as influencing inflammatory and immune-related cells and cytokines, by regulating target genes that are tightly associated with host immune function and enriched in immune response and immune pathways based on GO annotation and KEGG enrichment analysis. The current study discovered marked alterations of spleen miRNAs after T. canis infection, with potential effects on the pathogenesis of toxocariasis.

An efficient emotion recognition model is an important research branch in electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces. However, the input of the emotion recognition model is often a whole set of EEG channels obtained by electrodes placed on subjects. The unnecessary information produced by redundant channels affects the recognition rate and depletes computing resources, thereby hindering the practical applications of emotion recognition. In this work, we aim to optimize the input of EEG channels using a visibility graph (VG) and genetic algorithm-based convolutional neural network (GA-CNN). First, we design an experiment to evoke three types of emotion states using movies and collect the multi-channel EEG signals of each subject under different emotion states. Then, we construct VGs for each EEG channel and derive nonlinear features representing each EEG channel. We employ the genetic algorithm (GA) to find the optimal subset of EEG channels for emotion recognition and use the recognition results of the CNN as fitness values. The experimental results show that the recognition performance of the proposed method using a subset of EEG channels is superior to that of the CNN using all channels for each subject. Last, based on the subset of EEG channels searched by the GA-CNN, we perform cross-subject emotion recognition tasks employing leave-one-subject-out cross-validation. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in recognizing emotion states using fewer EEG channels and further enrich the methods of EEG classification using nonlinear features.

A global lipidomic analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was performed on the liver of beagle dogs infected with Toxocara canis to profile hepatic lipid species at 12 h post-infection (hpi), 24 hpi, and 36 days post-infection (dpi). This analysis identified six categories and 42 subclasses of lipids, including 173, 64, and 116 differentially abundant lipid species at 12 hpi, 24 hpi, and 36 dpi, respectively. Many of the identified lysophospholipids, such as lysophosphatidylglycerol, lysophosphatidylserine, and lysophosphatidylcholine, may contribute to the migration and development of T. canis during the early infection stage. Pathway analysis revealed significant alterations of several immune-inflammatory pathways, such as the B-cell receptor signaling pathway, the NF-kappa B signaling pathway, and the C-type lectin receptor signaling pathway at 12 and 24 hpi. These findings demonstrate the value of lipidomic profiling in revealing the extent of changes in the composition and abundance of hepatic lipidome caused by T. canis infection and their relevance to the pathophysiology of toxocariasis in beagle dogs.

BACKGROUND: Toxocara canis is a cosmopolitan parasite with a significant adverse impact on the health of humans and animals. The spleen is a major immune organ that plays essential roles in protecting the host against various infections. However, its role in T. canis infection has not received much attention. METHODS: We performed sequencing-based transcriptome profiling of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in the spleen of Beagle puppies at 24 h post-infection (hpi), 96 hpi and 36 days post-infection (dpi). Deep sequencing of RNAs isolated from the spleen of six puppies (three infected and three control) at each time point after infection was conducted. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed 614 differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs and 262 DEmRNAs at 24 hpi; 726 DElncRNAs and 878 DEmRNAs at 96 hpi; and 686 DElncRNAs and 504 DEmRNAs at 36 dpi. Of those, 35 DElncRNA transcripts and 11 DEmRNAs were detected at all three time points post-infection. Many DE genes were enriched in immune response, such as ifit1, ifit2 and rorc. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis revealed that some genes (e.g. prkx and tnfrsf11a) were involved in the T cell receptor signaling pathway, calcium signaling pathway, Ras signaling pathway and NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show marked alterations in the expression profiles of spleen lncRNAs and mRNAs, with possible implications in the pathophysiology of toxocariasis.

Toxocara canis is a neglected zoonotic roundworm distributed all over the world, causing toxocariasis in humans and animals. However, so far, the immune mechanism of T. canis infection in definitive hosts remains to be clarified. In this study, the transcriptional alterations of Beagle dogs' peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) induced by T. canis infection during the lung infection period were analyzed using RNA-seq technology. A total of 2142 differentially expressed genes were identified, with 1066 upregulated genes and 1076 downregulated genes. Many differentially expressed genes participated in the biological process of intracellular signal transduction, as well as the immune- or inflammation-related KEGG signaling pathway, such as the Notch signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, and NF-kappa B signaling pathway, through KEGG enrichment analysis. This study indicated that T. canis infection could suppress the biological function of Beagle dogs' PMBCs and provided basic data to further clarify the interaction mechanism between T. canis and host immune cells.

Industry 4.0 has been a hot topic in recent years. The process of integrating Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, will become the trend in future construction of smart factories. In the past, smart factories were developed around the concept of the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). Most parts of the quality management process still needed to be implemented by Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) methods which required human resources and time to perform second stage testing. Screening standards also resulted in the elimination of about 30% of the products. In this study, we sort and analyze several Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN) and YOLO models that are currently more advanced and widely used, analyze the methods and development problems of the various models, and propose a suitable real-time image recognition model and architecture suitable for Integrated Circuit Board (ICB) in manufacturing process. The goal of the first stage of this study is to collect and use different types of ICBs as model training data sets, and establish a preliminary image recognition model that can classify and predict different types of ICBs based on different feature points. The second stage explores image augmentation fusion and optimization methods. The data augmentation method used in this study can reach an average accuracy of 96.53%. In the final stage, there is discussion of the applicability of the model to detect and recognize the ICB directionality in <1 s with a 98% accuracy rate to meet the real-time requirements of smart manufacturing. Accurate and instant object image recognition in the smart manufacturing process can save manpower required for testing, improve equipment effectiveness, and increase both the production capacity and the yield rate of the production line. The proposed model improves the overall manufacturing process.

AIM: To update and investigate the clinical outcomes and complications between femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phacoemulsification cataract surgery (CPCS). METHODS: A Meta-analysis was performed using databases, including Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane library. At least one of the clinical outcomes and/or complications data in each included randomized controlled trials (RCT) was reported. The quality of the RCT was assessed with the Cochrane risk assessments tool. RESULTS: Overall, 25 RCTs including 3781 eyes were included. No statistically significant difference detected between FLACS and CPCS in terms of corrected distant visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at the long-term follow up, although FLACS showed better CDVA at 1wk postoperatively, and less increase in CCT at 1d and 1wk. FLACS had better postoperative endothelial cell count (ECC) at 1 and 4-6wk, while there was no significantly difference between FLACS and CPCS at 1d, 3 and 6mo [weighted mean difference (WMD): 51.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): -5.46 to 108.54, P=0.08; WMD: 48.52, 95%CI: -17.54 to 114.58, P=0.15; WMD: 12.17, 95%CI: -48.61 to 72.94, P=0.69, respectively]. Postoperative endothelial cell loss (ECL) of the FLACS was significantly lower than that of the CPCS at 1, 4-6wk, and 3mo (P=0.02, 0.008, 0.03, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between two groups at 6mo (WMD: -30.36, 95%CI: -78.84 to 18.12, P=0.22). No significant difference was discovered with respect to the macular edema [odds ratio (OR): 0.93, 95%CI: 0.42 to 2.05, P=0.85], capsular complication excluding posterior capsular tears (OR: 0.79, 95%CI: 0.42 to 1.50, P=0.47) and intraocular pressure change (OR: 0.82, 95%CI: 0.39 to 1.72, P=0.60). However, posterior capsular tears were more common in CPCS group (OR: 0.12, 95%CI: 0.01 to 0.98, P=0.05). The effective phacoemulsification times were significantly lower in the FLACS group compared to the CPCS group (WMD: -0.78, 95%CI: -1.23 to -0.34, P=0.0006). CONCLUSION: No statistically significant difference is discovered between FLACS and CPCS in clinical outcomes at the long-term follow up. BACKGROUND: Metabolic memory is important for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in the early stage, and in maintaining blood glucose concentrations within the normal range. The clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is currently made using fasting plasma glucose, 2 h-plasma glucose (2h-PG) during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level. However, the fasting plasma glucose test requires fasting, which is a barrier to screening, and reproducibility of the 2h-PG level is poor. HbA1c is affected by a shortened red blood cell lifespan. In patients with anemia and hemoglobinopathies, the measured HbA1c levels may be inaccurate. Compared with HbA1c, glycated albumin (GA) is characterized by more rapid and greater changes, and can be used to diagnose new-onset diabetes especially if urgent early treatment is required, for example in gestational diabetes. In this study, we provided cutoff values for GA and evaluated its utility as a screening and diagnostic tool for diabetes in a large high-risk group study. AIM: To evaluate the utility of GA in identifying subjects with diabetes in northeast China, and to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the proposed GA cutoff in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1935 subjects, with suspected diabetes or in high-risk groups, from 2014 to 2015 in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University (Harbin, China). The use of GA to identify diabetes was investigated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The GA cutoffs were derived from different 2h-PG values with hemoglobin A1c cutoffs used as a calibration curve. RESULTS: The GA cutoff for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was 15.15% from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. ROC analysis demonstrated that GA was an efficient marker for detecting diabetes, with an AUC of 90.3%. CONCLUSION: Our study supports the use of GA as a biomarker for the diagnosis of diabetes.

Noble metal-based catalytic material with maximum utilization is of prime attraction for conserving rare metal resources. Herein, highly dispersion Ni nanoparticles (NPs)-modified N-doped mesoporous carbon material (Ni-N@C) was fabricated by pyrolysis of Ni2+/Histidine cross-linked alginate hydrogels. In a step forward, the obtained Ni-N@C nanocatalyst was treated by the solution of Pd2+, and tiny amount of Pd NPs were deposited on the surface of Ni via the reducibility of Ni to achieve the high dispersion of precious metals material. In the degradation of highly-concentration p-nitrophenol, the catalyst presents excellent performance which could completely degrade pollutants within a very short period. It was demonstrated that pre-embedded Ni NPs could not only increase the efficiency of Pd NPs but also endow the facile separation characteristic to the catalyst. Besides, the catalyst maintained favorable catalytic capacity even after five reaction cycles. In brief, this work may provide novel guidance for the maximum utilization of noble metal-modified mesoporous N-doped carbon-supported catalysts in practical applications of industrial and the treatment highly-concentration p-nitrophenol.
