ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nutritional assessment tools are used to predict outcomes in cancer. However, their utility in patients undergoing spinal surgery is unclear. This review examined if prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT), and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) can predict adverse events after spinal surgeries. METHODS: PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Embase were screened by two reviewers for relevant studies up to 26th January 2024. The primary outcome of interest was total adverse events after spinal surgery. Secondary outcomes were surgical site infections (SSI) and mortality. RESULTS: 14 studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that while reduced PNI was not associated with an increased risk of SSI there was a significant association between PNI and higher risk of adverse events. Meta-analysis showed that high CONUT was not associated with an increased risk of complications after spinal surgeries. Pooled analysis showed that low GNRI was associated with an increased risk of both SSI and adverse events. Data on mortality was scarce. CONCLUSIONS: The PNI and GNRI can predict adverse outcomes after spinal surgeries. Limited data shows that high CONUT is also associated with a non-significant increased risk of adverse outcomes. High GNRI was predictive of an increased risk of SSI. Data on mortality is too scarce for strong conclusions.

ABSTRACT

Hordeum californicum (H. californicum, 2n=2X=14, HcHc), one of the wild relatives of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), harbors many desirable genes and is a potential genetic resource for wheat improvement. In this study, an elite line ND646 was selected from a BC4F5 population, which was developed using 60Co-γ irradiated wheat-H. californicum disomic addition line WJ28-1 (DA6Hc) as the donor parent and Ningchun 4 as the recurrent parent. ND646 was identified as a novel wheat-H. californicum 6HcS/6BL translocation line using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and H. californicum-specific expressed sequence tag (EST) markers. Further evaluation revealed that ND646 had excellent performance in several traits, such as a higher sedimentation value (SV), higher water absorption rate (WAR), and higher hardness index (HI). More importantly, it had more kernels per spike (KPS), a higher grain yields (GY), and good resistance to powdery mildew, leaf rust, and 2,4-D butylate (2,4-D). Its excellent phenotypic performance laid the foundation for further investigation of its genetic architecture and makes ND646 a useful germplasm resource for wheat breeding.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that long-stranded non-coding RNA (LncRNA) can predict coronary artery restenosis in patients suffering from coronary heart disease after percutaneous coronary intervention, suggesting that LncRNA may become a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of coronary artery restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. However, its accuracy has not been systematically evaluated. Therefore, it is necessary to perform meta-analysis to certify the diagnostic value of LncRNA on coronary artery restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies to explore the potential diagnostic values of LncRNA on coronary artery restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention from inception to December 2020. Data were extracted by two experienced researchers independently. The risk of bias about the meta-analysis was confirmed by the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2). Data was synthesized and heterogeneity was investigated as well. All of the above statistical analysis was carried out with Stata 14.0. RESULTS: This study proved the pooled diagnostic performance of LncRNA on coronary artery restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. CONCLUSION: This study clarified confusions about the specificity and sensitivity of LncRNA on coronary artery restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention, thus further guiding their promotion and application. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required for this study. The systematic review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal, presented at conferences, and shared on social media platforms. This review would be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal or conference presentations. OSF REGISTRATION NUMBER: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/4QT2P.

ABSTRACT

A rapid analysis method based on ultraviolet-visual(UV-Vis) spectroscopy, near infrared(NIR) spectroscopy and multivariable data analysis was established for quality evaluation of Shengxuebao Mixture. The contents of eight active ingredients of Shengxuebao Mixture including albiflorin, paeoniflorin, 2, 3, 5, 4'-tetra-hydroxy-stilbene-2-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside, specnuezhenide, ecliptasaponin D, emodin, calycosin-7-glucoside and astragaloside Ⅳ were simultaneously detected by using this method. HPLC-UV-MS was used as a reference method for determining the contents of these ingredients. Partial least squares(PLS) analysis was implemented as a linear method for multivariate models calibrated between UV spectrum/NIR spectrum and contents of 8 ingredients. Finally, the performance of the model was evaluated by 24 batches of test samples. The results showed that both UV-Vis and NIR models gave a good calibration ability with an R~2 value above 0.9, and the prediction ability was also satisfactory, with an R~2 value higher than 0.83 for UV-Vis model and higher than 0.79 for NIR model. The overall results demonstrate that the established method is accurate, robust and fast, therefore, it can be used for rapid quality evaluation of Shengxuebao Mixture.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) is an established method of detecting myocardial ischemia. Its diagnostic accuracy solely depends on wall motion assessment. Clear visibility of the left ventricular endocardium is essential for reliable assessment of a wall motion abnormality. However, incremental benefits of contrast DSE for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) have not been demonstrated in overweight or obese patients. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to test the incremental benefits of contrast DSE in detecting CAD in overweight or obese patients. METHODS: Sixty-two overweight or obese patients (body mass index 26 kg/m(2) to 33 kg/m(2)) underwent DSE with or without contrast and coronary angiography. Contrast-enhanced images were achieved at rest and during peak DSE after administration of SonoVue (Bracco Diagnostics Inc, Italy) or Optison (Mallinckrodt, USA). The endocardial border resolution for each myocardial segment was graded as 0, 1 or 2. A total of 992 segments from 62 subjects were analyzed. The results of DSE with or without contrast were compared with the findings on angiography. RESULTS: The differences in the score grading between the two groups with or without contrast, at rest and during peak DSE were statistically significant (P<0.001). The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of contrast DSE in detecting CAD, compared with the studies without contrast, were improved (82% versus 70%, 78% versus 67% and 81% versus 69%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: SonoVue and Optison can enhance left ventricular endocardial border delineation in overweight or obese patients, optimizing the evaluation of wall motion both at rest and during peak stress. This increases the diagnostic value of DSE in detecting CAD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Genotype-phenotype studies have suggested that some mutations of genes encoding various components of the cardiac sarcomere cause hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and are associated with the prognosis of patients with HCM. The aims of this study were to investigate the gene mutations of exons in the cardiac beta myosin heavy chain (MYH7) gene, the troponin T (TNNT2) gene, and the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) gene, as well as to assess the effect of these mutations on the clinical features of Chinese patients with HCM. METHODS: Five unrelated Chinese families with HCM were studied. Exons 3 and 18 in the MYH7 gene, exon 9 in the TNNT2 gene, and all three exons in the BNP gene were screened with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for genomic DNA amplification. Further study included purification of PCR products and direct sequencing of PCR fragments by fluorescent end labeling. RESULTS: A C-to-T transition in codon 26 of exon 3 in the MYH7 gene was found in one family (including four patients and five carriers), resulting in an amino acid substitution of valine (Val) for alanine (Ala). The Ala26Val mutation was of incomplete dominance (penetrance 44%). This mutation was not seen in the other four families or in the control group. Moreover, the association between the gene mutations of exon 18 in MYH7, of exon 9 of TNNT2, and of all three exons in BNP and HCM was not found in the populations we studied. CONCLUSIONS: The missense mutation Ala26Val found in this one Chinese family was associated with a mild phenotype of HCM. The genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of HCM exists in the Chinese population. It suggests that genetic and environmental factors may be involved in the pathogenesis of HCM.
