BACKGROUND: The citrus red mite, Panonychus citri is a serious pest of the citrus industry and has developed resistance to many acaricides. Broflanilide is a novel meta-diamide insecticide that binds to a new site on the γ -aminobutyric acid receptor with high potency against pests. However, little information has been reported about its effect on the citrus red mite. RESULTS: Broflanilide exhibited higher toxicity to female adults and eggs of a laboratory strain of P. citri The median lethal concentration (LC50), 9.769 mg/L and 4.576 mg/L, respectively) than other commonly used acaricides and was also toxic to two P. citri field strains. Broflanilide treatment with LC10, LC20, and LC30 significantly decreased the fecundity and longevity of female adults of F0 P. citri compared with the control. The duration of larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult, and total life span in the F1 generation were significantly reduced after treatment of F0 with broflanilide. Population parameters, including the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (λ), were significantly increased, and the mean generation time (T) of F1 progeny was significantly reduced in the LC20 treatment. The predicted population size of F1 increased when parental female adults were treated with sublethal concentrations. CONCLUSION: Broflanilide had high acaricidal activity toward P. citri, and exposure to a sublethal concentration significantly inhibited the population growth of F0. The transgenerational hormesis effect is likely to cause population expansion of F1. More attention should be paid when broflanilide is applied to control P. citri in citrus orchards. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the role of making choices as an internal motivator to improve performance, and recent studies in the domain of memory have focused on adults. To chart the developmental trend of the choice effect on memory, we conducted a series of seven experiments involving children, adolescents, and young adults. Participants (N = 512) aged 5 to 26 years performed a choice encoding task that manipulated the opportunities to choose and then took a memory test. Using different types of experimental materials and corroborated by a mini meta-analysis, we found that the choice effect on memory was significant in childhood and early adolescence but not significant in late adolescence and early adulthood. The developmental changes were statistically significant, particularly evident during the transition from early to late adolescence. These findings suggest that the internal value of choice decreases across development and contributes to our understanding of developmental differences in the role of choice in memory.

In magnetic resonance examination, the interaction between implants and the radio frequency (RF) fields induces heating in human tissue and may cause tissue damage. To assess the RF-induced heating of implants, three steps should be executed, including electromagnetic model construction, electromagnetic model validation, and virtual human body simulations. The crucial step of assessing RF-induced heating involves the construction of a test environment for electromagnetic model validation. In this study, a hardware environment, comprised of a RF generation system, electromagnetic field measurement system, and a robotic arm positioning system, was established. Furthermore, an automated control software environment was developed using a Python-based software development platform to enable the creation of a high-precision automated integrated test environment. The results indicate that the electric field generated in this test environment aligns well with the simulated electric field, making it suitable for assessing the RF-induced heating effects of implants.

Immunotherapy, in the shape of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), has completely changed the treatment of cancer. However, the increasing expense of treatment and the frequency of immune-related side effects, which are frequently associated with combination antibody therapies and Fc fragment of antibody, have limited the patient's ability to benefit from these treatments. Herein, we presented the therapeutic effects of the plasmid-encoded PD-1 and CTLA-4 scFvs (single-chain variable fragment) for melanoma via an optimized intramuscular gene delivery system. After a single injection, the plasmid-encoded ICI scFv in mouse sera continued to be above 150 ng/mL for 3 weeks and reached peak amounts of 600 ng/mL. Intramuscular delivery of plasmid encoding PD-1 and CTLA-4 scFvs significantly changed the tumor microenvironment, delayed tumor growth, and prolonged survival in melanoma-bearing mice. Furthermore, no significant toxicity was observed, suggesting that this approach could improve the biosafety of ICIs combination therapy. Overall, the expression of ICI scFvs in vivo using intramuscular plasmid delivery could potentially develop into a reliable, affordable, and safe immunotherapy technique, expanding the range of antibody-based gene therapy systems that are available.

A pair of water-stable and highly porous homochiral fluorescent silver-organic framework enantiomers, namely, R-Ag-BPA-TPyPE (R-1) and S-Ag-BPA-TPyPE (S-1), had been prepared as enantioselective fluorescence sensors. Combining homochiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogen phosphate (BPA) with an AIE-based ligand tetrakis[4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]ethene (TPyPE) in complexes R-1 and S-1 made them possess favorable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, and their CPL spectra were almost mirror images of each other. The luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) are ±2.2 × 10-3 for R-1 and S-1, and the absolute fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFs) are 32.0% for R-1 and S-1, respectively. Complex R-1 could enantioselectively recognize two enantiomers of amino acids in water or DMF with high Stern-Volmer constants of 236-573 M-1 and enantioselectivity ratios of 1.40-1.78.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of massage for postoperative rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). DATA SOURCES: The PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were systematically searched from inception to May 2024. STUDY SELECTION: Any randomized controlled trials on the use of massage for postoperative TKA rehabilitation were included. DATA EXTRACTION: A meta-analysis of outcomes, including postoperative pain, knee range of motion (ROM), postoperative D-dimer levels, and length of hospital stay, was performed. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool was used to assess the risk of bias, and the data for each included study were extracted independently by two researchers. DATA SYNTHESIS: Eleven randomized controlled clinical trials with 940 subjects were included. The results showed that compared with the control group, the massage group experienced more significant pain relief on the 7th, 14th and 21st days after the operation. Moreover, the improvement in knee ROM was more pronounced on postoperative days 7 and 14. In addition, the massage group reported fewer adverse events. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction in postoperative D-dimer levels between the patients and controls. Subgroup analysis revealed that massage shortened the length of hospital stay for postoperative patients in China but not significantly for patients in other regions. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of the studies was large. CONCLUSIONS: Increased massage treatment was more effective at alleviating pain and improving knee ROM in early post-TKA patients. However, massage did not perform better in reducing D-dimer levels in patients after TKA. Based on the current evidence, massage can be used as an adjunctive treatment for rehabilitation after TKA.

Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects millions in China and imposes a considerable economic burden on hospitalized patients who experience exacerbations. Nebulized short-acting beta-2 agonists (SABA) are recommended as initial therapy for exacerbation patients, but the optimal SABA remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different SABAs, such as albuterol and levalbuterol, on the length of stay (LOS) and direct medical costs among hospitalized patients diagnosed with COPD. Methods This retrospective cohort study uses linked hospital administrative data from three hospitals in Chongqing. Patients with COPD, aged 40 years and older, who had been continuously treated with nebulized albuterol or levalbuterol during hospitalization, were eligible for the study. Patients were matched 1:1 by sex, age, and severity according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) grades 1-4. Patients were grouped according to the different SABA treatments they received. Demographic, economic, and clinical data were retrieved. LOS and direct healthcare costs were assessed. Results A total of 158 COPD patients were included, with 79 in each treatment group. Patients treated with levalbuterol had a significantly shorter median LOS (7.0 days vs. 8.0 days, P=0.003) and fewer direct healthcare median costs (total cost: ¥8,868.3 vs. ¥10,290.7, P=0.014; COPD-related western medicine fees: ¥383.8 vs. ¥505.3). Patients aged 60 or older were more likely to experience longer LOS and higher direct costs. Conclusion This retrospective cohort analysis supports that albuterol was associated with longer LOS and higher costs than levalbuterol.

This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the oscillation phenomenon occurring in multi-chip parallel automotive-grade power modules under short-circuit conditions and investigates three suppression methods. We tested and analyzed two commercial automotive-grade power modules, one containing two chips and the other containing a single chip, and found that short-circuit gate oscillations were more likely to occur in multi-chip parallel packaged modules than in single-chip packaged modules. Through experimental and simulation analyses, we observed that gate oscillations were mainly caused by the interaction between internal parasitic parameters of the module and the external drive circuit, and we found that high drive resistance and low common emitter inductance between parallel chips could effectively suppress gate voltage oscillations. We also analyzed the two mainstream suppression schemes, increasing the drive gate resistance and placing the drive capacitors in parallel. Unfortunately, we found that these suppression schemes were not ideal solutions because both schemes changed the switching characteristics of the power module. As an alternative, we propose a simple and effective solution that involves adding parallel connections between the parallel chips. Simulation calculations showed that this optimized method reduced the emitter inductance between parallel chips in the upper bridge arm by about 30% and in the lower bridge arm by 35%. Through short-circuit experiments conducted at different DC bus voltages, it has been verified that the new optimized solution effectively resolves gate oscillation issues without affecting the switching characteristics of the power module.

Ultra-high-field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) stands as a pivotal cornerstone in biomedical imaging, yet the challenge of false imaging persists, constraining its full potential. Despite the development of dual-mode contrast agents improving conventional MRI, their effectiveness in UHF remains suboptimal due to the high magnetic moment, resulting in diminished T1 relaxivity and excessively enhanced T2 relaxivity. Herein, we report a DNA-mediated magnetic-dimer assembly (DMA) of iron oxide nanoparticles that harnesses UHF-tailored nanomagnetism for fault-free UHF-MRI. DMA exhibits a dually enhanced longitudinal relaxivity of 4.42 mM-1·s-1 and transverse relaxivity of 26.23 mM-1·s-1 at 9 T, demonstrating a typical T1-T2 dual-mode UHF-MRI contrast agent. Importantly, DMA leverages T1-T2 dual-modality image fusion to achieve artifact-free breast cancer visualization, effectively filtering interference from hundred-micrometer-level false-positive signals with unprecedented precision. The UHF-tailored T1-T2 dual-mode DMA contrast agents hold promise for elevating the accuracy of MR imaging in disease diagnosis.

Bimetallic iron-noble metal alloy nanoparticles have emerged as promising contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to their biocompatibility and facile control over the element distribution. However, the inherent surface energy discrepancy between iron and noble metal often leads to Fe atom segregation within the nanoparticle, resulting in limited iron-water molecule interactions and, consequently, diminished relaxometric performance. In this study, we present the development of a class of ligand-induced atomically segregation-tunable alloy nanoprobes (STAN) composed of bimetallic iron-gold nanoparticles. By manipulating the oxidation state of Fe on the particle surface through varying molar ratios of oleic acid and oleylamine ligands, we successfully achieve surface Fe enrichment. Under the application of a 9 T MRI system, the optimized STAN formulation, characterized by a surface Fe content of 60.1 at %, exhibits an impressive r1 value of 2.28 mM-1·s-1, along with a low r2/r1 ratio of 6.2. This exceptional performance allows for the clear visualization of hepatic tumors as small as 0.7 mm in diameter in vivo, highlighting the immense potential of STAN as a next-generation contrast agent for highly sensitive MR imaging.

In mammals, CD4 is found to be expressed on T cells and innate immune cells, however, teleost cells bearing CD4 have not been well identified and characterized. In this study, we identified two different CD4-1+ cell subsets in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella): CD4-1+ lymphocytes (Lym) and CD4-1+ myeloid cells (Mye), both of which had the highest proportions in the head kidney. The mRNA expression analysis showed that CD4-1, CD4-2, TCRß, CD3γ/δ, and LCK1 are highly expressed in CD4-1+ Lym and also expressed in CD4-1+ Mye. Furthermore, we found that CD4-1+ Lym have a Lym morphology and highly express T-cell cytokines, suggesting that they are CD4+ T cells equivalent to mammalian Th cells. On the other hand, CD4-1+ Mye were found to have a morphology of macrophage and highly express macrophage marker gene MCSFR, indicating that they are macrophages. In addition, functional analysis revealed that CD4-1+ Mye possess phagocytic ability and great antigen-processing ability. Taken together, our study sheds further light on the composition and function of CD4+ cells in teleost fish.

BACKGROUND: High perforation risk hinders the widespread adoption of ESD for colorectal neoplasms. This study was performed to determine the risk factors of colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)-induced perforation and develop a predictive model. METHODS: A total of 1046 colorectal neoplasms in 1011 patients were retrospectively enrolled from January 2011 to December 2021, in a single tertiary center as the derivation cohort. We identified independent risk factors for perforation using univariate analysis and multi-variate logistic regression. A nomogram was developed based on the logistic regression model and prospectively applied to 266 colorectal neoplasms as the validation cohort. The performance of the predictive model was evaluated with the receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: Independent pre-operative factors for colorectal ESD-induced perforation were tumor located in the left colon [odds ratio (OR) 2.39, P = 0.040], size ≥ 40 mm (OR 3.36, P < 0.001), ≥2/3 circumference (OR 7.55, P = 0.004), located across folds (OR 6.26, P < 0.001), and laterally spreading tumor (non-granular type, OR 2.34, P = 0.029; granular type, OR 2.46, P = 0.021). The nomogram model incorporating the pre-operative factors performed well in both the derivation and validation cohorts (areas under the curve of 0.750 and 0.806, respectively). Decision curve analysis demonstrated that the clinical benefit of the nomogram was favorable. CONCLUSIONS: The novel nomogram, developed and prospectively validated, incorporating tumor size, location, and morphology can successfully predict perforation during ESD for colorectal neoplasms.

Background: Although percutaneous osteoplasty (POP) has been widely accepted and is now being performed for the treatment of painful bone metastases outside the spine. It is emerging as one of the most promising procedures for patients with painful bone metastasis who are unsuitable for surgery or who show resistance to radiotherapy and/or analgesic therapies. However, there are only scarce reports regarding osteoplasty in painful sternal metastases. Subjects and Method: We report four patients with sternal metastases suffered with severe pain of anterior chest wall. The original tumors included lung cancer and thyroid cancer. For the initially pain medication failing, all the four patients received POP procedure under fluoroscopic and cone-beam CT (CBCT) guidance, and obtained satisfying resolution of painful symptoms at 6-month postop follow-up. Conclusion: POP is a safe and effective treatment for pain caused by metastatic bone tumors in the sternum. In practice, however, percutaneous puncture of pathologic sternal fractures can be a challenge because of the long flat contour and the defacement by lytic tumor of bony landmarks. We find that the use of fluoroscopic and CBCT can facilitate POP for flat bone fractures with displacing the trajectory planning, needle advancement, and cement delivery in time.

Importance: Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is associated with poor glycemic control and early onset of complications. Identification of psychosocial factors associated with poor glycemic control is needed to inform efficacious interventions. Objective: To identify psychosocial factors associated with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes. Design, Setting, and Participants: For the iCount cohort study, HbA1c levels were measured twice (at baseline [T1] and at 1 year [T2]) during the last years (2017-2019) of the observational phase of the multicenter Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY2) study. Participants were young adults who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during childhood or adolescence. Data were analyzed from December 2021 to September 2023. Main Outcomes and Measures: Glycemic control was examined categorically (high [≥8.0%] vs low [<8.0%] HbA1c), continuously (HbA1c level), and over time (change in HbA1c: decreased ≥0.5%, remained stable, or increased ≥0.5%). Psychosocial measures included beliefs about medicines, depression and anxiety symptoms, diabetes distress, diabetes self-efficacy, self-management support, and unmet material needs. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models evaluated the association of each psychosocial factor with the probability of T2 HbA1c of 8.0% or greater, T2 HbA1c level, and change in HbA1c. Results: Of the 411 TODAY2 participants approached, 381 enrolled in the iCount study, and 348 with T1 and T2 HbA1c data comprised the analysis group. The 348 participants had a mean (SD) age of 26.1 (2.5) years and a mean (SD) HbA1c of 9.4% (2.8%). Most participants (229 [65.8%]) were women. In adjusted multivariable regressions, greater beliefs that diabetes medicines are necessary (odds ratio [OR], 1.19 [95% CI, 1.03-1.37]; P = .02), concerns about medicines (OR, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.00-1.45]; P = .049), diabetes distress (OR, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.02-1.15]; P = .006), and high distress (OR, 2.18 [95% CI, 1.15-4.13]; P = .02) increased the odds of high HbA1c at T2. Greater support (OR, 0.67 [95% CI, 0.46-0.97]; P = .04) and diabetes self-efficacy (OR, 0.91 [95% CI, 0.84-0.99]; P = .02) decreased the odds of high HbA1c at T2. Diabetes distress was associated with higher HbA1c level at T2 (coefficient, 0.08 [95% CI, 0.02-0.13]; P = .01). Beliefs that diabetes medicines are necessary (OR, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.03-1.39]; P = .02) and concerns about medicines (OR, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.00-1.47]; P = .048) increased the odds of an HbA1c decrease of at least 0.5% over 1 year. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes, beliefs about medicines, high diabetes distress, low diabetes self-efficacy, and self-management support were associated with high HbA1c over time. Future research should assess whether interventions that address these factors result in improved glycemic control in this at-risk group.

The critical challenge of effectively removing Pb-EDTA complexes and Pb(II) ions from wastewater is pivotal for environmental remediation. This research introduces a cutting-edge bulk-MoS2/H2O2 system designed for the simultaneous decomplexation of Pb-EDTA complexes and extraction of free Pb(II) ions, streamlining the process by eliminating the need for subsequent treatment stages. The system exhibits outstanding efficiency, achieving 98.1% decomplexation of Pb-EDTA and 98.6% removal of Pb. Its effectiveness is primarily due to the generation of reactive oxygen species, notably •OH and O2•- radicals, facilitated by bulk-MoS2 and H2O2. Key operational parameters such as reagent dosages, Pb(II): EDTA molar ratios, solution pH, and the presence of coexisting ions were meticulously evaluated to determine their impact on the system's performance. Through a suite of analytical techniques, the study confirmed the disruption of Pb-O and Pb-N bonds, further elucidating the decomplexation process. It also underscored the synergistic role of bulk-MoS2's adsorption properties and the formation of PbMoO4-like precipitates in enhancing Pb elimination. Demonstrating the bulk-MoS2/H2O2 system as a robust, one-step solution that meets stringent Pb emission standards, this study provides in-depth insights into the removal mechanisms of Pb-EDTA, affirming its potential for broader application in wastewater treatment practices.

Formaldehyde, a common illegal additive in aquatic products, poses a threat to people's health and lives. In this study, a novel metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor based on AuPd-modified WO3 nanosheets (NSs) had been developed for the highly efficient detection of formaldehyde. WO3 NS modified with 2.0% AuPd nanoparticles showed a higher response (Ra/Rg = 94.2) to 50 ppm of formaldehyde at 210 °C, which was 36 times more than the pristine WO3 NS. In addition, the AuPd/WO3 gas sensor had a relatively short response/recovery time of 10 s/9 s for 50 ppm of formaldehyde at 210 °C, with good immunity to other interfering gases and good stability for formaldehyde. The excellent gas-sensitive performance was attributed to the chemical sensitization of Au, the electronic sensitization of Pd, and the synergistic effect of bimetallic AuPd, which facilitated the recognition and response of formaldehyde molecules. Additionally, the high sensitivity and broad application prospect of the 2.0% AuPd/WO3 NS composite-based sensor in real sample detection were also confirmed by using the above sensor for the detection of formaldehyde in aquatic products such as squid and shrimp.

Mercury contamination in groundwater is a serious global environmental issue that poses threats to human and environmental health. While MoS2 nanosheets have been proven promising in removing Hg from groundwater, an effective tool for in situ groundwater remediation is still needed. In this study, we investigated the transport and retention behavior of MoS2 nanosheets in sand column, and employed the formed MoS2in situ reactive zone (IRZ) for the remediation of Hg-contaminated groundwater. Breakthrough test revealed that high flow velocity and MoS2 initial concentration promoted the transport of MoS2 in sand column, while the addition of Ca ions increased the retention of MoS2. In Hg removal experiments, the groundwater flow velocity did not influence the Hg removal capacity due to the fast reaction rate between MoS2 and Hg. With an optimized MoS2 loading, MoS2IRZ effectively reduced the Hg effluent concentration down to <1 µg/L without apparent Hg remobilization. Additionally, flake-like MoS2 employed in this study showed much better Hg removal performance than flower-like and bulk MoS2, as well as other reported materials, with the Hg removal capacity a few to tens of times higher than those materials. These results suggest that MoS2 nanosheets have the potential to be an efficient IRZ reactive material for in situ remediation of Hg in contaminated groundwater.

AIM: To explore the therapeutic effect and main molecular mechanisms of acteoside in a glaucoma model in DBA/2J mice. METHODS: Proteomics was used to compare the differentially expressed proteins of C57 and DBA/2J mice. After acteoside administration in DBA/2J mice, anterior segment observation, intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring, electrophysiology examination, and hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to analyze any potential effects. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were used to verify the proteomics results. Furthermore, retinal ganglion cell 5 (RGC5) cell proliferation was assessed with cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays. Serta domain-containing protein 4 (Sertad4) mRNA and protein expression levels were measured by qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. RESULTS: Proteomics analysis suggested that Sertad4 was the most significantly differentially expressed protein. Compared with the saline group, the acteoside treatment group showed decreased IOP, improved N1-P1 wave amplitudes, thicker retina, and larger numbers of cells in the ganglion cell layer (GCL). The IHC results showed that Sertad4 expression levels in DBA/2J mice treated with acteoside were significantly lower than in the saline group. Acteoside treatment could improve RGC5 cell survival and reduce the Sertad4 mRNA and protein expression levels after glutamate injury. CONCLUSION: Sertad4 is differentially expressed in DBA/2J mice. Acteoside can protect RGCs from damage, possibly through the downregulation of Sertad4, and has a potential use in glaucoma treatment.

Cognitive control resolves conflicts between task-relevant and -irrelevant information to enable goal-directed behavior. As conflicts can arise from different sources (e.g., sensory input, internal representations), how a limited set of cognitive control processes can effectively address diverse conflicts remains a major challenge. Based on the cognitive space theory, different conflicts can be parameterized and represented as distinct points in a (low-dimensional) cognitive space, which can then be resolved by a limited set of cognitive control processes working along the dimensions. It leads to a hypothesis that conflicts similar in their sources are also represented similarly in the cognitive space. We designed a task with five types of conflicts that could be conceptually parameterized. Both human performance and fMRI activity patterns in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex support that different types of conflicts are organized based on their similarity, thus suggesting cognitive space as a principle for representing conflicts.


You are reading a book in your local coffeeshop, when your focus gets broken by the couple at the next table, passionately discussing mortgage rates. To minimise this interruption your brain engages in 'cognitive control', resolving conflicts between competing stimuli to prioritise one over another. Having finally regained your focus, another distraction emerges, this time of a different nature. Does your brain use the same mental mechanisms as before, and therefore a common brain circuit? Or does each kind of stimulus require a specific process? Tasks that involve successively presenting different distractors can help explore these questions by testing for a process known as generalization: if the same mental mechanism underpins the resolution of all conflicts, distractors should become easier to ignore after the first trial. Based on this paradigm, Yang et al. recorded brain activity during a modified version of a spatial Stroop-Simon task. Participants were asked to press a left or right button based on whether an arrow was pointing up or down, with both the vertical and horizontal position of the symbol potentially causing interference. For instance, accurate decision-making may be impaired when an arrow 'down' the bottom of the screen is pointing up (Stroop effect); or when participants must press the left button for an arrow shown on their right (Simon effect). Overall, the arrows could appear in 10 possible locations, giving rise to five types of conflicts with a unique blend of Stroop and Simon effects, with different levels of similarity. The results showed that the degree to which conflicts could generalize to each other depended on their similarity: the more similar the conflicts, the easier it was to resolve one after having faced another. This is contrary to previous views suggesting that different conflict types either entirely generalized or could not generalize at all. In addition, the analyses revealed that the neural networks involved in resolving each conflict type were organised in a continuous manner within a region called the prefrontal cortex. This pattern resembles how spatial information is arranged in the brain, prompting Yang et al. to suggest that cognitive control also falls under a set of principles known as cognitive space representations. Overall, the methodology employed in this work could prove useful to researchers from other fields who also investigate whether various stimuli are processed via the same or different neural networks.

The mechanisms of semantic conflict and response conflict in the Stroop task have mainly been investigated in the visual modality. However, the understanding of these mechanisms in cross-modal modalities remains limited. In this electroencephalography (EEG) study, an audiovisual 2-1 mapping Stroop task was utilized to investigate whether distinct and/or common neural mechanisms underlie cross-modal semantic conflict and response conflict. The response time data showed significant effects on both cross-modal semantic and response conflicts. Interestingly, the magnitude of semantic conflict was found to be smaller in the fast response time bins than in the slow response time bins, whereas no such difference was observed for response conflict. The EEG data demonstrated that cross-modal semantic conflict specifically increased the N450 amplitude. However, cross-modal response conflict specifically enhanced theta band power and theta phase synchronization between the medial frontal cortex (MFC) and lateral prefrontal electrodes as well as between the MFC and motor electrodes. In addition, both cross-modal semantic conflict and response conflict led to a decrease in P3 amplitude. Taken together, these findings provide cross-modal evidence for domain-specific mechanism in conflict detection and suggest both domain-specific and domain-general mechanisms exist in conflict resolution.
