ABSTRACT

In response to the escalating demand for flexible devices in applications such as wearables, sensors, and touch panels, there is a need for innovative fabrication approaches for devices made from nanomaterial-based inks. Subsequent to ink deposition, a pivotal stage in device manufacturing typically involves high-temperature sintering, posing challenges for heat-sensitive substrates. Nonthermal plasma jet sintering utilizing an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet enables sintering at room temperature and standard pressure, facilitating the sintering of printed nanoparticle films without compromising substrate or film surface integrity. However, determining optimal plasma jet sintering conditions can be challenging due to multiple processing variables with intricate interrelationships. This work employed Bayesian optimization (BO) and machine learning (ML) to identify optimal values for seven primary plasma jet sintering variables. Optimization yielded a 99.2% increase in the measured electrical conductivity for plasma jet-sintered indium tin oxide (ITO) films after five rounds of experiments. Moreover, the optimal sintering conditions achieved an electrical conductivity that was 81.4% of conventional furnace sintering at 300 °C, but was three times faster and with a peak substrate temperature below 47 °C. This result demonstrates the prospect of applying BO to optimize processing techniques for emerging low-temperature requirements.

ABSTRACT

In reinforcement learning, a promising direction to avoid online trial-and-error costs is learning from an offline dataset. Current offline reinforcement learning methods commonly learn in the policy space constrained to in-support regions by the offline dataset, in order to ensure the robustness of the outcome policies. Such constraints, however, also limit the potential of the outcome policies. In this paper, to release the potential of offline policy learning, we investigate the decision-making problems in out-of-support regions directly and propose offline Model-based Adaptable Policy LEarning (MAPLE). By this approach, instead of learning in in-support regions, we learn an adaptable policy that can adapt its behavior in out-of-support regions when deployed. We give a practical implementation of MAPLE via meta-learning techniques and ensemble model learning techniques. We conduct experiments on MuJoCo locomotion tasks with offline datasets. The results show that the proposed method can make robust decisions in out-of-support regions and achieve better performance than SOTA algorithms.

ABSTRACT

Optimizing material compositions often enhances thermoelectric performances. However, the large selection of possible base elements and dopants results in a vast composition design space that is too large to systematically search using solely domain knowledge. To address this challenge, a hybrid data-driven strategy that integrates Bayesian optimization (BO) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed to optimize the composition of five elements (Ag, Se, S, Cu, and Te) in AgSe-based thermoelectric materials. Data is collected from the literature to provide prior knowledge for the initial GPR model, which is updated by actively collected experimental data during the iteration between BO and experiments. Within seven iterations, the optimized AgSe-based materials prepared using a simple high-throughput ink mixing and blade coating method deliver a high power factor of 2100 µW m-1 K-2 , which is a 75% improvement from the baseline composite (nominal composition of Ag2 Se1 ). The success of this study provides opportunities to generalize the demonstrated active machine learning technique to accelerate the development and optimization of a wide range of material systems with reduced experimental trials.

ABSTRACT

The ageing of the population has resulted in an increase in the demand for long-term care services for older people, but with limited resources, its challenges have also been highlighted. Although factors affecting the willingness of older people to engage with long-term care services have been widely reported, however, systematic review has not synthesised the evidence, and its associated factors remain unclear. This systematic review aims to study and synthesise the best available evidence on the potential factors related to the willingness of older people to engage with long-term care services. Eight electronic databases were comprehensively searched from inception to January 2021: the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Wanfang Database, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), Weipu Database (VIP), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM). The original literatures were screened according to selection criteria. Two researchers used 11-item checklist recommended by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to evaluate the quality of the included literatures. And the review used narrative synthesis to integrate factors related to the willingness of older people to engage with long-term care services. In total, 7794 studies were screened and 35 studies were included in this review. Among them, 23 studies were rated as moderate quality and 12 was high quality. Data synthesis identified that age, education, number of children, living arrangements, the relationship with children, primary caregivers, place of residence, social support, household income, medical insurance, activities of daily living ability and spiritual comfort should all be taken into account when establishing the appropriate long-term care service model or formulating relevant policies. However, many factors remain undetermined and require more rigorous original literature support. And multiple areas can be also considered in the future studies, especially psychological factors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common disease that can cause muscle weakness and atrophy among adults. Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is characterized by the triad of gait disturbance, cognitive impairment and urinary incontinence. The association between DM1 and NPH is extremely rare. We report a Chinese female patient with DM1 in association with NPH. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented with a history of 3-year of walking instability and cognitive impairment. Her brain MRI showed ventriculomegaly with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and the CSF tap-test was positive, which indicated the diagnosis of probable NPH. DM1 was confirmed by genetic testing. CONCLUSIONS: Four patients with DM1-NPH association were found before. The association between NPH and DM1 may not be just a coincidence, NPH may occur in DM1 later in life and it is vital to recognize the association as a shunt surgery may improve patients' quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Septins are GTP-binding proteins that regulate cell polarity, cytokinesis and cell morphogenesis. Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum, is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide. In this study, we have functionally characterized the core septins, Cdc3, Cdc10, Cdc11 and Cdc12 in F. graminearum. The loss of FgCdc3, FgCdc11, FgCdc12, but not FgCdc10, mutants showed significant reduction in growth, conidiation and virulence. Microscopic analyses revealed that all of them were involved in septum formation and nuclear division. Moreover, disruption of septin genes resulted in morphological defects in ascospores and conidia. Interestingly, conidia produced by ΔFgcdc3, ΔFgcdc11 and ΔFgcdc12 mutants exhibited deformation with interconnecting conidia in contrast to their parent wild-type strain PH-1 and the ΔFgcdc10 mutant that produced normal conidia. Using yeast two-hybrid assays, we determined the interactions among FgCdc3, FgCdc10, FgCdc11 and FgCdc12. Taken together, our results indicate that septins play important roles in the nuclear division, morphogenesis and pathogenicity in F. graminearum.

ABSTRACT

Fusarium graminearum is an important plant pathogen that causes head blight of major cereal crops. The vacuolar protein sorting (Vps) protein Vps27 is a component of ESCRT-0 involved in the multivesicular body (MVB) sorting pathway during endocytosis. In this study, we investigated the function of FgVps27 using a gene replacement strategy. The FgVPS27 deletion mutant (ΔFgvps27) exhibited a reduction in growth rate, aerial hyphae formation and hydrophobicity. It also showed increased sensitivity to cell wall-damaging agents and to osmotic stresses. In addition, FgHog1, the critical component of high osmolarity glycerol response pathway, was mis-localized in the ΔFgvps27 mutant upon NaCl treatment. Furthermore, the ΔFgvps27 mutant was defective in conidial production and was unable to generate perithecium in sexual reproduction. The depletion of FgVPS27 also caused a significant reduction in virulence. Further analysis by domain-specific deletion revealed that the FYVE domain was essential for the FgVps27 function and was necessary for the proper localization of FgVps27-GFP and endocytosis. Another component of ESCRT-0, the FgVps27-interacting partner FgHse1, also played an important role in F. graminearum development and pathogenesis. Overall, our results indicate that ESCRT-0 components play critical roles in a variety of cellular and biological processes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of echinococcosis in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province since the implementation of the echinococcosis control project from Sepical Funds for Central Government Subsidies to Local Public Health (2007-2011). METHODS: Eight counties of Hezuo, Lintan, Zhuoni, Luqu, Maqu, Xiahe, Zhouqu, and Diebu were selected as survey sites. The prevalence in the sampled population was investigated by B ultrasound examination. Hydatid infection in children below 12 years old was serologically investigated by ELISA. The fecal samples from dogs were determined for Echinococcus infection by double antibody sandwich ELISA method. Livestock were dissected through slaughterhouse for pathological examination. Data of echinococcosis cases of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture from 2007 to 2011 were collected from the National Infectious Diseases Reporting System, and statistically analyzed by using SPSS 10.0 and Epi info software. RESULTS: A total of 257 823 people received type B ultrasound examination in the 5 years. Five hundred eighty-one echinococcosis cases were found with an overall prevalence of 0.2%, including 578 cases of echinococcosis granulosus and 3 cases of echinococcosis multilocularis. The annual prevalence in the population decreased year by year, from 0.4% (97/21 938) in 2007 to 0.1% (68/63 980) in 2011 (P <0.05). Three hundred and six cases were officially reported to the National Infectious Diseases Reporting System during the period. Among those, female patients accounted for 58.2% (178/306) and male patients 41.8% (128/ 306). By occupation, more infection were found in herdsmen (82.0%, 251/306), followed by farmers (7.8%; 24/306). The cases were mainly distributed in the 20-60 year-old age group, with the highest prevalence in the group of 30-39 years (23.5%, 72/306). The sero-positive rate in children was 4.7% (1 571/33 613), which was highest in 2008 (8.4%, 413/4907), and lowest in 2010 (3.2%, 223/7 021) (P < 0.05). The mean positive rate of coproantigen in dogs was 6.3% (2 511/40 179), decreased from 11.9% (335/2 819) in 2007 to 6.3% (734/11 666) in 2011 (P < 0.05), with lowest positive rate in 2009 (3.7%, 354/9 550). The mean prevalence of livestock was 4.1% (914/22 087), decreased from 8.8% (235/2 658) in 2007 to 2.0% (144/7 347) in 2011 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Since the project implementation for echinococcosis control in 2007, the prevalence of hydatid desease in the population, the sero-positive rate in children, the positive rate of dog coproantigen, and the prevalence in livestock have been significantly decreased.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To understand the endemic status of echinococcosis in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. METHODS: The 2007-2013 survey data on hydatid disease prevention and control were collected from 8 counties/cities in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and analyzed. Ultrasound scanning was used to detect echinococcosis infection, ELISA was performed to detect anti-Echinococcus IgG in serum of children under 12 years, and double-antibody sandwich ELISA method was used to detect Echinococcus antigen in dog's feces. Visceral dissection was performed to examine hydatid infection in domestic ruminants. RESULTS: The prevalence of echinococcosis in residents was 225/100 000 (810/360 440), comprising 224/10 0000 (807/360 440) for cystic echinococcosis and 1/100 000(3/360 440) for alveolar echinococcosis. The prevalence was 2.3/100 000(340/151 280) in males and 2.3/100 000(470/209 160) in females, with no significant difference(χ(2)=6.41 ,P>0.05). Among different age populations, the 30-40 age group had the highest proportion (44.2%, 358/810) to all detected infections. Besides, the prevalence was the highest in herdsmen, followed by farmers. Echinococcosis was detected in 372 administrative villages in the Prefecture. The positive rate for serum anti-Echinococcus IgG was 4.0%(1 921/47 841) in children under 12 years. The positive rate for Echinococcus antigen in dog's feces was 5.5% (3 523/64 521). The rate of hydatid infection in domestic ruminants was 3.3% (1 148/35 134). After seven years' comprehensive control, the prevalence of echinococcosis in residents dropped from 440/100 000(97/21 938) in 2007 to 290/100 000 (160/55 954) in 2013 (χ(2)=11.69,P<0.05). The positive rate for serum anti-Echinococcus IgG in children also dropped from 7.9% (150/1 902) in 2007 to 2.1% (151/7 100) in 2013. Consistently, the positive rate for Echinococcus antigen in dog's feces dropped from 11.9% (335/2 819) in 2007 to 3.3%(466/13 608) in 2013 (X(2)= 338.52,P<0.05); and the rate of hydatid infection in domestic ruminants dropped from 8.8%(235/2 658) in 2007 to 1.5%(107/7 271) in 2013(χ(2)=317.86, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The control activities during 2007-2013 has shown significant achievements in reducing echinococcosis in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
