Vanadyl sulfate (VS), is a component of some food supplements and experimental drugs. This study was carried out to present a novel method for induction of Type 2 diabetes in rats, then for the first time in literature, for evaluating the effect of VS on metabolic parameters and gene expression, simultaneously. 40 male wistar rats were distributed between the four groups, equally. High fat diet and fructose were used for diabetes induction. Diabetic rats treated by two different dose of VS for 12 weeks. Metabolic profiles were evaluated by commercial available kits and gene expression were assayed by real time-PCR. Compared to controls, in non-treated diabetic rats, weight, glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, insulin and insulin resistance were increased significantly (p-value <0.05) that indicated induction of type 2 diabetes. Further, the results showed that VS significantly reduced weight, insulin secretion, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) genes expression, lipid profiles except HDL that we couldn't find any significant change and increased Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor- gamma (PPAR-γ) gene expression in VS-treated diabetic animals in comparison with the non-treated diabetics. Our study demonstrated that vanadyl supplementation in diabetic rats had advantageous effects on metabolic profiles and related gene expression.

Pathological dermal scars such as keloids present significant clinical challenges lacking effective treatment options. Given the distinctive feature of highly stiffened scar tissues, deciphering how matrix mechanics regulate pathological progression can inform new therapeutic strategies. Here, it is shown that pathological dermal scar keloid fibroblasts display unique metamorphoses to stiffened matrix. Compared to normal fibroblasts, keloid fibroblasts show high sensitivity to stiffness rather than biochemical stimulation, activating cytoskeletal-to-nuclear mechanosensing molecules. Notably, keloid fibroblasts on stiff matrices exhibit nuclear softening, concomitant with reduced lamin A/C expression, and disrupted anchoring of lamina-associated chromatin. This nuclear softening, combined with weak adhesion and high contractility, facilitates the invasive migration of keloid fibroblasts through confining matrices. Inhibiting lamin A/C-driven nuclear softening, via lamin A/C overexpression or actin disruption, mitigates such invasiveness of keloid fibroblasts. These findings highlight the significance of the nuclear mechanics of keloid fibroblasts in scar pathogenesis and propose lamin A/C as a potential therapeutic target for managing pathological scars.

Advancements in materials-driven mechanobiology have yielded significant progress. Mechanobiology explores how cellular and tissue mechanics impact development, physiology, and disease, where extracellular matrix (ECM) dynamically interacts with cells. Biomaterial-based platforms emulate synthetic ECMs, offering precise control over cellular behaviors by adjusting mechanical properties. Recent technological advances enable in vitro models replicating active mechanical stimuli in vivo. These models manipulate cellular mechanics even at a subcellular level. In this review we discuss recent material-based mechanomodulatory studies in mechanobiology. We highlight the endeavors to mimic the dynamic properties of native ECM during pathophysiological processes like cellular homeostasis, lineage specification, development, aging, and disease progression. These insights may inform the design of accurate in vitro mechanomodulatory platforms that replicate ECM mechanics.

Ten percent of people who are of reproductive age experience infertility. Sometimes the most effective therapies, including technology for assisted reproduction, may lead to unsuccessful implantation. Because of the anticipated epigenetic alterations of in vitro as well as in vitro fertilization growth of embryos, these fertility techniques have also been linked to unfavorable pregnancy outcomes linked to infertility. In this regard, a variety of non-coding RNAs such as long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) act as epigenetic regulators in the various physiological and pathophysiological events such as infertility. LncRNAs have been made up of cytoplasmic and nuclear nucleotides; RNA polymerase II transcribes these, which are lengthier than 200 nt. LncRNAs perform critical roles in a number of biological procedures like nuclear transport, X chromosome inactivation, apoptosis, stem cell pluripotency, as well as genomic imprinting. A significant amount of lncRNAs were linked into a variety of biological procedures as high throughput sequencing technology advances, including the development of the testes, preserving spermatogonial stem cells' capacity for differentiation along with self-renewal, and controlling spermatocyte meiosis. All of them point to possible utility of lncRNAs to be biomarkers and treatment aims for female infertility. Herein, we summarize various lncRNAs that are involved in female infertility.

Objective: Echium amoenum and Hypericum perforatum dried flowers have been used for therapy of mental disorders in Iranian traditional medicine. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of the E. amoenum and H. perforatum extracts in patients with mild to moderate depression. Materials and Methods: In an 8-week double-blind, parallel-group trial, 51 patients randomly consumed 20 mg of fluoxetine or 350 mg of herbal medicine twice daily. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) was used to assess depression severity in patients at weeks 0, 4, and 8. Results: According to the Hamilton score, there were no significant differences between the fluoxetine- and herbal medicine-treated groups after 4 and 8 weeks (p>0.05). Dry mouth was the only reported side effect which was significantly lower in the herbal group (p<0.05) in weeks 2 and 4. Conclusion: E. amoenum and H. perforatum have anti-depressant properties similar to fluoxetine and they can be used to treat depression as an alternative to fluoxetine.

Background: Previous evidence revealed an association between folate deficiency and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study is the first one investigating the effects of folic acid on hepatic steatosis grade, liver enzymes, insulin resistance, and lipid profile in NAFLD cases. Materials and Methods: Sixty-six participants with NAFLD were allocated randomly to take either a placebo or one oral tablet of folic acid (1 mg) on a daily basis within eight weeks. Serum folate, homocysteine, glucose, aminotransferases, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and lipids were assessed. Ultrasonography was used for assessing the liver steatosis grade. Results: The serum alanine transaminase, grade of hepatic steatosis, and aspartate transaminase significantly were decreased within both study groups; however, the between-group comparison was not statistically significant. Of note, the decrease in ALT was more pronounced in folic acid compared with the placebo group (-5.45 ± 7.45 vs. -2.19 ± 8.6 IU/L). The serum homocysteine was decreased after receiving folic acid compared to the placebo (-0.58 ± 3.41 vs. +0.4 ± 3.56 µmol/L; adjusted P = 0.054). Other outcomes did not significantly change. Conclusion: Supplementation with folic acid (1 mg/d) for eight weeks among cases with NAFLD did not change significantly the serum levels of liver enzymes, the hepatic steatosis grade, insulin resistance and lipid profile. However, it was able to prevent the increase in homocysteine in comparison with the placebo. Conducting further research is suggested with the longer duration and different doses of folic acid, adjusted to the genotypes of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase polymorphism, among NAFLD patients.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a devastating impact on health systems, food supplies, and population health. This is the first study to examine the association between zinc and vitamin C intakes and the risk of disease severity and symptoms among COVID-19 patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 250 recovered COVID-19 patients aged 18-65 years from June to September 2021. Data on demographics, anthropometrics, medical history, and disease severity and symptoms were collected. Dietary intake was evaluated using a web-based, 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The severity of the disease was determined using the most recent version of the NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines. Using multivariable binary logistic regression, the association between zinc and vitamin C intakes and the risk of disease severity and symptoms in COVID-19 patients was evaluated. RESULTS: The mean age of participants in this study was 44.1 ± 12.1, 52.4% of them were female, and 46% had a severe form of the disease. Participants with higher zinc intakes had lower levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) (13.6 vs. 25.8 mg/l) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (15.9 vs. 29.3). In a fully adjusted model, a higher zinc intake was also associated with a lower risk of severe disease (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.90, P-trend = 0.03). Similarly, participants with higher vitamin C intakes had lower CRP (10.3 vs. 31.5 mg/l) and ESR serum concentrations (15.6 Vs. 35.6) and lower odds of severe disease after controlling for potential covariates (OR: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.65, P-trend = <0.01). Furthermore, an inverse association was found between dietary zinc intake and COVID-19 symptoms, such as dyspnea, cough, weakness, nausea and vomiting, and sore throat. Higher vitamin C intake was associated with a lower risk of dyspnea, cough, fever, chills, weakness, myalgia, nausea and vomiting, and sore throat. CONCLUSION: In the current study, higher zinc and vitamin C intakes were associated with decreased odds of developing severe COVID-19 and its common symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Cornus mas fruit has various antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, so this study aims at assessing its effect on menopausal symptoms and sex hormones in postmenopausal women. METHODS: In the current randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 84 individuals (42 per group) were participated. C mas hydroalcoholic extract was prepared, and participants received 300 mg C mas extract or placebo three times a day (900 g in total) for 8 weeks. The demographic, dietary intake, and physical activity information were gathered. Anthropometric indices were measured by standard methods. Furthermore, menopause symptoms were assessed by Greene Climacteric Scale. Also, sex hormones were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Based on the results, there was a significant difference in total Greene score reduction between the intervention and placebo groups (-3.19 ± 0.54, -0.76 ± 0.32, and P < 0.001). In addition, vasomotor symptoms had a remarkable decrease in the C mas extract group (P < 0.001). Also, the intervention group demonstrated a decreasing trend in the number and duration of hot flushes. Moreover, follicle-stimulating hormone remarkably decreased and estradiol increased in the intervention group (P = 0.016 and P = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS: It has been found that the extract of C mas fruit has a favorable effect on vasomotor symptoms, sex hormones, and related complications in women experiencing menopausal symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Maintaining the predialysis serum bicarbonate at a recommended level is critical in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Therefore, the present study investigated the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and serum predialysis bicarbonate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease. METHODS: Adult patients undergoing hemodialysis were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Diet was assessed using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. DAL was calculated with 2 validated indices: potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP). Values regarding predialysis serum bicarbonate level and serum electrolytes were obtained from the participant's medical records. The multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association between DAL indices and predialysis serum bicarbonate level. RESULTS: The number of hemodialysis patients eligible for this study was 122. The participants' mean age and body mass index was 57.14 ± 3.8 years and 25.2 ± 4.9 kg/m2, respectively. About 65.6% of participants were male. The mean serum levels of predialysis bicarbonate were 21.59 ± 3.1 mEq/L. Also, 47.5% of patients had predialysis serum bicarbonate levels below the recommended value. The mean values of PRAL and NEAP were -2.8 ± 7.48 and 42.7 ± 10.1 mEq/day, respectively. PRAL significantly and inversely predicted predialysis serum bicarbonate level independent of covariates (standardized ß = -0.38; P < .001). Also, NEAP was independently and inversely associated with predialysis bicarbonate level (standardized ß = -0.40; P < .001). Consuming vegetables such as lettuce, tomato, cucumber, spinach, and dried fruits as well as low-fat milk, plain yogurt, and cream cheese were positively correlated to predialysis serum bicarbonate level. However, the canned tuna had a negative correlation with the predialysis serum bicarbonate. CONCLUSIONS: The study's findings showed that the lower DAL was associated with higher predialysis serum bicarbonate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the present study, prospective cohorts or well-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm our result.

Probiotics positively influence age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) given their propensity to attenuate oxidative and inflammatory stress. We addressed the impact of probiotics on metabolic profiles, clinical indices, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters in ARMD patients. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial analyzing 57 subjects with ARMD aged between 50 and 85 years. Subjects were randomized into two groups, and received daily for 8 weeks either probiotic capsule or placebo. Fasting blood samples were obtained at baseline and after the 8-week intervention for the determination of metabolic profiles and oxidative stress biomarkers. After the 8-week intervention, compared with the placebo, probiotic supplementation significantly increased means HDL-cholesterol (Probiotic group: +3.86±4.42 vs. Placebo group: -0.55±4.93 mg/dL, P = .001), plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (Probiotic group: +77.43±168.30 vs. Placebo group: -23.12±169.22 mmol/L, P = .02) and significantly decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (Probiotic group: -0.18±0.46 vs. Placebo group: +0.18±0.25 µmol/L, P = .001). There was no significant effect of probiotic administration on other metabolic profiles and clinical symptoms. Overall, an eight-week probiotic administration among ARMD patients had beneficial effects on TAC, MDA and HDL-cholesterol levels; however, it did not affect clinical signs and other metabolic profiles.

Background and aims: Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber and a good source of anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. We investigated the association between fruits, vegetables, and fiber intake and severity of COVID-19 and related symptoms in hospitalized patients. Methods: A total of 250 COVID-19 hospitalized patients aged 18 to 65 years were recruited for this cross-sectional study in Kashan, Iran, between June and September of 2021. Dietary intakes were assessed using an online validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). COVID-19 severity and symptoms were evaluated using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines. Moreover, we examined COVID-19 symptoms, inflammatory biomarkers, and additional factors. Results: The mean age of participants was 44.2 ± 12.1 years, and 46% had severe COVID-19. Patients with higher consumption of fruits (OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.14-0.58, P-trend <0.001), vegetables (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.16-0.69, P-trend <0.001), and dietary fiber (OR: 0.25; 95% CI: 0.12-0.53, P-trend <0.001) had lower odds of having severe COVID-19. In addition, they had shorter hospitalization and convalescence periods, lower serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and a reduced risk of developing COVID-19 symptoms such as sore throat, nausea and vomiting, dyspnea, myalgia, cough, weakness, fever, and chills. Conclusion: Higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fiber was inversely linked with COVID-19 severity, clinical symptoms, hospitalization and convalescence duration, and CRP concentrations. The results should be interpreted with caution in light of the limitations, and prospective cohort studies are required to further evaluate these findings.

After several billions of years, nature still makes decisions on its own to identify, develop, and direct the most effective material for phenomena/challenges faced. Likewise, and inspired by the nature, we learned how to take steps in developing new technologies and materials innovations. Wet and strong adhesion by Mytilidae mussels (among which Mytilus edulis-blue mussel and Mytilus californianus-California mussel are the most well-known species) has been an inspiration in developing advanced adhesives for the moist condition. The wet adhesion phenomenon is significant in designing tissue adhesives and surgical sealants. However, a deep understanding of engaged chemical moieties, microenvironmental conditions of secreted proteins, and other contributing mechanisms for outstanding wet adhesion mussels are essential for the optimal design of wet glues. In this review, all aspects of wet adhesion of Mytilidae mussels, as well as different strategies needed for designing and fabricating wet adhesives are discussed from a chemistry point of view. Developed muscle-inspired chemistry is a versatile technique when designing not only wet adhesive, but also, in several more applications, especially in the bioengineering area. The applications of muscle-inspired biomaterials in various medical applications are summarized for future developments in the field.

Background: COVID-19 is a highly transmissible viral infection with high morbidity. Few studies have been done about dietary intakes in patients with COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the association between major dietary patterns before COVID-19 diagnosis in recovered patients and the risk of disease severity and symptoms after the disease begins. Methods: Overall, 250 recovered cases with both genders completed study questionnaires providing data on demographic characteristics, self-reported web-based 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and COVID-19 outcomes in Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Kashan. PCR was used to determine a positive diagnosis of COVID-19. We used multivariable logistic regression models to assess the association between major dietary patterns and study outcomes. All statistical analyses were done by SPSS version 16. Results: We identified three major dietary patterns-unhealthy, traditional, and healthy dietary patterns. Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were significantly higher in patients with unhealthy and traditional dietary patterns and lower in those with healthy dietary patterns. There was a significant direct relationship between unhealthy and traditional patterns with risk of severe COVID-19 and hospitalization duration and a significant direct association between an unhealthy pattern and the odds ratio (OR) of convalescence duration. A significant inverse relationship was found between healthy pattern and risk of severe COVID-19 and OR of convalescence duration. We found a significant direct association between unhealthy pattern and OR of cough, fever, chilling, weakness, myalgia, nausea and vomiting, and sore throat and between traditional pattern and OR of cough, fever, and chilling. In contrast, a significant inverse association was seen between healthy pattern and OR of dyspnea, weakness, and sore throat. Conclusion: This study showed that high adherence to an healthy pattern was associated with lower CRP and ESR levels and lower risk of severe COVID-19, hospitalization, and convalescence duration in patients who recovered from COVID-19. More adherence to unhealthy or traditional dietary patterns was associated with higher CRP and ESR levels and a higher risk of severe COVID-19 and hospitalization duration. A direct association was found between unhealthy and traditional patterns and the risk of some COVID-19 symptoms, while an inverse association was found for a healthy dietary pattern.

The present study is the first effort to evaluate the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation on the serum level of liver enzymes, homocysteine, grade of hepatic steatosis, and metabolic profiles in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Forty patients with NAFLD were enrolled in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial to receive either one oral tablet of vitamin B12 (1000 µg cyanocobalamin) or a placebo per day for 12 weeks. We investigated serum levels of homocysteine, aminotransferases, fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipids, malondialdehyde (MDA), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The grade of liver steatosis and fibrosis was measured by real-time 2-dimensional shear wave elastography. Vitamin B12 supplementation significantly decreased serum levels of homocysteine compared to placebo (medians: - 2.1 vs. - 0.003 µmol/l; P = 0.038). Although serum alanine transaminase (ALT) in the vitamin B12 group decreased significantly, this change did not reach a significant level compared to the placebo group (medians: - 7.0 vs. 0.0 IU/l; P > 0.05). Despite the significant within-group decrease in FBG, MDA, and liver steatosis in the vitamin B12 group, between-group comparisons did not reveal any significant difference. Vitamin B12 supplementation might decrease serum levels of homocysteine in patients with NAFLD. The fasting blood glucose and serum levels of MDA were significantly improved in the trial group who received vitamin B12. However, these changes did not reach a significant level compared to the placebo group. In this respect, further studies with larger sample sizes, different doses, and types of vitamin B12 will reveal additional evidence.Trial Registration: At  http://irct.ir/  as IRCT20120718010333N5 on December 25, 2019.

Background and Aims: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with a decreased risk of developing a variety of chronic diseases that are comorbidities in COVID-19 patients. However, its association to the severity and symptoms of COVID-19 are still unknown. This study aimed to examine the association between adherence to the MD pattern and COVID-19 severity and symptoms in Iranian hospitalized patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 250 COVID-19 patients aged 18 to 65 were examined. We employed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to obtain data on dietary intake of participants in the year prior to their COVID-19 diagnosis. COVID-19 severity was determined using the National Institutes of Health's Coronavirus Disease 2019 report. Additionally, symptoms associated with COVID-19, inflammatory markers, and other variables were evaluated. The scoring method proposed by Trichopoulou et al. was used to assess adherence to the MD. Results: The participants' mean age was 44.1 ± 12.1 years, and 46% of them had severe COVID-19. Patients who adhered more closely to the MD had lower serum C-reactive protein levels (7.80 vs. 37.36 mg/l) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (14.08 vs. 42.65 mm/h). Those with the highest MD score were 77% less likely to have severe COVID-19 after controlling for confounding variables. The MD score was also found to be inversely associated with COVID-19 symptoms, including dyspnea, cough, fever, chills, weakness, myalgia, nausea and vomiting, and sore throat. Conclusion: Higher adherence to the MD was associated with a decreased likelihood of COVID-19 severity and symptoms, as well as a shorter duration of hospitalization and convalescence, and inflammatory biomarkers.

Background and Aims: Magnesium is an anti-inflammatory mineral that plays a role in the innate immune system, and the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle warrants additional attention in COVID-19. This study examined the association between magnesium intake and COVID-19 severity and related symptoms in hospitalized patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done enrolling 250 COVID-19 patients aged 18 to 65 years. A validated 168-item online food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary magnesium intake. COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines were used to determine COVID-19 severity, and symptoms were evaluated using a standard questionnaire. Crude and adjusted analyses were performed (Model 1: age, sex, and energy intake; Model 2: Model 1 + physical activity, supplements, corticosteroids, and antiviral drugs; Model 3: Model 2 + body mass index). Results: The mean age of participants was 44.1 ± 12.1 years, and 46% of them had severe COVID-19. Patients at the highest tertile of dietary magnesium intake had lower serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers, including CRP (11.8 ± 2.2 vs. 29.5 ± 2.1 mg/L, p < 0.001) and ESR (15.8 ± 2.4 vs. 34.7 ± 2.4 mm/hr, p < 0.001), than those at the lowest tertile. After controlling for potential confounders, we observed that a higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a lower odds of severe COVID-19 (OR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.15-0.70). Also, we found a significant inverse association between dietary magnesium intake and odds of COVID-19 symptoms. Conclusion: We found that higher intake of dietary magnesium was inversely associated with COVID-19 severity and symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Morus Alba extract, despite its special properties, has been less studied in terms of its effects on metabolic profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study was carried out to determine the effects of Morus Alba extract, known as white mulberry, on liver enzymes, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, insulin metabolism and lipid profiles in patients with T2DM. METHODS: The current randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted among 60 patients with T2DM. Subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive either Morus Alba extract (300 mg) (n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) twice a day. Fasting blood samples were collected at the baseline and 12 weeks after intervention to quantify related markers. RESULTS: Morus Alba extract intake significantly decreased insulin (P = 0.026) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.001), and significantly increased HDL-cholesterol concentrations (P = 0.001) compared with the placebo. However, Morus Alba extract intake did not affect other metabolic profiles. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study shown that the 12-week administration of Morus Alba extract among subjects with T2DM had beneficial effects on HDL-cholesterol, insulin and MDA levels, but did not affect other metabolic profiles. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to determine the effects of probiotic plus selenium supplementation on glycemic control and lipid profils in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted among 60 patients with GDM. Participants were randomly allocated into 2 groups to intake either placebo (n = 30) or probiotic (8 × 109 CFU/day) plus 200 µg/day selenium (n = 30) for 6 weeks. RESULTS: Selenium plus probiotic supplementation significantly reduced fasting glucose (-4.5 ± 5.8 vs. -1.2 ± 4.3 mg/dL, P = 0.004), insulin concentrations (-1.4 ± 1.7 vs. -0.2 ± 1.1 µIU/mL, P = 0.002) and insulin resistance (-0.4 ± 0.5 vs. -0.1 ± 0.3, P = 0.001), and significantly increased insulin sensitivity (+0.008 ± 0.009 vs. +0.001 ± 0.006, P = 0.002) compared with the placebo. Co-supplementation also significantly decreased triglycerides (-16.6 ± 44.4 vs. +14.9 ± 26.4 mg/dL, P = 0.005), total cholesterol (-24.2 ± 29.2 vs. +4.5 ± 18.7 mg/dL, P = 0.001), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (-20.8 ± 30.8 vs. -0.2 ± 16.8 mg/dL, P = 0.006) compared with the placebo. Moreover, co-supplementation increased gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) (P = 0.003) and LDL-receptor (P = 0.001) in the peripheral blood mono-nuclear cells of the participants with GDM. CONCLUSIONS: Probiotic plus selenium supplementation to patients with GDM for six weeks had beneficial effects on glycemic status, lipid profiles, and PPAR-γ and LDLR expression. However, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were not significantly changed.

Cell membrane cloaking technique is bioinspired nanotechnology that takes advantage of naturally derived design cues for surface modification of nanoparticles. Unlike modification with synthetic materials, cell membranes can replicate complex physicochemical properties and biomimetic functions of the parent cell source. This technique indeed has the potential to greatly augment existing nanotherapeutic platforms. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of engineered cell membrane-based nanotherapeutics for targeted drug delivery and biomedical applications and discuss the challenges and opportunities of cell membrane cloaking techniques for clinical translation.
