ABSTRACT

Currently, the actual mechanical properties of carbon fibers (CF) differ significantly from the theoretical values. This is primarily attributed to significant limitations imposed by structural defects, greatly hindering the widespread application of CF. To solve this problem, we used in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and γ rays to modulate the core-shell of CF in this study. For the surface structure of CF during the process of γ irradiation, the organic structure within ZIF-8 gradually degrades and forms a cross-linking structure with the surface defects of the CF. This process significantly enhances the binding strength between inorganic material from the postdecomposition of ZIF-8 and the carbon layer on the surface of CF, repairing the surface defects. For the internal structure of CF, γ irradiation can improve the orientation of the internal micropores of CF and increase the degree of internal graphitization of CF. In this paper, an in-depth analysis of CF before and after repair was conducted by using characterization techniques such as nanoindentation and ultrasmall angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). Compared to unmodified CF, its mechanical properties improved by approximately 19.99%, which exceeds that in approximately 95% of similar works in the field.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: China published its inaugural national heat-health action plan (HHAP) in 2023, but the mortality burden associated with temperatures exceeding the heat alert thresholds specified by this HHAP (maximum temperatures >35, 37, or 40 °C) remains unknown. We aimed to estimate the historical and future mortality burden associated with temperatures above the heat alert thresholds of the Chinese national HHAP. METHODS: We conducted time-series analyses to estimate the mortality burden associated with temperatures exceeding the three heat alert thresholds from 2016 to 2019 in Jiangsu Province (including 13 cities, population ∼80.7 million), China. A quasi-Poisson regression in conjunction with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to estimate the dose-response association between maximum temperature and mortality risk from 2016 to 2019, adjusting for potential covariates. We then projected the future mortality burden associated with temperatures exceeding these thresholds under three distinct levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios via scenario shared socioeconomic pathways [SSP] 1-2.6 (low), SSP2-4.5 (intermediate), and SSP5-8.5 (high), respectively, by assuming that there will be no adaptation to heat. Climate scenarios derived from the General Circulation Model (GCM) under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) were used. RESULTS: From 2016 to 2019, temperatures above 35 °C were associated with 0.51% of mortality, including 0.40% associated with 35 °C-37 °C and 0.11% associated with >37 °C. Heat-related mortality risk was most prominent in those who were single/divorced/widowed and had <10 years of education. Under SSP2-4.5, compared with the 2020s, the excess mortality associated with >37 °C would increase by 1.4 times in the 2050s and 1.7 times in the 2090s. Under SSP5-8.5, the annual number of days with maximum temperature >37 °C would approximately double every 20 years (67 days annually in the 2090s). Consequently, compared with the 2020s, the excess mortality associated with >37 °C would increase by 2.8 times in the 2050s and 18.4 times in the 2090s. CONCLUSION: Significant mortality risk is associated with temperatures above the lowest heat alert threshold of the Chinese national HHAP (35 °C). If the high GHG emission scenario occurred, the annual number of days and excess mortality associated with maximum temperatures >37 °C would largely increase in the coming decades.

ABSTRACT

Aging and deterioration of building structures have been persistent concerns in the field of engineering. To address these challenges while supporting modern green and sustainable development goals, this study introduces an innovative reinforcement system that employs steel textiles as the primary reinforcing material. The steel textiles were engineered by optimizing the compatibility between steel fibers and a hot melt adhesive (HMA). These textiles were then used to reinforce concrete structures, creating a steel textile-reinforced mortar (STRM)-reinforced concrete system. The study also examined the durability of the steel textiles and the interfacial bonding performance within the STRM-reinforced concrete system. The results showed that the compatibility between steel fibers and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (HMA-2) is better, and the steel textiles prepared with it have superior hydrothermal and corrosion resistance. After the system had been maintained for 28 days, the overall flexural strength of the STRM-reinforced concrete system was increased by 100.03%, the interfacial shear load by 49.54%, the interfacial shear stiffness by 61.2%, and the positive tensile bond performance by 26.1%. This proves that STRM has a good reinforcement effect on the concrete reinforcement system.

ABSTRACT

Dual-pixel (DP) imaging sensors are getting more popularly adopted by modern cameras. A DP camera captures a pair of images in a single snapshot by splitting each pixel in half. Several previous studies show how to recover depth information by treating the DP pair as an approximate stereo pair. However, dual-pixel disparity occurs only in image regions with defocus blur which is unlike classic stereo disparity. Heavy defocus blur in DP pairs affects the performance of depth estimation approaches based on matching. Therefore, we treat the blur removal and the depth estimation as a joint problem. We investigate the formation of the DP pair, which links the blur and depth information, rather than blindly removing the blur effect. We propose a mathematical DP model that can improve depth estimation by the blur. This exploration motivated us to propose our previous work, an end-to-end DDDNet (DP-based Depth and Deblur Network), which jointly estimates depth and restores the image in a supervised fashion. However, collecting the ground-truth (GT) depth map for the DP pair is challenging and limits the depth estimation potential of the DP sensor. Therefore, we propose an extension of the DDDNet, called WDDNet (Weakly-supervised Depth and Deblur Network), which includes an efficient reblur solver that does not require GT depth maps for training. To achieve this, we convert all-in-focus images into supervisory signals for unsupervised depth estimation in our WDDNet. We jointly estimate an all-in-focus image and a disparity map, then use a Reblur and Fstack module to regularize the disparity estimation and image restoration. We conducted extensive experiments on synthetic and real data to demonstrate the competitive performance of our method when compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) supervised approaches. Index Terms-Dual-pixel Sensor, Weakly-supervised, Depth Estimation, Deblur and Reblu.

ABSTRACT

The microstructure plays a crucial role in the manufacturing and application of polyacrylonitrile fibers, which serve as precursors for carbon fibers. Synchrotron radiation small angle x-ray scattering (SR-SAXS) is a non-destructive and precise technique for analyzing fiber structures. This study employed one-dimensional SR-SAXS mapping to extract key structural parameters such as periodicity, lamellae thickness, and the extent of amorphous regions, as well as the directional orientation in γ-irradiated, pre-oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibers. The analysis revealed a three-layered structure comprising a surface skin, a transitional layer, and a central core. Notably, the lamellar thickness exhibits a "U"-shaped distribution, while the long-period structures, amorphous regions, and orientational properties demonstrate a "wave-like" pattern. Within this structure, the skin exhibits a higher level of orientation, with the orientation decreasing progressively from the skin toward the core layer. The structure of the layered crystal was further corroborated by the morphological analysis. In addition, molecular simulations were performed to propose the mechanisms underlying the formation of this layered structure. This comprehensive investigation using SR-SAXS and one-dimensional mapping provides detailed insights into the microstructural and morphological characteristics of polyacrylonitrile fibers, which can inform future advancements in material processing and refinement techniques for the production of advanced fibers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine the safety and effectiveness of proactive tracheoplasty for pediatric ring-sling complex. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from 304 children who were diagnosed with a ring-sling complex and underwent surgery at 3 cardiac centers in China between January 2010 and June 2023. The children were categorized into 3 surgical groups: concurrent sling and tracheal surgery (group A; n = 258), staged sling and tracheal surgery (group B; n = 25), and sling-only surgery (group C; n = 21). We compared perioperative clinical characteristics, tracheal morphology changes, and outcomes across the 3 groups. RESULTS: The median age of the children was 1.2 years (interquartile range, [IQR], 0.7-1.9 years). The anomalous tracheobronchial arborization rates were higher in group A (52.5%) and group B (60.0%) compared to group C (15.0%). The preoperative narrow-wide ratio (NWR) was lower in groups A and B than in group C, with values of 0.44 (IQR, 0.35-0.52), 0.44 (IQR, 0.33-0.59), and 0.68 (IQR, 0.54-0.72), respectively (P < .001). Preoperative subcarina angles were similar among the groups (P = .54). After specific surgeries, the NWR and subcarina angle were improved significantly in groups A and B but not in group C. There were 7 in-hospital deaths and 2 postdischarge deaths. Respiratory symptoms improved in groups A and B, but 7 children in group C remained in respiratory dysfunction. Six children presented with residual stenosis of the left pulmonary artery. CONCLUSIONS: Concurrent sling and tracheal surgeries for children with the ring-sling complex are safe and effective and are especially preferable for those with NWR ≤0.6, long-segment or diffuse tracheal stenosis, anomalous tracheobronchial arborization, and pronounced respiratory symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To identify the long-term spatiotemporal trend of ozone-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) burden by sex and country and to explore potential drivers. Methods: We retrieved data of ozone-related COPD death and disability adjusted life year (DALY) from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. We used a linear regression of natural logarithms of age-standardized rates (ASRs) with calendar year to examine the trends in ASRs and a panel regression to identify country-level factors associated with the trends. Results: Global ozone-attributable COPD deaths increased from 117,114 to 208,342 among men and from 90,265 to 156,880 among women between 1990 and 2019. Although ASRs of ozone-related COPD death and DALY declined globally, they increased in low and low-middle Socio-demographic Index (SDI) regions, with faster rise in women. Elevated average maximum temperature was associated with higher ozone-attributable COPD burden, while more green space was associated with lower burden. Conclusion: More efforts are needed in low and low-middle SDI regions, particularly for women, to diminish inter-country inequality in ozone-attributable COPD. Global warming may exacerbate the burden. Expanding green space may mitigate the burden.

ABSTRACT

Herein we report a wearable sweat sensor of a Janus fabric based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology, mainly detecting the two important metabolites glucose and lactate. Janus fabric is composed of electrospinning PU on a piece of medical gauze (cotton), working as the unidirectional moisture transport component (R = 1305%) to collect and transfer sweat efficiently. SERS tags with different structures act as the probe to recognize and detect the glucose and lactate in high sensitivity. Core-shell structured gold nanorods with DTNB inside (AuNRs@DTNB@Au) are used to detect lactate, while gold nanorods with MPBA (AuNRs@MPBA) are used to detect glucose. Through the characteristic SERS information, two calibration functions were established for the concentration determination of glucose and lactate. The concentrations of glucose and lactate in sweat of a 23 years volunteer during three-stage interval running are tested to be 95.5, 53.2, 30.5 µM and 4.9, 13.9, 10.8 mM, indicating the glucose (energy) consumption during exercise and the rapid accumulation of lactate at the early stage accompanied by the subsequent relief. As expected, this sensing system is able to provide a novel strategy for effective acquisition and rapid detection of essential biomarkers in sweat.

ABSTRACT

Red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is the most cultured freshwater crayfish species. It attracts significant research attention due to its considerable economic importance. However, the limited availability of genome information has impeded further genetic studies and breeding programs. By utilizing Illumina, PacBio, and Hi-C sequencing technologies, we present a more comprehensive and continuous chromosome-level assembly for P. clarkii than the published one. The final genome size is 4.03 Gb, consisting of 2,358 scaffolds with a N50 of 42.87 Mb. Notably, 3.68 Gb, corresponding to 91.42% of the genome, was anchored to 94 chromosomes. The assembly comprises 70.64% repetitive sequences, including 5.21% tandem repeats and 65.40% transposable elements. Additionally, a total of 4,456 non-coding RNAs and 28,852 protein-coding genes were predicted in the P. clarkii genome, with 96.26% of the genes were annotated. This high-quality genome assembly not only represents a significant improvement for the genome of P. clarkii and provides insights into the unique genome evolution, but also offers valuable information for developing freshwater aquaculture and accelerating genetic breeding.

ABSTRACT

The uneven formation of lithium dendrites during electroplating/stripping leads to a decrease in the utilization of active lithium, resulting in poor cycling stability and posing safety hazards to the battery. Herein, introducing a 3D continuously interconnected zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF808) network into a polyethylene oxide polymer matrix establishes a synergistic mechanism for lithium dendrite inhibition. The 3D MOF808 network maintains its large pore structure, facilitating increased lithium salt accommodation, and expands anion adsorption at unsaturated metal sites through its diverse large-space cage structure, thereby promoting the flow of Li+. Infrared-Raman and synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering results demonstrate that the transport behavior of lithium salt ion clusters at the MOF/polymer interface verifies the increased local Li+ flux concentration, thereby raising the mobility number of Li+ to 0.42 and ensuring uniform Li+ flux distribution, leading to dendrite-free and homogeneous Li+ deposition. Furthermore, nanoindentation tests reveal that the high modulus and elastic recovery of MOF-based polymer electrolytes contribute to forming a robust, dendrite-resistant interface. Consequently, in symmetric battery systems, the system exhibits minimal overpotential, merely 35 mV, while maintaining stable cycling for over 1800 h, achieving low-overpotential lithium deposition. Moreover, it retains redox stability under high voltages up to 5.3 V.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Air pollution poses a significant threat to global public health. While broad mitigation policies exist, an understanding of the economic consequences, both in terms of health benefits and mitigation costs, remains lacking. This study systematically reviewed the existing economic implications of air pollution control strategies worldwide. METHODS: A predefined search strategy, without limitations on region or study design, was employed to search the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and CEA registry databases for studies from their inception to November 2023 using keywords such as "cost-benefit analyses", "air pollution", and "particulate matter". Focus was placed on studies that specifically considered the health benefits of air pollution control strategies. The evidence was summarized by pollution control strategy and reported using principle economic evaluation measurements such as net benefits and benefit-cost ratios. RESULTS: The search yielded 104 studies that met the inclusion criteria. A total of 75, 21, and 8 studies assessed the costs and benefits of outdoor, indoor, and mixed control strategies, respectively, of which 54, 15, and 3 reported that the benefits of the control strategy exceeded the mitigation costs. Source reduction (n = 42) and end-of-pipe treatments (n = 15) were the most commonly employed pollution control methodologies. The association between particulate matter (PM) and mortality was the most widely assessed exposure-effect relationship and had the largest health gains (n = 42). A total of 32 studies employed a broader benefits framework, examining the impacts of air pollution control strategies on the environment, ecology, and society. Of these, 31 studies reported partially or entirely positive economic evidence. However, despite overwhelming evidence in support of these strategies, the studies also highlighted some policy flaws concerning equity, optimization, and uncertainty characterization. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly 70% of the reviewed studies reported that the economic benefits of implementing air pollution control strategies outweighed the relative costs. This was primarily due to the improved mortality and morbidity rates associated with lowering PM levels. In addition to health benefits, air pollution control strategies were also associated with other environmental and social benefits, strengthening the economic case for implementation. However, future air pollution control strategy designs will need to address some of the existing policy limitations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) remains one of the most severe complications after pancreatic surgery. The methods for predicting pancreatic fistula are limited. We aimed to investigate the predictive value of body composition parameters measured by preoperative bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) on the development of POPF. METHODS: A total of 168 consecutive patients undergoing pancreatic surgery from March 2022 to December 2022 at our institution were included in the study and randomly assigned at a 3:2 ratio to the training group and the validation group. All data, including previously reported risk factors for POPF and parameters measured by BIA, were collected. Risk factors were analyzed by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis. A prediction model was established to predict the development of POPF based on these parameters. RESULTS: POPF occurred in 41 of 168 (24.4%) patients. In the training group of 101 enrolled patients, visceral fat area (VFA) (odds ratio [OR] = 1.077, P = 0.001) and fat mass index (FMI) (OR = 0.628, P = 0.027) were found to be independently associated with POPF according to multivariable analysis. A prediction model including VFA and FMI was established to predict the development of POPF with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.753. The efficacy of the prediction model was also confirmed in the internal validation group (AUC 0.785, 95% CI 0.659-0.911). CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative assessment of body fat distribution by BIA can predict the risk of POPF after pancreatic surgery.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hypertrophy ligamentum flavum is a prevalent chronic spinal condition that affects middle-aged and older adults. However, the molecular pathways behind this disease are not well comprehended. Objective: The objective of this work is to implement bioinformatics techniques in order to identify crucial biological markers and immune infiltration that are linked to hypertrophy ligamentum flavum. Further, the study aims to experimentally confirm the molecular mechanisms that underlie the hypertrophy ligamentum flavum. Methods: The corresponding gene expression profiles (GSE113212) were selected from a comprehensive gene expression database. The gene dataset for hypertrophy ligamentum flavum was acquired from GeneCards. A network of interactions between proteins was created, and an analysis of functional enrichment was conducted using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) databases. An study of hub genes was performed to evaluate the infiltration of immune cells in patient samples compared to tissues from the control group. Finally, samples of the ligamentum flavum were taken with the purpose of validating the expression of important genes in a clinical setting. Results: Overall, 27 hub genes that were differently expressed were found through molecular biology. The hub genes were found to be enriched in immune response, chemokine-mediated signaling pathways, inflammation, ossification, and fibrosis processes, as demonstrated by GO and KEGG studies. The main signaling pathways involved include the TNF signaling pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, and TGF-ß signaling pathway. An examination of immunocell infiltration showed notable disparities in B cells (naïve and memory) and activated T cells (CD4 memory) between patients with hypertrophic ligamentum flavum and the control group of healthy individuals. The in vitro validation revealed markedly elevated levels of ossification and fibrosis-related components in the hypertrophy ligamentum flavum group, as compared to the normal group. Conclusion: The TGF-ß signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, and related hub genes play crucial roles in the progression of ligamentum flavum hypertrophic. Our study may guide future research on fibrosis of the ligamentum flavum.

ABSTRACT

Groundwater resources serve as the primary source of water in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China, where scarcity of water resources constrains the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. As a typical rainfed agricultural area, the agro-pastoral ecotone in Inner Mongolia is entirely dependent on groundwater for agricultural irrigation. Due to the substantial groundwater consumption of irrigated farmland, groundwater levels have been progressively declining. To obtain a sustainable irrigation pattern that significantly conserves water, this study faces the challenge of unclear water transport relationships among water, soil, and crops, undefined water cycle mechanism in typical irrigation units, and water use efficiency, which was not assessed. Therefore, this paper, based on in situ experimental observations and daily meteorological data in 2022-2023, utilized the DSSAT model to explore the growth processes of potato, oat, alfalfa, and sunflower, the soil water dynamics, the water balance, and water use efficiency, analyzed over a typical irrigation area. The results indicated that the simulation accuracy of the DSSAT model was ARE < 10%, nRMSE/% < 10%, and R2 ≥ 0.85. The consumption of the soil moisture during the rapid growth stage for the potatoes, oats, alfalfa, and sunflower was 7-13% more than that during the other periods, and the yield was 67,170, 3345, 6529, and 4020 kg/ha, respectively. The soil evaporation of oat, potato, alfalfa, and sunflower accounted for 18-22%, 78-82%; 57-68%, and 32-43%, and transpiration accounted for 40-44%, 56-60%, 45-47%, and 53-55% of ETa (333.8 mm-369.2 mm, 375.2 mm-414.2 mm, 415.7 mm-453.7 mm, and 355.0 mm-385.6 mm), respectively. It was advised that irrigation water could be appropriately reduced to decrease ineffective water consumption. The water use efficiency and irrigation water use efficiency for potatoes was at the maximum amount, ranging from 16.22 to 16.62 kg/m3 and 8.61 to 10.81 kg/m3, respectively, followed by alfalfa, sunflowers, and oats. For the perspective of water productivity, it was recommended that potatoes could be extensively cultivated, alfalfa planted appropriately, and oats and sunflowers planted less. The findings of this study provided a theoretical basis for efficient water resource use in the agro-pastoral ecotone of Northern China.

ABSTRACT

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is commonly used in abdominal wall repair due to its ability to reduce the risk of organ damage, infections and other complications. However, the PP mesh often leads to adhesion formation and does not promote functional tissue repair. In this study, we synthesized one kind of aldehyde Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSPA) modified chitosan (CS) hydrogel based on Schiff base reaction. The hydrogel exhibited a porous network structure, a highly hydrophilic surface and good biocompatibility. We wrapped the PP mesh inside the hydrogel and evaluated the performance of the resulting composites in a bilateral 1 × 1.5 cm abdominal wall defect model in rats. The results of gross observation, histological staining and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated the positive impact of the CS hydrogel on anti-adhesion and wound healing effects. Notably, the addition of BSPA to the CS hydrogel further improved the performance of the composites in vivo, promoting wound healing by enhancing collagen deposition and capillary rearrangement. This study suggested that the BSPA-modified CS hydrogel significantly promoted the anti-adhesion, anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenesis properties of PP meshes during the healing process. Overall, this work offers a novel approach to the design of abdominal wall repair patches.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorene and fullerene are representative two-dimensional (2D) and zero-dimensional (0D) nanomaterials respectively, constructing their heterodimensional hybrid not only complements their physiochemical properties but also extends their applications via synergistic interactions. This is however challenging because of their diversities in dimension and chemical reactivity, and theoretical studies predicted that it is improbable to directly bond C60 onto the surface of phosphorene due to their strong repulsion. Here, we develop a facile electrosynthesis method to synthesize the first phosphorene-fullerene hybrid featuring fullerene surface bonding via P-C bonds. Few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) obtained from electrochemical exfoliation react with C60 2- dianion prepared by electroreduction of C60, fulfilling formation of the "improbable" phosphorene-fullerene hybrid (BPNS-s-C60). Theoretical results reveal that the energy barrier for formation of [BPNS-s-C60]2- intermediate is significantly decreased by 1.88 eV, followed by an oxidization reaction to generate neutral BPNS-s-C60 hybrid. Surface bonding of C60 molecules not only improves significantly the ambient stability of BPNSs, but also boosts dramatically the visible light and near-infrared (NIR) photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates, reaching 1466 and 1039 µmol h-1 g-1 respectively, which are both the highest values among all reported BP-based metal-free photocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

Background: Observational studies have suggested associations between functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and variations in the cerebral cortex. However, the causality of these relationships remains unclear, confounded by anxiety and depression. To clarify these causal relationships and explore the mediating roles of anxiety and depression, we applied univariate, multivariable, and mediation Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. Method: We utilized genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the FinnGen database and the ENIGMA consortium, identifying genetic variants associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia (FD), and cerebral cortex structures. Data on anxiety and depression came from FinnGen and a large meta-analysis. Utilizing a bidirectional univariate MR approach, we explored correlations between FD, IBS, and cortex variations. Then, independent effects were assessed through multivariable MR. A meta-analysis of these results, incorporating data from two cohorts, aimed to increase precision. We also explored the potential mediating roles of anxiety and depression. Results: Our findings indicate a negative causal correlation between FD and the thickness of the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) across both global and regional adjustments (ß = -0.142, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.209 to-0.074, P.FDR = 0.004; ß = -0.112, 95%CI: -0.163 to-0.006, P.FDR = 0.003) and a positive causal correlation with the globally adjusted thickness of the superior frontal gyrus (SFG) (ß = 0.107, 95%CI: 0.062 to 0.153, P.FDR = 0.001). The causal correlation with the rACC persisted after multiple variable adjustments (ß = -0.137, 95% CI: -0.187 to-0.087, P.FDR = 1.81 × 10-5; ß = -0.109, 95%CI: -0.158 to-0.06, P.FDR = 0.002). A significant causal association was found between globally adjusted surface area of the caudal anterior cingulate cortex (cACC) and IBS (odds ratio = 1.267, 95%CI: 1.128 to 1.424, P.FDR = 0.02). The analysis showed that neither anxiety nor depression mediated the relationship between FGIDs and cerebral cortex structures. Conclusion: Our research provides significant MR evidence of a bidirectional causal relationship between FGIDs and the cerebral cortex structures. This evidence not only confirms the two-way communication along the brain-gut axis but also illuminates the underlying pathophysiology, paving the way for identifying potential therapeutic approaches.
