ABSTRACT

This study aimed to identify key long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients and to identify relevant pathological mechanisms of AMD development. We identified 407 differentially expressed mRNAs and 429 differentially expressed lncRNAs in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and retina in the macular region of AMD patients versus controls (P < 0.05 and |log2FC| > 0.585) from GSE135092. A total of 14 key differentially expressed mRNAs were obtained through external data validation from GSE115828. A miRNA-mRNA and miRNA-lncRNA network containing 52 lncRNA nodes, 49 miRNA nodes, 14 mRNA nodes and 351 edges was constructed via integrated analysis of these components. Finally, the LINC00276-miR-619-5p-IFIT3 axis was identified via protein-protein network analysis. In the t-BH-induced ARPE-19 senescent cell model, LINC00276 and IFIT3 were downregulated. Overexpression of LINC00276 could accelerate cell migration in combination with IFIT3 upregulation. This compelling finding suggests that LINC00276 plays an influential role in the progression of AMD, potentially through modulating senescence processes, thereby setting a foundation for future investigative efforts to verify this relationship.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To describe clinical features and intraoperative findings of the patients with exotropia who presented mild V-pattern or vertical deviation, and to investigate the surgical outcomes of anatomical relocation of inferiorly displaced lateral rectus (LR) muscle insertion. METHODS: Detailed ophthalmological evaluations were obtained in 42 consecutive patients, and the horizontal rectus muscle insertions were detected intraoperatively. The displaced insertion of LR muscle was corrected accompanied with classic recession-resection procedure. RESULTS: The inferiorly displaced LR muscle insertions were detected in 19 patients (Group A), while the remaining 23 patients (Group B) had normal insertions. The mean distance of displaced insertion from the normal position was 2.92 ± 1.05 mm (range: 1.0-4.0). Mild V-pattern was more common in Group A (78.9%, 15/19) than Group B (47.8%, 11/23), and the magnitude of V-pattern in Group A (6.16 ± 3.91 PD) was also greater than Group B (3.43 ± 3.92 PD). The fundus extorsions of the affected eyes (9.68 ± 4.77 °) were greater than the contralateral eyes (5.91 ± 5.82 °) in Group A. At the 2 months follow-up, mild V-pattern and mild vertical deviation were corrected by upward transposition. The significant correlations were identified between the pre-operative misalignments and the amounts of misalignments correction. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of the cases with mild V-pattern or vertical deviation resulted from the inferiorly displaced LR muscle insertion, so the intraoperative exploration of the LR muscle insertion is strongly suggested. Upward transposition may effectively correct both the mild V-pattern and vertical deviation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of team-interaction training has been proven. However, there is a lack of objective and accurate evaluation tools for the impact and benefits of team-interaction training on participants. This study aims to develop and validate a tool for exploring undergraduates' perception of benefits in team-interaction. It can further insight into the perceived benefits of team-interaction training for undergraduates and evaluates the effectiveness of the course, and provides a reference point for the development of university team-interaction training courses. METHODS: This study was conducted in three stages. Phase 1 consisted of item generation: A theoretical framework was crafted based on social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, and sports performance models. Fifty-two items were generated based on the theoretical framework, participant interviews, and literature review. After Delphi consultation and pilot tests, 39 items moved on to Phase 2. Phase 2 consisted of forming a preliminary questionnaire: the contents to be included were selected through item analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). A total of 40 classes were selected for EFA. After EFA, a three-factor structure with 25 items was formed. The third stage tested psychometric properties through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), test-retest reliability, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency. RESULTS: The final PBTITQ consisted of 23 items, each rated from "1" (fully disagree) to "5" (fully agree). EFA and CFA supported the three-factor structure of PBTITQ, which included Cohesion, Communication, and Efficiency. The Cronbach's alpha of the PBTITQ was 0.90, the test-retest reliability was 0.88, and the split-half reliability was 0.81. PBTITQ significantly correlated with the GEQ (r = 0.808, p < 0.05) and the TDM (r = 0.796, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The PBTITQ is an effective tool for assessing the perceived benefits of team-interaction training among undergraduates.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features of a macrophage-like cell (MLC) obtained by en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) in retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Methods: The study involved 36 patients with treatment-naïve unilateral acute RVO, including 21 branch RVO (BRVO) and 15 central RVO. Vessel density and macular thickness were quantified using OCT angiography. A 3-µm en face OCT slab on the inner limiting membrane in the optic nerve head (ONH) region or macular region was used to visualize the MLCs. The MLCs were binarized and quantified using a semiautomated method. The unaffected fellow eyes served as the control group. Results: The morphology of MLCs appeared larger and plumper in RVO eyes. The mean MLC density in the ONH and macular regions was 2.46 times and 2.86 times higher than their fellow eyes, respectively (p < 0.001). The macular MLC density of the occlusive region was significantly lower than that of the unaffected region in BRVO (p = 0.01). The ONH and macular MLC densities in the non-perfused region were significantly lower than those in the perfused region in all RVO eyes (p < 0.001). The ONH MLC density in RVO eyes was negatively correlated with radial peripapillary capillary vessel density (r = -0.413, p = 0.012). Both ONH and macular MLC densities were positively correlated with macular thickness (r = 0.505, p = 0.002; r = 0.385, p = 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: The increased density and changes of morphology characterized by OCT may indicate generalized activation and aggregation of MLCs in RVO. More MLCs are recruited in the perfused region rather than the non-perfused region. RVO eyes with a higher density of MLCs tend to suffer from the thicker macula.
