ABSTRACT

The synthesis, enhancement, and maintenance of magnetite-based catalyst nanoparticles (NPs) are important for photocatalytic activity and recovery rates. We used a sodium borohydride (NaBH4) calcination method to modify MnFe2O4 nanoparticles to optimize their performance in the photocatalytic oxidation of 2,5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The results indicated a 94% increase in photocatalytic efficiency, while magnetic assessments performed using a vibrating sample magnetometer showed an 8.9% improvement in magnetic properties without degradation. These findings show the dual benefits of increased photocatalytic performance with strong magnetic properties, which are important for the application and reusability of photocatalysts. The recycling of these photocatalysts reduces secondary pollution and increases the process cost-effectiveness. These results contribute to the solution of problems with the use of photocatalytic materials.

ABSTRACT

This study entailed the synthesis of Ru nanocatalyst decorated on Nb-grafted SBA-15. A Nb-grafted SBA-15 support with varying Nb contents was utilized as a support for the Ru nanoparticles. The effect of Nb grafting on the immobilized Ru nanoparticle catalyst was systematically investigated, and its catalytic performance in the synthesis of furandicarboxylic acid using 5-hydroxymethylfurfural under base-free reaction conditions was evaluated. The results indicate the increased productivity of the Ru@Nb-grafted SBA-15 catalyst with a yield exceeding 95%, representing a significant advancement in catalysis. This study also affords insights into the complex relationship between the catalytic activity and selectivity and its unique surface attributes. Moreover, acidic sites were created, and the electron density within the active sites was modulated by monomeric Nb oxide species on the SBA-15. Additionally, the role of high-electron-density Ru atoms in facilitating the efficient adsorption and activation of the reactant, resulting in enhanced catalytic efficacy, was highlighted.

ABSTRACT

Fermentation of salted shrimp involves the interaction of multiple factors. However, studies of the effects of shrimp variety and fermentation temperature on metabolites generated during fermentation are limited. Therefore, we investigated the effects of the shrimp variety, fermentation temperature, and fermentation period on the composition of fermented salted shrimp. Four different varieties of salted shrimp, namely, Detteugijeot (SSA), Red shrimp jeot (SSB), Chujeot (SSC), and Yukjeot (SSD), were prepared and stored at 5 and 10 °C for 5 months. The pH values ranged from 6.71 to 6.99, with SSD showing the lowest pH at both temperatures. Although total nitrogen content remained relatively constant, amino nitrogen exhibited an upward trend after 2 months and was particularly increased at 10 °C. This increase was attributed to variations in microorganisms and enzymes in the salted shrimp. Except for proline, citrulline, and ornithine, amino acid levels increased during fermentation with the highest amounts detected in SSA. Additionally, the levels of glutamic acid and branched-chain amino acids were found to be sensitive to fermentation temperature. Amino acid levels were apparently affected by species-specific metabolic pathways of the microorganisms present in each salted shrimp. Compared to the other varieties, SSB had significantly higher contents of adenosine triphosphate and hypoxanthine. A high hypoxanthine content could contribute to increased bitterness and an umami taste profile. Furthermore, the correlation between salted shrimp and metabolites was unique in SSB, whereas partial clustering was observed between the SSA and SSC.

ABSTRACT

Ellagic acid glucoside was synthesized via transglucosylation using sucrose and glucansucrase derived from Leuconostoc mesenteroides B-512 FMCM. After such enzymatic synthesis, the product was purified by 50% ethyl acetate fraction and C18 column chromatography. Modification of ellagic acid glucoside was verified by LC-MS/MS at m/z 485.1 (M + Na)- and m/z 531.1 (M + 3Na)-. The yield of ellagic acid glucoside was 69% (3.47 mM) by response surface methodology using 150 mM sucrose, 300 mU/mL glucansucrase, and 5 mM ellagic acid. The synthesized ellagic acid glucoside showed improved water solubility, up to 58% higher brain nerve cell (SH-SY5Y) protective effect, threefold higher cortisol reducing effect, and fourfold stronger inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) than ellagic acid. These results indicate that ellagic acid glucoside could be used as a neuroprotective agent.

ABSTRACT

Methods for the rapid removal of chemical warfare agents are of critical importance. In this work, a porous activated carbon material (C-PAC) was prepared from chitosan flakes via single-step potassium carbonate (K2CO3) activation for the prompt adsorption of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). C-PAC samples were prepared using different carbonization temperatures (350, 550, and 750 °C) at a constant K2CO3/chitosan ratio (1:2) and using different activator ratios (K2CO3/chitosan ratios of 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3) at 750 °C. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of preparation conditions on the adsorption capacities of the various C-PAC materials for DMMP under ambient conditions (25 °C). Notably, for the C-PAC material prepared at 750 °C using a K2CO3/chitosan ratio of 1:2, the DMMP adsorption was saturated at approximately 412 mg·g-1 carbon after 48 h. The good performance of this material makes it a potential candidate for use in remedial applications or protective gear.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Wilms tumor is one of general solid cancers that occur in children, which carries a death rate of 7-8 in a million. The cure rate of Wilms tumor in the recent 30 years has dramatically been improved, but a proper remedy is still not prepared enough in terms of application in tumor therapy upon recurrence after radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy. We present an integrative medical remedy - hyperthermia and thymosin-α1 treatment focused on herbal remedy - since there have been cases in which this remedy contributed to remission in the liver-transferred part in the 4th phase of Wilms tumor and stable maintenance of metastatic lung lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient, a female Korean mongoloid outpatient, was treated from October 25, 2014, to July 22, 2015. The herbal remedy consisted of 8 ml inhalation of Soram nebulizer solution q.d., Soramdan S 8 g p.o., Hangamdan S 1 g p.o., t.i.d., Cheongjangtang 10-30 ml, and Spiam HC 8 g p.o. The integrative medical therapy was done with hyperthermia therapy (oncothermia) and 1.6 mg of thymosin-α1 treatment (Zadaxin) i.m. According to the CT result on July 15th, 2015, the liver metastasis was not seen anymore, while the lung metastasis was maintained stably without tumor progress. CONCLUSIONS: Accompanying integrative medical therapy with herbal remedy in the treatment of Wilms tumor showing progress patterns after surgery and chemotherapy can be meaningful as a new remedy.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the association between pickled vegetable consumption and the risk of breast cancer using a validated food frequency questionnaire. A total of 358 patients with breast cancer who were matched to 360 healthy controls by age (using a 5-yr age distribution) were recruited from the National Cancer Center in South Korea. After adjusting for nondietary risk factors, total vegetable intake was inversely associated with risk of breast cancer. However, unlike nonpickled vegetables, pickled vegetable intake and its proportion relative to total vegetables were positively associated with the risk of breast cancer, and this association was more profound and consistent when pickled vegetable intake was considered as a proportion relative to total vegetables (odds ratio [OR] = 6.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.55-10.97; P for trend <0.001 for highest vs. lowest quartiles of intake) than as the absolute consumed amount (OR = 2.47, 95% CI = 1.45-4.21; P for trend = 0.015 for highest vs. lowest quartiles of intake). These results suggest that not only the amount of total vegetable intake but also the amounts of different types of vegetable (i.e., pickled or nonpickled) and their proportions relative to total vegetables are significantly associated with the risk of breast cancer.
