ABSTRACT

High-frequency pulse lasers, applied in the form of rapid scanning, act upon the surface of aircraft skin paint layers, thereby removing the paint layers, exhibiting characteristics of efficiency and eco-friendliness. Real-time monitoring of the paint removal effect and prevention of substrate damage necessitates the continuous monitoring of paint removal thickness. Combining Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) online monitoring technology enables laser-controlled paint removal under multiple effects coupling, meeting the requirements of airworthiness maintenance. This paper, based on a high-frequency nanosecond infrared pulse laser paint removal LIBS monitoring platform, conducts research on laser paint removal thickness LIBS online monitoring of aluminum alloy plates coated with dual-layer paint. Spectra corresponding to the removal thickness of each group are collected and, respectively, paint removal thickness monitoring models based on LIBS spectra are established using the standard curve method and Principal Component Analysis-Support Vector Regression (PCA-SVR) algorithm. When monitoring paint removal thickness using the standard curve method, the intensity of five Ti element characteristic spectral lines selected is correlated with the paint removal thickness, and segmented curve fitting according to the paint layer structure satisfies the segmented curve fitting of topcoat and topcoat + primer. Among them, the average coefficient of the curve fitting of the Ti II 589.088 nm characteristic spectral line is 0.89, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 12.28 µm. Its performance is superior in the five standard curves; thus, its fitting equation is used as the criterion for paint removal thickness monitoring. To further improve monitoring accuracy, research on paint removal thickness monitoring models based on PCA-SVR is conducted. Compared to the traditional univariate standard curve method, the PCA-SVR model does not require segmented monitoring. After parameter optimization, the average fitting coefficient reaches 0.97, and the RMSE is 2.92 µm. The results indicate that the PCA-SVR-based paint removal thickness monitoring model has higher accuracy, thereby forming the basis for paint removal thickness monitoring. Through comparative research on paint removal thickness monitoring models, two types of paint removal thickness monitoring criteria are obtained, providing model solutions for high-precision monitoring and automation of aircraft skin laser paint removal thickness.

ABSTRACT

The lipids and volatile compounds in pork from different parts, including the loin, belly, shoulder and hind leg were analyzed by triple quadrupole tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Q-TOF/MS) and gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS), respectively. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and Pearson correlation analysis were utilized to establish the relationship between the lipids and volatile compounds. A total of 8 main flavour substances, 38 main phospholipids, and 32 main fatty acids were identified. The results showed that the key flavour compounds were mainly derived from unsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids containing unsaturated fatty acids, including oleic acid (C18:2n6c), α-Linolenic acid (C18:3n3), arachidonic acid (C20:4n6), PE O (18:1/20:4), PE O (18:2/20:4), and PE O (18:2/18:2), etc. Understanding the relationship between flavour compounds and lipids of pork will be helpful to control the quality of pork.

ABSTRACT

Background: Diet quality significantly influences aging processes and age-related health outcomes. This study aims to explore the association between dietary quality and accelerated aging in two large cohorts. Methods: This study collected data from the Kailuan and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cohorts; participants' dietary quality was evaluated using the American Heart Association (AHA) dietary score and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), respectively. Accelerated aging in participants was determined by calculating the difference between phenotypic age and chronological age. Logistic regression models were used to explore the association between dietary quality scores and accelerated aging. Additionally, variations in this association across different subgroups were investigated. To minimize the influence of excessive aging, individuals aged 75 and above were excluded in sensitivity analyses. Results: In this study, we included 33 701 participants (27.3% female, mean age 57.29 ± 11.88) from the Kailuan study and 9285 participants (50.6% female, mean age 49.83 ± 17.62) from NHANES. In the Kailuan cohort, individuals with dietary scores ranging from 3 to 5 exhibited a 22% lower risk of accelerated aging compared to those scoring between 0 and 2 (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.72-0.85). Similarly, in the NHANES cohort, participants in the highest quartile of HEI-2015 experienced a 34% reduction in the risk of accelerated aging compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.52-0.84). Subgroup analyses underscored a more pronounced association between dietary quality and accelerated aging among males and individuals with unhealthy lifestyles. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the association between dietary quality and accelerated aging. Conclusion: In summary, our study found a significant association between dietary quality and accelerated aging. Better dietary quality was associated with a reduced risk of accelerated aging, particularly among males, smokers, and participants with unhealthy lifestyles.

ABSTRACT

Fusarium diseases pose a severe global threat to major cereal crops, particularly wheat. Existing biocontrol strains against Fusarium diseases are believed to primarily rely on antagonistic mechanisms, but not widely used under field conditions. Here, we report an endophytic fungus, Purpureocillium lilacinum YZ1, that shows promise in combating wheat Fusarium diseases. Under glasshouse conditions, YZ1 inoculation increased the survival rate of Fusarium graminearum (Fg)-infected wheat seedlings from 0% to > 60% at the seedling stage, and reduced spikelet infections by 70.8% during anthesis. In field trials, the application of YZ1 resulted in an impressive 89.0% reduction in Fg-susceptible spikelets. While a slight antagonistic effect of YZ1 against Fg was observed on plates, the induction of wheat systemic resistance by YZ1, which is distantly effective, non-specific, and long-lasting, appeared to be a key contributor to YZ1's biocontrol capabilities. Utilizing three imaging methods, we confirmed YZ1 as a potent endophyte capable of rapid colonization of wheat roots, and systematically spreading to the stem and leaves. Integrating dual RNA-Seq, photosynthesis measurements and cell wall visualization supported the link between YZ1's growth-promoting abilities and the activation of wheat systemic resistance. In conclusion, endophytes such as YZ1, which exhibits non-antagonistic mechanisms, hold significant potential for industrial-scale biocontrol applications.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] exists widely in occupational environments. The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) has been well-documented to regulate autophagy negatively. However, we found that low concentration of Cr(VI) (0.2 µM) elevated both mTOR and autophagy and promote cell survival. Conversely, high concentration of Cr(VI) (6 µM) caused cell death by inhibiting mTOR and subsequently inducing autophagy. Tunicamycin (Tm), as an Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress activator was used to induce mild ER stress at 0.1 µg/ml and it activated both autophagy and mTOR, which also caused cell migration in a similar manner to that observed with low concentration of Cr(VI). Severe ER stress caused by Tm (2 µg/ml) decreased mTOR, increased autophagy and then inhibited cell migration, which was the same as 6 µM Cr(VI) treatment, although Cr(VI) in high concentration inhibited ER stress. Activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), a downstream target of ER stress, only increased under mild ER stress but decreased under severe ER stress and 6 µM Cr(VI) treatment. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) experiment indicated that ATF4 could bind to the promoter of ATG4B and AKT1. To sum up, our data revealed that mild ER stress induced by low concentration of Cr(VI) could enhance transcriptional regulation of ATG4B and AKT1 by ATF4, which induced both autophagy and mTOR to promote cell viability.

ABSTRACT

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) for CH4 production presents a promising strategy to address carbon neutrality, and the incorporation of a second metal has been proven effective in enhancing catalyst performance. Nevertheless, there remains limited comprehension regarding the fundamental factors responsible for the improved performance. Herein, the critical role of Pd in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 on Cu-based catalysts has been revealed at a molecular level using in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). A "borrowing" SERS strategy has been developed by depositing Cu-Pd overlayers on plasmonic Au nanoparticles to achieve the in situ monitoring of the dynamic change of the intermediate during CO2RR. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that Pd incorporation significantly enhances selectivity toward CH4 production, and the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of CH4 is more than two times higher than that for the catalysts without Pd. The key intermediates, including *CO2-, *CO, and *OH, have been directly identified under CO2RR conditions, and their evolution with the electrochemical environments has been determined. It is found that Pd incorporation promotes the activation of both CO2 and H2O molecules and accelerates the formation of abundant active *CO and hydrogen species, thus enhancing the CH4 selectivity. This work offers fundamental insights into the understanding of the molecular mechanism of CO2RR and opens up possibilities for designing more efficient electrocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty exists about whether lowering systolic blood pressure to less than 120 mm Hg is superior to that of less than 140 mm Hg, particularly in patients with diabetes and patients with previous stroke. METHODS: In this open-label, blinded-outcome, randomised controlled trial, participants with high cardiovascular risk were enrolled from 116 hospitals or communities in China. We used minimised randomisation to assign participants to intensive treatment targeting standard office systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg or standard treatment targeting less than 140 mm Hg. The primary outcome was a composite of myocardial infarction, revascularisation, hospitalisation for heart failure, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes, assessed by the intention-to-treat principle. This trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04030234. FINDINGS: Between Sept 17, 2019, and July 13, 2020, 11 255 participants (4359 with diabetes and 3022 with previous stroke) were assigned to intensive treatment (n=5624) or standard treatment (n=5631). Their mean age was 64·6 years (SD 7·1). The mean systolic blood pressure throughout the follow-up (except the first 3 months of titration) was 119·1 mm Hg (SD 11·1) in the intensive treatment group and 134·8 mm Hg (10·5) in the standard treatment group. During a median of 3·4 years of follow-up, the primary outcome event occurred in 547 (9·7%) participants in the intensive treatment group and 623 (11·1%) in the standard treatment group (hazard ratio [HR] 0·88, 95% CI 0·78-0·99; p=0·028). There was no heterogeneity of effects by diabetes status, duration of diabetes, or history of stroke. Serious adverse events of syncope occurred more frequently in the intensive treatment group (24 [0·4%] of 5624) than in standard treatment group (eight [0·1%] of 5631; HR 3·00, 95% CI 1·35-6·68). There was no significant between-group difference in the serious adverse events of hypotension, electrolyte abnormality, injurious fall, or acute kidney injury. INTERPRETATION: For hypertensive patients at high cardiovascular risk, regardless of the status of diabetes or history of stroke, the treatment strategy of targeting systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg, as compared with that of less than 140 mm Hg, prevents major vascular events, with minor excess risk. ABSTRACT

Continuous and in situ detection of biomarkers in biofluids (for example, sweat) can provide critical health data but is limited by biofluid accessibility. Here we report a sensor design that enables in situ detection of solid-state biomarkers ubiquitously present on human skin. We deploy an ionic-electronic bilayer hydrogel to facilitate the sequential dissolution, diffusion and electrochemical reaction of solid-state analytes. We demonstrate continuous monitoring of water-soluble analytes (for example, solid lactate) and water-insoluble analytes (for example, solid cholesterol) with ultralow detection limits of 0.51 and 0.26 nmol cm-2, respectively. Additionally, the bilayer hydrogel electrochemical interface reduces motion artefacts by a factor of three compared with conventional liquid-sensing electrochemical interfaces. In a clinical study, solid-state epidermal biomarkers measured by our stretchable wearable sensors showed a high correlation with biomarkers in human blood and dynamically correlated with physiological activities. These results present routes to universal platforms for biomarker monitoring without the need for biofluid acquisition.

ABSTRACT

The albino tea cultivar is one of the most important germplasms for key gene mining and high-quality tea producing. In order to elucidate the chlorophyll-deficient mechanism of albino cultivar 'Huangjinya' and its offspring, color difference, photosynthetic pigments and the relevant genes' expression of the tender shoots were comprehensively investigated in this study. Among the tested 16 offspring, 5 exhibited albino phenotype in spring and autumn, 3 showed albino phenotype in spring but normal green in autumn, while the rests were all normal green. The shoot of albino offspring had significantly higher lightness and/or yellowness than that of green ones, and possessed dramatically lower photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll precursor protochlorophyllide (Pchlide), as well as higher chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b but lower chlorophylls/carotenoids in comparison with green ones. Among the tested genes involved in chlorophyll and carotenoid metabolism pathways, expression of the magnesium protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase (CRD), 3,8-divinyl chlorophyllide 8-vinyl reductase (DVR), 5-aminolevulinate dehydratase 1 (HEMB1), 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate synthase 1 (DXS1) and 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate reductase (ISPH) was remarkably down-regulated in shoots of the albino offspring. Color difference indices of the offspring were significantly correlated with the levels of photosynthetic pigments and Pchlide, and low level of chlorophylls in shoot of albino offspring was mainly due to conversion obstacle from magnesium protoporphyrin Ⅸ (Mg-Proto IX) to Pchlide which might be attributed to down-regulatory expression of CRD and DVR.

ABSTRACT

Background: collagen type I is a fundamental composition of extracellular matrix. Typically it exists in the form of a heterotrimer, consisting of two α1 chains encoded by COL1A1 and one α2 chain encoded by COL1A2. However, in cancer a homotrimeric form of collagen type I comprises three α1 chains encoded by COL1A1 was founded. There is still a lack of transcriptional and histologic methods for detecting homotrimeric collagen type I. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the pan-cancer distribution pattern and clinical relevance of homotrimeric collagen type I is conspicuously absent. Method: Using transcriptional and immunoflourance method, we established homocol signature, which is able to transcriptionally and histologically detect homotrimeric collagen type I. We investigated the diagnostic and prognostic potential of homocol as a novel cancer biomarker in a pan-cancer cohort. Furthermore, we assessed its association with clinical manifestations in a liver cancer cohort undergoing treatment at our institute. Result: Homotrimer Collagen Type I is predominantly expressed by cancer cells and is linked to several critical cancer hallmarks, particularly inflammatory response and proliferation. Survival analyses have indicated that a high Homocol expression is correlated with poor outcomes in most types of cancer studied. In terms of cancer detection, Homocol demonstrated strong performance in Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis, with an Area Under Curve (AUC) of 0.83 for pan-cancer detection and between 0.72 and 0.99 for individual cancers.In cohorts undergoing PD1 treatment, we noted a higher presence of Homocol in the response group. In a Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) clinical set, high Homocol expression was associated with an increased formation of intra-tumor tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS), larger tumor sizes, more advanced Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages, higher microvascular invasion (MVI) grades, absence of a capsule, and an enriched para-tumor collagen presence. Conclusion: our research has led to the development of a novel gene signature that facilitates the detection of Homotrimer Collagen Type I. This may greatly assist efforts in cancer detection, prognosis, treatment response prediction, and further research into Homotrimer Collagen Type I.

ABSTRACT

Squamous papilloma is a benign neoplasm that originates from the stratified squamous epithelium of the mucous membrane. Its principal etiological factor is human papillomavirus infection, with a predilection for manifesting within the oral cavity. Squamous papilloma predominantly affects regions on the palate, cheeks, lips and tongue. However, to the best of our knowledge, the occurrence of squamous papilloma within the confines of the mandible remains unreported hitherto. The present report documents a case of squamous papilloma involving the mandible who was managed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou, China) in January 2023. The patient underwent a series of recurrent jaw inflammations, manifesting with malignant imaging characteristics. Subsequent pathological analysis confirmed a diagnosis of papilloma in the jaw. The present report highlights the pivotal role of prolonged inflammation in the genesis of jaw squamous papilloma, prompting avenues for further investigation, including the potential of inflammation to induce aberrant cell growth, mediate cell interactions, orchestrate cytokine actions and influence stress mediators. In addition, the current study posits a plausible connection between persistent inflammation, compromised epithelial integrity and an increased likelihood of head and neck papilloma, particularly concerning human papillomavirus infection. This article delineates the clinical attributes of the uncommon manifestations of jaw papilloma and delves into the associated mechanisms, thereby contributing to an enhanced comprehension of jaw disorders. This comprehensive insight equips clinicians with a heightened knowledge base for more precise diagnosis and treatment of analogous cases.

The overall health condition of patients significantly affects the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of endodontic diseases. A systemic consideration of the patient's overall health along with oral conditions holds the utmost importance in determining the necessity and feasibility of endodontic therapy, as well as selecting appropriate therapeutic approaches. This expert consensus is a collaborative effort by specialists from endodontics and clinical physicians across the nation based on the current clinical evidence, aiming to provide general guidance on clinical procedures, improve patient safety and enhance clinical outcomes of endodontic therapy in patients with compromised overall health.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic potential of radiomic analyses based on machine learning that rely on contrast-enhanced computerized tomography (CT) for categorizing ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors (SCSTs) and epithelial ovarian cancers (EOCs). METHODS: We included a total of 225 patients with 230 tumors, who were randomly divided into training and test cohorts with a ratio of 8:2. Radiomic features were extracted from each tumor and dimensionally reduced using LASSO. We used univariate and multivariate analyses to identify independent predictors from clinical features and conventional CT parameters. Clinic-radiological model, radiomics model and mixed model were constructed respectively. We evaluated model performance via analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under ROC curves (AUCs), and compared it across models using the Delong test. RESULTS: We selected a support vector machine as the best classifier. Both radiomic and mixed model achieved good classification accuracy with AUC values of 0.923/0.930 in the training cohort, and 0.879/0.909 in the test cohort. The mixed model performed significantly better than the model based on clinical radiological information, with AUC values of 0.930 versus 0.826 (p = 0.000) in the training cohort and 0.905 versus 0.788 (p = 0.042) in the test cohort. CONCLUSION: Radiomic analysis based on CT images is a reliable and noninvasive tool for identifying SCSTs and EOCs, outperforming experience radiologists.

Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women worldwide. As a RING type ubiquitin ligase, SIAH2 has been reported to promote the progression of a variety of tumors by interacting with and targeting multiple chaperones and substrates. The aim of this study was to further identify the role and the related molecular mechanisms involved of SIAH2 in cervical carcinogenesis. Methods and results: Cellular assays in vitro showed that knockdown of SIAH2 inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of human cervical cancer cells C33A and SiHa, induced apoptosis, and increased the sensitivity to cisplatin treatment. Knockdown of SIAH2 also inhibited the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and activation of the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in cervical cancer cells, which were detected by Western blot. Mechanistically, SIAH2, as a ubiquitin ligase, induced the ubiquitination degradation of GSK3ß degradation by using coIP. The results of complementation experiments further demonstrated that GSK3ß overexpression rescued the increase of cell proliferation and invasion caused by SIAH2 overexpression. Specific expression of SIAH2 appeared in precancerous and cervical cancer tissues compared to inflammatory cervical lesions tissues using immunohistochemical staining. The more SIAH2 was expressed as the degree of cancer progressed. SIAH2 was significantly highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues (44/55, 80 %) compared with precancerous tissues (18/69, 26.1 %). Moreover, the expression level of SIAH2 in cervical cancer tissues was significantly correlated with the degree of cancer differentiation, and cervical cancer tissues with higher SIAH2 expression levels were less differentiated. Conclusion: Targeting SIAH2 may be beneficial to the treatment of cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of Astragalus combined with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockers in treating stage III diabetic nephropathy (DN) by meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Wiley, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published between August 2007 and August 2022. Clinical studies on Astragalus combined with RAAS blockers for the treatment of stage III DN were included. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.1 and Stata 14.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 32 papers were included in this meta-analysis, containing 2462 patients from randomized controlled trials, with 1244 receiving the combination treatment and 1218 solely receiving RAAS blockers. Astragalus combined with RAAS blockers yielded a significantly higher total effective rate (TER) (mean difference [MD] 3.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.59-5.09) and significantly reduced urinary protein excretion rate (UPER), serum creatinine (Scr), blood urine nitrogen (BUN) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) levels. In subgroup analysis, combining astragalus and angiotensin receptor blocker significantly lowered fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 24 h urinary protein (24hUTP) levels, compared with the combined astragalus and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor treatment. Meanwhile, the latter significantly decreased the urinary microprotein (ß2-MG). Importantly, the sensitivity analysis confirmed the study's stability, and publication bias was not detected for UPER, BUN, HbAlc, FPG, or ß2-MG. However, the TER, SCr, and 24hUTP results suggested possible publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: The astragalus-RAAS blocker combination treatment is safe and improves outcomes; however, rigorous randomized, large-scale, multi-center, double-blind trials are needed to evaluate its efficacy and safety in stage III DN.


Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors are commonly used to treat diabetic neuropathy (DN) and Astragalus membranaceus components are known to improve DN symptoms.We aimed to establish the efficacy and safety of using Astragalus combined with RAAS inhibitors.Astragalus combined with RAAS inhibitors enhances the total effective rate of diabetic neuropathy response to treatment and reduces urinary protein excretion rate, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and HbAlc.Sensitivity analysis affirms study stability, while publication bias was detected for total effective rate, serum creatinine, and 24 h urinary protein levels.

ABSTRACT

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a novel tick-borne viral pathogen that causes severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). The disease was initially reported in central and eastern China, then later in Japan and South Korea, with a mortality rate of 13-30%. Currently, no vaccines or effective therapeutics are available for SFTS treatment. In this study, three monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting the SFTSV envelope glycoprotein Gn were obtained using the hybridoma technique. Two mAbs recognized linear epitopes and did not neutralize SFTSV, while the mAb 40C10 can effectively neutralized SFTSV of different genotypes and also the SFTSV-related Guertu virus (GTV) and Heartland virus (HRTV) by targeting a spatial epitope of Gn. Additionally, the mAb 40C10 showed therapeutic effect in mice infected with different genotypes of SFTSV strains against death by preventing the development of lesions and by promoting virus clearance in tissues. The therapeutic effect could still be observed in mice infected with SFTSV which were administered with mAb 40C10 after infection even up to 4 days. These findings enhance our understanding of SFTSV immunogenicity and provide valuable information for designing detection methods and strategies targeting SFTSV antigens. The neutralizing mAb 40C10 possesses the potential to be further developed as a therapeutic monoclonal antibody against SFTSV and SFTSV-related viruses.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a UV-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was constructed using bimetallic metal-organic frameworks to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Mn-MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesised by adjusting the doping ratio of Mn using solvothermal method. The removal of ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process was as high as 79.7% in 30 min with a Mn doping ratio of 1.0 (molar ratio of Mn to Fe), and the reaction rate constant was 26.9% higher than undoped. Mn-MIL-53(Fe) had been systematically characterized in terms of its physical structure, microscopic morphology, surface functional groups and photoelectric properties. The mechanism investigation revealed that the cycling of Mn and Fe accelerated the rate of electron transfer in the system, which significantly increased the activation efficacy of PMS to generate more hydroxyl and sulfate radicals for IBP degradation. A total of 13 transformation products were detected during the degradation of IBP by the UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process. Theoretical calculations were used to predict the sites on the IBP molecule that were vulnerable to attack, and four possible degradation pathways were deduced. The excellent stability and efficient catalytic properties of Mn-MIL-53(Fe) provided a promising solution to the problem of water treatment contaminated with PPCPs.

The late stage of embryo development is a crucial period of metabolic changes, with rapid organ development requiring a substantial supply of nutrients. During this phase, maternal nutritional levels play a vital role in the growth, development, and metabolism of the offspring. In this study, we added 2 doses of ß-carotene (ßc) (120 mg/kg and 240 mg/kg) to the daily diet of Hailan Brown laying hens to investigate the impact of maternal nutritional enrichment on embryo development. Maternal nutrition supplementation significantly increased the expression of chicken embryo liver index, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in serum. At the same time, the expression of GH/growth hormone receptor (GHR), IGF-1 mRNA, and Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) protein in the liver was upregulated, indicating that maternal nutrition intervention may promote chicken embryo liver development through the GH-IGF-1 axis. Transcriptome sequencing results showed that differential genes in liver after maternal nutritional supplementation with ß-carotene were enriched in pathways related to cell proliferation and metabolism. Consequently, we postulated that maternal ß-carotene supplementation might operate via the GH-IGF-1 axis to regulate the expression of genes involved in growth and development, thereby promoting liver development. These results contribute to formulating more effective poultry feeding strategies to promote offspring growth and development.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Reduced muscle mass is a criterion for diagnosing malnutrition using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria; however, the choice of muscle-mass indicators within the GLIM criteria remains contentious. This study aimed to establish muscle-measurement-based GLIM criteria using data from bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometric evaluations and evaluate their ability to predict overall survival (OS), short-term outcomes, and healthcare burden in patients with cancer. METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective study that commenced in 2013 and enrolled participants from various clinical centers across China. We constructed GLIM criteria based on various muscle measurements, including fat-free mass index (FFMI), skeletal muscle index (SMI), calf circumference (CC), midarm circumference (MAC), midarm muscle circumference (MAMC), and midarm muscle area (MAMA). Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and survival curves were compared using the log-rank test. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess the independent association between the GLIM criteria and OS. The discriminatory performance of different muscle-measurement-based GLIM criteria for mortality was evaluated using Harrell's concordance index (C-index). Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association of the GLIM criteria with short-term outcomes and healthcare burden. RESULTS: A total of 4769 patients were included in the analysis, of whom 1659 (34.8%) died during the study period. The Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated that all muscle-measurement-based GLIM criteria significantly predicted survival in patients with cancer (all p < 0.001). The survival rate of malnourished patients was approximately 10% lower than that of non-malnourished patients. Cox proportional hazards regression showed that all the muscle-measurement-based GLIM could independently predict the OS of patients (all p < 0.001). The prognostic discrimination was as follows: MAMC (Chi-square: 79.61) > MAMA (Chi-square: 79.10) > MAC (Chi-square: 64.09) > FFMI (Chi-square: 62.33) > CC (Chi-square: 58.62) > ASMI (Chi-square: 57.29). In comparison to the FFMI-based GLIM criteria, the ASMI-based criteria (-0.002, 95% CI: -0.006 to 0.002, p = 0.334) and CC-based criteria (-0.003, 95% CI: -0.007 to 0.002, p = 0.227) did not exhibit a significant advantage. However, the MAC-based criteria (0.001, 95% CI: -0.003 to 0.004, p = 0.776), MAMA-based criteria (0.004, 95% CI: 0.000-0.007, p = 0.035), and MAMC-based criteria (0.005, 95% CI: 0.000-0.007, p = 0.030) outperformed the FFMI-based GLIM criteria. Logistic regression showed that muscle measurement-based GLIM criteria predicted short-term outcomes and length of hospital stay in patients with cancer. CONCLUSION: All muscle measurement-based GLIM criteria can effectively predict OS, short-term outcomes, and healthcare burden in patients with cancer. Anthropometric measurement-based GLIM criteria have potential for clinical application as an alternative to BIA-based measurement.

ABSTRACT

Aging is a challenge to global development. This challenge is particularly significant for China because it has the largest elderly population worldwide. The proportion of aging population continues to increase, and solely relying on government efforts to meet the needs of the elderly is inadequate. Hence, involvement of social organizations in elderly care services is needed. Their core members exhibit higher sense of responsibility and identification with the organization than regular members, thus profoundly affecting organizational development. Based on the Social Capital Theory, this study employed a multistage stratified random sampling method to examine the social capital stock of elderly social organizations and their core members across six cities in Anhui Province, China. Chi-square tests analyzed the relationship between the core members' demographic factors and individual performance. Independent-sample t-tests assessed the relationship between social capital and individual performance. Finally, binary logistic regression models determined the factors influencing the individual performance of core members. Social networks within core members' social capital and the internal social capital of elderly caring social organizations (ESOs) affect the individual performance of core members. Therefore, organizations should provide more training opportunities for core members to expand their networks. Cultivating a shared language and vision as components of social capital can enhance organizational cohesion and operational stability.
