ABSTRACT

The Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex includes a group of spirochete bacteria that are involved in transmission cycles with vertebrates and the ticks associated with them. Rodents play an essential role in the ecoepidemiology of Borrelia, acting as reservoirs for the bacteria and hosts for ticks. To identify potential reservoir vertebrate hosts of Borrelia spirochetes in Argentina, we conducted molecular analyses on tissues obtained from a population of Sigmodontinae rodents inhabiting the Delta and Parana Islands ecoregion. We report the presence of B. burgdorferi s.l. complex genotypes infecting Akodon azarae and Oxymycterus rufus in this ecoregion. Phylogenetic analysis revealed at least three flaB haplotypes related to 'Candidatus Borrelia paulista' and Borrelia sp. strain Pampa from Brazil and to several Borrelia haplotypes from Uruguay. Additionally, we identified different alleles of the plasmid-borne gene ospC in B. burgdorferi s.l. infecting A. azarae and Ox. rufus. The ospC allele present in Borrelia from Ox. rufus was also detected in Borrelia from Oligoryzomys mattogrossae, indicating the ability of Borrelia harbouring this ospC allele to infect multiple Sigmodontinae species, whereas the ospC allele from Borrelia infecting A. azarae represents a novel variant. Further research is needed to determine host specificity of ospC alleles present in South America.

ABSTRACT

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are parasitic nematodes commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, where poor sanitation makes them a significant public health concern. This study provides a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of human STH infections across 13 South American countries from 2000 to 2023. It covers these infections' prevalence, distribution, and diagnosis, highlighting the environmental factors influencing transmission pathways. The review identified 134 studies on human STH infections, revealing Brazil as the most researched country. The meta-analysis found prevalence rates of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworms, and Strongyloides stercoralis below 20 %, with notable heterogeneity across studies. Most studies used conventional microscopy for diagnosis, pointing out the need for implementing advanced diagnostic tools. Environmental and climatic factors, including temperature annual range, vegetation density, soil types, and properties were significant predictors of STH prevalence. The study calls for more research performing advanced diagnostic methods and broader geographical coverage to address existing data gaps. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for holistic public health policies integrating biomedical and environmental approaches to ensure effective disease management.

Background: Monitoring the health of wild animals under the principles of one health contributes to the prevention of diseases and the preservation of human and animal health, thus contributing to the conservation of species. Aim: The current study describes the clinical and paraclinical status of an ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) captured in Buriticá, Antioquia, Colombia, for research purposes with the aim of contributing to the construction of animal health reference values in the wild, considering the scarcity of published data for the country on capture, management, and paraclinical parameters related to this species. Methods: For this, hematological parameters, blood chemistry, urine cytochemical analyses, and coprological examinations were carried out. Results: The hematological values of the captured individual do not show relevant differences concerning those reported in the literature in both captive and free specimens. However, differences were identified between the reference blood chemistry and urine cytochemical values between reports of animals in captivity and the wild, revealing the need to develop reference standards for animals in the wild that guarantee adequate management of these species and favor their conservation. A possible picture of renal failure and multiple parasitic infections of epidemiological importance was found. Conclusion: This study reports for the first time a urine infection by Capillaria sp. and an infection by Dicrocoelium spp. in fecal matter for the species.

ABSTRACT

Over the last few years, during the pandemic, the Brazilian population has suffered several problems, ranging from health to socioeconomic impacts. When we consider Brazilian science, there has been an undeniable scientific delay generated by the pandemic, especially in areas that are not related to the coronavirus. In this context, with the aim of fostering collaboration among researchers in the field of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD) and enhancing the potential for implementing public health strategies to prevent noncommunicable chronic diseases, the Brazilian Association of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD Brazil) was established in 2020. In this narrative, we explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, focusing on its impacts on scientific research conducted in universities. Additionally, we underscore the significance of the DOHaD Brazil Association, particularly from the perspective of young researchers engaged in DOHaD research in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Stroke is the second leading cause of death and disability in Latin America; however, few epidemiological studies have been conducted in South America. An observational study was conducted to analyze trends in stroke mortality in South American (SA) countries. Age-standardized mortality rates and proportional mortality due to stroke in the populations of SA countries between 1990 and 2019 were assessed by extracting data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. Joinpoint regression models were employed to identify trends in the annual percentage change in mortality rates for each segment. Considering the data collected over the 30 years that were studied, the age-standardized stroke mortality trend decreased in Argentina (-1.6%), Uruguay (-0.6%), Brazil (-0.5%), Guyana (-0.5%), and Bolivia (-0.4%), while Venezuela (+1.6%) and Suriname (+1.0%) showed an increasing trend. The proportional stroke mortality trend decreased in Argentina (-1.7%), Paraguay (-0.9%), Uruguay (-0.7%), Guyana (-0.7%), Brazil (-0.5%), and Chile (-0.5%), whereas Bolivia (+1.0%), Suriname (+0.6%), and Peru (+0.4%) exhibited an increasing trend. The trends in stroke mortality between 1990 and 2019 demonstrated considerable variability. While most SA countries experienced significant decreases in stroke mortality trends, Venezuela and Suriname showed increases in age-standardized mortality rates, and Bolivia, Suriname, and Peru exhibited increases in proportional mortality rates. No decreasing stroke mortality trend was observed in the segment after the last joinpoint, highlighting the need for improvement in prevention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

A new genus, Nilssondytes gen. nov., is described for a unique new species, Nilssondytesdiversus sp. nov., from Venezuela. This paper corrects an inadvertent mistake in a paper by the authors (Miller et al. 2024) in which the collection of deposition of the holotype of the species was not indicated making the new species unavailable which, therefore, made the new genus unavailable. A review of the relevant parts of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is included. Diagnostic features of the new genus and species are discussed and illustrated.

Background/Objectives: In 2020, ovarian cancer ranked fourth in global incidence among gynecological cancers and remains the deadliest cancer affecting women's health. Survival rates are significantly higher when the disease is detected at early stages; however, the lack of effective early detection methods underscores the importance of identifying risk factors in order to implement preventive strategies. The objective of this work is to provide an overview of the risk factors of ovarian cancer in South America, emphasizing those linked to social determinants, genetic components, and comorbidities. Methods: A literature search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. MeSH descriptors and keywords, such as "BRCA1 genes," "BRCA2 genes", "Latin America", and "ovarian neoplasms" were used, along with terms related to socioeconomic and health factors. Inclusion criteria focused on original studies published in the last five years involving South American women. Results: Studies were identified from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. These studies addressed genetic factors, health status at diagnosis, and sociodemographic factors, revealing important data gaps, particularly on contraception and hormone replacement therapy. The prevalence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in South America is estimated to be 15-20% among women with inherited risk factors. Social, demographic and economic factors vary by country, although commonalities include a higher prevalence among women over 50 years of age, those with limited education, and those who face barriers to accessing health care. Conclusions: Although the literature does not conclusively establish a direct link between obesity and/or diabetes and the development of ovarian cancer, the indirect association highlights the need for further clinical studies. A general research gap related to risk factors of ovarian cancer could be observed in the South American region.

Parasites are key players in ecosystems, influencing population sizes and food webs, yet the impact of environmental factors on their diversity is not well understood. The Atlantic rainforest in Brazil, particularly the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI), exemplifies a biodiversity hotspot facing significant deforestation, housing diverse animal species such as the synanthropic Brazilian common opossum (Didelphis aurita), which serves as a reservoir for multiple zoonotic pathogens. In this study, we investigated parasite diversity, abundance, prevalence, and richness in free-living D. aurita in the PEFI, São Paulo, Brazil. From January 2015 to January 2017, 101 fecal samples of D. aurita were collected in two areas of PEFI, at the Instituto de Pesquisas Ambientais (IPA) and the Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia (Cientec), and analyzed using three different parasitological methods. In total, 99% of the samples were positive for at least one parasite. The most prevalent parasite belonged to the order Strongylida (82%), followed by Cruzia sp. (77%), the latter having a significantly higher prevalence at IPA. In contrast, Acanthocephala showed greater prevalence at Cientec. Co-infections were common, with some individuals harboring up to seven different parasites. Our findings reveal significant parasite diversity in the D. aurita population at PEFI, including both helminths and protozoan trophozoites, some of which are reported for the first time in this host species. Further research is essential for accurate species identification of the observed parasites.

ABSTRACT

Identifying evidence of human modification of extinct animal remains, such as Pleistocene megafauna, is challenging due to the similarity of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic features observed under optical microscopy. Here, we re-investigate a Late Pleistocene ground sloth tooth from northeast Brazil, previously suggested as human-modified based only on optical observation. To characterize the macro- and micro-morphological characteristics of the marks preserved in this tooth and evaluate potential human modification, we used stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supplemented by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV photoluminescence (UV/PL), synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), and synchrotron micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT). These methods allowed us to discriminate non-anthropogenic taphonomic features (root and sedimentary damage), anthropogenic marks, and histological features. The latter shows the infiltration of exogenous elements into the dentine from the sediments. Our evidence demonstrates the sequence of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic taphonomic modification of this tooth and supports its initial intentional modification by humans. We highlight the benefits of emerging imaging and spectral imaging techniques to investigate and diagnose human modification in fossil and archaeological records and propose that human modification of tooth tissues should be further considered when studying possibly anthropogenically altered fossil remains.

ABSTRACT

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are halogenated contaminants found globally. Cetaceans are impacted by these pollutants, and nowadays, it is essential to understand their presence to mitigate their impacts. This study aimed to establish baseline levels of POPs in the blubber of Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) within the Subantarctic ecosystem. A wide range of POPs concentrations were measured among individuals: ΣPCBs from 289.5 to 15264 ng g-1 lw and ΣDDTs from 540.4 to 17657 ng g-1 lw. Levels of HCB and mirex ranged from 48 to 1703.7 ng g-1 lw and 5.1-1917.4 ng g-1 lw, respectively. The predominant POPs were mid-to high molecular weight PCBs (hexa-PCBs), consistent with other findings in cetaceans of the southern hemisphere. The mean ratio of ΣDDT/ΣPCB was 0.44, with p,p'-DDE/ΣDDT at 0.56, indicating p,p'-DDE as the dominant DDT isomer. Furthermore, differences in POP concentrations were observed based on sexual maturity, with mature males exhibiting higher levels of Æ©PCBs, HCB, Æ©DDT, and mirex. Age and total body length of animals were strongly correlated with POP concentrations. Our study provides valuable insights into the pollutant status of POPs in the Subantarctic population of Commerson's dolphins inhabiting the southernmost coastal regions of South America.

Orthohantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that cause acute and severe syndromes in humans. This review was performed to estimate the occurrence of human orthohantaviruses in South America between 2010 and 2022. A careful evaluation of the eligibility and quality of the articles was carried out after a systematic bibliographic search of four databases. The pooled frequency of human orthohantaviruses was calculated using a random effects model meta-analysis. The heterogeneity of estimates (resulting from the chi2 test and I2 statistics) was investigated by subgroup analysis and meta-regression. 1,962 confirmed cases of orthohantavirus infections were diagnosed among 35,548 individuals from seven South American countries. The general occurrence of orthohantaviruses was estimated to be 4.4% (95% confidence interval: 2.9-6.2%) based on general pooling of human cases from 32 studies. In a subgroup analysis considering the study design and method of diagnosis, the percentages of diagnosed orthohantavirus infections differed substantially (I2 = 97.8%, p = 0.00) among South American countries. Four genetic variants of orthohantavirus have been identified circulating in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. Although laboratory diagnosis of orthohantaviruses is not performed in many countries in South America, there is evidence that four different orthohantaviruses are circulating in the region. The pooled occurrence of viral infection was approximately 4.0% in more than half of the South American countries. Updated information on the occurrence of human infections is essential for monitoring the territorial spread and determining the frequency of this zoonosis.

PREMISE: Fossil infructescences and isolated fruits with characters of Malvoideae, a subfamily of Malvaceae (mallow family), were collected from early Eocene sediments in Chubut, Argentina. The main goals of this research are to describe and place these fossils systematically, and to explore their biogeographical implications. METHODS: Fossils were collected at the Laguna del Hunco site, Huitrera Formation, Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina. They were prepared, photographed, and compared with extant and fossil infructescences and fruits of various families using herbarium material and literature. RESULTS: The infructescences are panicles with alternate arrangement of fruits. They bear the fruits on short pedicels that are subtended by a bract; the fruits display an infracarpelar disk and split to the base into five ovate sections interpreted as mericarps. Each mericarp is characterized by an acute apex and the presence of a longitudinal ridge. The isolated fruits show the same features as those on the infructescences. The fossils share unique features with members of the cosmopolitan family Malvaceae, subfamily Malvoideae. CONCLUSIONS: The fossils have a unique combination of characters that does not conform to any previously described genus, justifying the erection of a new genus and species, Uiher karuen. This new taxon constitutes the first known Malvoideae reproductive fossils of the Southern Hemisphere, expanding the distribution of Malvoideae during the early Eocene.

ABSTRACT

Nutrient foramina are small openings in the periosteal surface of the mid-shaft region of long bones that traverse the cortical layer and reach the medullary cavity. They are important for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to bone tissue and are crucial for the repair and remodeling of bones over time. The nutrient foramina in the femur's diaphysis are related to the energetic needs of the femur and have been shown to be related to the maximum metabolic rate (MMR) of taxa. Here, we investigate the relationship between nutrient foramen size and body mass as a proxy to the aerobic capacity of taxa in living and extinct xenarthrans, including living sloths, anteaters, and armadillos, as well as extinct xenarthrans such as glyptodonts, pampatheres, and ground sloths. Seventy femora were sampled, including 20 from extant taxa and 50 from extinct taxa. We obtained the blood flow rate (Q̇) based on foramina area and performed PGLS and phylogenetic ANCOVA in order to explore differences among mammalian groups. Our results show that, among mammals, taxa commonly associated with lower metabolism like living xenarthrans showed relatively smaller foramina, while the foramina of giant extinct xenarthrans like ground sloths and glyptodonts overlapped with non-xenarthran placentals. Consequently, Q̇ estimations indicated aerobic capacities comparable to other placental giant taxa like elephants or some ungulates. Furthermore, the estimation of the MMR for fossil giant taxa showed similar results, with almost all taxa showing high values except for those for which strong semi-arboreal or fossorial habits have been proposed. Moreover, the results are compatible with the diets predicted for extinct taxa, which indicate a strong consumption of grass similar to ungulates and in contrast to the folivorous or insectivorous diets of extant xenarthrans. The ancestral reconstruction of the MMR values indicated a lack of a common pattern for all xenarthrans, strongly supporting the occurrence of low metabolic rates in extant forms due to their particular dietary preferences and arboreal or fossorial habits. Our results highlight the importance of considering different evidence beyond the phylogenetic position of extinct taxa, especially when extinct forms are exceptionally different from their extant relatives. Future studies evaluating the energetic needs of giant extinct xenarthrans should not assume lower metabolic rates for these extinct animals based solely on their phylogenetic position and the observations on their extant relatives.

ABSTRACT

Human schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by an infection with trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. The disease mainly affects impoverished populations. Around 800 million people are exposed to the infection, which is a public health problem in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. In Brazil, Schistosoma mansoni is the only species that causes schistosomiasis and the disease is widely distributed. Conventional diagnosis of the disease is carried out by detecting eggs using parasitological methods, such as the Kato-Katz test. Schistosomiasis has been reported in all regions of Brazil and is characterized as endemic in seven states in the Northeast Region and two states in the Southeast Region. In 2015, 78,7% of all cases reported in Brazil occurred in the Northeast Region. It is estimated that 1,5 million people is infected with this disease in Brazil and more than 25 millions live in areas with a high risk of transmission. Despite the reduction in mortality and morbidity, schistosomiasis was responsible for 8,756 deaths between 2000 and 2011 and 2,517 deaths between 2015 and 2019 in Brazil and it remains an important public health problem. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, some areas have low endemicity or isolated foci of Schistosoma mansoni and the majority of infected individuals have mild infections. The last survey of the disease in the state of Rio de Janeiro was carried out between 2010 and 2015 in students aged 7 to 17.Schistosomiasis was reported in 10 of the 21 municipalities studied. Of the 5,111 school children screened for S. mansoni infection, 46 (1,65%) were tested positive. Studies carried out in areas of low endemicity in Rio de Janeiro showed that among the 205 patients infected by S. mansoni in Sumidouro, around 84% were aged 14 or over and all, except one individual, had the intestinal form (91,2%) or hepato-intestinal (8,3%) of schistosomiasis. Another study carried out in Sumidouro showed that with tests based on patent Schistosoma egg infection determined by the Kato-Katz test, active infections were diagnosed in eight (8/108) individuals. The intensity of infection expressed by parasite loads ranged from 6 to 72 eggs per gram of feces/individual. The results showed DNA amplification in 32 of the 100 individuals tested by real-time PCR. All individuals with patent ovo infection showed positive DNA amplification. These studies showed that if we only analyzed school-age children using the Kato-Katz test, the majority of the infected population would never be diagnosed with S. mansoni infection. In situations of low endemicity, with low intensities of infection, with low severity in the population and in the most affected age groups, schistosomiasis requires a more sensitive diagnostic approach (e.g. screening by PCR rather than Kato test), otherwise many infected individuals will remain invisible to the healthcare system.


A esquistossomose humana é uma doença parasitária causada por uma infecçâo por vermes sanguíneos do gènero Schistosoma. A doença afeta principalmente populaçoes empobrecidas. Cerca de 800 milhoes de pessoas estâo expostas à infecçâo, sendo um problema de saúde pública nas regioes tropicais e subtropicais de África, Ásia, Caribe e América do Sul. No Brasil, o Schistosoma mansoni é a única espécie causadora da esquistossomose e a doença é amplamente distribuida. O diagnóstico convencional da doença é realizado pela detecçâo dos ovos através de métodos parasitológicos, como o teste de Kato-Katz. A esquistossomose foi notificada em todas as regioes do Brasil, e é caracterizada como endèmica em sete estados da Regiâo Nordeste e dois estados da Regiâo Sudeste. Em 2015, 78,7% de todos os casos notificados no Brasil ocorreram na Regiâo Nordeste. Estima-se que 1,5 milhâo de pessoas estejam infectadas com esta doença no Brasil e mais de 25 milhoes vivam em áreas com alto risco de transmissâo. Apesar da reduçâo da mortalidade e morbidade, a esquistossomose foi relatada em 8.756 mortes entre 2000 e 2011 e em 2.517 mortes entre 2015 e 2019 no Brasil e continua sendo um importante problema de saúde pública. No Estado do Rio de Janeiro, algumas áreas apresentam baixa endemicidade ou focos isolados de Schistosoma mansoni e a maioria dos individuos infectados apresenta infecçoes leves. O último levantamento da doença no Estado do Rio de Janeiro foi realizado entre 2010 e 2015 em estudantes de 7 a 17 anos. A esquistossomose foi relatada em 10 dos 21 municipios estudados. Das 5.111 crianças escolares triadas para infecçâo por S. mansoni, 46 (1,65%) testaram positivo. Estudos realizados em áreas de baixa endemicidade no Rio de Janeiro mostraram que dentre os 205 pacientes infectados por S. mansoni em Sumidouro, cerca de 84% tinham 14 anos ou mais e todos, exceto um individuo, tinham a forma intestinal (91,2%) ou hepato-intestinal (8,3%) da esquistossomose. Outro estudo realizado em Sumidouro, mostrou que testes baseados em infecçâo patente de ovo de Schistosoma determinada pelo teste de Kato-Katz, infecçoes ativas foram diagnosticadas em oito (8/108) individuos. A intensidade de infecçâo expressa pelas cargas parasitárias variou de 6 a 72 ovos por grama de fezes/individuo. Os resultados mostraram amplificaçâo do DNA em 32 dos 100 individuos testados por PCR em tempo real. Todos os indivíduos com infecçâo ovo-patente apresentaram amplificaçâo de DNA positiva. Tais estudos mostraram que se analisarmos apenas crianças em idade escolar pelo teste de Kato-Katz, a maioria da populaçâo infectada nunca seria diagnosticada com infecçâo pelo S. mansoni. Em situaçoes de baixa endemicidade, com baixas intensidades de infecçâo, com baixa gravidade na populaçâo e nas faixas etárias mais afetadas, a esquistossomose requer uma abordagem diagnóstica mais sensivel (por exemplo, triagem por PCR em vez do teste de Kato), caso contràrio, muitos individuos infectados permanecerâo invisiveis para o sistema de saúde.

ABSTRACT

Global warming during the Last Glacial Termination was interrupted by millennial-scale cool intervals such as the Younger Dryas and the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). Although these events are well characterized at high latitudes, their impacts at low latitudes are less well known. We present high-resolution temperature and hydroclimate records from the tropical Andes spanning the past ~16,800 y using organic geochemical proxies applied to a sediment core from Laguna Llaviucu, Ecuador. Our hydroclimate record aligns with records from the western Amazon and eastern and central Andes and indicates a dominant long-term influence of changing austral summer insolation on the intensity of the South American Summer Monsoon. Our temperature record indicates a ~4 °C warming during the glacial termination, stable temperatures in the early to mid-Holocene, and slight, gradual warming since ~6,000 y ago. Importantly, we observe a ~1.5 °C cold reversal coincident with the ACR. These data document a temperature change pattern during the deglaciation in the tropical Andes that resembles temperatures at high southern latitudes, which are thought to be controlled by radiative forcing from atmospheric greenhouse gases and changes in ocean heat transport by the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation.

ABSTRACT

Deadly outbreaks among poultry, wild birds, and carnivorous mammals by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus of the clade 2.3.4.4b have been reported in South America. The increasing virus incidence in various mammal species poses a severe zoonotic and pandemic threat. In Uruguay, the clade 2.3.4.4b viruses were first detected in February 2023, affecting wild birds and backyard poultry. Three months after the first reported case in Uruguay, the disease affected a population of 23 coatis (Nasua) in an ecological park. Most animals became infected, likely directly or indirectly from wild birds in the park, and experienced sudden death. Five animals from the colony survived, and four of them developed antibodies. The genomes of the H5N1 strains infecting coatis belonged to the B3.2 genotype of the clade 2.3.4.4b. Genomes from coatis were closely associated with those infecting backyard poultry, but transmission likely occurred through wild birds. Notable, two genomes have a 627K substitution in the RNA polymerase PB2 subunit, a hallmark amino acid linked to mammalian adaptation. Our findings support the ability of the avian influenza virus of the 2.3.4.4b clade to infect and transmit among terrestrial mammals with high pathogenicity and undergo rapid adaptive changes. It also highlights the coatis' ability to develop immunity and naturally clear the infection.

ABSTRACT

Peirosauridae (Crocodyliformes, Notosuchia) is one of the fossil lineages of crocodyliforms ubiquitous in the Cretaceous deposits of the Bauru Basin. Here, we describe a new species of a longirostrine Peirosauridae from the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Basin, Late Cretaceous). The specimen consists of a partially preserved skull with a cranial roof, interorbital region, and fragments of the posterior portion of the rostrum, including the prefrontal and lacrimal; left hemimandible, with 14 alveoli and 12 teeth; and a single cervical rib fragment. The specimen is associated with Peirosauridae by three cranial synapomorphies, and it can be assigned to a new genus and species by presenting seven cranial and one tooth apomorphies. To clarify the position of the new taxon, an updated phylogenetic analysis was performed with increased sampling of taxa of Notosuchia, especially Peirosauridae, and phylogenetically relevant characters. Our results indicated the monophyly of Peirosauridae, formed by two main lineages, the oreinirostral and presumably terrestrial Peirosaurinae and the longirostrine and presumably semi-aquatic Pepesuchinae. The recovering of both lineages as distinct entities was also reinforced through a morphospace analysis. Pepesuchinae were notable by exploring a position of the morphospace not explored by any other Notosuchia. Their longer rostra and the assumption of them being gradually specialized to aquatic habits reflects the unique diversity of these crocodyliforms through the Cretaceous deposits of South America and Africa.

ABSTRACT

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is a mosquitoborne virus that reemerged in December 2023 in Argentina and Uruguay, causing a major outbreak. We investigated the outbreak using epidemiologic, entomological, and genomic analyses, focusing on WEEV circulation near the Argentina‒Uruguay border in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. During November 2023‒April 2024, the outbreak in Argentina and Uruguay resulted in 217 human cases, 12 of which were fatal, and 2,548 equine cases. We determined cases on the basis of laboratory and clinical epidemiologic criteria. We characterized 3 fatal equine cases caused by a novel WEEV lineage identified through a nearly complete coding sequence analysis, which we propose as lineage C. Our findings highlight the importance of continued surveillance and equine vaccination to control future WEEV outbreaks in South America.
