ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acute malnutrition in children <5 years of age has a direct relationship with medical complications and mortality. We aimed to describe the etiologic factors in children with moderate and severe non-illness-related acute malnutrition who required hospitalization for treatment of malnutrition in two high-complexity hospital centers in Bogotá, Colombia. METHODS: This is a multicenter case series (December 2016 to December 2020) including patients aged 1-59 months with a weight/height indicator less than -2 SD. Electronic health records were reviewed, and demographic (sex, age, city of origin, and socioeconomic status) and clinical data (gestational age at birth, edema, and nutrition status) were collected. Descriptive analysis of information was performed. An exploratory bivariate analysis by diagnostic categories of moderate and severe acute malnutrition vs days of hospitalization was also performed. RESULTS: Forty-five patients were included, 62.2% of whom were male, with a median age of 14 months (Q1-Q3: 7-24). The main etiologic factors of malnutrition were related to problems with total food intake (33.3%), transition in consistency of feeding (31.1%), and breastfeeding technique (22.2%). Only 13.3% had problems related to food insecurity. There were no statistically significant differences between moderate (median: 7 days; Q1-Q3: 5-12) and severe (median: 8 days; Q1-Q3: 5-16) acute malnutrition when compared by days of hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: The main etiologic factors of malnutrition in our study population were related to problems in the amount of food provided and transition in consistency of complementary feeding.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Facial Palsy (PFP) is a facial paralysis with various etiologies, including idiopathic causes (Bell's palsy), infections, trauma, and genetic factors. Traditional treatments involve antiviral medications, corticosteroids, and physiotherapy. However, new therapies, such as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), are emerging with promising results. METHODS: This case series reports on two patients with PFP treated with LLLT combined with Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 supplementation. The first case involved a 52-year-old female with PFP due to a viral infection. The second case was a 33-year-old male who developed PFP following a traumatic brain injury. Both patients received LLLT sessions every two weeks, targeting 10 points along the facial nerve pathway from the facial notch across the face. The laser device used was the Theraphy EC (DMC, Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil), with each point receiving 4 Joules of energy applied perpendicular to the skin after cleaning the face with water and soap to remove lipids that could interfere. The administration of Vitamin B was done using NEUROBIONTA tablets (Vitamin B1 + Vitamin B6 + Vitamin B12; Procter & Gamble, Santiago, Chile) with one tablet taken daily for 30 days. RESULTS: After six to seven sessions, both patients showed significant improvement in facial muscle function and overall facial symmetry. In the first case, improvements were noted in muscle tonicity and facial movements, with the patient reporting reduced facial disfigurement. In the second case, notable recovery in facial mobility and symmetry was observed, with the patient experiencing decreased paresthesia and restored muscle functionality. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that LLLT, combined with Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 supplementation, may effectively improve facial muscle function and symmetry in PFP patients. The non-invasive nature and ease of application make LLLT a viable option for PFP treatment. Further studies with larger sample sizes and standardized protocols are necessary to confirm these results and establish LLLT as a standard treatment for PFP.

ABSTRACT

Background: Ventricular arrhythmias are a leading cause of sudden death. The objective of this study was to characterise the results of patients with ventricular arrhythmias refractory to standard medical management, undergoing Video-assisted thoracoscopic cardiac sympathetic denervation (VAT-CSD) during 2012-2022 in Cali, Colombia. Methods: This was an observational retrospective study, using the Institutional General Thoracic Surgery Database for patient identification and retrospectively reviewing the clinical charts for data description and analysis. Results: Clinical records of 19 patients who underwent VAT-CSD for ventricular arrhythmia were analysed. The patients were predominantly male (73.7%) with an mean age of 62 years. Ischaemic heart disease was the main underlying condition (52.6%); all individuals had a diagnosis of heart failure, with comorbidities such as hypertension (63.1%), acute MI (57.8%) and diabetes (26.3%) also present. The procedure was performed bilaterally in 89.4% of cases and was successful with minimal perioperative complications. Postoperative follow-up showed improvement in symptoms, including a significant reduction in the number of ICD shocks and emergency department visits. Conclusion: VAT-CSD is a viable, safe and palliative therapeutic option for patients with ventricular arrhythmias who have not responded to conventional treatments, achieving a significant decrease in symptoms with low mortality and perioperative complications.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar foraminal stenosis is a common cause of chronic lower back pain and radiculopathy often treated by epidural steroid injections. In the absence of imaging findings with a positive physical exam demonstrating symptoms, percutaneous neuroplasty (PNP) may be an alternative to transforaminal epidural steroid injections that have otherwise failed. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases (55-year-old man and 65-year-old woman) with chronic low back pain and radiculopathy with otherwise normal imaging demonstrating no lumbar foraminal stenosis refractory to transforaminal epidural steroid injections. PNP was performed using reference spinal needles with both patients achieving sustained > 50-75% pain relief. CONCLUSION: PNP offers interventional chronic pain physicians and patients with refractory chronic low back pain with lumbar radiculopathy due to fibrosis an alternative, safe treatment that offers sustained results. Furthermore, this is the first of its kind to offer a step-by-step procedural step of PNP using a reference spinal needle.

Background: Combining osteotomies and soft tissue procedures is believed to reduce sesamoids in their anatomical position and maintain long-term correction when treating hallux valgus deformity. This study determines if a radiologic association exists between a radiolucent sign and a full percutaneous adductor tendon release (PATR), including a cadaveric study and a consecutive case series. Another aim was to determine the intra- and interobserver reliability of these observations. Methods: A prospective observational study was made between 2018 and 2019. First, a PATR was done on cadaveric specimens and, after the procedures, dissected to correlate what was seen fluoroscopically. The clinical group included 39 feet that presented mild-to-moderate HV deformity and were treated with percutaneous osteotomies associated with PATR. Results: Observers 1 and 2 saw a radioscopic radiolucent sign in 100% of cadavers and the patient population. They also observed a triangle-shaped image with an incidence of 75%, which we have named the "triangle sign." Conclusion: The triangle sign may be helpful in the intraoperative confirmation of PATR and latero-plantar capsule release using this percutaneous technique. ABSTRACT

Background: Treating hyperthyroidism induced by autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs) through radioactive iodine and surgery often results in undesirable hypothyroidism. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has arisen as a favorable option. European guidelines recommend RFA for small AFTN in young patients, aiming to restore normal thyroid function and avoid irradiation. The procedure, costing between 500 and 1,000 euros, is conducted in outpatient clinics and takes 15 to 40 minutes. We aimed to describe the clinical outcomes of AFTN patients treated with RFA in Ecuador. Case Description: We included eight patients with toxic thyroid nodules suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), with symptomatic hyperthyroidism. The mean age was 41.63 years [standard deviation (SD): 14.97 years]. The median follow-up time was 8 months. Nodules were solid (37.5%) or predominantly solid (62.5%). The mean volume pre-RFA was 5.27 mL [interquartile range (IQR), 0.70-9.66 mL]. After ablation, the median volumes at 1, 3, and 6 months were [2.25 (SD: 1.67; P<0.12), 1.28 (SD: 1.1; P=0.013), and 1.37 (SD: 1; P=0.23) mL], respectively. The volume reduction (VR) was 45.8%, 75.1%, and 69.7% at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up, respectively. Conclusions: RFA holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for managing AFTNs. The success and the feasibility of RFA in this series are consistent with other studies as a treatment option in young patients with small AFTN. However, more research is needed to establish comprehensive guidelines and protocols to maximize the benefits of RFA in AFTNs.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Hepatoblastoma is the most common malignant primary liver tumor in the pediatric population, accounting for 67% of cases in the United States. Surgical resection is the only curative treatment option; however, it can be performed in only 10% of patients with primary tumors. The two most common limitations for resection are the need for extensive resections and tumors in central locations. The therapeutic hypertrophy of healthy tissue achieved with ALPPS (Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for Staged Hepatectomy) enables larger resections and has been successfully employed in the pediatric population in recent years. Objective: To present three cases of patients with centrally located PRETEXT II or III hepatoblastomas who underwent ALPPS procedure as a viable therapeutic alternative to liver transplantation. Discussion and results: Central PRETEXT III hepatoblastomas are typically indications for liver transplantation. Transplantation offers high five-year survival rates (73%). However, the associated morbidity, healthcare system costs, and limited availability make it necessary to explore alternative options. Series have reported the successful application of the ALPPS procedure in PRETEXT II and PRETEXT III hepatoblastomas in other locations. Therapeutically induced hypertrophy, characterized by an increase in the volume of healthy tissue in unaffected lobes or segments, enabled the resection of previously deemed unresectable lesions. The patients experienced uncomplicated postoperative courses and expected reduction in tumor markers. Chemotherapy selection followed the guidelines outlined in Block C of the SIOPEL IV protocol. Conclusions: ALPPS hepatectomy is a viable therapeutic option for patients with centrally located PRETEXT III or II hepatoblastomas.

Introduction: Status asthmaticus (SA) and near-fatal asthma (NFA) are life-threatening conditions that continue to present a management challenge for physicians. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) has been employed as a last resort in treating these patients. Case presentation: We described six patients who were admitted to the ICU for NFA and received ECMO treatment at a high-complexity institution in Cali, Colombia, between 2015 and 2019. All patients are registered in the ELSO registry. Baseline patient characteristics, arterial blood gases (ABG), ventilatory parameters, and complications were collected as specified in the ELSO registry form. Efficacy was analyzed in terms of the improvement in respiratory acidosis, the number of ventilator-free days (VFD), and a reduction in mechanical power (MP). MP, which refers to the energy associated with the mechanical forces involved in breathing and the functioning of the respiratory system, was calculated using a mathematical formula. Safety was evaluated based on the incidence of complications. After 12 hours of ECMO, we achieved a correction of respiratory acidosis, a significant decrease in all ventilatory parameters, and a reduction in MP ranging from 52.8% to 89%. There was one mortality. Among the five surviving patients, all except one, who required a tracheostomy, had a high VFD score, with a mode of 26 days, demonstrating a reduction in ventilation time. Conclusion: Further randomized controlled trials are needed to fully understand the efficacy and safety profiles of ECMO in SA/NFA. MP is being widely used to achieve safer ventilation, and although more data is required, it appears to be a promising option for evaluating the risk of developing VILI and the success of the therapy.

Background: The presence of severe aortic stenosis in quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is an extremely rare combination, and it is unknown whether transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a safe option due to the low incidence. Case summary: We present two patients diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis with QAV morphology type 1 (Nakamura classification). All patients presented to our hospital for evaluation because of worsening functional class, dyspnoea, or syncope. During tomographic planning, the aortic annulus was measured at the level of the deepest sinus for the selection of the number of devices. Due to the presence of four cusps, the smallest cusp was excluded, and three sinuses were virtualized for placement of the pigtail catheter during the procedure. Without complications, a 23 mm Edwards SAPIEN 3 was deployed through the femoral artery in both patients. Control aortography showed no valve leakage or regurgitation. Discussion: In patients with QAV and aortic stenosis undergoing TAVR, similar to the tricuspid valve, tomographic planning can be used to ensure the success of the procedure. However, unlike the tricuspid valve, where the selection of the device number is based on the measurements of the aortic annulus at the level of the non-coronary sinus, in these QAV cases, we perform the measurements at the level of the deepest aortic sinus (right coronary sinus).

This retrospective case series aims to describe the ophthalmic manifestations of the Monkeypox virus infection in seven patients evaluated in two countries of South America (Colombia and Brazil). Two had skin lesions in the eyelid, and five had conjunctivitis. None had intraocular involvement. Three of seven patients had a history of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, and all patients had lesions in the genital region, suggesting sexual-contact transmission. In 6 of 7 cases, conjunctival RT-PCR was positive for the Monkeypox virus, including one case without conjunctival vesicles. In all cases, lesions resolved without complications, and just two required antiviral treatment. All patients demonstrated improvement without complications. RT-PCR positivity in conjunctiva demonstrated the presence of the Monkeypox virus, suggesting that ocular-mediated transmission could be plausible. Ophthalmologists should be aware of this ophthalmic manifestation.

BACKGROUND: Connective tissue graft substitutes have been used widely to overcome autogenous graft limitations. Nevertheless, they do not provide comparable results in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant soft tissue defects. Based on the principles of tissue-engineered materials, injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) has been combined with collagen matrices (CMs) to enhance their clinical efficacy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case series demonstrating the use of i-PRF for the biofunctionalization of a volume-stable collagen matrix (VCMX) as an adjunct to coronally advanced flap (CAF) to treat single gingival recession (GR) defects. METHODS & RESULTS: The study included 10 patients. Bleeding on probing, probing depth, GR height, clinical attachment level, esthetics, and dentin hypersensitivity were evaluated. After 6 months, a significant GR reduction (RecRed: 2.15 ± 0.7 mm; p = 0.005) and percentage of root coverage (% RC) of 81.13% were observed. Additionally, 40% of the sites showed complete root coverage. Gingival thickness increased 0.64 mm. Patient-centered evaluations demonstrated dentin hypersensitivity and esthetics improvements by the end of follow-up. CONCLUSION: VCMX biofunctionalized with i-PRF associated with CAF technique showed promising clinical outcomes in the treatment of single RT1 GR defects.

Background: The present article describes three cases of patients in cardiogenic shock (CS) with previous cardiac surgery that made them initially inoperable. Perioperative support with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) improved haemodynamic status and results in these high-risk patients. Case summary: Case 1 is a 57-year-old male morbidly obese with previous aortic valve replacement (AVR) who presented with chest pain and developed cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and femoral VA-ECMO were initiated. Three days later, a redo AVR was performed. Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was maintained for 12 days, followed by 7 days of veno-venous ECMO for complete recovery. Case 2 features a 39-year-old male with two previous mitral valve replacements (MVRs). The first is due to papillary muscle rupture, and the second is due to endocarditis of the mitral prosthesis. He presented with CS and pulmonary oedema. Emergency surgery was performed and the patient was then placed in VA-ECMO. Weaning off was achieved 3 days after surgery. Case 3 is a 21-year-old female with a previous MVR due to rheumatic disease. She presented with CS, severe mitral prosthesis stenosis, and a pulmonary embolism. Femoral VA-ECMO was initiated, and one day later, she underwent a redo MVR operation. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was discontinued 4 days later. Discussion: Dysfunctional prosthetic valves leading to CS may benefit from a redo cardiac operation supported by a perioperative VA-ECMO to optimize haemodynamic status. Despite the results from risk prediction scores, this approach has the potential to reduce operative mortality in initial inoperable patients and allow a definitive redo cardiac surgery.

Objetivo: La sífilis es una enfermedad de transmisión sexual con una incidencia creciente a nivel mundial. En la sí- filis secundaria, las lesiones orales son frecuentes, siendo a veces la única manifestación. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar una serie de casos clínicos de sífilis con localización predominante o exclusivamente gingival, destacando las ca- racterísticas clínicas más relevantes para su diagnóstico. Casos clínicos: Esta serie de casos clínicos incluyó nueve casos de sífilis secundaria con manifestaciones gingi- vales. El diagnóstico se realizó mediante pruebas serológicas (VDRL, TPPA, FTA-ABS y MHA-TP), y se describieron le- siones tanto gingivales como extragingivales. En la encía se observó sífilis secundaria afectando principalmente la región anterior ­tanto superior como inferior­, presentándose pla- cas rojas o blancas. Algunos casos también presentaban le- siones en otros sitios intraorales, tenían síntomas como dolor o sensación de ardor, o presentaban enfermedad periodontal dependiente de placa. El diagnóstico diferencial de sífilis se- cundaria gingival con condiciones periodontales inespecíficas es fundamental para un diagnóstico adecuado. Por lo tanto, se debe considerar el diagnóstico de sífilis secundaria cuando se enfrentan casos gíngivo-periodontales atípicos en la práctica diaria (AU)


Aim: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease with growing incidence worldwide. In secondary syphilis, oral le- sions are common, sometimes being the only manifestation. Gingival features of syphilis are rare and usually present mul- tiple oral lesions. The aim of this article is to present a series of clinical cases of syphilis with predominantly or exclusively gingival localization, highlighting the most relevant clinical characteristics for its diagnosis. Clinical cases: This clinical case series included nine cases of secondary syphilis with gingival manifestations. The diagnosis was made using serological tests (VDRL, TPPA, FTA-ABS, and MHA-TP), and both gingival and extragingi- val lesions were described. Secondary syphilis was observed in the gum, mainly affecting the anterior region ­both up- per and lower­, depicting red or white plaques. Some cases also presented lesions in other intraoral sites, had symptoms such as pain or burning sensation, or showed plaque induced periodontal disease. The differential diagnosis of second- ary syphilis considering non-specific periodontal conditions with gingival involvement is essential for a proper diagnosis. Thus, the diagnosis of secondary syphilis should be consid- ered when dealing with atypical gingivo-periodontal cases in everyday practice (AU)

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective case series aimed to assess the stability of the papilla around four single crowns supported by narrow-diameter implants replacing all maxillary incisors. Secondary objectives included assessment of marginal bone level stability, incidence of technical and biological complications, and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals with four adjacent implants in maxillary incisor sites, placed with a 3 mm inter-implant distance and rehabilitated with single crowns were included. Retrospective data were obtained from photographs and radiographs taken at the delivery of the prosthesis (baseline-T0). Patients were then recalled (≥2 years after T0) for clinical and radiographic examination (follow-up-T1). Photographs were obtained and patient satisfaction was assessed using a visual analogue scale. Papilla height and marginal bone level were compared over time. RESULTS: Data from 10 patients with medium-low smile lines and rehabilitated with 40 implants, in function for 5.4 ± 1.9 years, were analyzed. The papilla height between implants (T0: 2.3 ± 0.9 mm; T1: 2.6 ± 0.7 mm; p = .011) and between tooth and implant (T0: 3.4 ± 0.9 mm; T1: 3.8 ± 0.8 mm; p = .025) increased significantly over the years. The marginal bone level remained stable over time (T0: 0.88 ± 0.57 mm; T1: 0.71 ± 0.67 mm; p = .007). Patients were highly satisfied (97.7 ± 0.3%) with the treatment outcome. CONCLUSION: Within its limitations, this study demonstrated that four single implant-supported crowns placed at maxillary incisor sites may exhibit soft tissue and marginal bone stability over a long period of time. This treatment approach, however, should be restricted to few patients as it requires a proper case selection and skillful execution of all surgical and prosthetic steps.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN El informe de caso o los informes de series de casos son estudios descriptivos. Pese a que su resultado no se emplea para realizar inferencias, son la primera línea de evidencia de las terapias nuevas y un preámbulo de investigaciones con diseño metodológico idóneo. Este tipo de estudio es fundamental para describir enfermedades nuevas o inusitadas, eventos adversos o complicaciones de las patologías conocidas. Se han convertido en un medio de comunicación elemental y accesible para los profesionales de la salud. De igual forma, son un material pedagógico adecuado para fomentar habilidades de escritura e intervención, principalmente para los investigadores novicios. Además de fortalecer la academia, estimulan la difusión del conocimiento y ayudan a resolver los dilemas de la práctica clínica. También son una herramienta básica para el inicio y el mantenimiento de la investigación, por lo que seguirán vigentes como medio de comunicación y de enlace del conocimiento médico. En consecuencia, es importante conocer su definición, su estructura y su papel en la literatura médica y en la investigación. En esta revisión se proporcionan los elementos necesarios para tener en cuenta cuando se va a publicar una metodología de este tipo de estudio.


A B S T R A C T Case reports or case series reports are descriptive studies, although their results are not used to make inferences, they are the first line of evidence for new therapies and a preamble to research with a stronger methodological design. This type of study is essential to describe new or unusual diseases, adverse events, or complications of known pathologies. They have become an elementary and accessible means of communication for health professionals. They are also pedagogical material to promote writing and intervention skills, mainly for novice researchers. This type of study strengthens academia, stimulates the spread of know ledge, and helps to resolve the dilemmas of clinical practice. In addition, they are a basic tool for the initiation and maintenance of research, so they will remain updated as a means of communication and linkage to medical knowledge. Therefore, it is important to know their definition, structure and role in the medical literature and research. This review provides the elements to consider when publishing a methodology for this type of study.

Background: Congenital aortic diseases (CAoD) encompass a wide variety of disorders that range from asymptomatic findings to life-threatening conditions. Multiple imaging techniques are available for the assessment of CAoD. Case summary: We present seven case reports of congenital aortic diseases, including obstructions in the aortic arch (coarctation, hypoplasia, and interruption) and vascular rings, in which the clinical manifestations throughout the cases are discussed, highlighting the heterogeneity of the symptoms. Discussion: Multi-imaging techniques are indispensable for the assessment of CAoD, where cardiac computed tomography angiography is the main modality for rapid acquisition of three-dimensional volume-rendered images for optimal surgical planning.

ABSTRACT

Currently, mal de débarquement syndrome (MdDS) has been reported only among adults. This case series describes 3 pediatric patients with MdDS. MdDS presentation in children is similar to that of adults, although the frequency of comorbid conditions is greater. Diagnostic delays are common and likely due to under-recognition of MdDS among children.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim was to describe the effects of the use of citric acid in the healing process of chronic leprosy wounds. Approach: This is a case series, carried out with 5 people with chronic leprosy wounds, under continuous care in an outpatient center wound care in the center-south region of Brazil. The intervention protocol consisted of topical application of 3% citric acid (ointment), on the wound bed, in a thin layer of approximately 2 mm, on alternate days, and followed up for a total period of 8 weeks and secondary coverage rayon and gauze. The cases were analyzed regarding wound dimensions, histology and clinical observation. Results: It was observed in all cases better aspect of the wound bed, presence of granulation tissue and decrease of the inflammatory process with predominance of lymphocytes, reduction of bacterial colonies, increase and verticalization of type I collagen fibers, reduction of type III collagen and increased areas of epithelialization. Innovation: There was also a reduction in the level of pain and exudation after the treatment protocol. Conclusions: Therefore, the use of citric acid in leprosy neuropathic wounds is promising and may be a treatment option, considering its cost, clinical management and possible effect on the chronic inflammatory process.

BACKGROUND: Malaria-endemic areas are not spared from the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), leading to co-infection scenarios where overlapping symptoms impose serious diagnostic challenges. Current knowledge on Plasmodium spp. and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) co-infection in pregnant women remains limited, especially in Latin America, where Plasmodium vivax infection is highly prevalent. METHODS: This is a case series of five pregnant women with P. vivax and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection hospitalized in two main malaria referral centers of the Capital District and Bolivar state, Venezuela between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2021. RESULTS: Clinical and laboratory data from five pregnant women with a mean age of 22 years were analyzed; three of them were in the third trimester of pregnancy. Comorbidities included obesity in two cases, hypertension in one, and asthma in one. Three out of five patients had severe to critical COVID-19 disease. Dry cough, fever, chills, and headache were the most frequent symptoms reported. Laboratory analyses showed elevated aspartate/alanine aminotransferase and creatinine levels, thrombocytopenia, and severe anemia as the most relevant abnormalities. The mean period between symptom onset and a positive molecular test for SARS-CoV-2 infection or positive microscopy for Plasmodium spp. was 4.8 ± 2.5 days and 2.8 ± 1.6 days, respectively. The mean hospital stay was 5.4 ± 7 days. Three women recovered and were discharged from the hospital. Two women died, one from cerebral malaria and one from respiratory failure. Three adverse fetal outcomes were registered, two miscarriages and one stillbirth. CONCLUSION: This study documented a predominance of severe/critical COVID-19 disease and a high proportion of adverse maternal-fetal outcomes among pregnant women with malaria and COVID-19 co-infection. More comprehensive prospective cohort studies are warranted to explore the risk factors, management challenges, and clinical outcomes of pregnant women with this co-infection.
