ABSTRACT

Improvements in race times for male and female Para canoe athletes across different sports classes have led to a reduction in relative differences between classes over time. However, there is a lack of research examining the comparative developmental trajectories between high-performance Paralympic (PCS) and Olympic (OCS) canoe sprint. In this study, we compared the developmental trajectories of 200-meter kayak performances among PCS and OCS athletes. In total, we analyzed 628 race results obtained from public online databases, for nine competitions between 2015 and 2023. Race times were reduced over the years except in specific sports classes (KL3-M, K1-M, and K1-F; KL: Kayak Level, M: male, F: female), with a poor positive correlation (r = 0.17 to 0.33) between time and the years. For the remaining sports classes, these correlations ranged from poor to fair (r = -0.58 to -0.13). OCS K1 athletes outperformed their Paralympic counterparts. Among Paralympic classes, KL1 had slower times than KL2 and KL3 (p ≤ .05), with KL2 times significantly lower than KL3 in the female category. OCS athletes exhibited less variability in race times compared to PCS athletes. In the male category, there were no significant differences in the coefficients of variation (CV) and amplitude of race times between sport classes, except for KL1-M, which had a larger CV than K1 (p ≤ .05). In the female category, the CV and amplitude of race times were significantly higher in KL1-F compared to KL3-F and K1-F. OCS times remained stable from 2015, with KL3-M following a similar trend. PCS displayed greater race time variability, particularly in higher impairment classes, notably KL1. This underscores the existence of distinct developmental stages within the canoe sprint modality, particularly emphasizing the early developmental phase of KL1. It also provides valuable insights for coaches and sports selection, especially concerning athletes with more severe impairments, including those in Rehabilitation Centers and during athlete recruitment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence of food insecurity among child and adolescent athletics practitioners and to investigate factors associated with exercise performance, dietary habits, body composition, sleep, and socioeconomic status based on food security status. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, between June and July 2023. The convenience sample included children and adolescents (7-17 y old) of both sexes. We evaluated exercise performance, household food insecurity (HFI), dietary-related parameters, and other body composition, lifestyle, and social-related variables. Exercise performance was assessed using the counter movement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), horizontal long jump (HLJ), 50-m sprint test (50-m ST) and throwing strength test (TST). The assessment of HFI was conducted using the food insecurity experience scale (FIES). Comparisons and associations were investigated based on food security status. RESULTS: The total sample size was comprised of 138 children (n = 42; 30.4%) and adolescents (n = 96; 69.6%). We found an association between food security status and sex (X2(138,1) = 4.42; P = 0.036). SJ was higher in the food security group than in the HFI group (t(117) = 2.112; P = 0.037; ES = 0.39). Sleep- and dietary-related factors did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the prevalence of HFI among child and adolescent athletics participants was approximately 40%. Regarding exercise performance, SJ was better in the food security group than in the HFI group. Concerning dietary-related data, the HFI group had a lower number of meals per day than the food security group, and other dietary data did not differ between the groups. Body composition and sleep-related parameters were similar between the groups.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study compared the frequency, number of goals and attack efficiency in temporal numerical superiority among winning and losing teams and among balanced and unbalanced matches in a junior men's water polo competition. Another analysed relationship was that between a balanced or unbalanced final score and the efficiency at scoring goals in numerical superiority in the winning teams' games. A total of 56 matches from the Pan-American Junior Men's Water Polo championship was analysed. The teams were categorised as losers or winners and the match results were classified as balanced or unbalanced. The chi-squared and Mann-Whitney tests were used for statistical treatment. There is no significant difference in the occurrence of numerical superiority between winners and losers (p = 0.25) despite the winners scoring more goals (p = 0.002) and being more efficient (p < 0.001). There is no significant difference in the occurrence of numerical superiority (p = 0.81) and goals (p = 0.03) in balanced and unbalanced matches. However, there tends to be a higher shot efficiency (p = 0.01) in unbalanced matches. A significant relationship exists (p = 0.04) between the winning teams' efficiency at scoring goals in a situation of numerical superiority and an unbalanced score.


RESUMO Esse estudo teve por objetivo comparar a frequência, a quantidade de gols e a eficiência do ataque em superioridade numérica temporal entre equipes vencedoras e perdedoras e entre partidas equilibradas e desequilibradas em competição júnior de polo aquático masculino. Também foi testada a relação entre a ocorrência do placar equilibrado ou desequilibrado com a eficiência em realizar gols em superioridade numérica nos jogos das equipes vencedoras. Foram analisadas 56 partidas do Campeonato Pan Americano Júnior de Polo Aquático Masculino. As equipes foram classificadas como perdedoras ou vencedoras e o resultado da partida como equilibrado ou desequilibrado. Teste Mann-Whitney e o qui-quadrado foram utilizados. Não há diferença significativa na ocorrência de superioridade numérica entre vencedores e perdedores (p = 0,25) apesar dos vencedores fazerem mais gols (p = 0,002) e serem mais eficientes (p < 0,001). Não há diferença significativa na ocorrência de superioridade numérica (p = 0,81) e de gols (p = 0,03) nas partidas equilibradas e desequilibradas. Entretanto, nas partidas desequilibradas encontrou-se maior eficiência no arremesso (p = 0,01). Foi encontrado relação significativa (p = 0,04) entre a eficácia das equipes vencedoras em realizar gol em superioridade numérica com o placar desequilibrado.

RESUMEN La Dermatoglifia ha sido utilizada como herramienta para identificar la relación de esta con las capacidades físicas dentro de diferentes tipos de disciplinas deportivas. El presente documento tuvo como objetivo, identificar los hallazgos de investigaciones a nivel mundial, mostrando los resultados existentes entre los dermatoglifos y la capacidad de la fuerza en el rendimiento deportivo. Método: la búsqueda incluye publicaciones en revistas indexadas en los idiomas inglés, portugués y español. Se utilizaron las siguientes bases de datos: Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, Pubmed, Sportdiscus, Science Direct y Biblioteca Regional de Salud, para la búsqueda de información se definieron varias palabras clave. Se realizó la búsqueda y luego la revisión, donde se identificaron 56 artículos, de los cuales seis cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Resultados y conclusiones: se evidenció que la mayor parte de investigaciones son casos y controles, algunos con altos niveles de sesgo por eso su clasificación fue de 2+ y 3 (Escala SIGN). Los resultados en esta revisión sustentan la relación entre la predominancia del patrón de Presilla y el desarrollo de la fuerza sin discriminar tipo de deporte, género y edad de los practicantes, país de procedencia, composición corporal o características genéticas.


ABSTRACT Dermatoglyphics have been used as a tool to identify its relationship with physical capacities within different types of sports disciplines. The present document aimed to identify research findings worldwide, showing the existing results between dermatoglyphics and the force capacity in sports performance. Method: The search includes publications in indexed journals in the English, Portuguese and Spanish languages. The following databases were used: Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, Pubmed, Sportdiscus, Science Direct and Regional Health Library, for the information search several key words were defined. The search and then the review were carried out, where 56 articles were identified, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. Results and conclusions: It was evidenced that most of the investigations are cases and controls, some with high levels of bias, which is why their classification was 2+ and 3 (SIGN Scale). The results in this review support the relationship between the predominance of the Clip pattern and the development of strength without discriminating type of sport, gender and age of the practitioners, country of origin, body composition or genetic characteristics.

ABSTRACT

In Paralympic judo for athletes with vision impairment (VI judo) all eligible athletes (i.e. B1, B2 and B3 classes) compete against each other in the same competition. Evidence suggests that athletes with more impairment may be disadvantaged, but that more sensitive measures of performance are necessary to understand the impact of impairment on performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Para sport class and technical variation, time-motion variables, and performance in Paralympic judo. All 175 judo matches from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games were analysed across 129 competitors (82 male and 47 female). The main results indicated that athletes who demonstrated less technical variation also experienced less competitive success, with the functionally blind athletes (class B1) demonstrating less technical variation than partially sighted (class B2 and B3) athletes (p < 0.05). There was no difference in the time-motion variables between sport classes (p > 0.05). We conclude that measures of technical variation are sensitive to differences in impairment and are suitable for studies that investigate the impairment-performance relationship in VI judo. Results further confirm that some athletes with impairment are disadvantaged under the current rules of VI judo.

ABSTRACT Introduction: High-performance athletes often undergo periods of exhaustive training and insufficient recovery, which can lead to decreased performance, but it is not clear whether there are any differences between the sexes in the level of habitual physical activity, sedentary time or sleep quantity and quality in young highly trained badminton athletes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the habitual physical activity (PA), sedentary time and sleep quantity and quality of highly trained young male and female badminton athletes and non-athletes. Methods: Twenty-seven young badminton athletes and twenty-one non-athletes (control group) were recruited. Sleep duration and quality (total time in bed, total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency and latency), total counts, vigorous activity time and sedentary time were measured using a tri-axial accelerometer. Results: Male athletes spent less sedentary time (p=0.028), more time in vigorous activity (p=0.016) and had higher total counts (p<0.001) than the male control group. There were no significant differences in sedentary time (p=0.702) or vigorous activity time (p=0.205) between the female athletes and non-athletes, but the female athletes accumulated higher total counts than the female control group (p=0.003). There were no significant differences between the sexes or groups for time in bed, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset and latency (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Among males but not females, young highly trained badminton athletes had less sedentary time and more time in vigorous activity than the non-athletes, however, there were no significant differences between the sexes or groups in sleep quantity and quality. RESUMEN Introducción: Los atletas de alto rendimiento con frecuencia son sometidos a períodos de entrenamiento exhaustivo y recuperación insuficiente, lo que puede llevar a una disminución del desempeño, pero no está claro si hay diferencia entre los sexos en cuanto al nivel de actividad física habitual, tiempo sedentario, cantidad y calidad del sueño en jóvenes atletas de bádminton altamente entrenados. Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio fue comparar la actividad física habitual (AF), el tiempo de sedentarismo y la duración y calidad del sueño en jóvenes atletas de bádminton altamente entrenados y de no atletas, del sexo femenino y masculino. Métodos: Fueron reclutados veintisiete jóvenes atletas de bádminton y veintiuno no atletas (grupo control). La duración y la calidad del sueño (tiempo total en la cama, tiempo total de sueño, vigilia después del inicio del sueño, eficiencia y latencia del sueño), counts totales, el tiempo en actividad vigorosa y el tiempo de sedentarismo fueron medidos con un acelerómetro triaxial. Resultados: Los atletas del sexo masculino tuvieron menos tiempo de sedentarismo (p = 0,028), más tiempo de actividad vigorosa (p = 0,016) y mayor cantidad de counts totales (p <0,001) que el grupo control masculino. No hubo diferencias significativas en el tiempo de sedentarismo (p = 0,702) o tiempo de actividad vigorosa (p = 0,205), entre las atletas y no atletas, pero las atletas del sexo femenino acumularon mayor cantidad de counts totales que el grupo control femenino (p = 0,003). BACKGROUND: The top 10 athletes in the International Association of Athletic Federations in 100-m and 400-m ranking for each sex were assessed for their history of race times before achieving their personal record (PR). The main goal of this study was to create a new method for optimal performance improvement rate assessment for coaches and athletes aiming the World Record. METHODS: The difference between PR ('current' season) and the best race time in the last season was defined as the first season improvement rate (1-SIR), whereas the average improvement rate in the last and preceding seasons was the multi-season improvement rate (M-SIR). 1-SIR and M-SIR were calculated for each athlete. RESULTS: The sex comparison for the 100 m event showed a significant difference in the M-SIR in favor of women. No statistical differences were identified for the 400 m event, with a trivial effect in both 1-SIR and M-SIR. CONCLUSIONS: As a practical applicability, graph plots were designed to help verifying the improvement rate of athletes and to evaluate whether a long-term training strategy induced an acceptable performance improvement or whether some adjustments needed and check within the plots if the improvement rate is within the average of the top-10 athletes of their event.

ABSTRACT Differences in chronological age within an age group are known as Relative Age (RA), and their consequences to athletic performance are referred to as Relative Age Effect (RAE). The RAE among athletes is believed to affect their competitive success in several ways, even in adulthood. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the RAE on all judo fighters competing nationally in 2013, by age category and competitive performance. A total of 862 male and 637 female athletes participated in this research. The chi-squared test was used for comparing observed and expected values among quartiles, adopting p < 0.05 as significance. A Bonferroni post hoc analysis was employed to identify where significant differences were (adjusted p < 0.00417). Results showed significant differences in the male under-15 category (Q2 in G1: OV = 17; EV = 9.7; p = 0.001) and male under-23 category (Q1 in G3: OV = 37; VE = 10.1; p < 0.0001). In conclusion, RAE was identified only in male athletes. However, there were major discrepancies between athletes born in the first semester and those born in the second semester.


RESUMO A diferença da idade cronológica em uma faixa etária é chamada de Idade Relativa (IR) e suas consequências no desempenho de atletas é chamada de Efeito da Idade Relativa (EIR). Acredita-se que o EIR entre atletas pode afetar o sucesso competitivo de diversas maneiras, até mesmo na idade adulta. Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o EIR em todos os competidores de judô das competições nacionais do ano de 2013, fazendo-se a diferenciação por categorias etárias e o desempenho competitivo. Fizeram parte da presente investigação 862 atletas do sexo masculino e 637 do sexo feminino. O qui-quadrado foi empregado para comparar os valores observados e esperados entre quartis, adotando-se significância como p < 0,05. Uma análise post hoc de Bonferroni foi utilizada para identificar onde estavam as diferenças significativas (p ajustado < 0,00417). Os resultados mostraram diferença significativa nas categorias sub-15 masculino (Q2 em G1: VO = 17; VE = 9,7; p = 0,001) e sub-23 masculino (Q1 em G3: VO = 37; VE = 10,1; p < 0,0001). Em conclusão, o EIR foi identificado apenas em atletas do sexo masculino. Contudo, houve grande discrepância entre atletas nascidos no primeiro semestre e atletas nascidos no segundo semestre.

ABSTRACT The aims of the current study were: (a) to construct a reference table for burnout in soccer athletes of the U-20 category and (b) to verify the individual oscillations in the perception of these athletes in relation to burnout over three periods of the sports season. In total, 53 U-20 soccer athletes participated. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire, Brazilian version, was applied to athletes during training, competition, and vacation periods of the sports season. A reference table was built for under-20 soccer athletes for each assessment period. Fluctuations were observed in the mean values of the total burnout frequency of the athletes during the 3 periods: training ( X ¯=1.35 ± 0.13 and X ¯=2.11 ± 0.19), competition ( X ¯=1.26 ± 0.13 and X ¯=2.27 ± 0.24), and vacation ( X ¯=1.27 ± 0.14 and X ¯= 2.18 ± 0.28). Based on this table and the individual classification of each athlete, it was observed that 32 athletes presented fluctuations in the perception of burnout during the sports season and 21 athletes did not present fluctuations in feelings of burnout during the three evaluation periods. The period with the highest number of athletes (n = 17) with a high level of burnout was the training period. It is concluded that it is not possible to establish a single and collective behavior regarding the fluctuations in burnout levels in athletes of the U-20 category during a sports season, and that the category reference table contributes to greater accuracy of the burnout evaluation in each period in the season.


RESUMO Os objetivos deste estudo foram (a) construir uma tabela de referência para o burnout em atletas de futebol da categoria sub-20 e (b) verificar as oscilações individuais na percepção destes atletas em relação ao burnout ao longo de três períodos da temporada esportiva. Participaram 53 atletas de futebol da categoria sub-20. Foi utilizado o Questionário de Burnout para Atleta nos períodos de treinamento, competição e férias durante uma temporada esportiva. Foi construída uma tabela de referência do burnout para atletas de futebol da categoria sub-20 para cada período avaliado. Foram encontradas oscilações nos valores médios da frequência do burnout total dos atletas durante os 3 períodos: treinamento( X ¯=1,35±0,13 e X ¯=2,11±0,19), competição ( X ¯=1,26±0,13 e X ¯=2,27±0,24) e férias ( X ¯=1,27±0,14 e X ¯=2,18±0,28).Baseado na tabela de referência e na classificação individual de cada atleta observou-se que 32 atletas apresentaram oscilações na percepção de burnout durante a temporada esportiva e 21 atletas não apresentaram oscilações nos sentimentos de burnout ao longo dos 3 períodos de avaliação. O período que teve o maior número de atletas (n=17) com alto nível de burnout foi o de treinamento. Conclui-se que não é possível estabelecer um comportamento único e coletivo a respeito das oscilações dos níveis de burnout em atletas da categoria sub-20 durante uma temporada esportiva e que a tabela de referência da categoria contribui para uma maior acertibilidade da avaliação do burnout em cada período da temporada.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO O treinamento de forca (TF) com supervisão pode afetar a carga total levantada (CTL), o número total de repetições (NTR), o tempo líquido sob tensão (TLT) e a percepção subjetiva de esforço (PSE) em indivíduos experientes em TF. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da supervisão do personal trainer na sessão de indivíduos experientes em TF. Quinze homens (20,0±2 anos; 176,0±4 cm; 79,3±4,7 kg) experientes com o TF realizaram duas sessões compostas com exercícios para o corpo todo. Na sessão sem supervisão do personal trainer (SPT) os sujeitos auto selecionaram as intensidades utilizadas nos exercícios e foram orientados à "selecionar a sobrecarga que eles tipicamente utilizam para realizar 10 repetições"; na sessão com a supervisão do personal trainer (CPT) os sujeitos auto selecionaram as intensidades utilizadas nos exercícios e foram orientados à "realizar o máximo de esforço possível". Foi observada maior CTL (P<0,001, Δ%=30), NTR (P<0,001, Δ%=29), TLT (P=0,003, Δ%=21) e PSE (P<0,001, Δ%=29) na sessão de TF. O presente estudo concluiu que as sessões com supervisão de um personal trainer afetam positivamente as variáveis do treinamento.


ABSTRACT Supervised resistance training may affect several acute variables such as volume load (VL), the maximum number of repetitions (NRM), time under tension (TUT), and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) in resistance trained-men. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of the personal trainer's supervision on a resistance training session in resistance trained-men. Fifteen resistance-trained men (20,0±2 years; 176,0±4 cm; 79,3±4,7 kg) performed two training sessions composed of whole-body exercises. In the session without personal trainer's supervision (NPT) the subjects self-selected their loads for each exercise and were oriented to "select a load typically employed to perform 10 repetitions"; in the session with personal trainer's supervision (WPT) the subjects self-selected their loads for each exercise and were oriented to "perform maximum effort". It was observed greater VL (P<0,001, Δ%=30), NRM (P<0,001, Δ%=29), TUT (P=0,003, Δ%=21), and RPE (P<0,001, Δ%=29) in the resistance training session WPT. The present study concluded that supervised sessions positively affect resistance training variables.

ABSTRACT

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a carga de treinamento em três tipos de treinamentos de uma equipe de voleibol profissional.. Participaram do estudo 28 jogadores (26,6 ± 4,7 anos; 91,5 ± 8,5 Kg; 194,1 ± 6,0 cm). Foi realizada uma análise descritiva de 29 sessões de treino técnico, 84 tecnico-tático e 75 de musculação e isoladamente das variáveis que compõem a carga de treinamento, PSE e o tempo de duração da sessão, posteriormente sendo reunidos em média e desvio padrão de acordo com tipo de treino. Para análise dos dados foi adotado o teste de Shapiro-Wilk e em seguida aplicou-se o teste Anova Two-Way com o Post Hoc de Tamhane e também foi utilizado o tamanho do efeito para análise das comparações. Os resultados demonstraram respostas significativas e grande tamanho de efeitos quando comparados técnico e técnico-tático com a musculação na carga interna de treinamento TxM (TE=1,2: grande; p= 0,002); TTxM (TE=1,3: grande; p= 0,001) e no tempo de duração da sessão TxM (TE=1,7: grande; p= 0,001); TTxM (TE=2,0: grande; p= 0,001), já a PSE da sessão apresentou apenas uma diferença sigifcativa TTxM (TE= 0,8: moderado; p= 0,001). Os estímulos de treinamentos específicos de quadra como técnico e técnico-tático promoveram maior carga interna nos atletas do que o treino de força, através principalmente pela influencia da variável tempo de duração da sessão que refletiu a carga externa.


ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare the training load in three types of training of a professional volleyball team. Participants were 28 players (26.6 ± 4.7 years, 91.5 ± 8.5 kg; 194.1 ± 6.0 cm). A descriptive analysis of 29 technical training sessions, 84 technical-tactical training sessions and 75 training sessions, and of the variables that compose the training load, PSE and the duration of the session were performed, and were then collected on average and standard deviation according to with type of training. To analyze the data, the Shapiro-Wilk test was adopted, and then the Anova Two-Way test was applied with Tamhane's Post Hoc and the effect size was also used for analysis of the comparisons. The results demonstrated significant responses and a large effect size when compared to technical and tactical-to- strength training (T = 1.2: large; p = 0.002); TTxM (TE = 1.3: large, p = 0.001) and the duration of the session / external load in the TxM training (TE = 1.7: large; p = 0.001); TTxM (TE = 2.0: large, p = 0.001), whereas the PSE of the session showed only a sigifcant difference TTxM (TE = 0.8: moderate; p = 0.001). The stimuli of specific training of court as technician and technician-tactician promoted greater internal load in the athletes than the strength training, mainly through the influence of the variable time of the session that reflected to external load.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of plyometric training (PT) on vertical jump in young basketball athletes. A total of 39 athletes were divided into two experimental groups (male - MEG and female - FEG) and two control groups (male - MCG and female - FCG). The My Jump app quantified jump height from flight time. Data analysis relied on repeated measures ANOVA, Cohen's effect size (ES) and magnitude-based inference, with a level of significance of p≤ 0.05. Results showed that the MEG and the MCG obtained significant improvements in the countermovement jump (CMJ) and in the squat jump (SJ). The FEG and the FCG presented significant differences in the SJ, with interaction effect; as for the CMJ, only the FEG showed improvements with interaction effect. Concerning ES, the MEG showed greater effects in the CMJ and in the SJ compared to the MCG; within the FEG, the ES was greater only for the CMJ in comparison with the FCG. Qualitative responses showed that PT is likely beneficial for the MEG, whereas for the FEG it is likely beneficial in the SJ, and very likely beneficial in the CMJ. It is concluded that PT brought about positive effects on the MEG and on the FEG, both in the CMJ and in the SJ. In the control groups, both obtained significant improvements in the SJ, but only the MCG showed an improvement in the CMJ. Furthermore, results were better in the MEG and in the FEG compared to the MGC and to the FCG. Thus, PT is suitable for vertical jump enhancement in young basketball athletes.


RESUMO Este estudo investigou o efeito do treinamento pliométrico (TP) no salto vertical em atletas jovens de basquete. Participaram 39 atletas, divididos em dois grupos experimentais (masculino - GEM e feminino - GEF) e dois grupos controle (masculino - GCM e feminino - GCF). O aplicativo My Jump quantificou a altura do salto a partir do tempo de voo. Para análise dos dados utilizou-se anova de medidas repetidas, tamanho de efeito de Cohen (TE) e a inferência baseada na magnitude, com nível de significância (p≤ 0,05). Os resultados indicam que o GEM e GCM apresentaram melhoras significativas no countermovement jump (CMJ) e squart jump (SJ). O GEF e GCF apresentaram diferenças significativas no SJ com efeito de interação, no CMJ apenas o GEF apresentou melhoras com efeito de interação. No TE, o GEM apresentou maiores efeitos no CMJ e SJ quando comparado ao GCM, no GEF, o TE foi maior somente no CMJ em relação ao GCF. As respostas qualitativas mostraram que o TP é provavelmente benéfico no GEM, já no GEF, mostrou que é provavelmente benéfico no SJ e muito provavelmente benéfico no CMJ. Conclui-se que o TP promoveu efeitos positivos no GEM e GEF, tanto no CMJ quanto no SJ. Nos grupos controles, ambos obtiveram melhorias significativas no SJ, porém no CMJ, somente o GCM apresentou aumento. Ademais, os resultados foram maiores no GEM e GEF em comparação com o GCM e GCF. Assim, o TP é indicado para potencializar o salto vertical em atletas jovens de basquete.

ABSTRACT The relative age effect (RAE) is a phenomenon that provides participation and performance advantages to athletes born in the first months of the year compared to other athletes within the same age category. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of relative age in the in the major leagues of Brazilian basketball: Liga de Desevolvimento do Basquete (LDB), Liga de Basquetebol Feminino (LBF) and the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) considering the geographic region, the final classification of the teams, and the career period. The sample consisted of 831 athletes from the main leagues of Brazilian basketball during the 2014-2015 season. Information for the survey was obtained from the Brazilian Basketball Confederation website (www.cbb.com.br) and the National Basketball League website (www.lnb.com.br). The RAE was found in the Southeast and South LDB teams and in the Southeast NBB teams, and was not related to the teams' final classification. In addition, the RAE was reversed in the career consolidation phases of NBB athletes. We conclude that the RAE is present in LDB and NBB basketball players. An inverse RAE is observed in athletes aged 25-34 years, and there is an absence of this phenomenon in athletes who are at the final phase of their career.


RESUMO O efeito da idade relativa (EIR) refere-se a um fenômeno que proporciona vantagens de participação e desempenho aos atletas nascidos nos primeiros meses do ano, em relação aos demais atletas dentro de uma mesma categoria etária. O objetivo do estudo foi investigar o efeito da idade relativa na Liga de Desenvolvimento do Basquete (LDB), Liga de Basquete Feminino (LBF) e Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), considerando a região geográfica, a classificação final das equipes e o período da carreira. A amostra foi constituída por 831 atletas das principais ligas do basquetebol brasileiro, temporada 2014-2015. As informações para a pesquisa foram obtidas através do site da Confederação Brasileira de Basketball (www.cbb.com.br) e do site da Liga Nacional de Basquete (www.lnb.com.br). O EIR foi encontrado nas equipes das regiões Sudeste e Sul da LDB, nas equipes do Sudeste do NBB e não apresentou relação com a classificação final das equipes. Além disso, o EIR mostrou-se invertido nas fases de consolidação da carreira nos atletas do NBB. Conclui-se que o EIR está presente nos basquetebolistas da LDB e NBB, sendo observado um EIR inverso nos atletas de 25 a 34 anos e ausência deste fenômeno naqueles que se encontram na fase final da carreira.

INTRODUCTION: Muscular strength is an essential capacity for soccer players; however, the profile of this capacity has not yet been clearly established in young players. OBJECTIVE: To compare muscular strength performance in the countermovement jump (CMJ) task and the presence of lower limb asymmetry among soccer athletes of the under 15 (U15), under 17 (U17) and under 20 (U20) categories, and between two teams of different competitive levels. METHODS: One hundred and fifty one young soccer players of three different categories (U15, U17 and U20) from two teams in the Brazilian first and second divisions performed six vertical jumps in a system of two force plates. Ground reaction force (GRF) was used to calculate jump height and to obtain the variables Peak force (FMAX), Impulse (I) and Peak power (PMAX) with regard to body mass and the respective asymmetry values. RESULTS: No differences were found in the performance and asymmetry variable between the categories (Jump height: p=0.23; FMAX: p=0.15; I: p=0.11; PMAX: p=0.32; FMAX asymmetry: p=0.21; I asymmetry: p=0.58; PMAX asymmetry: p=0.58). The first division club had higher muscle strength and asymmetry values than the second division club (Jump height: p<0.01; I: p<0.01; PMAX: p<0.01; FMAX asymmetry: p<0.01; I asymmetry: p<0.01; PMAX asymmetry: p<0.01), except for FMAX (p=0.63). No variable had an interaction effect (club x category). CONCLUSION: As categories progress, jump height, relative I, PMAX and FMAX values and their respective asymmetries are stable. The asymmetry and strength performance of the first division club were higher than that of the second division club, except for FMAX, indicating that the competitive level may influence strength performance and the development of asymmetry. INTRODUÇÃO: A força muscular é uma capacidade fundamental para futebolistas; entretanto, o perfil dessa capacidade ainda não está bem estabelecido em jogadores jovens. OBJETIVO: Comparar o desempenho de força muscular na tarefa de salto com contramovimento e a presença de assimetria entre membros inferiores entre atletas de futebol das categorias Sub 15, Sub 17 e Sub 20 e entre dois clubes de níveis competitivos diferentes. MÉTODOS: Cento e cinquenta e um jogadores de futebol jovens de dois clubes da primeira e segunda divisão e de três categorias diferentes (Sub 15, Sub 17 e Sub 20) realizaram seis saltos verticais em um sistema de duas plataformas de força. A partir da força de reação de solo, calculou-se a altura do salto e foram obtidas as variáveis Força máxima (FMÁX), Impulso (I) e Potência máxima (PMÁX) com relação à massa corporal e aos respectivos valores de assimetria. RESULTADOS: Nenhuma variável de desempenho e assimetria foi diferente entre as categorias (Altura do salto: p = 0,23; FMÁX: p = 0,15; I: p = 0,11; PMÁX: p = 0,32; Assimetria de FMÁX: p = 0,21; Assimetria de I: p = 0,58; Assimetria de PMÁX: p = 0,58). OBJETIVO: Comparar el desempeño de fuerza muscular en la tarea de salto con contramovimiento y la presencia de asimetría entre miembros inferiores de atletas de fútbol de las categorías Sub15, Sub17 y Sub20, y entre dos clubes de fútbol de diferente nivel competitivo. MÉTODO: 151 futbolistas de dos clubes de primera y segunda división y tres categorías diferentes (Sub15, Sub17 y Sub20) realizaron seis saltos verticales en un sistema de plataformas de fuerza. A partir de la fuerza de reacción de suelo, se calculó altura del salto y variables Fuerza máxima (FMÀX), Impulso (I) y Potencia máxima (PMÁX) relativas a la masa corporal y los respectivos valores de asimetría. RESULTADOS: Ninguna variable de rendimiento y asimetría fue diferente entre las categorías (Altura: p=0,23; FMÀX: p=0,15; I: p=0,11; PMÁX: p=0,32; FMÀX: p=0,21; Asimetría de I: p=0,58; Asimetría de PMÁX: p=0,58). Abstract The aims of the present study were to assess the reliability of long sprint cycling performance in a group of recreationally trained cyclists and to provide thresholds for changes in performance for this particular group of subjects in repeated measures designs through a scale of magnitudes. Repeatability of mean power output during a 1-min cycling time trial was assessed in a group of 15 recreationally trained cyclists (26 ± 5, years, 176 ± 5 cm, 78 ± 8 kg). They were tested on separate days, approximately one week apart. The test and retest values for the whole group of cyclists were 7.0 ± 0.5 W/kg and 6.9 ± 0.6 W/kg (systematic change and 90% confidence limits of -1.0% ± 1.1%). Our results indicated good test-retest reproducibility (typical error of 1.8%, 90% confidence limits of 1.4% to 2.6%; intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.96, confidence limits of 0.91 to 0.99), but suggested a reduction of mean power for the "slower" subjects on retest (-2.0%, 90% confidence limits of ±1.8%). If not monitored, this systematic decrease could interfere in results of studies utilizing groups with similar performance levels, particularly investigating strategies to improve performance in sprint cycling exercises around 1 min. The thresholds for moderate, large, very large and extremely large effects for mean power output on long sprint cycling performance are about 0.4%, 1.3%, 2.3%, 3.6%, and 5.8%, respectively.


Resumo Os objetivos do presente estudo foram avaliar a confiabilidade do desempenho de sprint longo no ciclismo em um grupo de ciclistas recreacionais e fornecer limiares para mudanças no desempenho para este grupo de sujeitos em delineamentos de medidas repetidas, através de uma escala de magnitudes. A reprodutibilidade da potência média durante um contrarrelógio de 1-min foi avaliada em um grupo de 15 ciclistas recreativamente treinados (26 ± 5 anos, 176 ± 5 cm, 78 ± 8 kg). Eles foram avaliados em dias separados, com aproximadamente uma semana de intervalo. Os valores de teste-reteste no contrarrelógio de 1-min para o grupo inteiro foram 7,0 ± 0,5 W/kg and 6,9 ± 0,6 W/kg (mudança sistemática e limite de confiança de 90% de -1,0% ± 1,2%). Nossos resultados indicam boa reprodutibilidade teste-reteste (erro típico de 1,8%, limite de confiança de 90% de 1,4% para 2,6%; coeficiente de correlação intraclasse de 0,96, limite de confiança de 90% de 0,91 para 0,99), mas sugeriu uma redução da média de potência para os sujeitos "mais lentos" no reteste (-2,0%, limite de confiança de 90% de ±1,8%). Se não monitorada, esta queda sistemática na potência pode interferir nos resultados de estudos utilizando grupos com níveis similares de desempenho, particularmente investigando estratégias para melhorar o desempenho em sprints com duração próxima a 1 min. Os limiares para efeitos moderado, grande, muito grande e extremamente grande para média da potência em sprint longo no ciclismo são aproximadamente 0,4%, 1,3%, 2,3%, 3,6% e 5,8%, respectivamente.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac vagal index (CVI) is supposedly higher in athletes and may differ between sports and/or between field positions. OBJECTIVE: To compare CVI: a) between elite football players vs. non-athletes and b) according to five football positions. METHOD: 242 football players of the first Brazilian/Angolan division were divided in five positions (N): goalkeepers (17), defenders (44), wingers (34), midfielders (87) and forwarders (60) and compared with 303 age-matched healthy non-athletes. CVI was estimated from a 4-second exercise test by quantifying the ratio of two cardiac cycle durations, before and at the end of a fast unloaded cycling exercise. RESULTS: Football players had resting and maximal heart rates of, respectively, 59 and 190 bpm and measured VO2max of 62.2 mL/(kg.min). Players and non-athletes showed similar CVI results (median-[P25-P75]) - 1.63-[1.46-1.84] vs 1.61-[1.41-1.81] (p = 0.22). Wingers tended to have a higher CVI (1.84-[1.60-1.99]), especially when compared to defenders (1.53-[1.41-1.72] (p = 0.01). There was a modest non-physiologically relevant association between VO2max and CVI (r = 0.15). CONCLUSIONS: Football players did not differ from non-athletes in CVI; however, among players, wingers were more often vagotonic, which may represent a hemodynamic advantage for match situations, where rapid heart rate transitions and faster oxygen delivery to muscles are required.


FUNDAMENTOS: O índice vagal cardíaco (IVC) é supostamente maior em atletas e pode diferir entre esportes e dentro do mesmo esporte. OBJETIVO: Comparar o IVC: a) entre futebolistas e não atletas e b) de acordo com cinco posições do futebol. MÉTODO: 242 jogadores da primeira divisão brasileira/angolana foram divididos em cinco posições (N): goleiros (17), zagueiros (44), laterais (34), meio-campistas (87) e atacantes (60) e comparados com 303 não-atletas saudáveis da mesma idade. IVC foi estimado a partir do teste de exercício de 4 segundos, quantificando a relação entre as durações de dois ciclos cardíacos - antes e ao final de uma pedalada rápida e sem carga RESULTADOS: As frequências cardíacas de repouso e máxima dos futebolistas foram, respectivamente, 59 e 190 bpm e o VO2max de 62,2 mL/(kg.min). Futebolistas e não-atletas mostraram resultados semelhantes de IVC (mediana- [P25-P75]) - 1,63- [1,46-1,84] vs 1,61- [1,41-1,81] (p = 0,22). Os laterais tenderam a ter maior IVC (1,84- [1,60-1,99]), especialmente quando comparados aos defensores (1,53- [1,41-1,72] (p = 0,01). Houve uma modesta associação fisiologicamente irrelevante entre VO2max e IVC (r = 0,15). CONCLUSÕES: jogadores da elite do futebol não diferem de não-atletas em IVC; entretanto, entre eles, os alas se mostraram mais frequentemente vagotônicos, o que pode representar uma vantagem hemodinâmica para situações de jogo, onde são necessárias transições rápidas da frequência cardíaca e um aporte mais rápido de oxigênio para os músculos ativos.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: dos factores importantes han sido descritos como contribuyentes en la aparición de fatiga durante el ejercicio físico: la disminución de las reservas de glucógeno muscular y la pérdida de agua con electrolitos a través del sudor, que favorecen la deshidratación. Debido a esto, la reposición de líquidos y electrolitos posterior al ejercicio físico se transforma en la prioridad para restablecer la homeostasis corporal alterada durante el ejercicio físico. Por su composición nutricional, la leche parece ser una buena alternativa natural como bebida rehidratante posterior al ejercicio físico. Objetivo: comparar la efectividad como bebida de rehidratación de la leche descremada chocolatada contra una bebida deportiva artificial en militares, a partir de la hipótesis de que la leche descremada chocolatada tiene iguales o mejores efectos sobre la hidratación post ejercicio, que una bebida deportiva artificial. Método: 30 militares (23,0 ± 3,2 años) se dividieron en 2 grupos: 1) rehidratación con bebida deportiva con 6 pòr ciento de carbohidratos y relación de Na/K 2:1 (grupo ISO). Rehidratación con leche descremada chocolatada (grupo LECHE). Se evaluó la retención de fluidos a través del peso corporal y la gravedad específica de la orina (GEO) antes y después del ejercicio físico y posterior a las 2 horas de rehidratación. Resultados: se encontraron diferencias significativas (p< 0,05) en la retención de fluidos en el grupo LECHE comparado con el grupo ISO. No hubo diferencias significativas entre la GEO de ambos grupos. Conclusión: Los resultados muestran que la rehidratación con leche descremada es más efectiva en la retención de fluidos y recuperación del peso previo al ejercicio que la bebida deportiva(AU)


ntroduction: Two important factors have been described as contributing to the onset of fatigue during physical exercise: Decreased muscle glycogen stores and the loss of water with electrolytes through sweating, favoring dehydration. Because of this, fluid and electrolyte replacement after physical exercise becomes the priority to restore altered body homeostasis during physical exercise. Due to its nutritional composition, milk appears to be a good natural alternative as a rehydration beverage after exercise. Objective: To compare the effectiveness chocolate skim milk as pots-exercise rehydration beverage with an artificial sports drink in the military, based on the hypothesis that chocolate skim milk has equal or better effects on post-exercise hydration than an artificial sports drink. Method: 30 soldiers (23.0 ± 3.2 years) were divided into 2 groups: 1) rehydration with sports drink with 6 percent carbohydrates and ratio of Na / K 2: 1 (ISO group). Rehydration with chocolate skim milk (LECHE group). Fluid retention was assessed through body weight and the specific gravity of urine (GEO) before and after physical exercise and after 2 hours of rehydration. Results: significant differences were found (p < 0.05) in fluid retention in the LECHE group compared to the ISO group. There were no significant differences between the GEO of both groups. Conclusion: The results show that rehydration with skim milk is more effective in fluid retention and weight recovery prior to exercise than sports drink(AU)

ABSTRACT

Anterior cruciate ligament tears are common and affect young individuals who participate in jumping and pivoting sports. After injury many individuals undergo ligament reconstruction (ACLR) but do not return to play, suffer recurrent injury and osteoarthritis. Outcome studies show that after ACLR, 81% of individuals return to sports, 65% return to their preinjury level and 55% return to competitive sports. Systematic reviews place the risk of ipsilateral retears at 5.8% and contralateral injuries at 11.8%, with recent reports of over 20% failure rate. Approximately 20% to 50% of patients will have evidence of OA within 10 to 20 yr. Factors important in reducing complications include timing of surgery, individualized return to play protocols, and prevention programs for injury. Further understanding of the factors that increase return to play percentages, reduce the risk of recurrent injury and improve long-term outcomes after ACL injury is needed to reduce the burden of these injuries on society.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The main objective of this study was to analyze the factors that preceded field goals made in the 2014 NBA finals considering the number of passes per offense, shooting conditions, and offense type variables. METHODS: We assessed field goals attempted by 27 professional players that participated in the 2014 NBA finals. Data were collected by three researchers through an adapted version of the Technical-Tactical Performance Evaluation Tool in Basketball to systematically analyze all five games of those finals. Descriptive analysis consisted in absolute and relative frequency and inferential statistics were applied through Chi-Square test, Cohen's D for effect size, and binary logistic regression test. Significance levels were set at 5% and all statistics were applied through SPSS 23.0. RESULTS: Shooting efficacy was not associated with the number of passes made per offense. Regression statistics showed that shooting efficacy was highly associated with shooting condition rather than the offense type performed. However, fast breaks seem to lead to better shooting conditions (passively guarded and wide open) when compared to set and regained offenses. CONCLUSION: Evidence pointed to the importance of shooting condition as a determining factor in increasing the probability of field goals made throughout the games analyzed.(AU)
