ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gestational age (GA)-related intelligence outcomes of children born very preterm improved over time. STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter cohort study recruited 4717 infants born at GA <31 weeks and admitted to neonatal intensive care units between 2001 and 2015 in Taiwan. Intelligence outcomes at age 5.5 years were classified by intelligent quotient (IQ) into no cognitive impairment (IQ > -1 SD), mild cognitive impairment (IQ = -1∼-2 SD), and moderate/severe cognitive impairment (IQ < -2 SD). Trends were assessed for neonatal morbidities, mortality, and intelligence outcomes by birth epoch (2001-2003, 2004-2006, 2007-2009, 2010-2012, 2013-2015) and GA (23-24, 25-26, 27-28, 29-30 weeks). RESULTS: Maternal education levels increased and rates of brain injury and mortality decreased over time. Among the 2606 children who received IQ tests, the rates of no, mild, and moderate/severe cognitive impairment were 54.5%, 30.5%, and 15.0%, respectively. There were significant trends in the increasing rates of no cognitive impairment and declining rates of mild and moderate/severe cognitive impairment in all GA groups across the 5 birth epochs. Relative to the occurrence in 2001-2003, the odds were significantly reduced for moderate/severe cognitive impairment from 2007-2009 (aOR 0.49, 95% CI 0.30-0.81) to 2013-2015 (0.35, 0.21-0.56) and for mild cognitive impairment from 2010-2012 (0.54, 0.36-0.79) to 2013-2015 (0.36, 0.24-0.53). CONCLUSIONS: For children born very preterm between 2001 and 2015 in Taiwan, the improvement of maternal education levels and improvements in neonatal brain injury and mortality were temporally associated with trends of decreasing intellectual impairment at school age across all GA groups.

ABSTRACT

Müller cells, the glial cells of the retina, provide metabolic support for photoreceptors and inner retinal neurons, and have been proposed as source of the significant lactate production of this tissue. To better understand the role of lactate in retinal metabolism, we expressed a lactate and a glucose nanosensor in organotypic mouse retinal explants cultured for 14 days, and used FRET imaging in acute vibratome sections of the explants to study metabolite flux in real time. Pharmacological manipulation with specific monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) inhibitors and immunohistochemistry revealed the functional expression of MCT1, MCT2 and MCT4 in Müller cells of retinal explants. The introduction of FRET nanosensors to measure key metabolites at the cellular level may contribute to a better understanding of heretofore poorly understood issues in retinal metabolism.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with behavioral problems in children with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia. METHODS: Random sampling is utilized to obtain a sample of 90 patients. The behavioral problems of the patients are detected by Achenbach Children's Behavior Scale. Parental emotional problems are investigated by the Self-Rating Depression Scale and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale. RESULTS: The results demonstrate that the detection rate of behavioral problems in children with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia is 53.3% (48/90). Among these behavioral problems, an abnormal rate is higher in the four dimensions: thinking, violation of discipline, social interaction, and aggression. The anxiety and depression scores of caregivers are statistically higher in the abnormal group than in the normal group. The results of the multivariate analysis show that the anxiety degree of the parents had a significant impact on the behavior of the children. CONCLUSIONS: Children with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia are facing the issues of high rates of behavioral problems. Parents of children with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia had higher levels of anxiety and depression than parents of normal children. The anxiety and depressive state of mind of parents or caregivers had a significant impact on the behavior of children with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary mucormycosis and aspergillosis with disseminated mucormycosis involving gastrointestinalin is a very rare but lethal infection leading to extreme mortality. Herein, we present a unique case of pulmonary coinfection with Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Aspergillus flavus, with disseminated mucormycosis involving the jejunum caused by C. bertholletiae in an acute B-lymphocytic leukemia (B-ALL) patient with familial diabetes. Early administration of active antifungal agents at optimal doses and complete resection of all infected tissues led to improved therapeutic outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Circulating miRNAs presenting in plasma in a stable manner have been demonstrated their potential role as a promising biomarkers in many human diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, melanoma and ovarian carcinoma. However, few circulating miRNAs could be used for breast ductal cancer diagnosis. Here, we identified miR-1273g-3p as a biomarker for detecting breast ductal cancer. We detected miR-1273g-3p levels in the plasma of 39 sporadic breast ductal cancer patients and 40 healthy donors by Stem-loop Quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results showed the plasma miR-1273g-3p level were significantly up-regulated in breast ductal cancer patients compared with healthy donors (p=0.0139). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve also revealed the significantly diagnostic ability of miR-1273g-3p in patients (p=0.0414). In addition, the plasma level of miR-1273g-3p was closely related to IIIB-IIIC TNM stage. We also confirmed the higher expression level of miR-1273g-3p in breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 (4.872±0.537) than normal breast cells (Hs 578Bst). Taken together, miR-1273g-3p could represent as a potential biomarker for early breast ductal cancer diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, we investigated the application of 13 short tandem repeat (STR) loci (D13S317, D7S820, TH01, D16S539, CSFIPO, VWA, D8S1179, TPOX, FGA, D3S1358, D21S11, D18S51 and D5S818) routinely used in forensic analysis, for delineating population relationships among seven human populations representing the two major geographic groups, namely the southern and northern Chinese. The resulting single topology revealed pronounced geographic and population partitioning, consistent with the differences in geographic location, languages and eating habits. These findings suggest that forensic STR loci might be particularly powerful tools in providing the necessary fine resolution for reconstructing recent human evolutionary history.
