ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The purpose of scientific production is to synthesize and capture research for eventual publication. In Peru, scientific production at the undergraduate level is relatively limited. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with scientific production conditions among dental students from the Peruvian capital. METHODS: This cross-sectional and analytical study evaluated 338 dental students from the Peruvian capital using a questionnaire composed of 15 questions on conditions for scientific production. Pearson's chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used for bivariate analysis. To evaluate the influential variables, the adjusted Poisson regression model with robust variance using the adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) was employed. The significance level was p < 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 17.8% of the students carried out research studies, while 1.5% published scientific articles. Conditions for scientific production were considered unfavorable in 28.4% of the cases, while 50.6% were classified as somewhat favorable and 21% as favorable. Students who dedicated < 2 h and ≥ 2 h per week to research were 3.04 and 3.84 times more likely to have favourable conditions for scientific production, respectively, compared to those who had no time for it (APR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.02-9.03 and APR = 3.84, 95% CI: 1.13-13.02; respectively). CONCLUSION: A minority of dental students reported favorable conditions for scientific production. On the other hand, students with more weekly time for research are more likely to have favourable conditions for scientific production compared to those with no time.

Students play a key role in university social responsibility (USR), as they are the protagonists of change and the fundamental axis in the teaching-learning process. This study aims to assess the factors associated with the perception of university social responsibility among dental students from two universities in the Peruvian capital. This analytical cross-sectional study assessed 754 students from two Peruvian universities between May and July 2023. The study utilized a validated 51-item questionnaire to assess sociodemographic factors and dental students' perception of USR. A Poisson regression model with robust variance and prevalence ratio (PR) was used to assess the influence of variables such as age, sex, marital status, type of university, academic year, and awareness of taking subjects related to USR. The significance was set at p < 0.05. The perception of USR was rated as poor, fair, and good by 16%, 67%, and 17% of the participants, respectively. According to the study, dental students from public universities were 68% more likely to perceive their USR education as poor than those from private universities (APR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.06-2.66), and those who were aware of taking MSR-related courses were 37% less likely to perceive their USR education as poor (APR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.40-0.98). Similarly, dental students attending public universities were 2.28 times more likely to perceive poor organizational management in USR compared to their counterparts at private universities (APR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.51-3.44). Additionally, students in their first and second academic years were 62% and 57% less likely to perceive poor organizational management in USR compared to those in their sixth year (APR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.19-0.79 and APR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.20-0.95; respectively). Furthermore, students from public universities were 2.31 times more likely to perceive social participation in USR poorly compared to their counterparts from private universities (APR = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.63-3.26). Lastly, it was observed that students from public universities were 2.51 times more likely to have a poor overall perception of USR compared to students from private universities (APR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.67-3.78). Acknowledging the diverse contexts and challenges inherent in public and private institutions, it can be concluded that more than half of the dental students had a fair perception of USR. Additionally, attending a public university was found to be a risk factor for having a poor perception of USR. However, taking a course related to USR and being in the early years of the program were identified as protective factors against a poor perception of organizational training and management in USR. It is recommended that students be involved in USR activities, including the Sustainable Development Goals, from the first years of their university education, especially in public universities.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between gender, sense of coherence (SOC), social support, perception of academic environment and mental health of dental students during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A longitudinal study involving 65 undergraduates enrolled from the first to sixth semesters in the bachelor dental course of Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil, was conducted. Baseline data (2018) included age, gender, SOC, social support, stress control and perception of education environment. Depression, anxiety and stress were assessed at baseline (response rate: 93%) and two-year follow-up (2020; response rate: 37%). Structural Equation Modelling was used to test the relationships between independent variables and depression, anxiety and stress during COVID-19 pandemic. Lower social support (ß = -0.15), lower stress control (ß = -0.20) and lower SOC (ß = -0.39) were directly linked to higher depression (ß = 0.22). Female gender (ß = 0.22), worse perception of educational environment (ß = -0.24) and lower SOC (ß = -0.57) directly predicted higher anxiety. Female gender (ß = 0.18), lower stress control (ß = -0.21), and lower SOC (ß = -0.46) directly predicted higher stress. The link between gender and both depression and stress, was mediated by stress control. Social support was indirectly linked to depression and stress via SOC. Perception of educational environment mediated the link between SOC and anxiety. Mental health of dental students during COVID-19 pandemic was influenced by demographic characteristics, perception of educational environment, social support and SOC through both direct and indirect pathways.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of gingival recessions in students of the faculty of odontology at Universidad de Los Andes and the factor associated with its presence. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a randomized stratified sampling was used to select the students. The sample included 311 undergraduate students evaluated between March and December 2022. The year spectrum was from 17 to 29 years old. Two calibrated examiners intra e interoperator completed a clinical evaluation with a periodontal probe, where the purpose was to diagnose gingival recessions and identify if there were any related factors such as smoking, braces, bruxism, marginal insertion frenulum, fine phenotype, and malposition. The total prevalence was described with each trust interval of 95%. The association between categorical variables was analyzed with the chi-square test, and the t-student test of the Mann-Whitney test analyzed the difference between continuous variables and recession prevalence. Results: 93,56% of the students presented at least one gingival recession. The highest prevalence related to teeth occurred in pieces 1.6, 3.4, 2.6, and 4.1, and the most severe were 3.3, 4.3, and 1.3. The most associated factor related to recessions was orthodontics, with a prevalence of 75,2%. Bruxism showed a positive association with the number of recessions, with a prevalence of 60,7%. Conclusions: Buccal gingival recessions were very prevalent in undergraduate students at the dental school of Universidad de los Andes during 2022, and they were strongly associated with the history of orthodontics.

Abstract Determine the terminal efficiency, lag and dropout in the cohorts of students who entered the dentistry career at the Faculty of Dentistry at University of Costa Rica in the lapse 2007 to 2014. Data from 736 files were collected. The variables considered were sex, admission age, nationality, marital status, children, admission note, domicile and high school. The data was collected from the Student Application System, the physical files, and the data base from the Supreme Court of Elections of Costa Rica. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate analysis were made, which were implemented from two logistic regression models. 98% of the students were Costa Rican, 68% women, 79% entered according to the admission note, 43% entered with an age of 18 years or less, 50% came from a public school, 77% resided in the Greater Metropolitan Area and 95% were single and remained without children. The average terminal efficiency was 6%; 46% of students have graduated with lag, 16% are still enrolled and 32% dropped out. Sex, age, admission note, and motherhood are sociodemographic variables that are associated with terminal efficiency and dropout. The average terminal efficiency in the cohorts from 2007 to 2014 in the courses at the Faculty of Dentistry University of Costa Rica was very low, almost half of the students graduated with lag and about a third dropped out the studies. The grade from the admission note seems to be a predictor of students'academic behavior, higher grade had more chances of graduating and less likely to dropout.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity in Chile despite government-sponsored measures and campaigns, along with others in the last 30 years, suggests additional reinforcement of these efforts at the primary care level. OBJECTIVES: To determine if lifestyles and modifiable health risk factors in first-year students from the University of Chile Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, potential future promoters of healthy lifestyles, show changes throughout their first academic year. METHODS: In a randomized stratified sample of 388 students according to sex and chosen career weight, height, waist circumference, waist circumference-weight ratio, food consumption, smoking prevalence and dependence, alcohol use, perceived stress level, and physical activity were measured at the first week, 3 and 6 months after their admission. The Cochrane test assessed dichotomic variables, and the Friedman test was used for nonparametric values. RESULTS: 253 students (186 women) completed the follow-up. A significant worsening of obesity (general and abdominal) and physical inactivity, persistent moderate and high-stress perception, and smoking prevalence were documented throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The progressive obesity and physical inactivity, high-stress perception, and persistent smoking prevalence in the first year of academic life suggest considering measures in the curricular academic structure that facilitate adjustments in the student's lifestyles. Future follow-up of this cohort, increasing participants, and assessing students' mental health are planned.

ABSTRACT: Education for dentists requires the integration of knowledge and skills. Traditionally, the dental curriculum is divided into a basic science cycle, a preclinical cycle and a clinical cycle. It has been reported that dental students have difficulty starting the clinical cycle, with high levels of anxiety and depression. The aim of this study is to gather information on the difficulties that dental students have in the transition from preclinical to clinical courses in order to identify improvements to facilitate it. Qualitative research, in which 4 focus groups were carried out with students between the third and sixth year of the dental school. The focus groups were audio recorded and a content analysis of their transcriptions was carried out using Atlas Ti software. After the content analysis of the transcripts of the focus groups, three thematic units were identified: characteristics of the program, challenges of clinical activity and coping mechanisms. The results of this research suggest that there are difficulties in the transition from preclinical to clinical courses, which are related to the characteristics of the program (highly demanding, with high time dedication and requiring organizational skills) and clinical activity (pressure to meet clinical requirements and the importance of developing non-technical skills). The students reported different coping mechanisms for these difficulties (psychological help, medication, reduction of academic load and paying for patients' treatments).

This study presents a quantitative analysis of data related to the dropout rates at the School of Dentistry at Federal University of South Mato Grosso (FAODO-UFMS) and graduates' professional activity, covering the period between its implementation in 1964 until the year 2015. The data obtained were associated with the existing admission system during the period. The graduates' adherence to the professional practice was investigated and the professional practice time of these graduates and of those ones from other Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the state of South Mato Grosso (MS). A significance level of 5% was adopted. The Unified Selection System (USS) has a strong correlation with Dental School dropout rates at UFMS. There was no statistical difference in the comparison between students who were admitted by nationwide competition (Vestibular), quotas, or through the use of vacant positions. The average time extent of Dentistry's practice has decreased in MS in recent decades, being statistically lower for the UFMS' graduates than for those ones from other HEI (p<0.001). Of the graduates from the years 1971 to 1990, the percentage of those who have been/are in practice for over 30 years reached 71.43%. The dropout rates at FAODO-UFMS increased with the use of USS as an admission system. Both USS and increase in vacancy at FAODO-UFMS did not show favorable results when related to adherence to the course. The average time of practice for Dentistry in MS has been decreasing, especially for those not graduated from FAODO-UFMS (AU).

The development of transversal competencies is a relevant aspect in the dental undergraduate curriculum. However, there is insufficient evidence about its implementation in national curriculums. The aim of this research was to know whether or not the courses are focused on transversal competencies in dental programs of Chilean universities. To accomplish this, a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. This research was based on the review of the curriculums published on the websites of each university that awarded undergraduate degrees in dentistry in 2020, and facilitated an open admission process. Of the 19 universities studied, all had courses associated with transversal competencies in their dental curriculum. These were distributed throughout the six years of the curriculum. Using the grouping of transversal competencies, as proposed by the Latin America Tuning Project, it was shown that courses related to cognitive learning processes were the most represented of the subjects, corresponding to 41 % of all courses studied. Those related to social values corresponded to 34 %; courses associated with informational technology and those within the international context represented 20 %; while the courses related to interpersonal skills only reached 5 %. Due to the fact that the courses related to interpersonal skills were scarce, it could be concluded that a large part of this learning is included in the hidden curriculum and is probably achieved via instructional modeling as part of the daily clinical practice. As a proposal for the future, this research suggests that we need to improve the training in transversal competencies for the dental graduates of Chilean universities.

The participation of undergraduate students as study subjects (SS) in research is considered a fundamental research activity of the educational experience provided by a university. Educators should promote learning by the scientific method through these activities under ethical standards for research with human beings. We designed a multidimensional questionnaire in English and Spanish to determine the perception of the educational benefits to, interest of and influence on university students with respect to participation as SS in research, and determine the content validity based on the judgement of experts. The items were designed based on previous theories and measurement scales, and on the opinion of experts. The Student Perceptions of the Educational Value of Research Participation Scale and the Coercion Assessment Scale were included in the new Participation of University Students as Study Subjects Index (USTUDI). The validity of the content was determined based on the judgement of experts who evaluated each item for relevance. The new instrument showed excellent content validity and is a multidimensional, single-application instrument designed to measure three psychological attributes of the participation of university students as SS in research, making it an instrument of high educational value. However, the results must be interpreted with caution, as tests need to be carried out to evaluate other psychometric characteristics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused several disruptions in medical education worldwide. Universities made curricular adjustments in order to adapt to this situation. Dentistry has been particularly affected by the lockdown measures resulting in the closure of dental clinics and the disruption of face to face personal training of students. The objective of this study was to describe the main curriculum adjustments made by the dental schools in Chile during 2020. A cross-sectional online survey was carried out which included representatives from all Dental Schools in Chilean Universities. The survey requested information related to local sanitary situations, accessibility to dental clinics, availability of treatments, teaching modality, support for mental well-being and future implications of dental education. Of 27 dental schools a total of 23 responses were received. It was found that 57 % of schools had limited access to dental clinics. All schools had implemented online modality to replace face-to-face theoretical training, 42 % were able to conduct clinical activities during 2020 and 82 % of clinical competency assessments were postponed. Due to the restrictive measures of the pandemic, the face-to-face classes, theoretical evaluations and some practical activities were performed online. Depending on the communal context, dental schools were able to execute practical activities. The academic curriculum in dental schools has been severely affected in different ways as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: to verify the knowledge of dental students from a Higher Education Institution of Paraíba about dental avulsion. Methods: a cross- -sectional study was carried out, in which 64 students answered a form with objective questions regarding sociodemographic data, course period, knowledge and conduct in cases of tooth avulsion. Descriptive analysis of absolute and relative frequency of data was performed (SPSS, v. 20.0). Results: most students received information about dental avulsion during the graduation classes (86%) and would indicate irrigation with saline solution followed by reimplantation when the trauma occurred less than one hour (64.1%) and more than one hour (43.8%). Endodontic treatment was indicated, regardless of the time the tooth was out of the dental socket, according 34.4% of the sample. Rigid retention was the most indicated for the reimplanted tooth (48.4%) and six months was the minimum radiographic follow-up time answered by most students (48.4%). Conclusions: although most students have received information about the topic, the knowledge was considered insufficient in relation to some aspects of the protocols recommended for emergency care for dental avulsion, with emphasis on behaviors related to dental reimplantation, indication of endodontic treatment, type of containment and follow-up.(AU)

H-A inicial= 20 (P) y 11(T); H-A final = 17 (R), 8 (A), 3 (P) y 3(T). Diferencias de medias contenidos disciplinares F-I= 5,61; interdisciplinaresF-I= 10,71 p= 0,000.
New conceptual models for health education emphasize content and context relevance for significant therapeutic interventions. Students should actively be involved in learning. One way to promote this are the active learning methodologies. Students educated by Reverse Classroom (RC) and Problem Based Learning (PBL) exhibit superior professional skills and effective learning. According to Honey-Alonso(H-A), there are four learning styles: Theorists (T) Pragmatists (P) Reflective (R) and Actives (A). The objective was to apply active methodologies in professionals, knowing their learning style, while they are students in a specialty program. The Periodontics program at the Dental School, Universidad de Chile, has a rehabilitation unit (RU). Between 2009 and 2019 the programme had 67 students, 31 agreed to participate signing the consent form. RC and PBL were applied in RU for the following contents: Caries Risk assessment, ferrule, muscle deprogramming, occlusal adjustment, teeth retention and implant site selection. First and last PBL presentations were compared categorizing disciplinary and interdisciplinary contents in contexts. At the same time, the HA questionnaire was applied to all participants. Collected data was analyzed in SPSS v.21 program. For the variables disciplinary, interdisciplinary contents, t test was applied with significance ≤ 0.05. The cohort n=31; 14 women (mean 30 years), 17 men (mean29 years). Basel HA = 20(P) and 11(T). Final H A = 8 (A), 3 (P),17 (R), 3(T). Median for disciplinary contents at basal was 8.1 and final was 13.71, p=0.00. Median for interdisciplinary contents at basal was 2.48 and at final was 13.19, p=0.00. Median differences for disciplinary contents final- basal = 5.63, for interdisciplinary contents final-basal= 10.71, p=0.00. All students engage actives methodologies, regardless of their learning style significantly increased more interdisciplinary contents in context for clinical decision making.
