RÉSUMÉ

Films of biodegradable blends of polycaprolactone (PCL) and Pluronics F68 and F127 were manufactured by an industrial thermo-mechanical process to be applied as potential delivery systems. The effects of Pluronics on the structure (mesophase organization), and thermal and mechanical properties of polycaprolactone were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and tensile mechanical tests. The addition of Pluronics affected the crystallization process by changing the relative amounts of crystalline, amorphous, and meso- (condis + plastic) phases. The melting transition and XRD profiles were deconvoluted to assess the individual contribution of the different crystal morphologies. Furthermore, it was found that the mechanical properties of the blends depended on the ratio and type of Pluronic. Thus, Pluronic F127 showed a larger mesophase content than its F68 counterpart with PCL and blends with enhanced ductility.

RÉSUMÉ

A new, rapid, selective and sensitive ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection coupled to electrospray ionization and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-ESI-Q-ToF-MS) strategy using automatic and simultaneous acquisition of exact mass at high and low collision energy, MS(E), has been developed to obtain polyphenolic profile of apples, apple pomace and apple juice from Asturian cider apples in a single run injection of 22 min. MS(E) spectral data acquisition overcomes chromatographic co-elution problems, performing simultaneous collection of precursor ions as well as other ions produced as a result of their fragmentation, which allows resolving complex spectra from mixtures of precursor ions in an unsupervised way and eases their interpretation. Using this technique, 52 phenolic compounds of five different classes were readily characterized in these apple extracts in both positive and negative ionization modes. The spectral data for phenolic compounds obtained using this acquisition mode are comparable to those obtained by conventional LC-MS/MS as exemplified in this work. Among the 52 phenolic compounds identified in this work, 2 dihydrochalcones and 3 flavonols have been tentatively identified for the first time in apple products. Moreover, 2 flavanols, 4 dihydrochalcones, 9 hydroxycinnamic acids and 4 flavonols had not been previously reported in apple by ToF analysis to our knowledge.

A case of perforated jejunal diverticulitis in a 87-year-old man is described and the literature is reviewed. Jejunal diverticulosis (JD) is estimated to occur in 0.02% to 1.3% of the adult population and is found most often in the elderly. The acute diverticulitis with perforation has been reported as high as 2.3% among patients with JD and is associated with high mortality. Clinical presentation mimic other more common acute intraperitoneal inflammatory conditions. Enteroclysis and abdominal CT are the most specific diagnostic tests. The common treatment is surgical resection of the involved segment. Laparoscopic resection and medical and medical/radiological approaches have also been proposed. Diagnostic and therapeutical aspects of this pathology are discussed.

RÉSUMÉ

Some second malignant neoplasms are increasingly being observed following NHL and a considerable amount of data has accumulated in the literature. The authors describe a case of 65-year old male who presented with submandibular adenopathy. Results of a biopsy of the mass surgically removed revealed low grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. During the staging workup, a meningioma and a renal cell adenocarcinoma (RCC) were unexpectedly discovered and successively resected. The patient is currently alive with no evidence of metastatic diseases 12 months after diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 10 months after meningioma resection and 8 months after RCC resection. The possibility of an underlying pathologic mechanism predisposing to multiple tumours should be considered. RCC and central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are among second malignancies with higher incidences in non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients whereas with specific regard to meningioma, one of the most common benign intracranial tumours that sometimes shows biological aggressiveness and malignancy, we have currently no data in the literature. Increased risks for several malignancies occur late in the NHL follow-up period and are largely confined to patients receiving either radiation therapy or chemotherapy. On the other hand, increased risks for renal cancer have also been reported at less than one year after diagnosis of NHL and are present in all treatment subgroups (radiation therapy, chemotherapy, other-no treatment). Increased risks for CNS malignant neoplasms have also been reported at less than one year. The authors review the pathogenic significance of this case report neoplasms association in the light of the various explicative hypothesis of this concurrence. Possible immune mechanisms associated with these neoplasm are particularly pointed up.

RÉSUMÉ

The Authors report a case of abdominal traumatism by gunshot wound, presenting with retroperitoneal hematoma and hematoma of the mesocolon, treated in emergency laparoscopy. After a literature review and their case report analysis, they confirm the importance of emergency laparoscopy in hemodynamically stable patients, as well as the diagnostic value of peritoneal lavage, positive for minimal and moderate hemoperitoneum. Laparoscopy allows, as the same time in most cases, the diagnosis and the management of the lesion, while surgery is reserved to the cases of severe hemoperitoneum and perforating injuries. The use of laparoscopy in abdominal blunt injuries, has reduced the number of unnecessary laparotomies with related higher incidence of morbidity. The Authors conclude confirming the importance of this technique for its diagnostic efficacy, lower costs, minimal traumatism, and good aesthetic results as observed in the case report for the modality of the injuries, the young age and the previous sternotomy of the patient.

RÉSUMÉ

Five helminth species were seen in the abomasa of 29 farmed fallow deer. Spiculopteragia asymmetrica was most common in both prevalence (96.6%) and abundance (166.2). Ostertagia drozdzi, Ostertagia arctica and Spiculopteragia quadrispiculata were also recovered with high prevalence (79.3-93.1%); Trichostrongylus axei was sporadic (3.4%). Yearlings had worm counts of 496-1480, adult males of 168-1720 and females of 18-2008. For nine of 13 deer, the faecal egg counts were negative and post-mortem examinations were positive, with 18-1140 worms per deer. The results are discussed in relation to helminth population, its epidemiological significance and management strategies.
