Dioctophyme renale is a parasite that attacks animals as well as humans and has the right kidney as a preferred target organ. This document reports the case of a clinical-chirurgical canine patient with a history of elimination of three D. renale samples through its urine and presence of parasites at its left kidney and abdominal cavity. Pre-cirurgical exams were performed at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Pelotas. Among these exams, abdominal ultrasonography identified the nematode's location and the Pulse-Doppler of the intrarenal vessels showed an increase in the resistive indices of the evaluated areas. An Exploratory Laparotomy was conducted with the patient who had 23 parasites removed from its abdominal cavity. The presence of D. renale causes severe lesions at kidneys and other organs of the abdominal cavity, for this reason early diagnosis and nematode´s removal are essential for the patient's recovery.(AU)

RÉSUMÉ

Gaucher's disease (GD) is caused by a ß-glucocerebrosidase deficiency, leading to the accumulation of glucocerebroside in the reticuloendothelial system. The prevalence of GD in Tabuleiro do Norte (TN) (1:4000) is the highest in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to present evidence of consanguinity and founder effect for the G377S mutation (c.1246G>A) among GD patients in TN based on enzyme, molecular and genealogical studies. Between March 2009 and December 2010, 131 subjects at risk for GD (GC in dried blood ≤2.19 nmol/h/ml) and 5 confirmed GD patients from the same community were submitted for molecular analysis to characterize the genetic profile of the population. Based on the enzymatic and molecular analysis, the subjects were classified into three categories: affected (n = 5), carrier (n = 20) and non-carrier (n = 111). All carriers were (G377S/wt). Affected subjects were homozygous (G377S/G377S). The identification of a single mutation in carriers and homozygotes from different generations, the history of the community and the genealogy study suggest that the high prevalence of GD in this population may be due to a combination of consanguinity and founder effect for the G377S mutation.

RÉSUMÉ

Chitosan-montmorillonite (KSF-CTS) beads were prepared by crosslinking with pentasodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). Montmorillonite (KSF-Na), CTS and KSF-CTS biocomposite were used to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. These materials were characterized before and after copper adsorption by XRD, FTIR and thermogravimetry (TG). The data indicated that the adsorption process proceeds kinetically according to a pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption processes were adjusted to the Langmuir model for KSF-Na and CTS and to the Temkin model for KSF-CTS. The maximum adsorption capacity followed the order CTS>KSF-CTS>KSF-Na. Percentages desorption of copper ions from the KSF-CTS composite after three desorption cycles were 86%, 85% and 84%, respectively, using EDTA as regeneration agents.

Ischemic events in dogs are uncommon; however, this may be under-reported. The myocardial infarction was created by left anterior descending coronary ligation in healthy mongrel dogs in clinical and laboratorial exams. These dogs were evaluated clinically, electrocardiography (ECG), through ambulatory electrocardiography (AE), echocardiography (ECO), creatine kinase enzyme (CK), creatine kinase MB fraction enzyme (CK-MB) and histopathologically. Even in these animals we observed the occurrence of arrhythmia after intramyocardial injection by AE. The animals exhibited left ventricular chamber enlargement and increase in myocardial performance index at ECO. In ECG, there were deviations in ST segment in the precordial leads V1 and V2. CK and CK-MB showed high increase, CK and CK-MB peaks occurred six and 12 hours after infarction, respectively. Histopathology of the infarction in the inferior wall of the left ventricle and replacement of muscle tissue by fibrous tissue were seen. Furthermore, intramyocardial injection that may be used for therapeutic purposes was evaluated by AE, which demonstrated no increase in the ventricular arrhythmias. Therefore, myocardial infarction in dogs can be detected with the tests available and intramyocardial injection can be used as a therapeutic way.

RÉSUMÉ

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the burden and quality of life (Qol) of primary caregivers of children/adolescents with meningomyelocele, taking into account the relationship to anxiety and depression symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional approach was taken to analyze the health-related Qol and burden using the Short Form-36 Survey (SF-36) and the caregiver burden scale (CBS), respectively. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were investigated using the Beck Inventories. The Heckman two-step method was used to deal with the selection bias problem. RESULTS: A total of 43 primary caregivers were enrolled in the study. Most of the caregivers were mothers with preliminary education, living in consensual union. Lower scores in general health and vitality were reported in the SF-36. The mean global CBS score was 2.2. Majority of the volunteers (55.8%) were considered non-depressive. There were both positive and negative correlations between the scores of both Beck Inventories and most dimensions of the CBS and SF-36. The Heckman method showed a higher burden among caregivers who had children with fecal incontinence, were living together with a partner, were unemployed and had lower income (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The primary caregivers of children and adolescents with myelomeningocele reported burden and a lower Qol. There were more anxiety and depression symptoms in subjects with higher burden and impaired Qol. Caregivers had a higher burden if they were living together with a partner, were unemployed, had low income and had care recipients with fecal incontinence.

As radiografias torácicas mostraram efusão pleural. O exame necroscópico confirmou a comunicação interatrial do tipo ostium secundum.

The pattern for ambulatory electrocardiography was evaluated in 25 healthy German Shepherd dogs. The influences of gender, age, and physical activity in HR maximum, mean, and minimum (HRmx, HRme, and HRmin, respectively) were studied. The physically active dogs (PA) showed lower HRme than sedentary animals (S) (P=0.03), whereas HRmx and HRmin were not altered (P=0.06 and P=0.65, respectively). The HRme was 80.89±13.85 for PA and 112.94±35.71 for S. No effect of gender and age on HR was observed. It is possible to state that the physical activity can modulate the sinus node of the dogs.

RÉSUMÉ

This work is devoted to study experimentally the performance of a theta pinch when the number of capacitors and turns of magnetic coil and the diameter of the glass tube are changed. To model the theta pinch a simple RLC circuit is used and the measurement of energy transmission from the bank of capacitors to the plasma is made using few experimental resources. In this work it was analyzed more than 2500 curves with a nonlinear procedure. Our results show that it is possible to design an optimized theta pinch making the appropriated choice of energetic parameters and therefore to reduce the stress of the system.

A Yorkshire Terrier bitch presented hematemesis, abdominal distention, poliuria, and polidipsia. After clinical examination, it was established a clinical suspect of nephropathy. The complementary exams showed normochromic and normocytic anemia and serum concentrations of ureia (306mg/dl) and creatinine (3.6mg/dl) above the references values. At two-dimensional ultrasound hipoechoic and anechoic cystic areas were observed, as well as hiperechogenic renal pattern and corticomedullary ratio loss. At necropsy, the medullary region presented many small cysts in a fibrous connective tissue. Cortical tubulointesticial lesion was responsible to the resulting renal failure. It was established a tubulointersticial nephritis diagnosis.

Major diastolics indexes, including the mitral propagation velocity (Vp), were evaluated in 36 healthy Boxer dogs, 18 males and 18 females, aging from 1.5 to 6-years-old. The aortic root and left atrium ratio, measured in B mode, was 1.17±0.11. The peaks of velocity of waves of the left atrium filling were: systolic 31.41±6.87cm/s, diastolic 73.85±17.04cm/s and atrial reversal 28.90±8.33cm/s. The ratios of the waves of initial ventricular filling were 1.58±0.19 to mitral valve and 1.62±0.29 to tricuspid valve. From the evaluated indexes, the Vp was only weakly correlated (r=0.39) with E and A waves of mitral valve and with D, showing itself, relativity, as an independence index. Regarding to the Vp, no significant differences were seen between the gender of the animals and among the observers. The Vp decreased as the age increased, showing mean values of 99.73±16.06cm/s

This case reports a mongrel dog referred to a veterinarian due to tiredness and syncope episodes. Atrial fibrillation and ventricular premature complex were observed during electrocardiographic exam. The anti-arrhythmic treatment was not effective and the dog died from syncope. At necropsy, a mass invading the internal area of the left atrium was evidenced in the base of the heart. The occurrence of chemodectoma was histologically exhibited. Infiltrations in the atrial myocardium caused alterations in the miocites and produced reentrant circuits and/or atrial depolarization ectopic points.

RÉSUMÉ

The influence of sedimentation rates on biogeochemistry of riparian forests was studied near ephemeral streams at Fort Benning, GA. Upper reaches of seven ephemeral streams had received varying rates of sedimentation stemming from erosion along unpaved roadways at the military installation. Two reference catchments were also included in the study. Decomposition of foliar litter, microbial C and N, N mineralization, and arthropod populations were compared within and among catchments. Rates of sedimentation over the past 25 yr ranged from 0 in references to 4.0 cm yr(-1). Decomposition rates declined exponentially with sedimentation rates as low as 0.20 to 0.32 cm yr(-1) and appeared to reach an equilibrium at a sedimentation rate of 0.5 cm yr(-1). Nitrogen mineralization and microbial C and N followed the same trend. Sedimentation had no discernible effect on arthropod populations. These data suggest that biogeochemical cycles may be altered by sedimentation rates that commonly occur in some floodplain forests.

RÉSUMÉ

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with an increased relative risk (RR) of 1% per micromol/L in total homocysteine concentration. In ESRD patients who undergo hemodialysis (HD), the antioxidant system is largely inadequate in correcting the imbalance between generation and scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). To clarify the role of several cellulosic (CMs) and noncellulosic of synthetic membranes (NCMs) upon hyperhomocysteinemia and the oxidative stress, we measured plasma (P) homocysteine (t-HCY), plasma lipid peroxidation (LPO), and erythrocyte (E) concentration of several antioxidant enzymes in 20 normal subjects, in 35 HD patients treated with CMs, and in 29 patients treated with NCMs. Before, during, and after the first session of the week (at times 0', 120', end, 30' after HD end), blood samples were drawn. Plasma (P) homocysteine (t-HCY), cysteine (CYS), malondialdehyde (MDA), erythrocyte (E)-glutathione (GSH), glucose-6-phosphodehydrogenase (G6PD), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and superoxide-dismutase (SOD) were determined. The dialytic procedure significantly decreased the three plasma parameters, but none normalized (as a mean). The E-enzymes scavenging ROS (lower than normal before session) increased throughout the session, but the normal range of activity was never reached. Different membranes have shown different effects. When these effects on P and E spaces were pooled, we were able to classify the membranes as follows. In a general sense, cellulosic membranes are less effective than synthetic membranes both on lipoperoxides (LPO) and antioxidant activity (AOA). Among synthetic membranes, PMMA is the best membrane both for plasma values and lesser enzymatic derangement during the session. A practical system for classifying the anti-atherosclerotic action and antioxidant activity of dialytic membranes is proposed.

RÉSUMÉ

In patients with chronic renal failure who undergo hemodialysis (HD), the antioxidant system is inadequate to correct the imbalance between the generation and scavenging of reactive oxygen species. To clarify the role of six different membranes on oxidative stress, the authors measured plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte (E) concentrations of several antioxidant enzymes in 30 HD patients: 20 on bicarbonate HD, 4 on paired filtration dialysis, 3 on acetate free biofiltration, and 3 on hemodiafiltration. Before, during, and after the first session of the week (at times 0, 30, 60, and 120 min, end, and 30 min after end of HD), several blood samples were drawn. Plasma (P) homocysteine (HCY), cysteine (CYS), malondialdehyde (MDA), E-glutathione (GSH), glucose-6-phosphodehydrogenase, glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GP), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined. All six membranes (Hemophan [HEMO]; cellulose diacetate [DIAC]; acrylonitrile-69 [AN69]; polymethylmethacrylate [PMMA]; cuprammonium rayon [CURAY]; polysulfone plus hemophan [PS + HEMO]) induced a significant decrease in plasma lipid peroxidation (p < 0.001) and an increase in E-GSH, GR, GR + flavinadenine dinucleotide, GP, and SOD (p < 0.001). Some membranes, however, showed some peculiar effects on reactive oxygen species: HEMO is better than DIAC, as far as P-MDA and P-HCY are concerned; PMMA induces higher changes in E-GR and P-CYS than does HEMO; and patients chronically using PMMA and PS + HEMO membranes show the lowest P-HCY levels both before and after dialytic sessions. Based on these changes, implications as to the effects on vascular disorders could be derived.

RÉSUMÉ

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein secreted by liver hepatocytes, and is also found on the surface of lymphocytes and as a membrane-associated protein expressed on rat liver macrophages and human monocytes. C-reactive protein levels increase in the sera of children infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, during the acute phase of Chagas' disease, but its role in the course of this infection is unknown. Experiments designed to detect the binding of CRP to circulating forms of T. cruzi failed to observe it because anti-human CRP antibodies bind to the parasite. The present work intended to further clarify this novel question related to the anti-CRP cross-reactivity with the parasite. Indirect immunofluorescence, immunoenzymatic, flow cytometry, and Western blot assays showed that three different polyclonal anti-human CRP antibody preparations bind to T. cruzi surface. This binding is dose-dependent, saturable, and is inhibited when anti-CRP antibodies from different species were allowed to compete, indicating the specificity of the reactivity. The antibodies recognized a protein band below 23 kDa in Western blot analysis of parasite extracts. The divalent cation chelators EDTA and EGTA impaired the antigen recognition by the antibodies. The binding to parasite surface was also observed with some available monoclonal antibodies raised against human CRP. A polyclonal anti-human CRP presented an inhibitory effect on invasion of heart muscle cells by T. cruzi. Our results indicate that a molecule antigenically related to CRP, a possible CRP-like molecule, is expressed on the surface of T. cruzi.

RÉSUMÉ

Chagas' disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The acute phase of T. cruzi infection, which can be conveniently studied in mouse models, is thought to be a determinant of survival and of the pathological features of the chronic phase. With regard to the occurrence of early death and parasitaemia levels C3H and C57/B16 mice are classically classified as 'susceptible' and 'resistant' to T. cruzi infection, respectively. Alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) is a physiological proteinase inhibitor found in tissues and in the plasma of mammals. Previous studies showed that A2M plasma levels increase in C3H mice acutely infected by T. cruzi but do not change in C57/B16 mice. This difference might involve two possible phenomena, concerning A2M synthesis and/or clearance by its receptor (A2M-R). In this study, we examined by flow cytometry the binding of A2M-trypsin conjugated with FITC to macrophages from normal and T. cruzi-infected C3H and C57/B16 mice. Our present results show for the first time that A2M-R is expressed more (by approximately 33%) in the surface of cells from normal C57/B16 as compared to C3H mice. We also show that A2M-R expression is up-regulated in both strains during acute T. cruzi infection, but at higher levels and earlier in C57/B16 mice. At the same time, peritoneal cells become activated as judged by: (1) increase of their size and granularity; (2) gradual increase of Fc gamma RII/III expression assayed by 2.4G2 binding; (3) down-modulation of F4/80 binding, a mAb that recognizes an antigen typically expressed in resident macrophages. Finally, our results indicate that as macrophages become activated in vivo a higher expression of A2M-R is observed.
