RÉSUMÉ

Control of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in drinking water could be achieved by removing its precursors as one practical way. Herein, superfine powdered activated carbons with a diameter of about 1 µm (SPACs) were successfully prepared by grinding powdered activated carbon (PAC, D50=24.3 µm) and applied to remove model NDMA precursors, i.e. ranitidine (RAN) and nizatidine (NIZ). Results from grain diameter experiments demonstrated that the absorption velocity increased dramatically with decreasing particle size, and the maximum increase in k2 was 26.8-folds for RAN and 33.4-folds for NIZ. Moreover, kinetic experiments explained that rapid absorption could be attributed to the acceleration of intraparticle diffusion due to the shortening of the diffusion path. Furthermore, performance comparison experiments suggested that the removal of RAN and NIZ (C0=0.5 mg/L) could reach 61.3% and 60%, respectively, within 5 min, when the dosage of SAPC-1.1 (D50=1.1 µm) was merely 5 mg/L, while PAC-24.3 could only eliminate 17.5% and 18.6%. The adsorption isotherm was well defined by Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption of RAN/NIZ was a monolayer coverage process. The adsorption of RAN or NIZ by SAPC-1.1 and PAC-24.3 was strongly pH dependent, and high adsorption capacity could be observed under the condition of pH > pka+1. The coexistence of humic acid (HA) had no significant effect on the adsorption performance because RAN/NIZ may be coupled with HA and removed simultaneously. The coexistence of anions had little effect on the adsorption also. This study is expected to provide an alternative strategy for drinking water safety triggered by NDMA.

RÉSUMÉ

The Chronic Care Model (CCM) is a framework that supports the proactive, planned, coordinated and patient-centered care of chronic diseases. The Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) scale is a valuable tool for evaluating patients' perspectives on chronic care delivery based on the CCM. Few studies have examined its application in China. This study assesses hypertension care in Chinese patients and explores how PACIC scores relate to patient compliance. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hangzhou, China, from June to August 2021, including 253 hypertensive patients from 5 county hospitals and 13 primary healthcare centers. The study used the PACIC scale to assess hypertension care delivery and the Compliance of Hypertensive Patients scale (CHPS) to measure patient compliance. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to explore the relationship between demographic characteristics and the total and domain scores of PACIC, as well as the association between CHPS and the domain scores of PACIC. The mean value of overall the PACIC score was 3.12 (out of 5). Problem solving/contextual domain had the highest average score for each item, while follow up/coordination domain had the lowest. Patient activation had negative effects on intention (ß = -.18, P < .05), attitude (ß = -.21, P < .05), responsibility (ß = -.17, P < .05), and the total score of CHPS (ß = -.24, P < .01). Delivery system design/decision support was negatively associated with lifestyle (ß = -.21, P < .05) and the total score of CHPS (ß = -.26, P < .01). Hypertensive patients perceived that they sometimes received hypertension care consistent with the CCM in Chinese primary healthcare settings. A higher level of PACIC score was beneficial for improving hypertensive patient compliance.

RÉSUMÉ

The mammalian epidermis is a structurally complex tissue that serves critical barrier functions, safeguarding the organism from the external milieu. The development of the epidermis is governed by sophisticated regulatory processes. However, the precise mechanism maintaining epidermal homeostasis remains incompletely elucidated. Recent studies have identified Paxbp1, an evolutionarily conserved protein, as being involved in the developmental regulation of various cells, tissues, and organs. Nonetheless, its role in skin development has not been explored. Here, we report that the targeted deletion of Paxbp1 in epidermal keratinocytes mediated by Keratin14-Cre leads to severe disruption in skin architecture. Mice deficient in Paxbp1 exhibited a substantially reduced epidermal thickness and pronounced separation at the dermo-epidermal junction upon birth. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that the absence of Paxbp1 hinders cellular proliferation, marked by a halt in cell cycle transition, suppressed gene expression of proliferation, and a compromised DNA replication pathway in basal keratinocytes, resulting in the thinning of the skin epidermis. Moreover, molecules and pathways associated with hemidesmosome assembly were impaired in Paxbp1-deficient keratinocytes, culminating in the detachment of the skin epidermal layer. Therefore, our study highlights an indispensable role of Paxbp1 in the maintenance of epidermal homeostasis.

RÉSUMÉ

OBJECTIVE: Infliximab is a first-line biologic agent for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), in which loss of response (LOR) remains a challenge in the treatment of patients with CD. The study aimed to explore the association between body composition parameters and LOR to infliximab in CD patients. METHODS: 118 patients with CD admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University and treated with infliximab from June 2015 to December 2021 were retrospectively enrolled. The body composition of patients was analyzed by computed tomography (CT). The primary outcome measure was the one-year LOR. Patients were divided into the Remission group and the LOR group to analyze the association between body composition parameters and the LOR to infliximab. RESULTS: The rate of sarcopenia in the LOR group was higher than in the Remission group (83.7% vs. 60.0%, P=0.008). Multivariate analysis showed that females had a lower risk of sarcopenia than males (OR=0.30, 95%CI 0.11-0.81, P =0.017); BMI was significantly associated with sarcopenia (OR=0.68, 95%CI 0.56-0.83, P <0.001); L1 CD and L2 CD had a lower risk of sarcopenia than L3 CD (OR=0.29, 95%CI 0.10-0.83, P =0.021; OR=0.25, 95%CI 0.07-0.87, P=0.028). CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenia was identified as a risk factor for developing LOR in infliximab-treated patients.

RÉSUMÉ

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.80 to 4.95 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1}, a measurement of Born cross sections for the e^{+}e^{-}→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0} and D^{+}D^{-} processes is presented with unprecedented precision. Many clear peaks in the line shape of e^{+}e^{-}→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0} and D^{+}D^{-} around the mass range of G(3900), ψ(4040), ψ(4160), Y(4260), and ψ(4415), etc., are foreseen. These results offer crucial experimental insights into the nature of hadron production in the open-charm region.

RÉSUMÉ

Aerobic composting has been used as a mainstream treatment technology for agricultural solid waste resourcing. In the present study, we investigated the effects and potential mechanisms of the addition of a microbial agent (LD) prepared by combining Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus paralicheniformis and Irpex lacteus in improving the efficiency of cattle manure composting. Our results showed that addition of 1.5 % LD significantly accelerated compost humification, i.e., the germination index and lignocellulose degradation rate of the final compost product reached values of 92.20 and 42.29 %, respectively. Metagenomic sequencing results showed that inoculation of cattle manure with LD increased the abundance of functional microorganisms. LD effectively promoted the production of humus precursors, which then underwent reactions through synergistic abiotic and biotic pathways to achieve compost humification. This research provides a theoretical basis for the study of microbial enhancement strategies and humus formation mechanisms in the composting of livestock manure.

RÉSUMÉ

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the periprostatic adipose tissue thickness (PPATT) is an independent prognostic factor for prostate cancer patients after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP). This retrospective cohort study included consecutive prostate cancer patients who underwent LRP treatment at Wuhan Union Hospital from June 2, 2016, to September 7, 2023. PPATT was defined as the thickness of periprostatic fat and was obtained by measuring the shortest vertical distance from the pubic symphysis to the prostate on the midsagittal T2-weighted MR images. Subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness (SATT) was obtained by measuring the shortest vertical distance from the pubic symphysis to the skin at the same slice with PPATT. The primary outcome of the study was biochemical recurrence (BCR), and the secondary outcome was overall survival (OS). Multivariable Cox regression analysis was used to identify independent prognostic factors for prostate cancer survival and prognosis. Based on the optimal cutoff value, 162 patients were divided into a low PPATT/SATT group (n = 82) and a high PPATT/SATT group (n = 80). During the entire follow-up period (median 23.5 months), 26 patients in the high PPATT/SATT group experienced BCR (32.5%), compared to 18 in the low PPATT/SATT group (22.0%). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis indicated that the interval to BCR was significantly shorter in the high PPATT/SATT group (P = 0.037). Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that an increase in the PPATT/SATT ratio was associated with BCR (hazard ratio: 1.90, 95% CI, 1.03-3.51; P = 0.040). The PPATT/SATT ratio is a significant independent risk factor for BCR after LRP for prostate cancer patients.

RÉSUMÉ

Cubic hollow-structured NiCo-LDH was synthesized using a solvothermal method. Subsequently, clay-like Ti3C2Tx MXenes were electrostatically self-assembled with NiCo layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH) to form composites featuring three-dimensional porous heterostructures. The composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Ti3C2Tx MXenes exhibit excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity, providing abundant binding sites for NiCo-LDH, thereby promoting an increase in ion diffusion channels. The formation of three-dimensional porous heterostructural composites enhances charge transport, significantly improving sensor sensitivity and response speed. Consequently, the sensor demonstrates excellent electrochemical detection capability for quercetin (Qu), with a detection range of 0.1-20 µM and a detection limit of 23 nM. Additionally, it has been applied to the detection of Qu in natural plants such as onion, golden cypress, and chrysanthemum. The recovery ranged from 97.6 to 102.28%.

RÉSUMÉ

Partial great toe transfer is widely used in finger reconstruction. Although satisfactory results have been reported at the recipient's hand, the donor foot still presents with many problems due to the large amount of tissues harvested. In this study, the Ilizarov technique was utilized to enlarge the great toe in order to minimize the amount of tissue sacrificed of the donor foot. In this retrospective study, 23 patients (30 toes) underwent transverse distraction of the great toe for finger reconstruction from September 2020 to December 2022. The width of the contralateral normal finger was set as the objective width gained of distraction. At the last follow-up, the changes of bone, toenail, plantar skin, vessel, and nerve of the great toe were measured, and postoperative complications were assessed. The time for active distraction was 46.1 ± 8.3 days, with a widening rate of 0.41 ± 0.08 mm/day. Counting in the time for latency and consolidation, the time of treatment with external fixation was 84 ± 11.9 days. At the last follow-up, the average width of the distal phalanx of the great toe increased from 13.1 to 28.1 mm (p < 0.001). The width of the toenail increased from 15.8 to 30.3 mm (p < 0.001), and the width of the plantar pulp increased from 25.6 to 38.8 mm (p < 0.001). Computed tomography angiography (CTA) and Doppler ultrasound confirmed that the digital arteries and nerves of the great toe were intact after distraction surgery. Two patients needed revision surgery due to complications of pin loosening or premature consolidation. With the help of the Ilizarov technique, the great toe is effectively enlarged after transverse distraction. Multiple tissues of the great toe, including bone, nail, and plantar skin, are regenerated, and more tissues were preserved after toe-to-hand transfer. To the best of our knowledge, this is a novel method to enlarge the donor site for finger reconstruction.

RÉSUMÉ

Objectives: This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the effects of neuromuscular training (NMT) on dynamic balance in healthy athletes through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Methods: Searches on six databases for randomized controlled trials examining the impact of NMT on athletes' balance ability. The search period extended from the inception of the database to March 16, 2024, languages are limited to Chinese and English. Review Manager 5.1 was used for literature quality assessment and data analysis. Stata 15.0 software was used for assessing publication bias, employing the clipping method, and conducting sensitivity analysis. The Grading of recommendations assessment development and evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Effect size (ES) was used to evaluate the impact effect of the results. Results: (1) Meta-analysis: A total of 7 papers met the inclusion criteria, and the meta-analysis indicated that NMT had a positive impact on the dynamic balance ability of the right (SMD = 0.74) and left (SMD = 0.70) lower limb of athletes, and a statistically significant difference was observed (p < 0.01). Subgroup analysis revealed that NMT did not have a positive effect (p > 0.05) on the right anterior (SMD = 0.35); However, it had a positive effect (p < 0.05) on the right posteromedial (SMD = 1.22), right posterolateral (SMD = 0.82), right composite score (SMD = 0.79), left anterior (SMD = 0.38), left posteromedial (SMD = 1.19), left posterolateral (SMD = 0.57) and left composite score (SMD = 0.86). (2) Reporting bias: Funnel plot indicated evidence of publication bias, but there was no significant asymmetry in the funnel plot after trimming and filling. The results were not reversed, indicating the robustness of the combined results. (3) Sensitivity analysis: The results of the sensitivity analysis suggest that the data in this meta-analysis are relatively stable and credible. (4) Grading the evidence: Based on GRADE scale the certainty of evidence from the included studies was determined to be moderate. Conclusion: Neuromuscular training can enhance the dynamic balance ability of athletes on both the left and right sides. Therefore, neuromuscular training is an effective method for enhancing the unilateral dynamic balance ability of athletes.

RÉSUMÉ

Itaconate is an immunoregulatory metabolite produced by the mitochondrial enzyme immune-responsive gene 1 (IRG1) in inflammatory macrophages. We recently identified an important mechanism by which itaconate is released from inflammatory macrophages. However, it remains unknown whether extracellular itaconate is taken up by non-myeloid cells to exert immunoregulatory functions. Here, we used a custom-designed CRISPR screen to identify the dicarboxylate transporter solute carrier family 13 member 3 (SLC13A3) as an itaconate importer and to characterize the role of SLC13A3 in itaconate-improved hepatic antibacterial innate immunity. Functionally, liver-specific deletion of Slc13a3 impairs hepatic antibacterial innate immunity in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, itaconate uptake via SLC13A3 induces transcription factor EB (TFEB)-dependent lysosomal biogenesis and subsequently improves antibacterial innate immunity in mouse hepatocytes. These findings identify SLC13A3 as a key itaconate importer in mouse hepatocytes and will aid in the development of potent itaconate-based antibacterial therapeutics.

RÉSUMÉ

Background: Although the thymus undergoes degeneration with the advancement of age, recent studies have continuously revealed that the thymus possesses the potential for regeneration and may reverse this aging trend. Furthermore, an increasing number of studies indicate an association between thymus function and immunotherapy. Considering that lung cancer patients typically undergo chest computed tomography (CT) scans during treatment, this provides convenient conditions for us to observe thymic remodeling through imaging data. Therefore, exploring the changes in the thymus on CT images is of great significance for understanding its relationship with the efficacy of immunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. This study investigated the CT imaging characteristics of thymic density changes in patients with advanced NSCLC after immunotherapy. The primary objective was to determine whether changes in thymic density are predictors of response to immunotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Methods: A total of 412 patients with advanced NSCLC who underwent immunotherapy were included. Thymic density measurements were taken initially and after immunotherapy, with the annualized change calculated. Comprehensive analysis, including disease progression, survival, and subgroup assessments, was conducted. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS), and the secondary outcomes were progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR). Results: The annual change in density of the thymic region ranged from -108 to 108 HU after the initiation of ICIs. Patients were categorized into "loss" or "non-loss" groups (210 vs. 202) based on thymic density changes. Analysis of short-term progression of solid tumors revealed no statistically significant differences in ORR (P=0.55) and DCR (P=0.67) between the two groups. Throughout the entire follow-up period, 41 patients (19.5%) in the "loss" group and 64 patients (31.7%) in the "non-loss" group died. Thymic density reduction was not associated with PFS (P=0.08), but it was positively associated with increased OS (P=0.003). The results were consistent across subgroups. Conclusions: Thymic density changes were observed in nearly all NSCLC patients undergoing immunotherapy, with decreased density associated with longer OS. These findings suggest a potential association between thymic density changes and immune efficacy in NSCLC immunotherapy.

RÉSUMÉ

Background: LIN9, a gene associated with various cancers, is considered a tumor suppressor. However, the role of LIN9 in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to assess the role of LIN9 in the occurrence and prognosis of LUAD. Methods: Using three-tier HTSeq count RNA sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas, we assessed LIN9 expression for the LUAD dataset using the DESeq2 R package and RT-qPCR experiments. Biological functions were assessed using gene set enrichment analysis (clusterProfiler and GOplot). The expression of LIN9 and the infiltration of immune cells were assessed by Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis. We conducted correlation study using clinical characteristics and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The predictive value of LIN9 was determined using univariate and multivariate Cox regression as well as Kaplan-Meier analysis. Additionally, functional studies were conducted to validate its role in the progression of LUAD. Results: Expression of LIN9 was significantly elevated in LUAD, primarily influencing cell cycle, division, and signaling pathways. High LIN9 expression correlated positively with the infiltration of Th2 cells and inversely with that of plasmacytoid dendritic cells. Furthermore, LIN9 was associated with older age and advanced clinical stages, posing risks to overall, progression-free, and disease-specific survival. LIN9 served as a good diagnostic marker, particularly in females, patients aged over 65, and those with clinical N1-3 and M1 stages. Elevated LIN9 expression enhanced proliferation, migration, and invasion of LUAD cells. Conclusion: High LIN9 expression potentially contributes to LUAD occurrence through cell cycle regulation and chromosomal modification. It promotes the malignant characteristics of LUAD cells and holds prognostic value for affected patients.

RÉSUMÉ

Although the theoretical electrocatalytic activity of rhenium (Re) for the hydrogen evolution reaction is comparable to that of platinum, the experimental performance of reported rhenium-based electrocatalysts remains unsatisfactory. Herein, we report a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst composed of rhenium and cobalt (Co) nanoalloy embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon film (Re3Co2@NCF). The Re3Co2@NCF electrocatalyst exhibited remarkable hydrogen evolution performance, with an overpotential as low as 30 ± 3 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, the Re3Co2@NCF demonstrated exceptional stability over several days at a current density of 150 mA cm-2. Theoretical calculations revealed that alloying cobalt with rhenium altered the electronic structure of the metals, causing partial oxidation of the superficial metal atoms. This modification provided a balance for various intermediates' adsorption and desorption, thereby boosting the intrinsic activity of rhenium for hydrogen evolution reaction. This work improves the electrocatalytic performance of rhenium to its theoretical activity, suggesting a promising future for rhenium-based electrocatalysts.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Although the outcomes of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) have improved, patient survival remains lower than in patients with chronic liver disease. We investigated whether the poor outcomes of LDLT for PALF persisted in the contemporary transplant era. METHODS: We analyzed 193 patients who underwent LDLT between December 2000 and December 2020. The outcomes of patients managed in 2000-2010 (era 1) and 2011-2020 (era 2) were compared. RESULTS: The median age at the time of LDLT was 1.2 years both eras. An unknown etiology was the major cause in both groups. Patients in era 1 were more likely to have surgical complications, including hepatic artery and biliary complications (p = 0.001 and p = 0.013, respectively). The era had no impact on the infection rate after LDLT (cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and sepsis). The mortality rates of patients and grafts in era one were significantly higher (p = 0.03 and p = 0.047, respectively). The 1- and 5-year survival rates were 76.4% and 70.9%, respectively, in era 1, while they were 88.3% and 81.9% in era 2 (p = 0.042). Rejection was the most common cause of graft loss in both groups. In the multivariate analysis, sepsis during the 30 days after LDLT was independently associated with graft loss (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The survival of patients with PALF has improved in the contemporary transplant era. The early detection and proper management of rejection in patients, while being cautious of sepsis, should be recommended to improve outcomes further.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects 350 million people worldwide. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective, yet research on cognitive assessments post-treatment is lacking. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the effectiveness of cognitive assessment tools post-ECT to optimize MDD treatment. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, this review was pre-registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023470318). Searches were conducted across nine databases up to November 12, 2023. Quality assessment for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies was performed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, JBI critical appraisal tools, and the Jadad scale. Meta-analyses for short-term and long-term cognitive function involved 24 and 18 tools, respectively. FINDINGS: Thirty studies (20 RCTs and 10 quasi-experimental) involving 2462 MDD patients were evaluated. Results indicated no significant differences in overall short-term and long-term cognitive functions post-ECT. Short-term analysis showed impairments in memory, learning, and verbal abilities but improvements in attention and processing speed. Long-term analysis revealed enhancements in memory, learning, verbal, and visuospatial abilities compared to baseline. Based on GRADE classification, we recommend 11 tools for assessing acute cognitive function and 10 tools for chronic cognitive impairment. These tools demonstrated high reliability and validity, supporting their clinical use. INTERPRETATION: These findings provide critical evidence for future ECT clinical guidelines in managing MDD. The recommended tools can aid clinicians in adjusting ECT regimens, identifying early cognitive changes, and improving therapeutic outcomes in MDD treatment.

RÉSUMÉ

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer treatments often have negative effects on fertility, which pose challenges among patients who want to be parents in the future. This study aimed to examine the efficacy of oocyte cryopreservation, embryo cryopreservation, and ovarian tissue cryopreservation in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: This retrospective review evaluated 42 patients with breast cancer who underwent fertility preservation at our center from January 2012 to December 2022. This review encompassed the demographic characteristics of the patients, cancer stages, treatment details, and types of fertility preservation procedures and their outcomes. RESULTS: The average age at disease diagnosis was 33.4 years. Approximately 90.4% of patients presented with early-stage cancer (≤2). Of 42 patients, 26 underwent oocyte cryopreservation; 17, embryo cryopreservation; and 2, ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Further, three patients received mixed treatment. The overall live birth rate was 63.2%. There are more live births in embryo cryopreservation group. The successful pregnancy group was significantly younger and had a remarkably higher quantity of preserved oocytes/embryos than the nonsuccessful pregnancy group. The oocyte and embryo utilization rates in cryopreservation were 7.69% and 52.94%, respectively. These findings underscored the importance of prompt, informed discussions about fertility preservation options. CONCLUSION: Fertility preservation in patients with breast cancer have promising reproductive outcomes, with embryo cryopreservation being particularly effective. Prompt counseling and individualized fertility preservation strategies are important for improving the likelihood of posttreatment pregnancy. Nevertheless, future research on the long-term psychological and emotional effects of different fertility preservation methods must be performed.
